Welcome to the start of the 2024 – 2025 Season and what is sure to be another exceptional year of ballet. We launch with one of our iconic triple bills, which have garnered The Sarasota Ballet a reputation for bringing together the very best of dance through the diversity of movement that is so essential to the art form of ballet.

Program One – Relative Works will be no exception, as it weaves a tapestry of traditional choreography and exciting creative vision from some of the today’s leading choreographers. We open with Johan Kobborg’s exciting production of Napoli Act III, making its long awaited return to the stage. Kobborg breathes this work to life with a refreshing take that resonates with beauty and vitality, while preserving the legacy of the Bournonville style for which Johan is so well known for capturing.

Returning for the first time since 2019, we present Ricardo Graziano’s hauntingly beautiful romantic ballet, Amorosa. It's highly sensual atmosphere and dramatic black and red costuming provides a stark contrast to the lighthearted tone with which we open the program.

We close with a world premiere from Virginia B. Toulmin & Muriel O’Neil Artist in Residence, Jessica Lang, whose work has been performed by many of the world’s leading ballet companies. In A Time of Beauty, she creates a vivid portrait of experience through movement framed by the music of George Frideric Handel to captivate the audience and transport them to another dimension.

Thank you for joining me and the entire Sarasota Ballet family as we kick off the Season together. We are so grateful for your enduring support that inspires us to continue to bring world-class artistry to the stage to entertain you, move you, and to hopefully keep you on the edge of your seats for this Season and many more to come.

NAPOLI ACT III

N

apoli is a joyful ballet that epitomizes Bournonville’s style and has become a signature piece of the Royal Danish Ballet. It marked his triumphant return to Copenhagen following a public fallout with the Danish King. A contemporary described its 1842 premiere as “unstoppable clapping and cheers…gaiety throughout the whole theatre, which could awaken the dead.”

Bournonville explained in his memoirs how his ballet had drawn inspiration from his Neapolitan experiences. “From my window, I observed in an hour more tableaux than I could use in ten ballets.” While offering an audience-pleasing, romantic, and ethereal fantasy for his Act II Grotto scene, he intentionally proposed a contrasting Neapolitan fishing community exuberance with folk dances like the tarantella for an Act III that passed in 1842 for earthy realism.

Johan Kobborg’s staging bears the legitimate imprimatur of an international star, steeped in the Bournonville style from his early training and years as a principal with the Royal Danish Ballet. What the modern audience gets in the sunny ebullience of Napoli Act III is an unbroken Danish tradition from 1842, exuberantly Italian in flavor, with Bournonville’s own, and many subsequent, alterations so that a living tradition constantly reinterprets a great heritage masterwork.

Johan Kobborg Choreographer

Johan Kobborg, born June 5, 1972, in Denmark, is a distinguished dancer and choreographer. He began his ballet training at 16 at the Royal Danish Ballet School and joined the company a year later, becoming a Principal in 1994. Kobborg performed major roles in works by Bournonville , Ashton, and Balanchine, and created lead roles in Peter Schaufuss’ Hamlet and Flemming Flindt’s Legs on Fire

In 1999, he joined The Royal Ballet as a Principal Dancer, showcasing his talents in leading roles and guest appearances with major companies, including American Ballet Theatre, The Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, and La Scala Ballet. His partnership with Ballerina Alina Cojocaru began with a celebrated performance of Romeo and Juliet in 2001, leading to a romantic relationship and engagement in 2011.

Kobborg's choreographic journey began at The Royal Ballet, where he created an acclaimed production of La Sylphide in 2005. His adaptation received glowing praise and multiple awards and has since been staged around the world. After leaving The Royal Ballet in 2013, he became Artistic Director of the Romanian National Ballet. Recently, he served as lead choreographer for Ralph Fiennes' 2018 film The White Crow and continues to create works for ballet companies worldwide.

AMOROSA

Striking images of passion and tenderness abound in Graziano’s Amorosa , initially created for The Sarasota Ballet’s 2018 - 2019 season. The Portuguese word ‘amorosa’ means ‘loving’, or ‘with a tender touch’, helping us understand the mood that underpins this work: an exploration of the act of devotion to another person, rather than an explicit study of the condition of love.

Amorosa was choreographed to Vivaldi's cello concertos to complement the light and shade he looked for in movement. Baroque music's contrapuntal nature, where two melodies take equal importance simultaneously, is ideal for a work where partners willingly reach out to one another, reveling in the intimacy of shared contact. Graziano's signature partner work is a feature of Amorosa so that dramatic counterpoints exist between partners: men balance women precariously, and couples use the force from an off-balance maneuver to swing into the next moment with abandon. Amorosa takes flight from the musical contrasts in the assembled score, which allows sensuality and vigor to infuse this piece. This is the second revival of Amorosa after its creation. The principal pas de deux has been performed in California, Mexico, and Japan.

Ricardo Graziano Choreographer

Ricardo Graziano began dancing at eight in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil. At 16, he earned a scholarship to the Academie des Tanzes in Mannheim, Germany, and joined Tulsa Ballet in 2005. In 2010, Graziano became a Soloist with The Sarasota Ballet and was promoted to Principal the following year.

At the start of the 2011 - 2012 Season, Graziano was given the opportunity by Director Iain Webb to choreograph his first ballet, Shostakovich Suite , which The Sarasota Ballet premiered in October 2011. Following this ballet, Graziano choreographed four new ballets before being appointed The Sarasota Ballet’s Resident Choreographer by Webb in 2014 after a performance of Graziano’s Symphony of Sorrows . During his 10 years as Resident Choreographer, he choreographed an additional 7 one-act ballets, including I n a State of| Weightlessness , which premiered August 12, 2015, as a part of The Sarasota Ballet’s first week-long residency at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.

Graziano's other notable works for The Sarasota Ballet include Pomp and Circumstance , Valsinhas , Before Night Falls , and Schubert Variations . In 2023, he choreographed Fledglings’ Playground , for the Connexus Dance Collective in Colorado Springs. In Spring 2024, he was invited to create a ballet for Richmond Ballet in Virginia.

A TIME OF BEAUTY

WORLD PREMIERE

For Jessica Lang's second world premiere with The Sarasota Ballet, she sought to create a piece that aligns with the style she established as Artist in Residence. Handel's 1707 oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno offered the perfect inspiration. Its exploration of the inevitable passing of time and the inexorability of decline excited Lang as she responded to its themes. Four characters represented through a succession of recitatives and arias depict how Pleasure encourages Beauty, only for Disillusion and Time to impart their understanding that temporal pleasures are fleeting.

With her typical sensitivity to artistic gestures, Lang's choreographic voice is shaped by the experiences she shares with her dancers in response to Handel's music. Not simply a retelling of Handel's oratorio, Lang was inspired scenically by a 2019 piece of public art exhibited in London by creative architecture studio KHBT with artist Ottmar Hörl. Entitled Lunch Break , small guardian angels swung outside that masterpiece of baroque architecture, St Paul's Cathedral. Handel's 1711 opera Rinaldo features the words "Leave the thorn, Pluck the rose." This resonates with the theme of time's passage, where deeper understanding and new experiences unfold as days go by.

Jessica Lang Choreographer

Jessica Lang is an acclaimed American director and choreographer, currently serving as The Virginia B. Toulmin & Muriel O’Neil Artist in Residence at The Sarasota Ballet and Resident Choreographer at Pacific Northwest Ballet. Since 1999, she has created over 100 original works for renowned companies worldwide, including American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, as well as her own company, Jessica Lang Dance.

Lang has made significant contributions to American Ballet Theatre, creating notable works such as Her Notes and ZigZag , the latter featuring Tony Bennett. She has also choreographed seven ballets on ABT Studio Company and was a founding faculty member of the JKO School. In opera, Lang directed and choreographed Stabat Mater at Glimmerglass Opera Festival and has choreographed productions of Aida and Salome

Lang, a graduate of The Juilliard School under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy, is a former member of Twyla Tharp’s company, THARP!. She is the recipient of a 2018 Martha Hill Mid-Career Award, 2017 Arison Award, and 2014 Bessie Award. She has been a fellow of NY City Center and NYU’s Center for Ballet and the Arts and was named 2019 Caroline Hearst Choreographer-in-Residence at Princeton University.
