BALLSTON SPA — A Ballston Spa native, Brett Fraser, is fighting Cancer for a second time so on Jan. 20 his sister Dr. Marcie Fraser is hosting a fundraiser in his name. The fundraiser will take place at The Brickyard Tavern, a bar and grill located at 70 Milton Ave. in Ballston Spa. Dr. Fraser is a local health contributor for print and on television in the capital region.

Brett Fraser was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

in 2016. After an aggressive sixmonth treatment it went into remission but just a week ago he found out it had returned. His oncologist says he now needs advanced treatment. On Jan. 13 Fraser arrived at Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach to receive treatment; however the fees at the center are not covered by insurance.

“My oncologist told me that I would most likely have to return to chemo at some time because this type of cancer has no cure but can only be treated…

In December of 2018 I began to have problems of swelling in my

throat and had a needle biopsy done on Dec. 26, 2018. On Dec. 31, 2018 I received a call from The D’Amour Center for Cancer Care and was told the cancer is back.

The time between my last chemo treatment and the cancer’s return has been less than 2 years,” Fraser says on a GoFundMe launched to help raise funds.

Fraser has three children, Brodie, Bella, and Jerimiah. His wife Gina and the three kids are currently in Massachusetts, where he now resides.

Local Soroptimists Grants Available to Fund Efforts that Help Women and Girls SARATOGA SPRINGS — Soroptimist International of Saratoga County (SISC) has announced the availability of $24,000 in grant funding for organizations that serve the needs of women and girls in Saratoga County. These awards, given by the club each year, seek to improve the quality of life of women and girls in our local communities.

In 2018, SISC awarded grants to the following organizations for projects that realize SISC’s mission to assist women and girls: Ballston Area Community Center, Bridging People and Places, Camp Abilities, CAPTAIN Community Human Services, Dance Alliance, Fast Break Fund, Franklin Community Center, Hudson Crossing Park, Loose Change, Mother Susan Anderson Shelter, Pitney Meadows, Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, Saratoga Center for the

Family, Saratoga Foundation for Innovative Learning, Saratoga Regional YMCA, Saratoga Senior Center, Shelters of Saratoga, To Life!, Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park.

In order to qualify, candidate organizations must be in or serve the needs of citizens of Saratoga County. Consideration will be given to the number of people served.

Grants are typically awarded for programming, start-up, or capital projects. Individual endeavors such as pageants and competitions are not funded.

Photo Finish Exhibition to Open Jan. 20 at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame is presenting its inaugural Photo Finish juried photography exhibition. The new exhibition will be open to the public in the Museum’s von Stade Gallery on Jan. 20 and remain on display through March 10.

The Museum received 159 photos by 83 photographers from 17 states and two Canadian provinces from the call for submissions announced in the summer of 2018. Amateur and professional photographers could submit up to two photographs for consideration and were encouraged to be as creative as possible with their submissions.

The only requirement was that

each submitted photograph must relate to the sport of thoroughbred racing in America.

A panel of judges representing both the racing and arts communities selected 45 photographs by 33 photographers for the exhibition.

All exhibited photographs will also be featured in an online exhibition for the Museum website (www.racingmuseum.org) that will debut after the von Stade exhibition opens to the public. An additional 26 photographs will be included as online-only images, bringing the total representation of Photo Finish to 59 photographers from 15 states and one Canadian province.

The Museum is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Richard E Hileman, age 35, Ballston Spa, was charged Jan. 11 with aggravated harassment in the second degree- misdemeanor.

Eric H. Irving, age 39, of Gansevoort, was charged Jan. 12 with Criminal Mischief in the fourth-degree, and criminal contempt in the second-degree, in connection with charges stemming from the alleged violation of a temporary order of protection, in Wilton.

Keegan A. Farrell, age 18, of Greenfield, was charged Jan. 10 with tampering with

physical evidence – a felony, in connection with a Christmas night shooting that occurred on Hyspot Road. Farrell is accused of removing the shotgun involved in the shooting from the scene after the incident took place. The weapon has not been recovered at this time and the investigation into its whereabouts continues, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

William M. Allen, age 24, of Greenfield, was charged with felony assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon a misdemeanor, following an investigation into a Christmas night shooting, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. An 18-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the upper arm after a shotgun was accidentally discharged within the residence. The victim was treated for a non-life-threatening injury at Albany Medical Center and released.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — William (Billy) T. Flanders passed away on Friday, January 11, 2019. Born January 17, 1979, he was the son of Gail and the late Gilbert W. Flanders who passed away in 2004.

Billy was a man of many friends. If you knew him, you knew he was always good for a laugh, a funny joke and he made you feel special. Each of us shared an inside joke with him, probably more than one.

Billy was a hard worker having spent the last 14 years working at Scottie’s truck stop in Wilton.

He shared a lot of memories and jokes with everyone from co-workers to trucker drivers.

They all loved him and his sense of humor. He thoroughly enjoyed sports too, especially the Knicks, Raiders, Yankees, and whatever team was playing against the Cowboys that week.

Billy took pride in displaying affection for all of his family. He was a great friend who was always there to listen, offer advice and if needed, play a competitive game of Phase 10. He was forever grateful to his mom and was her number one fan. Billy will forever be

cherished in the lives of the loved ones he leaves behind. In addition to his mother, Gail R. Flanders, survivors include his two brothers Gilbert and Rodney Flanders and his sister Shirley Flanders; his 6 nieces and nephews and 7 greatnieces and nephews.

Family and friends are all welcome to a celebration of Billy’s life from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

2019 Service Academy Nominations Hail from Saratoga County CAPITAL REGION — On Jan. 9 U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today announced her nominations for candidates from the Capital Region to two of the nation’s leading service institutions: the United States Military and Merchant Marine Academies. Committee to Hold Meeting Seeking Public Input to Create City Vision Map SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Open Space Advisory Committee invites the public to participate in an evening Natural Resource Inventory Workshop 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Dutcher Community Room at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St. To help the city create a Natural Resource Inventory

(NRI), the OSAC is soliciting your participation and opinions about the future of open space and natural resources in Saratoga Springs.

Specifically, at the Jan. 31 workshop, the public will engage in activities that will help the committee shape two different components of the NRI: creating a Vision Map of the most valued places and spaces in the city of Saratoga Springs,

and refining and improving the committee’s preliminary list of priority issues relating to future planning for the protection of our natural resources and open spaces.

Members of the Open Space Advisory Committee as well as city staff will be in attendance to present materials and facilitate the discussion. The event is free and open to the public.

“This series—on topics such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, innovation, and energy— works to position the region to spur economic development by leveraging applications of emerging technologies to practical business challenges,” Madigan said, in a statement.

Marty Vanags, president of Saratoga County prosperity Partnership, and one of the sponsoring organizations of the event, points to things like the Apple Watch, robot vacuums and Alexa as things inside the home that depict AI is already here.

“On my phone I have The Weather Channel App. Algorithms are generating information and pretty darn accurate information about what the weather is going to be like into the future, from temperatures on an hourly basis to how much and where snow is going to fall,” Vanags says. “I was at a consumer electronics show last week and Samsung has something called The Hub - this giant screen on the refrigerator that organizes your family activities, totally interactive.

movies. “It may not be an exact fit, but the technology, that algorithm will learn over time,” Vanags says.

“Machine learning, which is part of Artificial Intelligence. It keeps re-defining until it really begins to know and understand what it is you like.”

It is anticipated that the deployment of 5G will lead to the mainstreaming of autonomous, or self-driving vehicles.

Asked whether there may be a danger with all the gathering of data that may lead to humans not being exposed to new things, or perhaps other downfalls, Vanags says, “technology needs to have limits and controls, just like anything.

It’s an interesting conundrum.

We like our technology, we like our conveniences and at the same time we don’t want to be felt imposed upon by companies that are using that technology.”

An “Open Letter” penned in 2015 and signed by the likes of Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, the late Stephen Hawking and thousands of others, the importance of focused research to maximize the societal benefit of AI was stressed. “Our AI systems must do what we want them to do,” the Open Letter states. “The potential benefits are huge… the eradication of disease and poverty are not unfathomable. Because

of the great potential of AI, it is important to research how to reap its benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls.”

The future impact of AI is also anticipated to cause the elimination of some jobs - taxi drivers and truck drivers as examples among them - when self-driving vehicles become mainstream.

“It’s hard to predict. I’m not predicting this, but some people have predicted that you will go to a restaurant and essentially robots will take your order,” Vanags says.

“I don’t know, I think the human

element is still important and I like my waiters and waitresses at Cantina, so I don’t see that necessarily, but there could be applications in AI that predict what I might order, an Artificial Intelligence application that actually generates the food that I’m going to eat, but there are a lot of costs involved and I think that’s well into the future.”

Visitation Guidelines Implemented at Saratoga Hospital to Combat Flu

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Dec. 28 Saratoga Hospital announced that visitation guidelines are in effect as of Dec. 31, at several regional hospitals to further protect patients from influenza and other infectious diseases. New York State Department of Health establishes the guidelines after determining that the flu is now prevalent in certain communities.

A maximum of two visitors will be allowed in a patient’s room under these guidelines.

In addition, visitors with rash, respiratory symptoms or fever, sore throat, cough and shortness of breath are not allowed to visit patients and children 12 and under are also now not allowed to visit patients. These visitor restrictions are implemented every year.

frame. Most patients are over 65,” said Erin Beck, Senior Infection Prevention Specialist at Saratoga Hospital. She adds that the increase in flu patients typically occurs at the end of December.

Other hospitals implementing the restrictions include Albany Med, Columbia Memorial Hospital and Saratoga Hospital. Hospitals that had already implemented the restrictions include St. Peter’s Health Partners acute care hospitals including Albany Memorial

“The flu either shifts or drifts and if it shifts it can cause severe pandemics but that’s very rare; this year it appears to have just shifted,” Hayes said.

“It’s probably a little bit early to say what the impact of the flu will be on the community. It’s been wide-spread for probably about a month now and I think the early indications so far are that it’s not as severe as it was last year. My gut reaction is that this particular type of Influenza A has not made a traumatic shift,” Hayes added.

The hospitals also are urging all visitors to use hand-washing stations before entering and upon leaving a patient’s room. Hand sanitizers are available at many hospital entrances and at many other locations throughout these hospitals, including the doorways of many patient rooms. Some hospitals have special care units or physical layouts which may have additional visitation restrictions or modifications.

Hospital officials advised that it is still important to get the flu vaccine, as it offers protection against other circulating strains and will reduce the likelihood of severe illness.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Receives Grant for Farm-to-School Program

BALLSTON SPA — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County is a recipient of $36,226 in state funding to support a Farm-to-School initiative.

The money awarded to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, located at 50 West High St. in Ballston Spa, will be used to build a wash, cure and storage facility and create an agricultural education program for students in Saratoga Central School District that will include farm experience field trips to increase awareness of locallysourced food.

According to Diane Whittman, Food and Nutrition Educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension Saratoga County, the grant was applied to in partnership with Pitney Meadows Community Farms, Saratoga Springs City School District and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County. She says nearly half of the money will go to capital improvements at Pitney

Meadows so the wash, cure and storage facility can be built onsite.

The partnership has plans to introduce the program by spring of this year. This includes having produce ready to be harvested by spring, and some students, from the entire district, harvesting them. Whittman says there will be some in-class education about agriculture in Saratoga County and food sourcing.

The Farm-to-School program increases the volume and variety of locally grown and produced food in schools. It aims to improve student health and to educate young people about agriculture.

In addition it provides new markets for New York’s farmers.

The program also supports the expansion of the NY Thursdays Program, a school meal initiative that uses local, farm-fresh foods on Thursdays throughout the school year. $1.5 million in awards was granted to support Farm-toSchool programs across New York. The funding has been awarded to 18 projects and educational organizations that

serve students in Kindergarten through Grade 12, and will benefit over 420,000 students.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County received $93,582 in awards and Capital Roots Inc., a non-profit organization based in Troy, received $97,220.

The Farm-to-School Program is part of the State’s efforts to

increase the amount of fresh, local foods served in schools and to connect New York’s farmers to new markets. It is a component of the Governor’s “No Student Goes Hungry” initiative. The initiative is a program developed to provide students of all ages, backgrounds, and financial situations access to healthy, locally-sourced meals from

kindergarten through college.

“The long-term goal is to make Pitney Meadows Farm a farm-to-school hub. Any local farms that might be willing to sell to the school could deliver their produce to Pitney Meadows Farm for storage, and then from there the school district could order,” Whittman said.

Adirondack Trust Company Re-Opens New Location After Two Years WILTON — On Jan. 7 the Adirondack Trust Company (ATC) celebrated the grand re-opening and ribbon cutting of its newly re-built Wilton branch.

The office is located at 650 Maple Ave. in Wilton. The Branch also received a Citation from New York Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner. This adds to the 12 existing branches in Saratoga and Warren Counties.

The branch burned down in March 2017 and was redesigned by the architectural firm Phinney Design Group. The interior was designed by Ed Rovetto of Rovetto Design and features a dynamic, curved teller station; high ceilings; exposed wood; and a full-wall

rendering of the Adirondacks at sunset by photographer Jonathan Zaharek. Michael Phinney of Phinney Design was the principal architect, and Munter Enterprises built the Branch.

“It’s great to be back! We’re very excited about our new Wilton Branch, and we invite everyone in the community to come and visit,” said Charles V. Wait Jr., Vice President of Adirondack Trust Company.

“The Branch has been designed specifically to help us serve our customers even better than before, with new technology as well as a beautiful interior and exterior that evokes the strength of the Adirondacks.”

The new branch is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bank is offering re-opening specials through Jan. 22.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Heritage Area Visitor Center’s Mitten Tree Program has collected 350 pieces of winter wear for their annual Mitten Tree Program. The program began in late November and ran through December.

This holiday season the Saratoga Heritage Area Visitor Center invited the local

community to donate new and handmade hats, mittens, scarves and cold weather wear to hang on our seasonal tree. Participants placed their donations on the official Mitten Tree in the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center located at 297 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. In early January, all donated items are sorted and distributed to

regional charitable organizations that supply those in need. The items were distributed to Captain Community Human Services, Franklin Community Center, the Greater Galway Food Pantry and Shelters of Saratoga.

Todd Shimkus, President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce I don’t know who the 2,000 people were that took part in this survey. But let’s assume that it was a valid poll and the results are accurate.

The poll determined that the top three New Year’s Resolutions for 2019 are: 1. Diet or eat healthier 2. Exercise more 3. Lose weight So if these results are accurate, there are lots of people out there with resolutions or personal goals

related to health and wellness.

The trouble with resolutions, however, is not making them. It is keeping them.

Sure everyone wants to eat healthier. Who doesn’t want to exercise more or lose weight.

Once again, we’re told perhaps 60 percent of people make a resolution but just 8 percent keep them.

So what can we do to make this the year that our own health and wellness matters.

I’m told that writing down a goal with a way it can be measured and a time by when it will be accomplished helps. You can post this goal somewhere so that you see it every day or every week.

This might help make sure you are scheduling time to get it done.

Sharing such a goal or resolution with others also improves the likelihood you’ll succeed.

Maybe the people you tell your goal or resolution to will give

you advice or feedback that helps you. They might even decide to do it with you. And if they do join you, then you’ll have someone to share your success with when you do get it done.

So now if you made a resolution or wrote down a goal that involved diet or eating healthier; exercising more; or losing weight. We can help too!

No, the Chamber does not have a miracle diet or weight loss program. Sorry.

But we do have our fifth Annual Health and Wellness Week coming up February 3 through February 9.

Since

we live far from the road, our cats are allowed to go outside all summer long. During winter...and especially this winter, they are trapped inside. They’ll whine and complain but we won’t let them out...they have no idea how cold it is out there. Bug especially gets a little, well, buggy.

Neither of them shows any interest in chewing on the houseplants which is nice. In addition to being a jerk, Bug has a habit in winter of licking things.

Not to excess, but he seems to enjoy licking the dust off the legs of the propane fireplace (they aren’t hot) or a chair leg. I use this behavior as my cue to provide them with some grass to eat.

Among the new seed packs that arrive at the garden center you’ll be able to find some cat grass. Often this is a blend of

grasses that cats enjoy. Oats, wheat, rye and barley make up the blend. In the past I’ve grown the oats for them and they like it.

I decided to give the blend a try to see how that goes over.

It’s well known that cats eat grass. Most often the eating of grass is followed by the cat throwing up. A great many cat lovers have concluded that it is the grass that is making the cat sick.

This isn’t an illogical conclusion, but it is nonetheless incorrect.

Cats, in their native environment, will kill and eat small rodents like mice. They can’t digest mice hair and bones so they need to vomit to get rid of it. Cats also clean themselves with their tongues and end up swallowing a good bit of their own hair. This hair is also expelled through vomiting.

What does all this have to do with them eating grass? By eating

grass, cats are helping to induce their own vomiting to get rid of whatever is in their stomach that is causing their distress. In other words, if you see your cat eating grass, don’t stop it. The theory is that the grass induces vomiting since the cats can’t digest it, and it also makes the hair easier to expel. While cleaning up a bundle of grass and fur that your cat puked up isn’t pleasant, it is better than allowing those fur balls to create an intestinal blockage that requires a trip to the vet and, possibly, an expensive operation.

My cats don’t vomit after they nibble on the fresh shoots.

Clearly they enjoy it and I suspect there are more benefits for them.

They wouldn’t crave it if it wasn’t something they need once in a while in winter.

Starting cat grass is the simplest thing ever. Put some potting soil in a pot, scatter in a bunch of seeds, cover with a half inch of more soil and soak it well.

To hasten sprouting, I like to put the pots in a plastic bag (unsealed) until it sprouts. In a warm room, the seed will sprout in about 3 days...fast! I remove them from the bag once they sprout and find a sunny windowsill to help them grow a bit before I let the cats have it.

This is the challenging part since the cats love it and can usually find it before it is tall enough to make much of a meal. Bug managed to find the pot growing on an upper windowsill and decided that it was just the right size for a snack. Then he dove right in! Peep was more ladylike when given her share.

The packet contains plenty of seeds so I’ll start a couple of pots

a week for several weeks. This ensures a continuous supply for the rest of winter. The grass will re-grow two or three times after the cats nibble it down so don’t toss it after their first “munch in.” If you have indoor cats, you should consider growing grass for them year round.

Skidmore Wins Gold in Culinary Competition

Swishes of oranges and yellows, dots of brown and stacks of frilly white spiraling strands graced the plates at Skidmore College last week.

They were entries in the 8th Annual American Culinary Federation (ACF) Competition held on Friday, Jan. 11 but would’ve fit in just as well at an art show.

“Everything is just so beautiful, I think its art,” said Ron Taylor, Skidmore’s Media Services Operations Coordinator.

STRESS & SURPRISES The competition — similar to the television series “Chopped” — challenged 10 four-person teams to use a “market basket” of surprise ingredients to create a salad or appetizer, a soup or dessert, an entrée and a buffet platter within a limited amount of time.

“It’s pure adrenaline. You’re excited but nervous and it’s hard to stay focused,” said Skidmore chef Joe Greco. This was his third year competing in the event, which is always a confidence-boosting experience for his team, he said.

Skidmore earned gold with the highest total points for the sixth consecutive year. Cornell University, which placed second in the point tally, also earned gold, while the other teams were awarded silver medals for their work during the event.

COMRADERY AMIDST COMPETITION “It’s an experience of a lifetime,” said SUNY Albany chef Christine Bennett.

With a wide smile and a sigh of relief, her teammate Tara Nunez joins her. Taking off her crisp white chef ’s hat and untying her apron, she talks of how fun it is to meet new people, discuss new ideas and experiment with unusual ingredients.

“You learn little things from each team. It’s very nice,” said Bennett.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Skidmore’s Dining Services organizes the annual competition which gets better and better each year, agreed the competitors and the judges.

“We are extremely proud of our gold medal and how the Skidmore team worked together to earn it.

We were also pleased to hear from the judges that this year’s competition was the best yet — with some of the tastiest food. We look forward to raising the bar again next year,” said Mark Miller, Skidmore’s Dining Services Director.

The two-day conference also included a screening of “The Bullish Farmer” documentary, a discussion with Skidmore alumnus John Ubaldo, owner of John

Boys Farm in Cambridge, and several food preparation presentations.

The panel of judges said the culinary competition expectations presentation really helped to improve this years’ experience for everyone.

“Sometimes I learn more than I teach. Like, I wouldn’t have eaten yesterday because there were some things today I wanted to eat a lot more of,” said judge Victor Sommo.

Competitions like this one are a reflection of a changing attitude toward food. “Things are changing when it comes to food and people are thinking more about what they consume. They want food with flavor that excites them at school and in their own dorm room. It’s the demand for it that drives it. You have to change with the times. Change is inevitable,” said SUNY Albany chef Jeff Rayno.

Vocal Scholarship Competition BURNT HILLS — The Burnt Hills Oratorio Society (BHOS) under the direction of Dr. William Jon Gray, will hold its 22nd annual vocal scholarship competition for high school seniors. Two scholarships will

be awarded to the top two competitors along with an opportunity to sing in a BHOS concert.

Applicants need not plan a career in music, but the scholarships are intended to facilitate the

continued study of singing in college. This year’s audition will be held on March 31 at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Burnt Hills.

New SRO Officer Starting in February SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Board of Education will be voting on an additional School Resource Officer that will be based out of Maple Avenue Middle School, but also covering Dorothy Nolan and Greenfield Elementary Schools on Jan. 24.

Saratoga Parents for Safer Schools (SPFSS) released the following statement on the matter:

“While we appreciate the administration’s attempt to address our school safety concerns, the addition of one SRO for a district with 6,000 students, is woefully inadequate.

Our organization will not accept the district’s token attempt to address the concerns of parents and community members in Saratoga Springs. We will now

turn our attention toward the school board election in May.” SPFSS has been trying to find qualified members of the community interested in running for the school board; they have also been working to build out the campaign infrastructure required. In the next few weeks the organization plans to announce its candidates and begin fundraising.

January Parent University Programs SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Jan. 22 at Maple Avenue Middle School Large Group Instruction Room at 6:30 p.m., the Screenagers film will be showing. The snow date is Jan. 23.

Screenagers probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director's own,

and depicts messy struggles, over social media, video games, academics and Internet addiction. Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists, solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.

College Assistant Professor Aarathi Prasad, Ph.D will share insight and answer questions about data management and privacy practices when using Internet-connected devices.

Host Families for High School Exchange Students Arriving in August SARATOGA COUNTY — A nonprofit organization, CIEE, is seeking host families in Saratoga Springs and the surrounding areas for high school exchange students that will be arriving in August.

Founded in 1947, CIEE is the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization, serving 300 U.S.

colleges and universities, 1,000 U.S. high schools, and more than 35,000 international exchange students each year. Students live as typical American teenagers, attending a U.S. high school, living with an American host family, and participating in extracurricular activities and sports. During their stay, students also give back to their host communities through many

volunteering and community service opportunities.

Through its USA high school program, CIEE provides lifechanging cultural exchanges that help students, families, and schools gain new perspectives and develop lifelong relationships that cross borders and cultures.

Ballston Spa School District Enrolling for UPK Program BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District is currently enrolling students for its Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) program for the 2019 through 2020 school year.

An eligible child is a child who resides within the school district and who is four years of age on or before Dec. 1. A child who is ageeligible to attend kindergarten is not eligible for the UPK program.

Distiller Brings “Spirit of the Grain” to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market Lincoln Baths Building at the Spa State Park Saturdays | 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

It’s 9 a.m. at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. Not exactly “happy hour.”

But for Matt Jager and the crew who bring vodka, straight bourbon, rye, wheat, and single malt whiskeys from Yankee Distillers to the market, that’s the point. These drinks are not meant to be downed in a hurry but instead sipped slowly.

Such beverages, known as spirits, begin from grains. As such, says Jager, who co-owns Yankee Distillers with Scott Luning, they are “the spirit of the grain.”

A distilled spirit is an alcoholic beverage produced by allowing a fermented liquid to turn to vapor and then back to liquid. Grains are cooked down to a mash. During this process,

carbohydrates are broken down to simple sugars. Sugars turn to alcohol as yeast eats away at them, creating fermentation. The resulting liquid is then distilled and aged.

Jager began learning to distill spirits after completing a master’s in business administration. Yankee Distillers opened three years ago in Clifton Park. Its whiskies have been in barrels aging for most of that time. As a result, last year marked their first significant rollout. The process, says Jager, has taught him patience: “I learn new things every day.”

and aged grains in small batch processes through the late 18th and 19th centuries, creating a vibrant craft industry. Prohibition laws of the 1920s wiped that industry out. In 2005, however, new state laws were passed that are helping distilleries make a comeback.

For Jager, distillation allows one to experience “the grain in its purest essence.”

For him, that essence involves learning more about the grains and their origins, how they were grown, harvested, stored, and ultimately converted to the spirits that one enjoys now.

State laws require 75 percent of farm distillers’ raw ingredients to be of New York origin. Yankee Distillers uses 100 percent New York grown corn, rye, wheat, and malted grains in its products, and Jager dreams of operating a farm that would grow these crops itself.

Apple Crisp Cocktail INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 2 oz. fresh apple cider*

• Cinnamon and sugar mixture

• 2 oz. Yankee Distillers bourbon whiskey*

• Ice

• Dehydrated apple slice*

• 1/4 oz. caramel syrup

• Cinnamon stick

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Rim a rocks glass with cinnamon and sugar and fill 2/3 with ice.

2. In a cocktail shaker, combine 1/4 oz. caramel syrup, 2 oz. fresh apple cider, and 2 oz. Yankee Distillers bourbon whiskey with ice.

3. Shake to combine, and strain into rocks glass, right up to the cinnamon and sugar rim.

4. Garnish with a dehydrated apple slice and a cinnamon stick.

my Foodie Friends. As we progress into the month of January, the challenge becomes holding onto and maintaining those New Years Resolutions. For Paula and me it is about making better and healthier food choices. There is more than one way to eat healthfully and everyone has their own eating style. Making healthier choices can reflect your preferences, culture, traditions, and budget. Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health, and boosting your mood. Create an eating style that can improve your health now and in the future by making small changes over time.

Consider changes that reflect your personal preferences, culture and traditions. Think of each change as

a “win” as you build positive habits and find solutions that reflect your healthy eating style.

Chicken Zoodle Soup

Here is a warm and comforting soup recipe using “zoodles.”

INGREDIENTS • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 cup diced onions • 1 cup diced celery • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 5 (14.5 oz.) cans low-sodium chicken broth • 3/4 pound cooked chicken breast, cut into bite sized pieces

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Saute onion, celery, and garlic in hot oil until just tender, about 5 minutes.

2. Pour chicken broth into the pot; add carrots, chicken, basil, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the broth to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer mixture until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes.

3. Divide zucchini ‘noodles’ between six soup bowls; ladle broth mixture over the ‘noodles.’

Understanding Theatrical Costume Interpretations of Early 1800s Clothing Discover the challenge and joy of designing costumes for the Capital Repertory production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley.

The play’s time period, 1813, is a transitional period between the Empire and Romantic eras in costume history where we see such changes as the earlier

simplicity of plain, light-colored muslin dresses replaced by vibrant colors and whimsical trims.

SPAC ANNOUNCES 2019 CLASSICAL SEASON: New York City Ballet Returns July 16-20 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) announced its 2019 lineup which features the summertime return of the New York City Ballet, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

The New York City Ballet Residency (July 16 – 20) once again features four distinct programs including the story ballet Coppélia, which was premiered at SPAC, an evening dedicated to Balanchine and Tschaikovsky, and a program showcasing three SPAC Premieres by 21st century choreographers, highlighted by Kyle Abraham’s The Runaway, which fuses modern and classical technique and an eclectic soundtrack mixing composer Nico Muhly, singer James Blake, and hiphop artists Jay-Z and Kanye West. The annual New York City Ballet Gala, on Saturday, July 20, will showcase George Balanchine’s Apollo, Christopher Wheeldon’s This Bitter Earth and a new piece by NYCB Resident Choreographer and Soloist Justin Peck.

The Philadelphia Orchestra’s three-week residency (July 31 – Aug. 17) will be highlighted by 19 SPAC premieres. Back by popular demand will be SPAC’s “Cinema Series,” as the orchestra accompanies, live to picture, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert (Aug. 3); Disney Pixar’s Up in Concert (Aug. 10) and Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights in Concert (Aug. 14). The season will, once again, showcase two weeks under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra and of The Metropolitan Opera. Nézet-Séguin will conduct the closing night performance of Mozart’s Requiem.

The Orchestra’s 2019 season will also feature a line-up of acclaimed and emerging artists appearing at SPAC for the first time. MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT COMING TO PROCTORS JAN. 23-24 SCHENECTADY — Monty Python’s Spamalot arrives at Proctors, 7:30 p.m.

The outrageous musical comedy is lovingly ripped off from the film classic “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

Monty Python’s Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail. Monty Python’s Spamalot features a chorus line of dancing divas, flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and showstopping musical numbers. The Broadway production won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs.

This brand-new production is directed and choreographed

by Sam Viverito and musical supervision is by Steven M. Bishop.

HMT: Open Auditions for Barefoot In The Park SARATOGA SPRINGS — Home Made Theater announces open auditions for their April/ May production of “Barefoot In The Park,” by Neil Simon, directed by Michael McDermott.

Hattie’s Mardi Gras Soiree

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Hundreds attended Hattie’s Restaurant’s annual Mardi Gras party Saturday, Jan. 12, at Canfield Casino in Congress Park.

The event raised a gross total of more than $150,000, the proceeds of which will support Jake’s Help From Heaven, a non-profit founded in 2011 and dedicated to supporting individuals with multiple medical challenges and disabilities. The organization is rooted in the memory of Jake Straughter, who died in 2010 at the age of four. In the words of his family, Jake was a brave boy who persevered with strength and grace, teaching all who were lucky enough to know him many life lessons about courage, bravery and resiliency.

Hattie’s annual Mardi Gras event – which was staged for

the last time in 2019 – had each year selected a local nonprofit as the recipient of the proceeds raised from the soiree. At this year’s gathering at the Canfield Casino, guests enjoyed the culinary expertise of Chef Jasper Alexander, danced the night away to the sounds of Garland Nelson and Soul Session, and took part in a silent auction of unique items donated by many local businesses.

Hattie’s Restaurant was established on the city’s west side in 1938 by Hattie Gray, a Louisiana born woman with an entrepreneurial vision and a winning fried chicken recipe.

When Urban Renewal swept through the city’s west side in the 1960s, the eatery relocated to Phila Street. Jasper and Beth Alexander have owned Hattie’s since 2001.

OF THE WEEK At 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, Marcus Ruggiero leads the Side Show Gypsy Band (Guitar- Joe Mele / Bass -James Cappello / Keys -Sonny Speed) in the staging of an Opening Night concert of a 10-show local tour. The band’s tour will feature tunes performed as an expression of “purposefully letting the songs form naturally in front of a live audience,” Ruggiero says. In other words: providing a chance for The Magic to happen.

Following the 10-show tour, the band will hit the recording studio to commit the tunes to history.

I’ve been on the hardcourts for many years as a player and a coach with the majority of my coaching career of 40 plus years were at Saratoga. I have coached boys and girls and have seen the game change by leaps and bounds. As a kid, when I was a player, basketball was more of a deliberately controlled game; most of the time we would set up the offense and execute. There was no need of urgency to beat the clock except for certain situations that usually evolved through the game’s progression. Then along came the three point arch, an off-shoot of the now defunct American Basketball Association (ABA), followed by the shot clock in part to speed up the game, first with the women/girls and then the men/boys. I’m putting it mildly when I say that those two changes have had a profound effect on the way the game is played in today’s world of scholastic and intercollegiate basketball, and I believe it’s a good thing!

Those profound changes have given me a new perspective as a basketball coach. Watching the boys of Saratoga Springs High School run the floor is a real treat for me. I do like the “uptempo” style the Blue Streaks play as it’s exciting to watch and satisfying to see how these kids look for one another. Every team has a catalyst and Aidan Holmes is definitely the giddy-up-and-go man for the

blue and white. He’s the fuse that sparks the team as they play as an explosive attack on both ends of the court. Aidan’s dad, Kevin, played for me during the late 80’sthat’s when Kevin, as a senior, along with his team made it to the final four of the state tournament.

Aidan’s grandfather, Rick Holmes, and I go way back into the Mechanicville High School history book of the early 1960’sthat’s when we played using peach baskets...not really, just kidding.

This past Tuesday night the Blue Streaks had a big game with Suburban Council rival, the Bethlehem Eagles. Both teams entered the game unbeaten and the Eagles, who started five seniors, came out with the blocks on fire. Bethlehem made 11 threepointers, demonstrating what it means to have a home court advantage. If there’s any irony that comes with basketball, here the leading scorer of the game was BCHS’s senior guard Pat Ryan, scoring 20 points in his first game of the season where he had double figures and previously only scoring one three-pointer the entire season until this game. Ryan netted six three-pointers on Tuesday with three in the first quarter.

Saratoga hung in there the first half with Aidan Holmes fueling the way. Bethlehem ended the half up 37 to 34, off a buzzer beater three-pointer from the Eagles’ Jake Laclair. In the third quarter, the Eagles came out fired up to increase their lead to 15.

Saratoga was caught in a whirlwind of raining jumpshots as Bethlehem netted 25 points to Toga’s 16.

The atmosphere in the BCHS gym was electric with the student bodies of both schools going at each other with cheers and jeers, but it was all in good spirit. As junior Aidan Holmes kept Saratoga in striking distance throughout the first half, senior Will Fox picked it up in the second half to keep up a good fight for the Blue and White Streaks, they scored 16 and 18

respectively. Six foot eight senior Nate Chudy scored 13 with 8 rebounds for the Blue Streaks.

The majority of the game was well officiated, with three refs assigned to this game. Both teams displayed good aggressive man-to-man defense throughout the game with Saratoga moving into some zone during the second half. Numerous times both teams applied full court pressure in the progression of the game.

Coach Matt Usher, who was an outstanding player himself for the Blue Streaks class of 2000, played for former SSHS varsity coach Mitch Snyder. Matt and his staff have the Streaks playing an impressive style of the running game, with the “bigs” running the floor like guards, Toga is led by 6’8” senior center/forward Nate Chudy, son of Robin Chudy; 6’ junior, Aidan Holmes; 6’1” junior, Aidan Dagostino; 6’5” sophomore, Mike Rogan; 6’6” senior, Will Fox; 6’1”senior, Marcus Davis; 6’3” sophomore, Chris Dufort; 6’ senior, Charlie Beck; 6’2” junior, Dan Spillane; 6’2” senior, Dan Signor; 6’2” senior, Graham Patton; 6’ junior, Bryce Emery; and 6’1” senior, Justin Kislowski.

The week before against gutsy CBA on Tuesday, January 8, CBA was led by their junior point guard Jordan King, an impressive player in his own right. In the first half,

CBA’s veteran coach Dave Doemel had the Brothers executing at both ends of the floor. As the buzzer went off, after the first eight minutes, CBA was up by by 12.

The Streaks cut that lead to one point as King scored on a driving layup to make it 26 to 23.

Coach Usher utilizes a defensive strategy coming out of a man-to-man defense in the first half to a 1-2-1-1 full court zone press combined with an extended 1-2-2 half court zone trap. This strategy turned the game around against CBA with the zone strategy taking the King factor away from the CBA offense. At the finish it was Saratoga 63, CBA 53.

Friday, January 11, the Streaks traveled to pesky Niskayuna with the Blue and White leading duo of Chudy and Holmes. Saratoga defeated the Silver Warriors 67 to 54 with Chudy scoring 24 and Holmes 19. Nisky tried a special defense in the second half hoping to neutralize Nate Chudy using a diamond and one, which is a 1-2-1 zone (diamond shape) and putting man-to-man defense on Chudy. At first it had some effect, but Aidan Holmes turned on his offensive magic in the third quarter with 11 points, including three threepointers, negating a Nisky run that closed in on Saratoga’s lead 44 to 37. Holmes’ hot hand turned into a 10-2 run with plenty of support

from the boys inside, as senior 6’6” Will Fox scored 10 and some key rebounds while 6’5” sophomore Mike Rogan netted 9.

High school basketball is a sport of peaks and valleys with the human element always part of the game. Going unbeaten in such a long season is not an easy task, practically impossible. Losing to Bethlehem, in my opinion, will not hurt the Blue Streaks because losing can actually be a positive teaching tool in the preparation of the remaining second half of play.

The Blue Streaks are impressive to watch: I like the way they play and their aggressive style fits their personnel with much credit going to head coach Matt Usher, and his assistants Jason Armstrong, Kevin Himmel Wright, Jim Murphy, and JV /assistant coach Geoff Loiacono.

The Blue Streaks are just barely past the halfway mark of their season at 11 and 1. The remaining schedule is as follows: Jan. 18 at Schenectady, Jan. 22 Green Tech at home, Jan. 25 Troy at home, Jan. 29 at Shenendehowa, Jan. 31 Columbia at home, Feb 5 at Colonie, Feb. 8 at Averill Park, Feb. 12 Niskayuna at home (senior night), Sectional playoffs to be determined In the Suburban Council there are no easy takes, it’s a very tough league with the majority of the larger schools of Secton II where any team can present a challenge.

for Saratoga TODAY PART 2 OF A 3 PART SERIES THE FABULOUS FIFTIES New Jersey racing took off like the great thoroughbreds that would soon race there. By the mid-1950s, the attendance and mutuel handle at Garden State Park was almost on a par with Belmont and Jamaica.

Monmouth Park and Atlantic City were not far behind. The racing dates were a perfect meld for success.

Garden State ushered the season in with four weeks of racing in May, wrapping it up on Memorial Day. When it started to heat up on the Jersey shore, Monmouth Park got the nod. The prime dates fit right into the vacation season. When Monmouth closed in mid-August, it was time for Atlantic City to showcase its version of Jersey Racing. The meeting raced into the first week of October. Then it was back to Garden State for the final month of racing.

The three owners were faced with a task of introducing a signature race, a main event that would bring the country’s top racehorses to their tracks. Gene Mori went all in. In 1953 he introduced the Garden State Futurity, a race for two-year-old colts.

In an era that 100,000-dollar stakes races were about as rare as a bottle of 1928 Lafite, Mori offered a purse of 300,000 dollars. The move was brilliant. Every October it would bring the best of the juveniles in training to take a shot at the largest purse offered on the American horse racing scene.

At the Jersey Shore, Amory Haskell took the only route a gentleman of his stature could envision. He offered a handicap race at the classic distance of one and one quarter miles for threeyear olds and upwards. The purse was set at 100,000 dollars and was named the Monmouth Handicap.

It was a resounding success. The event almost overnight became one of the most important destinations on the summer racing calendar.

Now it was John Kelly’s turn.

Turf racing was in its infancy. On the eastern seaboard only, Miami’s Hialeah Park and Laurel Racetrack in Maryland offered quality racing on that surface. Soon after Kelly opened Atlantic City, he embarked on the construction of what was to be the finest grass surface in the United States. Kelly’s turf course made its debut during the 1948 season. It was an immediate fan favorite. Kelly needed a race to highlight his new work of art. In 1953 he did just that.

He introduced The United Nation’s Handicap. The event was to be contested at one and three sixteenths of a mile and the purse was tagged at the magical number of 100,000 dollars. Kelly had his signature race. The great turf champion Round Table took the event on two occasions. The immortal Dr. Fager would also have his name engraved on the stunning trophy. Kelly had made the perfect choice. The race became synonymous with world class turf racing.

The Golden Triangle now had important races on its calendar that had championship quality.

The time had come. In 1957 three great racehorses were about to converge on Garden State Park to settle Horse of the Year honors. It would be Gene Mori’s finest hour.

RACE FOR THE CROWN The year 1957 was a banner season for the Sport of Kings. Seldom do three Superb race horses compete on a scale that happened that year.

Even their names were magnificent.

They were Bold Ruler, Round Table and Gallant Man. Throughout the entire season the trio raced their way to glory. They found their way to the winner’s circle in many of the most important races in the country.

It was time to decide who was the best of the three. Mori got lucky on this one. The race was scheduled for November 9. Normally Horse of the Year honors would have been settled with the Fall Classics at Belmont.

Fortunately for Mori, the New York races had not resolved the issue.

Gallant Man had recently won the prestigious Jockey Club Gold Cup to add to his Belmont Stakes and Travers scores. Round Table was on a win skein taking eleven straight stakes at racetracks from coast to coast. As for Bold Ruler, after taking The Preakness earlier that Spring, he had swept seven of his last nine in grand fashion. He was primed for his best effort.

The Trenton Stakes was the perfect fit to decide who deserved the sport’s highest honor. The race was contested at the classic distance of one and one quarter miles, with a purse of 75,000 dollars. More than 40,000 fans packed the stands for the race. The three contestants made their way onto the track at exactly four o’clock. Ten minutes later they were led into the starting gate. Eddie Arcaro had the mount on Bold Ruler. He jumped out to an early lead. Bill Shoemaker aboard Gallant Man chased him to no avail.

Round Table was a distant third.

Bold Ruler cruised home to an easy victory. Mr. Mori was on clouds number one through nine. A race at his track had just decided Horse of the Year honors for 1957. New Jersey was now a very big player in championship level horse racing.

NEW YORK PLANS THE FUTURE It did not take long for the New York Racing establishment to take notice that changes were needed to stay on top of the horse racing game.

New Jersey could show off three state-of-the-art facilities. It was clicking on every level. Attendance and betting were going through the roof. Championship quality races dotted their calendars. Trainers and jockeys enjoyed the atmosphere at the shore. Top notch riders moved their tack to the Garden State. Future Hall of Famers Bill Hartack, Walter Blum, Sammy Boulmetis and Steve Brooks were among them.

In the year 1955 New York racing took a dramatic turn: the four tracks that raced there were taken over by the state. The New York Racing Association was formed to oversee the new venture. Without hesitation a plan was put into action. The facilities had become run down. Although Belmont and Saratoga had history and charm, Aqueduct and Jamaica were quite the opposite. They were outdated and could not handle the overflowing crowds that New York tracks were accustomed to. The first move was to close Aqueduct with the intention of building a new, fan-friendly track that could handle massive crowds. Jamaica would stay open until the project was complete. Then its racing dates would be switched to the new Big A. When racing resumed their Belmont was torn down. It would reappear in 1968. The charm of the old track was still there, with one major difference. The new Belmont was built to accommodate 80,000 fans. Saratoga the only upstate facility was guaranteed four weeks of racing every August. The NYRA was looking to the future in a very big way.

THE BOOMING SIXTIES 1960 opened up with a bang at Garden State Park. The Jersey Stakes was renamed the Jersey Derby. The race had roots as far back as the 1860s. Public Relations Director Tommy Roberts came up with the idea of naming every race with a Civil War theme. The infield of the track was transformed into a battlefield. A live Civil War battle was staged to the delight of the unprecedented crowd.

There were cavalry charges. Cannons and Gatling guns were added to give the battle an authentic appearance.

Both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners were enticed to compete prior to the running of the Belmont Stakes, twelve days later. This was the crowning touch that brought the race to national prominence; the extravaganza was a massive success.

The race became a Memorial Day tradition. The first running exceeded all expectations. A New Jersey record

50,000 fans attended the festivities.

At Monmouth, Amory Haskell sweetened the pot for the Sapling and Sorority Stakes. Those races drew the top two-year-old colts and fillies to the track. The great Buckpasser took the Sapling in 1965. The outstanding filly Queen of the Stage prevailed in the 1967 Sorority. The main event was still the Monmouth Handicap. The 1962 rendition saw Carry Back get the best of the immortal Kelso. Nashua, Bold Ruler and Sword Dancer were also among the great champions to prevail in the Monmouth Headliner.

Racing was at its peak in New Jersey. On Memorial Day of 1967, 52,000 fans jammed Garden State to get a glimpse of the great Dr. Fager strutting his stuff in the Jersey Derby.

That summer Monmouth Park hosted 43,000 fans on a Saturday afternoon, setting a one-day attendance mark. A week later four million dollars were wagered at the track, shattering the existing record. The next week Atlantic City posted a one-day wagering mark when over three million dollars in bets went through the mutuel machines.

All three tracks had reached dizzying heights. 1967 can be looked back on as the year that the high-water mark of New Jersey racing had been achieved.

New York was also running on all cylinders. The new super tracks were built for crowds. The fans would not disappoint. On Memorial Day in 1965 over 72,000 packed the Big A setting a one-day attendance record.

At Belmont 82,000 were counted at the turnstiles for the running of the Belmont Stakes six years later.

New York Racing was in high gear.

Saratoga stayed pretty much constant during the sixties. Coming here was a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of the downstate racing scene.

New York would never be threatened again by the New Jersey Racing establishment. During the next decade, unforeseen forces were about to change the New Jersey racing map forever.

Saratoga Gymnastics Keeps Streak Alive SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga gymnastics won their final dual meet of the season by defeating Shaker 169.00 – 144.55 on Jan. 15 at the Wilton YMCA to end their dual meet season with a perfect 6-0 record.

This marks the 12th consecutive undefeated dual meet season for the Blue Streaks. On Senior Night, Saratoga secured 8

out of the top10 all-around spots led by Ava Dallas (1st all-around; 36.50) followed by Laura Eberlein (2nd all-around; 34.70), Kate DellaRatta (3rd all-around; 32.60), Molly Russell (6th all-around; 31.45), Emily Ward (7th allaround; 31.10), Olivia Allen (8th all-around; 30.80), Sophia Sperling (9th all-around; 30.65) and Erika Sudigala (10th all-around; 30.65).

At the conclusion of the meet, senior Toga gymnasts Laura Eberlein, Kate DellaRatta, Molly Russell and Emily Ward were honored.

Saratoga gymnastics returns to action on Jan. 25, as they host the Purple Passion Meet at 6 p.m. at the Wilton YMCA, which raises funds for the prevention of domestic violence.

Cudney’s Launderers - 28 In a game that was close from the opening tip-off until the final buzzer Saratoga PBA outlasted Cudney’s Launderers by a score of 31 to 28. PBA got 10 points apiece from Trey Stanislowsky and John Gerardi to led PBA to the hard earned victory. Cudney’s never fell behind by more than 5 points throughout the game and used Tom Maurer’s 10 points along with Alex Cutler, Josue Matinez and Jacob Armer all with 5 points each in the loss.

Ian Fisk had a game high 15 points while Paul Steves Cameron Fitzpatrick each contributed 6 points in the win. Tom Leary led his team with 8 points and Nate Siewert, Quinn Frank, Noah Joly and Jack Foster each scored 5 points in the defeat.

COMMUNITY SPORTS BULLETIN Yankees’ Pitcher Chad Green to Join Giants’ Sterling Shepard at #518gives Fundraiser CAPITAL REGION — Chad Green, pitcher with the New York Yankees, will appear as a special sports guest at the #518gives Fundraiser to benefit the Center for Disability Services on Jan. 27. Green will join New York Giant’s wide receiver Sterling Shepard in the sports area, which is presented by UHY LLP, at the Red Lion Hotel, formerly the Radisson Hotel Albany, 205 Wolf Road.

The two sports stars will sign autographs for fans from noon to 3 p.m. Autographs are $25 per autograph, per athlete. Baseballs will be sold for $25, footballs for $50 and photos of each athlete cost $15 per photo. All proceeds from the #518gives Fundraiser stay in the Capital Region and Saratoga/Lake George area. The Center and its divisions, St. Margaret’s Center, Prospect Center in Queensbury, Life Quality Solutions Incubator and the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center strive to improve tomorrow and have a positive impact today on the lives of people with disabilities and their families.

Fit and Gun With Elyse at the Malta Community Center MALTA – Artistic Director Elyse Young is hosting a fitness class called Fit and Fun with Elyse which is centered on music that makes you move. Adult Sports and Fitness at the Ballston Spa Schools BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Community Education Program is currently offering two adult sports opportunities from 8-10 p.m. with Co-ed Indoor Soccer held on Mondays and Men’s Basketball on Wednesdays. The next 10-week session begins the week of January 2 and requires a $30 fee for district residents.

The popular Walk About program continues throughout the winter months and provides a safe, indoor walking course for those interested in a low impact fitness activity. A $15 registration fee is required for this program and non-residents are charged $18 to participate. Walkers may join the program at any time throughout the session.

Pre-registration is required and fees are due at the beginning of each course. Those interested may register for courses by mail or in-person at the District Office, 70 Malta Avenue. SLOW FREEZE

All Outdoors THE WINTER wolf is still wearing sheep’s clothing and wool, as we all know is warm, just like the weather these last few weeks, but it won’t hold back the freeze indefinitely. Soon the wolf will shed its disguise and bare its teeth in a howling winter storm. Before that happens, step outside and enjoy an easy walk in one of the state parks or wildlife preserves that are a short drive from your home. Don’t be afraid to leave the trail, unless it’s prohibited, and explore a little.

If you keep your eyes open, you will see things that everyone else misses. Don’t just look for the big, look for the small things that are often stepped over or on. Recently, I was in the woods and I wanted

to look down from a ridgeline to the creek flowing along its base.

While checking my footing, I looked down and saw a tiny face staring back up at me. I may not be a ‘Techie,’ but I know how to use the camera on my phone and I snapped the photo you see on this page. I’d walked past that location many times before and it wasn’t until I veered from my usual path that I came upon my little friend. I could have picked any spot along hundreds of yards of ridgeline, but I chose that particular spot. It was a chance encounter that just as easily may not have chanced. I feel that my life is richer for it. Enrich your own life by going out and discovering things that perhaps only you were meant to discover.

OUTDOOR EVENTS With Winter keeping a low profile of late, there hasn’t been a lot of ice forming on the local lakes and ponds. This has been a serious point of frustration for the ice fisherman who anxiously await the arrival of safe ice. Safe ice is a debatable term among the ice fishing community. There are those reckless few, whose impatience compels them to risk their luck on ice that I wouldn’t cross if it covered a puddle in my driveway. Most of us have more sense than that and are willing to wait until the ice is at least 4 inches thick. Personally, I like to wait until there’s 6 inches of ice to make up for inconsistencies in

thickness. I am not a fan of ‘polar plunges!’ There is good ice to be found if you’re willing to travel north to some of the Adirondack lakes and ponds. It’s colder in them thar hills and the ice is thicker. Conditions can change rapidly, so check with local shops and online ice fishing forums for up-to-date reports.

If you’re interested in a hands-on, ice fishing learning experience, Moreau Lake State Park is offering an ice fishing clinic on January 26 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. All you need to do is dress warmly and bring your curiosity. Friends and volunteers will provide equipment and instruction in the art of ice fishing.

There will be a warming hut and snacks available. Call the park’s main office for more information.

On January 20, the Hudson Crossing Park in Schuylerville will be hosting their annual Winter Fest with all sorts of activities for all ages. There will be snow sculptures, snow bowling, ice harvesting, sledding (down-hill and horse-drawn), a bird walk, cold water rescue demonstration, ice fishing, food and fire! Who could ask for more? Let’s all root for a little snow, or maybe a lot, to make it more wintery. Check them out at info@hudsoncrossingpark. org and plan on being there.

The Cossayuna Lake Improvement Association is hosting their annual Ice Fishing tournament

on February 2. They run a good derby and get a lot of entrants every year. Go to www.cossayunalake.com for rules and registration info.

I’m looking forward to spending time outdoors this winter. Fishing, hiking, hunting

and even camping in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks are all on my calendar this season.
