MAKING THE ORDINARY EXTRAORDINARY: PAINTING LIGHT IN WATERCOLOR WITH ROBERT J. O’BRIEN Join award winning and internationally known watercolorist Robert O’Brien and learn how to paint “the light”! This course will explore techniques on how to achieve spectacular light effects from ordinary images through the use of light and shadow. Subject matter will range from landscape, flowers, to close focus studies of architectural and agricultural motifs. Composition and values will be explored in this workshop. All levels of painting ability are welcome. Students will work from photo reference. Some drawing experience is recommended. There will be a critique and class discussion at the end of the workshop. Most artists are familiar with color wheels and color theory, but putting that knowledge to work can still be tricky when it comes to successfully mixing paint to achieve the desired results. Artist and instructor Tom O’Brien will help make sense of it all by exploring value, hue, chroma and discussing the importance of warm and cool aspects of colors to assist in quickly achieving results on your pallet. PAINTING THE WINTER LANDSCAPE WITH TAKEYCE WALTER
Winter scenes can be some of the most beautiful paintings, but can also be one of the trickiest color compositions to master. Students will explore the techniques often used in painting a winter scene. Emphasis will be on techniques using soft neutral hues, introducing and using appropriate color to develop engaging winter compositions. Takeyce will be working with pastels or oil paint to provide demos, and students will be provided with one-on-one feedback, reference material, and assignments to practice the techniques learned at home. DECEMBER CAMP CREATIVITY (ages 8 - 14) Our full-day school break camp for children ages 8-14 is a perfect way to get kids off the couch and get them creating! Our full day campers focus on the basics, but are also introduced to advanced art concepts. Taught by a faculty with over three decades of teaching experience, we stive to provide a safe, comfortable, arts-learning environment where our campers can truly enjoy art and the art-making process. Each camp ends with an exhibition of works highlighting lessons and projects - and friends and family of campers are invited to attend! A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO DRAWING THE ANIMAL WORLD WITH KAREN CUMMINGS No matter what your age or skill level, the ability to draw is the foundation of many art mediums as well as a finished art form in its own rite. The key to drawing is observation, and instructor Karen Cummings will teach you how to capture the physicality and personality of animals using basic, straight forward techniques that you can use to build upon in every aspect of your practice. PAINTING FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOR WITH TOM RYAN Learn the secrets of painting flowers in watercolor with emphasis on composition, color, values, edges, and variety. saratoga arts education policies & registration information Students wishing to register for a class or workshop can do so through our website, saratoga-arts.org/education, stopping by The Arts Center during regular business hours, mailing a registration form in to 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs 12866, or by calling 518.584.4132. Payment for classes and workshops is due to Saratoga Arts at the time of registration. Payment, in full, must be made before the first meeting of class. Checks should be made out to Saratoga Arts. Students wishing to cancel a scheduled class or workshop must do so in writing, either by mail or by e-mailing kmorse@saratogaarts.org. This will allow for proper processing and proof of cancellation. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Registration is required for all classes and workshops unless otherwise specified. Our cancellation schedule is as follows: Students who cancel one week or more before the start of a scheduled class will receive a refund of their tuition minus a $15 cancellation fee. Students who cancel less than one week before the start of a scheduled class will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given if a class is cancelled by an individual the day a class or workshop starts or after the first scheduled class. There will be a $20.00 charge for all returned checks. The Arts Center is not responsible for classes missed due to illness or other commitments of students. Saratoga Arts reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Students who do not wish to transfer will receive a full credit or refund of their class tuition. If Saratoga Arts must cancel a class because it has not met minimum enrollment requirements, Saratoga Arts staff will contact registered students 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled start of the class or workshop. Students wishing to know the status of a class before then may contact Saratoga Arts via e-mail or phone. Winter Weather Policy: Saratoga Arts follows the cancellation schedule of Saratoga Springs School District during snow days and inclement weather. Explore traditional monotype & monoprint printmaking techniques in this fun & informative course while focusing on chine-colle, drypoint, reduction relief printing, and layering of colors.
