o say that 2020 has been a challenging year would be an understatement— and for nonprofit organizations like the Saratoga Automobile Museum, even more so. While I could sit here and recount the many trials and tribulations that we faced from the early days of the pandemic to July 6, when we were finally able to reopen to the public, I won’t. However, the Museum has borrowed a page from its own playbook. As you know, our wonderful exhibitions—and the award-winning automobiles included in them—tell stories of exceptional men and women that have stared down adversity and come out victorious. That’s been our story these past few months. In this strangest of years, we also felt that it was essential for the Museum to return to at least some semblance of normalcy—even with all of the COVID-19 restrictions and new health/safety protocols in place. That’s why you’re holding this Auction Catalog right now. I’m thrilled that the Museum will be hosting its fourth annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction on Saturday, September 19, in the beautiful Saratoga Spa State Park. First and foremost, I’d like to assure all of the consignors, bidders, volunteers, and staff that the Museum will be conducting its September 19th auction in the safest possible manner, and we’ll be following all of New York State’s and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest health and safety guidelines. Your safety is our top concern. (For all of the most up-to-date COVID-19 guidelines, please visit saratogamotorcarauctions.org/covid-procedures.) All pandemics aside, the lineup of cars, trucks, automobilia and more that we’ve put together for this year’s auction is truly enviable. We’ve landed an historic IMSA Corvette, whose rubber met the road (or, rather, track) at Daytona in the 1970s; an ultra-rare 1970 Ford Mustang 429 Boss (thanks to Museum board member Ken Salamone); and the iconic 1958 Plymouth Fury featured in the horror movie Christine. And although we didn’t spend our life savings turning a van into a dog, I dare say we barked up the right tree by landing the one and only “Mutts Cutts” van from the ’94 cult-classic comedy Dumb and Dumber (sadly, it’s not for sale but it’s awfully fetching and can be viewed in the Museum for a limited time). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This year’s Saratoga Motorcar Auction would not have happened without the steadfast support of the Saratoga Spa State Park, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, Discover Saratoga and the Saratoga City Center. For that, we can’t thank you enough. And I’d also like to personally thank the Chairman of our Board of Trustees, Kevin Biebel, for keeping the ship on an even keel, even during the most tumultuous of times; Treasurer Gary Brown, for spending countless hours advising and working closely with the Museum staff in advance of the auction; David Collins/funny remark, Dow Smith, for donating his remarkable photography skills and detailed vehicle descriptions to the auction website (and Catalog); the staff at Saratoga Living, for its continued excellence in producing our print products, including this one; and especially, Auction Director Bill Windham, Auction Client Liaison Leah Finn, Tom Campbell, Ron Hedger, the Museum staff and our many dedicated volunteers. You should all be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Now, without further ado…let the bidding begin!

Award winning customer satisfaction and loyalty from a long term fully Porsche Certified team ready to provide the experience you have come to expect from the brand that all others aspire to be.
’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the consignors and bidders for their trust and participation in the 2020 Saratoga Motorcar Auction. Without you, this auction would not be taking place on September 19. Needless to say, it has been a real challenge to present the event, given the many COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions the Museum has had to put in place to ensure the safety of everyone involved. It is purely through the combined efforts of the Museum’s Executive Director, Carly Connors; the Board of Trustees of the Saratoga Auto Museum; and the auction staff that the event is taking place. And finally, a huge thank you goes to all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make sure the auction goes off without a hitch. They are the true heroes of the event, and without their participation, there would be no fourth annual Saratoga Motorcar Auction.

The Saratoga Automobile Museum was chartered in 1999 and officially opened to the public in June 2002. The Museum’s mission is to preserve, interpret and exhibit automobiles and automotive artifacts. We celebrate the automobile and educate the general public, students and enthusiasts on the role of the automobile in New York State and the wider world. In addition to technical and design aspects, our educational focus is on the past, present and future social and economic impacts of the automobile. In keeping with the Museum’s exhibits and educational programs, including the Distracted Driving Safety Initiative and various automobile restoration programs for local youth, the Museum also organizes the Saratoga Motorcar Auction, a nationally acclaimed vintage and collector car auction held each September. The Auction is the Museum’s largest annual fundraising effort. The Museum is located within the 2,500acre Saratoga Spa State Park, in the heart of historic Saratoga Springs, New York, world famous for its legendary Thoroughbred racetrack. The Museum’s facility is the fully restored and renovated New York State Bottling Plant, a beautiful neoclassical structure completed in 1935. The Museum sits adjacent to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the renowned Hall of Springs event facility. It is also within walking distance to the National Museum of Dance, the Spa Little Theatre and the Gideon Putnam Hotel. The Museum is chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York Department of Education as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution.

Halloween came early this year. The Saratoga Motorcar Auction has landed a classic car that is sure to scare up some high bids: a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury hardtop featured in the classic horror film Christine. The ’58 Plymouth Fury, which has an estimated hammer price of $200,000–$300,000, according to auction director Bill Windham, is one of just 16 of these screen-used puppies left on Earth, owing its survival to being the car in the fleet used for close-ups (rather than being crashed or set on fire). Throughout the years, it has enjoyed much time in the limelight, promoting the movie and gaining quite a bit of momentum on the auction market, given its primo pop cultural relevance. Case in point: Christine was directed by John Carpenter, who basically invented the modern-era slasher flick (see: his ’78 monsterpiece, Halloween), and its screenplay was based on the same-named bestseller from horror mastermind Stephen King. It’s also one of the best adaptations of a King novel on the silver screen, as well as a favorite among car enthusiasts (Maximum Overdrive, not so much). Despite the Plymouth’s onscreen antics—Christine is an autonomous killer car with a fiery jealousy streak—the film is a spot-on metaphor for the crazy-but-it-works love affair the car enthusiast community has for its prized, gas-powered possessions. And clearly, its owners enjoyed it throughout the years: This Christine car has 79,510 miles on its odometer. Dependable and a showstopper.

hen you pull up Ken Salamone’s driveway in Diamond Point on Lake George, the closed garage doors at the end of it look pretty unassuming. In fact, from the outside, it appears to be your ordinary two-car garage, the type that might be connected to a reasonably sized house. On the other side of those nondescript doors, however, is something that can only be described as having been stripped from a Bruce Springsteen song. There’s a vintage Hemi up on a car lift; various Ducatis and an Aprilia kickstanded and waiting for a rev-up; two wall-mounted electric guitars, a full drum kit, keyboard and amplifiers in the back corner; and the star of the show, a Grabber Blue 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429, with a black interior, which Salamone is putting on the block at this year’s Saratoga Motorcar Auction. (By the way, that’s only the top floor of the garage, which can house up to five cars total; a bottom level reveals a number of other high-end metallic treasures stacked snugly into a space that holds up to 13 additional cars.) A lifelong car enthusiast and amateur mechanic, Salamone is a trustee at the Museum and will be offering up his rare (only 499 were ever built) Mustang as one of the key lots in the September auction (see page 37). It could realize as much as $300,000– $350,000 when the hammer falls, per the Auto Museum’s Auction Director, Bill Windham. Salamone is only its fourth owner; he was preceded by NASCAR driver Bill Elliott, construction mogul Eddie Vannoy and finally, Dana Mecum, the famed car auction founder, whom he bought it from in 2011. “The latest on the registry is that there are 11 Grabber Blues known to exist with a black interior,” he says of the coveted muscle car. “That was one of the buying points for me.” Salamone even has the car’s original, nonfunctioning battery in the trunk—something that collectors have offered him $10,000 for alone. That’s because Kar-Kraft, the firm that completed all Boss 429s for Ford, built the car to homologate its new 429 hemi-type combustion chamber engine for NASCAR. This rare beauty is fully restored and fully documented by original build sheets, Marti Report and original bill of sale from its first owner.

eorge N. Pierce, founder of the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company of Buffalo, NY, manufactured everything from bicycles and bird cages to refrigerators and motorcycles between 1901 and 1938. But Pierce was best known, of course, for his automobiles. By 1908, Pierce’s Great Arrow sixes were equal in desirability to anything sold on either side of the Atlantic. But this was long before autos and flashiness went hand in hand; Pierce cars were conservative, like the wealthy clientele they served. Most car enthusiasts argue that the company’s finest hour was the three-year span from 1910 to 1913, when its luxurious Model 48s and 66s were produced. The lights were gracefully (and very distinctively) faired into the front fenders—a tell-tale sign of a Pierce-Arrow automobile. More Pierce innovations included extensive use of aluminum, including cast alloy bodies; hydraulic tappets; power brakes; and, as early as 1907, a column shift. Curiously, Pierce-Arrow cars retained right-hand drive until 1920, long after most makes had abandoned this practice. In 1928, financial difficulties ensued due to slowing sales and a preponderance of model offerings, so that year, Pierce-Arrow merged with Studebaker. Sales increased in the short term, but despite available custom bodywork by America’s finest coachbuilders and a powerful V12 engine option, the Great Depression further took its toll on sales and units dwindled. Not even 1909 Paterson Model 1910 Maxwell AB the dramatically styled, streamlined Silver Arrow show car—just five 14 Buggy Roadster were built, at a cost of $10,000 each—could save the company. But in the 10 years following the Studebaker merger and before closing for good, Pierce-Arrow put out quite a few noteworthy vehicles, including one Model 42 Dual Cowl Phaeton that found a home in the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s East of Detroit exhibit. Riding on a 142-inch wheelbase, the Model 42 Phaeton is powered by a 132-bhp, 385-cubic-inch straight eight with a four-speed manual transmission 1930 Oldsmobile 1975 Ford Mustang II and freewheeling, that can be engaged or disengaged via a lever on F-30 Ghia the dash, along with powerful Bendix duo-servo mechanical brakes. It also features a built-in bar for the rear seat passengers. At this year’s Saratoga Motorcar Auction, the Saratoga Auto Museum’s Pierce-Arrow is headed to the auction block (see page 39), with the money from its sale going directly to the Museum. The money will help fund future exhibits, educational programming and distracted driving programs.

HISTORIC IMSA YENKO-THOMPSON CORVETTE Call it a barn find, time capsule or race-ready piece of American-produced race car history—there is no question this one-off Corvette is the most documented vintage race car offered in some time. It’s had just one owner since its purchase in 1976 from builders Jerry Thompson, a noted Corvette racer from the early 1960s, and Don Yenko, the legendary Chevrolet dealer of high-performance street cars and racecar driver. A year earlier, the car raced in the 24 Hours of Daytona, running as high as third against the likes of Peter Gregg, Brian Redma and Al Holbert in their factory Porsches and BMWs. The Corvette now stands as it rolled off the trailer in 1975, with the original bill of sale, all racing results and historical documents related to its participation in numerous IMSA-sanctioned events throughout the US, as well as photographs of the car in its racing career. In the late 1960s, Porsche and Volkswagen joined forces to replace two aging models—VW’s Karman Ghia and Porsche’s 912—with one mid-engine sports car. That car was the Porsche 914, also known as the VW Porsche 914.
In 2002, Ferrari replaced its 550 Maranello with the 575, which had bigger brake discs, a more powerful engine, improved weight distribution, improved aerodynamics and an adaptive suspension setup. The vehicle’s interior and exterior redesign was done by the Pininfarina coachbuilding firm. Two six-speed transmissions were available—a conventional manual gearbox and, for the first time on a Ferrari 12 cylinder, the “F1” automatic gearbox.

One of fewer than 500 “Boss 429” Mustangs built in 1970, this highly desirable Grabber Blue Boss is one of the rarest and most valuable muscle cars of its kind. Kar-Kraft, the firm that completed all Boss 419s for Ford, enumerated it as KK#2371. It was built to homologate their new 429 hemi-type combustion chamber engine for NASCAR. The Boss is fully restored and documented by original build sheets, Marti Report and original bill of sale from its first owner.

PLYMOUTH FURY CHRISTINE In the filming of Christine, the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name, director John Carpenter used some 16 red 1958 Plymouth Furys and other Plymouths. This Christine underwent an all-inclusive restoration and now comes to the auction block, ready to drive away to (or possess!?) her next unwitting owner. With its original red and white exterior, this Christine is powered by a small block Wedge V8 motor and has a TorqueFlite automatic transmission, featuring those memorable push buttons mounted on the dash. And as for the radio, which in the movie comes back to life as Christine’s “voice” after being destroyed? Future owners can rest easy, as it’s unlikely to be the vehicle’s original AM radio. NO RESERVE 1929
PACKARD 640 CUSTOM EIGHT Previously owned by two museums, this 1929 Packard 640 Custom Eight doesn’t just look good—it runs well, too. The convertible boasts restored wooden bows, full top and curtains, original gauges and an authentic Packard trunk. In 1929, Packard introduced its Standard Eight line, replacing the earlier Twin Six models. These sixth series Packards had long hoods, large oval-backed headlights (featured that year only) and sweeping fenders. Five basic models were offered and given an automatic cylinder oiler, which helped to prevent unnecessary wear caused by dry startups; parabolic headlamps; and chromed bright work, as well as a shock absorbing loose trunnion suspension with new Houdaille shocks. Other mechanical improvements included the relocation of the coolant temperature gauge from the radiator filler cap (Moto-Meter) to an easy-to-read gauge on the dashboard. The driver and passenger received more interior room when the shift lever was moved from the top of the transmission casing to the bell housing. This Packard hasn’t seen the light of day in decades, and it’s ready for a new owner who will display it proudly.

The year 1989 was the last that Mercedes-Benz produced its 560SL, and only 5,351 were made. The vast majority of the models were exported to Europe, making the car desirable in the US. This one-owner 560SL has just 23,931 original miles on it, and is in mint condition, having received a complete belt, hose and fluid refresh. It has a 5.6-liter V8 mated to an automatic transmission and is an outstanding example of what Mercedes referred to as “the best car in the world.”
Possibly the finest example of a Saab 95 wagon in existence, this station wagon has undergone a remarkable ground-up restoration. Owner states that is has 586 miles since that restoration. While it has its original Ford-derived four-stroke engine, it’s still front-wheel drive, making it a great car for navigating the Northeast’s sloppy winters. Under the hood, its V4 engine has been completely rebuilt, and inside the car is seating for seven, including a folding, rear-facing seat.
