MALTA — Globalfoundries is relocating its headquarters to Malta, the site of Fab 8, the company’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility.

GF has invested more than $15 billion in its Fab 8 facility over the last decade to support innovation and manufacturing capacity. In 2021, the company is doubling its planned investment to expand global capacity, with $500 million targeted for Malta alone.

“This is a huge shot in the arm for our Capital Region economy,” U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer explained during an

event held April 26, announcing the company’s plans to relocate its headquarters.

In a prepared statement, the company said the move to its state-of-the-art fab in New York is part of its commitment to address the soaring global chip demand, with a focus on semiconductor manufacturing innovation.

GF will maintain a substantial presence in Santa Clara, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley, where many of GF’s leading U.S. customers and ecosystem partners are based.

Ludovicus Viele - Engineer, Soldier, Politician

gbert Ludovicus Viele died on April 22, 1902 at the age of 77 in New York City after an eventful life that began in Waterford, New York. He was born in 1825, son of Kathlyne Schuyler (Knickerboacker) and State Senator John L. Viele. The title of his newspaper obituary notice “Veteran of Two Wars and Indian Campaigns Passes Away” did little justice to his varied career, nor his personal foibles.

Egbert attended Albany Academy and on July 1, 1847, graduated from West Point and was appointed 2nd Lt. of the infantry and served in the Mexican War. From there he was sent to Laredo Texas, became the Military Governor and conducted successful campaigns against the Indians on the western frontier. By October 1850 he was promoted to 1st Lt. but in 1853 he resigned from the military.

Viele moved to New York City and became the State Engineer for New Jersey, 1854 - 1856. In 1856 he was appointed engineerin-chief of Central Park and in 1860 redesigned both Central Park and Prospect Park. When the Civil War began he rejoined the military on the Union Side.

He became engineering officer of the Seventh Regiment, and was commissioned Brigadier General of Volunteers August 17, 1861 General Viele marched to Washington, forcing the cross of the Potomac River, leading the first troops to reach the capital by that route. He commanded brigades during the Union assaults on the Confederate forces along the southeast coast, first at Port Royal in November 1861, and then the victorious attack on Fort Pulaski on the Savannah River the following April. He participated in the capture of Norfolk, Va., and was named Military Governor of that area later in 1862.

He resigned from the service on October 20,1863 to again follow his career in civil engineering. Moving back to New York City he composed the “Viele Map”, a survey of the original streams and coastline superimposed on the streets of Manhattan, still in use today. 1866 he became a Companion of the New York Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. In 1867, he worked as chief engineer on the Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Rochester Railroad.

From 1883 to 1884 Viele was the commissioner of parks for New York City. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress (1885 – 1887) but was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1886 to the Fiftieth Congress. Egbert resumed his former business pursuits and engaged in literary work.

Viele died from a “sudden attack of indigestion and heart disease” at the age of 77 in New York. He and his second wife, Juliette Dana, are entombed in a pyramid-shaped mausoleum, guarded by a pair of sphinxes, in the Post Cemetery at West Point, New York. Egbert had a buzzer installed in his coffin wired to the house of the Superintendent of West Point to provide rescue if he had accidentally been buried alive.

His father owned mills in Cohoes.

Although undocumented, one can assume he must have returned to Waterford to visit family over the years.

Fire Chief, Saratoga Springs Fire Department Q. How long have you been in the fire department?

A. Since September 1998.

Q. Who would play you in a movie about your life?

A. Kevin James.

Q. How did you get interested in joining the department?

A. I was working for the Ambulance Corps, and my friend told me about taking the test to become a firefighter.

Q. If you could only eat at one local restaurant for the rest of your life, where are you eating?

A. I have eaten Marino’s pizza my entire life, since high school, and I still get it now.

Q. Do you come from a generation of firefighters?

A. I am a first-generation firefighter.

Q. When was the last time you tried something new, and what was it?

A. It wasn’t recent, but I learned to scuba dive, and that was outside of my comfort zone.

Q. Is the department paid or volunteer?

A. We are the only career department in the county.

Q. Has firefighting changed since you became a firefighter?

A. The amount of service has changed – we always get to learn new tactics and techniques, and there is more technology.

Q. When you’re not fighting fires, what do you like to do to relax?

A. I like to listen to music/go to concerts, watch my daughters play softball, and hang out with my wife.

Q. What is the best advice you’ve ever received and who gave it to you?

A. My father always led by example, and taught me that you don’t work until you are tired, you work until the job is done.

Abigail Rose Jenks WILTON — Spc. Abigail Rose “Abby” Jenks, 20, of Challedon Drive, died Monday, April 19, 2021 during a static line training jump from a helicopter. She was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. Born on November 18, 2000 in Pensacola, FL, Abby was the daughter of Mary Jenks and Anthony Taglianetti. She grew up in the GreenfieldSaratoga area. Abby participated in 4-H and had a passion for animals.

She was a 2018 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and then enlisted in the US Army. She was a fire support specialist serving as a forward observer with the brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment. “Spc. Abigail Jenks was a creative, hardworking, and confident paratrooper,” said Army Capt. Brian Norman, who commanded Jenks’ artillery battery. “Her love for art, animals, and her friends reverberated wherever she worked, (and) her compassion for fellow paratroopers will be truly missed.” She was an accomplished artist and tattoo artist.

Abby was engaged to be married to her Fiancé Sgt. Shane Allen Warren Grant of Fort Bragg, NC.

COURT Clifford C. Colvin, 61, of Mechanicville, was sentenced April21 to 1-1/3 to 4 years in state prison, after pleading to aggravated DWI, a felony, in connection with an incident in Malta.

Justen S. Roberts, 24, of Cohoes, pleaded April 21 to felony burglary, and criminal contempt misdemeanor, in connection with an incident in Waterford.

Sentencing June 23.

Zachary J. Golding, 34, of Clifton Park, pleaded April 20 to criminal contempt in the first-degree, a felony, in connection with an incident in Halfmoon. Sentencing July 6.

Bradley J. Vandusen, 56, homeless, was sentenced April 19 to 5 years in state prison, after pleading to attempted arson in the second-degree, a felony, in connection with an incident in Saratoga Springs.

The date of the initial charge was July 27, 2020.

Justin W. Rodgers-Davis, 37, of Fort Edward, was sentenced April 19 to 1-1/3 to 4 years

in state prison, after pleading to felony DWI in connection with an incident in Moreau.

James T. Love, 46, of Wilton, pleaded April 16 to attempted assault in the second-degree.

Sentencing June 25.

Tony J. Prichard, 32, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced April 16 to 2 years in state prison after pleading to criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth-degree, and two sentences of 1-1/3 to 4 years in prison after pleading to two separate counts of felony burglary.

Kelsey A. Irving, 30, of Queensbury, was sentenced to 5 years of probation, after pleading to felony DWI in connection with an incident in Malta.

Patrick F. Phelan, 53, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded April 22 to aggravated vehicular assault, a felony, and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, in connection with an incident in November 2020. According to the Saratoga County District Attorney’s office, Phelan had admitted in court that he operated a motor vehicle in

an intoxicated condition and struck 72-year-old pedestrian Andrew Fincke as he was jogging on the shoulder of Ballston Avenue. Fincke suffered serious injuries as a result. Sentencing scheduled June 24.

POLICE Donald Sutherland, 68, of Milton, was charged April 19 in Saratoga Springs with reckless endangerment in the second-degree.

Joseph Deschenes, 50, of Ballston Spa, was charged April 21 with criminal mischief.

Bernadette Lioi, 39, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 22 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and having no inspection certificate.

Christopher Post, 39, of Saratoga Springs was charged April 22 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and inadequate lights.

Philip Fitzpatrick, 52, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 22 with misdemeanor trespassing.

Yisel Martinez, 42, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April

16 with criminal trespass, and criminal mischief. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Melissa M. Knight, 48, of Saratoga, was charged April 22 with aggravated criminal contempt, two Felony counts of burglary in the first-degree, assault in the third degree, and criminal mischief in the fourth degree. Knight is accused of unlawfully entering a residence and assaulting the occupant of the residence who had a full stay-away order in effect at the time. She is also accused of causing damage inside the residence at the time of the incident. The victim suffered minor injuries, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office.

Arthur J. Allen, 23, of Hadley, was charged April 16 with two felony counts reckless endangerment, and two counts criminal mischief, following an incident that occurred in the Town of Day. Allen is accused of intentionally driving his vehicle into another vehicle and causing a head on collision. Minor injuries were reported by an occupant of the other vehicle.

Daniel M. Perodeau, 27, of Malta, was charged with harassment in the second-degree, felony criminal contempt in the first-degree, obstructing governmental administration in the seconddegree and criminal mischief in the fourth-degree - both misdemeanors, in connection with an alleged domestic dispute, and an active order of protection related to the parties involved, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

Juan C. Pantaleon, 20, Bronx, and Victor Dominguez, 19, Saratoga Springs, were each charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance/ intent to sell - felony, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth-degree – felony. The charges area culmination of an investigation into possible illegal narcotic’s activity taking place at a Kirby Road residence. The search warrant resulted in the seizure of over ½-ounce of powdered cocaine, cutting agents, packaging materials, and just over $1800. Based upon the results, Pantaleon and Dominguez were each charged with both listed offenses.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation has announced the return of the Historic Homes Tour. Join the Foundation and Honorary Co-chairs, Giovanna D’Orazio and Scott Peterson, virtually on Mother’s Day weekend, May 8 & 9, for the popular event that celebrates this community’s rich architectural heritage.

This year’s tour provides the exclusive opportunity to see interiors of beautiful private homes and buildings, including spaces typically not accessible during an in-person tour. The virtual tour of the North Broadway neighborhood will be available throughout the weekend

allowing viewers to experience these special spaces at their leisure.

The Foundation has worked to preserve and enhance the architecture and rich history of our city for more than 40 years. The Historic Homes Tour is the Foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Historic Homes Tour tickets are $30 for SSPF members and $40 for non-members. Funds raised at this event support the Foundation’s efforts to preserve the unique architectural, landscaped, and cultural heritage of Saratoga Springs and ongoing educational programs.

Saratoga County Launches Leadership Program to Encourage Young Women to Participate in Local Government BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors this week launched the Saratoga County Women in Government Leadership Program, an initiative designed to educate high school girls about with the functions and responsibilities of local government and inspire them to take on leadership roles at the local level.

The program was launched by the three women on the Board of Supervisors: Jean Raymond, of the Town of Edinburgh, Tara N. Gaston of the City of Saratoga Springs, and Sandra Winney of the Town of Providence. New York

State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul provided a recorded statement during the event, to help introduce the new program.

“We need more women present in all levels of government, and there’s no better place to begin one’s public service journey that at the county level,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.

The program, developed in coordination with Soroptimist International of Saratoga County, will engage participants on topics including setting goals, overcoming obstacles, and building confidence.

"Representation and engagement lead to better communities,” said Supervisor Tara N. Gaston, City of Saratoga Springs. “These experiences and relationships gained will benefit Saratoga County, whether or not these young women end up in public service.”

Approximately 20 participants will participate in the first year, with selection based on an application including responses to short answer questions about what they hope to get out of the program and who they see as examples of leadership in their

own lives. Applications will be forwarded to the Supervisors of their town/city, and each Supervisor will select one participant.

Locally, dating back to 1990, four of the past eight city mayors in Saratoga Springs have been women, and the majority of the current City Council is comprised of women.

The New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Women’s Leadership Council will work with Saratoga County to develop the program as a pilot that can be expanded to counties across the state. For more information about The NYSAC Women’s Leadership Council, go to: nysac.org/womensleadership.

Hannaford Supermarkets Achieves Sustainability Milestone: Grocer Sends No Food Waste To Landfills SARATOGA SPRINGS — Hannaford Supermarkets announced that each of its 183 stores donates or diverts all food at risk of going to waste, sending no food at all to landfills.

The accomplishment, which is the culmination of a decade-long effort, makes Hannaford the first large-scale grocery retailer across its New England and New York market to meet this goal. The accomplishment also highlights that Hannaford is an industry leader in managing food waste and in working to address climate change.

Hannaford achieved the milestone with a multi-pronged approach focused on first preventing food waste through strategic product ordering and management at the store level. Hannaford associates are trained on how to responsibility handle food to avoid damage and exposure to temperature variation.

Each Hannaford store also strictly follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Food Recovery Hierarchy, which prioritizes the rescue of surplus product for donation to food insecure individuals – generating millions of meals donated annually.

Other key elements of Hannaford’s food waste diversion program include donations to local farmers for animal feed and food-toenergy conversion efforts.

Hannaford’s adherence to this process kept 65 million pounds of food waste from reaching landfills in 2020.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as much as 40 percent of all food in the U.S. is wasted along

its journey from farm to table, eventually ending up in landfills and generating harmful greenhouse gases. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. per capita waste has increased by 50 percent since 1974 and the average person throws away 250 pounds of food per year.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Approximately 120,000 Saratoga County residents - just over half the total county population - have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and of those more than 91,000 have completed the vaccine series.

Those numbers match similarly to the percent of the vaccinated population in neighboring Albany, Schenectady, and Warren counties. Under that 50% threshold: about 47% of Rensselaer County residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and about 38% in Washington County have done so, as of April 28.

“We’ve reached the point locally where our (vaccine) supply is appearing to be greater than the demand. We’ve had some openings and that hasn’t happened in a long time,” said Saratoga Springs Supervisor Tara Gaston, who is also chair of the Saratoga County Health Committee.

“What we’re looking at now is: Where is the population that wants the vaccine, but hasn’t been able to access it - and what are the barriers? We’ve started working on some things – farm workers, migrant workers, groups like food pantry workers and those who

just don’t have the time to find a spot and then arrange to go there twice,” Gaston said.

“We’re also looking at whether a business or a certain community needs it, where are there 50 or 100 people. We’ve done the stats from around the county and I’m working directly with the supervisors in those zip codes with the lowest rates. Do we need a POD (Point of Dispensing) in your town? Saratoga Hospital Named to List Among “The World’s Best” SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital has been named one of “The World’s Best Hospitals 2021” by Newsweek—a distinction earned by just six hospitals in the state. This Derby will prohibit use of race-day medications, a decision not without some controversy. How some runners react to racing 10- furlongs for the first time without medication is a new known unknown for fans and bettors. The industry’s goal, however, is to ban the use of race day medications by 2022.

A full field of 20 will again meet the starter. Contention begins with prep race winners and moves to “sneaky good” non-winners. Note, however, that the public’s “live” odds board continues to be a most reliable predictor of both contention and results. The winner will most likely emerge from among the public’s first 7-8 betting choices.

(6) O Besos closed powerfully from the rear in that Louisiana Derby, and a repeat puts him in the mix. (11) Dynamic One, also trained by Pletcher, did everything but win the Wood Memorial when jockey Jose Ortiz did not see closing winner (20) Bourbonic rallying to his outside.

So, I have knocks against the 1st and 5th morning linemakers choices.

That leaves me with (9) Hot Rod Charlie, (16) Rock Your World, (11) Dynamic One, (6) O Besos, and (1) Known Agenda as my “key” horses, with questions surrounding both (8) Medina Spirit and (7) Mandaloun.

Statistics support the winner emerging from the first 7-8 public betting choices. Start with Morning Line odds. Then follow “live” odds, which will not change much from start to finish. Stick with the first 7-8 choices and you will most likely find the winner. But stats are predictors, not determiners. And Derby winners Victory Gallup, Thunder Gulch, Giacomo and Mine That Bird were among the longest odds when they won their Kentucky Derby.

In our business as health insurance brokers, we often come across people newly enrolling in Medicare who request to be placed on the same Advantage plan as a friend or neighbor.

When this happens, we often must slow the person down and remind them that, unlike group or employer health insurance, Medicare Advantage plans are individual. This means a plan that may work well for another person’s health circumstances may not be best suited for yours.

This principle is perhaps best illustrated when comparing drug pricing between Advantage

plans. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that oversees the Medicare program, classifies prescription drugs into five tiers based on their price, with the least expensive prescriptions generally falling into tier 1 and the most expensive into tier 5.

At this point, many people exclaim: “See, Medicare has done all the hard work for me!

All I have to do is know what tiers my prescriptions are in and I’m all set!” However, this response does not consider the fact that CMS gives individual Medicare Advantage plans broad discretion over the tier they assign to a drug and any deductibles and copays they impose. In other words, a

tier 3 drug on one Advantage plan could be classified as a tier 4 on another, with vastly higher deductibles and copays.

As an example, we recently did a drug comparison for a gentleman using two similar zero-premium Advantage plans available here in the Capital District. For the same prescriptions, we estimated that one plan would charge $164 per year while the other would charge $1,240, a projected annual difference of $1,076. Again, these projections were for the same prescriptions for the same person.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nine local WSWHE BOCES CTE/ECCA students have earned the title of New York State SkillsUSA Champion.

The Washington-SaratogaWarren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) division, which includes the Early College Career Academy (ECCA), participated in the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Championships from April 12 to April 22. The championships were conducted virtually, with some competitions being recorded and some being livestreamed with judges from across New York State. There were 600 students from New York State who competed, and nine local students were declared champions in their respective fields.

studs; cut and install common, hip, and jack rafters; stair stringer and install drywall, siding, sheathing, baseboard molding, and window trim. He was assessed on accuracy, workmanship, the ability to read and interpret blueprints, and the proper use of tools and equipment.

Brandon Coulter, a junior from Queensbury in the ECCA IT Essentials Program, won first place in Job Interview. The Job Interview contest was evaluated in three parts: resume, completion of an employment application, and an interview with industry professionals.

Tyler Brooks, a junior from Whitehall in the ECCA IT Essentials Program, won first place in Job Skill Demonstration Open (team of two); his teammate, Mathew Richard, is a junior from Lake George. The contest assesses each contestant’s ability to demonstrate and explain an entry level technical skill used either in the occupational area for which he or she is training or outside the training area.

Patrick Fayette, a senior from Queensbury in the Culinary Arts Program, won first place in Restaurant Service. The Restaurant Service competition focuses on guest service/relations in the dining room and “front of the house” skills of guest hospitality and food and beverage services.

A team of four seniors from the ECCA Business Program – Justin Garfolo (Saratoga Springs), Elizabeth Radyn (Lake George), Aeryn Brewer (Corinth), and Ella Crossman (Glens Falls) – won first place in Entrepreneurship.

The team was evaluated on their success to formulate a business plan, present a business presentation, and respond to changes that may occur during operation. They submitted a resume, business plan, and did an oral presentation.

In addition, twenty local students earned second and third place at the state competition.

In terms of medals won at the State Championships, WSWHE BOCES is one of the top New York schools.

BOE Candidate Connie Woytowich Knows “It Takes A Village” I’m writing to you about Connie Woytowich, a brilliant woman and strong candidate for Saratoga’s Board of education. Connie is a mother of four and a NYS master teacher with over 20 years of experience. As a mother and a professional, I stand in awe of Connie’s dedication to our community.

When my eldest began kindergarten, Connie was the PTA President.

Her thoughtful leadership ensured that our first experiences in Saratoga Schools were amazing. Our school’s fun and educational STEM Expo, which Connie not only built from the ground up, but has improved on and added to each year has remained a family favorite. Connie was also the past director of Camp Invention, which our children absolutely loved. As parents, we were thrilled to have our children inspired and challenged in a fun and exciting way.

As a neighbor, Connie will always be known for her friendliness, willingness to help and ability to bring people together. Each Labor Day, she organized a back-to-school breakfast for the families on and around her street to help get everyone in back-to-school mode.

Connie knows that “it takes a village.” Her commitment to kids, families and community is needed now more than ever.

The Saratoga County Sundae on the Farm Agricultural Scholarship is currently accepting applications for the 2021 award. The scholarship is available to a person(s) who resides within Saratoga County and is successfully attending and pursuing an agricultural degree at a college or university and/or pursuing an agricultural career to seek employment in the

agricultural industry entering their sophomore year of any academic year beyond, including graduate studies. Previous recipients have included students attending establishments such as Cornell University, Murray State University, and SUNY Cobleskill while studying such subjects as animal science, agricultural education, and agricultural business.

IS A SUMMER HOME WHERE CAMPERS CAN EXPERIENCE FUN, FRIENDSHIPS, CHALLENGES, AND ADVENTURES. Camp Little Notch (CLN), provides the chance to practice living in harmony with nature, each other, and themselves in an authentic wilderness experience.

Within five minutes of arriving, campers have half a dozen new friends who often become friends for life.

There are so many things to do at Camp Little Notch— swimming, canoeing, cookouts, stargazing, singing, wilderness skills, creek-walking…the list goes on.

Campers sleep in a platform tent, watch the sun come up over the mountains, and listen to the sounds of the forest at night all combined to make an unforgettable summer experience.

Camp Little Notch brings people of various backgrounds together through activities that break down barriers and create a community where campers value themselves and each other. We consciously and deliberately use a variety of tools to create a camp community in which we celebrate diversity, encourage community building, teach conflict resolution and communication skills, facilitate sharing of traditions between people, and confront all forms of discrimination, prejudice, and exclusion in our interactions, operations, and activities.

From 1939 to 2008, the Girl Scouts owned and operated Camp Little Notch as a summer camp for girls. In 2015, Friends of Camp Little Notch reopened CLN to the public, and then invited boys to camp for the first time in 2018. We felt that camping is such an important part of growing up that everyone, girls and boys, should be able to experience the magic of CLN.

This year to safeguard against COVID-19, Camp Little Notch will be offering 1-week, 2-week, and 4-week camp sessions all in a safe environment. CLN will become its own bubble, and therefore campers will be able to experience a typical camp experience without worry. Camper parents will be able to contact their campers via snail mail or email. Our first session begins July 3, 2021, with the last session ending August 7, 2021.

For the first time, Camp Little Notch will also be offering family camping this summer to those looking for a fresh-air escape from home. Families will be able to come to CLN in a COVID-19 safe environment.

pring is in the air, and we are eager to move outdoors for our summer market season.

May 1 marks the beginning of the 43rd outdoor market season for the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, the area’s longest-running, producer-only farmers’ market. The Saturday market will open at the current location, the Wilton Mall Bon-Ton parking lot, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Wednesday market will open at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs from 3 to 6 p.m. every week.

The location split results from various factors, including COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, customer parking, accessibility, and community feedback. A recent survey with more than 700 responses resulted in an even split in public opinion on holding markets downtown versus the Wilton Mall.

This year’s weekly Saturday markets will feature more than 70 vendors selling fresh produce, dairy products, eggs, meat, poultry, flowers, prepared foods, and more. The Wednesday markets will feature about 20 vendors with a similar range of products. Both markets will also include music, community guests, and periodic special events like Saturday’s Blueberry Festival in July and Power of Produce (POP) Club for kids on Wednesdays this summer.

We are excited to welcome new and returning vendors into the mix carrying a variety of products. The Saratoga Farmers’ Market has remained committed to creating a safe environment for both vendors and customers, including handwashing and sanitizing stations, social distancing, and mask requirements. As we move into the summer season, we will continue to enforce these state-issued regulations for the health and safety of our community.

The addition of an online ordering and curbside pickup program has provided an alternative for customers to safely and conveniently access local goods without having to shop inside the market. Cinco de Mayo

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Next week is Cinco de Mayo. Many of us foodies may be planning some type of festivity for this day. And what better way to celebrate than to eat delicious Mexican food. Our son lives in San Diego. The city is renowned for its wide selection of excellent Mexican restaurants and influence on the cuisine in that area.

Mexican food is a major player on the San Diego food scene. Our son has also learned to add many Mexican flavors to his regular meals. One of his favorite things to do is to work with avocados and make guacamole or to get creative with salsas. To make the guacamole, the molcajete (a black volcanic rock) connects with making amazing and laborious Mexican dishes. One of those dishes is a salsa cruda, which is a red raw spicy salsa. The molcajete can be a very valuable object to assist when making your guacamole or salsa this Cinco de Mayo. The molcajete is among the world’s oldest culinary tools, volcanic rock mortars and pestles like these have been used by great cooks for thousands of years. Our molcajete (mortar) and tejolete (pestle) are hand carved from a single piece of basalt rock, so every piece is unique. In addition to being a great prep tool, the molcajete makes an impressive serving dish for guacamole and other party favorites. It is perfect for crushing whole spices and making spice blends, ideal for blending and serving guacamole—or for making pesto and other rustic sauces. You can line the molcajete with lettuce leaves to use as an all-purpose serving bowl. The rough interior texture of mortar helps crush and grind ingredients and it has a heavy pestle that does the work for you, ensuring efficient grinding, blending and mixing.

To make guacamole, all you really need to make guacamole is ripe avocados and salt. After that, a little lime or lemon juice—a splash of acidity to balance the richness of the avocado. Then comes chopped cilantro, chiles, onion, and tomato, if you want. The trick to making perfect guacamole is using good, ripe avocados. Check for ripeness by gently pressing the outside of the avocado. If there is no give, the avocado is not ripe yet and will not taste good. If there is a little give, the avocado is ripe. If there is a lot of give, the avocado may be past ripe and not good. In this case, taste test first before using.

• 1 tablespoon Mexican lime juice • 1/3 cup peeled, deseeded, finely chopped and drained cucumbers

• Freshly ground mixed peppercorns (black, green, white, pink, Szechuan) • Round tortilla chips • Grated cotija, as an accompaniment

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Mash the garlic in the bottom of the molcajete (lava-stone mortar) using the rejolote (lava-stone pestle). Then crush the cilantro leaves. Mix in pulp from avocado and follow with a scattering of the rock crystals. Pour in lime juice, add cucumbers, and give a few good twists of pepper.

2. Stir together and serve from the molcajete (or any mixing bowl). Place a sampling onto round tortilla chips and top with a sprinkle of cotija (a white Mexican cow’s milk cheese

Nonprofit Seeks Local Artists Who Are Patients and Caregivers SARATOGA SPRINGS — Calling all artists living with or caring for someone living with a chronic illness, rare disease, or disability: Saratoga-based nonprofit, Beyond My Battle, is holding its third annual “Art with Heart & Hope” showcasing and sharing the ways art can help manage the many stressors of

living with, or caring for someone living with, illness or disability.

Home Made Theater Holds Open Auditions for Nunsense SARATOGA SPRINGS — Home Made Theater announces open auditions for their June production of Nunsense, book, music, and lyrics by Dan Goggin and directed by Dawn Oesch. Auditions will be held through Zoom on Tuesday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 5 from 6:30-9 p.m. All roles are open to actors of all ethnicities and gender identifications.

Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are

in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show . The entertainment that they present includes solo star turns, madcap dance routines, and an audience quiz.

Production dates are June 11-12, 18-19 (two shows on Saturdays) at The Mansion Inn in Rock City Falls. Rehearsals will start on Monday, May 10 and will generally run Monday through Thursday evenings (with an occasional Sunday).

A LIFETIME IN PICTURES: Spa City has Played a Role in a Number of Films

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Film crews set up a series of shooting locations in the Spa City the past week - Railroad Place and Caroline Street among them - where segments for an independent movie titled “Paint” are being captured.

The film – directed by wBrit McAdams – features Owen Wilson, Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Lusia Strus, and Stephen Root. The script centers on “Carl Nagle” – a fictional character whom, in visual context anyway appears not unlike the late Bob Ross – best known as the host of the instructional PBS TV program in the 1980s and ‘90s, The Joy of Painting.

While not the most common occurrence, the Spa City has performed a number of times as a setting for the film industry.

“Saratoga” filmed in part at Saratoga Race Course, stars Clark Gable, Lionel Barrymore, and Jean Harlow – the latter in her final film. Harlow collapsed on set during the making of the film, and her unfinished scenes were completed by using a stand-in actress. A few years later,

the racecourse made another appearance with the 1947 film “The Homestretch.”

Here, a Boston socialite – portrayed by Maureen O’Hara, navigates across a landscape of various American racetracks and through one rocky marriage. The racecourse also was featured in the 1979 made-fortelevision drama film “My Old Man,” starring Kristy McNichol.

Perhaps the most prominent appearance of the racecourse, at least in the modern day, was in the adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction bestseller, “Seabiscuit: An American Legend.” During a week-long shoot following the conclusion of the 2002 summer meet, a crew of more than 200 people settled into the Saratoga region transforming the racecourse into a circa-1920s and ‘30s setting.

When the film was released the following year, locals scanned the silver screen for their own faces as film extras alongside actors such as Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges.

A number of Victorian-era homes on and around North Broadway provided the setting for the 1981 film “Ghost Story,” that showcased performances by John Houseman, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Fred Astaire, and multiple scenes across the Saratoga County region were used alongside

additional settings in Montana and California in the 1998 movie “The Horse Whisperer.” Robert Redford directed and starred in the film, which garnered praise and attention for a 13-yearold relatively unknown Scarlett Johansson, portraying a teenager traumatized by a riding accident.

In the fall of 1990, 3,000 area hopefuls tried out as extras for the filming of “Billy Bathgate.”

Approximately one-third were chosen for the three-week shoot at Saratoga Race Course, the Hall of Springs and at the Gideon Putnam Hotel. Film fans snooped around the region for the film’s stars Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Willis, Nicole Kidman and then-boyfriend Tom Cruise. Kidman was filmed dancing in the Hall of Springs in the Saratoga Spa State Park.

Historically incorporating portions of the Saratoga story is “12 Years a Slave” (the Solomon Northup story) – released in 2013, and “Saratoga Trunk,” released in 1945 with Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.

In 2005, the city provided a setting for the films “Aftermath” which featured Anthony Michael Hall, Tony Danza and Chris Penn - and the dramatic thriller “The Skeptic” - with a cast that included Tom Arnold and Tim Daly.

Saratoga Springs native Chris Millis debuted the local premiere of his film “Small Apartments” – starring Billy Crystal and James Caan - in a sold out event at Saratoga Music Hall in 2013, and local resident and filmmaker and photojournalist Charlie Samuels released his award-winning and critically acclaimed documentary “Virgin Blacktop: A New York Skate Odyssey,” last year.

depicts a young man who attempts to stave off eviction turns his Saratoga house into a brothel, and “Isabelle,” is a horror-filled 2018 film that showcases the life of Matt and Larissa, a young couple who move into their dream home in Saratoga Springs.

Springtime Largemouth Bass Patterns and Techniques

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been itching to get your boat out on one of our local lakes. The water is finally warming up to the point where the fish are actively feeding and seeking forage. Despite not being able to actively target bass during the spring months in previous years, DEC now allows catch and release Largemouth Bass year round, as long as you are using artificial lures and not live bait.

Certain bodies of water may have special regulations, so as a general guideline, always be sure to check them for your specific lake before you head out. The majority of bass fishermen tend to catch and release year round anyway, but being allowed to target Largemouth Bass in spring provides an angler with the chance to catch a true monster.

Like many fishermen, I always find the first few weeks of ice out to be a difficult, but rewarding time to target bass.

I tend to start searching for Largemouth Bass in early spring around the same areas that I was catching them in the fall.

In the fall they always seem to be schooled up in two different areas; these areas being deeper weed beds and drop offs. What I mean by deeper weed beds is weed clumps in 12-15’ of water, instead of the 3-8’ weed beds that fish can hold on in the summer.

Most of us have a favorite lake that we fish, so we usually know all the specific details about it. In the lakes that I fish, like Saratoga

Lake and Lake Lonely, I know which weed beds will die off in the winter and which weed beds remain and hold fish all year.

Knowing where these healthy weeds are can make a huge difference in finding fish. Weed beds that stay healthy all winter will always hold baitfish, so there is a certain population of bass that never moves far away from those areas.

The bass will be lethargic from the cold water so I always do well on slow moving presentations. My top choices would be a deep crankbait, a deep suspending jerkbait, and sometimes a simple 3/8oz swimbait head with a 3” white swimbait. Deep diving crankbaits do well this time of year because you can reach the deeper fish and slow roll your presentation. Largemouth Bass will not want to expend much energy when feeding, but at the same time won’t turn down an easy meal. I will also tend to use a jerkbait designed to reach depths of more than 12 feet, which can target those fish feeding in the deeper weed beds and on drop offs. I always make sure that when I’m working my presentations this time of year, I give them extremely long pauses to make up for the lethargic nature of the fish. When fish are schooled up in fall, I tend to catch them on white swimbaits as they are feeding hard on baitfish before winter. So there are also times in early spring

where I will go back to the same areas where fish were schooled up in fall, and catch them again on the same swimbaits.

As we begin to get some warmer weather days, temperature then plays a huge role as far as finding fish goes. When the water begins to reach the mid-forties, the spots that are a few degrees warmer than the rest of the lake will hold more fish. You want to target the shallower areas of the lake you’re fishing that have a darker colored bottom, because these are the areas that will warm up the fastest. The fish will begin moving into their pre-spawn patterns and will actively search out the warmest water. Largemouth Bass will eventually spawn at these spots when the water is warm enough; this usually happens around Mid to late May. Although not every fish tends to move into these areas immediately, this is where I consistently find the biggest and most active Largemouth Bass.

Crayfish will also begin to emerge from their winter hibernation under the mud and provide easy meals for spring bass. A key factor about crayfish this time of year is their coloration and behavior. Once the water hits the upperforties and low-fifties, the male crayfish emerge first and begin seeking out their mates. This makes them an easy target for hungry largemouth bass. They tend to turn reddish in the spring when they first begin molting. Molting occurs

when a crayfish sheds its old shell in exchange for a larger new one, which happens a few times a year.

This molted, soft shell crayfish, will have a reddish appearance until its shell darkens. Some people also believe they can obtain a red tint in the spring due to the clay environment they were burrowed in all winter. Both factors allow bass to actively seek out that bright red color in the springtime. Not every lake seems to have “bright red” crayfish, but I’ve still found the color red to be key in spring. The warmest water in the lake will most likely be murky, so the color red shows up well. To match the hatch I will throw red lures that imitate a fleeing crayfish. These include craw colored squarebills, lipless crankbaits, jigs, and chatterbaits. If red colored lures don’t end up producing for you, two other staple colors to throw are white and black/ blue. Black and Blue produces year round for me and excels in the muddier waters around us. Then white is always a good color to imitate a baitfish and will work in all water conditions.

Although we can now target Largemouth Bass year round, it is still our job as sportsmen to be

extremely careful when handling these fish this time of year.

They are pre-spawn and will soon be spawning in shallow water, so it is imperative that these fish are released healthy. This is also a great time of year for fishermen that do not have access to a boat, because the fish can be caught casting close to shore. I will also be booking fishing trips for Lake Lonely, Saratoga Lake, and Lake George for those who want a more guided fishing experience.

PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Athletes form the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center performed exceptionally well at the Punta Cana World Cup in the Dominican Republic, capturing four total medals. Kell Berliner (26) took a gold in the 81kg division and jumped 20 slots on the world

ranking list (WRL) to a career high #100. Nicole Stout (23) was also golden as she won the 70kg weight class and entered the WRL for the first time at 70kg at #117.

Stout has recently moved down from 78kg where she is ranked #84. Melissa Myers (25) earned her first international medal taking a bronze at 70kg, losing

only to JMJC teammate Stout in the semis. Myers enters the WRL for the first time and sits at #148.

Max Alaynick (20) took his first international medal, winning a bronze at 81kg and enters the WRL at #236. Alex Alaynick (25) was 5th at 81kg, which puts him on the WRL for the first time as well, coming in at #260.

Congrats to Athlete of the Week – Audrey Letts!

Audrey is a senior at Saratoga Springs High School and rows with the SRA (Saratoga Rowing Association). She trains crew all year round, and competes in the fall and spring. Some of her rowing accomplishments include being selected to row at the Head of the Charles her sophomore year and junior year, competing in the Scholastic Nationals in the 2v 8+ her sophomore year and placing third, and also being selected as a sophomore to represent SRA at Youth Nationals in the 8+. Audrey has been recruited to row Division I at The George Washington University (GW) in the fall.

When Audrey is not rowing, she is Irish Dancing.

She has been dancing for almost 12 years, and has performed in local parades, at independent living facilities, and at schools.

Some of her academic accomplishments include maintaining a high honor roll GPA for all four years of high school, taking a total of nine AP classes by graduation, participating in Tri-M Music Honor Society, being selected for the Chamber Orchestra, and participating in the National Honor Society. At GW, she plans to major in Biology on a pre-med track.

Saratoga Springs Little League Opening Ceremony SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Little League (SSLL) held their opening ceremonies this past Saturday, April 24.

The opening event this year was split into three different ceremonies to avoid crowds and allow for social distancing. At each ceremony, Abby DeGregory, daughter of board member Tim DeGregory, and Nora Taliaferro sang the national anthem. Caden Cameron, who is in his first year in the Majors Division, read the Little League Pledge for each ceremony as well.

Jackets were handed out to the 12-year-old boys who will be transitioning out of Little League after this season. The jackets are personalized with each kid’s name, and were generously donated by Mrs. Fitzpatrick. Mrs. Fitzpatrick, who was in attendance, is the wife of a late sponsor of many years.

There will still be a Fitzpatrick’s team this year, as there is every year.

The SSLL has 6 different divisions/ levels of play from ages 4 to 13 years old, including a Challenger Division for individuals with disabilities.

Monica Isenovski, Marketing and PR Manager for the SSLL, says that everything the league does is made possible by the board members and volunteers, some who don’t even have children in the program anymore. Such as SSLL President, Derrick LeGall, who has been volunteering for approximately 20 years.

“Many of them don’t even have children in the league anymore, but they continue to devote their time because of the wonderful experinces their families have had,” said Isenovski. “And, they wish to continue that for the next generation of little leaguers.”

Local Teen Advances to the National Hoop Shoot Finals WILTON — ­ A local teen’s foul shooting skills have advanced him to the Elks National Hoop Shoot Finals. After winning the National Regionals of the Elks Hoop Shoot competition, Evan Rosettie, from the Town of Wilton, competed in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Finals on Saturday, April 24. Both competitions were done virtually.

On April 1, Evan competed in the Boys’ 12-13 Year Old Division of the National Regionals of the Elks Hoop Shoot competition. He was crowned the winner after making 24 out of 25 free throws, more than his competitors, who were state champions from New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

On April 24, Evan advanced to the Elks National Hoop Shoot

Finals, where he made all 25 of his free throws. He then shot 5 sets of 5 for tiebreakers, in the event that other contestants also make all 25 shots. Evan’s score will be compared against eight other National Regional winners.

The Elks National Hoop Shoot is a free foul shooting contest for youth ages 8 to 13, and advances through local, district, state, and regional contests before the National Finals.

Six national champions are selected, and their names are permanently inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Normally, the annual National Finals are held in Chicago, but were conducted virtually this year due to COVIDrelated restrictions. The winners will be announced on May 15.

“We never would have imagined he would have gotten this far,” said Kara Rosettie, Evan’s mother.

“So many kids do this, but he is just so dedicated.”

Evan has been playing basketball since second grade, when he joined Gavin Park’s Jr. NBA Youth Basketball Program with his friends. He also plays on the CDYBL (Capital District Youth Basketball League) team for Saratoga and the Saratoga Battle AAU team. To practice for his competitions, Evan spent an hour almost every day in the gym working on his shooting.

The last local teen to get this far in the Elks Hoop Shoot competition was Joe Girard III, who now plays basketball for Syracuse University.

VARSITY SOCCER BOYS: SCHUYLERVILLE V. HUDSON FALLS HUDSON FALLS — On Thursday, April 22, Schuylerville Boy’s Varsity Soccer battled against Hudson Falls in a game that Schuylerville won 1-0 in overtime. Schuylerville controlled the game tempo and Hudson Falls’ defense dug in what turned out to be a very physical game in regulation time. Within a minute into overtime, Lucas Cottrell scored the game winner on an assist from Liam Armstrong to secure a 1-0 shutout win over the Tigers. Goalie Joe Lapan (Hudson Falls) blocked a PK and had 23 saves. This was goalie Griffin Brophy’s second shutout game for Schuylerville.

SCHUYLERVILLE V. AMSTERDAM CHUYLERVILLE — On Saturday, April 24, Schuylerville Boys’ Varsity Soccer took on Amsterdam and came away with another shutout win. Reid Rockhill scored on an assist from Liam Armstrong one minute into the game. In the 74th minute, Chris Jones finished the scoring for the 2-0 final score.

Griffin Brophy had 2 saves for the Horses, while Lucca Quantrini stopped 10 shots for Amsterdam.

BALLSTON SPA V. QUEENSBURY BALLSTON SPA – April 27, the Ballston Spa Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team celebrated its senior night with a 3-0 win over Queensbury. Brayden Box scored the first and last goals, and Justin Waters scored the second.

The Scotties finish the season 9-3-1.

GIRLS SARATOGA CENTRAL CATHOLIC V. TAMARAC SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Central Catholic Girls’ Varsity Soccer played Tamarac at home on Saturday, April 24. Tamarac came away with a 4-0 win. Goalie Emily Wenke (Spa Catholic) broke her own school record with 32 saves.

SARATOGA CENTRAL CATHOLIC V. WATERFORD SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Central Catholic Girls’ Varsity Soccer recorded a 5-1 win against Waterford on Monday, April 26. Spa Catholic’s goalie Emily Wenke broke her own school record for the second time this season with 35 saves.

Eighth grader Aila Cartier scored one of the goals that led to Spa Catholic’s victory.

Saratoga County History Center Announces Participation in 16th Annual Canal Clean Sweep

SARATOGA COUNTY — The Saratoga County History Center participated in the statewide “Spring Cleaning” activities along New York State Canal System, April 24-25. Scheduled to honor Earth Day 2021, this multicommunity celebration is the product of a partnership between the New York State Canal Corporation and Parks & Trails New York.

On Saturday, April 24, trustees, staff, and members of the History Center teamed-up with the Quaker Springs Country Kids 4-H Club to clean-up the Old Champlain Towpath Canal Trail in the towns of Saratoga and Stillwater. The

following day, History Center folks were joined by New York State Senator Daphne Jordan (R, C, I-Halfmoon), Saratoga Deputy Town Supervisor Michael McLaughlin, and students from the Notre Dame Visitation Church School to restore the March to Surrender Canal Trail in Saratoga.

Beginning with the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, the 524-mile New York State Canal System is comprised of four waterways: the Erie, the Champlain, the Oswego, and the Cayuga-Seneca Canals.

The Canalway Trail System saw increased use in 2020, with nearly 3.9 million visits to the 360-mile Erie Canalway Trail, a more than 30% increase over 2019.
