INTRODUCTORY STUDIES
This unit was designed to introduce us to the basic concepts and priniples of Graphic Design & Idea Generation. We were encouraged in our first lecture to focus on the concept being our designs & explore visual messages. The syllabus was outlined for us, which gave us a clear understanding of the requirements to pass this unit. These helped me through my journey as I often looked back at them when analysing my work and made changes accordingly.
We were also given aims which I also looked at often to give me a better understanding of what was expected in our body of work. By giving us three small projects, we are expected to think quickly and work efficiently. To do this, I must try and work at a quick pace & focus on what is required for each project. This idea was encouraged as it’s what it will be like in the working industry. It encourages us to go with our ‘gut’ and trust our own 5 opinions.
1 MY JOURNEY HOME MAPPING PROJECT
6
For this project we were required to visually represent our journey from college to home or visa versa. We had to consider the things we wouldn’t usually notice & the things that may make our journey personal. Experimentation with different mediums was encouraged, such as collage or photography. We were encouraged to consider adopting a method to document our journey which would allow us to develop our project further. As I started to begin
the project, I initially started to think about frequencies & the simple shape and direction my journey to uni consists of. I decided to look at some designers for inspiration.
7
RESEARCH
initial ideas
8
As I started this project, I began brainstorming ideas and thinking about my journey and if there are any specific things on my journey that make it unique. We then pitched these ideas to the class.
9
RESEARCH
documenting route
10
To get some initial ideas for my project, I decided to document my journey back from uni. Comparing to other peoples journeys to uni, I noticed there far more distinctive features, such as the velodrome and woodland area. I wanted to try and include these in my project as I felt as these were more unique than most walks it would make my project more interesting. I started to think more about magnifying different features on my route,
like festival maps; over the top and colourful. Although I think this idea would work well, I wanted to also continue with my original idea of frequencies. More development and sketchbook work is needed for both ideas in order to know which to progress with, and after the pin up critique in front of the class I got some good ideas to start developing my thoughts and ideas.
11
DEVELOPMENT map presentation
After my documenting my shoot through photography I began to think about how I would show the key features on my journey e.g. the Velodrome. I started to think about the sounds I hear on my journey
12
and how I could document these in a clear and visually pleasing way, so I looked at key codes and symbols, and if I could somehow use these to make my journey more interesting.
Comparing both above sketches, I felt that the sketch on the right worked better as I could make it more of a personal map, including any random thoughts or sounds on my journey.
13
DEVELOPMENT colour phycology
To add more depth to my project, I wanted to think about my use of colours and how they would have a strong effect, so I looked into colour phycology and what mood different colours give off.
14
15
DEVELOPMENT
experiments with typography
16
To create the busy tone to my map I decided to experiment with typography as I felt this was an interesting way of documenting the features/ sounds I see/hear on my journey. I then began to look at different fonts and think about what would be the most effective font to use. After looking at the fonts to ther right, I chose NovitoNova as I thought it was a more friendly font which would work well with my map. The only downfall in this choice is that there is no lowercase option. Although this will limit my map I feel it is still a much stronger designed font which will work well with my map.

17
DEVELOPMENT
experiments with fonts
I firstly experimented with Helvetica. I liked the different weights of fonts and thought this made some information more important/highlighted, but I think for this map I needed a softer font.
18
I think NovitoNova works much better for my project, as it’s more playful; something that I want to come across in my map. The different weights of letters also allows me to highlight different information.
19
DEVELOPMENT design process
Once I was happy with my choice of font I continued on designing my map on illustrator, looking at my sketches and copying the information onto illustrator and trying to place the text in ‘grouped’ areas
20
which I think works well and gives a busy effect. I looked briefly at concrete poetry too which has helped me organise my text in a order which makes the map a higher standard.
To add some colour into my map, I started to sketch out some ideas that I could put into illustrator. I tried to to use bright and positive colours which fits in with the style of my map.

FINAL OUTCOME reflection
24
For the first project of this unit I was pleased with my development and research. I tried to focus a lot on my sketches and idea generation, which I feel is shown in this book. This helped me specify the idea I wanted to continue on, and realise with the time frame the frequency idea wasn’t possible. In my critique for this project I received some negative and positive feedback. One of the negatives being the text is from right to left, when in England we usually read right to left. This made it slightly confusing where to beginning of the map started. Although I understood this critisim, I chose to leave it like this as this was how I drew my map from the beginning and how it is
geographically. I chose to print A1, which I feel made the map more successful as you could read the small text easily and made it feel more childlike and like an exploration. If I had more time, I would’ve liked to spend more time on my illustrations & possibly add more in. This would’ve made it even more playful & fun. Overall, I am happy with the outcome of this project. I like how it links with concrete poetry & has some humour included. I definitely think printing this A1 was the best way to present this map.

2 LIFE AND DEATH PROJECT
26
For this project we were asked to create two images which would appear on the two rear panels of a lorry’s door. The image on the left representing life, and the right death. The objective is to visualise a clear and meaningful graphic statement about life and death. To do this, I want to try & think about one image and there being a journey from life to death possibly. For the final piece, we have to use Illustrator. As my last project was all done on
Illustrator, I want to try & use other mediums, as I want to try and show as many different skills as I can throughout this unit.
27
RESEARCH
initial ideas
28
To start this project I began to brainstorm different ideas I would like to go down. I began to think about what mediums I could use to create my design. I thought collage could be quite a fun and interesting way to create my project as I could have it as one base image with slight changes on each side of the door representing life and death. I also thought about making it childish and related to children to make it quite sinister and make you think about
the message more. Similar to my first idea that I didn’t follow on the first project, I thought about possibly making a strong contrast between both sides, as if one represents heaven and hell. If i had them as well as the same base image it would create more fluidity and the journey from left to right would progessively become death.
29
RESEARCH
shocking advertisements
After gathering some ideas I decided to look at some shocking advertisements in the style I may want to go into & which could inspire me. I like these for their simplistic qualities but effect messages.
30
31
RESEARCH
think about perspective
32
We then had a lecture with Amanda looking at different ways of showing our work. She introduced us to perspective in advertising, and I felt for this project it was necessary and was a key tool to make our work
look more professional & give it more depth. It made me more confident in my decision to use potentially use photography as a tool in this project.
33
RESEARCH
think about perspective I then continued my research into using perspective in my project and started to think about using one base image and showing the difference between life and death as a journey or movement.
34
35
DEVELOPMENT
the design of dissent
36
I decided to then do more research into photography and looked at the design of dissent which showed a series of strong messages shown through photography in advertising.
These images made me think more about not using text and only an image to show my desired effect, which fits well with the theme as you wouldn’t want to distract drivers from the road reading the advert.
37
DEVELOPMENT symbolic - hands
I then started to think of powerful symbols and I thought of hands, and how in politics a handshake and a pose is key to show power. I then started brainstorming into how I could photograph hands relating
38
to cars. I liked the imagery of hands holding a car or the driver, and having the power to destroy a life/ the car. I want to try and experiment with these ideas and possibly photoshop hands with cars.
39
DEVELOPMENT sketches of ideas
40
After a lot of idea generation and brainstorming, I came up with the concept of using as a slogan, ‘The Power is in Your Hands’. I liked this idea thinking about power and especially linking to driving it is such a key factor. I looked at the previous page a collage of hands by Alexey Brodovitch for a Bazaar cover. I liked the placement of his cover and it made me realise that simplistically you can share a strong message realy effectively. I want to try and play around with toy cars and holding them in different ways. On the left (life) side considering holding the car carefully and delicately, and the right (death) holding it as if it’s about to fall. In my tutorial Gabbi suggested I ex-
periment with different objects that represent cars such as tin cans etc. I really liked this concept, but under the time frame I wasn’t sure I would be able to do this. For my shoot I bought two toy cars. I decided to smash one up, to give the effect of ‘death’. I chose to buy two cars that are really similar, as I thought it would make my message stronger, as if the same thing can happen to both cars. For this to be successful, I have to photograph this well & light it correctly to have the desired effect.
41
2.2
DEVELOPMENT shoot
42
After the shoot I picked these two images and started to edit them slightly on photoshop. I was happy with these two images as I felt compositionally they would work well together.
2.2
I think they both show the ‘power of hands’ and have a slight religious sense to them, as if there is a higher power controlling our fate. I am also considering using a small amount of text to add to the imagery.
43
FINAL OUTCOME reflection
44
For this project we were asked to create one/two images that represent both life and death which would go on the back of a lorry. I chose to use photography as my medium, which I think worked quite well and effectively. I was pleased with my edits and moulding the two photos together successfully. In my pin up critique my feedback was quite positive, but I was advised to take the text off as it wasn’t necessary. I agree that the image worked well on its own, but I feel the
slogan ‘the power is in your hands’ was key in my development so I wanted to keep it on my final outcome. I added a grainy effect onto my photos which I think made it more rustic and dramatic, which fits well with my theme. I was also happy with the composition of this shoot as I think it guides around the template well. If I had more time I would’ve liked to possibly make a series of these images, and experiment with other objects.
THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS
THINK BEFORE YOU OVERTAKE
45
3 THROUGH THE LETTERBOX
46
This project is our longest in the unit, which encouraged us to think more about our research & to explore more into our chosen theme/ article. We were given three articles, where we chose one & summarised it. We have to create something that’ll fit ‘through the letterbox’ measuring 250mm x 50mm. We must accomodate an address, stamp & postal mark. The beauty of this project is that we have more time to develop our
projects & use more skills. I want to focus on getting more research into this project as I feel in the last two projects I haven’t done as much as I have hoped.
47
RESEARCH
initial ideas
To start off this project I broke down each of the articles we were given and started to highlight the main points. I found this a helpful exercise as it made me realise the key information in the articles, which
48
made me focus more on important information & start to write up notes on parts of the article I’m interested in. I felt most passionate about this first article, which allows me to look into capitalism and fracking.
49
RESEARCH
other articles
I did this for all three articles, and found all interesting. I liked the imagery of the RIPA article, looking into the ‘big brother’ ideas & linking these with George Orwell, one of my favourite authors.
50
I was also interested in this article about inequality, and in my tutorial we brainstormed some interesting ideas linking with banks and debts. Although I like these two, I chose to go with Article one, Fracking.
51
RESEARCH
naomi klein - no logo
52
To start off my research I thought it would be good to buy this book by Naomi Klein, a social activist who had a big influene on the fight against fracking in my article. I found this book really interesting & an interesting view on big brands. Most of the book was about the power big brands such as Nike, and how they use third world countries to produce their products. Although this book wasn’t directly linked to Fracking or the area of Capitalism
I’m interested in, I felt that it gave me an inside & wider knowledge into the lies told by big brands and how the public never know the inside information. It made me think from a different perspective with this project, looking at how bigger and more powerful people/companies often lie to the public or spin the truth to get what they want.
53
RESEARCH
capitalism
54
I then did some of my own research into Capitalism so I had a clearer idea of what route to go down. I started focusing on profit & how capitalism aims to help the rich people & ignores many world issues.
55
RESEARCH
shock in advertising
56
After doing some research into capitalism & reading ‘No Logo’ I started to think more about politics & decided to look at a book Kirsten had reccomended; shock in advertising. Straight away this style of design
interested me as I felt I could use photography to share a message in a simplistic way with minimal text. I feel that photographs have a much stronger effect emotionally than just using text.
57
DEVELOPMENT target audience
58
After doing quite a lot of research I decided to strip back my ideas and think about my target audience, to try and get more clarity and idea generation for my actual design/final piece. I started to think about what message I wanted to share & how I wanted to show it. I did some more research by looking at ‘Change by Design’ which states the importance of a human centered approach. I wanted to try and focus on making an emotinal connection with my audience, as I think it will make my work far more effective. I didn’t want to focus on an age group as I didn’t think it would have strong enough emotive qualities/ links. I decided to think about family
relations & how family are the people you care about the most, and if they were in harm or danger you’d want to do something about it. I then began to brainstorm and think about aiming my project at parents, and try and photograph children relating to fracking. This also links well with the theme I want to go down, looking at shock in advertising. To progress this, I want to do some research into child photographers in uncomfortable situations.
59
DEVELOPMENT sally mann
60
As soon as I had my ideas to photograph children/child related items Sally Mann came straight to mind. I like her style of photography & how in many of her images she photographs children as if it’s so-
cially acceptable. Her images have strong emotive qualities, and make the audience feel slightly uncomfortable, something that I want to also succeed in my work.
61
DEVELOPMENT
target audience - parents
62
I then had a pin up critique with Gabbi and Phil, where I pitched my ideas to them & discussed improvements. I found this critique really helpful as they made me think about not giving too much away to the audience, so maybe photographing objects related to children & not actually children, so the audience has to think about my work and figure it out. I like the idea of setting a scene, such as a bath filled with dirty water with childs toys in it. This
sort of scene would make the audience think more about the meaning behind my photographs. I think to progress my project even further I need to focus mainly on fracking and not just on capitalism, as I think it’ll be better to specify and not try and cover such a large topic. I’m planning on doing some more research on fracking, so I’ll have a better understanding on what to photograph.
63
DEVELOPMENT
more needed research
64
65
DEVELOPMENT
shoot ideas & execution
After doing some more research into Fracking, I decided to do a photoshoot based on the effects of Fracking, with my target audience being parents/family. Here I sketched some of my intial ideas for
66
my shoot, which I was pleased with. I wanted to shoot in the studio, to keep them as a clear series & make them feel quite clinical, as if they’re being tested like animals for cosmetics.
I then looked at how I would like to present these photographs for my final piece. In a critique with amanda we looked at kids packaging/ games & thought about possibly turning them into a kids game which
would make parents look at them more. I really liked this idea but felt with the time scale it was unachievable. I decided to create a series of images, A5 postcard style to be posted through the letterbox.
67
DEVELOPMENT shoot one
For my first shoot I set up the studio with two lights, to have a strong clear set up. I filled up the bottle with dirty water and aimed to photograph it whilst ‘shook’ up, to create movement. I had to consider
68
shadows when photographing this I wanted it to be a clean and clear clinical themed shoot.
69
DEVELOPMENT shoot development
70
After the shoot, I took the images onto photoshop. I needed to do this as I felt the images were too dark for the clinical theme I wanted. I was pleased with this shoot as I felt that the meaning was clear, and after showing a few friends they seemed to get the message straight away. If I was to redo this shoot I would like to possibly take some close ups
of the bottle and try different angles. I also would’ve liked to potentially play about with food colouring, which would’ve had a similar effect. However, I am still pleased with this shoot and think that it definitely could be used as a final image. With text put on the image, I think it could work well and effectively.
71
DEVELOPMENT shoot two
72
For the next shoot, I bought some babies clothes and planned on making a washing line of clothes with the idea of ‘oil spills’. I dipped the clothes into PVA paint & black acrylic paint to create the effect of
oil spills. I chose to shoot this in the studio as I wanted to stick to the clinical idea. Because of the size of the studio, I may have to photoshop the background slightly.
73
DEVELOPMENT shoot development
74
75
DEVELOPMENT shoot development
I chose this image for my final image, as I liked the composition of it & the angle, where all the clothes can be viewed. I also like the ‘gory’ feel to it, as it is quite dark & uncomfortable to view.
76
Here is the photoshopped version, where my edit is clear. I decided to keep the left side of the image in shot (of the studio) as it give more depth to the image so it’s not as flat.
77
FINAL OUTCOME development
“Don’t worry, we have clinically tested that fracking will bring no harm to your families health”.
DO YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU ARE TOLD OR WHAT YOU SEE? DON’T LET IT GET TO THIS STAGE www.frackingawareness.co.uk
78
After finishing the edit on photoshop, I put the image onto inDesign & put some text on top of the photo. I feel this straight away adds more sophistication to my final piece, and makes it a far more successful advertisement. I chose to add a quote, as if from a testing company, telling a lie to the audience. I then below chose to add a strong question, to make the audience think more about the meaning. I think by adding text it made it a
powerful advertisement, linking back to the Naomi Klein article I was looking at, and the Shocking in Advertisement book. Although I like the message in this, I still want to experiment more with the font and layout, and consider the back of the postcard. I am considering putting the question with the website link on the back of the postcard, with just the quote on the front to make the audience think more & question the quote.

FINAL OUTCOME reflection
For my final outcome, I decided to use both the bottle & washing line images, putting them onto a postcard. I thought carefully about the colour scheme, eye-dropping the colours from the photos for the text. I chose against creating the teddy/ smoke shoot as I ran out of time & didn’t think it would be strong enough to use for my final outcome. I am pleased with both photoshoots I did. Orginally I was only going to use the washing line shot, but felt having a variety would work well,
as a collection. If I had more time I would’ve liked to do another shoot, to make it more of a series. I think my strongest part of this project was my research & development as I took time to look at different books/articles which led me to think about my target audience, which ultimately was key to my project development and final outcome. I am pleased with this project & feel out of all three projects this was my strongest where I have also devel85 oped in my own design skills.
EXHIBITION
disobedient objects
Before the London trip, I had already been to the disobedient objects exhibition. I found this a really useful exhibition to go to as for a lot of my projects I looked at politics & some of the protesting work and art/
86
design inspired me. I liked the collage style, something I didn’t have a chance to go into but definitely something I want to experiment with on my next unit.

Method:
Soft cover:
1. Check Paper Grain. 2. Trim paper so that the spine edge is perfectly straight/flat. 3. Add at least two extra leaves of paper to each side of book block. 4. Place into ‘binding press’, spine down. 5. Glue from both directions 6. Leave glue to dry whilst in press 7. Remove from press, discard extra pages and cut into notches for thread. 8. Apply thread in loops down spine.
1. Glue a paper strip against spine. 2. Tip in end papers 3. Leave under weight with 5mm of spine protruding. Hard case: 1. Glue Mull against spine, slightly wider than spine width. 2. Apply 2nd piece of mull 3. Glue a paper strip against the spine the exact same width as spine 4. Tip in end papers 5. Leave under weight with 5mm protruding. 89
LIBRARY RESOURCES articles online
This year one of the most helpful tools we have been shown was to use the AUB library search online. It allows you to search key words & look at Ebooks, Articles, Magazines etc which give you different views
90
on artists and art movements. I used this to search Naomi Klein’s work, and found a really interesting article on a view on her book. For future units, this will be one of the key tools I use.
91
LECTURE NOTES
92
To start the term, every tuesday we had a lecture with Kirsten, covering a range of topics such as Visual Culture, Advertisment & Photo Journalism etc. I found these lectures really helpful & have extended my knowledge of Graphic Design & other aspects linked. I also was shown and suggested different books that have helped throughout my project.
93
LECTURE NOTES
94
Alongside Kirsten’s lectures, we also had some seminars with Amanda. These were really helpful in relating to our current projects as we were made to think about different perspectives when it comes to design, and think about different ways to make our work unique & stand out.
95
LECTURE NOTES
96
We also were asked to show a wow factor in one of Kirsten’s lectures. I showed a clip from the documentary film Samsara, which was a 2 minute clip of 21 deaf women doing a perfectly in sync dance. I found this a really fun day/exercise to show peoples styles and what they are ‘wow’ed by. I found all of these lectures really helpful, both in my current designs & helping my overall design knowledge.
97
TECH DEM SESSIONS
I found the tech sessions with Eden probably the most helpful part of the course so far. Although I have already used photoshop/indesign etc I felt it made me learn more shortcuts & learn more tools/skills I
98
had forgotten. We were set tasks each week, and I have attached a few examples of my work. Above are the examples we were asked to recreate, and to the left are my recreations.

99
TECH DEM SESSIONS

For this task, we had to create a shadow on Illustrator. I experimented with different styles and angles, and out of all the tasks found this the most tricky. However by the end I was satisfied with my outcome.

We were asked to design our own business cards. I chose to make it quite simplistic, with one of my favourite quotes as well to make it personal and different. I would have them double sided but
102
repeated in reverse colours on each side. I would consider changing it slightly & having more key information on the back, but for a first copy I was happy with the colour palette & typography.
