Trial of District Attorney Charles Andrus

n May 11, 1921, Saratoga County District Attorney Charles Andrus stood before Justice Henry Borst at the courthouse in Ballston Spa for the start of a criminal trial. It must have been a strange feeling that day for Andrus because unlike countless other times before the court, this time the District Attorney was seated at the defendant’s table.

He had been indicted on charges of neglect of duty, bribery, and corruption. His trial would be extraordinary on many levels.

To begin with, Andrus was being prosecuted by Special Deputy Attorney General Wyman Bascom, appointed by Governor Alfred Smith. Bascom was assisted by former New York State Senator and longtime republican power broker in Saratoga, Edgar T. Brackett. Brackett had once been the attorney for the “Prince of the Gamblers,” Richard Canfield. He was now firmly in the anti- gambling camp and a bitter political enemy of Andrus.

Andrus was defended by attorney William Fallon. Known as “The Great Mouthpiece,” Fallon specialized in obtaining acquittals for his clients (usually through bribing jurors) and was the attorney for the notorious gangster Arnold Rothstein.

Among the witnesses against Andrus were low-level gamblers and associates of Arnold Rothstein, Cornelius Fellows and Benny Russell who both were partners of Rothstein in the gambling at the Arrowhead Inn near Saratoga Lake.

Fellows and Russell, along with a local man named Jules Formel and a New York City gambler named John Ward were partners in a gambling venture with Rachel Brown at 210 South Broadway in Saratoga Springs in July 1919. After spending the summer of 1919 gambling in Saratoga Springs, Rachel Brown headed over to Chicago and got mixed up in the notorious “Black Sox” Scandal in which several Rothstein associates, including Brown, were indicted for trying to fix the World Series.

by police. The following afternoon, Rachel Brown and his friends made a trip to the police station and stole the evidence from one of the jail cells with the help of police sergeant Edward Carroll. Three weeks later, police raided another game on Circular Street and seized back some of the evidence that had been stolen from them. Within six months, Sergeant Carroll was promoted to Chief of Police. All this prompted Governor Smith to appoint Bascom and his investigation led to the charges against Andrus who was apparently mixed up with the gamblers at 210 South Broadway.

Other witnesses testified that Andrus was upset that Formel had made $3800 in payoffs but still owed $4000 and therefore had orchestrated the raids in 1919 and that Brown once held up $4300 and yelled “This is for the District Attorney!” in a crowded gambling den. Andrus had negotiated a settlement between Russell and Formel when Russell backed out of the plan, and open gambling had been allowed by the District Attorney in no less than fifteen places throughout the city, including one practically next door to Andrus’ office on Broadway.

During the trial of District Attorney Andrus, John Ward testified that he, Formel, and Russell had met with Andrus in the spring of 1919 and had received approval from the District Attorney to open up. He further stated that Andrus had been paid over $2500 in protection money for the gambling at 210 South Broadway during the summer of 1919 before the raids put an end to the operation.

Andrus never took the stand to deny the specific allegations and his lawyers never bothered to deny them either. Rather, the defense merely claimed that it was the job of the police to make arrests, not the District Attorney, and that the whole investigation was politically motivated.

Wyman Bascom attempted to introduce a ledger into evidence that showed the payoff for one night’s gambling at 210 South Broadway. Ward did not need the paper to explain the payoff system. The top line showed that twenty-five percent of the night’s take was to be given to “The Boss.”

The remaining split of the profits was; thirty-three percent each to himself and Formel, fifteen percent to Rachel Brown, twelve percent to Russell and seven percent to Fellows.

Despite all the evidence to the contrary, the jury returned the verdict on May 17, 1921. By a vote of 11-1, NOT GUILTY! In response to the good news, some of Andrus’ supporters rioted in celebration. Racing up and down Broadway, pulling fire alarms, vandalizing the porches of citizens who supported the prosecution, and lighting a fire on the front lawn of Senator Brackett while breaking out the windows of his home. In true Saratoga fashion, seven months after his acquittal, Charles Andrus was re-elected to the office of District Attorney for Saratoga County.

A. About 20 years. I attended horticulture at BOCES. I got my business degree from SUNY ADK and my horticulture degree from SUNY Cobleskill. I’ve worked in florist shops ever since.

Q. How long have you been the owner of Posie Peddler?

A. I have been at Posie Peddler for 10 years. I purchased it last November.

Q. What types of flowers/plants do you sell?

A. Some of the things we sell are cut flowers, vase-ready arrangements, home décor, garden décor, and garden plants.

Q. What is the most popular flower you sell this time of the year?

A. There is not one flower we sell more of. This time of the year it is more along the lines of outdoor plants (hanging baskets, container gardens, etc.) as people extend their living spaces outdoors.

Q. Did you see a lot of business on Mother’s Day? A. Yes, it was unbelievable. One of the busiest I’ve ever seen.

Q. What are the most popular months for weddings, and what services do you offer for those?

A. June, September, and October. We provide delivery and set up of ceremony arrangements, centerpieces, etc. All your flower needs for a wedding.

Q. What is your personal favorite flower or plant?

A. My favorite flower is Bells of Ireland.

Q. When was the last time you tried something new, and what was it?

A. November – when I bought the business. I was scared at first, but I jumped and have never looked back.

Q. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A. If you do something you love, you never work a day in your life.

4 Henry Johnson, Sr.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Henry Johnson, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home in Saratoga Springs, NY at the age of 92 with his family by his side. He was born to parents Vaner (Nuppa) and Ina Johnson, on 17 December 1928 in Barnstable, MA. He lived a very rich and full life. The son of immigrant Finnish cranberry farmers from Cape Cod; Henry worked his way through Engineering school at Northeastern University in Boston and became the first in his family to attend and complete college. He was also one of the first graduates of the prestigious Co-op Engineering Program at NU and landed a position with General Electric upon graduation. He had a very successful 35 year career with GE; ending with positions as Manager of Manufacturing in Schenectady, NY and Plant Manager in Portland, Maine. His greatest success with GE; however, came when he met the love of his life Alexandra who worked with him at the GE plant in Philadelphia, PA. After retirement, he was on loan from GE to the State of NY Corrections as a manufacturing consultant where he was instrumental in having the department turn a profit for the first time. Later he was appointed Commissioner of Corrections.

Henry was an excellent athlete and enjoyed sports throughout his life. He was a prolific “knuckleball” pitcher as a youth in the Cape Cod baseball league. At GE; he was a cagey paddleball opponent for anyone willing to take him on. Henry became involved in

OBITUARIES the harness horse racing business starting in the 1960’s. He and wife Sandy enjoyed this together for over 40 years and travelled throughout the northeast following their “stable.” He and Sandy were active in all aspects of the sport they loved.

Over the years Henry owned, bred, trained, and drove Standardbred horses. Henry thoroughly enjoyed the characters and camaraderie of the horse business and made many friends; most importantly his longtime trainer Sean Campbell and wife Carolyn.

Henry had many interests which included boating, gardening, travel, and his family. He and Sandy were also diehard Boston Red Sox fans.

They often stayed up together to the wee hours watching the game and rooting for the desired outcome. The tone of the next day sometime hinged on how the Sox fared the night before!

Henry is survived by his wife of 52 years and true soulmate Alexandra who supported him through difficult times until his passing. He is also survived by his daughter Cheryl and three sons; Robley, Henry, Jr., (wife Patricia), and Peter (wife Becky). He also leaves two grandsons Jacob and Kyle (wife Tuanny), a granddaughter Stephanie (partner Jose) and a great grandson Dylan. In addition, Henry leaves numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral services were held for Henry on Monday, May 3, 2021at Christ The Savior Orthodox Church, Ballston Lake, NY. Visitation took place the following day at Wareham Village Funeral Home, Wareham, MA. Burial took place in Agawam Cemetery.

Donald P. Carter

He was born on August 7, 1937 in Wilton, the son of the late Thomas Carter and Ruth Hammond Carter.

Donald was a plumber for the Steamfitter Local 1000 and worked at the Saratoga Spa State Park for 36 years. He also served in the US Army during the Cold War. He was an avid outdoorsman and jack of all trades, enjoying fishing, hunting, and hanging out with his friends at the local coffee shop.

Donald is survived by his daughters, Donna Mills (Richard), Deanna Meyer (John), grandchildren, Adam Meyer, Elaina Meyer, and large extended family. Also, many friends who will miss him dearly as well.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine Lynch Carter; brothers, Richard, Gerald, James; sisters, Linda Dahlman and Nancy Austro.

A private graveside service was held on Monday, April 5, 2021 at North Milton Cemetery, Saratoga Springs.

Diane had a special gift of seeing and using color and design, whether it be in her fabulous gardens, a room in your house, or even an outfit. She believed it was best to be up and going and to accomplish something each and every day.

Diane worked for AT&T in NYC until she started her family. She was a wonderful mother and care giver to her four children, dedicating much of her focus on them as well as her whole family’s well-being.

Diane and Ed moved from NJ to Stamford, NY where they lived for 15 years before moving to Aurora, NY in 1985. They moved to Saratoga Springs in 2001 and made this community a part of their life.

Diane was active in the St Clement’s parish as a Eucharistic Minister and visiting those who were hospitalized. She enjoyed meeting new people and playing Mahjong and other games with friends. She wintered in The Villages, FL where she was very active and social with many friends.

Diane is survived by her four children Cathy (Elliott) Masie, AnneMarie (Mike) Hotaling and Eric DiMiceli, all from Saratoga Springs, Brian (Lisa) DiMiceli of

Manlius, NY; her grandchildren Thomas and Alison DiMiceli; step-grandsons Jared and Eric Hotaling; and her brother Bob (Barbara) Slivinsky of Livingston, NJ; brother-in-law Jack Celentano as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Diane will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Her family would like to thank The Wesley Community and the staff of 5 Springs and Hospice for caring for her and keeping her safe over the last year.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Diane M. DiMiceli of Saratoga Springs died peacefully on May 9, 2021 at the age of 81. She was the first child of the late William and Catherine Slivinsky, born on August 2, 1939 in Hackensack, NJ. Diane met the love of her life A. Edward DiMiceli Jr. (Eddie) in high school. They married in 1963 and enjoyed 44 years together before Ed passed in 2007. They loved traveling, going to the beach, golfing, gardening, and bike riding.

Anyone who knew Diane knows that she was always busy with a project and was not one to sit still.

COURT Justin D. Allen, 32, of Schenectady, pleaded April 30 to criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fourth-degree, a felony, in connection with an incident in Wilton. Sentencing June 22.

POLICE Joshua John, 25, of Latham was charged May 7 in Saratoga Springs with felony burglary, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, misdemeanor DWI and aggravated DWI, and operating an unregistered vehicle, after the Saratoga Springs Police Department responded to a reported burglary in-progress call on Broadway near Caroline Street.

The caller reported that an unknown man began climbing into her apartment through an open living room window just prior to her 911 call, according to police. The male subsequently exited the window and fled on foot. After receiving a description provided by the victim, officers located John, who was allegedly behind the wheel of a 2010 Toyota Camry at the intersection of Broadway

and Division. Based on further investigation, police said John was charged with the burglary offense as well as the listed DWI/traffic charges.

Scott R. Solomon, age 35, of Cohoes, was charged May 7 in Saratoga Springs with two felony counts each Offering a False Instrument for Filing, and Possession of a Forged Instrument, in addition to two felony counts of forgery.

The charges relate to an August 2020 investigation regarding concerns with paperwork Solomon filed with the city of Saratoga Springs on behalf of Siro’s Restaurant that consisted of insurance paperwork and a NYS Liquor License, according to police. It is alleged both documents were fraudulent, and Solomon is suspected of being aware of that fact when he filed them with the city.

Heather Gonzalez, 23, of Cohoes, was charged May 22 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and failure to keep to the right.

Derek Disanto, 19, of Albany, was charged May 2 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, failure to keep to the right, and driving a vehicle with unsafe tires.

Christopher Barnes, 41, of Wilton, was charged April 27 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, refusal to take a breath test, aggravated unlicensed operation, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and moving from lane unsafely.

Code Design, 26, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 27 with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, speeding, and operating motor vehicle without signal devices/reflectors.

Theodore Korenowski, 25, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 28 with criminal trespass, a misdemeanor.

Patrick McGowin, 36, of Ballston Spa, was charged April 30 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI. Anthony Argento, 30, of New York, was charged April 28 in Saratoga Springs with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, and failure to keep right.

Dominic Poggoli, 22, of Rensselaer, was charged April 24 in Saratoga Springs with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation.

Shayne Richardson, 28, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 25

with criminal possession of a controlled substance, and a vehicle equipment violation.

Patrick Crandall, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged April 26 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, registration suspended, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

Christopher M. Greklek, 53, of Halfmoon, was charged May 4 with grand larceny in the thirddegree, a felony, after allegedly stealing merchandise and receiving unauthorized product mark-downs in the amount of $24,303.68 between January and March 2021 at the Home Depot Store on Crossings Boulevard in Halfmoon.

Khalil Hankins, 26, of Colonie, and Ava Maddalla, 20, of Schenectady, were each charged April 15 with one count burglary, attempted grand larceny, and criminal possession of stolen property after the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office received a complaint from a hotel located in the town of Malta regarding activity of two guests of the facility. The investigation revealed that Hankins and Maddalla allegedly disregarded signage and barriers that closed

a section of the hotel for renovations, entered the area and proceeded to steal construction equipment and supplies. They are also accused of attempting to steal a pickup truck belonging to an employee of the hotel.

Renea E. Savona, 54, of Ballston Lake, was charged April 26 with grand larceny, and two counts forgery. She is accused of stealing approximately $27,437 and forged numerous checks between October 2020 and January 2021, while employed as the bank manager of KeyBank located at 525 Vischer Ferry Rd in the Town of Clifton Park.

Patrick Disbrow, 38, of Schuylerville, Tony Prichard, 32, of Hudson Falls, Joshua Ferrucci, 28, of Ballston Spa, William Robison, 23, of Greenwich, and Nicholas Warner, 21, of Clifton Park were all charged with 3 counts each of burglary in the thirddegree. They are accused of acting together to take property from storage units in the Town of Wilton. A car was allegedly among the stolen items from inside one of the units and was subsequently driven from the scene, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department.

In honor of Memorial Day, the Saratoga County Alliance to End Homelessness would like to spotlight the tireless efforts of local service provider, Veterans & Community Housing Coalition (VCHC), to support our Veteran community members in need.

Since 1983, VCHC has served homeless or at-risk Veterans in Saratoga County. In 2013, VCHC was awarded the Supportive

Services for Veteran Families grant which allowed VCHC to expand to six other local counties. Now, VCHC serves Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Fulton, Montgomery, Warren, and Washington counties. In 2016, VCHC recognized a lack of affordable decent housing for Veterans in Saratoga County.

In response VCHC, along with funding from HUD, formed the Saratoga Veterans Apartment

Program (SVAP). This program now provides 17 apartments scattered throughout Saratoga County for low income, disabled veterans and their families.

Over the past year, Veterans & Community Housing Coalition has established a food pantry for the local community, served over 250 individuals and Veteran families with housing stability resources, as well as assisted over 25 homeless

Veterans with emergency housing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

VCHC offers transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, support services for veteran families, and affordable apartments for eligible veterans and their families. ‘Losing Ground’ Virtual Discussion May 23 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Jewish Community Arts and Temple Sinai present a Zoom discussion of the film, “Losing Ground” at 7 p.m. on May 23.

Kathleen Collins’ film Losing Ground, a 1982 independent

romantic drama of an imploding marriage of two intellectuals, a university professor and her artist husband, struggled to find distribution at the time of its conception.

And even though it made history as one of the first feature films

written and directed by a Black woman, Losing Ground remained largely unseen by the time Collins died of breast cancer in 1988, at the age of 46. Collins shattered artistic barriers, but her work remained in obscurity for nearly 40 years.

UU Saratoga’s Tenth Annual Plant Sale Set for May 22 and 23 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs will host its Tenth Annual Plant Fair on Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23, the weekend before Memorial Day. Taking place in the church’s parking lot at 624 Broadway, the sale will offer a wide variety of tomatoes, herbs, and greens grown organically from seeds and cuttings.

“We’ll also offer exceptional perennials from splittings grown in Saratoga,” said accomplished gardeners Elisabeth Collins and Linda Miner. “Since they’re local,

we know they’ll do well here.”

Purchases may be made Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 3 p.m. Masks and social distancing will be required.

All sales will be cash and check only.

Free tree seedlings will be given to the first 50 attendees on Saturday. As in past years, this year’s sale is a group effort with dozens of UU Saratoga volunteers pitching in. Seedlings are being cultivated by church members Murray Penney and Art and Julie Holmberg.

Sustainable Saratoga’s Team Up to Clean Up: Over 100 Volunteers, Appx 200 Bags of Litter Picked Up SARATOGA SPRINGS — Over 100 volunteers teamed up for Sustainable Saratoga’s first ever Team Up to Clean Up community litter pick-up event on April 24-25.

An estimated 200 bags filled with trash were removed from neighborhoods, roadsides, parks, ravines and commercial areas. Several large teams participated in the event, including the Saratoga Lions Club, Ballston Spa Mentoring and the Saratoga Interlaken Garden Club. There was even an international team that joined the effort from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

“The enthusiasm for this first clean up event has been overwhelming,” explained Sustainable Saratoga’s Executive Director, Wendy Mahaney. “Our local communities, including teams from Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa, Wilton and Greenfield, have a strong sense of stewardship and pride towards the environment.

This event gave people an opportunity to take meaningful action to help keep litter, specifically microplastics, out of our waterways, soil, air and wildlife.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congressman Paul Tonko announced this week that the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program has officially launched, and he is encouraging constituents to check if they are eligible to receive a discount on their monthly internet bill through the program.

The new Emergency Broadband Benefit Program will help millions of lower-income Americans afford their monthly internet bill. Congress created the $3.2 billion program as part of the last omnibus appropriations bill in December.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) confirmed that open enrollment in the program began May 12. This broadband safety net program will provide between $50 and $75 off the monthly cost of home internet service for families in need, and may also provide an additional subsidy for a computer.

Internet providers who participate in the program can apply to the FCC for reimbursement.

According to the FCC, a household is eligible if a member of the household meets one of the following criteria below: Has an income that is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or participates in certain assistance programs, such as SNAP, Medicaid, or Lifeline; Approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision in the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school year; Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year; Experienced a substantial loss of income due to job loss or furlough since February 29, 2020 and the household had a total income in 2020 at or below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers; or Meets

the eligibility criteria for a participating provider's existing lowincome or COVID-19 program.

“With more of us working, learning and connecting with friends and loved ones remotely than ever before, every American family needs to be able to access reliable, affordable broadband internet. That’s why I have worked for years to improve and expand internet access, including writing and delivering my Access Broadband Act into law and helping lead the charge to create this new and vital broadband link in America’s safety net,” said Tonko, a Democrat whose district includes a large portion of Saratoga Springs.

SARATOGA — On May 12, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik sent a letter to her Republican colleagues asking for their vote in Stefanik’s bid for House Republican Conference Chair.

Republicans voted to remove Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming from that leadership post earlier the same day - the ejection ranked as punishment for repudiating former U.S. President Donald Trump’s false claims of a stolen election, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Stefanik voted in line with former President Donald Trump’s position 77.7% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight, which tracks how often every member of the House and the Senate votes

with or against the president.

“It is imperative that we not only go on offense against the Socialist Democrats, but we need to be on offense when dealing with the biased mainstream media,” Stefanik wrote in her Letter to Colleagues, as being among her goals as potential Conference Chair. She also noted spotlighting members’ conservative policy solutions and providing a disciplined message to “offensively prosecute the disastrous and destructive Biden and Pelosi agenda.”

The House Republican Conference chair is the thirdranking House Republican, behind Minority Leader Kevin

McCarthy, and Minority Whip Steve Scalise. By description, the House Republican Conference is the organizational vehicle for all Republican members of the house and their staff, hosts regular meetings of house Republicans and is the primary vehicle for communicating the party’s message to members. The Republican Conference Chairman directs day-to-day operations of the Conference office and staff.

Stefanik was first elected to the 21st Congressional District in 2014 and has been re-elected to the post in successive terms in 2016, 2018 and 2020. The 21st Congressional District includes a portion of Saratoga.

Providing Cover: New Roof for Local Veteran as Part of Roof Deployment Project

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A crew of workers descended this week upon the city’s east side, where U.S. Navy veteran Leslie Carroll received a new roof as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. The collaborative effort included Pinnacle Roofing, Glens Falls Habitat for Humanity, and Owens Corning.

“We appreciate what the veterans do for the country, so we like to help out and try to pay them back,” said Jeff Patrick, co-owner of Pinnacle Roofing, a Schenectadybased company that has been taking care of roofs for residential homes and commercial buildings in the Capital Region and Southern Vermont for over 15 years.

The project was established in 2016 by Owens Corning Roofing and its network of independent roofing Platinum Contractors to identify, honor and help protect veterans by installing new roofs. In its first year, 23 roofs were installed

for military families across 14 states.

To date, more than 250 military members have received new roofs.

Carroll was selected and approved as the recipient for the roof replacement. “This is our second one this year. We did one earlier this year in Corinth for another veteran up there, and we do several a year usually,” Patrick said.

A team of 10 worked to remove the existing roof as well as some plywood due to roof leakage.

The work was anticipated to be completed in less than two days.

Owens Corning – which develops, manufactures and markets insulation, roofing and fiberglass composites - runs the Roof Deployment Project. The company donated roofing materials and Pinnacle Roofing donating the labor. The Saratoga Springs project would have cost about $10,000 to $12,000, Patrick said.

Letters TO THE EDITOR Hello from Amanda Ellithorpe, BOE Candidate Hello fellow Saratogians. I’m running for the Board of Education on May 18 and want to take an opportunity to introduce myself.

I’ve been a resident of Saratoga Springs for over 10 years. A native of the Boston area, I’ve lived all over the country and was excited when I had the opportunity to relocate to Saratoga for work. I instantly fell in love with Saratoga’s unique combination of history, nature, and the arts and was grateful to settle here and start my family.

I’m a single mother and mompreneur. I have two young daughters who are enrolled at Caroline Street Elementary School. I’m a literacy advocate working with a children’s publisher on both a local and national level. Previously, I worked in the non-profit arts sector. I’ve been an active member of the Caroline Street PTA for three years and serve as a Girl Scout Troop Leader.

Raised by two educators, one of whom was a public school English teacher for over 30 years, I’ve always had a passion for education. However, after the past year, I feel even more committed to ensuring our community’s children have a safe and healthy environment in which to learn and that all students have equal access to educational opportunities. The events of 2020 shined a light on the importance of a healthy family unit, the unique and pivotal role our schools play in children’s lives on many levels, and the need for balanced conversations among parents, educators and administration.

Inequity Training: Coming to a Community Near YOU…

by Chad Beatty, Publisher of Saratoga TODAY "On April 22, a Saratoga Springs High School English teacher violated school protocol by allowing local leaders of Black Lives Matter to give a lecture to his class. This past weekend the district admitted that the teacher acted improperly."

While Americans were focused on the pandemic and economic recovery, a dangerous ‘woke’ movement quietly swept through education systems across America.

Under the guise of social justice, this relatively new theory (Critical Race Theory or CRT), is an academic movement of activists who seek to critically examine issues of race and to challenge traditional liberal approaches to racial justice. This ideology goes by several names, such as anti-racism, identity politics, and intersectionality, among others.

While this philosophy may sound good on the surface, a deeper dive into its history and practice exposes disturbing realities. ‘Anti-Racism’ appears to reject the lessons of the Civil Rights Movement. In doing so it suggests that society should judge everyone based on their inherent characteristics such as race, sex, and sexual identity rather than evaluating everyone on the content of their character. This flies in the face of Martin Luther King Jr’s dream that children “will one day live in a nation where they will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

Anti-racists are explicit about their views. They often say things

like; “All white people are born racist” and “All people of color are victims.” Doesn’t that paint a beautiful picture of humanity?

This is morally repugnant and completely unacceptable.

These “Woke” actors believe that concepts such as meritocracy, delayed gratification, and being on time are examples of “Whiteness,” and designed to oppress people of different ethnic backgrounds.

It positions everyone into one of two groups. Either you are an Oppressor, defined as White, Male, Straight and sometimes Asian, or you are Oppressed, defined as a person of color (Asians excluded), female and gay.

Americans have spent enormous amounts of time, money and blood breaking free from the chains of oppression, yet many CRT proponents claim racism has not improved? They claim racism is woven into the fabric of the nation and is “in the air we breathe.” If children are taught they are either oppressors or victims, what sort of future does that hold? I am a firm believer that people either rise, or fall, to the level of their expectations.

The good news is parents and concerned community members across the country are fighting back.

Last week two Saratoga Springs Board of Education Trustees began to ask questions about some of the language included in the district’s new Equity, Inclusivity and Diversity in Education policy. The policy guidance includes eleven items that the district and Board of Education must implement, and is built off a framework provided to the school by the New York State School Board Association and the Board of Regents.

Included in the eleven-point plan is a call to “Model AntiRacist Language and Action.”

What exactly does it mean to “Model Anti-Racist language and action?” Interestingly, when two Trustees began asking questions of fellow board members, no two members answered the question in the same way.

Language is very powerful, and words matter. I want to know exactly what is meant by “Model Anti-Racist Language and Action.” This is like building a nuclear weapons lab, but some people are using the metric system, some are using the imperial system, and some think they are building a coffee shop.

Ibram X. Kendi, author of the book, “How to Be An AntiRacist,” states: “The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination. The only remedy to present discrimination is future discrimination. The defining question is whether the discrimination is creating equity or inequity. If the discrimination is creating equity, then it’s antiracist (good). If discrimination is creating inequity, then it’s racist.”

Discrimination, defined by Anti-Racists, is any unequal outcome between groups.

So if a law firm is full of Asians and whites, and not blacks, that’s “racism” even if everybody was hired based solely on their qualifications and not their race.

Fundamentally the modern Anti-Racist movement is not against discrimination, it’s against

inequity, which in many cases makes it pro-discrimination!

As Mr. Kendi puts it, “When I see racial disparities, I see racism.”

Let’s take a look at the actual practice of ‘anti-racism;’ in education: Parents for Defending Education, a non-for-profit organization, has documented more than 200 instances of inappropriate curricula and lessons taught to students as young as five years old. Examples: • In California, 3rd graders in Cupertino were forced to deconstruct their racial identities, create identity maps and rank themselves according to their “power and privilege.”

• In Illinois, a Loyola Academy H.S. assignment asks students to apologize for the color of their skin.

• In Missouri, middle school teachers were forced to locate themselves on an “oppression matrix,” and watch a video of “George Floyd’s last words.”

• In NY, a Rockville Centre High School assignment asserts that police are the sixth leading cause of death for young Black men after cancer.

• In Rhode Island, the Moses Brown School unveiled a ‘Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’ plan with ‘concept of intersectionality;’ which segregates children by race.

• In Irvington NY, Union Free School district hosted a Zoom meeting with invitees from the NYU Metropolitan Center on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. During the event it was stated that “all white children are born racist” and that we all “have to undo our whiteness.”

• In NYC, a group of concerned parents sent an open letter to the Dalton Community regarding the school’s “anti-racism curriculum,” referencing classes with an “obsessive” focus on race and diversity, racist cop reenactments in science, de-centering whiteness in art class, learning about white supremacy and sexuality in health class, and wildly age-inappropriate issues.

Defenders of Anti-Racism in education will claim that these examples aren’t being “properly contextualized.” But I ask them, in what context is it acceptable to demand students apologize for the color of their skin or to teach them that “all white people are born racist,” or “all people of color are victims?”

Kudos to the two board members who had the courage to ask pertinent questions about this vaguely written policy. It’s certainly not easy for anyone these days to stand up and ask a simple question to the ‘woke’ mob. Doing so can get a person harassed, cancelled, and shunned from polite society.

Interestingly, nowhere in the model guidance from the Board of Regents or the NYSSBA is the phrase, “Model Anti-Racist Action and Language.” Why exactly is Saratoga Springs attempting to add it to the district policy?

The examples provided above may give Saratogians a glimpse into what the future of education may look like in the Saratoga Springs School District. Hopefulely they will give the Board of Education reason to pause, and carefully evaluate the policy language being debated this month.

I, along with Saratoga residents, overwhelming support more diversity and inclusion in the school system. However, reasonable people should be able to agree that the school district must erect appropriate safeguards to prevent the most extreme examples of Anti-Racist Action in education, especially those that promote discrimination, from becoming a reality in Saratoga Springs. Now is our opportunity to make a difference on this topic…

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: On Tuesday, May 18, residents will be asked to vote for their new school board members. I urge you all to take this ‘right’ seriously. Do your own research and understand the values and beliefs of the candidates. It wasn’t too long into the initial project – which included the main house and party deck before Dean found signs that this remodel was going to be a huge undertaking.

Dean tells me.

s we are in the midst of a global pandemic, health is a priority for everyone. People have been restricted to their homes and to limited outdoor activity – walking, running, or biking – individually or with those you live with. With its wide open spaces and beautiful architecture, the Saratoga Spa State Park is a perfect place to explore while doing one of those activities. So lace up your shoes or hop on your bike and come learn about the history and architecture of this National Historic Landmark!

To begin, it is important to learn about the development of the park. Spring waters have been important to Saratoga since they were first discovered by the Native Americans who considered them to have healing properties. The springs attracted many from near and far who believed in their medicinal benefits, making Saratoga Springs a popular resort destination. Thousands of visitors arrived each year to stroll, partake in the different spring waters, and stay at grand hotels on Broadway. However, the springs also attracted entrepreneurs seeking ways to make money.

1ST PLACE!

Entrepreneurs not only sold the water from the springs, but discovered that the carbon dioxide from the carbonated spring waters could be extracted and sold for soda fountains, which were gaining popularity. This resulted in many unsightly manufacturing complexes with deep well pumps extracting hundreds of thousands of gallons daily. Unfortunately, this caused a significant threat to the springs- what had made Saratoga so famous was nearly lost forever.

Depending on how ambitious you are, you could start on foot or bike, at the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, 297 Broadway, where in 1915 guests boarded a trolley at the Hudson Valley Railroad Station to go south to the Lincoln Bath building, 65 South Broadway. For those less ambitious, start at the Lincoln Bath building. Prior to the existing building, there was a wood-frame factory built to extract gas and adapted by the state for public bathing in 1915.

So many sought the medicinal benefits of the spring waters that five years later the adjacent Washington Bath House was constructed -now the National Museum of Dance, 99 South Broadway.

This building was designed by State Architect Lewis F. Pilcher in the popular Craftsman style. It was at the Washington Baths that for the first time in Saratoga an appointment system was used and higher fees were charged for patrons to enjoy semi-private to private rooms. Between the two bath houses, 2,500 clients were served daily.

The Washington Bath House features a stucco exterior with half-timbering detail and a slate roof and originally had a fountain in the lobby with Lincoln Spring Water.

Senator Edgar Brackett and Spencer Trask, a wealthy financier, formed a committee of local citizens to “protect and preserve the mineral springs of Saratoga for prosperity.” The committee was successful in passing the 1908 Anti-Pumping Act, which prevented the pumping of the water and extraction of gas. However, the gas companies ignored the law and New York State took ownership of the lands where the springs were located in order to protect them long term in 1909. In 1910, at a time when the use of bath houses was popular, the Saratoga Reservation Commission was formed to develop a health resort on state lands. Over time, the state acquired the land now known as the Saratoga Spa State Park.

here was a time along the Oklahoma Training Track when a goat named Bambi would stand in line with Thoroughbred owners, trainers, jockeys, and backstretch workers to order refreshments from a free-wheeling enterprise called Moe’s Coffee Coach.

Although the portable food and beverage venue that was founded half a century ago served its last Spa City customer in 2008, perky memories of the seasonal business where equine lovers could relax and renew far from the glamour and glitz of the grandstand remain. Ed O’Connor, who became “the face of Moe’s” after its late namesake Moe Dandeneau retired in 1991, fondly

Among their favorite “characters” was a cash-toting goat named Bambi who loved munching on potato chips. “The barn workers would tuck a dollar bill in Bambi’s collar, and she would come to the truck for a bag of chips. We also served horses, some of them retired Thoroughbreds, who would come up to the window, stick their heads inside and wait for a donut. And, of course, lots of four-legged, tail wagging dogs would ‘order’ hot dogs or hard-boiled eggs or pieces of cheese,” laughs Teri.

34 PHILA STREET The Southwest corner of Phila and Putnam Streets has long been a corner for connections in Saratoga Springs.

People today know this location as Ben & Jerry’s, a business that has thrived there for 37 years. But if we look back in time, 34 Phila Street has always been a unique spot for people to linger.

One hundred years ago, no permanent structure existed on this parcel of land.

In the 1930s this undeveloped land in the heart of the low lying Jewish enclave was owned by Sunny Brook Creamery, headquartered at 48 Caroline Street. For a few weeks each summer, world famous strongman Joe Greenstein sold hair tonic on this corner. “Known as The Mighty Atom, he parked his great long station wagon in the lot, lifted weights, and towed a car with his thickly braided hair to demonstrate the efficacy of his special hair tonic,“ shares writer Amy Godine.

The gas station switched to a Mobil Service station in the mid-60s. In 1968, race car enthusiast Jerry Rose started running Rose’s Gas Station. The bayed area of the station provided a place to work on his race cars and the front corner of the station provided the perfect spot for Jerry’s car enthusiast friends to gather for Saturday morning coffee. Daughter Stacey often visited her dad at work and fondly remembers how each neighboring business owner watched out for each other. “The Goldsmiths, Mrs. Walzeck at the Golden Grill and the Londons at Mrs. London’s were like a little family to us,” Stacey said. Gas sales generate little income for a service station-roughly a penny a gallon- and pumps were not self-pumping.

Every time a customer wanted gas, an attendant fixing a car had to stop and pump the gas. This was particularly challenging during the gas crisis of 1973.

“Our generation was not used to not being able to get what they wanted,” states Jerry’s wife Kathe Rose. “During the gas crisis you could only get gas on odd or even days based on the last number of your license plate. In the morning there would be 20 cars already in line waiting for gas. The pumps were busy all day till the gas ran out.”

In 1996, after bonding together during Ben & Jerry’s sponsored Little League games, Patrick Pipino and Carol & Dave Godette purchased the ice cream franchise at 34 Phila.

The challenges of having an ice cream store in a gas station parking lot were apparent. The hot, sticky blacktop; a lack of shade; and a large dumpster abutting the store did not create the ambiance for customers to stay and interact for any length of time. The blacktop was replaced with pavers, three large birch trees were planted, a large lit gazebo was constructed, a photo op pint lid was added, and the garbage was moved.

The stage was set to further grow the “corner of connections.”

From Chowder Fest, to Free Cone Day, the Fourth of July Fireworks, and the Victorian Street Walk, everyone visiting Saratoga eventually makes their way to this corner.

Pipino as manager and operating partner significantly increased the store’s sales and was instrumental in earning the store “Franchise of the Year” in 2002 and 2015.

The location spreads “peace and love” well beyond the immediate neighborhood, donating an average of $70,000 back to the community each year.

In the 24 years since Pipino and the Godettes took over the operation,”The Valley” has seen a lot of change- the 1999 moving of Hathorn #1 Spring to the southeast corner of Putnam; the 1999 construction of a city parking garage; and the 2002 opening of the carousel in Congress Park- all helping to secure 34 Phila Street’s place in the heart of Saratogians. An 1824 image would show the first United States Hotel, a four-story structure built to accommodate rich mercantile patrons visiting Saratoga for our famous waters. A devastating fire in June of 1865 burnt it to the ground.

For the next seven years our camera would show a vacant lot.

1873- 1946 REBUILT UNITED STATES HOTEL For nearly 70 years a massive structure would fill the frame of the camera- a second & grander United States Hotel.

In the age of opulence after the Civil War, grand hotels became the epicenter of social life for the rich. In this heyday of grand hotels, a rebuilt United States Hotel opened on June 1874.

Millionaires gathered on the broad piazza to discuss secret business dealings of the day. The hotel flourished for nearly 70 years. World War 2 took its toll on America and the United States Hotel was one of its causalities. Destruction of the building began in May 1945 and was completed in March of 1946.

For several years after 1946 our camera would show a nearly vacant space with a small concrete block building that housed a bar.

Mid-1900’s time lapse images would show polar opposite structures-one of the grandest hotels in the world, then a barn styled restaurant, complete with neon sign.

Saratoga as a whole, and in particular, its buildings, are a true reflection of the culture, traditions and lifestyles of our society. Each structure at 395 Broadway represents our country’s cultural trends.

In 1983, Congress Gas and Oil gave Jerry the right of refusal to buy the property. Jerry was ready for new challenges and turned the opportunity down.

As luck would have it, two brothers, James and Jeff Durstewitz, were looking to open an ice cream store in a renovated gas station. Jeff Durstewitz, childhood friend of Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, opened the fourth ever Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop in the converted station on July 1, 1983. After all, Ben & Jerry’s original shop in a Burlington, Vermont Mobil Station worked for them. For the first two years of operation, the ice cream shop shared the space with Montana Books.

In 1955 Mrs. Tanenbaum sold the parcel of land to Congress Gas and Oil “on the condition that for fifteen years no part of the premises shall be used for the sale of groceries or food products.” Initially it was a Flying A service station. Lucy Cadou Kettlewell loved the flying A logo and accurately captured it in her paintings on the area of Putnam and Phila, reports daughter Chloe Kettlewell.

1983- PRESENT: PEACE, LOVE AND ICE CREAM

Regina Tanenbaum, co-owner of Tanenbaum’s Grocery Store (across the street at 37 Phila St.) purchased 34 Phila Street from Sunny Brook Creamery in 1946. Tanenbaum’s grocery store was central in the Jewish community. The large presence of summer Jewish residents requiring kosher products led to a demand that exceeded the space of their store. A seasonal solution was to build a stand across the street in the empty lot at 34 Phila Street. Jay Tanenbaum and his father Leo drove their 1932 Buddy Stewart pickup truck to Menands every morning at 4 a.m. to purchase the finest wholesale fruits available to sell at their 35 ft. by 25 ft. covered, greenwood stand. Racetrack customers such as the Whitneys purchased cherries, Knight’s Bros. apples and fine melons 7 days a week.

John Bevan’s map (circa 1850) locates 308 Nelson on part of Saratoga’s first cemetery. Originally named the Sadler Cemetery after the land’s donor Seth Sadler, it was also referred to as “First Cemetery”, “Peter’s Cemetery” and in the 1870’s as “Nelson Street Cemetery.” Former long time city Mayor Addison Mallery wrote to our city historian describing ‘Peter’s Cemetery’. He said, “When I was a youngster we played on what was known as Peter’s Cemetery. It halfway down the hill on Nelson Avenue. Occasionally we would find a bone.” The property bordered land owned by J. I venture to guess that if we could travel 100 years into the future, today’s city wouldn’t resemble “our Saratoga.”

A natural starting point is the focal point of today’s downtown, the iconic Adirondack Trust Company at 473 Broadway. So much has been written about this community bank-most notably Field Horne’s comprehensive “With the Strength of the Adirondacks: A History of

the Adirondack Trust Company 19012001"-that it is challenging to shed new light on the subject. However, many lesser known facts about 473 (aka 471) Broadway abound!

PRESENT DAY-1917 ADIRONDACK TRUST COMPANY “Visitors say it is the handsomest bank building in the State,” states The Architectural & Building Press in a 1917 piece. Today’s locals agree, especially during December when holiday lights and greenery accentuate the building’s best features.

Surprisingly, this Saratoga institution has graced the corner of Broadway and Church Street in its current form for only a little over 100 years, opening on

January 2, 1917. NYC architect Alfred Hopkins was one of nine men to submit building plans for the bank. Hopkins’ reputation for creating secure structures came from well-known prison designs.

Additionally, he was a native-born Saratogian. The bank board couldn’t have made a better choice.

Attention to detail prevailed both inside and out. The bookend-matched white marble exterior and the bronzed-relief front doors depicting woodland scenes caught customers’ attention as they were about to enter the spacious foyer.

Today, eyes are immediately drawn to the decorative chandeliers that are quite different from the way they looked in 1984 when Charles V. Wait took over for his dad, Newman “Pete” Wait. saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

out the Springs,” often quipped lifelong Saratogian Minnie Bolster about her beloved hometown. Minnie always stressed the importance of water shaping Saratoga Springs into the beautiful city we treasure today.

Water played the lead role in obvious and not so obvious aspects of the evolving landscape of 262-268 Broadway. “This entire area is loaded with both mineral and pure springs,” reports Charles Kuenzel, president of the Saratoga Springs History Museum.

The curative powers of our springs drew tourists “to take the cure” and led to the development of world-class hotels such as The United States Hotel, which became headquarters for political conventions of the 1800s. Soon the demand for large convention sites surpassed the capacity of these hotels. This led to the 1892 construction of a convention hall described below in the August 11, 1893 issue of The Baltimore Sun :

Building For Sale; Children’s Museum to Relocate to Lincoln Bathhouse

SARATOGA SPRINGS — After a 20-year-run on Caroline Street, the Children’s Museum at Saratoga will relocate to the Lincoln Bathhouse.

“We moved here 20 years ago and have invested a lot of time and effort into maintaining the structure, so it’s a really well-taken-careof building. We’re hoping to be able to use whatever monies comes from the proceeds of the sale to be reinvested in this next project,” said Sarah Smith, executive director at the Children’s Museum at Saratoga.

The current building is located at 69 Caroline Street.

Roohan Realty lists the 8,615 square-foot building and 25-vehicle adjacent parking lot as for sale at $2.25 million.

The new location will be situated on two floors in the rear of the Lincoln Bathhouse.

“We estimate construction will begin in August. We signed on with Bonacio Construction to do the work and right now our architect is finalizing the drawings,” Smith said. “It should take about one year so we’re hoping to open in May 2022.”

The current museum location will remain open. Should the building be sold prior to the construction of the museum’s new location, programs may temporarily be held at local venues where partnerships have already been arranged, she said.

Dr. Gayle Buckley Retiring and Closing Practice After 40 Years

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dr. Gayle Buckley has announced her retirement and the closing of her practice, Hudson Mohawk Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, LLC. Hudson Mohawk Pediatrics in Ballston Lake opened its doors in 1981, and will officially close its doors on June 1. The practice served children and adolescents from birth to 22 years of age, and had patients from approximately 1,500 families at the time of closing.

Dr. Melissa Ungeheuer will be moving to Four Seasons Pediatrics and James Anderson PA will be moving to Glens Falls Pediatrics and Pediatric Associates of Saratoga.

Dr. Buckley became board certified in 1972. She did her residency training in adult medicine, but made the switch to pediatrics because she believed she would have a greater positive impact in that branch of medicine instead.

Before opening her own practice, she worked for the State of New York Maternal and Child Health Bureau, college and school health, and pediatrics at Four Winds.

When Dr. Buckley began her career, pediatricians did everything – physical and mental health. With the development of pediatric specialists, she has seen the role of a pediatrician evolve to treat more behavioral and mental health needs. She started her own practice because she felt that was

the way that she could make the most impact on families. She says that pediatrics is all about prevention, and the key is to constantly be learning to meet the needs of your families.

“Watching these kids grow up and go out the door is satisfying,” said Dr. Buckley.

In retirement, she plans to visit her daughter, who she hasn’t been able to see in a year due to COVID, and to also get her master’s degree in public health.

Saratoga Arts Welcomes Three New Members to Board SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jeffery Altamari, Maureen Parker and Elizabeth Sobel have been named to Saratoga Arts Board of Directors.

Jeff Altamari is retired from a career in Houston, TX as a financial officer for a global oil and gas company. Previously he was employed by two multinational manufacturers as well as an international CPA firm. He has extensive experience in finance, accounting, and compliance. Since his retirement in 2015, he has served on the boards of local arts and public service organizations as well as the 2017 Saratoga Springs Charter Review Commission. He is a graduate of Cornell University.

Maureen Parker is the Charles Schwab Independent Branch Leader in Saratoga Springs and in 2019 she was presented with their Peer Excellence Award for

her support and mentorship of new Independent Branch leaders. Prior to beginning her career with Charles Schwab, Maureen obtained her advisor experience with other investment firms including Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Fidelity Investments.

Elizabeth Sobol is the President and CEO of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, formerly President and CEO of Universal Music Classics and Managing Director of IMG Artists in North/South America. During Sobol’s nearly three-decade tenure at IMG Artists, she nurtured the careers of some of the music world’s most respected artists, including Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, James Galway, Emerson String Quartet, Steve Reich, Evgeny Kissin, Hilary Hahn, Renee Fleming and Kiri Te Kanawa, among many others.

Saratoga Hospital Grows Midwifery Team SARATOGA SPRINGS — Certified Nurse Midwife Jessica Haag recently joined Saratoga Hospital Medical Group and Saratoga OB/GYN and Midwifery at Myrtle Street.

The growing practice uses a collaborative physician-midwife model of care that has proved to be the best approach for mothers and newborns. Studies show this collaborative model is linked to lower cesarean-section rates—an experience borne out at Saratoga Hospital, which has the lowest C-section rate in the Capital Region.

Haag spent most of her career in the Chicago area, as a midwife at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago and at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in nearby Hinsdale, Illinois. Skidmore Controversy Continues

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — YAL backs ADF’s decision to take legal action against Skidmore College after denying student Hannah Davis to form a chapter of the organization on campus earlier this spring.

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) sent a demand letter to Skidmore College last Friday (May 7), threatening litigation against the college if they do not immediately recognize Davis’s Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) chapter to assemble.

ADF’s Center for Academic Freedom is a legal team dedicated to protecting students’ freedoms of speech and association. YAL is the nation’s most active libertarian youth organization, with nearly 5,200 members at more than 400 colleges and universities across the country. In response to ADF taking legal action, YAL is officially speaking out in support of Davis and ADF. “It’s a shame that Skidmore

College has chosen to sacrifice the values of truth, civil discourse, and real tolerance in the name of social justice,” YAL’s Chief of Staff, Sean Themea, said in a statement.

“YAL stands with Hannah Davis, applauding this swift legal action from Alliance Defending Freedom to uphold her right to speak freely.”

ADF’s demand letter addresses Skidmore College President, Marc C. Conner, and begins as follows: “We represent Hannah Davis and Young Americans for Liberty, a student organization that seeks official recognition from your College…Your College promises every student robust freedom of speech and freedom to associate and form organizations on campus. But you have denied Ms. Davis the ability to form a YAL chapter because the student government labels YAL as a hate group. This is false and is quintessential viewpoint discrimination that violates Skidmore’s promises to its students. We urge you to rectify this decision immediately to avoid unnecessary litigation.”

The letter continues on, addressing how the college’s policies and promises to protect students’ First Amendment rights, as listed in the college’s Student Bill of Rights and the SGA Constitution have been violated.

The letter also details the hostility

that Davis has experienced from fellow peers. ADF states that by refusing to allow the chapter, the college is “engaging in deceptive trade practices and false advertising under the New York Consumer Protection Act.” Saratoga TODAY reached out

to Skidmore College for a comment. The college responded that, at this time, they do not have anything to share regarding the letter.

ADF has given the college a deadline of May 21, 2021 to allow Davis to form her student chapter before legal action is taken.

Saratoga Springs Schools Adopting New Policy SARATOGA SPRINGS — A Saratoga Springs High School teacher invited local BLM leaders to speak to his class, coinciding with a new “Anti-Racist” book being used in the school’s English curriculum and a new policy being adopted.

The English teacher allegedly violated district rules by having unapproved guest speakers talk to his class. The guest speakers, Chandler Hickenbottom and Lexis Figuereo, are leaders of the local Black Lives Matter organization “All of Us.” Their organization calls for the defunding and abolition of the local police department, and they

have been organizing protests around Saratoga Springs and the Capital District for the past year.

Their group was responsible for shutting down Broadway and harassing restaurant patrons in Saratoga Springs this past summer. Figuereo was arrested in Albany at the end of April for being a part of a group attempting to destroy the Albany South Police Station.

During a Board of Education meeting on April 29, it was announced that the Saratoga Springs City School District is using a new book in the ELA curriculum for grades 9-12. This book, titled “Letting Go of Literary

Whiteness, Antiracist Literature Instruction for White Students,” has sample lesson plans for teachers to introduce discussions on the topics of White Privilege and White Supremacy; the lessons are calling for “Alternative Voices” to be presented to the students.

At the same April 29 meeting, the Board of Education had their first reading of an Equity, Inclusivity, and Diversity in Education policy that they were looking to adopt. The policy was adopted at the May 11 meeting, and the administrative regulation was tabled so that it could be further discussed by the policy committee.

New Child Care Center to Serve Saratoga Race Course Backstretch Community SARATOGA SPRINGS — Faith’s House, the new childcare center at Saratoga Race Course, is set to begin serving families and children of the backstretch community in summer 2021.

Located on the Oklahoma side of the Saratoga backstretch, the 4,300-square-foot facility will provide childcare and early education programs for infants, toddlers and preschool-aged children. The center will be open seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accommodate the schedules of backstretch workers and horsemen.

Right Direction “MOTHERING BOYS”

I

was reading over my columns for the past few months, and was marveling at the fact that, while my January and February articles were pandemic-focused (like almost all of last year’s), I actually wrote about other things in March and April! I read an article recently that argued there wouldn’t be a “stop” to the pandemic — a particular day on which we’d all be free of this scourge — but that it would be a gradual process. Like, one day you’d realize that it’s been over, or in the process of being over, for a while. The fact that I found other things to write about for the last two months is, I think, one of those things — a part of the process of the pandemic ending in our part of the world.

In fact, my life these days is a definite mixture of Pandemic and Before Times (which I guess are technically After Times). My big boys played Fall sports in March and April, which was thrilling — watching them run Cross Country is one of my very favorite things.

They were all on the same team, which made my chauffeuring duties pretty easy, but now they’re playing baseball and they’re not on the same team, and each night as I drag myself to bed earlier than usual, I’m remembering how exhausting spring has always been with all the baseball teams and practices and games and who needs to be where when (usually at the exact same time that another boy has to be at his field across town). Since we didn’t do our normal spring stuff last year, I’d forgotten a little how intense it can be.

In February I wrote about how sorry I am that my youngest especially has missed out on seeing some of the people that have always been a part of my daily motherhood — our friends at the grocery stores and the Triangle Diner particularly — but since then, I’ve actually felt comfortable enough to bring him to the store with me a few times! And my mom and I are planning a diner date very soon.

At the same time that these marks of “normalcy” are back in our lives, though, the pandemic is clearly still with us. I can’t imagine that I’ll ever be able to remember without crying how it prevented one of my boys from running in the Cross Country League Championship. I know such a thing is small potatoes compared to the loss of life and other horrors of the last year both locally and globally, and my son himself has a better sense of perspective about the whole thing than I do, but the toll all this has taken on young people is heartbreaking to me. I had to buy new masks recently, as the slow losing of them in backpacks and in the wash finally caught up with us. I was really hoping that the last bunch I bought was, in fact, the last — that the end of masking would come before I had to buy more — but no. The fact that it’s spring allergy season and allergy symptoms are similar to COVID

symptoms adds an interesting layer of nervousness to daily life. And the hold this horrible virus currently has in India is a stark reminder that the pandemic is not over and that suffering and death continue.

I heard on the radio recently some tips about easing back into normal life, because some people are experiencing anxiety now that things are opening back up. I saw that some (many?) vaccination sites are no longer requiring appointments — you can just show up. I was able to attend my boys’ Cross Country meets in large part because my husband was still working from home so I could leave some of the kids with him, but now he’s back to work at the office so attending the baseball games isn’t as easy. I check the COVID stats for Saratoga County every morning and have been watching the number of positive cases decrease and plateau and decrease again since the peak back in the winter. This time is such a mix of good news and bad news, cautious optimism and frustrating setbacks, things getting easier and things getting harder, but it all seems to be heading in the right direction.

A history professor I know said that he recommends reading diaries and journals from times of plague and epidemics to see how it affected the daily life of regular people — I think of this column that way, both Before, when it was a record of motherhood in Saratoga Springs in the first part of the twenty-first century, and now, when it’s a record of motherhood in Saratoga Springs during the COVID pandemic. I imagine one day someone will read this account of life here, now, and have hope that time marches on and bad things eventually end.

Becoming The Parent You Needed Having just celebrated Mother’s Day this past weekend many individuals can feel a mix of dread, sadness, regret and pain. Mother’s Day can trigger a traumatic pain response if you have/had a difficult, complex relationship with your Mother.

Our first introduction into the world comes through our Mothers. Whether we feel safe, secure and valued starts the minute we are born as early attachment forms. If this attachment is not formed in a healthy way, we can spend our adult lives trying to heal from something that feels incurable.

As we grow into adolescence and adulthood, the inner voice that we develop that governs how we think and feel models the voice of the parent we had the most conflict with. If you had an overly critical, difficult to please Mother or Mother figure in your life, the inner voice you have will model that criticism and judgement to yourself and everyone around you.

The only way to heal from the inside out and move past poor parent attachment is to become the parent you wanted and needed. For example, if every Mother’s Day you try to please your difficult Mother by sending cards, spending time with her, visiting her home and then feeling a giant emotional hangover from your time together, it’s time to let the healthy parent step in and offer some guidance and support.

This starts by becoming the parent you needed as a young child. For example, instead of spending another holiday trying to please your difficult parent, you stop and pause. How would I protect my younger self in this situation? You have to begin to work on forming a healthy bond and attachment with your spirit, heart and soul and begin to set the boundaries you didn’t have as a child.

When I work with individuals who have complicated relationships with their mother, the question I get the most is, “Isn’t that so mean, I mean this person is my mother, don’t I owe her?”

No doubt guilt can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate; however, when you abandon yourself to please a difficult parent,

you continue the cycle of dysfunction and pass the baton down to the next generation.

The most wonderful, healthy gift you can give yourself every single day when the sun comes up is to be the parent you wanted and needed. This means taking care of yourself in the small basic ways, healthy food, water, rest. It also means taking care of yourself in the more emotionally complex ways as well. You would never want your child around a dysfunctional person so why continue to put yourself in toxic situations at the hopes of pleasing an impossible to please person?

The key to healing is to start with you. Don’t spend another Mother’s Day feeling guilty, stressed out, angry. Stop the cycle today and start to be the Mother you wanted and needed yourself TODAY and EVERY DAY.

Understanding Risk In Your Investments “IN ORDER TO MANAGE RISK, WE MUST FIRST UNDERSTAND RISK....

WHAT MAKES IT SO RISKY?” This is a classic line from an episode of Seinfeld that was on last week. George had to give a presentation about risk management, a subject about which he knew nothing. I was reminded that risk is something most people either misunderstand, or don’t completely understand, so I think a quick refresher is in order.

When people think of risk within their portfolio they typically only think of equity risk; that is the risk that the value of their stock investments will decline.

While equity risk is an important factor to consider, there are several other types of risk inherent to your portfolio that you may not be as familiar with, and which can be just as impactful as equity risk.

In order to counter equity risk, many people will invest a portion of their portfolio in bonds. While this can help smooth out the volatility of their portfolio, bonds are not without risk themselves. Not the least of these risks is interest rate risk. This is the risk that interest rates will rise, which can force the value of bonds to decline. With interest rates at or near record lows, interest rate risk should be a major consideration when constructing your portfolio.

Let’s say you’re a bank, and for the last year you’ve been writing mortgages at 3%. Many banks will sell their mortgages to other banks. If interest rates increase to 5%, how likely will you be to find a buyer for your 3% mortgages? It will be difficult, and you’ll probably need to lower your price to entice a buyer and compensate for the rate difference. The same thing can happen with many of the bonds in your portfolio.

There is a fallacy out there that bonds are “safer” than other investment vehicles, and that a person’s portfolio should drastically shift toward bonds upon retirement. As an industry, financial professionals have not done a good enough job of combatting this line of thinking.

One reason this is untrue is another type of risk: concentration risk. This type of risk occurs when a portfolio is tipped too heavily to one type of investment and is a result of having too many correlated investments. Stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate, etc., behave differently under different conditions; they are uncorrelated. When you have too

much concentration in just one type of investment, they can all move in the same direction at the same time. This includes down!

Inflation risk and longevity risk go hand-in-hand.

Inflation risk is the risk that your assets aren’t growing enough to outpace inflation. I’ve met many people invested primarily in CDs, who think their money is safe. In truth, because of inflation risk, they are simply losing money safely. Mitigating inflation risk to help ensure your assets maintain purchasing power is an important consideration in constructing and managing your portfolio.

Longevity risk is simply the risk that you will exhaust your assets before you die. The key to defeating longevity risk is in understanding how hard your assets must work in order to help ensure you are able to maintain your standard of living. Once you have determined how aggressively you must be invested, you can arrive at an investment mix which is appropriate. If you undergo a formal analysis to help make this determination, you may find that you are actually more aggressive than you need to be.

Managing risk is a trade-off. For example, in order to minimize inflation and longevity risk, you may need to subject yourself to more equity risk.

Once you have a better understanding of the various types of risk affecting your portfolio, you will start to view your investments in a different way. You’ll suddenly realize that a 100% bond portfolio can be very risky, when you account for interest rate, longevity, inflation, and concentration risks. In fact, a 100% bond portfolio can have more total risk than a portfolio consisting of 60% stocks and 40% bonds!

Work closely with your Certified Financial Planner professional to better understand the types of risk you are facing, and how best to manage them. Together you can devise a plan that’s sensitive to your unique circumstances.

pring is finally bringing warmer weather and with it an abundance of muchanticipated seasonal produce to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. Greens, in many forms, including perennials, hearty cold-weather crops, and greenhouse-grown, have been catching our eye, and we invite you to try some fresh new flavors of the season.

Several farms at the Wednesday and Saturday farmers’ markets offer varieties of greens. This includes red romaine, baby spinach, radicchio, green romaine, red leaf, arugula, mustard greens, red chard, and tatsoi. These greens offer distinct fresh flavors and textures, and they are high in nutritional value, too. Depending on the green, some may be cooked, wilted, or enjoyed fresh as a salad.

Vibrant sunflower and sweet pea shoots are available at Leaning Birch Farm on Saturdays. Pea shoots have the sweet, grassy flavor of snap peas with a refreshing crunch, and sunflower shoots have a nutty taste with a similar crisp bite. According to Nic Fera of Leaning Birch Farm, both are a year-round crop for their farm. “They are great to add a little fresh accent to dishes,” says Fera.

Capital Greens NY brings varieties of microgreens to the Saturday farmers’ market, including the mixes like their Signature Gourmet, Thai Basil, and Gourmet Fiesta. Microgreens are young vegetable greens packed with nutrients and are easy to incorporate into many dishes or used as a garnish. Try them on sandwiches, in salads, on pizza, or blend them into a smoothie.

If you’re a fan of fiddleheads, stop by Ramble Creek Farm this month while they’re in season. Fiddleheads are young shoots that grow from the ostrich fern, and with a very narrow harvest season, you can only enjoy these shoots in the early spring from around late April to early June. flavor reminiscent of asparagus, fiddleheads may be steamed, braised, or sauteed, as they contain a trace amount of a toxin and cannot be consumed raw.

• 14 ounces pasta* (use tagliatelle, fettuccini, or your favorite pasta)

• 1 cup asparagus*, rinse, cut off woody ends, cut into 1 ½ inch pieces

• 2 cups fiddleheads* (in cold water, rinse and remove the brown papery husk on the fiddleheads, do this several times)

• Juice from one lemon, zest from half the lemon

• 1 ½ Tablespoons olive oil*

• ¼ cup fresh basil*, chopped

• 1 garlic clove, minced

• Garnish with pea shoots*

• ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved • 2 scallions*, sliced

• ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cook pasta according to directions on box until al dente. Save 4 Tablespoons of cooking water. Drain and rinse.

2. Cook cleaned fiddleheads in boiling water (a rolling boil) for 5 to 10 minutes, until tender. Drain and place in ice-cold water.

This will shock the fiddleheads and stop the cooking process, leaving them bright green.

3. Heat olive oil in skillet on medium-high heat. Add garlic and red pepper. Cook for one minute. Add asparagus, juice, zest and pasta water. Cook on medium heat for 3 minutes. Add fiddleheads and cook an additional 2 minutes.

4. Add cooked pasta. Toss well until coated. Top with tomatoes, scallions, basil, and pea shoots.

Vikings

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Like with any genre of film making, there are periods of time where there’s an influx in a certain type of entertainment and then it ebbs away again. I have always enjoyed watching movies about the Vikings, being for Saratoga TODAY one who appreciates the aesthetics and stories of the Vikings. There are some great Viking movies out there. Of course there is “Thor,” the Mighty God of Thunder, and “The Vikings” starring Kirk Douglas as the Viking prince Einar and Tony Curtis as Eric the Slave. One of my favorites is the movie “How to Train your Dragon.” DreamWorks make such good pictures that it is no surprise that it is also one of the best Viking movies of all time, especially since they are based on the popular children’s books by Cressida Cowell. I believe I truly loved watching these movies, making modern day Vikings one who approaches the unknown with curiosity and strives to face hardships with courage. One who displays loyalty and honesty, and who values integrity and honor.

So what does being a Viking have to do with cooking? Apart from just the appetite, cooking shows make you yearn for one more thing; the cookware. INSTRUCTIONS 1. While pasta boils, melt 1/4 cup butter with olive oil in a large skillet. Add minced garlic, oregano, and half of green onions and saute until garlic becomes aromatic and slightly golden. Add white wine and chicken broth and boil rapidly until reduced by one third.

2. In another large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Add mushrooms and saute over medium heat until lightly browned. Push mushrooms to sides of pan and add sliced chicken and remaining green onions.

Season well with salt and pepper and saute until chicken is lightly browned and cooked through.

3. Add mushrooms, chicken, artichoke hearts and sliced black olives to sauce and simmer briefly to heat through. Pour over drained pasta and top with toasted pecans and crumbled feta. Toss well and serve immediately.

Genealogy and Local History Heritage Hunters Zoom Program | 1 p.m.

Presented by Dr. Michael Lucas, Curator of Historical Archaeology at the New York State Museum. Dr. Lucas’ current research focuses on the historical archaeology of slavery in the Hudson River Valley, with an emphasis on the period from 1750 to 1820. Al Di Meola, Dianne Reeves Headline SPAC’s Return of Live Music with Jazz Festival on June 26-27 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Absolutely Live Entertainment announce the return of the 2021 Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival, marking the first live performances on SPAC's stage since the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered arts venues last spring.

The festival will be headlined

by Dianne Reeves, Cécile Mclorin Salvant, Christian Mcbride's New Jawn, Al Di Meola, Joey Alexander and Artemis, presented by Skidmore Jazz Institute, and will also feature acclaimed local musicians including Garland Nelson Leading "Joyful Noise" And Hot Club Of Saratoga, presented by Caffè Lena.

Slated for Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27, gates will open each day at 10 a.m. with performances scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. The festival will be presented in compliance with current safety protocols to ensure the health and safety of artists, audience members and staff. As required by the State, all attendees of the festival will be required to show either proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of the event.

"Our Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival is always one of the most

exhilarating and anticipated weekends of the year, kicking off our summer season. While this year's festival will look a little bit different as a result of COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, the very fact that we will once again be able to join together on the SPAC grounds for live music feels absolutely miraculous,” said SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol, in a statement.

Performances from noon to 6 p.m. on both days, will take place on the main amphitheater stage.

Guests are welcome to bring in food in a clear plastic bag and factory sealed water; there will also be food and beverage options available to purchase on site. In addition, guests are permitted to bring in their own blankets (no larger than their designated pod size), chairs, personal umbrellas or clip-on umbrellas and essential personal items.

TICKET INFORMATION: Ticketholders who kept their seats from the 2020 Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival, which was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be reseated in similar locations and contacted by the SPAC Box Office.

SPAC Members will have early ticket access depending on membership level, beginning on May 18. Tickets for the public will be available to purchase on May 21.

Designated pods of two will be allocated and reserved for ticket buyers in the amphitheater, while designed pods of two and four will be available on the SPAC lawn.

Amphitheater tickets start at $130 per pod, which seat up to two people. Lawn tickets are available to purchase for $150 for a two-person pod, or $300 for a four-person pod.

Presentation by Former Mossad Agent in Operation Brothers

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs will host a presentation from former Mossad Agent Yola Reitman. Reitman will share her leading role impersonating a diving instructor of ‘Operation Brothers’ to rescue Ethiopian Jews. This virtual event will be direct from Israel on Sunday, May 23 at 3 p.m.

Reitman was recruited by Israeli intelligence agency, the Mossad, to lead the rescue of thousands of Ethiopian Jews who

had fled famine and war into neighboring Sudan.

Reitman played a key role in the mission which was fictionalized in a Netflix feature film titled “The Red Sea Diving Resort.”

Reitman’s discussion will be accompanied by a slideshow of true pictures alongside the real stories.

Memoir of A Music Shop Owner Saratoga Shop Owner Pens Story-Filled Memoir of the Shape of the Sounds Heard Around The World

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Walk past the shop on Phila Street that stands nestled alongside Hattie’s Restaurant and just beneath the legendary performance stage that is Caffe Lena. Here, standing behind the stenciled glass front windows of the woodwind shop that bears his name, there’s a good chance you will find Billy Cole, continuing to do the work just as he has over the past several decades.

What Cole does is he restores wind instruments.

Over the past 40-plus years, he figures he has worked on more than 50,000 of them, from the repair of the instruments of teenagers learning their craft in school orchestras, to the sonic sculpting of the musical tools heard atop some of the world’s grandest stages. Many of the stories are shared in his new book, “With The Band: Memoir of a music shop owner.”

Cole opened his first shop in 1977. Today, he writes, “I could never comprehend what a wonderful life I would lead when I started out so many years ago.”

The stories of his tune-filled life date to his earliest days - forging a long-lasting relationship with musician Nick Brignola that was initiated with the repair of a baritone sax, to an insider’s detail of friendships and alliances that includes a community of legendary Woodstock musicians, orchestra members playing with the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra, to Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson and an assortment of traveling luminaries who have graced the Saratoga Performing Arts stage.

He recognized the importance of the work early on. “Pitch, resonance, and sometimes intentional resistance could be shaped within an instrument to enable the artists to express the emotion in their music,” he writes in a 423-page memoir, accompanied by images and poignant glimpses of his family life, “with the help

STILLWATER — On April 27, the Stillwater Varsity Boys’ CrossCountry Team claimed the title of Wasaren League Champions for only the second time in the program’s history. Led by the efforts of sophomore rookie Dan Patrick, the boys won decisively over runner-up Berlin/New Lebanon. Members of the team in order of finish: Dan Patrick, Will Lutz, Michel Ghorayeb, Frank Perniciaro, Nevan Doubleday, Adam Conklin, Amoun Ghorayeb, and Gabe Williams. Coach McClements credits the team’s success to the effectiveness of the team to “pack up” and the great chemistry between the athletes. No seniors on this team, so they look forward to continued success in the Fall season.

Congrats to this week’s Athlete of the Week – Hannah Decker!

Hannah is a senior at Saratoga Springs High School, and is in the final year of her competition dance season. She competes for the studio, Spa City Dance and the Arts in Ballston Spa, where she is also an instructor and has a mini group of little ladies competing in tap with her choreography.

Hannah has been competing in dance since she was nine years old, and dancing since she was four years old. Her primary craft is tap dance, but she also competes in group lyrical, jazz, and contemporary dance styles. Just this year alone, she has received many awards and judges’ individual recognitions at her competitions. She is performing two tap solos this year, as last year’s dance competition season was canceled due to the pandemic. She placed 1st in her senior solo category, and received a “Tap Attack” judge’s shoutout at the Power Dance competition that

was recently held at the Saratoga Hilton. She has been recognized for her performance style and excellence in entertainment with her tap solos. In the fall of 2020, she was awarded the “total package” special award for her tap solo performance. Her group dances have done exceptionally well this year in competition too, and she loves performing with this group of ladies.

Outside of dance, she is an honors student and a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society. She will be attending the University of New Hampshire, intending to study secondary education with a focus in biology and the life sciences. She aspires to dance on the college dance team at UNH too.

SRYMCA SPRING PROGRAMS Basketball (ages 4-5 years old) This program is an introduction for boys and girls who are interested in basketball. Through play, participants will discover the fundamentals of basketball – dribbling, passing, shooting – and build muscle memory while increasing their hand/eye coordination. Players will learn in a supportive, safe, and noncompetitive environment where focus is on learning the game, meeting new friends, and having fun. The program takes place on Mondays from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Branch parking lot. The cost is $40 for members and $70 for non-members.

Girls Basketball (ages 6-9 years old) This program is designed for girls to develop fundamental basketball skills such as dribbling, shooting, passing, offense, and defense.

Players will learn in a supportive, safe, and noncompetitive environment where focus is on learning the game, meeting new friends, and having fun. The program takes place on Wednesdays from 6 to 6:40 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 to 10:40 a.m. in the Saratoga Branch gym until June 13. The cost is $50 for members and $70 for non-members.

Girls Basketball (ages 10-12 years old) This program is designed for girls to develop fundamental basketball skills such as dribbling, shooting, passing, offense, and defense. Players will learn in a supportive, safe, and noncompetitive environment where focus is on learning the game, meeting new friends, and having fun. The program takes place on Saturdays from 10:45 to 11:35 a.m. in the Saratoga Branch gym until June 12.

The cost is $50 for members and $70 for non-members.

Basketball- Beyond the Basic: Take your basketball player to the next level! This class provides each player with the skills and mental approach they will need to get a leg up on the competition. Emphasis will be placed on agility, the fundamentals of footwork, balance, lay ups using right and left hand, driving to the basket technics, reading the defense, and vertical jumping.

Beyond the Basics for ages 10-13 takes place on Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Beyond the Basics for ages 14-17 takes place on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The programs run until June 8. The cost is $70 for members and $100 for non-members.

CLIFTON PARK — The New York Animal Agriculture Coalition (NYAAC) presented a $1,000 check on Friday, May 7 to Shenendehowa Middle School students and Technology Teachers Andy Mink and Rock Travis, for volunteering to help build life-size cow displays. The dairy cows are part of a statewide effort to educate New Yorkers on all things dairy.

The cows will be traveling across the state beginning in June, which is National Dairy Month. A total of 12 students participated in the effort to build the bases for the cows.

The cows were picked up

from the school on Friday, May 7 by NYAAC Executive Director Eileen Jensen. They are now traveling to Central New York to be delivered to artists who were selected through an RFP process to paint the cows, highlighting dairy farms, dairy products, and farm facts.

Once complete, the cows will kick-off #DiscoverNYDairy – a social media campaign aimed at highlighting the faces and farms behind our food, and to educate New Yorkers on all things dairy.

The cows will visit well-known landmarks, destinations, and

restaurants across the state. The cows will travel from Central New York down to Long Island and back up again, stopping at familiar places where dairy products are sold to help New Yorkers discover delicious dairy products, and the faces and farms that help get those products to our kitchen tables.
