The Healing Powers of The Ocean

By: Thaddeus Dietrich, Realtor®, NextHome Excellence

Have you ever wondered, “what is so captivating about the smell of the ocean air or the sound of the waves crashing on the shoreline?” As it turns out, there is more to it then we think.

ENHANCE MENTAL HEALTH

Research shows how a trip to the beach can enhance our mental health. As professionals in an industry where our business is generated by our actions, we often hear how important our health is and how it can change the trajectory of our performance. It’s easy to understand; when we feel better, we do better.

Our mental health consists of many factors, including the foods we eat, exercise, getting enough sleep, and the environment that we are in. A person’s condition regarding their physiological and emotional well-being has a lot to do with how the brain operates, but how does going to the beach change that?

According to Chenchehen Peng’ Kazuo Yamashita and Eiichi Kobayashi, researchers at the Graduate School of Maritime Sciences in Japan, residents who live near the coastline show higher positive psychological effects than residents who don’t. As a real estate professional in a coastline market, I can personally attest that Sarasota has attracted many new residents because of the Gulf of Mexico.

RELAX YOUR MIND

According to the South African College of Applied Psychology, “staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves and puts us into a mildly meditative state, and listening to the waves activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which makes us more relaxed.” Just make sure you bring your sunglasses and sunscreen. You do not want to get sun burned on Siesta Key beach!

The ocean and gulf are truly extraordinary. The water has the power to heal mental health and relax the mind. So, pack your beach bags and coolers! See you out there. •
