As we reopen the Sarasota Opera House, we understand and share your health & safety concerns. Whether you are a seasoned opera lover or a newcomer, we strive to make sure you feel comfortable. Our volunteer ushers and staff are always around to answer questions. So please, don’t be shy! Here are some tips to make you feel at home in our theater, and to ensure you have the best possible experience. • English translations are shown above the stage so you can follow along, even when the opera is in a foreign language. • No special preparation is necessary when you come to the opera. This program book will provide you with all the information about our productions, including a full cast list, program notes, etc. You can also check our website, SARASOTAOPERA.ORG, for further information. • To ensure an enjoyable experience for you and other audience members, cell phones and electronic devices that make any kind of sound or emit light must be turned off while you are in the theater. Phone conversations, texting, and audio and video recording are not permitted. Leaving the real world behind for awhile and enjoying the beauty of opera will do you a world of good! • If you are late, you can watch and listen to a live stream of the performance in the Selby Lobby on the second floor. You will be seated in the theater at the first available opportunity. • For your convenience, the Box Office is open before all Sarasota Opera performances. Visit the kiosk in the lobby to purchase tickets for any performance or call (941) 328-1300. • Found articles should be turned in to the House Manager. Lost items may be claimed from the Sarasota Opera Box Office at 61 N. Pineapple Avenue, Monday through Friday between 10am and 5pm. • Sarasota Opera is equipped with hearing loop technology. Patrons who need auditory assistance but do not have hearing aids or implants may pick up hearing devices in the main lobby. For patrons who require visual assistance, binoculars are also available. A driver’s license or another form of identification is required to check out an assistance device. • Programs and casts are subject to change without notice. • Productions may contain special effects including, but not limited to, strobe lights and fog machines. © Sarasota Opera Association, Inc. 61 N. Chairman’s MESSAGE ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) )

O

n behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome you to a redesigned 2021 Winter/Spring Opera Festival. Sarasota Opera is excited to bring these Operas to you live on the stage, especially when there are so many opera companies around the world that remain closed. I want to use this year’s message to attempt to express our gratitude that Sarasota Opera is able to produce this Festival. Thank you to our community for your support. After the coronavirus pandemic forced an abrupt end to the 2020 Opera Festival and cancellation of the last 11 performances in March, over 500 of you (many new to us) responded to the Giving Challenge in April. Your generous support helped to pay our performers for the remainder of the season. For most of the artists, this was their only work for 2020. We are thankful to both Community Foundation of Sarasota County and The Patterson Foundation that operated the Giving Challenge and the donors who participated.

We are awed by the way the community continues to provide support during this pandemic. As can be seen from the sponsorships and contributions acknowledged throughout this program book, our patrons and donors (many new to us), as well as several local foundations, went above and beyond to continue to embrace Sarasota Opera as an important part of your lives. Thank you. The company is immensely grateful and inspired by your support. Thank you to the County Commissioners and legislative leaders for recognizing the arts as an important component of our local economy. The grant and loan support you provided is critical to our ability to offer these performances to our community. Thank you for your leadership. Thank you to the Board of Trustees. This year has demanded a more active participation from all of you. Thank you for your guidance and your contributions of time and expertise. Thank you to Sarasota Opera’s outstanding staff led by Executive Director Richard Russell and Artistic Director Maestro Victor DeRenzi. From the moment on stage performances were closed in March, you have worked tirelessly to understand and manage the impact of the pandemic. You created “revisioned ways” to reach out and to continue to deliver Opera to audiences and patrons. You seamlessly transitioned the Youth Opera Program to a successful on-line summer camp and fall semester. You upgraded sound and video systems to improve streaming capabilities. You upgraded the air conditioning systems to provide a safer indoor environment. You established safety practices for in-house audiences to experience HD and on-stage productions and for our artists to rehearse and perform them. You managed the venues and presented a “live and on-stage” fall concert (and streamed it) as well as two outdoor concerts and an OperaMobile and much more. And now, you produce this Winter/ Spring Festival Program that is an exciting adventure into four little gems of Opera. To our staff (and our volunteer ushers) we applaud your work and your dedication.

Artistic Director and Executive Director’s MESSAGE )

A

s we do every season, we want to welcome you to our 2021 Winter/Spring Festival. This year, our greetings are particularly heartfelt as we launch a season like no other

in our history and amidst the many challenges of a worldwide pandemic. When we prematurely ended our 2020 Winter Festival on (ominously) Friday, March 13, we envisioned a temporary shutdown and thought that when the fall came, we’d be back to business as usual. None of us imagined that opera houses, theaters, and concert halls around the world would be mostly shuttered for a year (and counting) and that most of our artists would be out of work. As we navigated the uncertainty of the situation, we realized that we couldn’t remain silent. Despite the health emergency, we felt it was important to keep a connection with our audience, community, and artists. That resulted in our Fall Concerts (indoors and out) and OperaMobile programming that replaced our cancelled fall production of Don Giovanni.

It was that same motivation that helped us develop this Winter/Spring 2021 program. We wanted to safely bring back

staged opera to our opera house and find a way to serve as much of our audience as we could. Therefore, we created a season of “socially-distanced” performances in the Opera House, that can also be streamed online, for those who don’t feel comfortable coming to a theater. We are particularly happy that in choosing the four operas for this season, we have found interesting repertoire that fits our health and safety requirements. In addition, because the number of artists (singers, orchestra, crew) required for these operas is small, we can perform them, as our mission states, “true to the vision of the composer,” at the same time keeping all of our company safe. Our performances of these operas will be almost exactly what Rossini, Pergolesi, or Purcell would have expected and the productions will be staged in the same way we would have done them had there been no COVID (except for perhaps a little less kissing, for safety’s sake). Over the past year, as we talked to our patrons, donors, and colleagues, it has become very clear to us that live music, opera, and all the arts are more important than ever. It provides us solace, comfort, and stimulation as we deal with the uncertainties of our current situation. We have to thank our donors and audience who have supported us through this crisis. It is your help that allowed us to pay last season’s artists through the end of their contracts, providing them with some income when the future looked extremely bleak. That continuing support has meant that we can keep working, providing virtual programming when we could (including our Youth Opera which has continued throughout the pandemic, barely skipping a beat), and letting us plan for the future. On behalf of our artists, staff, and community, we are extremely grateful.

The comedic style combines humor with social implications, establishing the prototype of feminine wit and plebeian ingenuity as victorious. ido and Aeneas is based on Book IV of Virgil’s epic The Aeneid. It is one of the earliest known English operas, and one of the most important and often performed operas written in the Baroque period. It is also Henry Purcell’s only true opera; that is, his only all-sung dramatic work.

Moreover, the dates of composition and the first performance are uncertain. It is known, through references in letters, that it was performed at a girls’ school in Chelsea, London, some time before the end of 1689.

Tribute to GREG TRUPIANO

Greg Tr upiano (December 13, 1955 – February 18, 2020)

I

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and New York City Opera. He’d tell anyone who asked, that his greatest operatic passion was for new work, and through his relationship with American Opera Projects, he worked with and gave feedback to many composers, librettists, and directors.

t is hard to imagine Sarasota Opera without Greg Trupiano. He was an integral part of our company for 33 years and a beloved and cherished friend to many of us. For those of us who work behind the scenes, as well as many who knew him through his interactions with our audience, guilds, and community, he was an important and visible part of our company. You may have seen him in the front of the theater, sometimes hawking our pre-performance talks, or just greeting our audience. But for most of his time at Sarasota Opera, he was the man who made things work. He was Victor DeRenzi’s right hand: the person who set up auditions, dealt with the artists and their managers, and put together the extraordinarily complex schedule of rehearsals. He had just about every aspect of the company at his fingertips and very often the answer to a question was: “Ask Greg.” Beyond the mechanics of the job, however, was a breadth of knowledge of opera and the art of putting on a performance. He was a valued second pair of eyes for our stage directors. As important, however, is the guidance that he offered to our artists. He was always available to meet for a cup of coffee to give career advice, provide feedback, and sometimes just be a shoulder to cry on. Besides Sarasota Opera, his impact on the opera industry was great. Earlier in his career he worked at San Diego Opera,

Greg was a native New Yorker and a fiercely proud Brooklynite. For years, in the off-season, he was a tour guide and knew things about his native city that surprised many who thought they knew the city well. Perhaps his greatest interest was Walt Whitman. He identified closely with three aspects of the great American poet: his connection with Brooklyn, his interest in opera, and his identity as a gay man. Because of this close connection, Greg, and his partner of 38 years Lon Black, started the Walt Whitman Project, an interdisciplinary arts organization that promoted the poet through readings and other events. We think Greg was happiest when talking about Whitman and reading his poetry. As recently as 2019, Greg led a poetry reading at Sarasota’s Bookstore1 in honor of the bicentenary of Whitman’s birth. Greg’s presence was felt in every aspect of Sarasota Opera. He would have wanted the show to continue, above all. That experience, however, will be much poorer for many of us, without Greg as part of the company, and our lives.

I hear not the volumes of sound merely, I am moved by the exquisite meanings, “I listen to the different voices winding in and out, striving, contending with fiery vehemence to excel each other in emotion; so do not think the performers know

themselves—but now I think I begin to know them.

– Walt W hitman

Raise Your VOICE ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) ) RAISE YOUR VOICE FOR SARASOTA OPERA

I

n this extraordinary season, Sarasota Opera has relied more than ever on the philanthropic support of our community. We have been inspired to see that community come forward to raise their voices for the opera company they love with annual gift renewals, special support during The Giving Challenge, and support of our special campaigns like the Sarasota Opera Relief Fund and Taste of Downtown.

The challenge continues, though, and the help we receive from a growing number of supporters enables Sarasota Opera to move forward with confidence. There are different ways you can join more than 1,000 of your fellow opera lovers this season who have endorsed our mission to entertain, enrich, and educate our vibrant community by producing opera true to the vision of the composer. Visit sarasotaopera.org/support for more information on how you can add your voice to the chorus of support for artistic excellence in opera.

Already a donor? Increasing your gift not only supports our season, it expands your involvement. Each donor level offers more access to opportunities to connect with artists, directors, conductors, and designers.

Ernie Kretzmer 22 T In loving memory of Alisa Kretzmer

A

lisa and Ernest Kretzmer first met on New Year’s Day in 1982, and were married exactly one year later. Alisa was born in Jerusalem and lived

there for the first 24 years of her life. Ernie lived in the lower Rhine region in Germany until he escaped from the evil regime at the age of 14. As it turns out, they lived for many years only nine miles apart in Monmouth County, New Jersey. When they met, both had been widowed and found they shared similar passions, including a love of classical music and opera. For well over 20 years they were dedicated patrons and supporters of Sarasota Opera and Ernie is continuing the tradition in Alisa’s memory.

While SYO looks forward to meeting in person again when

Opera has developed virtual programming for

it is safe to do so, our singers have been enthusiastic about

its young singers. SYO quickly moved to Zoom

the virtual youth opera program this year. SYO member Ovid

for rehearsals at the beginning of the pandemic, and rebuilt

recounts his experience during the pandemic while reminiscing

summer camp to be fully virtual. Singers had a combination

on a past production, “Getting to be on stage for Brundibár last

of live classes in chorus, acting, and opera history with pre-

year was incredible. A lot of things are different this year, but

recorded project-based classes in costumes, props & sets, and

something that hasn’t changed is my passion for the Sarasota

wigs & makeup.

Youth Opera.”

From the success of summer camp, SYO was inspired to create a unique experience for the school year. Stage Director Martha Collins joins Maestro Jesse Martins and Maestro George Hemcher at weekly youth opera rehearsals teaching acting. Martha added, “Usually I only see SYO for the fall production and Summer Camp, but this year I have been so happy to be a part of the program year round.” Maestro

challenges of online learning, “The methods that we rely on do not translate easily into the virtual world. At the same time, considering that kids are miles ahead when it comes to technology, we were able to develop a symbiotic process in which their know-how helped us capitalize on the possibilities.” All three staff members take smaller groups of singers and rotate their

virtual rehearsals between chorus, Opera 101, and acting. SYO has invited professionals who work in opera to talk in our Special Guest Series. Soprano Adelaide Boedecker, baritone Alexander Charles Boyd, costume designer Howard Tsvi Kaplan, stage director Mark Freiman, Executive Director Richard Russell, and Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi have been among some of the special guests who shared the story of their careers. In these sessions SYO members can ask questions and learn more about the different professions involved in the art form. Adelaide Boedecker, an SYO alumna, shared her experience as a special guest, “It was a pleasure to come full circle and talk with SYO members. I loved being able to discuss how pivotal a role SYO played in preparing me for the field of opera. It was a joy to give SYO members insight into what life as a professional opera singer looks like. The main aspect I enjoyed was witnessing the passion that SYO members have for opera and the arts. I’m so thankful that I was given the opportunity to talk with them!”
