FOUNDATION WELCOME LETTER
A momentous year. An inspiring future. Dear friends, This was truly a momentous year for the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. The Our New Era campaign successfully raised more than $42 million for our Redevelopment and Expansion Project, taking us over 70 percent of the way towards our goal.

President, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation
Thanks to our donors, leaders and visionaries, we’ve come a long way towards ensuring superior health care for future generations in Burlington and the surrounding region. Following the completion of Phase 1 of the Redevelopment project in late 2014, we celebrated the official groundbreaking for Phase 2 on March 30, 2015. We were honoured to have many dignitaries on hand to break ground for our seven-storey stateof-the-art patient care tower. These milestones were reached because of the vision and generosity of community leaders who stepped forward to help us
realize our dream. In September, Michael Lee-Chin and family generously donated $10 million, the largest contribution to our campaign and the single largest donation in Burlington’s history. In addition, the Lee-Chin family led a donor matching campaign and inspired $2 million in gifts from the community, and an additional $1 million from Mr. Lee-Chin and family. We’ve also had a lot of fun while doing good things. At events such as our Crystal Ball, Beauty and the Bistro, and the Amazing Bed Race, and many other events, the community came together to create great memories and show their commitment to our campaign’s success. With the continued backing of our supporters like you, we will make this vision a reality. We are looking forward to another inspiring year!

HOSPITAL WELCOME LETTER
Celebrating Our Commitment to Enhancing the Patient Experience Reflecting on the past year, we are struck by the fact that Joseph Brant Hospital’s C.A.R.E. commitment – Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence – comes through in everything we do.
Eric Vandewall President and CEO
Don F. Dalicandro Chair, Board of Governors
Our commitment is aligned with the principles and vision of Ontario’s Excellent Care for All Act (ECFAA). It particularly comes through in the past year’s achievements in the areas of partnerships, patient experience and redevelopment. Our partnerships take many different forms, but they are all created with one goal in mind – providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place. Providing the right care drives our pledge to provide the best patient experience. We are proud of the partnerships we created this year and the changes we made to enhance your patient experience. Our changes have made a positive impact on many different clinical areas – including women’s health, seniors care, mental health and more – proving that we take our

responsibility of serving the health care needs of our community seriously. One of our most significant milestones came in March 2015, when we officially broke ground on our new seven-storey patient tower. This marks a significant step forward in our commitment of rebuilding to serve our community better. A hospital designed for today’s health care needs – it’s what Burlington desperately needs and deserves, and we are thrilled that the work is well underway. We recognize that more work remains and over the past year, our Strategic Plan, Compassionate Care, Exemplary Services, Every Time, has provided a roadmap, and will continue to guide our way into the future. With a clear focus on our five strategic directions: Quality and Safety, Exceptional Customer Service, Innovation, Inspired People and Teamwork, and Leading Performance, we are working every day to ensure that our patients can count on excellent health care in their community, now and always.

INSPIRED LEADERSHIP
Making Our New Era a Reality Michael Lee-Chin and Family Generously Donate $10 million Thanks to entrepreneur, business leader and Burlington resident Michael Lee-Chin, Joseph Brant Hospital’s Our New Era Campaign reached great heights in 2014. Mr. LeeChin and his family stepped forward with a leadership gift of $10 million. The donation is the largest single donation in Burlington’s history and the driving force behind our new, state-of-the-art, seven-storey patient tower. Mr. Lee-Chin’s leadership spurred additional gifts, by establishing a Community Matching Challenge, committing to matching $1 million in community fundraising. The people of Burlington and the surrounding area rose to the occasion, and together, with more than 80 donations, we achieved our goal to raise $2 million from September to December 2014, achieving the match and bringing the Lee-Chin family gift to $11 million. On the reason for his family’s most recent donation, Mr. Lee-Chin said, “There is no greater investment than in our health and the health of our community. We are embarking on a new era of health care in Burlington and I’m proud and honoured to be a part of it.” 6
Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation
Mr. Lee-Chin also recognizes the importance of having a community member step forward as the lead donor for the $60 million fundraising campaign in support of the new Hospital. In a recent article in the Globe and Mail he said “I was approached by the Joseph Brant Foundation – they needed a lead donor to spur, to inspire the community, to rally around the cause. I made the commitment because the community needs a better hospital. We live in this community; someone has to take the lead. If no one takes the lead… nothing gets done.”
An Inspiring Launch to Phase 2 Mr. Lee-Chin helped launch Phase 2 of the building project by sharing his inspiring commitment with community members, staff, leaders, and dignitaries who had gathered to mark the official groundbreaking for our seven-storey state-of-the-art patient care tower. He told the distinguished
audience that inspired leadership can “turn a plausible impossibility into a convincing possibility.” His wise words captured precisely what our campaign has been doing. Mr. Lee-Chin emphasized the importance of having a dream and surrounding yourself with the right people, while “doing good and having fun,” which is one of the Lee-Chin family’s guiding lights Brenda Hunter, chair of the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation Board, expressed the organization’s appreciation. “We are so grateful to Michael Lee-Chin and his family for their incredible generosity and for supporting our vision of a new era of health care in Burlington. This gift is a true testament to the family’s philanthropic spirit and their commitment to ensuring our community has access to exceptional care, in a state-of-the-art facility.” The Lee-Chin Family’s leadership and generosity will benefit many future generations of community members receiving treatment in our modern patient tower.

INVESTING IN COMMUNITY
Brittany and Nigel Morgan
Morgan Investments Group Offers Generous Gift THE GENEROSITY OF DONORS OFTEN SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT THE STRONG FABRIC OF A COMMUNITY. AND WITH DONORS LIKE NIGEL AND BRITTANY MORGAN AND THE MORGAN INVESTMENTS GROUP WHO MADE A $500,000 GIFT TO THE OUR NEW ERA CAMPAIGN, THE BURLINGTON COMMUNITY IS IN GREAT SHAPE.
Nigel believes strongly in the power of our community, and as a local business owner, he saw the Our New Era campaign as a way to give back. “Burlington is where home is, and it was a great opportunity to contribute to this great community,” he explained. Nigel’s involvement with our hospital community stemmed from a relationship with his neighbour, Dr. Keith Greenway, one of our Hospital’s resident physicians. Nigel was able to tour the hospital with Dr. Paul Faulkner, who gave an overview of the big changes that were coming. “We were impressed with all the changes that were happening,” Nigel says. “Right from the patient care through to the hospital administration, everything that hospital was doing was modern and forward-looking. We decided it was something we wanted to be involved with.”

Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation
Patient-Centred Outpatient Care in a State-of-the-Art Health Care Facility The new Joseph Brant Hospital will be a hub for patient-centered services in a state-of-the-art health care facility. The new Ambulatory Care Centre will include a range of clinics and partnerships with community organizations, allowing for increased management of chronic disease through specialized outpatient care, while minimizing the need for Emergency visits or Hospital admissions. The Centre will be a senior-friendly environment, reflecting the demographic trends in Burlington. It will also house Nina’s Place – a specialized clinic for private and dignified care of sexual or domestic abuse victims.
A FAMILY GIFT
The Maternal and Child Unit (MACU) For a mother and her newborn, the first moments after birth are crucial. That’s why ensuring a high quality Maternal and Child Unit (MACU) is a priority in the Joseph Brant Hospital redevelopment project.
Linda Dunbar, Jacqueline and Leon Desrochers, Dan Desrochers
A Commitment Spanning Generations A COMMITMENT TO HELPING OTHERS CAN UNITE A FAMILY. IN THE CASE OF THE DESROCHERS AND DUNBAR FAMILIES, IT EVEN SPANS GENERATIONS.
“As a Member of the Campaign Cabinet, I was able to talk to people, hear their strong commitment, along with their concerns, and I knew we had a unique opportunity to make a difference,” Dan Desrochers explained. In 2014, three generations of the family came together to provide a generous $250,000 gift towards our new Maternal and Child Unit. Dan brought together his father Leon Desrochers, sister Linda Dunbar and niece Michelle Dunbar to donate. “We live in an amazing city in an amazing country,” explained Dan Desrochers. “Our hospital must serve our future needs.”
Currently, the MACU is co-located with the special care nursery. However, after the redevelopment is complete, both programs will move into newly designed spaces in close proximity, mirroring best practices. The MACU, home to 12 post-partum and 6 pediatric beds, will be built to meet the particular needs of new mothers and their newborns. It will feature mostly private rooms, and all rooms will be fully accessible. In its new location, the MACU will also be located closely to outpatient clinics that expecting and new mothers require – including the gestational diabetes and breast feeding clinics. Joseph Brant understands the needs of new mothers and their newborns, and we’re translating our knowledge into an entirely new and improved space to ensure the best possible beginning of life for every baby born in our Hospital.

RBC FOUNDATION GIFT
RBC Foundation Gift to Improve Kids Mental Health THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF THE RBC FOUNDATION AND THEIR GIFT OF $550,000, JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL WILL BE ABLE TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY MENTAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY.
The RBC Foundation gift will support two key initiatives: The RBC Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program, and a new Psychiatric Emergency Services unit. Currently, Joseph Brant Hospital’s multidisciplinary mental health program is offered one day per week, but the RBC gift will fund a two-year pilot program to expand the service to five days a week. The expanded service through the RBC Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program, we will significantly reduce wait times and allow more children to get the support they need closer to home. In addition, the hospital will create a Psychiatric Emergency Services unit within the new Emergency Department, providing patients and their families with a safe, calm, secure and dignified space in which to receive care. 12
Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation
“ RBC’s gift will allow us to expand our capacity by 75 percent, which will go a long way to reducing wait times and mental health emergency admissions.” – Dr. Alan Brown, Chief of Psychiatry, Joseph Brant Hospital
Reducing Wait Times Dr. Alan Brown, Chief of Psychiatry emphasizes the positive impact of the RBC gift. “This funding will make a tremendous impact on children, youth and families in our community,” he said. “Over the past year, we have witnessed a significant increase in demand for child and adolescent mental health services. RBC’s gift will allow us to expand our capacity by 75%, which will go a long way to reducing wait times and mental health emergency admissions.” In announcing the gift, RBC Regional President Francine Dyksterhus said, “Through the RBC Believe in Kids Pledge, we are committed to improving the well-being of kids and youth by supporting initiatives that build capacity to address children’s mental health.”
EXPANDING THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM
With a generous donation from the RBC Foundation, The Joseph Brant Hospital is expanding our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program (CAP).

(Front row) Dr. Alan Brown (Chief of Psychiatry, Joseph Brant Hospital), Anissa Hilborn (President, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation), Brenda Hunter (Chair, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation Board of Directors), Francine Dyskterhuis (Regional President, Southwestern Ontario), Allison Merrow (Vice President and Branch Manager, RBC Dominion Securities)
“ We are committed to improving the well-being of kids and youth by supporting initiatives that build capacity to address children’s mental health.”
Joseph Brant Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program currently provides services to more than 1,000 youth under the age of 18 in the Burlington and Waterdown communities. This outpatient program provides mental health care services for children and adolescents with a variety of behavioral, mood, anxiety, substance abuse, psychosis and developmental disorders. The prevalence of mental illness among Canadian youth is estimated to be between 15 and 20 percent, and recent projections suggest it will increase by 50 percent by 2020. “In the Emergency Department I see many children who would greatly benefit from the CAP program. By referring patients to CAP, I can get them out of the Emergency Department, away from a hospital stay, and into a caring, specialized environment. CAP is a vital service for our community and our hospital.” Dr. Paul Faulkner, MD, Interim Chief of Staff and Chief of Emergency Medicine

STUDENTS LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Burlington’s Fern Hill School
Young People Helping Future Generations
THE JOSEPH BRANT COMMUNITY IS FILLED WITH INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE AND INCREDIBLE SUPPORT FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND ALL AGES AND ALEXANDRA TODD, A GRADE 8 STUDENT AT BURLINGTON’S FERN HILL SCHOOL IS A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE.
Every year, the students and staff at Fern Hill raise money for charity, and the grade 8 students conduct a special project on community service. For her project, Alexandra proposed taking the charitable efforts of her class a step further, and focusing on a local community cause that would directly help her friends, classmates, their families and neighbours. She proposed that the school’s charitable efforts be directed to the Our New Era campaign. Alexandra’s proposal gained so much momentum that the school swung its entire fundraising program towards Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, initiating a five-year goal to raise $100,000. 14
Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation
In October 2014, Fern Hill’s annual “fundraising week” was geared exclusively towards Joseph Brant. The enthusiasm among teachers and students was contagious. The teachers wore hospital scrubs (donated by JBH) in their classrooms, and students held fundraising activities such as “Jack O’Lantern Surgery” (pumpkin carving), lunches, goodiegrams and a fun fair night. In addition, Fern Hill students have taken tours of Joseph Brant Hospital that allowed them to experience the hospital in a hands-on way. Under the supervision of the infection control staff, students had the opportunity to put their hands under ultraviolet light and expose all of the invisible bacteria which they loved. The tour gave the students context for further discussions back in the classroom.
Reflecting on the experience, Fern Hill’s director Wendy Derrick said, “Joseph Brant welcomed us with open arms. They leapt at the opportunity to work with us, and our students have loved learning about the Hospital, its programs and its future.” Fern Hill students intend to expand their fundraising initiative, and have introduced ideas to extend their campaign to other schools throughout the region. The entire Joseph Brant Hospital community is thrilled to see Fern Hill’s commitment to our organization, and we look forward to their future endeavours. Above: Fern Hill School

AN EVENING OF SONG
Dr. Brendan Chiu has a long history with our healthcare community. His family medical practice served Burlington residents for over four decades, and his son Stephen was born at Joseph Brant Hospital. For Dr. Chiu, the Our New Era campaign was an ideal opportunity to give back while showcasing his son’s musical talents! At the Evening of Song, held on October 17 at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre, Stephen shared his musical talents with guests in a performance that ranged from Frank Sinatra to Elvis. The event raised over $20,000 in support of Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation.
BEAUTY AND THE BISTRO: BE OUR GUEST, SAVE OUR BREASTS
The Leggat Chevrolet Buick Cadillac GMC dealership was once again transformed into a special venue for our third annual Beauty and the Bistro event, where supporters gathered in support of JBH and our goal of purchasing a digital mammography machine. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the dedicated and talented committee, the Beauty and the Bistro reached its fundraising goal of $450,000 in just three years, and Joseph Brant is now the proud owner of a new digital mammography machine, which is making a difference for women’s health.
JOELLE’S & JEFF’S GUYSHOP FASHION SHOW & FUNDRAISER
A special thank you goes to Joelle and Jeff Cooling, the planning committee and sponsors of the Joelle’s & Jeff’s Guyshop Fashion Show and Fundraiser for their tremendous support. Their stylish event raised an amazing $85,000 towards the purchase of a Digital Mammography unit with biopsy attachment.
