PAINTING The Winter Landscape In Watercolor

With Robert O’Brien

Watercolor artist Robert O’Brien AWS NWS will teach this inspiring one-day workshop on the magnificent New England countryside in winter. Light, shadow, value and composition will be emphasized. Robert will begin with a demonstration, explaining each step of the process. Students will then paint with the Robert providing hands on, one-on-one assistance. There will be a critique given at the end of class. Students are encouraged to provide their own reference photos, though Robert will have many on hand. New! Chinese Brush Painting Workshop

with Linda Schultz

Nature is the heart of Chinese Brush painting. It is intended to be a meditative and spontaneous art form, capturing the essence of an image or idea with very little attention to precise details. In this workshop you will learn the basics using the “Four Treasures” - the brush, ink stick, ink stone, and paper - to create a beautiful traditional paintings of one of the four gentlemen: Bamboo. Continual demonstrations and individual attention will be provided throughout this unique two-day workshop. Students should bring sumi se ink, a flower palette, felt, and newsprint. Details regarding supplies can be found on our website. A $20 supply fee will also be due to the instructor on Saturday for a brush and rice paper. Linda Schultz is a retired art educator. She holds an MS in Art Education and a Certificate of Completion from the prestigious Art Farm Gallery for Studies in Chinese Brush Painting, where she studied with Professor I-Hsuing Ju. She further studied Chinese Brush painting with master painters in the city of Jan Ying, China.

Use classic techniques and materials to produce drawings in the Renaissance tradition. Artist and instructor Katherine Patterson will cover topics including drapery studies, anatomical studies, and use of dark and light conte crayon on toned paper. Watercolor is a wonderful medium to capture water-perhaps the most varied of landscape elements. Expand your skills in painting water in various forms including calm water, running water, and waterfalls. A special focus will be placed on reflections and their importance to the painting, along with an emphasis composition, color, values, edges, mood, and variety. Participants will work on their own painting by using their own photos for reference with one-on-one advice from artist and instructor Tom Ryan. See website for suggested supply list. If you have ever wanted to try oil painting, or haven’t been painting for some time and want to pick up your brushes again this is the workshop for you! Learn how to compose a painting, choose and mix colors, and experiment with a variety of different brushwork and application techniques. Students will have the opportunity to work from a still life for this class as well as landscapes from reference photos provided. PAsTeL For beGINNers WITh cAroLYN JusTIce Painting with pastel is a fun way to begin your exploration of the world of art, with lots of color, texture, and no-pressure spontaneity! Learn the basic concepts of pastel while exploring the wide range of possibilities that this medium has to offer by experimenting with papers, use of color, and becoming comfortable with the medium. EXPLORING ABSTRACT REALISM WITH TOM O’BRIEN

From portraits to landscape to still life, all realistic art contains some abstraction. Learn to loosen your approach to your artwork and explore the abstract and how it can be incorporated in realism, by simply organizing the composition, shapes of colors and values on the way to hyper realistic painting or a stylized picture as an end in itself. Draw or paint a live model in full period costume during this exciting workshop! Instruction will be provided on lighting, staging, and historical accuracy as well as the use of photography and basic Photoshop techniques used to compose a scene. The ArT oF Fused GLAss WITh PATrIce MAsTrIANNI Explore the art of fused glass! Patrice Mastrianni presents the science of fusing glass, designing with opaque and translucent colors and basic glass cutting techniques in this fun workshop for all levels. Participants will make one 4” sun catcher, coaster, a few ornaments, or chimes. All tools provided. PhoToGrAPhING ArTWork WITh hArrY WIrTz This workshop will teach you to use your digital camera to make quality photographs for documentation, press releases, jury submissions, and print editions of your work. Topics will include setting up artwork for photography, low cost lighting options, basic camera adjustments, editing the image for accuracy, and more. Bring a camera and user manual; be familiar with its operation. “Point and shoot” and cell phone cameras can be made to work with some effort, but a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera is best. The Open Studio sessions are great practice for any artist interested in working from a live model and run continuously throughout the year every Monday evening (excluding holidays). policies & registration information

Registration is required for all classes and workshops unless otherwise specified. Please register for classes at least one week prior to the start of the class / workshop you wish to attend. Early registration allows us to plan appropriately & avoid last minute cancellations.

CANCELLATION POLICY - please read - Students wishing to cancel a scheduled class or workshop must do so in writing, either by mail or by emailing kmorse@saratoga-arts.org. This will allow for proper processing and proof of cancellation. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Students who have not yet paid for their scheduled class or workshop, will be billed accordingly. Our cancellation schedule is as follows:

Payment for classes and workshops is due to Saratoga Arts at the time of registration. Payment, in full, must be made before the first meeting of class. Checks should be made out to Saratoga Arts.

No refunds will be given if a class is cancelled by an individual the day a class or workshop starts or after the first scheduled class. There will be a $20.00 charge for all returned checks. The Arts Center is not responsible for classes missed due to illness or other commitments of students.

Saratoga Arts reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Students who do not wish to transfer will receive a full credit or refund of their class tuition. To register visit www. saratoga-arts.org or call 518-584-4132 today!

Students who cancel one week or more before the start of a scheduled class will receive a refund of their tuition minus a $15 cancellation fee. Students who cancel less than one week before the start of a scheduled class will receive a 50% refund.

When Saratoga Arts must cancel a class because it has not met minimum enrollment requirements, Saratoga Arts staff will contact registered students 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled start of the class or workshop. Students wishing to know the status of a class before then may contact Saratoga Arts.

POLICY FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER- It is the policy of Saratoga Arts to cancel classes and

workshops when the Saratoga Springs City School District cancels due to inclement weather. If school is cancelled for the day, all of our classes scheduled for that day are also cancelled. If school is not cancelled, but after school activities are, our evening classes and will be cancelled. cAMP creATIVITY Our full-day school break camp for children ages 8-14 is a perfect way to get kids off the couch and get them creating! Our full day campers focus on the basics, but are also introduced to advanced art concepts. Each camp ends with an exhibition of works highlighting lessons and projects - and friends and family of campers are invited to attend! A typical day of camp includes 4 art-making sessions with our NYS or BOCES registered art teachers, a break for lunch, and two snack breaks each day. Camp size is limited to 14 students. This half-day camp for younger artists allows campers to focus on the basics of art making while studying the styles and techniques of famous artists! Campers will complete 4-6 masterpieces of their very own, which they can show off to friends and family at their very own exhibition at the end of the week. TheATer cAMP All the world is a stage, and our full day theater camp celebrates every part of it! Campers will learn about and experience the collaborative nature of theater, exploring all the art forms required to bring a play to life. At the beginning of summer each registered child will receive a box of carefully selected books, and then each day of camp they will explore one of those books in depth, including talking with the authors either in person or via Skype! Students will write, read, discuss, re-enact, play book-inspired games and more while learning abut some of the best of today’s children’s literature. *Registration fee includes a “Page Turners Book Box” of 5 books worth over $80 that will be used during camp and will arrive in the mail in June from Northshire!*
