FROM THE EDITOR

BRIDE OWNER/PUBLISHER Chad Beatty

Chris Vallone Bushee Editor-in-Chief Saratoga BRIDE magazine is built on the premise of showcasing this area as a world class, four-season wedding DESTINATION, so when I was invited to my “honorary” nephew’s “destination wedding” last year, to be held on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I was so excited to be able to report back what it’s like to ATTEND a DESTINATION wedding. I must say – I loved it!!

Some notes from my travels… As a guest… The concept of inviting your friends and family to HANG OUT for a few days and enjoy each other’s company is awesome! We had the most wonderful week on the beach in what most would call a luxury boutique hotel (NOT a beach-house by any means!) and although we didn’t have the conveniences of being in downtown Saratoga with everything within arm’s reach – we all had a ball! I not only met the bride’s family and the couple’s friends, we all got to know each other!

As the Editor-in-Chief of Saratoga BRIDE magazine… The importance of working with THE RIGHT PEOPLE was crystal clear. The wedding was held in the Twiddy “Event Home” rental; THE WILD HORSE (it took a 20-minute drive up the beach – 4x4s only – to get in or out of the property!) and the House Managers, Jeff and Amy Kelly, were a wonderful resource to the bride & groom (and guests)! They filled us in on how not to look like a tourist, the best place to go for fresh donuts, how to navigate the beach roads, etc. etc. - basically, everything we needed! Yes – it’s all about finding THE RIGHT PEOPLE to work with!

…and that’s where we come in!

Saratoga BRIDE prides itself on being your news source for what’s happening in the wedding industry in this area, and I’m happy to report – we have 132 pages of local talent in this issue!

Wedding Industry INSIDER NOTES, IDEAS & NEWS Brought to you by Saratoga BRIDE, Written By Megin Potter, Photo By Candidly Beth Photography

5 Wedding Vendors

under one roof

A Romantic Rhythm

At under one roof, the event specialists in the historic Grant Plaza building at 75 Woodlawn Avenue in Saratoga Springs, the five individual wedding related businesses are making it easier to put together the perfect team to get the job done.

When tensions arise while planning a wedding, it seems the most common cause is often miscommunication.

Saratoga BRIDE recently spoke with Samantha Nass, one of the wedding vendors on the benefits of working with under one roof. “We can work together for the client, preempt any problems, and maximize their time.” …Sounds like a great idea!

Without detailed communication between clients and their many vendors, a small element (like a bouquet ribbon in the wrong shade) can create cringes where smiles should be.

The renovated Victorian Mansion evokes old world elegance from the moment you walk in. It features stained glass windows, fine woodwork, a dramatic staircase, and stately original fireplaces.

To avert these issues, it helps to have a team of trusted professionals with similar approaches, who already know one another …and work together cohesively.

Gorgeous bridal dresses are presented at Something Bleu Bridal, with complimentary dresses for the bridal party from Saratoga Elegance Boutique. Will Fit U In conveniently offers alterations. There’s hairstyling, organic skin care, and relaxing massages available from Centered Wellness & Beauty. Samantha Nass Floral Design creates enchantment with her stunning flowers and linens. Finally, there’s the talented Candidly Beth Photography & Video to capture it all on your special day.

Cohesive Composition

“It’s important for all of us to see the whole picture and not just be part of a puzzle.” said Nass. This is more easily accomplished when vendors are able to collaborate. With the client in mind, the five vendors will be rolling out private VIP shopping hours with preferred vendor offers when multiple under one roof vendors are booked for the same event.

All five vendors in the Grant Plaza will be open for extended hours, from 6 – 8 p.m., on February 16, April 13, August 17, and November 24, 2017. FOLLOW UNDERONEROOF518 ON INSTAGRAM & FACEBOOK

BUILDING THE PERFECT SARATOGA WEDDING

"Welcome Gift" Written By Katie O'Malley Maloney, Photos Provided

Providing a wedding welcome gift for out of town guests is always a wonderful treat for destination weddings. It is hospitable, thoughtful and can provide a peek into the amazing city they are visiting for your big day. Guests feel special as soon as they arrive and check-in to their hotel for the weekend. Saratoga Springs has many fabulous, fun and delicious options for your welcome gift and we are excited to share how to create the perfect welcome with you!

Pick your vessel:

Here are a few options that are creative, fun and even good for the environment to place your items in. Three of the most widely used include: •

A custom reusable bag with a fun Saratoga image printed on it. It is best to not have a date, or your names printed directly on the bag since guests would be more likely to reuse if it is generic! Check out this fun option with a custom designed logo by Jenny C Designs & Ink Revival!

A structured gable box is a sturdy and unique alternative to a bag. These boxes come in various sizes and it is always a smart idea to figure out what is going into the box before you pick the size. They are a little less forgiving than a bag so make sure you know the dimension of your contents! It is fun to add a custom sticker or beautiful ribbon to these boxes.

You can keep it simple and disposable with a standard gift bag to share your goodies with your guests. A basic kraft color or a bag in the colors of your wedding with a ribbon tied off on top is a perfect, cost effective option for your bag.

Now that you have the package picked let’s see some of the quintessential Saratoga Items you can include! Start by including the “basics” and then add your Saratoga touches. Essentials include a beverage, information about the wedding weekend and visitors guide, a recovery kit with pain reliever, something sweet and something savory for guests to snack on. Saratoga Wedding Tea

18  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Saratoga Bottled Water in the iconic blue glass bottles not only look fantastic in your gift bag but are refreshing either in the flat or sparkling variety.

More helpful tips to keep in mind:

Think ahead and depending on your vessel you might want to wrap the bottles in tissue paper prior to packing up and delivering to hotels.

Make sure all your welcome bags are the same. This keeps it simple on the hotels for delivery purposes and ensures that everyone is getting the same gift.

Saratoga Kettle Corn combines the sweet and salty into one treat. A delicious and fun item straight out of the kettle on Broadway for your guests to enjoy!

Give a call to the hotels where you will deliver and confirm their “welcome gift” policy prior to delivering. All hotels vary in terms of a delivery fee, and how the gifts are delivered to your guests.

Saratoga Tea & Honey makes a yummy “Saratoga Wedding Tea” that you can pair with a jar of honey for a “warm” welcome to the Spa City.

Drop off a few extra at the hotels when leaving. We call these “problem solvers,” just in case you missed a guest or two while reviewing the room block lists.

Saratoga Sweets Candy Company creates handmade chocolates to add the perfect “sweet” you're welcome. Horse medallions or horseshoes are the perfect addition.

Hattie’s Hot Sauce adds a spicy and savory kick to your bags.

Saratoga Chips are a must have for a savory snack that was “born” in the Spa city. You can include the “original” but they have a variety of flavors in the snack-sized bag too.

So you just got engaged... NOW WHAT?!

Written By Kate Taylor Event & Wedding Coordinator

Don’t let this magical moment overwhelm you, and don’t do too much too soon. Here are some simple reminders to keep in mind when planning your wedding. First off, take the time to enjoy your engagement, enjoy your fiancé and get lost in the moment all over again. No need to get the ring and then the day after run out and put deposits down on vendors or drag your love to multiple appointments. In reality what you think you will love may be realistically out of your budget which brings me to what’s next. You are going to want to plan a sit-down with anyone who is going to be contributing to your wedding and get an understanding of how much you will have to budget for your big day. Now that you have your budget this would be a great time to seek out a Wedding Planner. Most planners offer free consultations during which time they will tell you what your budget will get you, and how much you should expect for each vendor. Be sure to ask questions during this consultation - get all the information you can. Don’t be afraid to ask for samples of work they have done or references. You’re trusting the biggest day of your life with this planner, so making sure they are qualified is not only your right, but your responsibility.

Now on to the fun stuff… venue selection!

This needs to be done before you book any other vendor or shop for the dress. Your venue will tie your entire wedding theme together, so don’t jump the gun just yet. During your venue meeting find out the bottom line pricing regarding any fees, taxes, or gratuities that may be added to your overall bill. Nothing is more frustrating to couples than expecting to pay a certain amount and getting a bill for thousands higher because of these hidden fees. If you don’t like something, ask if it can be swapped out for a different design. Customize your wedding to be yours and not like the books they show you of past weddings. After the venue is booked, take that time to start browsing for dresses. Make sure your dress compliments the overall look of your wedding, the season and the time-of-day for the ceremony.

What’s next…?

Photography, Entertainment, Beauty and Floral can all be booked next. It used to be you could wait until a year out or just under, but not anymore! Reliable, well known, and professional vendors are booking a year and a half to two years out, especially for prime dates [Memorial Weekend to Labor Day]. Depending on the vendor, booking early could be to your advantage. Most vendors will allow you to lock-in at current pricing even if your date isn’t on their rate card. You can save money and still have the top professional, that’s a win-win! Booking early allows you to enjoy the planning process and focus on the fun things like decorations and hanging with your “i-do crew.” With an industry that is always changing don’t lock yourself into one idea. Explore other themes and consider the suggestions of the professionals. What you love today may change a year from now. Be sure to manage your budget and don’t overspend on what you can’t afford. Hire real professionals with background and references and experience to back them up. Lastly, enjoy every minute with your friends, family and loved ones during the planning process.

Greenery 2017 PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR Written By Katie O'Malley Maloney, of Katie O Events

"color of the year"

has become In the past few years the a highly anticipated announcement by Pantone. A color is "awarded" this highest honor and is quite often used in many couples’ wedding design plan.

For 2017 the Pantone Color of the year is "greenery," defined as "a refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings." What a perfect description of a color to complement your wedding planning! Before you turn every detail into a "greenery dream" here are a few helpful tips to consider when incorporating the color of the year into your most special day of your year.

Keep it Natural:

Known as "nature's neutral" this is the perfect color to add in. The most natural way would be in your bouquets and centerpieces with loads of lush greenery. Bright white flowers with textured greenery are classic, clean and beautiful no matter what the season. Many times adding more greens to your bouquets and centerpieces can help keep costs down when planning your floral budget.

Less is always more:

When using a bright, bold color like “greenery” you can still make an impact without going overboard. Use "pops" of greenery in your printed materials, wedding day attire or through your floral design. Focus on using the green as an accent color rather than the primary design color.

Green is such a wonderful color to use in floral design and by combining it with simple shades of cream and ivory, the green really stands out! For this rustic yet elegant farm table setting, Rena’s Fine Flowers used Birch bark containers, filled with bright green Hydrangea, white garden Roses, Ranunculus, Dusty Miller and green Succulents. Lacy Maiden Hair fern and Green Trick Dianthus with Seeded Eucalyptus rounded out the theme, creating the most exquisite display! For more from this wedding, see page 50. Photo by Stephographie

Debbie at Dehn's Flowers designed this winter-perfect bouquet with a fragrant mix of evergreens, seeded eucalyptus, olive branches and Dusty Miller. The pops of white include Lisianthus, hypericum berries, Babies Breath and Star of Bethlehem, proving that Pantone's Color of the Year can indeed be used in ALL seasons! Seasonal pairings:

Incorporate deep purples, burgundy and orange with the greenery to your Winter/Fall affair. This creates a rich, inviting and luxurious color palette for your day. Consider using gold, mercury glass or pewter vessels and accents for a warm aesthetic.

For a Spring/Summer fete you can use soft lilac, pinks and spa blue to compliment the greenery for a soft, bright and calming feel for your design. Bring in silver or glass vessels or even milk glass to create a fresh look.

THE STORY OF DANIELLE & HAGEN. Photos By KT Merry Photography

I met Hagen while going to school and working as a model in Allentown, PA. He had been my roommate’s next door neighbor growing up. After we’d been dating for six years, he took me on a surprise date to The Inn at Erlowest in Lake George. Just as we were finishing up dinner, the sun began to set over the lake and he popped the question. We knew right away that we wanted to have our wedding in Saratoga Springs. Hagen had spent a lot of time there while growing up and had great passion for the town. We felt that Saratoga Springs was a perfect place to keep history alive along with having the right touch of the modern.

After touring the Canfield Casino for the first time we couldn’t imagine having our wedding anywhere else. We incorporated a vintage theme by adding antiques, family heirlooms, old black and white photos of our ancestors, and lots of flowers and greenery. My grandfather, a Baptist minister at our church, officiated our wedding. A horse and carriage took us for a ride around Congress Park. After the wedding we spent the week in Lake George with our family. We now live in Lehigh Valley, PA with two adorable white Ragdoll kittens that my mother gave us as a wedding gift named Nova and Moon. Another gift, a painting of the Casino, reminds us every day of how special our wedding day was.

Signature

COCKTAILS Brought to you by Saratoga BRIDE, Written By Christa Caimano

In today's modern wedding era,

every couple seems to have a signature drink served at their wedding, and for good reason. Other than the obvious fact that serving a perfectly detailed cocktail can be a cute touch, only serving one or two signature drinks can save you tons of cash, compared to a full open bar. What makes the drink special to the couple can differ from couple to couple. The drink could be their favorite cocktail, a new drink they concocted or simply a signature drink that is served at their venue.

Signature drinks date back years, even before brides & grooms did it, Kings used to create unique cocktails to impress guests at their own extravagant parties. As we know… Signature drinks in the 21st century are quite popular and you can find them everywhere – not just at weddings, but at restaurants, bars, parties! Finding the perfect signature drink for your wedding can seem like a daunting task, but it can be made quite simply. If you and your partner both enjoy, say - Margaritas, adding a personal element to the drink can make it come to life. Charming personal touches that can create a splendid signature drink could be decorating the drink by adding berries or flowers, changing the color to match your color theme or ditching the classic glass for a rustic mason jar. If you and your partner don't share a favorite cocktail, why not serve two signature cocktails! The groom enjoys an old fashioned while the bride likes appletinis – perfect! Two cocktails will provide the guests with a better selection of cocktail choices, while still remaining in budget. Not every signature cocktail has to be over the top decorative. The name of the cocktail can be the personal touch that you create. Incorporating the wedding’s location into the drink can be a nice way to show off the venue as well. When choosing a signature drink, think about why your guests are there, to see you get married of course! So why not play off of your wedding by the track by naming it the Final Stretch. Or your Gatsby-themed wedding by serving the cocktail in black and gold decorated glasses and calling it The Twenties Splash. Personal touches go a long way in creating the perfect wedding and a drink that embodies the couple. Signature drinks can be a cute way to show some creativity in your cocktail choices. Including local breweries, wineries, or distilleries can go well with your local food vendors. Don't get too hung up on the drink, sometimes just creating a unique name can be enough. Whether the drink is simple or complex, your guests will love the thought that goes into every signature drink!

Make the most of your wedding film

3 TIPS FROM AURORA CINEMA'S LEAD CINEMATOGRAPHER, KENNY HOPKINS: Your wedding film is one of the most important parts of your day, one of the few pieces you will keep for a lifetime. Over the years we've learned to look out for some small things that will help create a beautiful and emotional film. Here are just a few tips (specific to Aurora Cinema, but should apply regardless of the company you choose) that you can follow on your day to help make sure your wedding film is the absolute best it can be:

1. Bridal Prep – Keep the music turned way down (or off)! I know, you and your girls (or guys!) are blasting awesome music while you are getting ready, popping bottles, opening gifts, and reveling in the excitement that your wedding day is finally here! We want you to enjoy yourselves, get caught up in the excitement, and create wonderful memories. However, one key element in any great film is audio. We use professional gear to make sure we get clean and rich audio of all the laughs and glass clinks throughout your day. It’s so unfortunate when we come across a great clip that is unusable because the background music overpowers the moment as well as the perfect song that your film is set to. We want to put all that goofy fun stuff in your film! So please help us out and keep the music turned down very low (off is best of course, but not as fun!).

2. Ceremony – Hide the lavalier mics as best as possible. AKA: Your photographers favorite tip! A lavalier mic is the tiny mic that is clipped on the jacket of the groom and/or officiant to record audio of your vows. For best quality, the mics need to be placed about 6-12” away from the mouth. Be sure to wrap any wire around the back of the mic clip and place the wire and recorder discreetly in your inner jacket pocket. Next, – and this is key – be sure to tuck the clipped mic behind your boutonniere. Lavalier mics are so small that they are virtually unnoticeable anyway, but this is a small thing that will help to keep your suit looking clean and your photographer happily out of Photoshop!

3. Couples Portraits – Allot adequate time toward sunset portraits. For us, the portrait session is where we capture some of the best footage of your intimate and fun moments. Scheduling enough time is essential! We recommend beginning about 20-30 minutes before sunset and ending about 15-20 minutes after sunset. Talk with your photographer & cinematographer to organize logistics of the sunset shoot; they will both love you for taking this into consideration. Find out what time sunset is on your day and, as best as possible, organize your events around your sunset portrait session. There is so much more knowledge we would love to share, but unfortunately we cannot fit it all here! If you would like, head over to our blog or send us a message to learn a bit more about how we work and to see some of these tips in action! Draw Me A Memory CARICATURE ARTISTS Brought to you by Saratoga BRIDE, Written By Megin Potter, Photos Provided

A crowd of people gathers around at the reception, smiling and enjoying the same thing. They watch, intrigued by the image being completed before their eyes. In less than 10 minutes, a talented caricature artist has captured the likeness and disposition of their muse. It’s a unique, lasting portrait to take home; something to share, and to remember the special celebration for years to come...

Photo by Twah Dough tery of Style Art Life. For more of this wedd ing see page 114.

Hiring caricature artists as wedding reception entertainment has grown in popularity more and more, especially in the last decade, said artist Phil Singer. “In photos, you can miss so much,” he said. By picking up on the details, he strives to communicate personality and mood in a way that goes way beyond what a photo booth is capable of. While every wedding is different, the guest list is often comprised of friends, relatives, and acquaintances who’ve never met. Working everywhere from formal venues to the more casual backyard locales, the artist serves as an ice-breaker and a conversation starter. He creates fond childhood memories, as well as treasured family heirlooms. “We’re not just there to draw pictures; we’re there to have fun with people. We want everybody to have a good time with it. I love that we get to be part of the celebration. I never take that for granted,” emphasized caricature artist Rich Conley.

More than merely party favors, this is entertainment.

Caricature artists get the audience involved in the process, encouraging comments and a fun atmosphere. Playing off a couple’s dynamic, they draw them enjoying their interests and hobbies, like swimming or playing golf, for example. Singer said he can also do drawings of guests as famous couples such as Tarzan and Jane, or as a Wonder Woman tying up Superman with her magic lasso. “My goal isn’t to put big ears or a big nose on somebody, my goal is to make you look like you,” reassured Conley. Often working side-by-side at receptions for more than 50 people, the two artists have developed similar techniques that work well together, said Singer. Both do portraits on a themed background using black marker and watercolor on 8 ½” x 11” heavy stock paper that fits easily into

standard frames. Painting digitally on custom orders, Conley’s work is used on a range of items, from small 3” x 5” save-the-date cards, to “ginormous” display canvases, he said. “Caricature appeals to everyone, that’s the thing. It’s something that’s always fun and the artists are there to have fun, as well. Everyone is there to celebrate. It’s always a positive experience.”

Thinking about Booking?

These two 30-year veteran artists have some tips. Caricature artists should be contacted a minimum of six months in advance, especially if you’re looking to schedule a date during the busy fall wedding season. Make sure there is enough space, and a level surface to set up on. Consider lighting, shade, wind, and rain provisions. Finally, make sure your artist has live drawing experience with both children and adults. FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO www.PhilSingerArt.com AND www.RichConleyArt.com

Do it yourself!

HOW TO THRIVE AS A DIY BRIDE Brought to you by Saratoga BRIDE, Written By Megin Potter, Photos By Blackburn Portrait Design The fox is cleverly able to find its way around obstacles and get out of tricky situations. This is what Leslie Paddock and Jamie Gagne have been doing since they met, but that’s not why they chose to incorporate foxes into their woodland-themed wedding. Their reason was much more personal.

How to: Navigate the Rocky Terrain

Their relationship started when they were just entering into adulthood. After moving into the region from Quebec, Jamie attended Ballston Spa middle school. Soon, his family moved to Wilton, but he stayed close to the friends he had made. It was through these friends that he met Leslie, who grew up in Ballston Spa. Unfortunately, the day they decided to make their relationship official, was the same day Jamie’s grandfather passed away.

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Cathy Morin helped Leslie make plans. Cathy had recently planned her own 25th wedding anniversary party, and Leslie jumped at her offer to help plan their wedding. “We get along well and it was so overwhelming sorting through and organizing so many different things,” said Leslie. Cathy and Jamie’s father Ghislain Gagne coordinated shopping and rental arrangements, helped set-up decorations, and even drove to Canada to bring back DJ equipment.

Throughout the nine years that followed, Jamie and Leslie grew into a couple who supported each other through all their ups and downs. They journeyed through tumultuous setbacks, career changes, and even building their Wilton house together in 2010. That’s when they added a beautiful Shiba Inu puppy, Shiloh, to their family. She was cute and cuddly, a dog who loved to be outside digging holes and hunting squirrels. “Shiloh looked and acted just like a fox,” said Leslie. Despite being hard to train, in the two years they had her, they were able to teach her to do tricks, loved taking her to the dog park and watching her grow. They were devastated when, in 2012, she got out and was hit by a car. The couple went on to adopt three rescue dogs: Astrid, Fensi, and Roxy. In July 2015, they went on a camping trip to Treadway Mountain in Ticonderoga. To add to the chaos of a hectic schedule, packing, and traveling with three dogs, they had to reroute because of storm warnings.

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

“It started out pretty messy,” said Leslie. After a frustrating climb, a hard hike that included getting lost on a trail occasionally marked by only piles of small rocks, they reached the summit and reveled in the great views of Pharoah Lake, Vermont, and the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. It was dark by the time they set up the tent and Jamie started preparing dinner. Leslie ventured into the woods and saw Jamie fiddling with the camera on her way back. He asked her to sit beside him and pulled out a ring. “He said he wanted to be with me forever.” Jamie gave Leslie a fair trade, natureinspired organic flowing raw diamond engagement ring designed by Doron Merav, from Israel. They used the same jewelry-maker, found on Etsy, to make their wedding bands, as well.

How to: Define the Details that Matter

The couple found many unique ways to incorporate hand-made elements into their wedding day. To honor their perseverance and the love inspired by the foxy Shiloh, they chose a woodland theme. While Jamie was away working on a construction site in Kingston, his mother

“We spent too much time right off the bat, and the day before the wedding? It was just chaos,” said Leslie.

How to: Dance in the Rain

First, there was the rain. It was the kind of rain and wind that came so hard the vendors called to make sure the tent hadn’t blown away. “When it rained, it poured,” said Leslie. Setting up the tents, lights, and decorations for the more than 100 expected guests in the spacious yard was that much more challenging because of the pouring rain. Leslie said she was thankful her amazing aunts were still able to arrange the home-grown flowers on the wood slabs Jamie cut for each table’s centerpiece. The wooden sign-in frame, dance floor, DJ stage, prominent temple door entrance, and the stunning charred oak bar that he’d constructed, all made it. The rain continued the day of the ceremony. The family tried to beat the rain, moving chairs from one location to another, while Leslie had her hair and make-up done by Janelle Brown of Sanctuary Salon Saratoga. The men wore flowers in gun shell casings pinned to their shirts while Vinny's of Saratoga and Jamie's best man, Jake Dunkelbarger,

cut all of the men's hair including Leslie’s nephews - their first haircut ever. Leslie wore a lovely beaded dress borrowed from her friend, Kaleigh Hadley. The rosemary garland in her hair and the bouquet she carried were provided by Native Farm Flowers. While Leslie walked down a winding aisle, The Purple Curfew played an assortment of ceremonial music. Jonathon Van Dermer, Jamie’s cousin, served as the officiant, giving a touching speech in English and his native French. As the family ran around with umbrellas to cover the wedding party, the rain serendipitously let up just in time and didn’t start pouring down again until they were under the shelter of the tent. “We were able to still have fun. The rain stopped at the perfect moment,” said Leslie.

Druther’s Brewery provided beverages, and the buffet, catered by The Dizzy Chicken in Glens Falls, was gluten, dairy, and soy-free. Her mother and grandmother made the salad bar, and Jamie’s mother made an assortment of desserts, as well. “I wanted simple things,” said Leslie.

How to: Get Crafty

When one of Leslie’s friends that had agreed to help out with bussing the tables sprained her ankle two weeks before the wedding, they took the opportunity to add this chore in as a fun game. Printed aprons were placed at the table and the lucky “winner” got to clear away the dishes. “Everyone thought it was pretty funny – and a good idea!” said Leslie. Many of the guests complimented them on their handmade approach, saying it was the most beautiful wedding they had ever been too. Thriving during a DIY wedding requires many of the same skills that the couple learned during the course of their relationship. The wedding helped Leslie to learn that she can rely on Jamie (and others) to help her, as well as how to better share her feelings and communicate, she said. Since becoming a yoga instructor, she has found that it is an exercise that has become integral to her peace of mind, as well. “I let things go a lot easier now.”

Thinking about children yet?! MEGHAN LEMERY FRITZ

START HERE:

LCSW-R Meghan Fritz is a psychotherapist practicing in State College, PA. For more information: Email meghanlemery@yahoo.com

I was never the type of girl who dreamed of getting married and having children. As the youngest of four children I watched my two sisters get married in their early twenties and have multiple children right away. To me it seemed like a prison sentence and I made the decision I was going to pursue my career and be independent before I even thought about marriage or a family. As I entered my thirties and pursued … and reached, personal and professional goals, I started to crave stability. My dating history was always that of a Hollywood romantic comedy full of fancy dinners and weekend getaways with noncommittal men. I began to yearn for a quieter, simpler relationship full of movie marathons on the couch and a committed life partner who would take out the trash and break down the cardboard for me. When I met my husband we talked about the prospect of starting a family but it wasn’t something we pursued right away. We gave ourselves a year to be newlyweds and then decided it was time to expand our twosome. After an early loss we conceived the following month and I delivered my son this past fall on October 24th. We took every baby care class and registered for top of the line baby equipment. My husband attended every appointment with me and we 40  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

were certain we would nail this first time parent gig. This is where you should pause and laugh out loud. I was the childless independent woman who silently judged your parenting. If I sat next to you on a plane and your child was screaming I judged you for not being Zen enough to calm your baby. If your child screamed in the grocery store and was throwing a tantrum, I wondered why you weren’t a better disciplinarian. If my husband and I were out to dinner and witnessed a screaming child we would look at each other and say, “Our children will NEVER behave that way.” I also judged you for being obsessed with your children. If you wanted to tell me about little Johnny’s latest accomplishment or Suzie’s new word of the day I would think to myself, “Get a life, you are soooooo boring.” If you told me your children slept in your room or bed I judged you for setting up bad sleeping habits for the future. If your child ate dessert for breakfast I judged you for not having a good nutrition plan in place. If I came to visit you and your house was a mess I wondered why you couldn’t multi-task better and manage your children and taking care of your home and working. How hard can it be? And this is where I am humbled to my knees. I eat humble pie EVERY day as a

new mom. I am now the parent I made fun of and silently judged. When my husband asks me when I think we will transition our son into the nursery my eyes fill with tears and I say, “Senior year works for me!” I am brought to tears of joy with every burp, fart and nonsensical babble. I think nothing of calling Harvard to let them know a genius has been born. I take pictures of Charlie grinning from ear to ear and staring at a wall. Both are equally amazing. When my husband and I had our first outing as a twosome two months after Charlie was born we sat in a dimly lit bar and sipped on fancy cocktails and instead of flirting and making it about each other we looked at pictures and videos of him and talked about how he really has mastered how to burp. We are the parents we judged and made fun of. NOTHING prepares you for what being a parent will be like. It is the most amazing, terrifying, exhausting, exhilarating, joyful, humbling, sometimes mundane experience of my life. To anyone I judged - you have my sincerest apology, I can finally say to you, I get it, and if you want your baby saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

to sleep in your room until he’s 30 I understand. As every day passes I learn something new about this journey. Already I have a few things I wish I had done differently as a new Mom, so I will share my wisdom with you in the hopes that you will honor your intuition and peace of mind as you start the most amazing journey of your life. When you have your baby your hormone levels are all over the place. You are exhausted, scared, emotional and fragile. That being said it’s not the best time to open your home to the entire family to welcome your bundle of joy. For some that may be a comfort, but in my case it only added to the stress and anxiety I was feeling. My husband and I have both said that we wish we had told people they could come visit after a month or two. We needed to figure things out on our own and when you have visitors you can’t walk around without a bra ready to breast feed on demand. Depending on your family situation, evaluate whether this will help you or add to your anxiety. Be unapologetic in setting the boundaries you need to set to keep yourself free of unnecessary stress. Don’t be afraid to say NO to family members or friends who want to drop by and visit. Do what works best for you and your baby. Do not attempt to discuss anything with your partner in the middle of the night. When you are tired and overwhelmed and it is 3am this is not the time to discuss your relationship needs and wants. One thing I learned almost immediately is that my husband can help in some ways, but the majority of care giving for a newborn is provided by the mother, especially if you are breast feeding (NO judgement if you don’t breast feed!) If you attempt to keep score on who does what - you are setting yourself up

for deep resentment and bitterness. One strategy that really helped us as a couple and as new parents is we had coffee together every morning before the baby was awake and did a review of the day and night before. We went over what worked, what didn’t and how we could improve things for the new day. We also went over any heated moments or words spoken to each other that were hurtful. This strategy helped us clear the deck for a new day and kept us from staying in conflict for days on end. No one can prepare you for how tired and anxious you may feel. One of the things I found helpful was to call friends I trusted who had children and say, “I can’t believe you did this more than once???” or, “How come no one told me it was this hard???” The support other moms can offer has been a huge help to my spirit and has helped me keep my sense of humor along the way. Reach out to people you trust and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable about how you’re feeling. Your ability to be honest and share the raw truth of your emotions will help you feel less isolated and alone. Everyone we talk to has told us, “Hang in there, it does get easier,” and guess what? It does! I am so much more comfortable and confident in caring for my son. I know how to soothe him more quickly and I don’t always feel like my heart is in my throat ready to explode. One thing that I have learned is the best way to navigate the newborn period is stay present and in the moment. When I have felt like I can’t see straight and the walls are caving in simply focusing on my breath helps to ground me and remind me that this is a moment, it will not last forever. Ask for support and the help you need as you become a parent for the first time. Let go of trying to act like you have it all

together and allow yourself to laugh at the absurdity of what goes on day to day. I never knew I could bounce on an exercise ball, sing my son to sleep, hold a pacifier in his mouth and answer email all at the same time. You feel like a rock star and boot camp class participant all at the same time. At the end of the day nothing prepares you for the bond and amount of love you will feel for your baby. Keep your sense of humor, go easy on yourself during the tough moments and call in your support team to keep you sane. I promise, it does get easier day by day! If I run into in the grocery store and your child is screaming I also promise not to judge you but to give you a high five and a secret handshake that all new mothers know. Remember, at the end of the day no one is better at being your baby’s mother than you are. You were handpicked to raise your children and no one knows what they need better than you do. Trust in your amazing mothers’ intuition to guide and lead you and when in doubt call on the wisdom of those around you. YOU ARE WORTH IT.

We're Engaged! ASHLEY & CORY PHOTOS BY: THE HARRIS CO.

Our relationship is so easy… But the proposal was the hard part. I know she’s secretly a hopeless romantic, so I know I needed to impress her a little bit. All women gush over these commercials and Pinterest ideas, that it’s hard to be creative. It seems like everything has been done. So in this case I mainly wanted to be genuine and ourselves. I asked her sister Amber to ask Ashley to do a "photoshoot for her portfolio." I knew Ashley would say yes, and then she would ask me to help. She’s also very persistent and wouldn’t take NO for an answer. So, she really fell into my trap. I had a few signs written out that said ‘Will You’ and ‘Marry Me’ on them that my brother and sister in law would be holding up behind us. She was supposed to see the signs through the images on the camera but it ended up being -20º out, so she was getting pretty antsy. She turned around early, sensing something was going on and ended up seeing them before she was supposed to. So I got down on one knee and popped the question.

BROOKE & JOHN PHOTOS BY: BLACKBURN PORTRAIT DESIGN

July 29, 2016, is a summer night I will never forget. John made plans for us to walk downtown to try a new restaurant that had just opened. Apparently, he had quite the surprise in store! We started to walk through Congress Park (where we had our very first date!) and John asked me if I remembered which bench we sat on that night, and I pointed it out (with much certainty!) As I turned around, after checking out the view of the park below, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! Of course, I said, “Yes!” But the surprise didn’t stop there! As we were walking through the park (me trying to keep it together!) he told me we were going to 42  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

Chianti. (We first met at Chianti over two years ago, during a PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund) fundraiser, for one of John’s good friends.) I come from a horse racing family and John is an avid racing fan and writes for racing blog, so our destinies were aligned. The final surprise was waiting at Chianti. I opened the double doors of the restaurant to find all our saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

The most memorable part for me was the thought of losing the ring. I was extremely nervous and couldn’t stop talking on the way to the "photoshoot” -all I could think of was- “what if I lose the ring?” So, I kept feeling in my pocket making sure it was still there. It was so cold out that day as well, so things moved along fast. It’s almost like a blur now. The fact that I was so nervous I couldn’t say anything but “Willyoumarryme?" it was apparently pretty funny to everyone else too.

family members waiting on the other side. John invited them (from all parts of the East Coast!) to be there to celebrate with us. It was the best night of my life! We had our engagement photo shoot at Saratoga Race Course - it was a no-brainer for us, since we both have special memories there with each other and our families. The photo shoot was a lot of fun - it was the first time we have had the track all to ourselves! saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Earthy, fresh, rustic and elegant is how I would describe this wedding we did for Lorraine and Curt on Lake George at The Wiawaka Holiday House. This rustic arch (that the groom made!) was filled with fresh garden hydrangea, fresh moss, maiden hair ferns, garden roses and simple greens. …And who doesn't love a carpet of petals to walk down on their wedding day?! The reception setting was perfect… Birchbark containers and candles with green hydrangea, creamy garden roses, lisianthus, tall birch branches and yummy succulents. The Sail Cloth tent from Rain or Shine Tent Company provided the perfect setting for this couple - complete with farm tables and incredible food by Lily and The Rose Catering, as these amazing photos by Stephographie prove … and of course, pulling the whole weekend together was Tonya from Pellegrini Events! DID YOU KNOW THAT

W

hether it is budgetary concerns, a need to avoid stress, or just wanting your wedding to be totally private elopements are the new “in” thing! Knowing that couples still want special details and cool photos to remember their wedding day I bring you some inspiration… I wanted to celebrate this trend and do something fun and funky with a retro feel for this photo shoot. I love the 1940s and 1950s and wanted to convey that “Liz Taylor/Rat Pack” look, so the hunt was on for all the “right” elements… Every “elopement” starts with that thought of… “Let’s run away and get married!” and while working with Peter Gailor on a previous photo shoot for Simply Saratoga magazine, I discovered he had a Vespa – and he loved the idea of his beloved Italian beauty being used for yet another photo shoot! Since I was creating an “Elopement at City Hall, with dinner at the local diner and a weekend of camping in the Adirondacks!” look and feel to the photo shoot, I had to ask Bob McKenna if he would let us stage this at the Dunning Street Station – luckily, he said yes! Now, for the rest of the details… The 1950’s style dress and tux were from Danielle's. The petite bouquet was made by Samantha Nass Floral Design. My sister has an online eBay shop for vintage items, so some of the little accessories were from her (love those gloves and table cloth!!) I threw in the game of LIFE because it was so retro, as were the Hostess cakes and the vintage Coke bottles! Leeanne Bath of Strut Spalontique did an excellent job of creating the perfect hair & makeup look! The shoes were from Charlotte Russe at the mall and I made the Just Married sign for the back of the Vespa. I printed the words in a funky font and framed it - so simple! The Airstream Trailer was at the Appel Inn in Altamont – a perfect match for our Retro Elopement shoot!

e cannot imagine a more beautiful and fantasy-inspiring aesthetic union than bridal fashion and ballet. In the winter of 2016, Lily Saratoga collaborated with Krystal Balzer Photography, Samantha Nass Floral Design, Carina Scott Makeup and Saratoga’s National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame to bring a ballet-inspired photoshoot to life. From the first photograph snapped, what transpired was every bit as magical as we hoped it would be! Each year we attend Bridal Market in New York City, during which time we get to preview the latest in Bridal Fashion. It's always remarkable visiting Modern Trousseau in their New York City showroom and seeing what designer Callie Tein has created. Modern Trousseau gowns are so special to us - each being designed and made right here in the US using the finest fabrics imaginable. Callie's Fall 2016 Couture Collection was titled "Fairytales Transformed into Reality" and it was nothing short of that! Each gown in this collection was adorned with the most intricate details - silk, delicate tulle, embroidery, blush and warm ivory tones - easily the most romantic collection we had ever seen. “Adore,” our favorite dress from this collection, is a beautiful tulle ballgown with a halter neck lace bodice that features a dramatic lace-up back. With its soft blush color, dreamy fabric, and embodiment of a ballerina's en pointe shoes, we knew that we had to have it photographed at the National Museum of Dance! Another featured gown was “Wendy” - a whimsical creation featuring layers upon layers of French tulle and a bustier bodice made of embroidered French lace. Lastly, “Sierra” is a strapless ballgown featuring blush and gold handembroidered brocade from Europe – breathtaking!

With these amazing gowns as our inspiration, all we had to do was assemble our photoshoot team. Krystal Balzer was the perfect choice for photography as her expertly brilliant and vivid photos capture exquisite color, detail, and all the romanticism a wedding day calls for. Local makeup artist, Carina Scott, sculpted the models with soft romantic makeup and ballerina inspired up-dos. Each dancer had her own unique style of makeup to compliment the gown she was modeling. To complement the elegance of Modern Trousseau, Samantha Nass Floral Design created a stunning centerpiece and coordinated ensembles of gorgeous handheld bouquets carefully paired with each dress. The "Sierra" pairing features gold leaf and delicate blush roses, meanwhile, mixed greens and soft florals were used to create a whimsical and unstructured bouquet to complement "Adore.” "Wendy" was accented perfectly with the pageant bouquet using similar soft hues. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Raglan Designs also supplied a handmade silk robe for the dancers to wear between takes. Her robes are custom-made for brides and bridesmaids to match their color palettes. For our shoot, she chose soft and bright pinks to accent the romantic bridal gowns. Our photo shoot wouldn't have been complete without our gorgeous ballerina models. Tess and Alice are students from the National Museum of Dance School of the Arts and Sarah also had years of dance experience. Our entire professional team was in awe of their talent, grace and beauty. They made posing en pointe in a ballgown look effortless! The Saratoga National Dance Museum was the perfect backdrop to capture these photographs. Not only is it an incredible wedding venue, but also a true ballet performance space. This snowy day was perfect from start to finish and a year later, we are still swooning.

“HOSPITALITY” From the iconic Hall of Springs to the latest barn weddings… Mazzone Hospitality continually pushes to "deliver the difference" in everything they do.

Written by Maureen Werther Photos by Tracey Buyce Photography

I

magine someone driving up in a beat-up 1968 gold Ford Pinto to make you an offer on your busy restaurant business. Now imagine the person driving that Pinto is Angelo Mazzone. Hard to imagine, right?

in 1976 was a defining moment for the 27-year-old Mazzone who, after graduating from culinary school and working for five years as Union College’s first director of food services, decided it was time to venture out on his own.

Well, it happened. And that meeting

The diner for sale was Peggy’s in downtown

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Schenectady and it was on the market for $160,000. Angelo had only $30,000 to offer, but he managed to convince Peggy’s owner, LeGrande Serras, that he was worth taking a chance on. Serras held the remaining $130,000 note on the diner and the rest, as they say, is history.

2017 | SARATOGA BRIDE  | 75

Today, the name “Mazzone” is synonymous with hospitality and everything that word encompasses. Quite literally from soup to nuts, whether you are dining at a Mazzone restaurant, attending an event catered by Mazzone Hospitality at one of its several locations, or hosting your own Mazzone Signature Event at your business or home, your experience will be nothing less than stellar. And that’s not idle talk. Angelo and

his crackerjack team guarantee it. “People have always asked me what my strategic plan has been, and I’ve told them ‘I don’t have a strategic plan!’” he says laughing. “My plan for years was, ‘Get the deal and we’ll figure out how to do it,’ My staff knew this too.” "I've always said, if we can offer great food and great service, the rest will fall into place." Angelo took a huge risk when he bought Peggy’s. But, the risks didn’t end there. Eight years later, after establishing himself as a catering company to be reckoned with, Angelo made another bold decision

– to purchase the historic 1600’s Glen Sanders mansion in Scotia, NY. “Everybody said that it was another huge risk. They thought I was crazy! Some people didn’t even know where Scotia was!” he said. Kevin Sykes, director of Hospitality and longtime employee, agrees. “Don’t forget, at this time Glen Sanders was just an historic mansion. It didn’t come with a banquet facility or an Inn.” “But I saw the facility and the view of the river,” says Angelo, “and I knew it was the place.”

From there, Mazzone went on to become a force in Saratoga Springs, becoming the exclusive caterer for the renowned Hall of Springs. Several restaurants and venues followed in rapid succession: 677 Prime, Aperitivo, and of course, Prime at Saratoga National. As one business turned into another, the prevailing philosophy at Mazzone Hospitality continues to be to offer great food and even better customer service. “People will come up to me and say, ‘The food was great, but the service was even better,” says Angelo. Although it seems, to the casual observer, that Angelo Mazzone has led a charmed life, that’s not the case at all. Growing up on Long Island, Angelo was the eldest in a family of five. His father died when Angelo was very young, and he worked in his grandfather’s bakery from the time he was eight, to help his mother support the family. Along the way, good food and a great experience became the guiding principles that would lead him to the success his company enjoys today. continued on page 80...

And his team embodies that same commitment to making memorable experiences for their clients.

Brittany Lanning, a recent bride, had this to say about the entire Mazzone experience, from the wedding stationary to, quite literally, the icing on the cake:

The food, the service, the drinks, the band – everything was so on point and amazing. Thank you for taking our vision one step further to create an amazing evening for us and our guests. I’ve never heard so many people compliment the hospitality of the wait staff and the venue. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” “You have to have a real passion for this business, says Kevin. “Otherwise, you absolutely cannot do it.”

Today, Mazzone Hospitality is really three companies under one umbrella. “We are a restaurant company, a catering event company, and a business dining company,” says Angelo. Through all of it, we have always been a catering company that happens to also own restaurants and cafes. When I ask Kevin and Angelo if they do more events than weddings, or vice versa, Kevin answers the question perfectly.

The overarching goal for Angelo and his entire team is to make the event the most memorable and enjoyable occasion possible. “I’ve never worried about making the money,” says Angelo. “I’ve always said, ‘Give them great food and great service, and the money will come.’” At the root of it all, is relationships. Angelo and his entire team – which now numbers between 1,100 and 1,200 people – understand that cultivating those relationships is what keeps people coming back. It’s the backbone of the business.

That, and exceptional customer service. “That’s been Angelo’s message to his staff from Day One,” says Kevin. “He’s taught that to everybody on the team, and if you’re going to succeed in this company, it’s something you have to embrace. We always joke, ‘What would Angelo do, what would he say, what would he think?’”

“Every bride considers her wedding to be an ‘event.’” So true, and as it should be. Kevin and his team, under the tutelage and guidance of Angelo have learned how to cultivate relationships with prospective clients. “We never just hand them a book with menu items and pricing. We want to find out about them and what they envision for their special day,” says Kevin. Things like, “How did he propose?” and “Where were you when he gave you the ring?” Those are the important questions that Kevin and his sales team ask. “We want to find out what’s going on in their heads and what is going to work well for them,” adds Kevin. For Julia Ingersoll, it’s fair to say that Mazzone Hospitality did just that for her wedding to husband, Jesse Marco at the Canfield Casino in November 2016.

"Having Mazzone Hospitality handle my wedding was like becoming part of another family. “Everyone always says that it is the bride’s day. But, as the bride, you are also worried about everyone else. It’s also about parents giving away their daughter, and a mother seeing her son becoming a husband. Mazzone Hospitality understands all of this. They know and completely respect that mom may be feeling nervous, grandma may have special needs, or a great aunt can only eat certain food. They essentially made it extremely easy for me to enjoy my day. But, it goes even deeper than that. They protected me and acted as a care-giver, while showing great sensitivity to the gamut of emotions being experienced by other members of my family and my in-laws.

They almost become like another set of parents. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

Paradise

Tara & Scott jet skiing in Bora Bora.

Brought to you by Saratoga BRIDE • Written by Megin Potter • Photos Provided Diving into the information-saturated world of vacation planning can feel like wading through shark-infested waters. It is possible to experience the honeymoon of your dreams however, and it may even include actually swimming with sharks. “We were able to swim with sharks and stingrays in the turquoise water, to feed (them) as they swam right alongside of us, gliding their smooth bodies on our arms and legs,” said Tara Jackson. She was swimming around in the French Polynesian island of Moorea with her new husband, Scott, when a giant 12’-wide manta ray glided by beneath them. An experienced traveler, she’d explored 28 countries but had never been a part

82  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

of something as extraordinary as her honeymoon turned out to be. GOING BEYOND BEAUTIFUL “The word “incredible” doesn’t do our experience justice,” said Tara. After their September 2016 wedding, the couple enjoyed a combination of romance, culture, and adventure on their spectacular dream honeymoon. “The water goes from a deep royal blue, changes to a tropical green, to a baby blue, and into a white sky blue. It is incredible. Literally, it’s something you wouldn’t believe is real unless you saw it,” she said. The Jackson’s over-the-sea bungalow afforded them a view of the dolphin sanctuary next door, accompanied by the

sounds of dolphins singing in the night. They boarded the luxurious Paul Gauguin cruise ship, which carried them in style through the romantic islands, while Jet Ski and ATV excursions gave them aweinspiring opportunities to examine the intricacies of the landscape up close. The hardest they laughed during the entire trip was when they were invited to participate in a cultural dance with the locals, said Tara. They were honored by the traditional Polynesian Blessing Ceremony, and delighted to taste regional cuisine, such as fresh tuna in coconut milk and spices. They were enchanted by the hand-crafted black pearl jewelry for sale, and amazed by the vanilla grove plantation tour. It was saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

another scent, that of jasmine, which Tara found especially breathtaking. “When I close my eyes and think about it, I smell jasmine. They carry it around and hand it out. It’s in their hair, and presented on plates of bamboo leaves. The smell is so calming and relaxing. It’s everywhere and it’s just so cool,” she said. DIYERS DON’T GET THIS Getting this kind of VIP treatment is not something that the Jacksons likely would’ve experienced without the help of a dedicated travel agent. “The internet cannot VIP you,” advises Anne Gordon of Live Life Travel, an affiliate of Worldview Travel, Virtuoso Member. Typically getting calls from people after saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

they’ve gotten frustrated from trying to plan a vacation themselves, she serves as a detail-oriented, unbiased mediator with the global expertise, access, and connections to make dreams into a reality. “From step one, to when the plane landed at home, it was just a dream,” said Tara. Gordon’s clients, including Tara, are often given tailored care-packages with items including an itinerary, packing list, and luggage scale, and can contact her with questions at any time on their trip. She sources information from her own travel experiences, site inspections of locations and resorts, professional development seminars and events, as well as a large network of contacts.

Desiree & Chris zip-lining with Gibbons in the jungles of Chiang Mai, Thailand.

This kind of insight has guided travelers through the unforeseen pitfalls of planning. She advises how to best accommodate the hemispherical and seasonal variances or to obtain a sunset view off the shores of Key West unobstructed by a cluster of cruise ships. "Everything that we plan is very customized and personal to each client." WONDER AND WHITE SANDY BEACHES Sensitive to the considerations of a couple who would likely be exhausted traveling to Thailand after their wedding reception, she ensured cocktails, food, and massages were lined up waiting for honeymooners Christopher and Desiree Mefford upon their arrival.

In addition to relaxing on the white sandy beaches surrounded by the lush greenery of Koh Samui Island, the Meffords went kayaking and on a zip-lining adventure through the Chiang Mai jungle. They visited the impressive and revered temples, were treated to a private market tour, got an authentic cooking lesson and ate with a local family.

AN AUTHENTIC TASTE OF THE OLD COUNTRY

“I’ll spend as much time as it takes to get it right,” assured Gordon. She appreciates, gets excited about, and loves the opportunity to help someone, she said.

In their special Pompeii excursion, which included climbing in 4x4ss up to the volcano’s summit, the Bettingers enjoyed the country’s exceptional wine.

“Go for what you really, really want.” 84  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

Knowing how important a room with an amazing view can have on creating a uniquely amazing experience, Gordon arranged for Jeff and Shirah Bettinger’s honeymoon to Italy’s Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast to include a room with an unforgettable view of Mt. Vesuvius across the bay.

“Volcanic ash makes some of the best wine in the world. You would never think that, but it’s true and we wanted them to experience that for themselves as part of the excursion,” she said. While discovering the charm of old-country Italian lemon farms, the authentic tastes of lemonade, limoncello, fine olive oils, Italian wines, cured meats and cheeses graced the Bettinger’s menu, all while they took a Neapolitan pizza making class as well.

STOP DREAMING, START PLANNING By planning in advance - at least nine months before the expected departure dates - travelers can have the largest selection of hotels and rooms to choose from, said Gordon. Resorts in Mexico and Jamaica are upgrading now to include options such as over-the-water bungalows to make this fantasy more easily accessible than it’s ever been. “They bring the dream a little closer to everyone,” said Gordon. Alyssa & Devin

LATHAM, NY

Our Story...

Devin and I met when we were 7 years old, but it wasn’t until we were 22 that he swept me off my feet. I lived in Chicago at the time, and he decided it was time to make his long-time crush known. He sent me a new gift almost every month! From dozens of roses, to a giant teddy bear, to a sweatshirt that said "Team Devin" on the back, this was a man I couldn't ignore. I moved back home to Latham, only to fall in love with my best friend and "say yes" to him in January 2016. We were on a Disney Cruise with my family and

made a stop at Disney’s Private Island in the Bahamas. Exploring the island, just the two of us, we found a secluded beach. Devin pulled a beautiful, crystal-embellished, custom-made silver shoe out of his bag. It was breathtaking. “Alyssa,” he began, “I’ve been chasing you my whole life. I’ve always had a little piece of you- your kindness and your friendship- you’re my Cinderella. But today I’m asking for all of you, forever.” He got down on one knee and pulled out a beautiful ring, and that’s when he popped the question. I cried my eyes out with joy! We were married 4 months later at Northway Church in front of 400 of our family members, friends, and acquaintances,

followed by a beautiful cupcake reception. We then enjoyed a private reception with family at the Canfield Casino in Saratoga. We had an unusual problem though; we couldn’t get people to sit for dinner! Even though it was just dinner music, people kept getting up and dancing, socializing, and celebrating! That “problem” was symbolic of our marriage. Our marriage has been full of laughter, love, and celebration. There’s nothing like waking up next to your committed best friend every single day! Although our wedding was everything I ever dreamed of, our marriage has been even better. Truly, a happily ever after.

A cozy weekend in Lake Placid, then Hawaii for 2 weeks!

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

During your engagement, focus on your marriage more than you focus on the wedding. A wedding is a one-day event, but a marriage is for a lifetime. Devin and I focused on completing a pre-marital counseling course during our engagement. It was the best thing we could have done! When the wedding day finally came, I was relaxed and stress-free because I was focused on Devin and I, not the details of the day and the performance of the vendors. I knew whatever happened at the end of the day, Devin and I were prepared to flourish as a couple in the days to come!

Megan & John

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY

Our Story...

John & I met in 2011 in Newport, Rhode Island while working together. I had just graduated college and was a hostess at a local restaurant and John was a Sous Chef. John likes to tell the story of when I walked through the kitchen door one day, said “hello” and he without hesitation, dropped a Caesar salad on the floor. I still laugh thinking about that day! We began dating after a couple months of working together and what seemed like it would just be

90  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

a “summer fling” turned into, “hey let’s move to Maryland together,” and we did! We are both on-the-go people working in the same industry (Me, an event manager and John a Chef) and we started this adventure together, moving someplace I had never even been to! Fast forward 5 years after many weekend trips to DC, NYC and exploring Baltimore, John proposed when the clock struck midnight on 12.13.14 after dragging me out of the house with the rouse that there was a “Christmas event” at midnight in the next town over. I love all things Christmas so I was excited, but

when we got there, it was a ghost town. The two-story Christmas tree was lit, the outdoor fireplace was burning and the Christmas music blaring, we just happened to be the only ones there. John started reading me a letter he had written, it started with “So here we are about to start a new adventure on a day that will only happen once in history, 12.13.14…” It was the best day ever and through all the wedding planning from Maryland and then moving back to NY a week before the wedding, it has been one crazy adventure after another!

Chris and Sarah met four years ago in Chris’s hometown of Chatham, NY. Sarah was living there at the time, and Chris was home for the holidays. They met through mutual friends and had an instant connection, the only problem was that Chris went back to Montana a few days later where he was living at the time. Texts turned into phone calls and he came home to visit again in March. Sarah

94  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

flew out to see him in Montana in April, and then the two drove home together (over 400 miles!) and haven’t left each others side since. Chris proposed two years later, in their first home together with the help of Sarah’s sister and their dog, Oakley. In planning their wedding, the couple decided to keep the wedding very comfortable and casual with a real local feel. The Columbia County Fairgrounds is a local hotspot for weddings and ceremonies, and they felt it was perfect for them too! Guests enjoyed locally crafted

beer and wine, and some delicious BBQ food while the couple’s favorite band had everyone dancing the night away playing classic rock songs and one-hit-wonders! Many of the wedding details were ideas from the Bride and Groom, and they’ve credited much of ‘the final touches’ to the heartfelt helping hands of their families and friends. Chris and Sarah reside in Kinderhook New York where they’ve been very busy post-wedding; the couple is expecting their first child, due in March!

Sylviee & Etienne

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY

Our Story...

On July 12 2014, family and friends gathered in Maryland to celebrate the completion of my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from SUNY Old Westbury. That’s where I met Etienne, a family friend. I could not help but notice the smile on his face. We stood in the hallway for close to 2 hours, talking about goals, aspirations, and more. We danced together all night and as the sun came up, we shared our first kiss, and my

96  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

heart was his. After a few months of dating long-distance, we moved to Malta where I worked as a teacher and he as a safety engineer. On the evening of our anniversary, just after dinner, I presented Etienne with a surprise gift. He ripped off the wrapping paper in all excitement and danced happily at the sight of his favorite cologne. The next thing I knew, he was down on one knee with a little grey box and proposed. After he put the ring on my finger, it was my turn to be overjoyed and dance around happily.

We chose to have the ceremony at our church, Corpus Christi in Round Lake, and the reception in the elegant environment at Excelsior Springs. Because our West African cultural heritage is important to us, we both changed into traditional outfits for the reception. Ally, who used to be the event coordinator, and everyone else involved, welcomed us warmly and made sure we were happy. I loved the service. It was affordable, the food was great, and the bartender was amazing!

Kait & Bart

NEW YORK CITY

Our Story...

If you had told either of us 14 years ago when we graduated from Johnstown High School that we would end up together, it’s safe to say that neither of us would have believed you. Bart and I went to school together for six years, from 7th to 12th grade, and managed to never speak to each other – not even once! How? We still wonder this every.single.day. While we both knew each other by name and had many of the same friends, our social

98  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

paths never crossed. Fast forward to years later after college graduation, where we ran into each other in a local pub while visiting our hometown for the weekend. Bart asked me out for ice cream, and the rest is history. We dated long distance for two years, until Bart finally moved to New York City where we have built a beautiful life together. I am an Art Director for the Dr. Oz Show, and Bart is a middle school Physical Education teacher in the South Bronx. True love finds you in the most unexpected places, in the most unconventional ways, and sometimes it’s right under your nose.

We chose to get married in the Adirondacks, as they hold a lot of meaning for us. We’re both from the Southern Adirondacks, and we spent a lot of our first two years meeting on weekends there since we lived in separate cities (I in New York, and Bart in Albany). There’s nothing like a summer night on the lake, and we wanted our friends and family to share in this. We chose the Sagamore, as we could host a weekend of events where our guests could all stay together and share in the magic of the mountains.

SPECIAL TOUCHES As a TV Art Director and set decorator by trade, design is one of my greatest passions. I wanted our wedding design to reflect things we love. We incorporated many items from my personal collection... Vintage brass swans used as flower vessels and objects on guests' tables (even as our cake topper!) a huge vintage mirror above the escort card table that greeted guests (a double of one that hangs in our apartment.) Rocks, crystals and geodes from our own collection. We used rocks and crystals everywhere... Small slices of agate with gold calligraphy for our escort cards, large slices of natural colored geodes that I hand gold leafed as table numbers, and even on our wedding cake. Lori from the Sagamore created three cakes for us, each one different. One was marbleized, one was gold leafed, and the center cake was made to look like a giant geode - the sugar crystals were amazing! This cake was topped with 2 small gold swans to tie in the rest of the decor. We highlighted our love of the Adirondacks in subtle, elegant ways, by using ferns and moss throughout the decor. David Michael Schmidt brought our vision to life in a way that felt like us. Dani from Sweet Dani B created a custom Wedding logo for our weekend. We used this image on many itemsour save the date, our invitation, our guest Welcome bags, programs, menus, ice sculpture, favor boxes- It helped to tie everything together.

ALBANY, NY

Our Story...

We both grew up locally and went to Siena College in Loudonville, but didn’t meet until years after college! And even at that - we met the old fashioned way - at a bar over $2 beers. We hit it off instantly that first night and started dating soon after. Neither one of us wanted our first date to end, so we went out for drinks

100  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

afterwards laughing the whole time. I was instantly drawn to Matt’s positive outlook on everything and Matt loved making me smile. Matt proposed in my favorite place, Cape May, New Jersey, looking out at the ocean. Imagine my surprise when I turned around to find our whole family clapping behind us! The wedding day at St. Mary’s historic church in Albany and reception at 90 State was a dream

come true. With a guest list pushing 200, we were blessed to have both of our extended families there with us, dancing all night! We love traveling together and trying new things - like food and wine! Some of our favorite places are Jamaica, St. Lucia and most recently Miami!

Ashley & Cory

CLIFTON PARK, NY

Our Story...

ASHLEY: We met in 7th grade through a mutual friend and both went to Guilderland. After college, the same mutual friend married my best friend and Cory and I were both in their wedding. About a year later, Cory challenged me to a game of Draw Something and after literally 500 rounds of playing, instead of drawing a picture he asked me out to lunch. I kindly responded with “Are

102  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

you seriously asking me out over Draw Something?” but on our first date, I knew after we had talked for 3 hours straight that he was different than anyone else I’ve ever dated. I felt so comfortable being myself, we got along so well and I just had this nagging feeling that this one would work out. I could see myself falling in love and having a family with him. CORY: I always joke that I always knew she was the one since we first met, but to be honest, sometimes I do feel that way. I’ve

never connected with someone quite like how I connect with Ashley. So I knew it from the instant she said yes to my outrageous lunch request. ASHLEY: After dating for about three years and buying a house together, Cory asked me to marry him in January 2015. We had a year and a half to plan, and got married on August 20 2016. It was honestly the best day of our lives and we absolutely love reliving it through our video and pictures.

SPECIAL TOUCHES

I made the program on a white door using a Cricut, Mod Podge and acrylic paint. I also designed and made the table numbers, the specialty drink sign and the paint pallet at the ceremony. We hand made the favors by cutting the extra wood from our front porch, spray painting them black, attaching a bottle opener and painting flowers on them.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

Something WILL go wrong that day! It might be small as a motorcycle going by during your ceremony or it could be something as big as a bridesmaid bailing on you last minute. Just prepare yourself for that fact and you'll be able to handle it much better when the time comes. Remember that you will still get married, and your new husband or wife will still love you, even if your flowers are the wrong color. Also, be in the present moment. Don't forget to eat. Don't forget to get in pictures with friends and family, you'll want to see how you both looked way before your professional photos come in. Take everything in and notice the feeling of joy you have, how everyone is there to support you and your new spouse …and take time to breathe with your partner, even if it's just for a moment to gather yourself - it will be worth it!!

Julia & Anthony

ALBANY, NY

Our Story...

Julia and I are both from the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts. One weekend in 2007, I was visiting my friend John at UMASS Amherst. The stars aligned because also visiting that weekend was his sister, Laura and her friend Julia. Julia and I met, we all had a blast, I asked for her number, and the rest is history. Laura and John are still some our best friends and were in the wedding. After months of pleading my case to be her boyfriend, Julia gave in. Unfortunately, around that same time, she was also leaving

104  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

for Stonehill College in the Boston area while I attended SUNY Albany. Every few weeks, I made the trek from Albany to Easton, MA. Her friends at Stonehill became mine, and my friends at SUNY became hers. After four years of being long distance, Julia moved to Albany. We now have a home, two dogs, Sasha and Piper, and have made a great life together. We love biking and hiking with our dogs, spending time with friends, visiting our families in the Berkshires and traveling and exploring new places. On July 4th, 2014, I proposed at Normanskill Farm near our house with Sasha and Piper by our side. There were a few hiccups including

river rapids and poison ivy, but otherwise it was perfect. We decided to have a long engagement to enjoy being engaged and make planning stress free (a good effort but not really possible). As many couples with outdoor ceremonies nervously anticipate, weather was heavy on our minds for our wedding day. Luckily, it was perfect. Old Daley on Crooked Lake was everything we had hoped and imagined for our wedding venue, and more. It was truly humbling to be surrounded by our closest friends and family that came from near and far to be with us on our wedding day. We’ve made so many memories as a couple over the years and are excited for the future as husband and wife.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

Don't sweat the small stuff during planning! As hard as it is to realize in the moment, the wedding will come together beautifully whether you stress about it or not. On the wedding day, relax, have fun and take it all in as much as you can. It goes SO FAST but will be the best day ever! HUDSON, NY

Our Story...

Our story starts on the school bus in 6th grade. This is where Joe and I met. This is where Joe would persistently confess his love for me and how we were going to get married, move to Montana and have 7 boys. Also where I would scoff at his gestures. We would remain friends throughout high school. After high school, Joe became a Marine in the infantry and shortly after he deployed to Iraq and I moved to Vancouver, Canada to attend school. Our lives were going in very different directions. Fast forward a few years... We would run into each other every so often

We found the perfect venue for our Chic Country Wedding! Next, we met with David from Renaissance Floral. We made an instant connection. I had such trust in his designs. David’s attention to detail was impeccable. I made a Pinterest board and shared it with him and my vision for our wedding came alive.

Kimberly & Alan

CAMBRIDGE, NY

Our Story... When the Wedding Barn Lady is married in her Own Barn! After being together almost 10 years, this wedding was a long time coming! As Alan and I had searched thousands of miles over the years for the right farm to start the next chapter in our lives together, we wanted to wait as well, to be married in our very own Wedding Barn. Not only did we get married in our own barn, but Alan married me TWICE! As the barn was being converted from an old dairy farm into an elegant rustic wedding barn venue, we knew we had to be the first couple married there! It was an unseasonably warm December 2015, Alan being his typical thoughtful romantic self, proposed we get married on that following Saturday (December 12th.) The next day I purchased a beautiful

110  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

royal blue lace dress at Ferri Formals, my friend Suzanne from Blooms, made me the most beautiful bouquet with red berries, red roses and green conifer and a boutonniere for Alan too! Our most beloved friend Patricia Wesner from Marry Us Patty performed our ceremony and her sweet husband Mark was our witness. We wrote our own vows, as we stood in the center of our 1865 barn and pledged our eternal love to each other. How lucky is a girl to marry her sweetheart again that following fall - Sept 24th, 2016! As we spent the summer hosting weddings for others, it was finally our turn, to do it again in front of our family and friends. Now that is was my turn to be a bride, I could not have done it without my much loved assistant, Jamie Brannock! Guests arrived from all over the country joining us in a weekend of celebration! Surrogate momma, Peggy & sister Olivia arrived days before, along with cousins Lynn &

Rick d’Angona, who walked me down the aisle, all 3 from California! Then Alan’s siblings flew in from Texas, Florida and Connecticut and my brother Colin was there to run the music for us. The most special part of this day was that my mother Maureen, was able to bring my 91yr old Nana to celebrate, she is the Matriarch of our family, and was all smiles! My dear friend Denise Eliopulos, who owns Something Bleu Bridal, had made just for me the most beautiful southwest style dress from Olvi, I felt like a princess! Renewing our vows in the rolling hills of our farm, under two Hickory trees, along an old stone wall, with an alter Alan made out of a beam and salvage off of our farm. Alan arrived with our bridal party with our Horse JD and Carriage, while I rode in on my big girl Kayla. Patty married us again, followed by Denise’s husband Jim preforming a Native American wedding blessing. The day was the most magical day ever!

Our Story... When we met, little did we know just how close together we lived to each other …only 3 minutes away to be exact! We started things slowly, but it did not take long for our mutual respect and like of each other’s personalities to grow into love. Chris surprised me with the proposal while I was traveling on a work trip in Westchester, New York. I said yes (of course!!) I always thought being a wedding planner

114  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

would be a fantastic experience, and as I had been maid of honor in two of my close friends’ weddings, I was ready and eager to take on the task of my own wedding. Growing up, I always felt that the Hall of Springs in Saratoga emanated a historic charm and beauty that is hard surpassed. We ultimately knew this was the perfect location to share our special day with friends and family. An outdoor wedding under the portico fit our personalities perfectly and added to the ambiance we were hoping for. We decided to get married in the middle

of the portico, surrounding ourselves with love from our family and friends. Our wedding theme was classic romance. Though it seemed a very long planning process, not one lovely detail was left untouched. And in the end, the entire event was absolutely beautiful, and well worth it! Some of our unique favorites from the ceremony and reception included the string quartet, live band, back-lit drapes, cigar bar, sparklers and caricature artists!

Katee & Zach SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY

Our Story... Zach and I first met in the summer of 2009. We were neighbors on Broad Street in Plattsburgh where we both attended college. Our relationship began as friendship, but as the year went on, something just clicked between us. We kept in contact and began dating that summer. Fast forward to October 3, 2015, the day he proposed. It was a gloomy, rainy, chilly day in Niagara Falls. We bundled up and decided to ride the Maid of the Mist anyway! Since the weather was less than ideal, it was not too crowded of a ride which made it even more special. While aboard, Zach was anxiously trying to get me to come across to him, but I was reluctant to give up my spot against the railing. Finally I caved and went across to join him. He asked a stranger if he would take our picture. Before I knew it, he was down on his

116  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

knee. I was expecting him to propose that weekend as we had been talking a lot about marriage before this, but I was still so surprised - beyond ecstatic! No words can describe my feelings at that moment. The kind stranger recorded the proposal. We feel so lucky to have that special moment captured on film. I always knew I wanted a Fall wedding. It is my absolute favorite time of the year. Zach and I both love the outdoors, so we knew we wanted to incorporate that into our wedding day. We also wanted a unique experience for our guests. We researched so many venues online and looked at a few, but nothing gave us “that feeling.” We decided to check out Windham Mountain and we instantly fell in love. The beautiful drive to get there, the view of the mountains, the chairlift ride to the top, the newly renovated reception space…it was all just perfect. We booked it that day and the planning started.

Now I know with most girls it’s all about the dress, but for me, it was all about the shoes! I am a shoe-aholic and I always said I would wear Christian Louboutin’s on my wedding day. My mom bought me the most beautiful pair of Louboutin’s and I was in love. I ended up breaking my foot before my wedding, and although I wasn’t in a cast (thank GOD!!) I couldn’t wear my shoes. It was heartbreaking, but I got through it. Even though it wasn’t all about the dress for me, I did absolutely love my dress. As soon as I tried the Olvi gown on at Something Bleu Bridal in Saratoga, I knew it was THE DRESS! Soft, comfortable, romantic, sexy… everything I wanted to look like on my wedding day. I knew Zach would love it, too. Our wedding day was the best day ever (naturally!) We got so lucky with the weather. It was sunny and warm, the Fall colors were at their peak and the scenery was to die for …just perfect!

Kelly & Dave UPPER WEST SIDE, NYC

Our Story... Hi! We are Kelly and David Klee, although it is not too long since I was Kelly Shook, from Hudson. I work as a theatre director. Dave is a software engineer working in media. Dave and I met in NYC in December of 2011. We got engaged in Paris after dating for three years, and planned a wedding for our 4-year anniversary. When we looked for our venue, we fell in love with Crooked Lake House, but

118  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

they were booked on our chosen day. We had to decide what was more important to us, the date or the venue, and the venue won. We got married in November instead, so we searched for local vendors who focused on natural elements and bold color. One of my favorite parts of our décor was a display of apples at the front entrance that doubled as parting gifts for our guests. The arrangement was beautifully done by Maura Pulver of Saratoga Five Points, with apples Dave and I picked on a sunny afternoon before the

wedding at Phillips Orchard. It was a moment of calm before the wild weekend ahead, where he and I got to focus on each other and take a moment to be thankful for the journey ahead of us. The apples welcomed our guests into our wedding, drawing compliments from them all. Growing up in apple country, it was a personal touch that meant a lot to me. My biggest tip for future brides- The big day is about love. Find things you love, and share them with the people you love!

Be prepared to be tired! Even if you usually sleep well, like I do, you won't that week leading up to the wedding. There are so many people to see and events to attend to, and they will ALL be the most fun of your life- but exhausting!

Julia & Jess SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY

Our Story... When people ask how we fell in love, we laugh and say, “It was love at fourth sight”. Because, it took us a while to realize our serendipitous run-ins weren’t coincidental…they were fate. We first met in 2008 working summer jobs at Brookside Nursery in Ballston Spa. But, after some embarrassing interactions, we went our separate ways. Repeat the same story in 2009

120  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

with some flirting, but still, nothing happened. In between, like a true 21st century romance, we exchanged some late night Facebook messages that we’d like to pretend never happened. It wasn’t until the summer of 2011 that we finally had a “romantic” evening on Caroline Street (over a few PBR tall boys). From there, it was love. We spent the next five years learning how to be each other’s best friends. With plenty of right and wrong turns along the way, we began to define the comfortable, private

life we share together. And with each fear overcome, every dream shared, we fell deeper and deeper in love. Our story is far from picture perfect. Instead, it’s our version as only we can be –genuine with a touch of laughable charm. On November 25th, we celebrated our love and vowed in front of our dearest friends and family to continue our journey as true partners – never afraid because we’ll always be together.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

Julia is a writer and she consciously selected each letter, reading, and song to truly reflect the love she feels with Jesse. As she walked down the aisle the words, "And my darling I love you, and I always will" played. During the ceremony, a reading from Earnest Hemingway shared, "When we were together, we were never alone." And later they danced to the words, "Take my hand, take my whole life too, for I can't help falling in love with you." As Pinterest starts to feel overwhelming and you're bombarded with advice from every person you meet. Remember – planning a wedding is a vulnerable time for your relationship and the perfect dress won't make you love each other any more. Use the time of your engagement to practice being a good partner, defining how you'll love each other, and working together to understand what "We" will look like after you say, "I Do." This is what a wedding is about. Cake toppers can wait.

Liz & Brad

SYRACUSE, NY

Our Story... Liz and I first began dating when we were in high school. After graduation, we attended colleges just a couple hours away. After finishing our undergraduate degrees, we moved to San Diego, CA to continue our education. Liz studied to become a holistic health practitioner, and I did biomedical post-baccalaureate work. We had an amazing time in California, but we were always New Yorkers at heart.

122  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

We moved back to New York so I could attend medical school, and it was much easier to plan a wedding while living close to friends and family. When it came time to decide the location for the ceremony and reception, having it in Saratoga was a priority. Liz had always imagined a winter wedding in Saratoga. When we went to Prime at Saratoga National, we knew it was exactly what we were looking for. It had room to fit our 150 plus guests for the ceremony plus a large reception area

where we could have our band, and the dance floor at center stage. We also knew that Prime had some of the best food that Liz and I had ever tasted. Mazzone Hospitality helped us plan every step of the way. We had such an amazing time, and everything went so smoothly (besides me forgetting my bowtie!) It was such an incredible night that exceeded our expectations.

Christina & Canaan BROOKLYN, NY

Our Story... Canaan and I met in the fall of 2012 in Buffalo, NY. Though I grew up in Clifton Park, and he in Lake George, it took moving to a new city and beginning dental school for us to cross paths. We officially met in anatomy lab, and while perhaps not the most romantic of beginnings, we had an instant connection. On July 24th 2014, after a day spent biking through wineries, we were engaged.

124  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

Organizing a wedding during dental school was challenging, but the help of our amazing families and vendors made planning as smooth as possible. We love Christmas, its meaning and how warm and joyful it is. Our extended family members live throughout the country, so we often aren’t able to celebrate the season with as many of them as we would like. We wanted our wedding to be a celebration that brought family together and had the spirit of a black tie Christmas party. We decided on a palette of

mixed metallic with a predominance of gold and black. Our signature drink was an almond old fashioned, and our cake was winter spice with lots of ginger and maple butter-cream. We had the most amazing day… from the beautiful ceremony at Glens Falls First Presbyterian to dancing all night at the Hall of Springs. Now, celebrating our first year anniversary, we look back and continue to be thankful for the many people who made our wedding (cliché or not) the best day of our lives!

Molly & Michael MALTA, NY

Our Story... Michael and I met while performing in a musical together in Schenectady. We were close friends for many years, sharing our love of theatre and music. In 2013 while working on another performance project together we began dating. On our wedding day we decided to have our first look at the Spa Little Theatre, a spot that was very important to both of us. I had the opportunity to perform in that space several times, and it was the place where Michael saw me for the very first time! He is a music teacher at Shenendehowa with a busy private vocal studio, I work for a local insurance company and perform professionally with Park Playhouse in Albany. We reside in Malta with our dog Pie.

Taylor & Matt BOSTON, MA

Our Story... Before Matthew and I met, we both worked for the same company, lived on the same street, and ran in similar circles of friends while living in Middletown, CT. It wasn’t until after I moved to Boston for a new job and came back to Connecticut for a party the next summer that we met for the first time. The coincidences surrounding our intertwined pasts, and seemingly opportunistic timing, made our

128  |  SARATOGA BRIDE | 2017

initial meeting even more magical. Eventually Matthew moved to Boston, where we still live today, and our relationship continued to blossom. After five years of dating, he proposed on our private gardenlevel patio in Back Bay while white rope lights lit the scene, red rose petals covered the ground, and wisps of snow flurries filled the air – as corny as it sounds, it was like a movie! Even though we lived in Boston, having the wedding in the Capital Region was the logical and heartfelt choice, with Matthew growing up

in Oswego and myself in Troy. After visiting many venues in the region, we decided upon The Glen Sanders Mansion for the reception given its unique history and the natural beauty of its surroundings. Our wedding day could not have been more beautiful and we were so thankful to all our vendors that helped make the day what it was. We were both just so appreciative of being able to spend that moment with our family and friends whom we love so much.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS

Make sure to take a moment right after the ceremony and right before the reception where it's just the two of you - they always say blink and it's over, so we appreciated having that moment where we high-fived and said "WE DID IT!"
