Clifton Park’s Own Amusement Park

Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable On April 3, 1935, wrecking crews began the demolition of buildings and rides that comprised an amusement park in Rexford. Few can remember when Clifton Park had its own amusement park.

It was located on the Mohawk River in Rexford near the Alplaus

border from 1906 to 1933. Stanley “Spud” Bartow (1916-2009) of Rexford remembered the “House of Glass” filled with mirrors. As a kid in the 1920s, he would watch the adults try and find their way out. He would chuckle when he thought about it.

Park’s Own Amusement Park

The secret he said was to keep your eyes on the floor and not look into the mirrors. He also remembered the rotating barrel that you would try and walk through from one end to another. The kids managed this quite successfully, but adults again had difficulty, and were thrown from side to side in their attempt to pass through the barrel as it continued to rotate.

Of course, Spud had the early edge on the amusement park rides. Before the park was opened to the public in the spring, neighborhood kids were employed by the park to clean, test and prepare the rides. Spud and some of his friends would ride the bumper cars until the metal ceiling was cleaned off by the long rods on the cars that made electrical contact with the metal ceiling.

They would clean the mirrors in the “House of Glass,” and polish the horses on the carousel. It was truly a fun time for the youth of Rexford. They were able to enjoy the rides at no charge.

Edgar Shopmyer (1914-2003) of Vischer Ferry Road recalled the first time he rode the “Blue Streak,” the amusement park’s huge roller coaster. He told of the long slow ride to the top of the coaster, and then as he rounded the crest and faced the steep incline, his heart was in his throat. No turning back now! And woosh! Before he knew it the ride was over. This roller coaster was the second one at the park. The first one, known as the “Whirlwind,” was removed in about 1925 to make way for the larger, more thrilling “Blue Streak.”

The park, first known as Luna Park, after the famous amusement park in Coney Island, opened in 1906. It was developed in conjunction with the beginning of the trolley line from Schenectady. The Grandview Hotel, built in 1901

by New York City brewer Jacob Ruppert was the focal point. The park had several different names throughout its life. After Fred Dolle acquired the park in 1911, the name was changed to Dolle’s Park. In 1916 the park came under new management as Palisades Park, and later as Rexford Park.

partially due to the shortage of extra spending money caused by the Great Depression, and the rise of the automobile that took people to other destinations. The park survived two more years as a picnic area for socials and clambakes.

Amusement parks all over the United States were being established in the early 1900s to give city folks a reason to ride the trolley line. The electric trolley from Schenectady crossed the Mohawk River just west of the present Route 146 bridge (the stone piers of the trolley bridge are still visible). The bridge was 1,800 feet long and set on 10 piers. It was considered to be the longest trolley bridge in the world. It only cost a nickel to ride from Schenectady. Special park trolleys, called the “Twilight Trolley” were emblazoned with colored lights, a star on the back and a horseshoe on front.

The airplane ride would swing people out over the Mohawk River. There was also a Whip, Ferris Wheel, a “Razzle Dazzle” (ocean wave machine), and a ride that plunged down a chute into a pool of water. Other attractions included a Roller Skating Rink, Casino for dancing, Shooting Gallery, Penny Arcade, Bandstand, Ice Cream Parlor, motor launches on the river, a hotel with a bar, fortune tellers and carnival concessions. Special events at the park would consist of balloon ascensions, fire works, bands, boxing, wrestling, high divers, acrobats, and vaudeville acts. One popular feature was “Amazing Oliver” and his dog.

On July 4, 1907 the crowds at Luna Park were estimated to total between 10,000 and 12,000 people. A newspaper advertisement

for August 4, 1906 advertised Wheelock’s U. S. Carlisle Indian Band at Luna Park, as well as Prof.

Bush’s Perilous Ascension in two mammoth balloons. It indicated that Luna Park was “Schenectady’s Big Pleasure Resort,” and that “Everybody is Going to Luna Now – Follow the Crowd.” Admission was ten cents, children were free.

In 1935, after the amusement park closed, the owner of the property, the Cyrus W. Rexford estate, decided to raze the existing buildings to avoid paying heavy state, county, and town taxes on unprofitable property. The land was to be sold for summer camps. On April 3, 1935, John Millington’s wrecking crews began demolition of the buildings and roller coaster trusses. The other rides had been sold earlier to surviving amusement parks. The trolleys continued to use the steel bridge at Rexford until they were pulled off the line on December 7, 1941.

The bridge was dismantled in 1942 when steel was necessary to make weapons for World War II. Today, all that remains of the Rexford Amusement Park are the concrete footings for the roller coaster and other park buildings hidden in overgrown woods.

Some of the large trees that grew throughout the life of the park are still there. Postcard views, photographs and memories tell us of summers long ago when people flocked to Rexford on the electric trolley to enjoy a day of fun, the “Great Escape” of the 1920s. If the park had only survived!

A. I am the Health and Wellness Director at the Saratoga Springs Branch of the YMCA. I oversee the management of all Fitness areas at the branch, as well as the implementation and management of all Health and Wellness programming at the branch, ranging from Personal Training to Active Older Adult and Community Health programs.

Q. Now that the weather is warming up, what is your favorite activity to do outside?

A. My favorite activities to do outside are to take my dog for long walks, as well as bike the outdoor trails.

Q. Is the Y still offering virtual fitness options, and what are some of the options you offer?

A. Yes! We currently have our ‘Virtual Y’ platform, a site for members where they can access pre-recorded classes. Each week we have a different line-up of classes that are live-streamed for those who still want the feeling of being at the Y or can’t physically make it to the branch that day. That livestream lineup changes each week for variety.

Q. What are some places in the area you recommend that people can go to exercise outdoors in nature?

A. I recommend people getting outside and exploring the local trails at SPAC and surrounding areas. The more people can remain active while getting outside the gym and enjoying the weather, the better – it keeps them motivated!

Q. In your opinion, what is the best place to go to get a healthy meal in Saratoga, and what dish do you recommend?

A. I recommend 9 Miles East for a complete host of healthy options. The skirt steak is excellent, and I’d recommend the GO boxes for those who don’t eat meat.

Q. What music do you listen to while you exercise?

A. My current playlist is a mixture of 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s hits! As long as its motivating, and

A. In May we will be resuming our Outdoor Group Exercise classes (Cycle, Zumba, Yoga, etc.), which were popular last summer.

We will also be starting some Outdoor Bootcamps, and we are currently planning a Couch to 5k event for this summer.

Q. When is the last time you tried something new, and what was it?

A. During the summer last year, since fitness facilities were closed, I got into biking. Not being a big cardio person, I wasn’t sure how I’d like it, but I haven’t stopped since!

Q. What is the best advice you’ve ever received and who gave it to you?

A. A professor in college offered me one quote that has stuck with me, when it comes to problem-solving and especially motivating people to exercise and be their best selves: “Don’t make excuses, find solutions!” Whether someone lacks motivation, is struggling to lose weight, etc., they shouldn’t get down on themselves but rather find a way or method of support to reach their goal(s)!

Patsy Ann (Putnam) Tompkins

a secretary with the former Leary and Fullerton law office, the Carroll, Amyot and Doring firm, returning to the Leary, Fullerton, Ford and Aussicker law practice and then Ford, Jones and Hogan.

In 1972, Pat worked in Saratoga Springs City Hall as secretary to three former mayors, the late Sarto J. Smaldone, Raymond Watkin and Ellsworth J. Jones, retiring in 1990.

In addition to her voracious interest in photography, Patsy enjoyed bowling, golf, bocce, traveling, senior citizens bus trips and attending the Saratoga thoroughbred racing season and summer events. A lifelong member of the Church of St. Peter, she was a former board member of the Saratoga Springs Federal Credit Union, the old Firecracker Bowling league and the local ladies golf league.

Pat married Francis R. Tompkins on June 4, 1955 in St. Peter’s Church. He died September 16, 1992.

Aaron P. Hebert, 27, of Troy, was sentenced April 9 to 5 years of probation after pleading to felony DWI, in connection with an incident in Clifton Park.

John H. Pruyn, 22, of Colonie, was sentenced April 9 to six months in jail and 5 years of probation after pleading to driving while ability impaired in connection with an incident in Waterford.

Timothy T. Taylor, 31, of Halfmoon, was sentenced April 8 to 1 to 3 years in state prison, after pleading to driving while ability impaired.

Christopher M. James, of Albany, was sentenced April 8 to 1 year in jail, after pleading to felony burglary in connection with an incident in Clifton Park.

Chad M. Cruger, Jr., 21, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced April 6 to three terms each of six months in jail, after pleading to one count criminal mischief in the second-degree, and two counts felony burglary.

Erik J. Klebauskas, 44, of Wilton, pleaded April 5 to aggravated DWI, a felony, in connection with an incident in Milton.

Sentencing June 14.

Maxwell G. Peris, 20, of Greenfield, pleaded April 5 to unlawful imprisonment in the first-degree, a felony. Sentencing June 7.

BLOTTER 5 POLICE Vincent L. Avila, 21, of Schenectady, was charged with two counts of rape in the thirddegree, two counts of criminal sex act in the third-degree, use of a child in a sexual performance, endangering the welfare of a child, and petit larceny. Additionally, Michael T. May, 25, of Mechanicville, was charged with two counts of rape in the third-degree, use of a child in a sexual performance, and endangering the welfare of a child. According to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department, it is alleged that in the overnight hours between Jan. 27 and 28, Avila and May brought a 16-yearold girl to a hotel room in the Town of Malta, provided alcohol and drugs to her and had sexual relations with her which were recorded on their cell phones. Avila was arrested on April 7, and May was arrested on April 8. Both defendants were arraigned, and Avila was sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail, while May posted $1,000 cash bail at his arraignment.

John Bellon, 27, of Ballston Spa, was charged April 7 in Saratoga Springs with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use drug paraphernalia, use leased/rented/ loaned vehicle not equipped with interlock device, and two driving related-violations.

Christina Montville, 24, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 8 with criminal possession stolen property.

On April 6, State Police in Wilton arrested 41-year-old Timothy A Gillian of E. Fairfield, VT, 43-year-old Jermain Brooks of Bronx, NY, and 47-year-old Stacey A. Mossey of Sheldon, VT on the following charges: criminal possession of a controlled substance - felony; two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance - felony; criminal possession of a narcotic drug - felony; two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance - misdemeanor; criminal use of drug paraphernalia. Brooks was additionally charged with tampering with physical evidence. Mossey was additionally charged with criminal

possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence. State Police stopped Gillian for a series of suspected traffic infractions as he traveled on I-87 in the town of Wilton. When the Trooper approached the vehicle to speak with Gillian, it is alleged drug paraphernalia containing cocaine residue was in plain view. Gillian and his passengers, Jermain Brooks and Stacey Mossey, were taken into custody. A search of the vehicle revealed that they were in possession of approximately 8.1 ounces of cocaine, 6.1 ounces of heroin, and items consistent with the packaging and sale of controlled substances.

During a search conducted at the station, Mossey was allegedly found to be in possession of an additional 2.3 grams of crack cocaine which she had hidden on her person. Brooks was found to possess .5 gram of heroin which he had hidden on his person. Gillian and Brooks were sent to Saratoga County Jail without bail.

Mossey was sent to county jail in lieu of $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond. They are due back in court on a later date.

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Hosts Brain Health Awareness Webinar for NY Veterans May 4 NEW YORK — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is holding a free webinar for New York veterans and their families on Tuesday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. to provide them with information about brain health, memory screenings and veterans benefits.

Veterans may be at a higher risk for dementia based on their military experiences. A traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or being a prisoner of war can all increase the chances of developing dementia, according

to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The risk of dementia also increases as we age. One in seven veterans ages 45 and over report experiencing memory problems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Miss Always Ready, a 9-year-old mare owned by Three Chimneys Farm, delivered a filly

by Three Chimneys stallion Palace Malice on April 13 at the farm as part of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame’s Foal Patrol Season 4. The newborn filly weighed in at 132 pounds with a height of 42.1 inches. This is the third foal of the season delivered on Foal Patrol. Both the mare and foal are healthy and doing well.

Miss Always Ready, a daughter of More Than Ready out of the Dehere mare Miss Seffens, delivered her Palace Malice filly more than two weeks after her expected date of March 30. The foal is a full sibling to Structor, winner of the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Structor was Miss Always Ready’s first foal. She has also given birth

to fillies by Palace Malice (2019) and Gun Runner (2020).

There are four mares participating in Foal Patrol Season 4.

Along with Miss Always Ready, the mares Miss Chapin (Mill Ridge Farm) and To the Moon Alice (Old Tavern Farm) have already given birth this season.

The final mare in this season’s program is Janae at Safari North Farm in Versailles, who is scheduled to deliver her foal by Malibu Moon any day now.

Foal Patrol is a one-of-a-kind interactive web project featuring a collection of live cameras where people can view real-time streams of mares and their foals.

Thomas Pest Services Inaugural Cerebral Palsy Walk Event Surpasses Fundraising Goal Local, family owned and operated Thomas Pest Services owners Bill Clark and Sarah Thomas-Clark last month hosted an inaugural virtual walking event in support of Cerebral Palsy, with a month-long campaign to raise funds and awareness of the cause, in honor of their daughter.

“We couldn’t be more thankful to everyone who walked, participated, and donated to our event,” said Sarah ThomasClark, Vice President, Thomas Pest Services. “This cause always means so much to us because of our daughter, Riley, and wish to spread awareness for others who live and strive with CP.”

As part of the fundraiser, Thomas donated 10% of all sales for the month of March.

This, combined with their facebook fundraiser, totals nearly $7,000 to be donated to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

The Clarks’ daughter Riley was diagnosed with right side spastic hemiplegia when she was one and a half years old. While Riley has suffered impairment to her coordination and fine motor skills, Riley is a fighter, and has been attending weekly occupational and physical therapy to help with her condition.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A large, two-story building owned

by Saratoga County on Woodlawn Avenue is currently up for auction.

The building, which stands at 31 Woodlawn Ave., was completed in 1927 and used as a clothing factory until 1936 when the County first rented it from the City of Saratoga Springs. The county

purchased the building in 1940 and has served a variety of purposes.

Currently, one floor of the building is leased to Shelters of Saratoga for use as an overflow homeless shelter.

That lease expired March 31.

The building has approximately 10,300 square feet of useable space, two parking lots, a finished basement, and frontage on Woodlawn Ave. and Railroad Pl. In 2020, the land was assessed at $459,200, the total assessment at

just over $1.7 million, and the full market value at $2.754 million.

The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to hire a company to put up for auction the building in late February.

Bidding, which began April 6, concludes on April 28, according to Auctions International.

Prescribed Fires Planned at Saratoga National Historical Park

STILLWATER — Saratoga National Historical Park is planning a series of prescribed fires in the coming weeks. The areas to be burned this year include approximately 40 acres of grasses, shrubs, and woodlands on the hillsides around Stop 3 and Stop 9 on the Park Tour Road.

Depending on favorable weather and site conditions, the first burns could take place during the second or third week in April. Because certain prescription parameters must be met (including wind speed, relative humidity, fuel moisture, and drought index), it is not possible to precisely schedule prescribed fires in advance. Roads, visitor use facilities, and hiking trails may be temporarily closed while burns are underway.

Prescribed fire is an approved

tool for natural resource management throughout the National Park System and is part of Saratoga National Historical Park’s fire management program.

The primary objectives of the prescribed fire program are: restoration and perpetuation of scenic and cultural landscapes, including native plant species; reduction of wildland fuel loading; and enhancement of wildlife habitat.

Assistance may be provided by firefighters from other National Park Service units, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the New York State Forest Rangers and The Albany Pine Bush Preserve.

Dalton’s Mayoral Run On New Ballot Line continued from front page...

“Right now, we need someone leading the city in the mayor’s position who truly understands the extremely precarious position we’re in,” Dalton explained. “The only person who can understand that is someone who has been on the City Council the past two years and who has gone through this crisis, from the inside.”

City voters in November will elect a new mayor and four commissioners – which comprise the five-member City Council – as well as two Supervisors to represent the city at the county level. Of those seven positions, at least four will see new faces; three incumbents are not seeking re-election, and Dalton is vying for a different seat.

In New York state this year, several party ballot lines have been eliminated. The remaining parties are Democrat, Republican, Conservative and Working Families – the latter of which is currently being litigated among potential candidates.

Candidates may also create their own ballot lines, but those must secure a specific number of signatures for that line to be valid in November. In Saratoga Springs, the number of required signatures is 305, and the dates to secure signatures is April 13 to May 25.

This week, Dalton unveiled the ballot line Saratoga Stronger Together, which lists as candidates: Robin Dalton - Mayor; Adam Israel - Commissioner of Finance; Colin Klepetar - Commissioner of Accounts, and Tara Gaston – County Supervisor, the latter a position that Gaston currently holds. More candidates may be added in the future. Any additional candidates would require additional signatures to the 305 that the four currently listed as candidates must secure as a group.

“The way we will treat each other, and how we treat politics in Saratoga Springs will be with civility and with respect,” Dalton said, of candidates on the Saratoga Stronger Together ballot line. “We can agree to disagree. We can build consensus together and still hear every voice. We’re not really concerned with people’s former political party.

We’re united in – not policy necessarily – but how we treat legislating at the City Council table.”

Like Dalton, finance commissioner candidate Adam Israel is a

former registered Republican. “I was always a registered Republican, but I did not agree with the previous administration nationally, so I switched my party to NOP (No Party Preference).”

“As we started developing things for the election cycle in November, it became clear to me that the representative parties locally represent what the parties represent nationally, which is, fairly extreme positions,” Dalton said. “What I hear over and over from Saratogians is they’re not looking for (extremes), they’re looking for a middle ground, and someplace that focuses on the city of Saratoga and not on the politics dividing us as a country.”

As of this week, city Democrat, Republican, and Working Families candidates on file with the Board of Elections include: Mayor: Ronald Kim (D), Heidi Owen (R, C); Accounts: Dillon Moran (D), Samantha Guerra (R,C); DPW: Domenique Yermolayev (D), Anthony “Skip” Scirocco INCUMBENT (R, C); Finance: Minita Sanghvi (D), Joanne Kiernan (R,C), Sierra Hunt (WF); Public Safety: James Montagnino (D), Tracey Labelle (R,C). For Supervisor (two seats): Tara Gaston INCUMBENT (D, WF), Shaun Wiggins (D), Matthew Veitch INCUMBENT (R,C), John Safford (R,C), Bruce Altimar (WF), Gabriel O’Brien (WF).

Petitions regarding some Working Families Party line candidates are reportedly being challenged at Saratoga County Supreme Court.

“There’s been a faction of Republicans who have disaffiliated from the Republican Party and re-registered as the Working Families Party, so when people go to vote in November there’s a fairly high likelihood that they’re not actually voting for the people who stand for the Working Families ideology – they’re voting for people who represent something different,” Dalton said.

The majority of the city WF line is comprised of new members who came from various previous affiliations and recently registered with the party. Of those, previously registered Republicans outnumber previously registered Democrats by a near 2-to-1 margin.

“We’re going toward an election season in November where we really only have two options.

For Saratoga Springs, I feel that it’s incredibly necessary for us as a community to have a third option, one that prioritizes city over party,” Dalton said. “Once I began articulating that, I had a lot of other voices join in and want to participate in this effort to create an actual independent party line, where people can run free of the constraints of our traditional two-party system.”

Israel, the line’s Finance Commissioner candidate, earned a degree in finance at RPI, and said politics was always in the back of his mind.

“It was really becoming bothersome to me that the moderates in the middle are losing their say at the table. I got to talking with Robin and my view is that there should be a line where people are beholden to the people they serve

and not to the party line. That’s really what brought us together.

The idea that we may not always agree, but that’s OK, because we are going to do what’s best for the people of Saratoga,” Israel said.

Dalton and Israel say one way they connected was in sharing their experiences of answering a call to duty under unpredictable and challenging circumstances.

Israel found himself working on humanitarian efforts in 2017 in the Virgin Islands after being hit with back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes. Dalton’s experience came when the city went on PAUSE due to COVID-19. “I was thinking: how are we going to survive this from a public health perspective, how are we going to survive this as a city, and knowing that I was in charge of that response. It was terrifying, but it was: am I going to rise to the occasion and give it everything I’ve got? Of course.”

“Robin and I quickly learned that we jelled. We didn’t know we would, but we can share these experiences – standing at the cliff ’s edge, looking at this impending doom and the fear that grips you. And you can either bow to the fear, or, do the work. It really turned out we had a lot in common,” Israel said.

A grassroots effort to secure signatures began this week and will continue into May. The group says it will look to secure those signatures in open air locations, utilizing drive-by methods, and in other protocol-safe ways. Any registered voter in Saratoga Springs can sign the petition regardless of their political affiliation, as long as they have not signed the petition of one of the endorsed candidates of any of the other parties.

Final Draft of UDO Expected Next Week; Here’s How to Watch SARATOGA SPRINGS — The final Draft of the UDO is expected to be released on April 19. Several summary presentations will kick-off the last phase of this project, and the public is invited to participate via the schedule below.

WILTON — The Wilton Volunteer Fire Department will be opening its station to potential area recruits and their families as part of RecruitNY. The open house will take place on April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wilton Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) located at 270 Ballard Road.

WVFD will be taking part in the RecruitNY initiative, as volunteer fire departments across New York at their respective firehouses hold a unified recruitment drive. A virtual option with the WVFD, for those unable to make it or with public health concerns, will be held on April 25 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is available by appointment only, and appointments should be made by April 22. FBI, and LifeNet. LifeNet’s helicopter is scheduled to land at approximately 10 a.m. The public can view the landing from their cars in the Ballard Elementary parking lot.

RecruitNY in Wilton will highlight the rewards and responsibilities that come with being a firefighter, paramedic, or law enforcement officer. Also, raising public awareness about the need for recruits as volunteer fire departments across the state have struggled these past several years with decreased membership and increased call volumes.

The WVFD is hoping to bolster its ranks so it can continue to provide the optimum and necessary level of protection for its 15,000 residents. Last year the department responded to over 330 calls for events such as the following: fires, motor vehicle accidents, fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, natural gas/ propane leaks, downed power

lines, and EMS assists. The notfor-profit designated 501(c)(3) department is made up of entirely volunteers, including its officers and Chief.

“This open house is a great opportunity for those interested in actively serving their community in an impactful way to meet their local volunteer firefighters and learn more about their local fire service and what is entailed in becoming a member,” said WVFD Chief Murray. “Our firefighters come from diverse backgrounds and ages with one shared common concern of helping people in their times of need, 24 hours a day – 7 days a week – 365 days a year. It is our hope after hearing how we teach, train, and serve together, more community members will become a part of our organization.”

First 5 Months of New City Homeless Court Proves Successful

n October 22, 2020, City Court Judge, Francine Vero, presided over the first session of the Homeless Court in Saratoga Springs. Since then, about 90% of individuals agreeing to participate in the Homeless Court have been connected to care management and community services and the court has seen a significant drop in repeat offenses.

The Homeless Court was designed in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, Judge Vero, and RISE Housing and Support Services (formerly Transitional Services Association). However, it was Judge Vero who first identified the problem and thought through the solution, “Individuals experiencing homelessness were accumulating multiple dockets and often failing to appear in court. This population is particularly challenged in getting to court due to a lack of structure and resources.

I decided the court needed to implement a new approach to address these issues and connect individuals experiencing homelessness to the services they need. I met with stakeholders, we discussed the issues, and the homeless court was created.”

On the two court dates set aside each month, Homeless Court Coordinators, Samantha Macio and Victoria Furfaro, head out in a van donated by the Mackey Auto Group to offer transportation to people who are scheduled for court. Because a person who is homeless does not have a permanent address or often does not have a phone, the court cannot send appearance notices nor can the court call to remind them of the date. Sam and Victoria make it their mission to locate individuals and help them to make their appearance in court.

Healing Springs Recovery Centers offer peer-topeer recovery coaching for individuals wanting to work on the development and implementation of a recovery wellness plan and welcomes all recovering people and families seeking recovery from the effects of addictions. The Salvation Army assists with care management as well as hot meals and groceries. CAPTAIN Community Human Services connects staff directly to youth ages 13-21 years.

RISE Housing and Support Services helps people living with mental health, substance use, and other life challenges to remain safe and healthy in the community. AHI Health Home Care Management ensures all caregivers involved with a person so they can focus on their client’s needs. Shelters of Saratoga has programs including emergency shelter, case management, and drop-in centers.

Samantha and Victoria are experienced Care Managers at RISE Housing and Support Services.

They work with participants outside of the courtroom several days a week through community outreach. It is an opportunity to develop a trusting relationship with people experiencing homelessness who might not have faith in the system. They provide a single and familiar point of contact for those appearing before the Homeless Court. On any given day, a person who is homeless may be hungry, need clothing, or need shelter. By doing outreach to the encampments, they learn what people are struggling with. They are then better able to assist the Saratoga County Assistant District Attorneys, Lyn A. Murphy and Samuel V. Maxwell, and Saratoga County Assistant Public Defender, Joseph W. Hammer in deciding a dignified approach to working with a homeless person.

To date, the Homeless Court Coordination program together with community partners have connected nearly 30 individuals to stable housing, substance use treatment, and mental health services. Community partnerships have been pivotal to the Homeless Court’s success, so when circumstances allow, individuals can take part in court-mandated services and programs instead of going to jail or being fined.

In February, the American Bar Association’s Commission on Homelessness and Poverty met with Judge Vero and the Homeless Court Coordinators with praise for the establishment of a Homeless Court in Saratoga Springs. The Commission is committed to educating members of the Bar Association as well as the public about homelessness and poverty and how the legal community and advocates can assist those in need.

This dignified and research-based approach to working with people experiencing homelessness improves the quality of life within our community, and results in administrative cost benefits by decongesting court dockets and reducing the amount of time the police department spends responding to calls and arrests.

AS WE HEAD INTO SPRING, warmer weather and a season of more light, we may take a look outside at our lawns and flower beds and see that we have some work to do.

Before you can make room for new growth you have to prepare the soil, clear out the old and have a vision for what you would like to plant.

If you feel stuck in old patterns and it feels like you are far away from the vision you have for what you want emotionally, financially, physically and spiritually, start clearing away the old.

One of the quickest ways to feel better about old habits is to start clearing out your physical space. Take small steps by clearing out a closet or drawer at a time and get rid of anything you don’t like or use. This action step will help you feel less overwhelmed and anxious in every day life.

Once you have begun to work on your physical space, take some time to think about what you want to change in all areas of your life. Start thinking about the people you spend time with and ask yourself if you feel refreshed and energized after time together. If the answer is that you feel drained and grumpy, it’s time to pull the weeds and make room for healthier relationships in your life.

Part of growing and improving our mindset is to reflect on what we have outgrown. Sometimes we hang onto the weeds because we think we have to, we feel guilty pulling them, or we are afraid to let go.

Any person, place or thing that keeps you from growing is a weed in your life. Take inventory on your garden of the people in your life and begin to pull the weeds out.

Spring is a time of renewed hope, energy and light. Take the time you need this month to do an inventory of the weeds in your life and begin to pull them from the root.

Every time you deal with a weed in your life, you make room for new growth, opportunity, energy and joy.

Sights Set on Spa City: Japanese Resort to Resume Search for First US Location

SARATOGA SPRINGS — An international resort company that first set its sights on developing a luxury hotel in Saratoga Springs in 2018, before reportedly backing off that plan when the pandemic hit last year, may once again be targeting the Spa City to site a facility that caters to Americans interested in experiencing the culture of Japan without having to travel internationally.

Hoshino Resorts operates more than three dozen facilities both in and outside Japan with four distinct brands: luxury flagships, hot spring resorts, resort hotels, and city tourism hotels,

featuring venues which vary from countrified mountainside resorts to the heart of big-city Tokyo.

In September 2018, the company entered into a Memorandum of Agreement of Sale as purchaser of two parcels of land totaling nearly 87 acres, located just south of Saratoga Spa State Park. A deed agreement was subsequently filed with the Saratoga County Clerk’s Office one month later.

The two specific parcels named in the memorandum included 6.88 acres at Route 9 and Columbia Avenue, and 79.34 acres at 38 Columbia Avenue.

Those lands are located in a mostly wooded area, just south of the Saratoga Spa State Park and East West Road, just off Route 9.

The closing and transfer of title date were slated to take place by late 2020, with Hoshino holding the exclusive right to purchase the properties under the agreement.

When that didn’t happen by

the end of the calendar year 2020, the plans were believed to be off.

location on the U.S. mainland in the next three to five years, Chief Executive Officer Yoshiharu Hoshino told Bloomberg. “One ideal spot, in his view, could be Saratoga Springs, about a threehour drive from New York City and Boston,” according to the article written by Lisa Du, Grace Huang, and Stephen Engle, and published in Bloomberg on April 4.

Hoshino Resorts was first established as a traditional Japanese inn in 1914. Its stated mission is to “dream big” and according to company’s literature, provides “a unique experience focused on the local charms of each destination and a high level of omotenashi Japanese-style hospitality.”

“My personal goal is to bring traditional Japanese hot spring resorts to North America,” Hoshino, the fourth generation in his family to run the firm, said in an interview on Bloomberg TV. “It’s now time to think about the next 100 years of developing hot spring hotels globally.” Specific plans for the type of development initially under consideration for development in Saratoga Springs, as well as the status plans of the Spa City specifically as a future destination, are not currently known.

Stewart’s Shops: Employees Now Own Over 40% of the Company SARATOGA SPRINGS — Stewart’s Shops employees now own over 40% of the company through profit sharing, the company announced.

Last week, 2,850 Partners received their 2020 Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) statements.

Their accounts received approximately 20% growth and a $19 million contribution, which is about 19% of their 2020 pay.

There are now 105 Partners with a balance of over $1 million and nearly a third of these

millionaires are still actively working. This is possible because of Stewart’s stability, enabling years of double-digit percent of pay contributions, plus doubledigit growth of balances each year.

The ESOP program is 100 percent funded by the company for anyone working at least 1,000 hours a year. After six years in the plan, a Partner’s balance is usually greater than a year’s pay.

Founded in 1945, Stewart’s Shops is an employee and familyowned convenience store chain based in Saratoga Springs.

Capital Bank Welcomes Saratoga Native as New Commercial Loan Officer SARATOGA SPRINGS — Capital Bank, a division of Chemung Canal Trust Company, today announced the recent hiring of Billie M. Taft as its newest Commercial Loan Officer. Taft brings strong commercial-banking experience to Capital Bank, having worked over 10 years in the field.

In 2010, Taft joined Saratoga National Bank and Trust Company, where she enhanced her commercial-credit experience. In 2013, Taft was promoted to Commercial

Loan Officer, followed by a promotion to Vice President in 2016.

Taft graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business & Economics from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs and now lives in Greenfield Center.

Canfield Casino Reopens for Weddings & Events SARATOGA SPRINGS — Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco announced this week that the historic Canfield Casino has reopened for 2021 weddings and events.

The venue closed in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and because of New York State health and safety mandates which limited social gatherings.

“Guests will still need to follow CDC and State guidelines to attend, but this is the first step towards normalcy,” Scirocco said, in a statement.

Casino will allow for events of up to 150 attendees in compliance with NYS guidelines. Additionally, as outlined by Gov. Cuomo, all attendees must have proof of a recent negative test result or proof of immunization prior to the event. Masks will be worn at all times except when eating or drinking, and socially distanced dancing is allowed in designated areas.

“An upgraded sound system was installed in the venue, and detailed restoration work of the decorative woodwork in the parlor and bar was completed, along with refinishing the bar and

ballroom floors during the casino’s closure, Scirocco added.

The casino was originally built in 1870 as a gambling establishment by John Morrisey, and upgraded by Richard Canfield in the early 20th century to include the ornate ballroom. Canfield closed the establishment in 1907 and it was sold to the then-Village of Saratoga Springs in 1911.

Still Stronger Together in 2021 On Thursday, April 8, 2021, at 9:00 a.m., I met up with Ryan McMahon, Darryl Leggieri, and Deann Devitt on the City Center’s surface parking lot. We were meeting with Peter and Cole Gailor, of Gailor Landscaping.

They had generously agreed to help us move concrete blocks to support the local restaurants on Henry, Caroline and Phila Street.

One year ago, D.A. Collins had donated and installed these concrete blocks in the same places.

Over the winter, the City Center had stored them so that they could be reused. With several new restaurants participating this year, D.A. Collins would again help us out. Standing there looking at the blocks before they were moved, the four of us reminisced a little bit. Not one of us ever thought we’d still be doing this a year later.

But the virus had other ideas.

Last March, we formed a partnership with the Saratoga County Chamber, Discover Saratoga, the Downtown Business Association, the City Center and the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership. We had been meeting every week since. We had been talking, texting and collaborating nearly every day

since. We had help as well from Samantha Bosshart, from the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, and Martin Mbugua, from Skidmore College.

We said that if you called any one of us, we’d all come to help.

We did this. We are still doing this. It was this Saratoga Crew that gathered information that all of us shared via email and social media to help local organizations to stay informed about EIDL and PPP loans; reopening protocols; special promotions and events.

We coordinated on a range of advocacy efforts. We created and distributed hundreds of recovery kits filled with PPE to area employers as they reopened. We were the ones that drafted and then implemented the Saratoga County Economic Recovery Plan.

We organized Saratoga County’s reopening ribbon cutting and the Save Our Locals campaign.

We’re all great friends now as well as colleagues. We were there to help everyone in our community as well as each of our organizations. This work was not without stress. We struggled too at times. We always knew we could count on each other.

Sometimes we offered a joke or a reason to laugh. We lived the mantra we had pushed out across our community. One year later, we know that WE are Stronger Together.

I learned recently that while our groups were collaborating in an extraordinary fashion, so were others. The leaders of a group of local impact sector organizations have been collaborating to create and implement a comprehensive effort to help those who are homeless in our community.

organizations and local venues have been collaborating to create an extraordinary series of events we’ll all be able to enjoy later this year. This gives me hope.

As we recover and reopen, I hope we find joy not just in gathering again but also in collaborating like never before.

Let’s do our best to not just meet together but to take action together. Let’s not just collaborate together but celebrate together.

We’ve been living, working, learning, and doing alone for too long. I’ve witnessed the power of

collaboration at what might have been our darkest hour as a nation and a world.

Our small businesses are not out of the woods yet. Our civic institutions continue to be challenged. We have people living in poverty whether that is defined by the absence of income, food, a place to live, a job, health, personal safety or someone to care for them. We’ve got more work to do. There are more people who will need our help. To really help them, we will need to always be Stronger Together.

SOUTH GLENS FALLS — South Glens Falls High School proudly presents Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown on April 16-17. Songs for a New World will be the Drama Club’s first-ever virtual production, streamed on www.ShowTix4U.com.

The South High troupe will be participating in the High School Musical Theatre Awards at Proctors for the fifth consecutive year. They received eight High School Musical Theatre Award nominations and won Best Musical (Tier C) and Best Actress in 2019. Their 2020 production, Damn Yankees, was just days shy of opening before the global pandemic caused it to close.

Songs for a New World is the first musical written by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown and premiered OffBroadway in 1995. It is a contemporary song cycle that unites fictitious and historical characters through themes of self-discovery, love, and connection made in times of the unknown. This

production features the innovative work of three student technical crew members and fifteen student performers. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs City School District will hold their Board of Education and Budget vote in May. The Board of Education (BOE) and Budget vote will take place this year on Tuesday, May 18. Petitions will be accepted until April 28, therefore a list of who is running will not be made public until April 29, the following day.

Each year there are three BOE vacancies for three-year terms, and community members are encouraged to run for the seats on the board. Individuals who are seeking election to the BOE must submit a petition with a minimum of 50 signatures from district residents.

Normally, the minimum number of signatures needed is 100, however Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order that small city school districts lower the minimum number of signatures needed this year.

Petition packets can be picked up at the MacFadden Administration Building at 3 Blue Streak Boulevard in Saratoga Springs, or packets can be sent

by mail or email. Interested candidates can get their petition through the mail or an email after filling out the Board of Education Petition form found on the school district’s website (saratogaschools.org/district, see Board of Education tab, Board of Education Petition Information).

Completed petition packets are due to the Business Office by the deadline of April 28 at 5 p.m.

On April 29, at 8 a.m., a drawing will be held for the order of the candidates on the ballot.

The proposed budget is expected to be adopted on April 20.

The school district’s website states the following about its contents: “The 2021-2022 budget will be unique as it will reflect expenses related to COVID-19 and other costs associated with funding materials, supplies, technology and staffing for hybrid and remote learning during the pandemic as well as potential reductions in Federal and NYS aid.”

Ballston Spa Music Department Receives National Recognition BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

Ballston Spa is one of the 4% of public school districts across the nation receiving the prestigious award in 2021. The district has received the recognition for five consecutive years, starting in 2017.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Summer Camp is a Go!

Town of Greenfield Officials Redesign Summer Camp for 2021 After 2020’s quiet and mostly cancelled summer, Greenfield children are sure to welcome a reimagined summer day camp centering on old-fashioned country fun. The Town of Greenfield redesigned its popular summer camp with a new location and curriculum to meet the challenges of 2021. Camp will take place daily, weather permitting, at the Middle Grove Town Park for five weeks beginning June 28 from 8:30-12:30 p.m. Signups begin March 1 for Greenfield residents only at www.greenfieldny.org.

Changes began with moving the 30-year-old camp from Greenfield Elementary School to the Middle Grove Town Park, at 428 Middle Grove Road in Middle Grove, N.Y., which just underwent a major overhaul in November including state-of-the-art playground upgrades, a renovated large pavilion, as well as basketball and tennis courts. The park also features 8 acres of open space with tree-lined fields and a 1.5-mile wooded walking trail.

The camp will adhere to all state safety regulations this summer including masks and social distancing, where necessary. Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome.

Campers will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/ camper ratio featuring more than 30-trained camp counselors. Children will be grouped in pods of ten and each group will have a private tent for their convenience. The camp will be led by Eric Hayden,

a popular Saratoga Springs School District Physical Education coach. There will be an easy, contactless drop off and pick up loop for parents.

Camp activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as: obstacle courses; wiffleball, soccer, flag football, kickball, basketball and other sports; hiking; gardening; Taekwondo; and other organized games. Three times a week an art director will lead a myriad of projects involving painting, spin art, tye-die, chalk art and more. The camp will have themed days like “Super Hero” or “Hat Day.” Each Friday will bring free ice cream from an ice cream truck or Stewart’s Shops. Uncharted Wild LLC will visit weekly with live wild animal demonstrations.

“Our schedule will be ever-changing and kids are sure to come home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at the park with friends,” said Rebecca Sewell, Town of Greenfield Recreation Director. “We have adapted to meet the community’s need for simple outdoor summer fun.”

The Town of Greenfield is home to 7,500 residents and spans more than 41,000 acres of land, including Brookhaven Park and Golf Course in Porter Corners, NY. Other summer activities sponsored by the Town of Greenfield include golf camp, tennis camp and a PGA Junior Golf League.

events Sustainable Saratoga’s Tree Toga On Saturday, April 24, the Sustainable Saratoga’s Urban Forestry Project is celebrating our community’s resilience and hope for the future by putting trees in the ground at the homes of 15 excited Saratogian families. This will bring the total number of Tree Toga plantings to 270 trees since 2014. This year we’ll be doing things differently and taking into account COVID-19 precautions.

If you are eager to make spring meals, there are plenty of flavorful ingredients available at the farmers’ market. We feel inspired to share recipes for a fresh herbed salad and seared pork chops this week. Combining stored fruit and vegetables with freshly harvested greens, fresh farm eggs, and heritage meats is what spring cooking is all about.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

FOR THE VINAIGRETTE: • 2 tablespoons finely diced yellow onion*

• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar or sherry vinegar • 3 tablespoons lemon juice, plus more to taste

• 3 medium beets*, cooked, peeled, and cut in wedges • ½ cup thinly sliced radish* (6 to 8 medium radishes) • ½ cup thinly sliced turnip* (or use small kohlrabi*) • ½ cup thinly sliced cucumber*

• ½ teaspoon grated garlic* (from 2 small cloves)

• Kosher salt and black pepper

INGREDIENTS: YIELDS: 6 servings

• Kosher salt and black pepper

• 2 tablespoons basil* leaves, torn

• ¼ cup walnut oil or extra-virgin olive oil

• 4 (7-minute) boiled eggs*

FOR THE SALAD:

• 1 cup toasted walnut halves

• 6 pork chops* • salt and pepper to taste • 1 Tablespoon olive oil

• 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter

• 2-3 apples*, cored and sliced

• 1 large onion*, sliced

• 1 cup apple cider*

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Trim the chops of excess fat and sprinkle with salt and pepper on both sides.

Heat a 14-inch cast-iron skillet over high heat and then swirl in olive oil. Lay the pork chops in the pan and don’t move for a few minutes. This assures a good golden sear. Turn the chops over and brown well on the second side for a total of about 10 minutes. Remove the chops to a warm plate.

2. Swirl the butter into the pan. Add the onions and apples. Saute until the onion slices are lightly caramelized and the apples have begun to soften for about 8 minutes. Stir in the apple cider. Return the chops to the pan.

3. Cook until the pork is tender, about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the chops, turning halfway through and covering the chops with the apple mixture. If the apple mixture needs a little thickening, remove the chops to the warm plate again and simmer the mixture on high for a few minutes to reduce.

• 4 cups lightly packed watercress* or a mixture of salad greens*

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make the vinaigrette: Put shallots in a small bowl. Add mustard, vinegar, 3 tablespoons lemon juice, and garlic. Stir together, and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk in the walnut oil. Set aside for a few minutes, then taste and adjust lemon juice and salt.

2. Wash and dry the salad greens. Tear large leaves into smaller pieces, if desired. Wrap in a clean towel and refrigerate if not serving immediately.

3. Just before serving salad, put beet wedges in the bottom of a wide salad bowl. Add the radish, turnip, and cucumber. Season with salt and pepper. Add dill, basil, and half of the vinaigrette. Toss gently to coat.

4. Add the salad greens and combine to distribute sliced vegetables evenly. Cut eggs in halves or quarters, and arrange over salad. Scatter walnuts over the top.

Drizzle with the remaining vinaigrette.

A Pressing Engagement Hello my Foodie Friends !

There are many ways to make coffee. Our cups of coffee are very important to us since we start our days with that “necessary cup.” If you like coffee, you will find that you have many choices. You can spend lots of money to let other places make it for you. Many people find that

by John Reardon their choice is a French press machine. People who use a press know for Saratoga TODAY and act like it is their own secret. You can see it in the smile they have when they talk about it as they are purchasing one for a friend. You can also see it in their frowns when they need one because the old one is lost due to a move or they are visiting here for an extended vacation and need one now! My customers have many different passions for their favorite products but French Press people are knowledgeable and loyal. French Press coffee captures more of the flavor, aromas and oils from the coffee beans than drip coffee makers. You lose a lot in a drip maker to the paper filter. The difference between French press and drip coffee is that the grounds using a French press are steeped in boiling water while water just passes through the grounds in an auto or manual drip system. Grounds used for French press coffee must be larger and rougher. These grounds tend to release more caffeine, especially when steeped longer. Connoisseurs contend that this method of brewing produces a richer, fuller flavor. A serving that’s higher in caffeine may also have health advantages as well.

ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR PRESS, HERE ARE THE SIMPLE DIRECTIONS: • Place the pot on a dry, flat surface. Hold the handle firmly, then pull out the plunger.

• Add a heaping tablespoon (7-8 grams) of coffee to the pot per 200 ml (6.7 oz) of water.

• Pour hot water—not quite boiling—into the pot, and gently stir.

• Carefully reinsert the plunger into the pot, stopping just above the water and ground coffee (do not plunge yet), and let stand for 3-4 minutes .

• Press the plunger down slowly, exerting steady pressure.

r a g u S n w o Br ke Crumb Ca INGREDIENTS CRUMB: • 1 1/4 cups light brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 cup butter, cold, cut into cubes • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour CAKE: • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature • 2 large eggs

• 1 1/4 cups brown sugar (you can use either dark or light, I used dark)

ICING:

• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 3/4 cup brown sugar (you can use either dark or light, I used dark)

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/3 cup milk

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 cup butter

• 1 cup Greek yogurt

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 cup powdered sugar

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat a 9×13 baking pan with nonstick spray. Set aside.

2. CRUMB: In a large bowl combine all the crumb ingredients and using a pastry cutter or your hands, combine the mixture until crumbs form. I usually start with my pastry cutter and then finish with my hands to form larger crumbs. Set aside.

3. CAKE: In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix the butter and sugar together for 2 minutes. Add the eggs, vanilla, baking soda and salt and mix for an additional minute until combined, scraping the sides of the bowl as necessary. Lower the speed of your mixer to low and in alternating additions, add in the flour and yogurt, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until smooth. Spread the batter in the prepared pan and spread the crumb mixture evenly on top.

4. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the center is set and a toothpick comes out clean.

5. ICING: In a medium saucepan combine the brown sugar, milk and butter on medium heat. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Immediately remove from the heat. Stir in the vanilla and whisk in the powdered sugar until no more lumps remain. Allow the icing to cool for 10-15 minutes, whisking occasionally until it thickens a bit and then drizzle on top of the warm cake.

6. Serve warm or at room temperature.

After each use, wash the pot with water and mild detergent, and dry thoroughly. Use coarse ground coffee. (remember fine will come through your screen).

You should probably consume your coffee within about 20 minutes as it could become bitter. Some people prefer it that way so whatever your tastes are is fine. You can also vary the strength by adding more or less coffee. If you remember, last week I talked about Tea and they also make a tea press which is catching on with Tea customers also.

Rachel Stone, Jacqueline Ahn, Alyssa Pacewicz In April of 2020, Rachel Stone, Jacqueline Ahn and Alyssa Pacewicz were conglomerating information to raise awareness for Saratoga Bridges.

These three Skidmore students created “Better As One” (BAO) because they believe individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are entitled to the best quality of life while achieving optimal levels of well-being. Further, they wanted to ensure the spread of the virus was minimized by generating funds to purchase essential resources.

BAO has produced an amazing social media presence to showcase individuals’ capabilities and encourage their peers to share how they were coping during the pandemic. Friends sang, painted, took photographs and created recipes to boost individuals’ spirits. Then, they formed Bridges Buddies to connect virtually despite being apart.

To date, BAO has generated close to $5,000. Recently, they requested recipes from friends and family to create a Recipe Share that spreads awareness; for they feel we all need to be ‘Better as One’ and spark change to ensure individuals with developmental disabilities have safe, healthy and happy futures.

Rachel, Jacqueline and Alyssa are exquisitely altruistic, dynamic, dedicated and enthusiastic. They have invested boundless energy, time and resources to empower people’s lives. In “Mike Nichols: A Life,” author and journalist Mark Harris offers the first full-scale biography of the celebrated film director, stage director, and improv comedian. Harris interviewed over 250 people for this book, including Elaine May, Meryl Streep, Stephen Sondheim, Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Tom Hanks, Candice Bergen, Emma Thompson, Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Lorne Michaels, and Gloria Steinem. In it, he gives an intimate and evenhanded accounting of success and failure alike; the portrait is not always flattering, but its ultimate impact is to present the full story of one

of the most interesting, complicated, and consequential figures the worlds of theater and motion pictures have ever seen. He will be joined in conversation by film historian and WAMC commentator, Audrey Kupferberg.

Filming for two upcoming HBO series - “The Gilded Age,” and “The White House Plumbers” - will set their sights in the Capital Region over the next few months, and a New York City based casting company is looking for locals to portray various roles as extras.

“The Gilded Age” will site filming locations in Troy in May and June. For this production, Grant Wilfley Casting is seeking men, women, and children from Troy, Albany, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs to portray various roles as extras in the series.

The story of “The Gilded Age” begins in 1882 against a backdrop of change, during a period of immense economic change, of huge fortunes made and lost, and the rise of disparity between old money and new.

“The Gilded Age,” comes from the creator of Downton Abbey.

Based in part on public records and the book “Integrity,” by Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh, the five-part limited series “The White House Plumbers” will tell the true story of how Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, accidentally toppled the presidency they were trying to protect.

Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux will star as Hunt and Liddy, respectively.

For this production, Grant Wilfley Casting is seeking Albany locals to portray various roles as extras in the HBO limited series, which takes place in the early 1970s.

HMT to Hold Open Auditions for “New Jerusalem” on April 18-19 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Home Made Theater will hold open auditions this month for their July/August production of New Jerusalem by David Ives, directed by Dianne O’Neill.

Auditions will be held through Zoom on Sunday, April 18 and Monday, April 19 from 7-9 p.m. All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities and gender identifications.

Baruch de Spinoza is a young merchant and the heir apparent of Saul Mortera, the chief Rabbi of Amsterdam. When the city accuses Spinoza of atheism, he is summoned to the synagogue to defend himself. Spinoza’s best

friend, his sister, and the woman he loves are all drawn into the controversy, a historical event that shook up not only the entire Jewish community of Amsterdam, but changed Spinoza’s and Mortera’s lives—and all of Western thought—irrevocably. The play is a re-imagining of the interrogation and eventual excommunication of the young philosopher on July 27, 1656. In this eloquent and masterful drama, David Ives attempts to open the temple doors and let us listen in on a dispute whose philosophical and political echoes still reverberate today.

Production dates are Sunday, July 25 at the Congregation

Shaara Tfille in Saratoga Springs, and Sunday Aug. 1 at the Congregation Beth Shalom in Clifton Park. There will be two performances each day.

Rehearsals will start on Sunday, June 13 and will run Sunday through Thursday evenings.

Music Never Died

SARATOGA SPRINGS — It wasn’t prompted by a premonition of a global shutdown of live music due to a deadly pandemic, but the fact that the timely, existential refurb of the venerable Caffè Lena included a better-thanneeded(?) audio upgrade and multi-camera video installation was, nonetheless, prophetic.

At this writing, fourteen months from the onset, we’re not out of the woods, but we have started to let small, prescreened patrons into the rarified air, (literally), that has, even in the throes of COVID-19, continuously echoed with live music for more than 60 years.

The streaming, the suddenly commonplace connection that allowed our gregarious nature to find digital refuge, will continue.

Purists may argue that the experience, the visceral, touchy/ feely, sing-along, chocolate chip, in-person version is diminished by being teased out over the internet.

I prefer to think that the two, very unique, experiences form a complimentary new hybrid.

Being physically present has

layers of sensory stimuli that we are still unable to produce remotely; the natural sound, of course and the aromas and the lights, the clamor and the camaraderie, the exchange of energy between audience and performer, the afterglow and the merch… did I mention the cookies? But the music, the words, the melody and harmony, the pluck of a string and beat of a drum, the poetic truth that stirs our souls and imaginations and taps our toes cannot complete its journey from thought to pen to paper until its performance reaches some ears, and the more ears, the better.

From coast to coast, Canada to South America, Europe, Asia and Africa, Caffè Lena’s concert streams are broadening the outreach of the venue’s dedication to the art while expanding the fan base of some of the world’s finest musicians.

And…in a more perfect world…when it’s safe, perhaps some of those new, streamer fans in Brazil or Senegal or Kuala Lumpur will find their way to Phila St. We have cookies.

Lake George Area Attraction Prepares for BOLTON LANDING — Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course announced the addition of its “Low Rider Zip Tour,” an introductory zipline course designed for first-time, novice zipline adventurers as well as seasoned obstacle course veterans consisting of 12 ziplines and 9 walking bridges. “The difference between our zipline-only course and other traditional zip tours is its proximity to the ground,” said Adirondack Extreme Owner, Jamie Johnson. “It’s a low-level zipline tour multi-generational families can enjoy together.” Each of the ziplines in the “Low Rider Zip Tour” will be 75 to 550 feet in length and traverse over naturally occurring, picturesque landscape features such as Alder Brook. Adirondack Extreme’s 8 other adventure courses offer an

additional 22 ziplines as part of an ensemble of obstacles and range in heights of 15 to 65 feet. Johnson said, ‘Low Rider Zip Tour’ guests will be zipping closer to the water and forest floor with maximum zipline heights of 10-30 ft.”

According to operations manager Jaime Delong, the “Low Rider Zip Tour” will be offered as a stand-alone tour for $48 as well as an add-on for as little as $10.

Saratoga Race Course To Open For Training on Saturday, April 17; Oklahoma to Re-open in May continued from back page...

When training resumes at the Oklahoma in early May, horses and riders will be met with a completely reconstructed track featuring a limestone base, renovated surface layer and modernized drainage systems.

In addition, the training track has been widened by 10-14 feet in most areas to address the increasing population of horses training over the Oklahoma annually from April-October.

Additionally, to enhance

safety for exercise riders and jockeys, the inner rail at the Oklahoma has been replaced with a rider protection system designed by Horsemen’s Track and Equipment. The renovation of the Oklahoma Training Track

was modeled after the work that was done to the Saratoga main track in 2020, which involved general improvements to the base and surface of the track, as well as a complete overhaul of the drainage system and installation of a new rider safety rail.

In consultation with the New York State Gaming Commission as well as state and local public health officials, NYRA will maintain a number of health and safety protocols implemented at all NYRA properties to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19 and reduce risk for employees, horsemen, backstretch workers and the community. Facial coverings and social distancing are mandatory at all times at Saratoga Race Course.

Beginning on April 17,

personnel working in support of training activities must provide a negative COVID-19 test or proof of full vaccination in order to access the property. This applies to both local personnel as well as those arriving from other regions.

All personnel will be subject to a daily temperature check prior to entering the property.

The 40-day summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will open on Thursday, July 15. New York State COVID19 protocols do not currently allow for spectators at racetracks.

NYRA says is is working closely with New York State to secure the requisite approvals to welcome fans back to Belmont Park this spring and to Saratoga Race Course this summer.

On Friday, April 9, Saratoga Central Catholic Varsity Girls’ Volleyball hosted Berlin/New Lebanon and won 3-2 (25-27, 25-7, 22-25, 25-18, 25-14).

On Saturday, April 10, the Ballston Spa Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team visited Gloversville and posted an 8-2 win. Ballston Spa was up 5-1 at the half.

Leading the way with the first goal was Alex Bailey, assisted by Justin Waters. Brayden Box scored twice.

Aidan Clark and Adam Amami scored as well. In the second half, Ballston Spa’s Adam Amami, Evan Phelps, and Ryan Nagengast each scored.

The Schuylerville Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team traveled to South High on Saturday, April 10, and came away with a 3-1 victory. The Horses avenged an earlier season loss to the Bulldogs with a high energy team effort. Schuylerville kept South High at bay with a solid defensive effort, limiting the home team to just 4 shots on goal. Schuylerville’s Balasai Witt and Liam Armstrong both had well-played matches.

Balasai Witt, Cam Wian, and Reid Rockhill scored Schuylerville’s goals. Caden French scored the lone goal for SGF. Lucas Cottrell, Sam Tyler, and Liam Armstrong recorded assists.

For the Saints, Liz Best had 22 service points and 7 aces. Catherine Darcy had 12 service points, 7 aces, 5 assists, and 1 kill. Jaqueline Fornabia had 11 service points, 4 aces, and 2 kills. Kara Wengert had 5 kills and 6 digs.

Arden Buhrmaster had 10 service points and 7 aces. Juliana Montanino had 11 service points, 3 aces, and 2 kills. Katie Mattes had 5 service points, 5 assists, and 1 kill. Emma Brown had 4 digs.

For Berlin/New Lebanon, Macayla Roberts had 13 service points and 11 assists. Bailey Caitlin had 9 digs and 1 kill. Ciarra Jager had 12 kills and 5 digs.

Varsity Football SCHUYLERVILLE V. CORINTH/FORT EDWARD Schuylerville Varsity Football remains undefeated after their 50-14 win over Corinth/Fort Edward at home on Sunday, April 11.

In the first quarter of the game, Schuylerville took a 24-0 lead. O. Sherman scored on a 19 yd TD. The 2 pt. conversion was completed by O. Sherman to Bowen. O. Sherman threw a 12 yd TD pass to Dow. The 2 pt. conversion was completed by Dow to Max. O. Sherman scored again on a 9 yd TD, and Dow completed the 2 pt. conversion.

In the second quarter, Schuylerville increased their lead by 13 points.

O. Sherman scored on a 6 yd TD (kick was good). O. Sherman then threw a 24 yd TD pass to Bolduc (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful).

In the third quarter, Dwyer scored a 37 yd TD (kick was good). Corinth got on the board when A. Sullivan scored on 69 yd rushing TD (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful).

Dow wrapped up the scoring for Schuylerville in the fourth quarter with a 2 yd TD. Corinth’s A. Sullivan scored again for Corinth on a 69 yd fumble recovery, and the 2 pt. conversion was completed by Sarnelli to B. Sullivan.

Schuylerville had 305 total yards. O. Sherman rushed for 49 yds on 5 carries with 3 TDs. Dwyer rushed for 59 yards on 5 carries with 2 TDs. McGarrahan rushed for 70 yds on 16 carries, and Dow rushed for 47 yds on 6 carries.

O. Sherman was 6/11 on passing attempts for 96 yds and 2 TDs. Dow caught 2 passes for 35 yds and 1 TD. Bolduc caught 1 pass for 24 yds and 1 TD. On defense, Dwyer had a fumble recovery and Dow had an interception.

On April 13, the Ballston Spa Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team beat South High 2-1. Amir Abdellatif put Ballston Spa on the board by dribbling through several defenders to score unassisted. Cole McCarthy scored Ballston Spa’s second goal on a direct kick from 40 yards.

SRYMCA H.O.R.S.E. Basketball Tournament SARATOGA SPRINGS — Take your best aim in the Saratoga YMCA’s first ever “HORSE” tournament fundraiser.

The Saratoga Springs Branch is hosting a one-day tournament on April 24 to raise funds for their Financial Assistance program.

The tournament is open to Members and Non-Members. The cost is $10 for Members and $15 for Non-Members.

The divisions (all co-ed) are

as follows: 50 and over from 8 to 10 a.m., 18 to 49-years-old from 11 a.m. -1 p.m., 11 to 13-years-old from 2-4 p.m., and 4 to 17-yearsold from 5 to 7 p.m.

The event focuses on creatively and accurately making shots against an opponent who tries to make the same shot. The first one to make the other miss 5 shots wins. Each miss counts as a letter in “HORSE.” Participants will compete in a bracket-style format, with each

round being a best-of-5 series (each participant is guaranteed to play at least three games).

Rules include the following: the same shot cannot be performed more than twice in a row, dunking is not allowed, if you want to bank/ swish a shot you must call it prior to shooting, everyone has to wear a mask, and spectators must watch from the track.

BERLINER, KEEVE, & STOUT Named to Pan Am Judo Team

GLENVILLE — Ari Berliner (22), Nate Keeve (25), and Nicole Stout (23) from the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) have earned spots on USA Judo’s Pan American Championship team that will compete in Guadalajara, Mexico, April 16-17, 2021. The Pan Ams is an Olympic qualifying event where the results are weighed equally to winning a tour event. Berliner, who will compete at 66kg, will be going to his first Pan Ams. Keeve, whose father Damon was a 1992 and 1996 Olympian, will be headed to his third Pan Ams. Stout will also be competing in her third Pan Am Championship. The JMJC has now put a total of 44 athletes on the Pan Am Judo team in a remarkable run over its 20 years of operation.

Summer Pickleball League SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Recreation Department’s Pickleball League is moving outside for the summer.

All levels are welcome to participate, although there is limited space for Beginners. The league is 18+, and will play at East Side Rec on Wednesdays, 5:45–8:15 p.m., starting May 5 to June 23.

Early registration for city residents is open through Monday, April 26. Early registration for non-city residents is Monday, April 19 – Monday, April 26. Fees through April 26 are $45 for city

residents and $65 for non-city residents. Fees after April 26 are $70 for city residents and $90 for non-city residents.

The Pickleball League will follow a ladder-style system where players participate in a round robin with others of similar skill in a recreational setting.

Players will need a mask, paddle, water, and sneakers.

Congrats to this week’s Athlete of the Week – Sean Hudson!

Sean is a senior at Saratoga Springs High School. He is currently a quarterback and free safety on the Saratoga Springs Varsity Football Team. He had an outstanding game against Bethlehem this season. He

threw for 5 touchdowns, rushed for 193 yards, and ran in another touchdown. He kicked 5 extra points and finished the game 11/16 for 231 yards.

Sean also plays baseball for Saratoga Springs High School, and is primarily an outfielder. He

also played summer ball on the Saratoga Lightning and Capital Renegades travel teams.

Academically, Sean has been on the High Honor Roll all semesters of high school. He has been accepted and will attend the University of Maryland in the Fall.

Saratoga Race Course Opens For Training; Oklahoma to Re-Open in May SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Race Course will open for spring training at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 17. The barn area at the Oklahoma Training Track will open to horsemen on Thursday, April 15.

To accommodate the completion of a major renovation of the Oklahoma Training Track facility, training will begin on the main track at Saratoga Race Course, according to a statement issued by the New York Racing Association.
