Lost Wax Casting, $100.00 Artist Statement While studying Ceramics at the State University of New York at Buffalo I was introduced to the Jewelry Studio by an artist friend. I did not know that we could study Silversmithing so I immediately signed up for their courses offered in Metals - Design and Fabrication and couldn’t stop. The first time I held the torch in my hand I became mesmerized. Placed in a trance by the beauty and the power of the flame as it danced and played with the metal and I knew I was in love with it. Learning as much as I could from my first teacher about lamination and marrying metals together, forging with hammers, creating textures, and developing composition I dedicated my life to mastering the use of the jewelry studio tools. I left the University as a studio assistant and became a goldsmith’s apprentice and diamond setter. Began the long road of acquiring my own bench and tools and develop style, as well as technique with nature as my guide. I realized after accidentally melting many early pieces that the piece would talk to me and let me know where it wanted to go, what the limits where, and in a sense create itself. I began to listen and learn about the personality and distinct characteristics of the metal, and looked at each stone and saw the metal around it accent the beauty that nature has already made, and that I am only embellishing it through imaginative thought, skilled craftsmanship, and love for the art of Silversmithing. Artist Biography Matt Balint is a Master Silversmith and Goldsmith and has been dedicated to teaching Metal Arts and Design for over 15 years offering courses in Design and Fabrication and Lost Wax Casting to adults, college, and high school students. Along with offering workshops he is currently working as an artist in residence at Shenendehowa High School and other high schools throughout Saratoga County. He holds a BA degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a MST degree in Education from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Aside from being a teacher he is also a Master Jeweler. Trained as a goldsmith by internationally acclaimed artist and jeweler Dennis deJonghe he has been working in the field as a bench jeweler for over 25 years creating jewelry for local galleries and shops, and designing pieces with clients through private commission.

Shawn Banner, Rosalie's Favorite, Tribute to Justin, Print, $135.00 Artist Statement Regardless of subject matter or mode of rendering, my work reflects a sense of whimsy, a sense of style, a love of the beautiful, and an abiding love of the arts and art history. I am an Illustrator, and to be an illustrator, one must be a story-teller. I love a good story, and this is reflected in the narrative quality of my work. Finally, above all, I am at my core, an optimist, which I hope shines through in my work, giving you, dear viewer, reason to smile.

Robert Carsten beautiful and bold color in pastel landscapes workshop
nightscapes in pastel; autumn light in pastel; gorgeous realism and colorful impressionism

1.Robert Carsten, Nearing Sunset, Acrylic on canvas, $825 2.Robert Carsten, Impression/ Waterfall, pastel, $825 Artist Statement From an early age I was drawn to art, particularly drawing and painting. I studied both traditional and non-traditional forms of design and to this day, work in various different styles of presentation ranging from realism to impressionism, expressionism and abstraction. Generally, I categorize my different ways of approach into series, where each series has parameters in method, subject, medium etc. Artistic expression to me is like creating a whole new world where anything and everything is possible. It is both very hard work and very enjoyable play. Artist Biography Award-winning artist Robert Carsten, PSA, attended the Art Students League of New York, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Accademia di Belle Arti (Italy). He works in various mediums and is a master pastelist and signature member of the Pastel Society of America, master circle artist in the International Association of Pastel Societies, Lifetime Honorary member of the Southwest Florida Pastel Society, signature member of the Connecticut Past Society, and Advisory Board member of Pastel Society of America. Ralph D. Caparulo the collage • painting in gouache

1.Ralph D. Caparulo, Hwang-Ti, 2004, mixed media sculpture, $800 2.Ralph D. Caparulo, Hotaru-Dani, 2016, mixed media sculpture, $3,000 3.Ralph D. Caparulo, Butsudan, 2003, mixed media sculpture, $1500 4.Ralph D. Caparulo, Sori, 2014, mixed media sculpture, $2,000 Artist Statement I have been exploring the reliquary as both a sacred and mythological object of veneration. Historically reliquaries were used before the Crusades, at the beginning of organized Christian worship. Often (perhaps, more often than not) the contents of reliquaries are not necessarily what they are purported to be. This poses an aesthetic challenge: to take the objects and the concept and interpret them purely as art, based on cryptic historical objects. By re-investigating various interpretations of mythological characters and landscapes, each sculpture becomes an addition to a personal design vocabulary – a poetic narrative of deliberate simplicity, which I embellish with geometric and architectural shapes. The intent is to create an image that draws me in and will draw the viewer in as well. Artist Biography Originally from New Haven, Connecticut, I reside in Galway, New York. Education: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Silvermine College of Art, University of Hartford Art School (BFA), University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Art (MFA). My life-long teaching career has paralleled the development of my own work. Received awards in juried venues across the country. My work hangs in permanent collections at the Hyde Collection (Glens Falls, NY), The Museum of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia), Bergen Museum of Art and Science and the Noyes Museum (both in NJ). On faculty at Schenectady County Community College and participate in the mentor program at Skidmore College.

My practice of art is a combination of reflection and aspiration. It shows my desire for knowledge and order, tempered by acceptance of an entropy filled environment. I have come to believe that all is perishable, in transit from one state to another. I seek to express a vision that walks a line between our conscious and subconscious experiences of this, creating works that focus on the most persistent aspects of my subjects.

 Artist Biography
Born in Saratoga Springs, Jim is an identical twin. He has had the good fortune to be able to study directly from the drawings of Leonardo DaVinci in Windsor Castle and to have had the patronage of such luminaries as Randy Lerner. Jim is proud of his home town and the teaching opportunities offered within by the Arts Center. He continues to live and work within the city keeping the company of family and friends while contemplating artistic endeavors.

1. Emma Huneck, Flowed, Flow, Flowing, Mixed Media on Paper, 2014, $800
 2. Emma Huneck, Pt. I, Mixed Media on board, 2015, $500
 3. Emma Huneck, Pt. II, Mixed Media on board, 2015, $500 Artist Statement
How important is the artist’s thought process to the viewer? As they portray their inner selves through their medium, should that speak for itself? When viewing a piece, does one see what the artist saw when creating it? Or, do they pull from personal experience to determine what they take away from an artwork?

Drawing influence from my travels, as well as from moments of my everyday existence and the inner workings of my being, I wish to raise these questions and leave interpretation of the work up to the viewer. Just as one knows themselves in a way others cannot, my work contains internal characteristics which provide an outlet for understanding and expression.

 Artist Biography
Emma Huneck was born and raised in Clifton Park, New York. She received her BFA from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2014 and has exhibited in multiple galleries across New York State.

Intending to leave the thought process behind her work ambiguous, she uses a variety of medium to portray a personal response to her subject matter. She hopes her work sparks a unique emotional response from each viewer.

Joseph A. Marcuccio introduction to digital photography

1. Joseph A. Marcuccio, Via David Silvagni, Archival Digital Image, $180 2. Joseph A. Marcuccio, Compagnano Arches, Archival Digital Image, $180 3. Joseph A. Marcuccio, Venetian Passage, Archival Digital Image, $180 Artist Statement The three images are a photographic composition depicting several sites and regions of Italy. Small alleys, lanes or paths are called “Vico” in Italian. Photographs one and three have been digitally painted to create an artistic look and feel of the vicos, as they were painted pieces on canvas. The first photograph is called “Compagnano Arches” taken in the Province of Caserta in the Italian region of Campania Italy. The small village of Castel Compagnano is located about 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Naples. Founded in 979 A.D. the village has an interesting historical past centered upon the Parish of St. Mary of the Snow. The church was renovated in 1753 and now has baroque and neoclassicism characteristics. “The Compagnano Arches” located on a Via Maria leads villagers through the narrow streets to the church. The second photograph is called “Venetian Passage” located in the famous Veneto region of Italy. The photograph was taken on a gondola ride through the Venetian streets. Venetian streets rise out from the water and the viewer experiences a glimpse of time and place. The photo closes in on a passage of the lagoon upon which the city has been built. Reflections in the calm water mirror the colors of the ancient buildings. The third photograph is an alley passage called “Via David Silvagni” located in Rome in the famous Lazio region of Italy. The photograph was taken on a calm quiet stroll through the Monte Verde, Via Carina area of Rome. The floral colors are festive and the vegetation is alive with summer green hues and blue skies. Artist Biography Joseph A. Marcuccio is a Saratoga Springs resident and Professor of Digital Communications and Transmedia at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. Joe teaches graphic design, digital photography and studio photography at FMCC and has taught summer courses at The American University of Rome in Rome Italy. Joe has received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in teaching. He is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology and holds a BS in Printing Management and Photography and an MS in Curriculum Planning and Development from SUNY Albany. Mikiko Masterson camp creativity • teen arts • imagination rules

1. Mikiko Masterson, A Breeze of Japan, Watercolor, 2011, $380 2. Mikiko Masterson, Under The Pond, Watercolor, 2013, NFS, Prints Available. 3. Mikiko Masterson, Under The Stream, Watercolor, 2015, NFS, Prints Available. 4. Mikiko Masterson, Botanical Garden, Watercolor/ Pencil, 2015, $380 5. Mikiko Masterson, Garbera Dance, Watercolor, 2015, NFS, Prints Available. Artist Statement Like most children that grew up in Japan, my introduction to artistic techniques originated in the need to learn how to draw Japanese Kanji characters. The practice of using brush stroke and line choice as a means of expressing emotion is a fundamental aspect of Japanese written communication that does not translate well in cultures that use Roman letters. I believe this same desire to communicate through my brush is what led to my desire to develop my skills as an artist. Through the classes I have taught since moving to the United States, and in the pieces I have exhibited from time to time, I am thrilled to introduce some of the lessons I learned growing up in Tokyo, and to raise awareness of Japanese painting techniques. Artist Biography Mikiko Masterson currently teaches mixed media and Japanese ink art techniques to children during school breaks at the Saratoga Art Center. She also paints watercolor and Japanese ink brush at her home in Clifton Park. Her work has been displayed at several exhibits since moving to the United States over ten years ago, and examples of her work can also be seen at www.JapaneseBreeze.com. Mikiko is a Japanese citizen, and spent most of her life in Tokyo. She learned calligraphy at an early age, but was later inspired to explore a broader range of artistic techniques after becoming exposed to Japanese masterpieces, and through her travels in Southeast Asia. She studied traditional Japanese brush painting with renowned Japanese master artist Hiroshi Yasuda in Tokyo, whose works have been displayed in Tokyo’s Ginza district and other venerable galleries. After moving to the United States, she also studied watercolor painting at the Interlaken Art School in Lenox, MA. Mikiko was recently recognized as the 1st prize winner for a watercolor painting that was displayed at the Clifton Park Library’s 2015 annual jury art show.

Kirsten O’Brien camp creativity • teen arts • imagination rules

1. Kirsten O’Brien, Loss of Youth, Silver Gelatin BW Photography, NFS Artist Statement As an elementary educator as well as an art educator I tend to use children as the inspiration for my work. I explore many of the controversial aspects of 21st century education in my artwork. Braided throughout my work are themes of the pressures of the outside world on children, growing up too fast, as well as loss of creativity and imagination in the elementary school curriculum. Artist Biography Kirsten O’Brien grew up in Schuylerville, New York. Growing up, Kirsten was always drawn to art. Her mother was always trying to find ways to support Kirsten in her artistic endeavors, helping her to solve problems and providing her with the resources she needed to make her art come alive. Kirsten went to college at SUNY Plattsburgh for Elementary Education with a concentration in Art. With teaching in mind, she worked hard to gain experience in a variety of mediums: drawing, ceramics, graphic design, and photography. She wanted to be able to provide future students a variety of experiences using a number of different mediums. Kirsten understands the importance of art education in the elementary and high school setting. Art allows students to problem solve, become independent thinkers, and is also an outlet for many of the stresses that students face today. Kirsten hopes that the students she teaches will find the same joy that art brings her in her own life.

Robert O’ Brien, Emily, watercolor, 2012, $1,500 Artist Statement I have been painting in the watercolor medium for over forty years. One of my main objectives in watercolor painting is to create light through the use of shadow. In painting ordinary images, I find a fascinating interplay between the two. The transparency of the medium helps in bringing shadows alive while allowing the light to glow. My recent paintings have emphasized close focus features of a particular subject giving the piece an almost abstract quality, with great attention placed on composition and value. I’ve also been exploring portraiture and figurative works. One of my objectives is to transform mundane, everyday scenes into beautiful works of art.” Artist Biography Robert J. Gemstones originate deep underground and must be mined and then cut before they take the form we are familiar with. My drawings contrast raw and organic graphite spills with refined and faceted renderings of jewels. They tell a story about transformation, that making something beautiful can involve great effort, and that even etherial things can be rooted in the earth. Artist Biography Katherine McDowell Patterson received her BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art. Her work has been shown at the Zabriskie Gallery and Pheonix Gallery in Manhattan and Brooklyn Artist's Gym, Momenta Gallery, MicroMuseum and NurtureArt Gallery in Brooklyn. Regionally, she has shown her work at the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY, Saratoga Arts Center, LARAC, Pelham Art Center, Cooperstown Art Association and Chautauqua Institute among others. Corey Pitkin all media portrait workshop • all media costumed portrait painting children from photographs

1. Corey Pitkin, Living In The Body, oil on wood, 2014, $1,500 2. Corey Pitkin, Groundhog's Day, oil on panel, 2016, $2,000 3. Corey Pitkin, Keepsake, oil on panel, 2016, $3,500 Artist Statement Each time you remember something you reinforce the memory but remove it one step further from the event. The imagination fills in details that you didn’t notice at the time. The mind glosses over bits deemed unimportant; the emotions that seemed so imperative at the time fade into obscurity. Sequences fall out of place and unrelated events collide to make an entirely new memory. Before you know it your “memory” is more daydream than chronicle. It is in this meeting of real and imagined that I paint from. An idea or scene will strike me as needing to be reimagined: I pull a bit from here, add a bit there until I see what it should have been originally. I reshape smaller worlds into the better place that I remember. Artist Biography As a predominantly self-taught artist Corey Pitkin credits the the isolation of growing up in a tiny southern Adirondack country town as affording him the opportunity to refine his abilities to a higher degree than might have been possible in a more metropolitan environment. By the time he was out of high school Corey had won multiple awards in regional and national competitions.

After a loss of creative focus in his twenties Corey has resurfaced with a renewed passion for his art. Within the a span of several years he has gone from a relative unknown to an award winner in local, national and international competitions, most recently as a Finalist in International Artist magazine Challenge #90, People & Figures and the Laumeister Fine Art Competition in Bennington, VT.

When he's not in the studio Corey is often found conducting workshops on portraiture and painting technique. He currently lives in Broadalbin with his wife Esther and children Connor, Anastasia, and Xavier.

Tom Ryan watercolors for beginner - intermediate

1. Tom Ryan, A Taste of Africa, watercolor, 2013, $290 2. Tom Ryan, Paddling in the Mist, watercolor, 2015, $260 3. Tom Ryan, Beautiful Rocks, watercolor, 2013, $290 4. Tom Ryan, Lift Off, watercolor, 2014, $390 Artist Statement I live in the Adirondacks and enjoy the great natural beauty and historical significance of upstate New York. The Adirondacks are unsurpassed for artistic inspiration, particularly the lakes, the rivers, the atmospheric effects of light, fog, rain, and mist, or a snowy landscape. I find transparent watercolor the ideal medium to capture these shifting moods. I love to create luminous and colorful watercolors that depict serenity, harmony, and beauty. My favorite season is fall when the trees are most colorful and beautiful. Each color theme reflects my emotional response to the subject, with playful choices of color that may or may not relate to the actual color of the subject. My approach is to push color to express emotion, delight the eye, be daring perhaps, and enjoyable. I rely on my imagination for color choice and hope viewers see a pleasing painting that reflects the fun I had painting it. Painting outdoors is truly exhilarating. I do obtain many good results from plein air, however, I also find that sometimes I can obtain a better result from a studio painting based on the plein air piece. I attempt to improve the composition and color while retaining the emotional response I experienced outdoors. For studio paintings, I typically first soak the watercolor paper and utilize a wet-inwet technique to allow the paint, water, and paper to spontaneously interact and create wonderfully mysterious effects and soft edges. Once the paper dries, I add strong vivid color for interest and to emphasize the focal point in the painting. Artist Biography I grew up in Schuylerville, New York, enjoying the natural beauty and historical significance of upstate New York. I paint on location and in my home studio in Queensbury. I have painted for many years and participated in several shows, lectured, and demonstrated watercolor painting, and judged art competitions. I have taught beginning and intermediate watercolor classes at the Saratoga Arts Center for fifteen years and have led beginning and intermediate watercolor workshops in Glens Falls, Clifton Park, Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Blue Mountain Lake, and other locations. I was awarded signature membership in the North East Watercolor Society and am past president of the Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society, Glens Falls, New York. Currently, with Sue Beadle, I am co-leader of a regional plein air painters group, Plein Air Adirondack. I have also led local workshops in plein air painting. I have received numerous awards for my watercolors including being juried into the highly competitive 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 North East Watercolor Society Annual International Exhibitions and 25th Annual Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors at The Art Center, Old Forge, New York. In 2000, I received an individual artist grant from Saratoga Arts, for a project involving the historic Bow Bridge in Hadley, New York. One of the outcomes of this grant was a published book I compiled The Art and History of the Bow Bridge that includes my own art as well as that of several other individuals.

Nancy Sharples weaving

1. Nancy Sharples, Silk Shawl, raw silk lace weave with ribbons, $250 2. Nancy Sharples, Ecuador I, framed, tapestry, wool on cotton warp, NFS 3. Nancy Sharples, Ecuador II, framed, tapestry, wool on cotton warp, NFS 4. Nancy Sharples, Fall, block weave rug, ikat dyed wool weft on cotton warp, NFS Artist’s Statement My fiber artwork is almost always about color. Whether weaving a scarf, rug, or wall piece, my concern is with the interaction and use of colors. By varying value, shade and hue, I can create a wide range of surfaces. This creates a calm or lively mood to each piece. I particularly enjoy the use of subtle color color changes to imply movement and progression. The tapestry doors use a quiet palette of colors to create realistic images. My intent is to show light and shadow patterns that create variations in textures. Doorways can give us a glimpse into someone’s life, yet they either invite us into that life or block our entry to it. The doorway stands as a symbol for my attempt to learn and understand the life and culture of those who live a life very different from my own.

Artist Biography Since completing a Master’s Degree from Rhode Island School of Design, Nancy has been teaching weaving at all levels from Kindergarten to Graduate School. After teaching at Endicott College in Massachusetts, she spent 15 years teaching fiberarts at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. This was followed by 15 years presenting Artist- in-Residence workshops in public schools in the Capital Region. Many of these programs dealt with Navajo or Medieval Tapestry Weaving. Nancy was one of the first teachers hired by the Art Center to teach in its Studio Art Programs and has taught weaving classes for 20 years. Her work has been shown at galleries in Boston, Washington DC, Providence, RI and throughout the Capital District.

Takeyce Walter, Goldenrod, pastel, $250 5. Takeyce Walter, Lake Light, pastel, $250 Artist Statement The beauty found in nature often overwhelms me. I am driven by an ever-present and irresistible urge to capture that beauty to share with others. My recent work reflects the beauty I see in the natural landscape around me. I am most inspired by, and drawn to quiet and peaceful scenes. The paintings are of places I’ve experienced with all of my senses, composed with intent to reconstruct the sense of connectedness I feel with nature. My process of creating art is nourishing, energizing, and exhausting all at once. My goal when starting a painting is to capture the impression a place or a moment has left upon me. I need not lay down every blade of grass to capture the mood and atmosphere that originally drew me to a composition. I work primarily with oil paint and soft pastels to capture these moments. I am inspired, and I hope that my work inspires others to take pause, and really experience the beauty around us. Artist Biography Takeyce Walter is truly inspired by the landscape. This is ever apparent when standing before any of her paintings. Walter’s work in oil and pastel present the landscape of the Northeast in all its glory. There is a great sense of familiarity, calm, and peacefulness in each piece. The paintings feature the rural landscape of upstate New York, the Adirondacks, Cape Cod, and Vermont. Walter is especially inspired by, and drawn to the water; rivers, lakes, marshes, streams and the ocean. She is fortunate to live in close proximity to the beautiful Hudson, Mohawk, Au Sable Rivers and visits the beaches of Cape Cod during the summer. Walter is a painter and art instructor whose return to painting in 2005 has been documented on her blog. She made a commitment to finishing at least one painting a week and started blogging to help track her progress. Many years later, she has maintained that commitment and is currently producing art on a prolific basis. In addition to exhibiting her paintings online, she also exhibits in local venues in the Upstate New York Capital Region. Her art has found homes in many private collections across the country, and internationally.

Susan Wiley, The ‘Just Because’ Bouquet, watercolor, $900 Artist Statement I find watercolors the most exciting medium in that it interacts with you; it moves and at times, has a life of its own. It’s a challenging medium. Colors are most important in my paintings. Through them, I hope to catch the viewer’s eye and hold his attention for a few moments to evoke an emotional response.” Susan sees art as a way of achieving a center for herself and for the viewer. Artist Biography Susan Wiley is a graduate of Queens College and has worked in nursing and in publishing before settling into a full-time career in art. She has applied her creativity to many art forms including that of furniture, doing national furniture shows, murals for designer homes, and now studio work. Kirt Winslow camp creativity • teen arts

1.Kirt Winslow, Take Off, Acrylic, 2014, $2,500 2.Kirt Winslow, Majestic, Acrylic, 2014, $500 3.Kirt Winslow, Hybrid Theory (Cross Pollination), Prismacolor Pencil, 2015, $600 Artist Biography I am a 2003 graduate of The College of Saint Rose with a major in Art Education that included a focus in drawing and painting. Currently, I am a high school art teacher at Schuylerville Central School and have been for the past ten years. Also, I am a summer art camp instructor at Saratoga Arts Center working primarily with students ages eight through twelve. I have had two solo exhibits; one at the Hudson River Music Hall in Hudson Falls, New York and the other at Sammy D’s Cafe in Lake George, New York. Additionally, I have had my work displayed in shared exhibitions at a variety of local galleries. I enjoy traveling with my wife to locations that allow me the opportunity to find new inspiration for future artwork. In my spare time, I continue to grow as an artist by taking classes in figure drawing and attending workshops that focus on specific mediums and techniques.

Artist Statement I am most often inspired by the time I spend outdoors in nature, viewing both animals and plants. It is these opportunities that recharge my artistic nature and the artwork I produce after these escapes. Locally, I am fortunate to live in a location that, in the warmer months, affords me a number of destinations to draw inspiration from. The autumn months are my favorite season and when I feel most artistically charged; from the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival to the majestic fall foliage of the High Peaks, as well as seeing the daily changes during my time in downtown Saratoga Springs and Congress Park. Weekend trips also include the chance to see animals not a part of my everyday life. A couple of notable adventures were to The Wild Center in Tupper Lake and The Adirondack Wildlife Refuge, where I was able to experience a Walk with the Wolves. Summertime also allows for longer escapes; in 2015, my wife and I took a thrilling trip to western Pennsylvania to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. I cannot wait to start painting from the photos I took of the landscape and architecture. Recently, I have also expanded my passion for nature to incorporate fantasy elements.
