SPRINGTIME FARMSCAPES IN PASTEL With Robert CARSTEN, PSA-mp, IAPS-mc True to the season, and working from photos of this time of year, this workshop will concentrate on imbuing a sense of atmosphere and spring into our landscapes. Barns or other farm buildings add interest, but the real subject will be the “feel” of spring. We’ll conduct small studies and then concentrate on a larger pastel painting, with demonstration, critique, and lots of painting time. Some reference photos will be provided but please bring some as well. All levels welcome. A suggested supply list can be found on our website. USING STUDIES TO CAPTURE LIGHT & COLOR with ann Larsen, Signature member of american impressionist society The weather doesn’t always cooperate when you’re painting in plein air, and capturing the light and color that draws you to a particular landscape can be difficult once you’re back in the studio. Using your plein air color studies, sketches, and/or photographic references Ann Larsen can teach you how to create stunning studio paintings. Emphasis will be on loosening your style, brushwork, capturing light, color, and the emotional moment while understanding how to work from reference materials. Concept, composition, value, color, and edges will be explored. One-on-one attention and demonstrations will be provided. Painting Flowers in watercolor With Robert J. O’Brien Learning how to successfully capture the delicacy of petals as well as the gentle play of light and shadow of your favorite blossom can be frustrating, but watercolorist Robert J. O’Brien can teach you tricks and techniques to help you along. Students will learn basic floral painting techniques, with an emphasis on values and composition. Layering and blending color into soft edges will also be taught, with a gentle critique and discussion at the end of the session. The course will focus on painting from close-up photo references of flowers in an artistic setting and is a wonderful opportunity for students of all levels to bring their watercolor practice to a new level. Learn the fundamentals of creating dynamic design and captivating composition in your paintings. Artist and instructor Takeyce Walter will teach you techniques and tools to reveal striking and interesting design to help lead the viewer through, and keep them coming back to your painting. PAINTING ON THE SMALL SCALE WITH TAKEYCE WALTER

Calling all artists: Get ready for our annual 10x10 exhibition with Takeyce Walter! This relaxed, fun workshop focuses on working on a small scale while making sure your pieces make a big impact. Concentrating on images, color, and a variety of painting techniques, students will complete a small scale painting in either pastel or oils with lots of one-on-one help from artist Takeyce Walter. Creating a successful portrait does not mean simply portraying a likeness of your subject, but creating depth and capturing the personality and emotion of the human face. Working with a model, this workshop begins with an oil painting demonstration by artist and instructor Corey Pitkin (winner of the Hyde Collection’s 2016 “Master of Portraits” Contest) in the morning and allows participants to work with one-on-one guidance in the afternoon. UNDERSTANDING VALUES WITH TAKEYCE WALTER

There’s an adage in painting: “Value does all the work and color gets all the glory.” Without a strong foundation, and understanding of values, your paintings can appear flat, albeit colorful. Tonal values add volume, dimension, and depth to our artwork. In this workshop, we will focus on how to identify values, tones, and shades in our paintings. Takeyce will provide demonstrations, critiques, exercises, and assignments to help you grow your skills. EXPLORING ABSTRACT REALISM WITH TOM O’BRIEN

From portraits to landscape to still life, all realistic art contains some abstraction. Learn to loosen your approach to your artwork and explore the abstract and how it can be incorporated in realism, by simply organizing the composition, shapes of colors and values on the way to hyper realistic painting or a stylized picture as an end in itself. Draw or paint a live model in full period costume during this exciting workshop! Instruction will be provided on lighting, staging, and historical accuracy as well as the use of photography and basic Photoshop techniques used to compose a scene. Paint along with the instructor’s guidance to create a historically inspired portrait. Open to all media and students with a basic understanding of portraiture. PHOTOGRAPHING ARTWORK: TOOLS FOR THE ARTIST WITH HARRY WIRTZ Properly and accurately documenting your artwork is a necessary skill for artists of all levels. Learn to use your digital camera to make quality photographs for documentation, press releases, jury submissions, and print editions of your work. This evening workshop will cover setting up artwork for photography, low cost lighting options, basic camera adjustments, editing the image for accuracy, and more. A demonstration with artwork and affordable lighting will be provided. Bring your digital camera, manual, and lots of questions! saratoga arts education policies & registration information Students wishing to register for a class or workshop can do so through our website, saratoga-arts.org/education, stopping by The Arts Center during regular business hours, or by calling 518.584.4132. Payment for classes and workshops is due to Saratoga Arts at the time of registration. Payment, in full, must be made before the first meeting of class. Checks should be made out to Saratoga Arts. Students wishing to cancel a scheduled class or workshop must do so in writing, either by mail or by e-mailing kmorse@saratoga-arts.org. This will allow for proper processing and proof of cancellation. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Registration is required for all classes and workshops unless otherwise specified. Our cancellation schedule is as follows: Students who cancel one week or more before the start of a scheduled class will receive a refund of their tuition minus a $15 cancellation fee. Students who cancel less than one week before the start of a scheduled class will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given if a class is cancelled by an individual the day a class or workshop starts or after the first scheduled class. There will be a $20.00 charge for all returned checks. The Arts Center is not responsible for classes missed due to illness or other commitments of students. Saratoga Arts reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Students who do not wish to transfer will receive a full credit or refund of their class tuition. If Saratoga Arts must cancel a class because it has not met minimum enrollment requirements, Saratoga Arts staff will contact registered students 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled start of the class or workshop. This workshop will focus on the elements of good composition, values, and the importance of light in your painting through exercises and instruction in the morning. PASTEL FOR BEGINNERS WITH CAROLYN JUSTICE Painting with pastel is a fun way to begin your exploration of the world of art, with lots of color, texture, and no-pressure spontaneity! Learn the basic concepts of pastel while exploring the wide range of possibilities that this medium has to offer by experimenting with papers, use of color, and becoming comfortable with the medium. For those who are new to drawing or simply interested in improving their practice, Beginner - Intermediate Drawing will give you the tools to begin with and those to build upon. Designed to help students develop ideas and define their personal style while building upon the skills they already possess, students will have the opportunity to discuss the philosophy behind the process of drawing as well as spend each session on drawings of their own with one-on-one help and gentle critiques. Studies have found that by learning to use your non-dominant hand you stimulate not only your brain, but your creative process as well! SILVERSMITHING & METAL FABRICATION WITH MATT BALINT Learn the basic techniques of silversmithing and create a piece of original jewelry or sculpture in sterling or fine silver. THEATER CAMP

Our full-day school break camp for children ages 8-14 is a perfect way to get kids off the couch and get them creating! Our full day campers focus on the basics, but are also introduced to advanced art concepts. Each camp ends with an exhibition of works highlighting lessons and projects - and friends and family of campers are invited to attend! Camp size is limited to 14 students.

This half-day camp for younger artists allows campers to focus on the basics of art making while studying the styles and techniques of famous artists! Campers will complete 4-6 masterpieces of their very own, which they can show off to friends and family at the exhibition at the end of the week. Camp size is limited to 12 students. For ages 5 - 7.

All the world is a stage, and our full day theater camp celebrates every part of it! Together they will learn the basics of character development, stage directions and the basics of set and costume design as they work toward the performance of their play in our very own Dee Sarno Theater for family and friends at the end of the week. Camp size is limited to 14 students. For ages 6 - 14.
