Neighborhood Spotlight

Nokomis

By: Daniel MacKinnon, Realtor®, Keller Williams on the Water Sarasota

Located in South Sarasota County, Nokomis is a small unincorporated town known as a laid-back coastal community that includes the island of Casey Key. Nokomis’ pristine public beaches offer activities such as sunrise yoga and sunset drum circles. Public parking lots line the south end of Casey Key Road, where ample space is available to enjoy the crystal clear waters that make for perfect shark tooth hunting and enjoying the best the Gulf Coast has to offer.

Buyers looking for larger lots and a quieter lifestyle, as well as location to the new Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice located in Nokomis, has created more demand in the area. SMH-Venice will offer a full slate of medical and surgical care in their state-of-the-art 5-story hospital located off of Laurel and Pinebrook.

Education is another highlight of the community with the combined K-8 classes at Laurel Nokomis School. High school students cross the bridge to Venice. Gifted students may also attend Pine View, the #1 school in Florida, located in the neighboring town of Osprey.

The coastal vibes continue with food, drink, and live music at one of the half dozen waterfront dining locations. Daily adventuring can include walking/bike riding on Sarasota’s famous Legacy Trail or visiting the nature trails of Oscar Scherer State Park.

New communities like Divosta’s Talon Preserve, D.R. Hortons Toscana Isles, and Neal’s Vicenza are delivering attractive, amenity-filled communities that draw interest from residents looking for less responsibility and more fun. Nokomis has an eclectic mix of homes from Casey Key mansions, to coastal cottages of the 1950s ranging from 800 -1,400 square feet to new homes ranging 1,800-2,800 square feet. •
