Comfortaa is a rounded, geometric, sans-serif typeface family.
Designed in the mid-1920’s. Its geometric shapes were inspired by the Bauhaus, the German arts&crafts school/movement. The font was commercially released in 1927 with additional weights being added in the years after. Neufville claims to sell the most authentic version.
This is revival of the 1913 typeface "Glass Antiqua" by "Genzsch & Heyse" found in the Taschen book "Type: A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles, 19011938." A magnificent and unique design with a Jugenstile fleur, combining Slab Serif and Antiqua, plus elements of cursive calligraphy. It is suitable for any purpose, giving a text a retro feel and soft informal look. The character set is extended.

Rationale
Pittsburgh Derby Brats is committed to helping teen and preteen girls build their self-esteem, their skills, and their friendships. Instead of projecting the typical “girly” image, one where girls play with Barbies and have tea parties, the Pittsburgh Brats tell girls they can be superheroes. The Pittsburgh Brats promote strength and resiliency, presenting a typographic challenge: the fonts must be feminine, but cannot skew towards being too childish or being too mature. After collecting a lot of script fonts, I found Vanilla Daisy. The typographer states in the font description the font was “created not too feminine or masculine,” which makes it ideal for the Pittsburgh Brats. It is an eye catching, curving font, flowing easily from one letter to the next. It would be excellent on jerseys, signage, and it will also reproduce well on screen. The font must be used at a larger size to retain readability, allowing it to be the logical choice for the headline text. The font also contains a number of alternate characters, allowing for the customization of headlines and player’s names. The Subhead text is Comfortaa, designed by Johan Aakerlund. The font is a geometric san serif font also designed to be used at large sizes. This font would be ideal on the backs of derby jerseys. The geometric forms contrast with Vanilla Daisy’s flowing, handwritten characters, but it
still retains some of the feminine feel. The rounded terminals on all of the fonts help to soften the font’s look, making it more youthful. The geometric shapes were important to font selection for two reasons: first, roller derby depends on the wheels of the skates, which are round. Second, there is a definite retro/80s feel to roller derby. Comfortaa has the throwback, retro feel Pittsburgh Brats needs to portray. The body copy, intro copy, and caption fonts are all within the Futura family, designed by typographer Paul Renner in 1927. Renner was a follower of the Bauhaus, which taught extremely modern design for the time period. By stripping away the unnecessary ornamentation, form and function produced clear communication. Because of this clarity, Futura was chosen for usage in the body, intro, and caption texts. It also has an extensive range within the font family: light, book, medium, demibold, bold, and ultra. These all have condensed versions as well, giving the designer maximum flexibility. Since derby requires an extensive amount of information based around statistics, forms are used for every bout to track scores and player progress. A font with flexibility is needed to allow for a large amount of text on a page. The various weights can set up hierarchy and allow the user to locate information quickly. The condensed weights will help with fitting as much information onto the page as possible.
Glass Antiqua was chosen for the pull quote text. This font, designed by Denis Masharov, was chosen to contrast with Comfortaa. While it retains the playful, rounded terminals, it is a serif font. This is a common contrast technique. Glass Antiqua is a revival typeface, based off of a 1913 version of a font with the same name. The letter forms do have a playful appearance, however the characters are solid, upright, and sturdy, creating a feeling of strength and resiliency at the same time.
