This exciting workshop with a nationally-known instructor will emphasize ways to achieve strong composition, bold color and dramatic light effects in your landscapes. Use a variety of underpainting and overpainting techniques, as demonstrated and discussed by Robert, to embolden and excite your paintings, adding conceptual design planning. With an emphasis on organizing and simplifying color value, we'll learn to dramatize light effect, and use both saturated and desaturated color for stunning results. Instruction will be based on painting in general and how to build a strong design in breathtaking color. Work from your photos. Known for his great demos and tips, clear instruction on color and light, and helpful techniques, Robert will also lead the class through instructive exercises. Learn to capture the beauty of impressionism in plein air painting. Emphasis will be on loosening your style, brushwork, capturing light, color and the emotional moment while understanding the changing nature of working in the field. Concept, composition, value, color and edges will be explored. Held in Fort Hardy Park in Schuylerville, plenty of one on one attention as well demonstrations will be provided. Sunday’s workshop will be held from 1pm - 7pm in order to take advantage of the beautiful afternoon light summer provides! This class is designed as a follow up to "Capturing the Moment in Light & Color" Workshop, however the indoor workshop is not a prerequisite for the plein air workshop. Oil is the preferred medium for students, but acrylic and pastel are also welcome. This workshop is ideal for ages 18 to adults of intermediate to advanced skill levels. The perfect class for those just starting out with pastels or looking for a refresher after some time away, artist and instructor Carolyn Justice will teach you the basic concepts of pastel while exploring the wide range of possibilities that this medium has to offer. The emphasis of this course will be on experimenting with a variety of papers, use of color and becoming comfortable with the medium. A continuation of Pastel for Beginners, in this class students will learn to interpret more complex subjects, explore contemporary directions in drawing, and continue to develop a mastery of technique, with more emphasis on originality and the development of a personal style. Grab a pen, some ink, and a sheet of paper and you’re ready to create artwork! While pen and ink is one of the most portable, convenient, and cost efficient art processes, it can also be one of the most intimidating - until now, anyway! Centering on the use of pen, quill, and brush on paper using simple values to create your images this class will also explore processes of development with emphasis on line and shape development through hatching and wash. Using layers and underdrawings with washes will be demonstrated, as well as the effect of paper choice on the finished product. Open to all levels.

Successful portraits achieve not just a likeness, but create depth and capture the personality and emotion of the human face. Working with a model, this workshop will start with an oil painting demo in the morning and will allow participants to work with one-on-one instructor guidance in the afternoon. All mediums and all skill levels welcome. Registration includes model fee. Oil painters, please bring: oil paints - at least a red, a blue, a yellow and a white, a 11”x14” or larger canvas or panel, a mix of brushes (the larger the better), odorless mineral spirits or other oil painting medium (no turpentine), a palette, and palette knife; pastelists, please bring assorted pastels, multiple sheets of colored, textured paper, a kneaded eraser, and masking tape. If you are working in a different medium bring what materials you are comfortable working with.
Capture the quality of light and vibrance of the outdoors in landscape painting in both transparent and opaque mediums using acrylic, watercolor, and gouache. This class will cover the basic elements of design and composition inherent in a variety of different landscapes, as well the basic rules for color mixing and techniques for applying paint and preparing the paper. In this 4 week class artist and instructor Tom O’Brien can help you learn how to capture reflection and transparency with an understanding of values and comparative shapes, equally effective in black and white. Open to all levels and mediums, this class will help you bring your work to the next level!
No matter what your medium of choice, drawing is an essential tool for all artists. This fun and informative class is a drawing free for all specifically designed for artists of all levels! Wide-open with plenty of demonstrations, lessons in the fundamentals of drawing and drawing techniques, as well as gentle critiques. Students should bring a 9" x12" heavy bond drawing pad, 12" x18" charcoal pad, 4b-4h pencil set, hard and medium vine charcoal, a kneaded eraser, a white plastic eraser, a knife, s ruler, sharpeners, a 12-18" thin rod (knitting needles work well), a sandpaper block, and a smudger.

Capture the quick moments and celebrate the day to day life of your hometown by learning one of the most important practices for all artists: sketching. A fun, easy, and wonderful way to keep records of travel or ideas for future paintings, Carolyn Justice will work with you in some of Saratoga’s most beautiful spots, such as Yaddo, Saratoga State Park, and downtown this spring. This class is for all levels and no drawing or painting experience is required. Please bring a small sketchbook, fine tip marker, and folding chair to each class. A travel watercolor set is optional. The first class will meet at The Arts Center where students will enjoy sketching the architectural and landscape elements of Congress Park. Students will receive a schedule of meeting places at the first class.

Pastel is a wonderful medium for paintings animals. Learn to incorporate animals in the landscaper or just capture a likeness of your favorite animal. Drawing with accuracy and expression will be emphasized in this two day workshop as well as rendering fur and and form with interesting color. Please bring several photographs of your favorite pet or animal! Students should bring assorted soft pastels, multiple sheets of colored, textured paper, a kneaded eraser, several sticks of charcoal, and masking tape. Discover the art of charcoal! Few other mediums offer the rich, amendable blacks that are achieved with charcoal, and through the great variety in the material, a broad range of values is able to be achieved. This class will teach several application processes of vine and compressed charcoals paired with several different paper types. All levels are welcome in this intriguing and informative course!
Discover in this workshop that the basic principles used in creating a 3D portrait are not so different than drawing one in 2D. Using clay to create the volume of the head, neck and shoulders with correctly placed features will produce an exhilarating portrait bust. The principles learned in this class will also help you improve your work in other mediums. All materials for this workshop will be provided, but students are welcome to bring additional sculpting tools. Registration fee includes sculpting medium and model fee. For students of all levels.

All the world is a stage, and our full day theater camp celebrates every part of it! Campers will play acting and improv games in a fun and supportive environment as they work toward the performance of their play in our very own Dee Sarno Theater for family and friends on the last day of camp! This summer Saratoga Arts campers will celebrate art in all of its forms! Art doesn’t have to be an untouchable painting in a museum or piece of sculpture behind a velvet rope - art is all around us! Campers will spend their days being inspired by everything from famous artists from around the world to art we see in our every day lives. As a part of their portfolios for the week, campers will be producing a 10” x 10” painting which will hang as part of our second annual 10” x 10” = 100 exhibition in our main gallery for the months of July and August. Artists participating in weeks 1-8* will have their 10” x 10” painting added to the exhibition at the end of their week. (*Please note that due to our exhibition schedule week 9 & 10 camper’s 10x10 pieces will not be included in the exhibition.) All of our artists are also invited to a reception on Friday, August 26 from 4pm - 7pm where they can show their work to family and friends and pick up their 10x10’s to take home!

All the world is a stage, and our full day theater camp celebrates every part of it! Campers will learn about and experience the collaborative nature of theater, exploring the many art forms required to bring a play to life as they work toward the performance of their play in our very own Dee Sarno Theater on the last day of camp!
A perfect camp option for teens and tweens who enjoy art and art-making and thrive in an informal environment where they can work at their own pace and shape lessons based on their own aesthetic. Projects will be multi-day, multi- lesson projects and will encourage students to re- imagine artwork by developing and refining their own artistic styles. This program is only available for the two weeks listed. Children between 12 -14 are welcome to participate in any week/session of our Arts Center Children’s Theater Program or our Camp Creativity programs, as well.

Page Turners Camp in partnership with Northshire Bookstore Saratoga Arts and Northshire Bookstore are excited to offer a unique summer camp experience for children who love to read, write and talk about books! At the start of the summer, each registered child will receive a box of five carefully selected books, and then each day of camp will explore one of those books in depth, including talking with authors either in person or via skype! Students will write, read, discuss, re-enact, play book-inspired games and more while they learn about some of the best of today’s children’s literature. Registration for this camp closes on June 1, 2016 *Registration fee includes a “Page Turners Book Box” of 5 books worth over $80 that will used during camp & will arrive in the mail in June from Northshire Bookstore!

Celebrating the community and community arts, participation in this exhibition is open to everyone - new artists, veteran artists, young and old artists, artists who are showing their work for the first time and artists who have been showing their work for years. ARTS BUSINESS WORKSHOP

Don’t miss this Incredible two-day professional development workshop! The Art Business Workshop for the Entrepreneurial Artist is suitable for artists and craftspeople in all mediums who want to grow their small businesses. Led by Wendy Rosen and Carolyn Edlund of The Arts Business Institute, topics such as creating an effective website, art licensing, building gallery relationships, pricing for profit, and marketing and branding will be covered. ANNUAL MEMBERS’ SHOW
Whether a seasoned professional or curious student, all current Saratoga Arts’ members are invited to take part in this wonderful exhibition. Over five thousand people visit the Arts Center Gallery between November and December to enjoy this show highlighting the wealth of artistic talent our region has to offer. With over 150 artists exhibiting artworks ranging from painting, drawing and printmaking to sculpture, functional fine art and photography, our Annual Members’ show promises to be a real treat! We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 Community Arts Grants for organizations and individual artists in Fulton, Montgomery, and Saratoga Counties. Thirty-four grants totaling $104,945 have been awarded to support community-based arts events taking place in 2016. Please join us to recognize and meet the awardees! All Are Welcome! EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES SUMMER CAMP FACULTY
Summer camp faculty must be certified to teach in NYS (or currently be active on the BOCES substitute teacher registry), have a passion for the arts and proven experience working with children. Summer camp faculty will be required to develop and implement, age- appropriate, arts-based, lessons (based on the week’s theme) and work with Saratoga Arts staff and summer camp assistants to ensure the safety and well-being of our summer camp participants. Hours for our summer camp faculty vary, the schedule is flexible and based on a teacher’s availability. Saratoga Arts is seeking THREE Summer Camp Assistants for our annual summer arts camp for children ages 5-15. Camp Assistants must be available for the full length of the program as required by the position (see below) and have experience working with children. PLEASE READ - POLICIES & REGISTRATION CANCELLATION POLICY - PLEASE READ - Students wishing to cancel a scheduled class or workshop must do so in writing, either by mail or by emailing kmorse@saratoga-arts.org. This will allow for proper processing and proof of cancellation. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Students who have not yet paid for their scheduled class or workshop, will be billed accordingly. Our cancellation schedule is as follows:
Saratoga Arts Winter 2016 Classes & Workshops Registration is required for all classes and workshops unless otherwise specified. Please register for classes at least one week prior to the start of the class / workshop you wish to attend. Early registration allows us to plan appropriately & avoid last minute cancellations.
Students who cancel one week or more before the start of a scheduled class will receive a refund of their tuition minus a $15 cancellation fee. | Students who cancel less than one week before the start of a scheduled class will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given if a class is cancelled by an individual the day a class or workshop starts or after the first scheduled class. There will be a $20.00 charge for all returned checks. The Arts Center is not responsible for classes missed due to
illness or other commitments of students. Payment for classes and workshops is due to Saratoga Arts at the time of registration. Payment, in full, must be made before the first meeting of class. Checks should be made out to Saratoga Arts.
Saratoga Arts reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Students who do not wish to transfer will receive a full credit or refund of their class tuition. The Arts Center also cancels classes on Saratoga Springs City Schools snow days. Make up classes will be arranged at the discretion of the teacher.
When Saratoga Arts must cancel a class because it has not met minimum enrollment requirements, Saratoga Arts staff will contact registered students 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled start of the class or workshop. Students wishing to know the status of a class before then, may contact Saratoga Arts.
CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATION - confirmation of registration will be done via email or phone if no email is available. The confirmation will direct you to supply lists and/or anything else you may need to know about a class. At any time, registered students may call Saratoga Arts / (518) 584-4132 ext 201 / to inquire about the status of a class and/or workshop registration. POLICY FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER - It is the policy of Saratoga Arts to cancel classes and workshops when the Saratoga Springs City School District cancels due to inclement weather. If school is cancelled for the day, all of our classes scheduled for that day are also cancelled. If school is not cancelled, but after school activities are, our evening classes and will be cancelled. You can find updates about inclement weather cancellations on all major regional radio and television stations and websites, at our website www.saratoga-arts.org/ education or by calling 584-4132 ext 202. All make up classes are at the discretion of Saratoga Arts and Saratoga Arts faculty.

Join Saratoga Arts' faculty artists James D’Andrea, Carolyn Justice, Tom O’Brien, Corey Pitkin, and Takeyce Walter for mini art lessons, and lots of great conversation while enjoying the Faculty Exhibition in The Arts Center Gallery. Staff will also be on hand to give tours of classrooms and creating spaces. Learn, hands-on, about what makes Saratoga Arts education program unique. This event is FREE and everybody is welcome.
