TRANSFORM LIVES, ONE WISH AT A TIME. MAKE-A-WISH ® CANADA 2016 ANNUAL REPORT

I wish to have my very own hideout Kael, 9 Combined Immunodeficiency Disorder makeawish.ca/kael

WE’RE OFTEN ASKED WHY WISHES MATTER. THE ANSWER IS QUITE SIMPLE.

A wish has the power to change the life of a child living with a critical illness; a child in your community — your neighbour’s daughter, your son’s best friend at school, his teacher’s nephew. Most of us can’t begin to imagine what these young people and their families go through: lengthy hospital stays, overwhelming medication schedules, time away from loved ones, procedures, operations, fear, anxiety, uncertainty… Make-A-Wish® offers these children an opportunity to dream, and dream BIG. A chance to return to their childhoods, if only for a day, and embrace the notion that anything is possible, even the future. A wish isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ it’s an essential part of their medical journey, offering hope, strength, joy and optimism during a very difficult time.

2 Make-A-Wish Canada 2016 Annual Report

Because of the generosity of our sponsors, donors and volunteers, we granted more than 550 wishes in 2016 to courageous children across Canada, a 13 per cent increase from 2015. On behalf of our wish families, thank you for your support! We have an ambitious vision – to grant the wish of every eligible child – and we have a long way to go in achieving it. We appreciate your time, effort and thoughtful consideration of the wish children and families we serve. Your involvement helps those when they need it most. With gratitude,

The Make-A-Wish Story

Justin, 7 Burkitt’s Lymphoma

IT STARTED WITH A DREAM 37 YEARS AGO... In 1980, seven-year-old Chris Greicius had one wish – to be a police officer. Unlike most children who have plenty of time to realize their dreams, Chris was living with leukemia and his prognosis was poor. With some incredible passion and hard work, a group of volunteers arranged for Chris to be sworn in as the first and only honourary officer in Arizona history. He was presented with an official badge, uniform and given a helicopter ride by his fellow officers. The magic of Chris’s wish was quick to spread. In 1983, BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver introduced a wonderful group of individuals to a 13-year-old girl named Debbie who was living with leukemia. Debbie wished to visit her grandparents in Germany. Using their own money, the group helped grant Debbie’s wish. Shortly after returning to Canada, Debbie passed away. In her memory and with the heartwarming completion of their first wish as inspiration, this small group of friends created Make-A-Wish Canada.

I wish to be a police officer

I wish to visit my grandparents in Germany Debbie, 13 Leukemia

Chris, 7 Leukemia Make-A-Wish Canada has granted more than 6,800 wishes to children in need. We are dedicated to creating a world of magic and bringing smiles to the faces of the children who, due to their illness, may be missing out on some of the joys of childhood that other kids take for granted. A wish-cometrue is an empowering experience for a sick child and their family.

PRABJOTE, OR ‘PJ’ AS HIS FRIENDS CALL HIM, IS A TEENAGER WHO DIDN’T LET HIS BATTLE WITH HODGKIN LYMPHOMA STOP HIM FROM DREAMING BIG. In fact, his career goal is to become Canada’s prime minister someday. When PJ found out that he was eligible to be a Make-A-Wish recipient, he knew that his wish was to be the nation’s leader. As the team at Make-A-Wish began preparations for his wish, they had ideas about the tour he could take of Parliament Hill and the politicians he could meet who would offer him career guidance. No one, including PJ, had any idea just how incredible his wish would become and how many people would end up sharing his story across the country and around the world. At home, in Brampton, Ontario, PJ’s wish granters told him that his wish would soon come true in Ottawa, and his first stop before then would be to visit Brooks Brothers to get clothing fit for a prime minister. Meanwhile in Ottawa, the Make-A-Wish team was in contact with the Prime Minister’s Office and other departments on Parliament Hill to see how they could make his wish more than he could ever imagine it to be. In February 2016, PJ flew from Toronto to the nation’s capital and upon arrival at Ottawa International Airport, his magical journey to Parliament Hill began. When he

landed at the airport, he was greeted by a member of the RCMP and escorted to the limo that would take him to the Fairmont Château Laurier. At the hotel, PJ was welcomed by the staff and shown his luxury accommodations in The Presidential Suite. These unexpected perks made him feel like a real prime minister. Soon, PJ’s wish received media attention from local, national and international news outlets and people took notice of this important new political figure as he made his way around Parliament Hill. He barely needed an introduction anymore and people who heard his story wanted to meet him and offer their advice to the budding politician. PJ had the opportunity to meet influential politicians and learn more about how to follow his political dreams. He even received a special address in the House of Commons, announcing him as honourary prime minister during the week of his wish. Meeting the actual prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, was an experience PJ and his family will never forget. PJ said that Trudeau was very humble and gave him some invaluable advice on how to be a great debater.

So much of PJ’s wish came to life thanks to the generosity of the Ottawa community, the kindness of people he met on Parliament Hill and the news outlets who helped PJ share his story. It was the wish heard around the world with over 45 million media impressions generated. PJ shares the impact of his wish: “To me, this wish represents my fight back against my cancer. Every second of it was amazing, from meeting the prime minister to going to the Supreme Court down to what I ate. Each and every second surprised me and made me feel on top of the world.” Thanks to the support and assistance of staff at the Prime Minister’s Office, the Senate, the House of Commons, the RCMP, the Prime Minister’s Protection Detail, Justice Brown and the staff at the Supreme Court of Canada, the Fairmont Château Laurier, WestJet Cares for Kids and Brooks Brothers, PJ experienced, first-hand, what it’s like to be Canada’s leader. To see a gallery of photos and a video from PJ’s wish, visit makeawish.ca/pj.

Supporter Spotlight: Lana Paton & Family Lana Paton is an adventurous Rope for Hope veteran and mom of two, with a “soft spot for children’s charities.” She currently sits on the National Board of Directors for Make-A-Wish Canada, and has since 2015. For three years now, Lana has participated in Rope for Hope Toronto, raising $10,000 for her first rappel alone! It wasn’t long before Lana’s daughter, Zoe, joined in on the action and rappelled with her mom. Ambitious and resourceful, Lana and her family are constantly finding ways to raise money for Make-A-Wish: they hold garage sales where they sell homemade baked goods and lemonade; and Lana’s son, Zack, plays his guitar in front of the local grocery store during the holidays to raise money, to which she and her husband match every dollar. While there are many charities Lana and her family could donate their time and money to, she explains what she loves about Make-A-Wish Canada: “I love that Make-A-Wish brings joy to families that really need it. They go above and beyond when granting wishes.”

Being a board member has impacted Lana’s life significantly. She credits her involvement to having a greater appreciation for the power of a wish, feeling more engaged with the cause and connected to the mission. “I feel that the board and Make-A-Wish staff are super passionate about the mission,” she says. When asked about the future, Lana has admirable goals: “I want to become a wish granter soon and raise enough money each year to grant two wishes.” Make-A-Wish Canada thanks Lana and the Paton family for their commitment to supporting Make-A-Wish.

“I love that Make-A-Wish brings joy to families that really need it. They go above and beyond when granting wishes.”

Campaigns that Made a Difference and Marked Milestones in 2016

Slo-Pitch for Kids In 2016, the Slo-Pitch for Kids (SPFK) charity tournament celebrated its 10th year of fundraising to help children in need. Make-A-Wish® British Columbia & Yukon is thrilled to be the recipient of funds raised from the tournament to support wishgranting efforts in the region. SPFK brings together up to 500 players across 34 teams to participate in the tournament each year in July. The 2016 tournament raised a record-setting $140,000, bringing the total funds raised for Make-A-Wish over the years to more than $600,000. The teams that participate in the tournament hold individual team fundraisers throughout the year; everything from variety shows to silent auctions and more. Come tournament weekend, all of the money raised throughout the year goes into the collective SPFK fundraising pot. During event weekend, SPFK donates

8 Make-A-Wish Canada 2016 Annual Report

funds from refreshments and raffle ticket sales to help raise the final fundraising tally even higher. What stands out most about this group is their continued dedication and passion for the Make-A-Wish mission. The same teams return almost every year for the event and they work together to make each tournament bigger and better. Not only are these people part of their individual slo-pitch teams, they also offer their support as volunteers and participants at other Make-A-Wish fundraisers, and do an incredible job as ambassadors for the organization. Thank you to the SPFK organizers and everyone involved in making the tournament a success, year after year! Visit slopitchforkids.org for more information.

48-HOUR RIDE Make-A-Wish® Québec celebrated the 10th anniversary of its largest annual

fundraising event, the 48-HOUR RIDE. Since 2007, more than $9.4 million has been raised by the event to support wishgranting efforts in Québec. For one weekend each September, a huge celebration takes place on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve at Parc Jean-Drapeau, as teams of cyclists take turns biking around the race track for 48 hours. Teams of six people raise $3,600 per team in order to participate. The 48-HOUR RIDE has grown into an incredible event, with vendor tents, mascots, dining halls, games etc., bringing entertainment to participants and visitors. In 2016, the 48-HOUR RIDE raised more than $1.9 million for Make-A-Wish Québec with more than 250 teams, 1,500 participants and 15,000 donors supporting the event. More than 350 volunteers also gave their time to help make the event a success. To mark the 10th anniversary of the 48-HOUR RIDE, Montréal Mayor, Denis Coderre, joined the event as its

honorary president. Québec personalities, Jean-Michel Anctil, Patrice Bélanger, Josée Lavigueur, Alex Perron, François Massicotte, François Morency and Herby Moreau were also at the starting line to cheer on the participants. Thank you to Manulife and all other sponsors for their support of the 48-HOUR RIDE. Visit 48hourride.ca for more information.

Calendar of Wishes On December 1, Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta kicked off a new campaign that brought the Edmonton community together to celebrate the joy of wish granting during an especially magical time of year. ®

In downtown Edmonton, a larger-than-life Advent calendar, the Calendar of Wishes, was on display. Each day, a door of the calendar was opened to reveal a wish that had recently been granted. A total of 24 inspiring wish stories were shared with the public in December. The calendar was a constant presence that sparked interest and

raised awareness about Make-A-Wish and the impact of our work. The local news media shared stories about the wishes, and special ceremonies revealing the wishes fostered emotional responses from the community, helping people understand the impact a wish can have on a family. Companies supported this campaign by sponsoring a door on the calendar in lieu of corporate gifts. It was a beautiful way to celebrate the joy of the holiday season by giving the gift of a wish. The Edmonton community was encouraged to donate to help open the community calendar door on December 24, revealing the final wish granted. The campaign raised $70,000 in 24 days thanks to the generosity of the local community and corporate sponsors.Visit calendarofwishes.com for more information.

Disney #ShareYourEars To honour the 100,000th Disney wish granted globally, and in celebration of Disneyland® Resort’s 60th anniversary, fans were invited to share images of people wearing Mickey Mouse ears or creative interpretations of ears. Photos uploaded to social media with the hashtag #ShareYourEars unlocked a $5 donation to Make-A-Wish from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, up to $1 million. The social media campaign brought together the public, media and celebrities to celebrate the joy of a wish and honour Disney’s contribution as an invaluable partner of Make-A-Wish. At the end of the campaign, Disney Parks announced that it would donate $2 million to Make-A-Wish® International, double the original pledge, to recognize the outpouring of public support. Proceeds from the sale of collectible 60th anniversary ear hats sold at Disneyland were also donated to Make-A-Wish.

In collaboration with our premiere partner, WestJet Cares for Kids, we created the Impact of a Wish video series illustrating the lasting power of a wish-come-true. The video series received more than four million views on Facebook and YouTube and was awarded a Gold Halo Award for Best Video Campaign from Engage for Good, North America’s most prestigious award for corporate social initiatives and cause marketing. We were thrilled to welcome new partners who continue to have a significant impact on our mission across the country. Both EB Games Canada and Party City Canada hosted store-level campaigns that raised nearly $400,000. Our steadfast

partners, including the Honda Canada Foundation, TuGo, Isagenix and Flight Centre Canada, continue to raise the bar with their efforts to support Make-A-Wish. We had another successful season of Make-A-Wish Rope for Hope, thanks to Canadian Western Bank, National Leasing, CSN Collison Centres and local sponsors. We’re excited to see our corporate community continue to expand. With their employees and customers rallying together for Make-A-Wish, we can ensure that every child we serve realizes their biggest dream and believes in a brighter future.
