by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — A citywide vote to elect five council members and two supervisors is more than eight months away, but movements currently in play could have ramifications come November, and ultimately help play a role in the future direction the city takes.

– who has served two, twoyear terms, and Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan – who has served five terms have each said they will not seek re-election. Additionally, Public Safety Commissioner Robin Dalton recently announced she will seek re-election, but that she will do so as a “no party” member, after changing her party registration to no longer being an active member of the GOP.

The team’s season started on Feb.12 and ends on March 13, with only a week of full-contact practice before they had their first game. They have a 14-game

schedule, and are playing three games a week – Tuesdays and back-to-back home and away games on Friday and Saturday.

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach, Regan McFerran, believes that their biggest challenge so far this year has been the limited time frame to prepare for games.

The girls’ program has also seen some limitations with numbers, and they have no JV team this year.

Ballston Spa’s Forgotten Industrialist

by Timothy Starr | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable Contact The Saratoga County History Roundtable at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com A man with the ominous-sounding name of Isaiah Blood, born on February 13, 1810, once operated one of the largest tool factories of its kind in the state along the Kayaderosseras Creek 150 years ago.

The Ballston Scythe, Axe and Tool Works shipped hundreds of thousands of quality hardedge tools around the world for decades on end.

Isaiah’s grandfather died at a relatively early age, so when John Blood moved to the town of Ballston in 1792, he brought along his nephew Sylvester. John was one of the signers of the deed of incorporation for the Ballston Baptist Church. However, by 1810 he had left Ballston and moved to New Lisbon, NY. Sylvester remained behind and purchased his uncle’s land on the Mourning Kill. He built a house on the corner of presentday Brookline Road and Route 67, which, although rebuilt over the years, still stands today. John had trained him well as a blacksmith, so he was able to make a good living by manufacturing scythes for local farmers.

Isaiah apprenticed in his father’s scythe shop. Sylvester decided to expand his operations to use the more robust waterpower of the Kayaderosseras Creek just north of Ballston Spa. Upon Isaiah’s marriage in 1831, Sylvester gave him the choice of taking over the new scythe shop or a retail store that he owned. His son chose the scythe shop and almost immediately began a steady expansion of factory buildings and tool lines.

At the peak of operations in 1870, Isaiah’s factories employed 300 men and produced over 800,000 scythes, axes, and other tools annually.

In addition to his legacy as a businessman, Isaiah was elected to several political offices, including supervisor of the town of Milton and as an Assemblyman and Senator in the State Legislature, a post he held at the time of his death.

His passing came in a most unexpected manner. In the summer of 1870 he was suddenly struck with typhoid fever, an illness brought on by ingesting contaminated food or water. As was the case with Blood, the illness typically is accompanied by high fever, headaches, coughing, abdominal pain,

and delirium. In modern times it is almost always successfully treated with antibiotics, but in the 1800s there was no cure.

The affliction advanced and retreated, giving some hope, but by mid-November it was clear that he would not recover. When he finally realized that the end was near, he requested that all of his employees be allowed to visit his bedside.

According to the Ballston Journal, “Each and all silently approached the couch of the dying man, who had been to them not only an employer, but a true friend and counselor, and pressed his hand as it lay upon the covering of the bed—the Senator being too weak and feeble to extend it to those who approached. The scene was most impressive and many a stout heart was moved to tears at this silent but touching evidence of the warm affection that existed between the stricken employer and his bereaved workmen.” He quietly passed away in his home on November 29.

It can be said that Isaiah Blood is the “forgotten” entrepreneur of Ballston Spa, despite the fact that

the hamlet of Bloodville is named after him. His scythe and axe works were famous throughout the country, but few documents survive to this day that describe his personal accomplishments and motivations.

One reason Blood’s legacy faded so quickly was the destruction of both of his main factories and the extinction of his direct family line. Although his son-inlaw continued to operate the business for 20 years after Blood died, both the scythe and axe factories were completely destroyed by fire in 1900 and never rebuilt. This sudden and complete loss was devastating to the hundreds of skilled workers employed there, most of whom were forced to move away. Blood’s own son died at a young age, as did his daughter’s children, so that by the 1920s there were no direct descendants left to carry on the family name.

At The County: Board Moves to Auction City Building on Woodlawn Ave., New Hires for Public Health

BALLSTON SPA — The Board of Supervisors this week moved forward with details regarding the selling of the building on Woodlawn Avenue in Saratoga Springs, as well as approving the hiring of additional employees for the Public Health Department.

The Board approved a resolution to hire a company to put up for auction the building it owns at 31 Woodlawn Ave. An existing lease of one floor of the building to Shelters of Saratoga for use as an overflow homeless shelter expires March 31. The auction is anticipated to take place online between April 6 and April 28.

The county also approved funds for new hires for its public health services department.

The measure includes the hiring of two Public Health Epidemiologists at the base salary

of $73,127, and one Supervising Public Health Epidemiologist at the base salary of $83,444 - to investigate patterns and causes of disease and injury in humans, and to reduce the risk and occurrence of negative health outcomes through research.

It also approved the hire of one Senior Public Health Educator to develop public health education campaigns, at the base salary of $59,522.

The projected starting date is Jan. 1, 2022 and the county offered as its reasoning, the following: as the county moves forward through to the eventual end of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, Public Health Services is in need of strong epidemiology capabilities for data analysis, displaying data, case investigation and contact tracing. Funds for the new positions will be covered by the county’s fund balance.

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, R-Saratoga, updated on

the Board on the status of the COVID relief bill under review by lawmakers in the House.

“The current COVID relief negotiations are ongoing right now. President Biden has put forth a $1.9 trillion package,” Stefanik said. “It does include state and local aid, which I support, but it also includes a laundry list of very partisan requests and priorities of Speaker Pelosi such as increasing the minimum wage, such as economic stimulus payments to illegal immigrants. I hope that there will be a bi-partisan package that includes state and local aid (but) that’s not the direction this administration is going.”

Stefanik said projections are the bill would result in millions of dollars coming to Saratoga County and that “it will also include direct funding for every town, regardless of size.”

The House is anticipated to vote on the bill Feb. 26.

Raymond was the president of the Albany Polish American Citizens Club for several years when the new building was established.

Ray and his wife, Ann, left Saratoga Springs after he retired for St. Augustine, FL. There he worked for the Red Train giving tours of this great historical city.

Ray could often be found on the golf course or socializing with friends. Always adventurous and vivacious, he was known for his love of parties and friendship.

He and Ann would vacation to Saratoga Springs for the summer months where he would conduct back stretch tours of the racetrack. Ray also volunteered at the Saratoga Visitors Center where he gave tours of Congress Park, Yaddo, and trolley tours of the city. Raymond belonged

to the Historical Society where he continued his interest in the bygone Saratoga.

In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by his brothers Richard and Stanley Zielinski and his sister, Pat Dobek.

Survivors include the love of his life for 33 years, his wife Ann, his daughters whom he was so proud of, Alecia Ramos (Tony), Amy Lee (Joe), Alison Faggiano (Blaise), Ann’s children Kelly Smachlo (Mark), Stuart McDowell (Gloria), many grandchildren, and his sister and best friend, Sandy Crooks (John).

As soon as Ray learns the layout of Heaven and its many attractions, he will be giving personalized guided tours. Ray was truly a love of history.

Due to COVID-19 a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Tyler S. Moon, 42, of South Glens Falls, was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in state prison, after pleading to felony grand larceny, in Saratoga Springs.

Justin W. Rodgers-Davis, 37, of Fort Edward, pleaded Feb. 17 to felony DWI, in Moreau.

Melissa R. LaPoint, 42, of Moreau, was sentenced Feb. 16 to 1 year in jail, after pleading to two counts felony DWI, two counts felony aggravated DWI, and endangering the life of a child, a misdemeanor, in Wilton.

Tricia M. Kilduff, 41, of Glens Falls, was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in state prison, after pleading to aggravated DWI with a child less than 16 years of age, in Moreau.

Sharu Venable, 49, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Feb. 20 with operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, aggravated DWI, refusal to take a breath test, act in manner injure child, and following too closely.

John Petalas, 24, of Rensselaer, was charged Feb. 21 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, speeding, and a motor vehicle license violation: no license.

Victor Pardo, 59, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Feb. 21 with misdemeanor DWI, and failure to keep right.

Dameon Myrick, 38, of Saratoga, was charged Feb. 21 in Saratoga springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and speeding.

BLOTTER 5 Ryan Monaco, 29, of Ballston Spa, was charged Feb. 19 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and operating a motor vehicle without stop lamps.

Matthew O’Donnell, 30, of Gloversville, was charged Feb. 16 in Saratoga Springs with petit larceny, and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Both charges are misdemeanors.

circumvent interlock, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and moving from lane unsafely.

Robert Hedrick, 29, of Ballston Spa, was charged Feb. 17 in Saratoga Springs with resisting arrest, obstruct governmental administration, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal contempt, tampering with physical evidence, and aggravated family offense.

Marcus Raffuel, 53, of Saratoga Springs, was charged Feb. 18 with misdemeanor DWI, misdemeanor aggravated DWI, and moving from lane unsafely.

State Police are investigating a vehicle pursuit that led to two state police patrol cars being damaged in Clifton Park. At approximately 11 p.m. on Feb. 18, State Police personnel were monitoring a vehicle pursuit involving a suspect in a burglary with a weapon in the city of Schenectady. As the suspect crossed into the town

of Clifton Park, Troopers joined the vehicle pursuit.

A preliminary investigation determined as the suspect vehicle traveled eastbound on State Route 146, he crossed into the center median, ramming the passenger side of a waiting troop car. The trooper car was positioned in the center median with its emergency lights activated to warn any approaching traffic. The suspect’s vehicle allegedly then intentionally rammed the driver side of the trooper car, pushing it into a snowbank. When a second unit arrived on scene, the suspect is believed to have intentionally struck the front of that patrol car, before reversing and becoming stuck in a snowbank. Neither Trooper was injured. The driver of the vehicle is identified as 29-yearold Shaquille Jahmere Daniels of Troy. Daniels was taken into custody without further resistance and turned over to the Schenectady Police Department. A loaded handgun was recovered from the vehicle.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital has added teleneurology services - including telestroke care - to give patients 24/7 emergency access to neurologists who have extensive experience treating strokes. The hospital also uses teleneurology for inpatient consultations.

“For patients with stroke symptoms, every second counts.

This technology is the fastest way to connect patients to a boardcertified neurologist who specializes in treating this critical, potentially deadly condition,” said Dr. Robert Donnarumma, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and medical director of the stroke program at Saratoga Hospital.

A stroke prevents blood flow to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Nearly 2 million brain cells die every minute that blood flow is blocked At Saratoga Hospital, as soon as a patient with stroke symptoms enters the Emergency Department, the hospital team issues a stroke alert and, using advanced video-conferencing technology, connects with a neurologist. The teleneurology equipment is mounted on a mobile cart, allowing the remote neurologist to participate in

all aspects of the neurological exam—from the CT scan to the physical exam and patient interview—before recommending a course of treatment.

Most patients can be treated at Saratoga Hospital with clotbusting medication.

Those who need more advanced care are promptly transferred to Albany Medical Center, Saratoga Hospital’s affiliate in the Albany Med Health System.

Patients who require observation and follow-up care—but not emergency interventions— are admitted to Saratoga Hospital.

Depending on their condition, their care may include additional teleneurology consultations.

Once patients are discharged, neurology care is provided by members of Saratoga Hospital Medical Group – Neurology.

The hospital had been training teams to facilitate teleneurology services before the pandemic and launched the program in the second half of 2020. By then, telehealth had emerged as a viable alternative to many in-person services, as patients and providers became more comfortable with remote care. To date, Saratoga Hospital has used the teleneurology service for more than 750 stroke and inpatient consultations.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Northeast Woodworkers Association annual Showcase presentation, and the associated Totally Turning symposium normally held during the last weekend of March at the Saratoga Springs City Center has been cancelled again for the second year in a row, due to the ongoing carona virus pandemic.

Showcase, which has been an annual event for 27 years, normally features hundreds of exhibits ranging from furniture to all other facets of woodworking, along with many vendors, and has attracted

thousands of woodworking enthusiasts in the past.

Chairman Wally Carpenter said, “It is with great sadness that we must disappoint the thousands of woodworkers in the Capital District who attend our annual event, however, we are optimistically looking forward to bringing Showcase back next year.”

Assuming the pandemic will have subsided by then, Showcase has been scheduled to be held at the City Center on the dates of March 26-27, 2022. For further information, see www. woodworker.org.

MIDDLE GROVE — Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) congratulates RuthAnne Flint for becoming a Gold Award Girl Scout, a designation she earned by creating a waste disposal unit at the Galway Public Library for waste and recyclables.

The Gold Award is earned by a Girl Scout who works to address an issue she’s passionate about in a way that produces meaningful and lasting change. Whether it is on a local, national, or global level, Gold Award Girl Scouts provide innovative solutions to significant challenges.

The waste disposal unit is decorated with environmentally friendly literary characters to appeal to children and adults.

Flint also started a program for children at the library to raise

awareness about environmental issues and involve the community.

The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national, and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change.

Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY), established in June 2007 from the union of four Girl Scout Councils (Hudson Valley, Mohawk Pathways, Adirondack and North Country), represents almost 8,500 Girl Scouts in 15 counties including Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Greene, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Montgomery, Hamilton, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington.

70 years together in life & marriage...

Nazha Frangie Kaddo and John F. Kaddo Married: February 28,1951 at St. Johns Maronite Catholic Church in Zgharta, Lebanon Immigrated to/and their current home, Troy, New York 1961 Nazha and John left their home in Lebanon to provide their new young family a better life. After they married, John & Nazha with baby Hasna traveled to Caracas, Venezuela in South America in search of work. They quickly added Theresa, Anthony & Janette to their family tree. But their ultimate dream was to make North America their home.

Just as their hopes dwindled of ever getting that opportunity to go to the U.S.A., John received notice that he would be allowed to enter into the U.S. and work, but Nazha had to sail back to Lebanon with her four young children to await her opportunity to join him.

A year later, John sent for Nazha and their four children who traveled by the Italian ocean liner.

In 1969 as naturalized citizens, they cemented their roots in the U.S. by adding their fifth and final child Mary Rose.

Both were laborers who worked well into their senior years. Without any formal education Nazha was able to work as a seamstress for Cluett, Peabody & Co., (Arrow shirts), the Marvin & the Jacobs Manufacturing Corporations and lastly after retirement, Comfortex. John found employment with Cluett Peabody & Co., Holiday Inn and CDTA. Nazha & John also owned Edna’s, a Mom & Pop’s neighborhood grocery store along with multiple apartment buildings where they supplied neighbors with many years of service, affordable housing & even some home cooked meals. It was a place of gathering

in the North Central community of Troy. They also sponsored and housed many immigrant family members and friends who also had the dream to make America their home.

They have five children, seven grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Nazha’s faith to Jesus, our Virgin Mary and the Maronite-Catholic religion for her entire life has guided her and given her strength throughout her almost 94 years of living.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The city Planning Board this week looks to consider its review of a pair of proposed large-scale projects in Saratoga Springs.

Applications under consideration include: a special use permit for a proposed mixed-use development at Excelsior Avenue

& Ormandy Lane. The proposed Excelsior Park Project calls for 179 residential units and 147,600 square feet of non-residential uses.

A site plan review for a proposed 120-room hotel is also under consideration that targets 176 South Broadway. The proposed South Broadway Hotel will

occupy a space currently occupied by the Turf and Spa motel.

In Ballston Spa, Five Candidates Vying for Two Trustee Seats BALLSTON SPA — Ballston Spa voters will head to the polls March 16 to elect candidates to fill two trustee seats up for election.

Bob Bush – a lifelong village resident and volunteer firefighter with the Union Fire Company, Mary Price-Bush - who has extensive background in retail business operations and is employed at the

Saratoga County Airport, and Sean Mulvaney, a volunteer firefighter who has worked for the Town of Milton for 13 years and owns a lawn-care business, have campaigned together to help raise awareness of the campaign issues they all support.

Mulvaney is an independent running under the “Vision to a

Better Ballston Spa” affiliation.

The City extends its congratulations to recipients of the COVID-19 Small Business Grant Program.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The COVID-19 Small Business Grant Program (SBG), administered locally by the City’s Office of Community Development, has awarded $5,000 - $10,000 grants to small, city businesses severely impacted by pandemic.

Award recipients are located

within the Saratoga Springs city limits, employ 50 people or less, generate less than $3.5 million in 2019 annual gross receipts, and were able to demonstrate extreme financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each recipient has committed to preserving at least one full-time-equivalent

position held by a person of lowincome for a period of at least six months.

The awards are funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Saratoga Springs Could Be In for A Wild Ride to Election Day 2021 continued from front page...

In a city that has, of late, grown accustomed to political incumbents, the prospect of political turn-over can result in a steep learning experience on-the-job, says former Deputy Mayor Hank Kuczynski.

“While it’s the same (commission) form of government, it takes some time for people to figure out their own roles, and then learn how those roles work together,” says Kuczynski, a Saratoga Springs resident who served in Ken Klotz’ administration and has maintained an interest in city politics. “The significance is that it looks like there are only (a few) incumbents who are going to run for office and possibly be elected – so there’s going to be a long learning curve. They’re going to be untested and inexperienced in terms of the process.”

Another potentially intriguing aspect in this coming November’s election could come as a result of recent changes in election law that have altered the landscape involving a number of so-called minor parties.

Voters previously registered with the Green, Libertarian, Independence, or SAM party, are now considered No Party (NOP).

The four political parties that now remain in New York State are Democratic, Republican, Conservative, and Working Families. While all registered voters are eligible to vote in the November General Election, No Party voters are not eligible to vote in any Primary Elections.

In addition to voters, candidates will also be affected by the changes. If a potential candidate does not receive the endorsement of any of those four existing parties, it would appear that several hundred signed petitions are required to secure an independent line on the ballot for the specific election.

To understand the value of third parties, consider the results of the Saratoga Springs 2019 elections, where the victors of three of the five council seats up for vote were largely aided by candidates holding lines in addition to those that they held in the Democrat and Republican parties.

Democrat Party primary winner Patty Morrison compiled nearly 3,200 votes on the ticket for Finance Commissioner, but Michele Madigan ultimately emerged the victor after securing nearly 2,000 votes on the Working Families line, nearly 1,800 on the

Independence Party line and several dozen votes on the SAM line.

In the Department of Public Works Commissioner race, Democrat Dillon Moran bested Republican Anthony “Skip” Scirocco 3,499 to 2,771, but Scirocco emerged as winner by adding 909 Independence Party and 419 Conservative Party line votes. And current Public Safety Commissioner Robin Dalton – who received 2,648 Republican line votes to Democrat challenger Kendall Hicks’ 3,401 - secured the council seat by adding more than 1,300 combined additional votes via the Conservative, Libertarian, Independent, and SAM lines.

Where candidates are concerned, there are now less party opportunities available for endorsement and to actually get on a ballot. They must now do so under either the Democrat, Republican, Conservative, or Working Families line, or go the independent signature route.

Voters registered in any of the previously existing party lines interested in enrolling in currently existing parties had until last week to do so. Eddie Miller, chairman of the Saratoga County Independence Party, was one resident to do so when he enrolled

Supervisor Phil Barrett - chair of Economic Development & Public Works, Theodore Kusnierz - chairman of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, and Dr. Daniel Kuhles, Commissioner of Saratoga County Public Health Services, host a press conference Feb. 24, when they reported, to date, 36,324 - or 15.8% of Saratoga County residents had received at least one dose of vaccine. A total of 19,562 – or 8.5% of county residents had received both doses of the vaccine. with the Working Families Party.

In Saratoga Springs, there are 107 voters registered with the Working Families party line, according to documents requested from, and provided by the Saratoga County Board of Elections. There are 71 members who were either registered with other parties or were unaffiliated with any party, who recently joined the Working Families Party during the past 12 months, according to voter enrollment documents.

Those 71 new members of the Working Families Party line

came from various previous affiliations: 30 were previously registered Republicans, 17 Democrats, 7 Independence Party members, and a combined 5 members previously enrolled with the Conservative, Libertarian and Green party lines. Twelve had no previous party affiliation.

The shift in enrollments may have ramifications leading up to the election season, Kuczynski explains.

“What it does, is it controls who gets the nomination. It can either help select a candidate, or it can block a candidate,” he said.

Workforce Housing Is Here

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Waiters, waitresses, police officers and schoolteachers are some of the people working in Saratoga Springs who may having the opportunity to live in the city with the development of some new, affordable, workforce housing units on the city’s west side. It’s called the Promenade, and it’s slated for completion in the spring.

The Promenade apartments feature 63 new rental units.

The project consists of a fourstory mid-rise building that will house 41 one and two-bedroom apartments and three townhouse apartment buildings featuring 22 apartments made up of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments.

This workforce housing project targets a wide range of income levels - including 30%, 50%, 60% and 80% of the area median income, or AMI thresholds. The AMI for Saratoga

Springs is about $70,000 says Paul Feldman, executive director of the Saratoga Springs Housing Authority, and president of Promenade Development – which is an affiliate of the SSHA and is the company that owns the 63-unit project.

In actual dollars, that translates to a monthly onebedroom rent range of $340 $1,090 for an average 759 square feet; two- bedroom range from $399 - $1312 (995 sq. ft. avg.), and a three-bedroom range from $453 - $1522 (1348 sq. ft. avg.). Ten of the units will be set aside for veterans who have been or are at risk of homelessness and / or who have a disability.

The development is sited on South Federal Street, behind the Stonequist high-rise apartments (41 apartments), and on West Circular Street- where there will be 22 apartments in three townhouses.

Two of the townhouses are completed and availability still exists for two-bedroom units.

both projected to be completed by May 1,” Feldman said.

“We have been accepting applications and are starting the process of determining eligibility of those applicants for a projected May 1 move-in date. We strongly encourage people to get their applications in now.”

“When I took over the housing authority about five years ago, we identified at that point that of all the housing built in

the past decade or so none of it was considered to be affordable housing; it had been over a decade since any affordable housing had been built,” Feldman said.

“A large segment of Saratoga Springs employment is the hospitality industry, not to mention the hospital workers – and the majority of the money those employees made did not allow them to live in Saratoga Springs, because of the outrageous cost of apartments.”

Input was gleaned from agencies such as the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association and the county Chamber of Commerce.

“Their plight was of being able to keep employees. They wanted to have affordable housing so they could keep their work force local,” Feldman said. “And it’s not only the restaurant and hospitality industry, but professions like teaching, or police. They can even afford to live in the city. New police officers, new teachers who start out at $40,00 a year. They can actually afford to live in Saratoga Springs now. This will provide more options for people. We started on the path maybe four years ago and it’s now coming to fruition. Saratoga Hospital Looks to Develop Morgan Street Medical Office Center

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital has submitted a sketch plan application for review by the city Planning Board with the goal of developing a medical office center on Morgan Street.

The preliminary plans include a medical office center that would allow Saratoga Hospital to bring physicians from offices throughout the city

to a single location, where they could more easily collaborate on patient care. Equally important, because of the site’s proximity to the hospital, in emergency situations surgeons and other physicians could get to Saratoga Hospital in minutes.

“We have long believed that a medical office center is the best use of this last piece of undeveloped

land adjacent to our hospital property,” said Angelo Calbone, Saratoga Hospital president and CEO, in a statement. “We look forward to bringing the benefits of more convenient, coordinated care to our growing community.

This is the next step in fulfilling our commitment.”

The sketch plans also address the potential for future

development, primarily in preparation for the required New York State Environmental Quality Review.

“Currently, there are no specific plans for future development,” said attorney Matt Jones, Saratoga Hospital’s land-use counsel. “However, to truly assess and mitigate the potential environmental impact, we need to

look at the entire parcel. To do otherwise would be shortsighted.”

Saratoga Hospital owns the Morgan Street property, which was included in 18 zoning changes made in 2019 to align the city’s zoning map and comprehensive plan as required by state law. The realignment cleared the way for medical office use on the property.

Inflation

by David Rath, CFA, Director, Portfolio Services for Saratoga TODAY A common risk to investments that is typically an afterthought is the risk that your money will lose purchasing power in the future. Why is it an afterthought? Its symptoms are mostly imperceptible from day-to-day, so we focus on more pressing things like the potential loss in value caused by a March 2020style crash. In our hopefullysoon-post-COVID environment, we will be forced to grapple with the effects of the massive efforts taken by both the government and Federal Reserve to keep our economy afloat. Where will we feel the effects? What can be done to protect your investments?

Inflation is tricky. There is no easy way to define it. On the surface, it seems simple – the price of things going up. But which things? How much weight should we assign each item in a basket of goods? We are also not entirely sure what causes it. Many prepared for a hyperinflationary environment in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis that never materialized. Everybody is well aware of the inflation that has existed throughout the past decade(s) in healthcare and education, but perhaps post-COVID inflation will look different. A rush to the suburbs and a shortage of housing supply has seen the price of lumber quadruple in less than a year. We have also seen the price at the pump awake from its

slumber and essential agriculture commodities like corn and soybeans have appreciated meaningfully in the past few months.

In a portfolio, fixed income will bear the brunt of inflationary pressures the most. This makes sense. If you are expecting to receive a pre-defined stream of future payments in a world where future dollars are worth less, the price of that instrument will adjust downward to reflect this. An allocation to an inflation-protected bond issued by the government would help to offset this. Another option to protect your portfolio is commodities. They were the hedge of choice at the beginning of the last decade, but they were coming on the heels of explosive growth in the prior decade and needed a chance to breathe. As you can see in the accompanying chart, they have been lying in wait for the last five years and this could be their time to shine.

It should be mentioned that nothing is set in stone and

decisions about your investments should be made in the context of your complete financial picture.

Focusing on just one risk that may or may not materialize potentially leaves you exposed in other areas.

A finely tuned financial planning process combined with investment implementation can only help to set you up for financial success.

On December 31, 2020, Skidmore College made history when they concluded their largest fundraising campaign ever.

Creating Our Future: The Campaign for Skidmore raised a recordsetting $229.4 million from a whopping 27,193 donors over a sevenyear period beginning in October 2013.

“Strengthening a creative, collaborative and community-centered future for Skidmore has always been at the core of Creating Our Future,” said Skidmore College President Marc Conner in a press release.

Conner took over the position last July following the retirement of President Emeritus Philip Glotzbach, who, along with Marie Glotzbach, publicly announced the campaign in 2017.

“Our commitment to this vision for the future remains steadfast,” continued Conner. “This is an incredibly important moment for our college because of what our entire community — past, present and future — has made possible.”

Isaiah Perkins, ’22, a double-major in Spanish and Religious Studies, said that with three other collegebound siblings at home in Boston, without the scholarships that pay for the majority of his tuition, he’d likely have to work multiple jobs to afford school.

Changing the Game

The remote work experience he got teaching English as a Second Language with LifeWorks Community Action and paid for through the college’s Summer Experience Fund allowed him to sustain himself through the summer.

Skidmore, a first-class liberal arts college known for their exceptional humanities, social sciences, and arts programs, is now integrating the sciences more than ever before.

The campus’ new Center for Integrated Sciences (CIS), which is slated for completion in 2024, will be a 200,000 sq. ft. building housing all 10 of Skidmore’s science departments and programs.

Equipped with state-of-the art laboratories, advanced safety and energy efficiency features, the building’s 58,000 sq. ft. North Wing opened last September.

“It’s going to totally change the feel of the sciences at Skidmore and be a game changer,” said Pat Fehling, Associate Dean of the Faculty and Professor for the Health and Human Physiological Sciences Department.

At the school for 28 years, Fehling is looking forward to the sciences being in a centralized location where collaboration can happen between disciplines.

“We’re relying on science to drive solutions. We are part of that conversation,” she said.

Answers that Challenge & Inspire The campaign is also supporting critical priorities through the Skidmore Fund; bolstering scholarships and financial aid; and increasing career development opportunities.

“Everyone can think back to the teachers that have touched them – who have created and inspired a passion within them. Teaching changes the world,” said Perkins.

Creative Thought Matters Creating Our Future is also enhancing athletics, health and wellness initiatives, and funding innovative programming at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery.

Sophia Paulino Adames, ’22, is originally from the Dominican Republic and has lived in New York for four years. In addition to the scholarships that pay for her double-major in Studio Art and French, higher education COVID relief funds allowed her to get mental health support.

“It’s really awesome. It’s great. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be without all the financial aid from Skidmore.

I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else,” she said.

Her time here has also fostered her desire for social equality and inspired her to build a better tomorrow.

“Skidmore is such an interdisciplinary institution.

I’ve learned so many things outside of my area of study and I can bring all of that into my art.”

Summer Camp is a Go!

Town of Greenfield Officials Redesign Summer Camp for 2021 After 2020’s quiet and mostly cancelled summer, Greenfield children are sure to welcome a reimagined summer day camp centering on old-fashioned country fun. The Town of Greenfield redesigned its popular summer camp with a new location and curriculum to meet the challenges of 2021. Camp will take place daily, weather permitting, at the Middle Grove Town Park for five weeks beginning June 29 from 8:30-12:30 p.m. Signups begin March 1 for Greenfield residents only at www.greenfieldny.org.

Changes began with moving the 30-year-old camp from Greenfield Elementary School to the Middle Grove Town Park, at 428 Middle Gove Road in Middle Grove, N.Y., which just underwent a major overhaul in November including state-of-the-art playground upgrades, a renovated large pavilion, as well as basketball and tennis courts. The park also features 8 acres of open space with tree-lined fields and a 1.5-mile wooded walking trail.

The camp will adhere to all state safety regulations this summer including masks and social distancing, where necessary. Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome.

Campers will be supervised with a 2:10 couselor/ camper ratio featuring more than 30-trained camp counselors. Children will be grouped in pods of ten and each group will have a private tent for their convenience. The camp will be led by Eric Hayden,

a popular Saratoga Springs School District Physical Education coach. There will be an easy, contactless drop off and pick up loop for parents.

Camp activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as: obstacle courses; wiffleball, soccer, flag football, kickball, basketball and other sports; hiking; gardening; Taekwondo; and other organized games. Three times a week an art director will lead a myriad of projects involving painting, spin art, tye-die, chalk art and more. The camp will have themed days like “Super Hero” or “Hat Day.” Each Friday will bring free ice cream from an ice cream truck or Stewart’s Shops. Uncharted Wild LLC will visit weekly with live wild animal demonstrations.

“Our schedule will be ever-changing and kids are sure to come home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at the park with friends,” said Rebecca Sewell, Town of Greenfield recreation director. “We have adapted to meet the community’s need for simple outdoor summer fun.”

The Town of Greenfield is home to 7,500 residents and spans more than 41,000 acres of land, including Brookhaven Park and Golf Course in Porter Corners, NY. Other summer activities sponsored by the Town of Greenfield include golf camp, tennis camp and a PGA Junior Golf League.

intertime is a slower season at the farmers’ market. There are fewer vegetables and fruits in season, and there is a more intimate group of vendors. But innovation never stops for local businesses; customers can find new products almost every week. Here are some new arrivals and hidden gems to look out for the next time you shop in person or online at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market.

FOR BEEF SHANKS:

• 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

• 3-4 large carrots*, cut in rough cubes

• Salt, to taste

• 1 large turnip, cut in medium-large cubes

• 2-3 cups water (to mostly cover meat)

• 1 medium onion*, cut into eighths • 2 cloves garlic*, cut in large chunks • 1 beef shank* • 1 tbsp maple syrup* • 1 cup of red wine*

• Parsley* for garnishing

FOR POLENTA: • 1 cup Abenaki corn*, ground (use blender or food processor) • 1 cup water + 3 cups water • ½ cup mozzarella*, cubed • 1 tbsp salt

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Lay down a thin layer of onion, carrot, and turnip. Place the shank on top of that. Fill in around the sides with the remaining onion, carrot, and turnip to fill the crock pot.

2. Sprinkle garlic on top and pour red wine on meat. Then splash balsamic vinegar and maple syrup on meat. Add salt and seasonings of choice (rosemary or Italian seasoning fit great) sprinkled over meat.

3. Put the crock pot on medium-low heat. Add water to cover about three-quarters of the meat. Add the lid. Leave it going for 4.5 to 5.5 hours, flipping meat and stirring veggies every hour or so. It’s done when a fork will pull away the meat from the bone without a knife.

4. For the polenta: Combine a cup of cornmeal with 1 cup of water in a bowl and stir together into a paste. Bring the other 3 cups of water to a boil and add a tablespoon of salt.

5. Once the water is boiling, add the corn paste to the boiling water.

Stir around with a wooden spoon and try to keep it from sticking to sides. Turn heat to medium and keep it at a low boil. After 5 or so minutes of intermittent stirring it should be one mass.

6. Add in mozzarella, continue stirring for 1-2 minutes and turn off the heat once the chunks start to melt in. Leave it on the hot burner for 5-10 minutes to dry out a little more. Done when set.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

This winter is certainly giving us plenty of snow. As I glance out into the white wonderland and watch the children in our neighborhood play, I reflect on some of my own fondest childhood memories playing in the snow. I enjoy sharing this story with you each winter. I grew up during a time when the average was at least four children per household and you were literally thrown outdoors to play and told not to come back home until the street lights came on. Playing in the snow included making homemade sleds to slide down the golf course hills, making snowmen, and of course, building the best snow fort in the neighborhood. In our house we divided up the tasks to ensure that our “fort” could withstand repeated attacks of snowball wielding elementary school kids. In the creation of our snow fort, my brother Danny was the engineer and he mapped out how high and thick the walls should be. My youngest brother Billy was the builder and shaped the inside of the fort for the chairs, refrigerator and snow TV. The baby of our family Patty was support staff. Since I was the oldest of the Reardon children clan, I was the recruiter and went door to door finding my soldiers and builders. We were not allowed to use the phone back then (adults only), so when I came to the door and knocked you could hear a stampede of children in the house trying to get to the door. To get them to work on the fort I would tell them that my mother was making meatball sandwiches!

My mother’s meatballs were the envy of the neighborhood and far exceeded the bologna and spam the other kids were getting. My first stops were Dave and Karl’s houses and they lived next door to each other. They were my age but already almost as tall as most of our fathers at the age of six. Dave turned out to be 6’8” and Karl is 6’6”. If you want your walls to be the highest, I thought, get the tallest kids. My mother would grimace when she saw them coming as she knew she would need a lot more meatballs. Our first forts were wrecked at night by teenagers until my brother Dan came up with the idea to put water on the outside walls and it would turn them to ice. You could hear the howls of the mean teenagers when they kicked the walls and they didn’t give so easily.

Although I cannot share with you my mom’s meatball secret recipe that only my sister’s and Paula have; I will share with you a special person from our area’s recipe – Rachael Ray.

INGREDIENTS MEATBALLS

• 1 large egg, beaten

• 1 lb. ground veal or ground beef, pork and veal mix

• Salt and pepper

• 1/2 lb. bulk sweet Italian sausage with fennel

SAUCE

• 2 cups grated ParmigianoReggiano or Pecorino Romano • 1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs

• Olive oil, for drizzling • 2 tbsp. olive oil • 4 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 can (28 oz.) crushed Italian tomatoes

• A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn • Sea salt • 4 Italian hoagie rolls (10 to 12 inches each), split • OPTIONAL: Deli-sliced provolone

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 475°.

2. In a medium bowl, mix all the meatball ingredients except the oil; roll into 12 large balls. Transfer the meatballs to a rimmed baking sheet, drizzle with the oil and roast, turning once, until browned and just cooked through, 18 to 20 minutes.

3. For the sauce, in a wide skillet or pot, heat the oil, two turns of the pan, over medium. Add the garlic and swirl the pan until the garlic is fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes and basil and season with the sea salt. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 15 to 20 minutes.

4. Toss the meatballs in the sauce and serve on the hoagie rolls. If using provolone, top with the cheese, and place on a baking sheet and pop into the hot oven until the cheese melts, about 4 minutes.

To this day, when I talk with some of my childhood friends, they join me in reminiscing about the fun snow forts, and the reward of my mother’s meatball sandwiches. To this day, her meatballs remained unparalleled.

However, Paula’s meatballs are on target with them especially since my mother did share her “secret” method with Paula.

DEACON KING KONG:

SARATOGA SPRINGS — James McBride’s most recent novel, Deacon King Kong, is a poignant and clever portrayal of 1960’s Red Hook Brooklyn.

Saratogians with family ties to the city will find the setting and characters familiar and if not highly entertaining.

The novel begins with the shooting of 19-year-old, up and coming heroin dealer, Deems Clemens by the 71-year-old

affable, drunk handyman/ church deacon Cuffy Lambkin a.k.a. Sportcoat. This single act ignites the community that is the Causeway Housing Projects with unpredictable results. More than a solitary act of violence in a tough neighborhood, this shooting, and its aftermath, tells the story of a neighborhood, a way of life and the power of collective struggles and heartache with humor and pathos.

Our shooter – Sportcoat is fumbling through life as he is being pursued by the local police for the shooting for which he has no memory. He is aided kindly by his friend, Hot Sausage who provides him with homemade hooch he calls King Kong.

Sportcoat’s community includes his fellow project residents, his Five Ends Baptist Church members and clergy, his blind 20-year-old son Pudgy Fingers, and his deceased wife Hattie who mystically appears to him every day mostly to nag him from the great beyond.

Through great charm and

irony, McBride intertwines competing drug gangs, Italian mobsters, devoted church members, sympathetic police and a handful of romances to produce a tale of morality in which the reader is not always sure of where the greater good lies. Throw in the government free cheese program of the time, some missing Christmas club church funds, a hidden religious relic and you have quite a story. This book is perfect fodder for endless conversations of right and wrong, struggle and practicality and personal and societal responsibility.

“I had the great pleasure of hearing James McBride speak at our own Northshire Bookstore this past March to discuss Deacon King Kong. It was the last public event I attended prior to shelter in place and am awfully glad he made it under the wire. (Mr. McBride was way ahead of social distancing when he preemptively apologized for not shaking hands and instead waived to all attendees. He confessed that a downside of celebrity was the

general public’s desire to always shake your hand.) Mr. McBride discussed his conveying of history through fiction as a preferable and more illuminating way to bring realities of a people and a place to life. This was clearly evident in his 2013 pre-civil war John Brown novel “Good Lord Bird” for which he won The National Book Award for Fiction. To fully appreciate the unique prism through which author McBride views the world, I would urge readers to get his nonfiction biographical “The Color of Water” which takes us through his Brooklyn upbringing with a white, orthodox Jewish mom, a Black pastor father and numerous siblings.

Through the foibles of each of his characters, James McBride brings us back to Brooklyn in the 60’s with the influx of the heroin trade, poverty, racism, neighborhood segregation all with relevance to today’s world.

His characters’ complexities nuance immoral acts in moral people, kind acts in seemingly immoral people and love of an

individual versus bias of a group.

The themes of friendship through familiarity, acceptance and spiritual presence are throughout this wonderful read.

If you want to be able to produce a smile on demand, read this book and keep its characters ever ready in your memory bank.”

Free Literature Evenings Series Features Readings from Award-Winning Authors BENNINGTON, VT — Literature Evenings, Bennington College’s distinguished Wednesday night readings series, will highlight prestigious authors, faculty members, and student voices during its Spring 2021 series.

All Literature Evenings readings will be presented remotely over Zoom. All events begin at 7 p.m. and are free, open to the public, and can be accessed and shared from the Literature Evenings webpage.

“Our Literature Evenings are normally held in the Franklin living room,” said

Benjamin Anastas, a member of the Literature faculty. “It’s an intimate setting with a lot of history: writers like Bernard Malamud, Anaiïs Nin and poet Mary Oliver all read their work in front of that fireplace.”

“Temporarily,” Anastas continued, “we’ll have to gather at the hearth of Zoom.”

On Wednesday, March 17, Literature Evenings celebrates the book launch of Small Bibles for Bad Times by Liliane Atlan and translated by faculty member Marguerite Feitlowitz. Visionary French poet/playwright/novelist

Liliane Atlan was driven to “find language to say the unsayable . . . to (find a way) to integrate within our conscience, without dying in the attempt, the shattering experience of Auschwitz.”

This event will begin with a staged reading from Mister Fugue (Atlan’s best-known play, also translated by Feitlowitz) performed by Drama Faculty Kirk Jackson, with students Joshua Goldberg, David Guzman, and Ruby Loewenstein.

On Wednesday, April 28, faculty member Paul La Farge will read. La Farge is the author of four

novels: The Night Ocean (Penguin/ Random House), The Artist of the Missing (FSG), Haussmann, or the Distinction (Picador), and Luminous Airplanes (FSG), which continues as a large Web-based hypertext. He has also written a book of imaginary dreams, The Facts of Winter (McSweeney’s).

His stories and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, The Paris Review, Harper’s, and elsewhere.

The Literature Evenings series concludes in May with two events led by Bennington students.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The second annual Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Awards – aka the Eddies Music Awards – will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. May 2 from Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga.

The awards show has been twice rescheduled. It was originally planned to be held in front of an audience at the

Proctors MainStage last spring and then was rescheduled due to the pandemic to be broadcast in December from UPH. A surge in COVID-19 cases late in 2020 resulted in further postponement.

Scheduled performers and panelists will be announced in the coming weeks.

The show will be broadcast live on Collaborative Studios’ Amazon

Fire TV, Roku and Apple TV apps, its public access channels in Albany and Schenectady, and on YouTube and Facebook. It will be available on-demand for free after the event.

TANG RECEIVES EXPANSIVE GIFT SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College has received a gift of 24 contemporary artworks from the collection of Michael O. and Sirje Helder Gold.

The gift includes works created in the 1990s and 2000s by a diverse group of leading and emerging artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Sean Duffy, Naomi Fisher, Iva Gueorguieva, Michelle Grabner, Carol Hepper, Steve Roden, Jonathan Seliger, Glen Seator, George Stoll, Beverly Semmes, and Barbara Takenaga.

The Golds are prominent art collectors who have lived in New York City and Los Angeles, and are known for championing the work of younger artists. Many of the paintings, photographs, and sculptures included in their gift are by artists from the West Coast and represent the Tang’s first acquisition from their oeuvre.

Other works were created by artists who have been featured in exhibitions across the Tang’s twenty-year exhibition history.

The gift will introduce many of these artists to new audiences, and the additions to the Tang’s growing collection will provide valuable opportunities for research and study by students and scholars from a variety of disciplines.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary year, the Tang Teaching Museum has grown its collection to more than 16,000 objects. Numerous works from the Tang collection, including works from the Golds’ gift, are on view during its twentieth anniversary year. Energy in All Directions (through June 13)

Congregation Shaara Tfille, Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs present “Shylock” SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs will host a virtual reading of Shylock at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.

Written by the Canadian playwright Mark Leiren-Young, the reading features Lary Opitz followed by a session of Question and Answers.

Shylock is a one character, one act play that has been produced at theatres and Shakespeare Festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada.

It focuses on Jon Davies, a Jewish actor who had played Shylock in a production of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Jon addresses his audience at a “talk back” session after the play is closed abruptly due to controversy over the play’s alleged anti-Semitism.

This dramatic reading is presented with the permission of the playwright and through an arrangement with Actors’ Equity Association.

New Empire State Saratoga Race Course Trail Bike Tour Summer Stakes Schedule NEW YORK — Discovery Bicycle Tours has just announced their new Empire State Trail Bike Tour on the recently completed Empire State Trail. The Discovery route is a six day, 200-mile tour on the Hudson Valley Greenway section, starting in New York City and ending in Albany. The gentle ride on mostly paved trails, passes through historic villages and has scenic views of the Hudson River, the Catskill Mountains, and more.

The tour is being offered

on five different dates from June through October 2021. A small group of 13 riders will be accompanied by two leaders, and the trip includes most meals and five-star hotel lodging. Open Gym is Back at the Rec SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Recreation Department is resuming open gyms after developing new COVID safe protocols for activities. Registration is required, and will be for a onehour slot that can be made up to seven days in advance. The current schedule is Monday – Friday, 2:30– 3:30 p.m. and 3:45–4:45 p.m.

For City residents open gym is $4, and for Non-City residents the price is $5. Payment is due at the time of registration and is nonrefundable. All participants must also have a valid City or Non-City Rec Card, which is free and valid for two years. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by a

person 16 years or older.

Masks must be worn at all times while in the facilities, and walk-ins will not be allowed.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced the stakes schedule for the 40-day summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course. Opening day is Thursday, July 15. Following the four-day opening weekend, racing will be conducted five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays, with the exception of the final week of racing. The final week of racing will conclude on Labor Day, Monday, September 6.

The 40-day meet will feature 76 stakes worth $21.5 million in total purses. The 2021 summer meet, which will offer at least one stakes race every live racing day, will be highlighted by the 152nd renewal of the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on August 28 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 7, the anchors of two of the most prestigious racing days in North America.

Saratoga Little League Registration Now Open

CLIFTON PARK — Congratulations to 11-year-old Leyanna Klotz from Cartwheels gymnastics who placed 1st overall this past weekend at the 2021 Rochester Classic. She placed 1st in both bars, beam and floor. This was her first time competing since February 2020 prior to the shutdown.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs students ages 4 to 13-years-old, can now sign up for the Spring 2021 season of Saratoga Springs Little League (SSLL).

Little League games will be played twice a week from late April

through early June at West Side Recreation in Saratoga Springs.

SSLL is also looking for volunteer field assistants, coaches, and managers. No experience necessary. A background check is required.

Registration is open until March 20. Sign up by Feb. 28 and save $10 (offer does not apply to T-ball).

B OYS SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team at Saratoga Central Catholic School is adjusting to a new coach and playing basketball during a pandemic.

Bill Haskell, Head Coach of the Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team at Saratoga Central Catholic School, has been coaching for 41 years, with most of his career spent as head coach at SUNY Adirondack. When he retired, he was asked to come help the program, and this is his first year as head coach at Saratoga Central Catholic School.

According to Coach Haskell, this season has been the most difficult in all of his 41 seasons. However, his assistant coach, Bill Luciano, and the JV boys’ coach, Daniel Kumlander, along with the boys on the team, have made the transition and COVID adjustments easier to handle.

The team’s season started Feb. 1 after getting clearance from the Saratoga County Department of Health, and within six days they had their first game. They have a 14-game schedule within the makeshift league formed by Saratoga County, and are finished playing by March 13. They play Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Coming up this weekend (Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 27) is a tough series with Mechanicville, one of the top teams on their schedule.

The team is fairly young, but has varsity experience, with three seniors, one sophomore, and some juniors who played on varsity last year as sophomores. The team’s leading scorers are senior forward Hayden Day (#14), junior guard Robbie Bolen III (#3), and junior guard Anthony Barile (#5). Day, who is also the team’s leading rebounder, and senior forward Aiden Lambert (#24), a rebounder and 3-point shooter, are team captains who contribute greatly and keep the team’s spirits high in their leadership positions.

Versatility is the team’s greatest advantage, as they have players skilled at multiple positions and their offensive skills are spread out amongst the team. As well, based on percentages, their 3-point shooting is strong. The team is working on Coach Haskell’s slower style of play and how to overcome being outmatched physically.

“The formula we try to follow is our shooting percentage, offensively, and defensively, to rebound and have fewer turnovers than the other team,” said Coach Haskell. “That overcomes the discrepancy in size.”

Other new challenges for the coach and the team include: being able to hear each other from opposite sides of the court through their masks, drawing up plays on the whiteboard while being socially distant at time outs, dealing with mental and physical fatigue from back-to-back games, and also the lack of fans in the bleachers.

“I tell my guys, you have to create your own energy, because the way that you warm up and the way that you prepare for the game makes up for the lack of fans,” said Coach Haskell. “I think they are just so thrilled to be out there playing that it doesn’t matter if there are people watching or not.”

However, he does believe that these games are providing a sense of normalcy during the pandemic. And, although there are no sectional or state championships at the end of the season, he still expects his team to put in the effort and enthusiasm.

“I never talk to our team about winning,” said Coach Haskell. “I always feel that if you execute offensively, play together, communicate, really work hard on defense, battle on the boards, and do all the right things, then you have a chance at the end of the game [to win].”

Their roster includes six varsity returners (four seniors and two juniors), as well as three more juniors, sophomore, and freshmen. They have six strong starters, and strong players coming off the bench.

Junior guard Ashley Upson (#4) is their leading scorer, and senior forward Molly O’Reilly (#30) brings great defensive energy. As a team, their strengths are defense, and something else you can’t necessarily teach in practice.

“OUR GREATEST STRENGTH WITH THESE GIRLS IS THEIR RESILIENCE,” SAID COACH MCFERRAN.

“Our greatest strength with these girls is their resilience,” said Coach McFerran.

“They are a group that is highly motivated, and their work ethic is unbelievable.”

Per a decision made by Section 2, there are no spectators allowed at the game, resulting in an unfamiliar gym atmosphere that might be hard to overcome for some teams – but not for these varsity girls.

“With a sport like basketball, energy in the gym is something you look forward to, something that can play a role in a close and competitive game,” said Coach McFerran.

“The girls have done a great job of providing their own energy and understanding that they have to bring it every single day for themselves and their teammates.”

Even with no sectional or state championships this year either, the team is still looking on the brighter side of this season.

“These girls are happy to be here and to be playing a season they were not sure they were going to get,” said Coach McFerran.

“So, my biggest expectation for them, and our biggest emphasis has been, don’t take these games for granted…leave it all out on the court and get better every day.”

National Museum of Racing Announces 2021 Hall of Fame Finalists SARATOGA SPRINGS — Six racehorses, three trainers, and one jockey account for the 10 finalists that will comprise the National Museum of Racing’s 2021 Hall of Fame ballot, as chosen by the Museum’s Hall of Fame Nominating Committee.

The finalists are racehorses American Pharoah (first year of eligibility), Blind Luck, Game On Dude, Havre de Grace, Kona Gold, and Rags to Riches; trainers Christophe Clement, Doug O’Neill, and Todd Pletcher (first year of eligibility); and jockey Corey Nakatani.

Hall of Fame voters may select as many or as few candidates as they

believe are worthy of induction to the Hall of Fame. All candidates that receive 50 percent plus one vote (majority approval) from the voting panel will be elected to the Hall of Fame. All of the finalists were required to receive support from two-thirds of the 15-member Nominating Committee to qualify for the ballot.

Ballots will be mailed to the Hall of Fame voting panel the first week in March. The results of the voting on the contemporary candidates will be announced on Wednesday, May 5. That announcement will also include this year’s selections by the Museum’s Steeplechase Review

Committee, which meets once every four years.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony — which will honor both the 2020 and 2021 inductees — is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Aug. 6, at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, at 10:30 a.m. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many details relating to the induction ceremony are still to be determined.

To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, trainers must be licensed for 25 years, while jockeys must be licensed for 20 years.
