Summer Outlook Galway Schools $3.1 Million Capital Project

GALWAY — Galway Central School District is proposing a $3.1 million dollar Capital Improvement Project for urgent repairs.

On March 29, the Galway CSD Board of Education passed a resolution to put forth a Capital Improvement Project for voter consideration. The NYS Education Department requires

districts to complete a Building Condition Survey (BCS) every five years, and this Capital Project is addressing problems that arose in the most recent. CSArch, the district’s architects, categorized all recommendations in the BCS as an immediate need and called for them to be addressed in the first year of the project.

but Eventful Marriage of Henry and Eliza Vrooman

On April 15, 1842, Henry A. Vrooman, a forty-one-year-old farmer living in West Charlton passed away in his home near the intersection of what is now Eastern Avenue and Sacandaga Road.. He was laid to rest in the nearby West Glenville Cemetery. Only eight months earlier he had married forty-year-old Eliza McClelland, a widow with two children from nearby Blue Corners on the western edge of the Town of Charlton. It was a roller-coaster eight months.

Only a few months after their marriage, Henry’s new bride packed her belongings in a sleigh and left just before their first Christmas together.

Henry started telling friends that he did not want her to return. However, calling it just a family visit, Eliza was back after only a month.

During the winter, Henry became ill. Dr. David Low, the attending physician, informed him that his case was “perfectly hopeless” and that he should make arrangements for the disposition of his property. The day before he died, Henry Vrooman asked his brother-in-law, attorney John Brotherson, to take down his will where he gave everything to his wife Eliza. Others present that day was his cousin Cornelius V. D. Wendell, Eliza’s friend Mary Mott, and Henry’s brother John.

After the will was placed in the hands of the Surrogate Court, Henry’s brother requested an investigation to prove its validity.

Though present when his brother had spoken his will, John had been sick and in bed on the other side of the room, unable to hear his brother’s whispered words.

Two months after Henry died this proceeding was held in Surrogate Court , with those who had witnessed the signing of the will and other interested parties attending and giving testimony.

They were all to offer different perspectives on the short marriage of Henry and Eliza.

The first to testify was Henry’s cousin, Cornelius V. D. Wendell.

After being sworn in, Cornelius said that he was present when Henry Vrooman made known his desires about the distribution of his property and “made his mark,” to sign the document.

The next to give testimony was Mary Mott, Eliza’s friend and neighbor of her father. Before her

marriage to Henry, Eliza had lived with Mary and her husband. Mary gave a woman’s perspective in her words of support for her friend: Know there were some difficulties between the deceased and his wife but what they were I can’t tell anything about. Deceased told me that his brother John W. caused a great deal of difficulty between himself & his wife. He went so far as to say that there never would have been any difficulty between himself & wife if it had not been for his brother.

He told me that his brother said that he did not like it that he should get married. He told me once that his brother had behaved so badly to him that he did not intend he should ever have a cent of his property.

When it was John Brotherson’s turn he stated that when the will was made, Henry was asked if his brother should be called to sign as a witness to his will. His response was a (negative) shake of his head.

When the will was read back to him, he said that it was as he wished it, and then he smiled.

Peter Saunders next offered the first testimony concerning the break in the relationship between Henry and Eliza. Saunders and Henry Moore had visited the Vrooman farm in early 1842 to purchase property that Henry and his brother owned in Glenville.

When asked about having Eliza sign the deed, Henry then said she had left him and that she would never be back “as long as I have strength to keep her out.” He also stated that she was extravagant and would have more company than he could afford. Sanders also testified that Henry stated that she had abused him when he undertook to correct her children.

John Anderson was another neighbor who testified about Henry’s relationship with his brother John. Anderson was a close friend of Henry’s brother and had once been asked by him to help “settle a difficulty” between him and his brother after Henry and Eliza had married.

Anderson also heard Henry say that his wife had gone away and that he “never wanted to see her in the house again, she or none of her tribe.”

But Elizabeth Odell, the daughter of Philip Brotherson’s second wife Alice told a different story. She recalled that it was Christmas week in 1841 that Eliza moved back to Blue Corners. Once Eliza had returned to Henry, Elizabeth visited and was told

by Henry that he and Eliza “live as happily as two birds together.”

Next, Alletta, daughter of Philip Brotherson and his second wife Alice told of Eliza’s care of Henry during the final months of his life. During her visits to their home, she saw Eliza “nurse him, procure his victuals for him & take care of him as well as any baby.”

Mary Mott in her testimony supported this claim, even telling that after the funeral John had said that he thought Eliza must be “very much fatigued as she had been very faithful & kind to my brother & had nursed him and taken good care of him during his sickness.”

The hearing ended with Henry’s will being admitted to probate and filed. Apparently, the judge sided with those that testified that the couple’s marriage had conformed to the old adage that “All is well that ends well.”

Plan Ahead for Canning Season

by Diane Whitten, MS, Master Food Preserver, CCE Food & Nutrition Educator If you plan to preserve your harvest this year by canning, now’s the time to plan ahead. In 2020 canning jars and lids were hard to find, so shop now for these items. Only buy what you need for this year, resist the urge to hoard equipment. The shortage last year was due in part to many people buying more than they needed.

LIDS: The lid system that the USDA has tested extensively and stands by is the two-piece metal lid and screw band. The design of these lids has changed recently to be BPA-free. The new lids no longer require heating before applying to the jar which is an advantage. You may still have older lids, so check the direction on the package for preparing the lids for canning. This style of lid is meant for one-time use.

Reusable lids are made by a few companies, these lids may be easier to find. Both plastic and glass lids with rubber rings are marketed. Obviously, the advantage of using these is that they are reusable, so you don’t have to buy more every year. Research done at the University of Georgia showed slightly more seal failures within 3 months of storage for the reusable lids compared to the two-piece

system which in this study had no seal failures. (1) JARS: Do an inventory of the jars you have noting the sizes and whether they’re regular or widemouth jars. Make sure you have lids that match the jars. If you plan to make a lot of jam or jelly this year, be sure to have an appropriate amount of half-pint jars, and try to estimate how many pint and quart jars you’ll need.

Pressure Canner Dial Gauge Testing at CCE: The manufacturers of pressure canners recommend that dial gauges be tested annually before canning. CCE of Saratoga County and Albany County will test dial gauges at no charge.

Last Season’s Canned Goods: Take a look in your pantry for last summer’s canned goods.

Check the seals on the products, and discard any items if the seal is not intact. Make plans to use up last summer’s products (including frozen) to make room for new products to prevent food waste. If you have a lot of canned beans left over from last year, maybe you should can fewer this year, or visa versa.

Only can what you will reasonably use within a year for best quality.

Saratoga Farmers’ Market Opens 2021 Summer Season in Two Locations SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Farmers’ Market, the area’s longest running farmers’ market, will open their 43rd outdoor market season on Saturday, May 1 at its current location at the Wilton Mall, in the former BonTon and Bow Tie Cinemas parking lots. Their Wednesday market will open on May 5 at downtown Saratoga’s High Rock Park.

This year’s Saturday markets, weekly from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature around 65 local vendors selling fresh produce, dairy products, eggs, meats, flowers, baked goods, prepared foods, and more. At Wednesday’s markets, weekly from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., 20 vendors will be providing a similar range of items.

The decision to start the summer season in two locations was made to keep market vendors and customers safe while the COVID19 pandemic still requires social distancing. A survey conducted among customers, which gathered over 700 responses, indicated an even split in their location preferences.

The markets will continue to follow current COVID-19 safety guidelines for farmers’ markets by hosting socially distanced markets, offering hand washing and sanitizing opportunities, and following mask requirements for vendors and customers. The Saturday market will continue to offer its online preordering

and curbside pickup service.

Market staff will continually assess market safety and updated operational guidelines for farmers’ markets and do not rule out moving back downtown when it is deemed appropriate to do so.

COURT Tyler J. Gaston, 26, of Clifton Park, pleaded April 14 to two counts sexual abuse in the first-degree, in connection with two incidents that occurred in Saratoga Springs and in Malta, respectively, last year. Gaston was charged in Saratoga Springs Oct. 2, 2020 with sexual abuse in the first-degree and assault in the second-degree, both felonies, and unlawful imprisonment in the second-degree, a misdemeanor, in connection with the Sept. 23 incident.

On that date, officers from the Saratoga Springs Police Department were sent to the Maplewood Cemetery, at the intersection of Weibel Avenue and Louden Road, in response to a call from a 22-year-old woman who reported that she had been attacked by an unknown male while walking through the cemetery. During the incident, the victim was subject to sexual contact through forcible compulsion, according to police. She had also suffered minor physical injury but did not require emergency medical treatment. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Saratoga County

Sheriff’s Office charged Gaston while investigating a similar incident in the Town of Malta.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office were already aware of the open case in Saratoga Springs and contacted investigators from the Saratoga Springs Police Department. Sentencing is scheduled at Saratoga County Court on June 16.

Robert Salisbury, Jr., 32, of Schenectady, was sentenced April 15 to 1 year in jail, after pleading to felony DWI, in Ballston.

Daniel R. Deere, 49, of Gansevoort, pleaded April 15 to felony robbery, in connection with an incident in Wilton. Sentencing June 24.

Bryan E. Gailor, 42, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced April 12 to 3-1/2 years in state prison, after pleading to attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance in connection with an incident in Malta.

Shamika Penn, 30, of Buffalo, pleaded April 13 to felony grand larceny, in connection with an incident in Moreau.

Sentencing June 15.

POLICE Regina Wilson, 51, and Keith Wilson, 51, both of Saratoga Springs, were each charged April 13 with torturing or injuring animals/failure to provide sustenance, a misdemeanor.

James Bernardoni, 50, of Green Island, was charged April 12 in Saratoga Springs with failure to pay service, a misdemeanor.

Felix Omoruyi, 34, of Desoto, TX, was charged April 16 in Saratoga Springs with criminal contempt, a misdemeanor.

Michelle L. Iorio, 32, of Moreau, was charged April 15 with arson in the third degree – a felony, following an investigation into a fire in a residence in the Town of Moreau.

Iorio is accused of intentionally lighting a fire inside her residence after having a dispute with other occupants of the household earlier in the day, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department.

At the time of the fire, she was the only occupant of the house, and no one was injured in the fire.

Brendan F. Mitchell, AKA: “Dred,” 31, was charged April 15 with six felony counts criminal possession of a controlled substance, and one felony count criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Mitchell is accused of distributing quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin throughout Saratoga County.

Glen Riches, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 9 with unlawful imprisonment -a felony, and criminal obstruction of breathing, a misdemeanor.

Joseph Deschenes, 50, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 9 with criminal trespass as a misdemeanor.

Heather Jurczak, 47, of Waterville, was charged April 8 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to keep right.

Derrick Finnegan, 22, of Queensbury, was charged April 9 in Saratoga Springs with felony DWI as a second offense within 10 years, felony aggravated DWI, felony unlicensed

operation, the misdemeanors: reckless driving, obstruct governmental administration, resisting arrest, as well as speeding, improper passing, and failure to obey police officer.

Karen Sitterly, 52, of Niskayuna, was charged April 9 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor assault, and felony vehicular assault.

Erin Haegele, 34, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 8 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and a vehicle equipment violation.

Michael Bohm, 31, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 11 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle without an inspection certificate.

Nathan Shreve, 41, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 11 with criminal contempt in the second-degree, a misdemeanor.

Russell Duffney, 54, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 11 with two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A 38-year-old Schuylerville woman was killed early Sunday after being struck by a vehicle along State Route 9.

Just prior to 1 a.m. on Sunday, April 18, officers from the Saratoga Springs Police Department responded to State Route 9 just north of the State Park’s East/West Road. The initial report was that a vehicle has struck a pedestrian.

Officers arrived and located the pedestrian, who has been identified as 38-year-old Lindsey Irish of Schuylerville. The Saratoga Springs Fire Department also responded and provided emergency medical

treatment to Irish; however, efforts were unsuccessful.

Police said their investigation shows that Irish had been walking southbound along the east side of State Route 9 just prior to the accident. For unknown reasons, Irish partially entered the right northbound lane and was struck by a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit traveling northbound in that lane. There was no indication of alcohol or drug use with the driver of the Rabbit. The Saratoga Springs Police Department was also assisted at the scene by the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team.

SARATOGA SPRINGS —The Sisterhood of Congregation Shaara Tfille recently made a contribution of $500 to the Saratoga Nutrition Assistance for Children (SNACpack) Program. Based at St. Clement's Church, SNACpack volunteers pack over 140 weekend backpacks full of child-friendly, nonperishable foods.

Since 2015, these backpacks are given to children who do not have enough food to sustain them over the weekend. Sisterhood President Judith Ehrenshaft and Treasurer Carole Polacsek delivered the donation to SNACpack Co-founder and Coordinator Kerry Hall Trimmings.

Tonko Announces Funeral Assistance for New Yorkers Who Lost Loved Ones to COVID-19 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Representative Paul D. Tonko announced this week that applications are being accepted for funeral assistance for New Yorkers who have lost a relative to COVID-19. Tonko helped establish this program as part of the American Rescue Plan recently passed by Congress and signed into law.

“No amount of money can heal the loss of a loved one,” Congressman Tonko said, in a statement. “While we cannot erase that pain, we can help those facing the added financial strain during this dark time.

This funeral assistance program is here to help New Yorkers and all Americans access needed relief and lessen the economic burden they have had to carry during this prolonged pandemic.”

New Yorkers who paid for funeral expenses after Jan. 20, 2020, for an individual whose death may have been caused by or was likely

the result of COVID-19 can apply for up to $9,000 of assistance per funeral through FEMA’s dedicated call center at 844-684-6333; TTY 800-462-7585, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. No online applications will be accepted. There is no deadline to apply.

The applicant responsible for COVID-19 funeral expenses will need to provide the following information below when they call FEMA to register for assistance. FEMA recommends gathering this information ahead of the application process: Social Security number for the applicant and the deceased individual; Date of birth for the applicant and

the deceased individual; Current mailing address for the applicant; Current telephone number for the applicant; Location or address where the deceased individual passed away; Information about burial or funeral insurance policies; Information about other funeral assistance received, such as donations; CARES Act grants and assistance from voluntary organizations; Routing and account number of the applicant’s checking or savings account (for direct deposit, if requested).

SUMMER OUTLOOK A Safe Reopening: States Debate, Venues Post Protocols

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Arena football games at Albany’s Times Union Center. Rangers hockey at Madison Square Garden.

The New York City Ballet at SPAC. Venues gearing up for the safe welcoming of an increasing number of attendees have begun to put requirements in place in an effort to minimize the risk of spreading the COVID-19 infection among those entering their respective facilities.

Those vaccinated may show proof of vaccination. Those not vaccinated or unable to be vaccinated may show a negative COVID-19 test. The guidelines vary state-tostate, and combating the potential threat of phony vaccination cards are complicating matters.

When the Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced its reimagined summer ballet season this week, it came with a series of safety protocols. Seats will be sold in designated pods of two inside the amphitheater, and designed pods of two and four on the SPAC lawn.

Show attendees will be required to complete a health screening questionnaire, pass a mandatory temperature check prior to entry and wear a face mask at all times.

Additionally, all attendees are required to show proof of a completed vaccination or a negative 72-hour COVID-19 test.

In late March, New York became the first state in the country to introduce a digital pass to seemingly make it easier for attendees as well as for venues to validate the authenticity of that proof.

Anyone vaccinated or tested for COVID-19 in the State of New York is eligible for an “Excelsior Pass,” and the passes provide proof of vaccination, a PCR test, or an Antigen test.

According to the state, users are able to store their “pass” digitally on their smartphone with the Excelsior Pass Wallet app – which is free from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store - or to print the pass from the Excelsior website and bring it to the venue with them. Businesses and venues can then scan and validate the pass to ensure COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements are met for entry.

To facilitate the pass, the website collects a person’s COVID-19 status as well as their name, date

of birth, zip code, vaccination or COVID-19 test type, date and location. The state says that personal information will not be used for marketing purposes. Some privacy advocates are concerned, however.

“It is a little bit scary in that you put your information in, verifies that you’ve had the vaccine, and gives you a kind of pass that has a QR Code on it. The question then is that every time you go in to somewhere that requires you to show proof of vaccination, you could be tracked,” said Greg Rinckey, cofounder of Tully Rinckey law firm.

“There could be a database of what type of venues you’re entering, when you’re going and when you’re coming. It’s not the same as just showing someone your vaccination card at the door. When someone is scanning a QR code, a database can be built that shows who went and what time you went.

That’s where a lot of privacy advocates get concerned,” Rinckey said.

“It’s one thing to require proof of vaccination, it’s another thing to say that you have to be scanned in with some mechanism that can track you,” he said. “I think as long as you can provide proof you’ve been vaccinated, that should be sufficient. Where a lot of people have problems is with the ‘passport.’ The passport can track you.”

The state currently says that participation in the Excelsior Pass is voluntary, and New Yorkers can always show alternate proof of vaccination or testing - like another mobile application or paper form directly at a business or venue. The small print related to the Excelsior Pass carries a lengthy list of disclaimers that includes notice that the state may disclose personal information without an applicant’s consent in certain instances related to legal matters.

“We’ve all seen what can happen with the E-ZPass,” Rinckey said. “It’s meant to be used for paying the toll, but how many people have gone through an E-ZPass toll plaza a little bit above the speed limit and then suddenly get a letter in the mail that says you’ve exceeded the speed limit going through the plaza?” In 2015, the New York Civil Liberties Union revealed that wireless E-ZPass tollbooth transponders were being read routinely throughout New York City to systematically collect

NEWS 9 location data about drivers.

“Unfortunately, what we’re starting to see now are fake proofsof-vaccination, so I think there is eventually going to be a mechanism where you’re going to have to have ‘official’ proof of vaccination.

And that is what the Excelsior Pass does do,” he said.

“It’s an interesting area of law with privacy concerns. You know that the government has an interest in making sure that there aren’t health concerns. And in order to reopen the economy and in order to reopen these venues – especially where there are going to be thousands of people - you really do have to have a mechanism to know that the people you’re allowing in who are going to be in close proximity with others, have either been vaccinated or have had a negative test,” Rinckey explained.

The potential solution?

“Probably a mix. Having proof of vaccination in a system where you can verify you’ve been vaccinated,

but in a way that can’t be tracked.

It’s the act of scanning - that tracking mechanism - that makes people nervous.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced starting April 26, museum capacity will be raised to 50% and movie theater capacity to 33%. On May 19, indoor large arena capacity will be raised to 25%.

“The numbers are stable and going down, so we can open up more economic activity,” Cuomo said.

In Saratoga County, nearly half of the county’s overall population of 230,000 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Breaking it down further, over 60% of county residents over the age of 18 have received at least one dose, topping the national average, which is just over 50% for that category, according to the CDC. The guidelines regarding socalled vaccine passports are being debated at state levels, with some states - Arizona, Florida and Texas among them - already expressing

their opposition to the idea, citing mostly privacy concerns. In the future, particularly when international travel begins to ramp up, Rinckey says he can see the federal government offering guidelines to instill a higher or enhanced level of proof than the states.

At SPAC, the ballet schedule takes place in mid-July, and the venue says proof may come via either a card or a digital pass. It is unclear how the state’s indoor/ outdoor capacity designation may relate to Saratoga Performing Arts Center which has a capacity of 25,000 as an amphitheater (pavilion) and outdoor (lawn) venue.

There has yet to be an announcement regarding other traditional SPAC programming – such as the Saratoga Jazz Fest - or the summerlong pop concert schedule which is tentatively slated to feature Dave Matthews Band, Rod Stewart and others, and is coordinated by concert promoter Live Nation.

City UDO Project Enters Final Phase; Document Available Online for View

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A final draft document of the UDO was presented to the City Council this week.

The UDO - a Unified Development Ordinance - is a tool combining traditional zoning and subdivision regulations, along with other development standards for items such as design guidelines, storm water management, signs

and street standards into one, easy-to-read reference document.

It is intended to eliminate redundant or conflicting code provisions and help streamline the review and approval process.

The April 19 presentation effectively kicks-off the last phase of the project. Discussions will continue at the next City Council meeting, on May 4, after

which advisory opinions will be requested from the city and county Planning Boards and the Design Review Commission.

Additional public hearings will be scheduled later this year, after which it is anticipated the City Council will vote on the matter.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs is losing another of its few remaining historic American elms. One of the most majestic, and certainly the most visible, of the City’s elms died of Dutch elm disease last season.

Towering above the northwest corner of Broadway and Van Dam, where it has welcomed every visitor arriving from Exit 15, this tree is scheduled for removal soon by the City’s tree crew, perhaps as

early as Saturday, April 24.

Ironically, the removal of this titanic heritage tree coincides with Sustainable Saratoga’s Tree Toga planting event, when volunteers will plant 15 trees around town.

Saratoga once had hundreds of American elms, the most graceful and beloved street tree of them all. The arrival of the Dutch elm disease midway through the 20th century wiped out all but a handful of these beloved trees.

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS Avoid The Three Big 401(k) Mistakes

Assumptions: 3% raises every year and 7% annual investment return

The 401(k) has become the de facto method of retirement savings for many Americans.

Because it is more often than not the centerpiece of one’s finances, it is important to ensure its maximum efficiency. Mistakes can be costly, and they should be relatively easy to avoid given proper planning. We will look at the three biggest to provide an easy checklist for your situation.

Not Contributing Enough Retirement is so far away and current needs always seem more pressing than putting dollars aside for later. As a result, there is a tendency to leave money on the table by not contributing enough to fully take advantage of an employer matching contribution.

Each company is different, so it is prudent to check with human resources to see what the details are. It is important to be contributing at least enough to maximize that company match. To illustrate, imagine a situation where a 30-year-old making $60,000/ year misses just 1% of company match for the next 35 years until retirement. At the end of those 35 years, he or she will have missed out on almost $120,000 in company contributions and associated growth. It adds up!

Contributing Too Much After ensuring that you are maximizing your match, contributing too much can be equally damaging. The IRS restricts access to money in retirement plans until you reach retirement age and will assess penalties for early withdrawal. If you are overcontributing at the expense of not having

enough readily accessible savings, you risk getting hit with penalties just to access your own money.

According to the IRS, Americans recently paid a total of $5.7 billion in a single year for early withdrawal penalties – that does not even factor in interest paid on 401(k) loans.

A sound financial plan should have ample balance between short- and long-term money.

Checking Your Balance Too Much Saving for retirement is a process that takes time. Logging in to check your balance frequently would be like planting an oak tree and measuring its growth every day. Investment decisions should be

made with the head rather than the heart and checking your 401(k) too frequently can cause action based on the emotions of seeing volatility in your account balance. Once you are comfortable with your investment allocation, check in no more than once or twice per year.

It is said that a football game comes down to the fundamentals like blocking and tackling. Those teams that do them well, win.

Nailing your retirement savings is the blocking and tackling of personal finance. To win the game it is essential to focus on what matters most and ensure you are doing everything correctly.

New: The Little Market at Five Points Continues East Side Tradition

SARATOGA SPRINGS — An iconic Saratoga Springs market that has served community life for nearly a century has re-opened after extensive renovations with a new look, an upgraded menu and a new name.

Located just east of Broadway where Park Place and Lincoln Avenue meet Clark Street and Jefferson Street on the city’s east side – the Little Market at Five Points has re-opened in a space formerly occupied by Five Points Market & Deli.

“Going back to the 1920’s, it has always been a market of some sort,” says co-owner Jim Morris. “It’s nice to keep the tradition going.”

Husband-and-wife team Jim and Kerry Morris, and co-partner Michele Morris - “We all have the same last name, but we are not all related” – he points out, opened in late March, following an extensive 7-monyh-long renovation that saw the installation of new floors and windows, a new awning at the entryway and a new name.

Jim and Kerry Morris started the popular Scallions restaurant in the 1980s. Michele had worked at the restaurant, eventually purchased it and operated it for a generation, first on Broadway, and then on Lake Avenue, before selling it a few years ago.

Jim and Kerry meanwhile in 2007 bought the building that houses the Little Market at Five Points, making what they call

the natural move to operate the deli downstairs.

“For us, we created a menu and basically started from scratch,” says Jim Morris. “We kind of upped the game on how we do things. We kept the beer, and we have the dairy.”

“We’re looking to catapult on what already was here – the breakfast sandwiches, the lunches – but adding to it,” says Michele. Those new offerings include cappuccinos and grab-n-go prepared dinner meals. “Some nice cuts of meat to take home and put on the grill and just a little more upscale than it was before,” she says. “There’s also a lot of vegetarian and vegan offerings which wasn’t something that was available before.”

Menu to-go includes a bevy of signature sandwiches, make-yourown sub and sandwich choices, salads and other fare; morning nourishments comes via breakfast sandwiches and cappuccino.

The Little Market at Five Points offers indoor and outdoor seating and is currently open 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Those hours are seasonal, the owners say, and will increase moving forward into the warmer season.

This is the second collaboration for the two credit unions with the shared initiative of improving access to financial services in our local region.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Martin Nemer, founder of Nemer Motor Group, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 53. Nearly five decades later, his family still thinks about what might have been.

Earlier this month, the Nemer family—and the company that bears their name—made a gift to Saratoga Hospital Foundation to help prevent others from suffering a similar loss. As a tribute to their father and grandfather,

the Nemers are underwriting Saratoga Hospital’s subscription to the emergency Lifenet System.

Lifenet transmits electrocardiogram and other critical patient information to the Emergency Department while the ambulance is en route. Armed with this information, the hospital can prepare for the patient’s arrival and ensure the emergency interventional cardiology team is at the ready, if necessary.

“If Lifenet were available when my father had his heart attack, he might have lived,” said Robert Nemer, partner, Nemer Motor Group, in a statement. “If we can help save someone’s life by getting them treatment faster, that would be a fitting tribute to him.”

Nemer Motor Group owns four dealerships, including Nemer Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram of Saratoga. Several family members live in Saratoga Springs.

fuel use and efficiency. Replacing underground fuel oil heating tanks with above ground storage tanks. Remediating soil as necessary. Replacing two vehicle lifts.

Galway CSD emphasizes that these improvements will assist their mechanics, Scott Hollbrook and Denis Ryder, in their efforts to keep the district’s fleet, drivers, and students safe. And, that getting students to school safely takes commitment and effort from many professionals. At the foundation of it all is having a fleet of safe buses and a safe facility in which

to work on them. Galway CSD is rated as a Preferred Carrier by the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT).

The project will also: Replace an underground fuel tank in front of the Junior/Senior High School that was installed in 1988. Replace the pavilion at the track that collapsed in the winter of 2020, shifting its location to add two separate restrooms, a sink and storage for future concessions, and with a custodial closet. Replace the storage shed near the track with a larger building that can accommodate storage for athletic equipment.

To maximize State Aid, the proposed 2021 Capital Project will contain minor renovations to the following areas that were not touched in the 2016 Capital Project including: restrooms near the auditorium, restrooms near offices, and flooring near the entrance to the auditorium and gymnasium.

The full cost of the proposed capital improvement project will be $3.1 million. The district will utilize $100,000 from the Capital Reserve, which results in $3 million bonded over 15 years. For aidable expenses, New York State Building Aid will reimburse 78.7% of the proposed Capital Improvement Project. After

subtracting retiring debt and funds from the Capital Reserve, along with NYS Building Aid, the net local share will be approximately $65,000/year.

If the proposed Capital Improvement Project is approved, design and construction documents will be finalized in the Fall of 2021. Approval by the NYS Education Department will be in Winter 2021-22. The bidding process will take place in Winter 2022, and construction will begin in Spring/Summer 2022.

Connie For School Board Like many parents across the Saratoga Springs City School District, I am looking forward to the 20212022 school year with a full-time, in-person educational experience for our children that fosters a healthy routine, puts learning at the center of every decision, and highlights the need for community, mental health awareness, respect for others, a safe learning environment, and a sense of love and belonging.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Central Catholic School will host Career Day 2021, and school alumni will return virtually to their alma mater for the event.

Career Day 2021 will take place on Friday, April 23 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Saratoga Central Catholic School, 247 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. The morning will include presentations by alumni sharing the career paths they chose since their high school experience at SCC. Alumni will also highlight what they enjoy about their professions. Students in grades 9-12 will pre-select the presentations they are interested in attending.

The event is virtual this year so that students in school, as well as students who are attending classes

remotely, can both participate.

This year’s list of over 20 participating alumni includes SCC graduates who have pursued careers in dentistry, law, nursing, voice acting, military service, writing, accounting, software engineering, culinary arts, theater, professional sports, education, funeral direction, social media/digital marketing, medicine, law enforcement, building/ carpentry, TV and film production. The 2021 selection of presenters come from graduation years that span 1968-2013. Some of the participating alumni live locally, while others live as far away as California.

For over 75 years, Camp Saradac has offered campers creative recreational & educational programs, intriguing arts & crafts, and memories that last a lifetime!

For summer 2021, Camp Saradac will be now be offering two half-day camps in addition to the traditional full-day camp held at the Recreation Center.

appy Earth Week! Some places celebrate Earth Day, others make it a weeklong event, and others organize month-long festivities. At the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, we like to think that every day is Earth Day.

Farmers’ market operations are inherently more sustainable than factory and grocery store operations.

Most obviously, vendors produce food locally, cutting down on transportation impacts. The Farmers’ Market Coalition cites that, on average, food travels over 1,000 miles from the point of production to the retail store. In contrast, practically all vendors at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market live just a county away from the market.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

Many grow and produce their food with extra care for the environment, for instance, by growing organically or choosing sustainable packaging.

Think compostable mushroom boxes, egg carton returns, or glass deposits on items like maple syrup, yogurt, or kombucha. “It’s obvious to consider the earth when you’re a farmer; your hands are literally in the dirt. But other food producers are equally responsible for operating sustainably,” said Shane Avery, owner of Junbucha.

That green focus is evident in customers’ minds, too.

Customers are prepared to shop with reusable totes and netted produce bags. They religiously return their empty containers. They often choose the more sustainable options even if it costs a little more. Julia, one market customer, stopped by to return her glass maple syrup jar, calling choosing glass over plastic “the intuitive choice.” She chooses jars as they are reusable, returnable, recyclable, and she uses them to store granola at home before returning them.

And then, there are the green choices that extend further than the farmers’ market. The Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s partnership with the Franklin Community Center is a prime example: customers drop off compost at the farmers’ market to be used in the Center’s community garden, while vendors donate unsold food to the food pantry.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees 2. Roll the prepared crust into a 12-inch circle to fit into a 9-inch pie pan. Prick it all over with a fork. Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then remove it from the oven and set aside to cool.

All these green efforts point out a quiet strength of farmers’ markets: their belief in the efficacy of traditional ways, where less is more, quality trumps quantity, and there is a deep-rooted connection to the earth.

3. To make the filling, cook the bacon in a frying pan until crisp. Let it cool on a paper towel-lined plate. Once cool, roughly chop it up.

4. Dice the onion into medium-sized pieces, about ½ inch. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and add the onion.

Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook until the onion has softened and is just starting to turn brown. Remove it from the heat and set aside.

5. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream, milk, and eggs. Add the bacon, onions, cheese, salt and pepper. Pour the mixture into the pie crust. Don’t overfill.

6. Bake the quiche for about 40 minutes. The edges should be golden brown and the center should feel just set.

7. Remove the quiche from the oven and let it cool on a rack.

A Spider in Action Hello my Foodie Friends !

For the most part, I do not like having spiders in my kitchen -or anywhere, really. When I was a child, I would love to play with insects in my mother’s garden. However, I have outgrown that! I will make an exception for one spider, though: my beloved wood-handled, stainless

by John Reardon steel spider. I am talking about the kitchen tool that looks like a mini for Saratoga TODAY flattened colander with a long handle. (It’s called a spider because the woven metal netting resembles a spider’s web.). It is much less creepy than an actual spider. I have found that the spider has become one of the most reached-for tools in my kitchen. The perforated bowl is perfect for transporting pasta from pot to pan (while reserving the pasta water), lifting items like dumplings

ge, a s u a S h t i Rigatoni w Greens Beans, and INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons (or more) kosher salt

• 1 bunch of Tuscan kale, rinsed

• 3 links sweet Italian sausage

• 1- 2-ounce chunk of Parmesan

• ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

• 1 lemon

• 1- 15-ounce can cannellini (white kidney) beans

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 12 ounces rigatoni pasta

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Fill a large pot (preferably around 8 quarts) with approximately 6 quarts water, then put it over high heat. When you see wisps of steam, add 3 Tbsp. salt, stir once, and cover the pot. This will make it boil faster.

2. While the water comes to a boil, prep your other ingredients. Remove 3 links sausage from its casings and set aside. Dump 1 can beans into a strainer or colander and rinse well. Shake off excess water. Turn out beans onto a couple of sheets of paper towel and pat dry. Strip kale leaves off the thick woody ribs and tear into small pieces; discard ribs. Finely grate 2 oz. Parmesan using the small holes of a box grater. Set aside about ½ cup cheese for garnishing.

3. Heat 2 Tbsp. oil in a large Dutch oven or large skillet, preferably with straight sides, over mediumhigh. It’s best to use a vessel with high sides, because you’re about to do a lot of tossing and flinging when the pasta goes in, and this will minimize spillage. Add sausage and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon and stirring occasionally, until meat is browned, crispy in places, and cooked through, 8–10 minutes. Transfer with a spider or slotted spoon to a plate. Remove pot from heat and set aside.

4. Pour 12 oz. pasta into water and stir once. Set timer for 3 minutes less than the package advises.

You’re going to cook it well shy of al dente.

5. While pasta is cooking, return pot to medium-low heat and add beans and ½ tsp. red pepper flakes. Cook, tossing occasionally and mashing some beans with spoon, until browned in spots, about 5 minutes. Transfer about half of beans to plate with sausage.

6. Using a ladle or liquid measuring cup, add about 1 cup cooking liquid from pasta into pot with beans (reserve remaining liquid). Increase heat to medium-high.

7. Using spider or a slotted spoon, transfer pasta to pot with beans and add kale. Toss vigorously with tongs to move the pasta around to incorporate the kale as it wilts. Continue to cook, tossing often, until kale is wilted, pasta is al dente, and water is reduced by about half, about 4 minutes. If water is reduced before pasta is al dente, add another ¼–½ cup pasta cooking liquid. Reduce heat to low.

8. Add another ¼ cup pasta cooking liquid, then gradually add cheese, tossing all the while, until cheese is emulsified into the water and forms a luxurious, glossy sauce.

9. Remove pot from heat and add reserved beans and sausage, then 2 Tbsp. butter, tossing, until butter is melted. Taste pasta and add more salt if needed. Cut 1 lemon in half and squeeze one half over pasta, then drizzle with remaining 1 Tbsp. oil.

10. Divide pasta among bowls and top with reserved ½ cup cheese.

Another great way to put the spider in action is when making eggs hard or softboiled. Any egg that goes in boiling water benefits from being carried in a spider. The spider makes it easy to lower multiple eggs gently into a pot, and removing them three at a time is no problem either. Eggs love spiders, and spiders love eggs—it’s the perfect boiled egg tool. 28 Arts & Albany Symphony Orchestra Streams Live Saturday from UPH SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Albany Symphony’s “Haydn and Schubert” Concert will be livestreamed in real time at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24 from Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs.

The concert will feature exemplary works by beloved classical composers as well as the award-winning Violin Concerto No. 2 by George Tsontakis, and the latest premiere by ASO American Music Festival alumna Tanner Porter. There will be a pre-concert

talk at 7 p.m. and a post-concert question and answer session with artists for season subscribers.

The 2020-2021 season continues through the American Music Festival in June. Home Made Theater Presents a Spring Fling SARATOGA SPRINGS — Home Made Theater will be presenting a seasonally themed event, Spring Fling, on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2. There will be two performances each day, at noon and 2 p.m.

The hour-long, familyfriendly event will feature singing, dancing, scenes, and monologues, performed by cast members of Home Made Theater productions past. Selections will include “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” from Oklahoma, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy, and a dance number by members of the Tango Fusion dance company.

Space is limited to 75 attendees per performance. Tickets are $10 per person and must be purchased in advance. There will be no tickets sold at the door.

Entertainment Proctors: Projections Suggest Return To Full Capacity By December; UPH Saratoga Announcement Soon

SCHENECTADY — Proctors has announced the new dates for eight postponed productions from two previous Key Private Bank Broadway Series at Proctors seasons; the dates of three other previously scheduled shows are still to be determined.

The Key Private Bank Broadway Series lineup at Proctors starts roughly 45-60 days later than a typical fall-tospring cycle, which is “a good thing” according to Proctors Collaborative CEO Philip Morris.

“The touring industry can’t come back until we can seat audiences

near or at capacity. The economics won’t work otherwise. All projections suggest we should be able to return to full capacity by December,” Morris said in a statement. “And it goes without saying we will be fully compliant with all state and federal safety guidelines to assure patron safety.”

Park Theater to Host ‘Dinner & Movie’ Series, Rochmon Record Club Listening Parties GLENS FALLS — On April 28, The Park Theater will host the next event in their ‘Dinner & A Movie’ series featuring science fiction drama, Arrival, accompanied by a 3-Course Prix Fixe menu presented by executive chef, Matthew J. Delos.

Arrival (2016) is a masterfully crafted, thought-provoking science fiction drama filled with suspense and hope.

In addition to the film, executive chef, Matthew J. Delos, has curated a menu that is out of this world. The first course will feature a choice of Roasted Carrot Bisque or Baby Arugula Salad. The first listening party, Thursday April 29, will focus on the Eagles’ legendary fifth studio album, Hotel California (1976).

The second listening party, May 26, will focus on Carole King's masterful second studio album, Tapestry (1971). The third listening party, on June 30, will focus on Queen’s groundbreaking fourth studio album Night at the Opera (1975).

New York City Ballet Full Company: No Return to SPAC This Year; Intimate “NYCB On And Off Stage” Presentations To Be Staged Instead SARATOGA SPRINGS — In a joint decision by Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and New York City Ballet (NYCB), SPAC has announced that due to the ongoing health and safety concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic and guidelines mandated by the State of New York, NYCB will not return to its summer home in Saratoga Springs with the full company this July.

Instead, a small group of NYCB dancers and musicians will present NYCB On and Off Stage, an intimate, up-close look at selected excerpts from the company’s extraordinary repertory of ballets. This series of educational programs has never before been presented for Saratoga audiences.

NYCB On and Off Stage is slated for six shows from July 14-17 and will feature two special presentations. All shows will be hosted by a NYCB Principal Dancer who will introduce the excerpts and provide insights on each ballet.

SPAC and New York City Ballet have also confirmed that the traditional residency engagement with the full company will be presented in 2022 from July 12-16.

The NYCB On and Off Stage presentations will be offered in compliance with the current guidelines from the Governor to ensure the health and safety of artists, audience members and staff. As required by New York State, all attendees of the series will be required to show either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of the event.

NYCB On and Off Stage will showcase two distinct programs suitable for audiences of all ages including an “All Balanchine” presentation, illuminating the expansive repertory of Founding Choreographer George Balanchine with excerpts from masterworks including Apollo, The Four Temperaments, Agon, Jewels, and Who Cares?, and a program entitled “Short Stories,” exploring beloved narrative ballets like Firebird, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Western Symphony, Fancy Free, and The Concert.

Both programs will feature an ensemble of 15 New York City Ballet dancers in costume performing excerpts from the Company’s world-renowned repertory, with live musical accompaniment provided by pianists from NYCB. This new format represents an innovative and safe way to bring dance to the community, while adhering to carefully mapped out, socially distanced seating and rigorous COVID protocols both in SPAC’s public spaces and backstage.

“While we will miss the big, lush productions for which City Ballet is renowned, the safety of the artists, audience members and staff is our greatest priority,” said Elizabeth Sobol, President and CEO of SPAC, in a statement.

“When thinking about SPAC and re-opening, in addition to considering the audience members in our public spaces, we also have to make certain that the backstage, dressing rooms, rehearsal spaces and stage are all safe. This would not be possible with the complete NYCB organization of nearly 100 dancers, 62 orchestra members in the pit and the many production crew members and staff members backstage, as is necessary for a full-scale NYCB engagement. Bringing this new format to SPAC for 2021 ensures that we will be able to effectively create a safe environment for all,” Sobol said.

Tickets for the public will be available to purchase on May 10. Designated pods of two will be allocated and reserved for ticket buyers in the amphitheater, while designed pods of two and four will be available on the SPAC lawn. Amphitheater tickets start at $80 per pod, which seats up to two people. Lawn tickets are available to purchase for $60 for a two-person pod, or $120 for a four-person pod.

Single tickets will be extremely limited and available starting at $40 for the amphitheater and $30 for the lawn. Advance ticket purchases are strongly advised as ticket availability will be limited.

If available, tickets will be on sale on the day of, but are subject to an additional fee.

COVID-19 Safety & Protocols: SPAC will be adhering to all mandated NYS guidelines and therefore all attendees are required to show proof of a completed vaccination no sooner than

14 days prior to the event or a negative 72-hour COVID-19 test. In addition, attendees are required to complete a health screening questionnaire and pass a mandatory temperature check prior to entry. Miyamoto’s grandparents came to the United States from Kumamoto, Japan, and worked as itinerant farmers throughout the central coast of California and the desert of the Imperial Valley. During WWII they, along with Paul’s parents and oldest sibling, were sent to Poston Camp in Arizona. The internment of naturalized citizens as well as Americans of Japanese descent, from 1941 to 1946, informs much of Paul’s work of late. The figures in his paintings recall the Issei, a term used for first generation Japanese Americans who emigrated from Japan, but were not eligible for U.S. citizenship. The distilled forms of field workers, often placed in landscapes drawn from his own memory, portray the strength and endurance of past family members, but could easily represent present-day immigrant farmworkers.

Keeve Takes Bronze at Pan Ams GUADALAJARA, MEXICO — Nate Keeve (25) from New York’s Jason Morris Judo Center took a Bronze medal at the Pan Am Championships at 100kg in Mexico this past weekend.

Keeve had a huge win over Leo Goncalves from Brazil in the quarter final. The Brazilian had won their previous encounter last November in Budapest. Keeve lost to eventual champ Kyle Reyes in the semis but then came back to defeat long time American rival, LA Smith, for his first ever Pan Am medal. Keeve jumped to a career high #53, up from #67, on the World ranking list.

Nicole Stout (23) went 0-2 in her third Pan Ams to close out the JMJC athletes’ participation in the Pan Ams. The following day (April 17), Stout competed in the Mexican Open taking a Bronze in 78kg. Stout earned 50 points on the World ranking list and jumped up 20 spots to #84.

Saratoga Springs Youth Ballet SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Youth Ballet will be holding a Young Children’s Summer Program for students ages 4 to 7-years-old The program will run for two weeks, July 12–16 and July 1 –23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Each day will follow a different ballet theme, and will include a ballet lesson, crafts, stories, and related activities. The cost is $200 for one week and $380 for two weeks. The program is in-person and class size is limited; all CDC, state, and local COVID-19 prevention guidelines will be followed.

Congrats to Athlete of the Week – Zoey Goodness!

Zoey is a senior at Saratoga Springs High School and rows with the SRA (Saratoga Rowing Association).

Some of her rowing accomplishments include placing third nationally at SRAA’s in the Women’s 2V8+ category as a sophomore in 2019, racing at the Head of the Charles in 2018 and 2019, and in 2020 receiving the Service Award from her rowing club, SRA. “I am extremely grateful for having the opportunity to train and work with highly experienced coaches, including elite rowers who have competed at World Championships for the United States and those who will compete, or train in hopes to compete, at the Olympic level,” said Zoey.

Zoey has been an active member of Best Buddies at the high school for four years, and a Best Buddies Officer for the past three years. She is also involved in several other clubs in school that spread the same message and include people with IDD’s (Intellectual Developmental Disabilities) such as Unified Sports and Lions Club.

“Being inclusive is a big part of who I am,” said Zoey.

“Whether that be at rowing, school, or wherever I may be.”

All four years of high school she has been on the High Honor Roll, and her junior and senior year she has been a part of the National Honor Society.

Zoey will be attending and rowing lightweight for Boston University while studying chemistry on a pre-med track.

“To be able to continue my rowing journey in college is a dream come true,” said Zoey. “Even now I hope to push my rowing abilities past college and possibly row at the elite level.”

CP DYNAMO 08 CP Dynamo 08 will be heading to Buffalo for the NYS Hockey Championships for Tier 1 Hockey this weekend.

The team is made up of boys who live in a 2-hour radius of Saratoga. Their dedication is unmatched – traveling four-hour round trips to Utica just for practices back in July when no hockey rinks in the area were open.

TROY ALBANY ICE CATS The Troy Albany Ice Cats, a local girls’ travel ice hockey team, took second in the Northern Region Sectionals, losing 2-1 to Canton who would end up taking second place in the state championship behind Amherst. However, they also headed to Buffalo for the New York State Hockey Championships where they had one win, lost in overtime, and had a seven-round shutout loss – just missing the final four.

“It was huge to have the support for the program,” said Coach Derrek Tuthill. “It kept the girls focused on the goal they set to get to Buffalo. Now we are working on achieving more and more goals.”

Two girls from Saratoga, Chiara Tuthill, a sixth grader, and Ursula Obstarczyk, a fifth grader, play on the team alongside girls from surrounding counties. Rich Scammell started the program back in 1993, and Coach Tuthill says that it is a great program for any girls, regardless of area, looking to play hockey.

The Adirondack Northstars Girls 16U Hockey Team won the NYS Championship, and will be heading out to Denver, CO at the end of this month to compete in the USA Hockey National Championships.

“In a season so out of the ordinary, the girls were able to accomplish so much,” said Renee Lochner, team director/president.

The girls on the team are all local – 4 from Saratoga Springs and 15 others from across Saratoga and Warren county.

SPORTS BULLETIN Fish Creek Rod and Gun Club Memberships SARATOGA COUNTY — Fish Creek Rod and Gun Club is currently accepting new members.

The Rod and Gun Club offers pistol, rifle, shotgun, and bow shooting. As well, they hold a monthly breakfast, horseshoe league, clam steam, and fish fry. They provide camping sites on their property for members (with electric). Their 100 plus acres of property is available for hiking, trail riding, or hunting. Fish Creek runs along the western boundary and can be fished or used for boating. The club house/pavilion can accommodate up to 400 people.

To become a member, visit the clubhouse and pick up an application (call 518-695-3917 before stopping in to make sure someone is there). You must fill out the application and answer all the questions. You will need a current member of at least one year and in good standing to be your sponsor. When you turn in your application you are required to pay one year of dues and the initiation fee, which is currently $55 and non-refundable. Your membership will be read at the following meeting and tabled for one month. After that one month you and your sponsor will need to attend the next meeting to be voted on.

The game remained 0-0 after the first quarter, and then Schuylerville got on the board and took an 18-0 lead in the second quarter. McGarrahan scored his first TD of the game on a 44 yd rush (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful). McGarrahan then scored again on a 19 yd TD (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful). O. Sherman threw a 3 yd TD pass to Max (2 pt. conversion unsuccessful).

Training got underway at Saratoga Race Course on April 18, and will be staged on the main track to accommodate the completion of a major renovation of the Oklahoma Training Track facility, which is anticipated to open in early May. The 40-day summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, which will feature 76 stakes worth $21.5 million in total purses, will open on Thursday, July 15, and conclude on Monday, Sept. 6.
