SARATOGA SPRINGS — Here’s something to look forward to in 2022. We will all be able to take an Amtrak train from Saratoga Springs to Burlington, VT, and back, of course. The ride itself will take a little over three hours. This will all be possible because the State of Vermont is investing in the infrastructure to extend passenger rail service from Rutland to Burlington.

According to Cathy Davis, the President of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber,

in Burlington, the late US Senator Jim Jeffords worked hard to bring resources from Washington D.C. to make this a reality. During a recent event at the Saratoga Springs train station, Cathy said: “This investment will create great opportunities for both of our regions. We both enjoy vibrant and walkabout downtowns. When connected by rail, there will be even more commerce between Saratoga and Burlington. This will allow visitors to more easily reach our destinations. I look forward to seeing Todd Shimkus hop off the train next year in Burlington.”

he Reverend Charles Preston arrived at the port of Hong Kong on May 12, 1854 after a voyage of 160 days from New York City - his final destination the city of Canton, China - where the Presbyterian Missionary Board had established a base of operation that included a school, hospital and chapel. There he would engage in his life’s work: conversion of the Chinese to Christianity.

Charles Finney Preston was born in Antwerp, NY on July 26, 1829, the first child of Dr. and Mrs. Calvin Preston. His middle name was selected as a tribute to Charles Grandison Finney, a social activist and leader of the Second Great Awakening, a religious revival based on a vision of the second coming of Jesus Christ.

The Prestons moved to Galway in 1830, attracted to the village by a family connection and the potential for a thriving medical practice. They settled in the village on East St. where they built a six bedroom home and raised a large family.

In Galway, Charles’ mother groomed him for missionary service to China, a priority of the Presbyterian Church. Charles Preston studied at the Galway Academy under the guidance of the Reverend Gilbert Morgan, becoming a member of the Galway Presbyterian Church at the age of fourteen. He next attended Union College, graduating in 1850, and then Princeton Theological Seminary, where he completed a three-year course. He was commissioned missionary to China by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in 1853 and left by sailing merchant ship, the Horatio, departing from New York for Canton in November of that year.

to religious conversion that he opposed on philosophical grounds. This put Charles at odds with a well-connected leader of the China Mission and ultimately led to his death. He was rescued from this educational endeavor by the outbreak of the Second Opium War, a conflict primarily between Great Britain and the Qing dynasty over the insistence of the English to freely distribute opium to the Chinese. This was in turn driven by a massive trade in-balance associated with English consumption of tea from China. Rev. Preston relocated to Macau where he developed the language skills necessary to preach in the Cantonese dialect.

At the end of the War, Rev. Preston returned to Canton where he built a chapel with his own and donated funds. There he preached for many years returning to the United States only once, leaving a son to be educated in Windham, Connecticut schools. He would never see him again.

After 23 years of missionary service his health began to decline, probably due to chronic dysentery. His doctor recommended return to the United States, but Rev. Preston’s plea for transfer on medical

grounds was turned down due to “insufficient funds in the Mission treasury,” or equally likely in retribution for his advocacy of preaching in the native language.

In a desperate attempt to save his life his doctor sent him to Hong Kong to recover. He died six days later at the home of a missionary with his wife and six children at his side. He was buried in the Happy Valley cemetery in Hong Kong; an obelisk monument provided by his three brothers marks the grave with the inscription “I am only resting.”

His wife and family returned to America where Charles’ brothers William and Platt, wealthy mill owners in Waitsburg, Washington, came to their rescue.

A tribute to Rev. Preston in the Union College Archives concludes with: “He learned the Chinese language as few foreigners learn it. He became the most effective preacher among our missionaries and filled Canton with his Gospel.”

A. I live in Greenfield.

Q. How long have you been a dispatcher?

A. I have been a dispatcher for 8 years.

Q. How did you get interested in becoming a dispatcher?

A. I saw a newspaper article about the test being given, I took the test, and I started the job.

Q. What is training like for the job?

A. It’s on-the-job training. You shadow someone, a senior dispatcher, to learn the dos and don’ts of being a dispatcher. And, they listen in when you start to answer calls. We answer police, EMS, fire, and nonemergency calls too.

Q. How many dispatchers are working at a time?

A. Only 2 to 3 at a time; we really get to know the officers one-on-one.

A. Mama Mia’s because I love their chicken parm.

Q. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A. The best advice I’ve received came from my grandfather who said, “Don’t pretend to be someone different from who you are – always be yourself.”

Mrs. Folks attended high school in Saratoga Springs. She also attended Boston University and New York University. She took many graduate classes at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Betty retired from the executive staff-Public Relations Department of the C&P Telephone Co. (now known as Verizon Corporation), spending 38 years with the Bell System.

Betty was an avid golfer; she and her late husband Arnold were long time members of the Country Club of Fairfax in Virginia and Deer Track Golf Resort. She is a former member of the National Office Management Association and the George Washington Club in Washington, DC. She spent

Week of May 21 – May 27, 2021 SARATOGA SPRINGS — A 19-year-old city man reportedly “attacking cars” while standing in the roadway of West Avenue last Friday afternoon is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. Police say at approximately 4:30 p.m. on May 7, they received multiple calls regarding the incident.

After arriving at the scene, officers attempted to converse with the man, who did not engage with the officers and instead began to run, jumping into the open passenger window of an occupied vehicle and attempting to force the driver out of the car, according to police. The driver, a 48-year-old woman, was removed from the car and officers subsequently took the man into custody.

The man, identified as Colby C. Flood, 19, of Saratoga Springs, was charged with attempted robbery in the second-degree/motor vehicle, and unlawful imprisonment in the first-degree – both felonies, and the misdemeanors: resisting arrest, obstruct

governmental administration, reckless endangerment property, and disorderly conduct: obstructing traffic. Flood was arraigned and sent to Saratoga County Jail on bail, police said. The 48-year-old driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and suffered some minor injuries from the incident.

No weapons were believed to be involved.

Daniel Ortega, 29, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 12 with criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a narcotic. Both charges are felonies.

Christon Barnes, 41, of Wilton, was charged May 12 in Saratoga Springs with criminal contempt, and aggravated family offense. Both charges are felonies.

Marcus Young, 35, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 14 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, and having no motor vehicle license.

Christina M. Flores, 41, and Shawn P. Flores, 42 – both of Malta, were each charged with cruelty towards animals – a misdemeanor under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law. They are accused of failing to provide sustenance to the animals and of keeping them in unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. The animals - two pit bulls - are currently receiving care at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter.

Timothy J. Quinlan, 40, of Rochester, was charged May 10 with felony burglary, in connection with an incident that occurred May 3. Quinlan is accused of forcibly gaining entry into the Saratoga Central Catholic High School on Monday, May 3 sometime during the overnight hours.

Police said he was gone from the school prior to staff and students arriving.

Raymond Darrah, 44, of Ballston Spa was charged May 3 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed

operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.

Koran Jeffers, 43, of Schenectady, was charged May 4 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, moving from lane unsafely, driving motor vehicle on/across a sidewalk, having a suspended registration and no inspection certificate.

Kaylee Dulmaine, 24, of Vernon, was charged May 6 in Saratoga Springs on a warrant with criminal tampering the third-degree, a misdemeanor.

Jose Madera, 39, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 8 with assault in the seconddegree, and resisting arrest.

Sarah Filmer, 25, of Fort Plain, was charged May 9 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, refusal to take a breath test, moving from lane unsafely, failure to notify DMV of address change.

Kayla Kelsey, 27, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 9 with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and registration suspended.

Carissa Robbins, 23, of Saratoga Springs, was charged May 9 with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

Alex J. Ryle, 18, of Ballston Spa, was charged May 14 with one count felony rape and one misdemeanor count sexual misconduct. Ryle is suspected of engaging in sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 15, while he was over the age of 18, as well as engaging in sexual intercourse with another person who was 16 years of age at the time, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office. The acts are said to have occurred between February and April 2021 in the Town of Milton. He was sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $500 cash, $5,000 insured bond, or $40,000 partially secure bond. Orders of Protection have been issued by the court for the victims.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Congressman Paul Tonko announced $143,240,822 in COVID-19 relief for colleges, universities and students in the Capital Region to help institutions with the financial fallout from the pandemic and continue serving their students safely. At least half of the funding each institution receives will be distributed in the form of emergency cash assistance grants to students who are facing hunger,

homelessness, and other hardship.

The American Rescue Plan provides $36 billion for nearly 3,500 public and private, nonprofit colleges and universities nationwide.

Funding for Capital Region colleges, universities, public and nonprofit institutions include: $44,253,101 to State University of New York at Albany, $1,135,556 to Albany Schoharie Schenectady Saratoga BOCES: $9,324,647 to College of Saint Rose; $14,846,000

to SUNY Empire State College; $18,397,446 to Hudson Valley Community College; $13,642,165 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; $4,953,656 to Russell Sage College; $6,901,679 to Siena College, and $4,175,642 to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.

“A strong investment in our students is a strong investment in our future,” Congressman Tonko said, in a statement. “Our colleges and universities have been

hit hard by COVID-19, and our nation cannot hope to recover without federal support to these institutions. I am proud our American Rescue Plan is continuing to deliver that critical support.

I will continue to work alongside the Biden Administration to ensure that our federal response meets the needs of our students and higher education institutions across the Capital Region, New York State and America.”

Friends of the New York State Military Museum Receives Donation from Stewart’s SARATOGA SPRINGS — Stewart's Holiday Match program has donated $1,850 to the Friends of the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center.

"Stewart's is a tremendously supportive organization, donating to non-profit organizations in the Capital Region and beyond," said former state Sen. Roy McDonald, president of the Friends of the New York State Military Museum,

in a statement. "We are grateful to receive this donation," McDonald said. The state Military Museum is located at 61 Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs in a historic National Guard Armory.

The Friends of the New York State Military Museum is a nonprofit organization created in 1991 to support and assist with educational programs and new exhibits at the museum. The donation from Stewart's will be used for an

upcoming speakers' series planned late this year and next year focusing on attracting young people and families to the museum.

Since 1986 Stewart's Shops in upstate New York and southwestern Vermont have collected and matched donations in their 337 shops from Thanksgiving until Christmas each year. This past holiday season Stewart's received 1,752 applications requesting nearly $5 million in support while

the Holiday Match program had just over $1.88 million to donate.

The museum has been closed to the public since March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state Division of Military and Naval Affairs will determine when the museum opens again.

The event “Tomato, Tomoto, Tomorrow!” is Youth2’s fourth Pop-UP. Free cherry tomato plants will be given away to all interested people on Wednesday, June 2

from 4-6 p.m. at the Jefferson Terrace Housing Maintenance Parking Lot. A second giveaway time will be on Saturday, June 5 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. outside the Soup Kitchen on 24 Circular Street. These events will take place rain or shine and follow COVID-safe protocols.

BALLSTON SPA — The county this week voted to approve its participation in a pilot program that allows a hunting license holder who is 12 or 13 years of age to hunt deer with a crossbow, rifle, shotgun or muzzle loading firearm.

The activity must take place “in areas where and during the hunting season in which such implements may be used,” as well as when accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or mentor, according to the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors’ resolution.

In his 2021-22 budget, Gov. Andrew Cuomo included legislation that would allow 12 and 13-year-olds to hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow. Shortly after the budget was signed in April, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors promptly initiated action to hold a public hearing and vote on a Local Law authorizing county participation in the pilot program. The public

hearing was held just prior to the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday afternoon.

“Youth hunting has been a priority for me almost since I first took office,” Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner told the Board prior to their vote. “We have a good program for youth hunting that I hope will be the foundation for a permanent program as we move forward.”

The new legislation will be treated as a pilot for upstate counties through 2023. New York had been the only state to not authorize young hunters to use such weapons for larger game.

“This is an exciting development for the youth hunters in Saratoga County. Hunting is a formative activity for many families in our community, and we look forward to providing new opportunities for our young hunters to safely and effectively learn techniques to grow and improve their hunting season experience. We encourage the public to educate themselves on new and existing guidelines as we welcome the deer hunting

season,” said Todd Kusnierz, Chairman of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors.

The new deer hunting guidelines were included in this year’s New York State Budget to enhance the economic opportunities of the local hunting industry and cultivate a strong initiation of new hunters.

“Thanks to the efforts of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors for joining this statewide initiative, young people in Saratoga County will have the opportunity to safely learn to use crossbows and firearms and engage in these outdoor activities and traditions,” Sen. Jim Tedisco told the board.

In line with the new legislation requirements, each qualified county is required to “opt-in” on the adoption of the new program for 12 and 13-year-olds. If completed and notified by June 1 the accepted counties’ decision will be published in the DEC’s annual hunting and trapping regulations guide. The final date to notify officials is Sept. 1.

SARATOGA — Army Cpl. Clifford S. Johnson, a native of Valatie, was a member of Headquarters Battery, 57th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action Dec. 6, 1950, when his unit was attacked by enemy forces near the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea. Following the battle, his remains could not be recovered. He was 20 years old.

Almost seventy years later, Johnson’s remains were turned over by North Korea on July 27, 2018. He was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on April 16, 2020, after his remains were identified using circumstantial and material evidence and mitochondrial and autosomal DNA analysis.

Johnson’s remains are scheduled to be interred at Saratoga National Cemetery May 20.

Johnson’s name is recorded on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, along with the others who are still missing from the Korean War. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for. More than 7,600

Saratoga County Supervisors Meeting Notes, May 18, 2021

• Woodlawn Ave Building Brought 182 Bids The Board approved the sale of its building at 31 Woodlawn Ave. in Saratoga Springs to the Adirondack Trust Company for $2,800,100.

An online auction was held April 6-28 and the Adirondack Trust Company was the highest bidder.

In all, 182 bids were received.

• Battling COVID-19: The Next Phase On March 17, 2020, the Board of Supervisors effected a transfer of $1 million to Saratoga County Public Health Services to allow Public Health Services in an effort to combat COVID-19. Temporary staff were hired, supplies and equipment procured, and help designated to meet the needs of those in the community subject to quarantine.

Citing the fight against COVID19 having entered the inoculation phase, the Board this week effected a transfer of $700,000 to continue efforts to combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds for this new phase are allocated to secure additional adequate facilities, supplies, equipment, and temporary staff as needed to administer vaccine.

• County Approves PR Director Position The Board of Supervisors approved the creation of a Director of Public Relations as a new position under the county administrator. The position will have a base salary of $73,127. The director of public relations will report to County Administrator Steve Bulger.

• We Can Hear You, Soon Long identified as being in need of an upgrade, the Board of Supervisors Room and Board of

Supervisors Conference Room are slated to receive audio and visual upgrades to allow more efficient and effective interaction with the public during open meetings.

This week, the Board authorized the county to enter into an agreement with Presentation Concepts Corporation of Syracuse for audio/visual upgrade design to be implemented in the Board of Supervisors Room and Board of Supervisors Conference at a cost of up to $143,735. The agreement is subject to the approval of the County Attorney.

• A Full-Service Public Health Department The county approved the appropriation of $200,000 to the operating budget of Public Health Services to assist with costs in efforts to convert to a full-service public health department. The New York State Department of Health said they will no longer be providing environmental health services in Saratoga County, which are currently provided by the DOH through the Glens Falls District Office.

“A transition to a full-service health district will provide benefits to the health and welfare of the citizens of Saratoga County,” according to the county board’s resolution. “It is anticipated that the conversion to a full-service health district will require significant planning, investment and expenditures including but not limited to contractual costs, legal costs, and consultant fees, and this Board in an effort to provide assistance to Public Health Services is appropriating these funds to assist with the conversion.”

The $200,000 appropriation is broken down this way: Attorney’s Fees $100,000; Other Professional Services $ 50,000; Departmental Supplies $50,000.

NY Adopts CDC Mask and Distancing Guidelines; In Saratoga County - Half the Population Have Completed Vaccine Series, Infection Rate Lowest Since October ALBANY — Three hundred and ninety-nine days after New York was the first state in the country to implement a mask mandate, fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to use a face covering in most public places, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced this week.

New York State adopted the CDC's updated guidance on masks and social distancing as of May 19. In most settings, vaccinated individuals will not be required to wear a mask. Unvaccinated individuals, under both CDC and state guidance must wear masks in all public settings.

Most business capacities

– which were based upon percentage of maximum occupancy — were also removed on May 19. Businesses will only be limited by the space available for patrons or parties of patrons to maintain the required social distance of 6 feet, according to the state. Businesses may eliminate the 6 feet of required social distancing and increase capacity if all patrons within the establishment — or a separate designated part of the establishment — present proof of full vaccination status. Proof of full vaccination status can be provided by patrons through paper form, digital application, or

the State's Excelsior Pass.

COVID-19 positivity and hospitalization rates are at their lowest levels since last fall, and more than 10 million New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose.

In Saratoga County, the current 7-day average infection positivity rate is 1.1%, the lowest since late October. As far as the vaccine, 58.1 percent of Saratoga County residents have received at least one vaccine dose, and 50% have completed the vaccine series.

Cole’s Collision Opens New Wilton Location

Q. How long have you been in the industry?

MV: I’ve been in the industry since I was 17 years old. I’m 39 now. And I’ve been with Cole’s Collision for about 10 years.

WILTON — Cole’s Collision has opened their newest facility in Wilton. Located at 601 Maple Ave., the 14,500 square-foot facility is one of five Cole’s locations – which also includes centers in Ballston Spa, Clifton Park, Colonie, and North Greenbush.

First opened for business in January 2007 in Colonie, the family-owned business is a supporter

of many local charities and community organizations. It has built its reputation on providing the highest quality repairs, and working with anything from small door dings and fender benders, to major collision work.

Within the 5 shop locations, Cole’s is certified currently by: Honda, Acura, Subaru, Tesla, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, and

Nissan. The Wilton location is currently Volvo Certified and is in the beginning stages of training and equipment to be Tesla Certified, which may be completed by the end of June, said Cole’s Collision Centers General Manager Josh Jewett.

Wilton is currently fixing 110 to 140 cars per month and is looking to increase that with added bays and paint booth. Overall, the company is currently fixing 700 to 900 cars each month.

The manager of the Cole’s Collision Wilton location is Matt Vogt.

Q: How many staff do you have in Wilton MV: We have 13.

Q: What sort of work is done? What services do you offer?

MV: Automobile repairs on all makes and models, as far as collision repairs.

Q: What’s the most exotic vehicle you’ve worked on?

MV: I would say anything from a Maserati to a ’69 Corvette.

Q: Has the industry changed during the time you’ve worked in it?

MV: The industry is definitely changing. Vehicles are getting more and more technologically savvy to where they require a lot more attention, and a lot more scanning and calibration with all the sensors on them.

Q: What’s in the near future?

MV: There are a lot of cool things coming down the pike. At this specific location we are Volvo Certified. We are soon to be Tesla Certified at this location, so we will be able to work on Teslas.

Q: Like many industries, the training of your employees and the equipment you use have likely had to adapt and become more technologically savvy as well?

MV: Absolutely. There is certain equipment to buy. All of our paint is waterborne, so we are helping the environment and cutting back on waste. We have the latest and greatest frame machines, and we are aluminum certified to do all aluminum repairs. And we are seeing a lot of aluminum panels, which requires a different way of repairing than back-inthe-day. There is a lot more training involved. We are I-Car Gold Class certified – which means we have all the up-to-date training necessary and in place for repairing these types of vehicles that are being built a different way now.

Q. Is there anything else that you would like to add for folks to know?

MV: We’re certainly here for anybody that wants to stop in and get an estimate, and we work on all makes and models.

Roma Foods Importing Company Sold SARATOGA SPRINGS — Cardona’s Market last week announced the acquisition of Roma Foods Importing Company.

Roma Foods’ Latham and Saratoga Springs markets are anticipated to begin operating under the Cardona’s banner in June.

Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund Accepting Grant Applications SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund is now accepting grant applications from eligible nonprofit charities headquartered in the Saratoga, Warren and Washington County areas.

The grant window is open until Aug. 31, 2021, according to Brian Straughter, Chair of the Community Fund’s Independent Advisory Committee. Grants are to be used during the 2022 calendar year. Grant information and application forms may be obtained from the ATCCF website at ATCCF.org ATCCF was established in 2009 to build an endowment that acts as a perpetual source of funding for the broad array

of nonprofit organizations that improve the quality of life in the community and to assist them in addressing issues of common concern.

Since the inception of the Autumn of Giving Match Campaign in 2013, the Lend-AHand Grants program has provided more than 235 grants, totaling nearly $462,000 to local nonprofits. I also look forward to Cathy hopping off the train here in Saratoga. Our two chambers of commerce have already begun talking about what we can do to make this connection work for our hospitality sectors. One likely project will involve us putting together travel packages from Burlington to Saratoga County that Cathy and her team will promote to their members and their employees. Likewise, they will organize travel packages for Saratoga residents to visit Burlington that we will promote.

When Cathy spoke about expanding commerce, the talk quickly turned to GlobalFoundries.

The company’s headquarters is now in Malta. A significant percentage of their 3,000 employees live in Saratoga County. The company also has operations in Burlington.

This means their employees here and there often travel between our two communities. This is a commute that now must be done by car.

“GlobalFoundries has semiconductor manufacturing facilities located near both Saratoga Springs, New York, and Burlington, Vermont, which will be well served by the restart of the Ethan Allen train line and extension into Burlington,” said Laurie Kelly, Vice President, Global Communications, GlobalFoundries. “We support the efforts of the Empire State Passenger Association, the Saratoga County Chamber and Lake Champlain

Chamber, and are excited that our GF employees will soon have the opportunity to travel easily by passenger rail between our sites.”

Besides the work being done by the State of Vermont, we hope that the State of New York will also invest more in rail service to and from Saratoga. For instance, the extension of the Empire Service to Saratoga Springs could allow a train to be heading south from our City much earlier in the morning.

According to the Empire State Passenger Service, a train leaving Saratoga at 7:12 a.m. would arrive in Schenectady 36 minutes later.

The same train would be at the Albany/Rensselaer Train station by 8:10 a.m. That’s less than one hour to Albany. The travel time of this train is very similar to the time it takes a commuter to travel from Saratoga to Schenectady by car or bus.

With train service already heading back to Saratoga from these two cities after 5:00 p.m., it’s possible to create a “commuter rail

option” for people who live here but work in Albany, Schenectady or Troy. Given a little flexibility with schedules, we could also use passenger rail to attract talent from these three cities within our region to Saratoga.

As now structured, Amtrak is a contract service provider for passenger rail service to the State of New York. If New York invests is willing to pay Amtrak

to extend service, they are more than willing to do so. So our ability to make this happen rests with the New York State Department of Transportation.

During our recent event to talk about expanding rail services, we were joined by Senators Daphne Jordan and Jim Tedisco as well as Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner. Each spoke positively about these two investments and the economic opportunity they represent. We look forward to working with them in the coming weeks and months as we seek to start a new dialogue with the State of New York. One that is focused on making us stronger together by connecting Troy, Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Rutland and Burlington by passenger rail. All aboard!

steoporosis affects 55 percent of the population age 50 and older in the United States.

Osteoporosis is most prevalent in postmenopausal women due to hormonal changes from reduced estrogen and progesterone production. There are also a number of factors that may also contribute to osteoporosis including certain medications, lifestyle habits (ie. diet, exercise, and sleep), and other diseases.

Over time bones become porous and fragile due to an imbalance in the activity of osteoclasts (cells that absorb bone) and osteoblasts (cells that form bone). Osteoclast activity is higher and causes an increased rate of resorption of bone leading to porous bones. The most common sites include the low back, hips, and the long bones of the legs. When bones become porous and fragile there is a higher risk for fractures in these areas.

There is considerable research outlining the correlation between spinal compression fractures and osteoporosis. Compression fractures affect approximately 25 percent of all postmenopausal women in the United States. The prevalence of this condition steadily increases with advancing age, reaching 40 percent in women 80 years of age.

Posture is often dependent on our poor habits and changes that occur as we age. As we age the postural muscles of the spine tend to get weaker and the upper spine begins to curve forward. This is called thoracic kyphosis. When this happens, the load of the bones is received on the front of the spine.

When load cannot be equally dispersed and the bone is fragile, the bones can fracture.

These compression fractures can be painful,

debilitating, and can decrease your quality of life. Improving posture is especially important for reducing the stress to the vertebrae associated with spinal compression fractures. Improving an individual’s posture requires education about our everyday movements and improving the strength of the postural muscles. Yoga is one of the key exercise prescriptions that improves posture when done consistently (4-6 months). Not to mention the other benefits of improved balance, better coordination, greater range of motion, improved strength, and improvements in gait.

Another important factor to consider for those with osteoporosis is balance and stability.

Falls among the elderly, especially those with osteoporosis, are associated with more severe injuries and can involve high-cost medical intervention. In fact, falls are responsible for 90% of the growing increase in hip fractures.

One out of three adults aged 65 and older fall each year. Like strength training, balance improves with practice. Challenging the balance system consistently in a safe environment improves that system, and makes you feel more confident in overcoming slips, trips, and falls that lead to fractures.

Saratoga Springs City School District Budget Vote and Board of Election Results SARATOGA SPRINGS — Residents of the school district approved the proposed $134,623,813 school budget for the 2021-2022 school year by a vote of 3,318 to 1,152.

The budget is balanced through a combination of state aid, property taxes, and fund

balance, and included a tax levy change of 2.25%. It is in line with the District’s Pathway Vision and enhances academic programs and services such as the addition of an English as a New Language teacher, resources for ELA curriculum renewal, expansion of the extended school year

program, a 1:1 device for incoming ninth graders, and a tech support position.

Also passed by a vote of 3,449 to 1,017 was Proposition 2, the bus bond proposition to spend an estimated $1,165,000 on six 66-passenger buses, three 30-passenger buses, 2 24-passenger

buses, and one service vehicle.

State aid will reimburse the district for approximately 40%.

District residents also voted to elect three candidates to the Board of Education for three-year terms.

Connie Woytowich received 2,851 votes. John Ellis received 2,344 votes. Amanda Ellithorpe received

2,251 votes. Casey Putnam received 2,232 votes. Christina Kraszewski received 2,208 votes. *Please note that the budget vote and Board of Education election results were unofficial at the time this was written. They were reviewed and verified at the Board of Education meeting on May 19.

BALLSTON SPA — LifeWorks Head Start celebrated its 56th birthday on May 18.

For over 50 years, they have helped families get their children prepared both socially and academically for Kindergarten.

LifeWorks currently has 10 classroom sites spanning the entirety of Saratoga County, and is enrolling now for September.

One site in particular, Ballston Commons, officially reopened on May 3 for in-person classes.

Something that seemed entirely out of reach for both teachers, staff, and families a few months ago had finally become a reality.

The site, which was previously located at Gordon Creek Elementary School, is now tucked away nicely in the Malta Commons Business Park. The new space allows for more room for both administration as well as students and teachers.

programs since everything shut down due to COVID-19 in March of last year. Switching from virtual to face-to-face seems to already have done wonders for the childrens’ ability to focus, learn and thrive. The site only runs for two and a half hours each day, Monday – Thursday. Once the location receives its daycare

license, the site will be open for six hours a day, Monday – Friday.

Apples were an easy choice!

While it may seem like April is an odd time of year to highlight apples, and since other schools chose apples as a Harvest of the Month in the fall time, it’s a great way to educate students on the importance of cold storage crops.

Fruits and vegetables which are harvested in the fall can be kept fresh for many months and enjoyed all year long!

Galway’s Harvest of the Month was a little different due to the involvement of the elementary art teacher Lynn Wasserman.

She opened her classroom to highlighting the Harvest of the Month Apples to all of her classes (pre-K - 6th grade) during their art period. Students were able to taste their apples and give feedback on what they thought about them. If they thought the apples

Superintendents in BOCES Advocate for Additional Guidance in School Reopening SARATOGA SPRINGS — In a letter dated May 4, 2021, 92 school superintendents in the WSWHE BOCES, HFM BOCES, Questar III BOCES, and Capital Region BOCES regions appealed to local legislators to advocate for additional guidance that will allow area students to return to school onsite every day when the new school year opens in the fall of 2021.

They said, “while the most

recent guidance from April 9, 2021 is helpful in many regards, there continues to be many restrictions that will ultimately make a complete return to school impossible.”

In particular, they seek changes in four key areas: cohorts at the secondary level, social distancing on school buses, social distancing in classrooms and cafeterias, and guidance on in-person, virtual, and hybrid learning.

were sweet, crunchy, tart, dry, juicy, soft and/or hard. They also were able to color some educational apple coloring pages. Lynn Wasserman also spoke to the students about where they can get local apples, and why it is important to eat locally sourced products and produce. The students also learned about the parts of an apple, different types, and the season of an apple tree.

The first Harvest of the Month for Galway CSD is in the books and a great success!

SARATOGA COUNTY — The Saratoga County History Center is pleased to announce a new partnership with Saratoga Springs High School. The History Center is eager to support young scholars, give them a venue to present their work, and connect the classroom to the community.

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 3, students from the high school’s Saratoga Pathways Academy (an interdisciplinary history-literature, project-based program), will present their explorations of human rights issues since World War II. Four groups will present each night for ten minutes

per group. After each presentation, audience members and a panel of judges will assess the project, offer feedback and ask questions. he two-night event will be held on Zoom and is free and open to the public. Audience participation is encouraged. We welcome the family and friends of the student presenters, as well as anyone interested in history, human rights, or education in general.

ith spring’s last projected frost date safely behind us, gardening enthusiasts take out their trowels and prepare garden plots for planting. But if you’re new to gardening, the process may seem overwhelming. We spoke with Susan Beebe, Assistant Director/ Agriculture Issue Leader of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, to understand the basics of gardening with starter plants.

To begin, determine where you would like to plant.

Perhaps you have space for a garden or raised beds in your yard, or maybe planting in containers seems more feasible.

around. The counterpart is that these mixes have a tendency to dry out, so depending on the location, you may have to water your containers more,” explains Beebe.

If planting in the ground, Susan Beebe explains that the first and most crucial step is to determine the pH of your soil. “Soil pH is important because it will help you prepare to plant your garden,” explains Beebe. To collect a soil sample, walk through the area that you would like to plant and collect soil samples from various places. Dig 3” to 8” deep and scoop about ½ cup of soil into a clean container. Soil samples may be brought to Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener table at the farmers’ market on the third Wednesday of every month or directly to their office.

Once your soil is ready, it’s time to buy plants.

Several vendors offer various herbs, fruit, and vegetable starter plants at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. These plants are typically several weeks old and have been nurtured through the most delicate early stages of growth by professional growers in a greenhouse. If you have questions about what to plant, ask the growers: Balet Flowers & Design, Burger’s MarketGarden, Gomez Veggie Ville, Green Jeans Market Farm, Leaning Birch, and Old Tavern Farm.

If planting in raised beds, Beebe recommends combining potting soil and compost to hold water and prevent moisture from draining out. “Soil is alive and full of microorganisms that plants need to survive,” says Beebe. “Adding green manure, compost, or even a cover crop can keep soil healthy while planting in raised beds.”

If planting in containers, Beebe advises using soilless mixes rather than potting soil. “A benefit to the soilless mixes is that they are much lighter than potting soil and allow you to move your containers

Now it’s time to plant. Once you’ve popped the first plant out of the container, pull the roots apart with your hands gently; you can look to see how tightly wound the roots are. “You need to pull the roots apart with your hands gently,” Susan Beebe instructs. “You may even use a little knife to break the roots because the goal is to stop their circling motion so that they can spread into the ground,” she adds. When planting, maintain the level it was grown at rather than planting deeper. “The only exception is leggy tomato plants that you can bury deeper,” says Beebe.

Once your starters are planted, water generously and ensure 6+ hours of sunlight a day. Some leafy crops like spinach can thrive with less sun; however, vegetables like carrots, beets, and peppers need 6+ hours a day.

Fruit and vegetables thrive and produce more with light fertilizing at planting. The appropriate fertilizer depends on how you’re growing and what your growing. Beebe recommends side-dressing again with fertilizer 2-3 weeks after planting to ensure healthy, productive plants.

With your new garden well underway, Beebe has some takeaway points.

“You need trial and error, so don’t be scared by anything. And each year try something you haven’t tried before. It’s not always going to work, but you will continue to learn.”

Strawberries Hello my Foodie Friends !

Did you know that May 21 is National Strawberries and Cream Day? We get to celebrate having fresh strawberries and whipped cream. This is one of my favorite desserts and snacks. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, and potassium. There are so many ways to use strawberries; you can eat them for breakfast and add granola for some texture, drizzle chocolate on them, or make strawberry cream pie or shortcake! Growing up, I lived by a farm that grew strawberries. The last weeks of May would bring the start to some beautifully ripe and delicious strawberries. My mother would load up the five of us with buckets and send us on a journey into the blooming fields. We loved being out in the fields with the warm sunshine and the bright red and green fruits. My two sisters were diligent in looking for the biggest, reddest strawberries. However, my brothers and I preferred to create a “bug competition” looking for the most bugs and different bugs we could find. The other issue was when we did pick the strawberries, it was difficult not to take a bite out of them. My mother would often find our buckets filled with little bites taken from several of the strawberries. I have to admit the best part of the day was eating the strawberries. Getting children involved with gardening and harvesting fruits is a great way to create memories. Being involved with creating a garden or visiting one is a wonderful way to encourage eating fresh garden harvests. Although my mother and grandmother did not have strawberry fields, they did have beautiful vegetable gardens.

One of my favorite memories is when my mother would ask us to gather rocks for her garden. Picking out the largest and coolest rock kept us three, highly energized boys busy for hours. Another favorite memory was plucking the fruits of my mother and grandmothers gardens. Snacking on the garden vegetables was another challenge for us to avoid. We would play hide and seek in the garden while nibbling on some of the garden treasures. My brothers and I would try to hide and flatten our bodies close to the ground as soon as we heard either my mother or grandmother asking us what we were up to.

A strawberry huller is a small kitchen tool used to remove leaves and the hull from the top of a strawberry. Lots of dishes call for it. The

s e i r r e b w Stra m a e r C d an INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 cups fat-free sour cream • 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1 quart fresh strawberries, hulled and halved (reserve 6 whole for garnish)

• 2 tablespoons amaretto liqueur

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a small bowl, whisk together the fat-free sour cream, brown sugar and liqueur.

2. In a large bowl, add the halved strawberries and sour cream mixture. Stir gently to mix. Cover and refrigerate until well-chilled, about 1 hour.

3. Scoop the strawberries into 6 colorful bowls or chilled sherbet glasses. Garnish with whole strawberries and serve immediately.

huller, which resembles a mini set of tongs with tips or you can get the one with teethlike edges, allows you to push the tips into the top of a strawberry (around the stem), grip, twist, pull, and you’re done.

The advantage to using a huller is that you lose much less fruit than if you just cut the ends off of your berries. Yes, you could use a knife.

However, the huller is much safer. Another item to have is a paring knife to help you slice up your strawberries.

This spring, step into the strawberry fields with friends and family or stop by the farmers’ market to pick up some strawberries. While you are creating your favorite strawberry dish, maybe even put on the Beatles and listen to “Strawberry Fields Forever” (oh! I am showing my age). Remember my Foodie Friends; “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Craft Fair at Brookside The Saratoga County History Center is thrilled to announce a county-wide craft fair. The family-friendly free event will be held at beautiful Brookside Museum, located at 6 Charlton St., Ballston Spa on Saturday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Guests will be able to shop a wide variety of locally handcrafted collectibles, antiques, and farm products. Moreover, the event is juried, and vendors will be judged on their originality, creativity, and craftsmanship. No mass-produced or commercially made items will be permitted.

We didn't want to trouble family or friends with our furbaby sharing our special day so we hired CaNine to Five. They were fantastic, they created an amazing video that showcased our dog's perspective of the wedding. He literally had a gopro on him! Right before the party ended, we had a lantern release ceremony. And if the cake wasn't enough, we had a sundae bar with our favorite Stewart's ice cream flavor--Crumbs along the Mohawk. Whimsical White Fox created hilarious drink signs to go along with our signature drinks. These drinks were inspired by our alter egos and our beloved dog, Cesar. "Tipsy Mermaid" "Pick Six" and "All Hail Cesar." Instead of the traditional father daughter dance, my Dad and I surprised our guests with a performance inspired by the Little Mermaid's ending scene when King Triton gives Ariel her legs to be with her prince. My bridesmaids and groom were a part of the routine!

ADVICE TO PASS ALONG...

I recommend first look, it was the most authentic experience in our entire relationship, such RAW emotion. I get teared up thinking about it. The details of your bridesmaids go far! I am so happy I didn't buy my bridesmaids gifts that weren't featured in the wedding. The Kendall Scott earrings will always remind my girls how much I appreciate them, and the earrings were a perfect accent piece! Please get the wedding videographer! You will want to look back on this day. And video captures the candids, the jokes and smiles. I can't wait to look back on our wedding for years to come.

Every wedding guest left with a customized lottery ticket that read, “Wishing you riches from the new Mr and Mrs.” We wish everyone luck finding their “other half.” And maybe give that person in your inbox a chance!

Beekman Street Art Fair TO RETURN IN JUNE

SARATOGA SPRINGS — After a hiatus last year, the Beekman Street Art Fair returns on Sunday, June 13. The event will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. when 40 juried artisans will set up along Beekman Street. The street will be closed from Grand Ave to West Circular for the family-friendly fair.

Organizers say due to COVID restrictions, the fair will be scaled down but will still feature a diverse collection of artwork by accomplished New York State artists and makers, most from the Capital District.

The scuffle of footsteps mate with emergency sirens and the honks of car horns. Snippets of conversation jarred by the warning bleats of trucks moving backwards and mix with sonic wind-blown harmonies that cling to the air.

Glens Falls native Karl Bertrand performs and produces for Air Bertr&.

Instruments include, guitars, pianos, organs, synthesizers, and sometimes drums. Field recordings are often utilized as well. Mix in Connor Dunn of Ballston Spa, whose saxophonist is featured on a new piece, “City Walk,” to be released May 28.

How did this project form?

“I began to get into ambient music in 2018, initially as a listener. The music eased my mind as I wrestled with insomnia and anxiety. I’d already been writing and recording songs for years by then, so it was pretty natural for me to start making ambient music myself,” Bertrand writes.

Not surprisingly, the band’s influences include ambient artists such as Brian Eno, and Harold Budd.

Local music aficionados will recognize Bertrand and Dunn as founding members of Saratoga Springs based indie rock jam band Let’s Be Leonard.

“City Walk” was recorded on a handheld cassette recorder during a walk from Manhattan’s upper east side to midtown. An improvised electric piano was later added to

the field recording with the sounds of the saxophone layered across the top. The piece clocks in at 27 minutes. “A nice meditative amount of time,” Bertrand says.

The Stars Are Out Tonight Concert Series Kicks Off This Weekend at The Mansion Inn The George West Mansion was purchased in 2001 by Jeffrey Wodicka and Neil Castro of Saratoga Springs and since 2002 has operated as The Mansion of Saratoga.

Located about 7 miles in a straight line down Route 29 from downtown Saratoga Springs, the historic inn at 801 Route 29, Rock City Falls, features a full slate of high-quality concerts in an intimate outdoor setting with a light fare menu created by Executive Chef Rick Bieber, a classically trained French Chef who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Collage of Culinary Arts.

This season’s staged offerings include everything from singing favorites from the Great American Songbook and a musical journey through 80 years of movies and musicals, to celebrated Broadway performers and feelgood ‘90s Boy Band nostalgia Q: How did you find your way to the Mansion Inn?

Q: How did the concert series come about?

Jeffrey Wodicka: Neil and I bought the property after 9/11. We were driving through downtown Saratoga and one of the big Victorians was for sale and I did one of those, ‘I wonder what these things sell for,’ and looked it up. It didn’t come up, but what did was The Mansion on Route 29. We ended up owning it about three weeks later.

JW: This is our seventh or eighth year doing this.

My partner and I were thinking: It’s one thing to go SPAC and see the ballet and the orchestra, or to go to Proctors and see a traveling road show, but what would be neat is to bring up some top names, some who people know, some who they probably don’t know but who are unbelievable in the degree of talent they have, and to put them in an intimate setting.

There’s no more than 130 people in the house. Every seat is orchestra, so to speak. And afterwards, they actually get to meet these people, take pictures with them and mingle with them.

What we didn’t know was that we bought the historic George West mansion. George West was a tycoon in the period from the Civil War to the turn of the century. His claim to fame was he invented the flat-bottom paper bag that we (still) use every day. Isn’t that crazy? He was so rich he had his own railroad train that would bring him to the Mansion in Rock City Falls. And if you know where to look in the weeds, between Route 29 and the Kaydeross, his station is still there.

Q: In addition to The Stars Are Out Tonight Concert Series, which kicks off this weekend, what are some of the other happenings at the Mansion Inn? JW: What we’re really focused on is being an Event Venue. That ranges from large weddings to business meetings, and private parties – from anniversary and birthday parties to special events.

So, we took the old George West carriage house and turned it into a theater. The wood is seasoned, it dates to the 1860’s, so the sound quality is phenomenal. The performers say it’s like playing inside of a violin, and we were doing that until COVID hit.

Q: How are you safely setting things up for the 2021 season?

JW: This year, we said: let’s change this around. Let’s operate out on the deck. It’s a huge deck and it’s tented.

They key is there are no sides. It’s exterior seating, but it’s protected from the elements. If it rains, we’re covered. So we moved the stage and the sound system to

the deck, and we’re doing table seating - with your own party. That’s key.

You can’t go in and sit with anybody. The tables are socially distanced, and each concert will follow the latest COVID rules and regulations that are in place at the time of the event. The capacity right now is at 80 to 100, and we can probably go to 130. The Tickets range from $45 to $60, and we have a full bar and will have a light fare menu by our Executive Chef Rick Bieber.

SPAC Presents Immersive, Outdoor Celebration of Live Performance, Poetry and Art June 5 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Performing Arts Center announces that “The 2021 Adirondack Trust Company Festival of Young Artists” will return on Saturday, June 5 for an in-person celebration of live performance, poetry and art on the SPAC grounds.

The festival will feature more than 200 local student dancers, singers, musicians, poets and visual artists performing alongside acclaimed modern dance company Pilobolus. Due to health and safety concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival has been

reconfigured into a guided journey through the SPAC grounds with immersive, timed performances and scheduled arrival times for guests. The festival is free to experience, but ticket availability will be extremely limited. The general public will have the opportunity to register for tickets at: spacfoya.org.

Conceived and directed by Pilobolus, the festival will kickoff with timed entry beginning at 10 a.m. with guided tours in and around the SPAC grounds, which will be transformed into a festive celebration inspired by the theme, “Metamorphosis.” Each guided

experience is approximately 100 minutes and includes a one-mile tour. Highlighting the event are performances by Empire State Youth Orchestra, presenting classical works as well as a premiere of an original composition from student composer David Morelli; a special collaborative performance by Schenectady High School Dance Connection and Pilobolus around the Spa State Park reflecting pool; and additional presentations by Capital District Youth Chorale, Capital District Youth Pipe Band, and Northeast Ballet Company.

CATSKILL — Upstate Diary, a niche publication featuring creative lifestyles close to nature, presents an art and design exhibition, ART+NATURE+HOME. The online and brick & mortar show, highlighting work by some of the magazine’s favorite rurally based visionaries, will be on view from May 29 through June 13 in Catskill.

ART+NATURE+HOME will feature furniture, design, functional sculpture, and art — all created from natural materials such as wood, clay, wool, and stone. Many of the objects are created exclusively for the exhibition by a select group of inspiring artists and artisans including: Jeremy Anderson, Paula Greif, Paula Hayes, Kat Howard, Christina Kruse, Kieran Kinsella, Jonathan Kline, Christopher Kurtz, Re Jin Lee, Chris Lehrecke, Jonah Meyer, Jason Middlebrook, JohnPaul Philippe, Martin Puryear, Kentaro Takashina, Nicola Tyson, Joshua Vogel, and Nadia Yaron.

BENNINGTON COLLEGE RECEIVES DONATION OF 500 WORKS OF CONTEMPORARY ART – AUCTION JUNE 2 BENNINGTON, VT — Bennington College has received a gift of 500 works of art to benefit Art for Access, an innovative fundraising program launched in 2018.

Art for Access goal is to expand and enhance art holdings for teaching, enrichment, and enjoyment and to raise funds for scholarships through the sale of art.

The gifted works — including prints, photographs, paintings, drawings, sculpture — are from the collection of noted art patron and curator Melva Bucksbaum (1933-2015).

The gift includes works by emerging and established artists from across the globe, including John Bankston, William Copley, Enrique Martínez Celaya, Douglas Gordon, Sabine Hornig, Virginia Lavado, Rosa Loy, Raul Martinez,

Tracy Moffat, Aurie Ramirez, and Sandra Vásquez de la Horra, among many others. Approximately half of the works donated will be used both for teaching (Usdan Gallery curator and director Anne Thompson is teaching from some of the works in her Spring 2021 multiples class) and enrichment of the campus and the community (some 100 works are being placed in buildings throughout campus).

Through a partnership with Stair in Hudson, NY, a leading regional auction house in the Northeast, some 250 works from this donation will be sold in a single-sale auction on Wednesday, June 2 to benefit Art for Access.

JMJC Claim 5 National Titles

ARI BERLINER RENO, NV — Athletes from the Glenville, NY based Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) enjoyed phenomenal results at the US Senior Nationals, May 15, 2021, winning 11 total medals including 5 gold at the RenoSparks Convention Center.

Ari Berliner (22) went 4-0 on the day to win his first National title at 66kg. Melissa Myers (25) also went 4-0 as she captured her maiden National championship winning the 70k division. Nicole Stout (23) was the third JMJC athlete to claim their first National title as she posted a 3-0 record, winning all of her matches by ippon (full point) in the 78kg weight class.

Iain Berliner (17) was a surprise finalist taking a silver medal in the 60kg category, while JMJC teammate Zach Judy (28) placed third in the same division. This is Berliner’s and Judy’s first medal at nationals. Iain competed later in

the 60kg brown belt division and went 3-0 to take gold.

Yusef Houssni (18) was a double medalist as well, winning a silver in the 73kg division, then dominated in the 73kg U21 category to capture a gold.

Veteran, Tony Sangimino (31) picked up a silver medal in the 81kg weight class, losing only in the final in an overtime thriller.

Sangimino now resides in San Francisco where he trains boxers as well as MMA fighters.

Kell Berliner (26) was fighting up a weight class and captured the bronze in the 90kg division.

Victoria Ferrante (23) closed out the JMJC medal count, picking up a bronze in the 63kg brown belt division.

The JMJC has now produced an impressive 133 medalists and 41 champions at the US Senior Nationals in its 20-year history.

Youth Intermediate Volleyball (ages 10-14 years old)

Mini Active Kids Club (ages 2-3 years old)

This is a co-ed program where the focus is on fundamentals and the basics of volleyball. Setting, bumping, positioning, and different strategies will be practiced.

Participants will experience a variety of games and activities in a small group setting to help get all their energy out! Parents are encouraged to participate.

The program takes place on Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. at the Saratoga Branch field until June 9. The cost is $60 for members and $90 for non-members.

Youth Advance Volleyball (ages 12-16 years old) This is a co-ed program where the focus is on game play and advanced skills such as tips, blocks, internet play, and spiking. The YMCA reserves the right to evaluate and switch participants to the beginner class if they do not have successful basic over-thenet play.

“Share A Step” The Wesley Foundation to Host Fitness Fundraiser

Congrats to this week’s Athlete of the Week – Lillian Bergbom!

Lillian is a sophomore at Saratoga Springs High School. She began skating at age 6, and trains all year round. She has been competing on a Synchronized Skating Team for 9 years. In addition, she trains in freestyle and ice dancing. Lily recently became a US Figure Skating triple gold medalist, earning this distinction in Moves in the Field, Ice Dance, and Solo Free Dance. This achievement is accomplished by a very small number of skaters nationally each year.

Having now earned the highest levels in US figure skating, Lily is working on her International Dances and Canadian Gold Medal in Ice Dancing.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wesley Foundation hosts a “Share A Step” virtual fundraiser from Friday, May 21 through Thursday, May 27.

The weeklong fitness initiative offers participants the opportunity to raise funds for The Wesley Community while working towards a fitnessoriented goal, such as running or walking one mile per day or completing a 30-mile bike ride.

Members track their workouts, share their progress on social media and encourage friends and family to support their efforts via a donation. Teams and individuals are welcome to participate and prizes are awarded for goals achieved during the event.

All donations generated through “Share A Step” will support the second phase of renovations atw the Springs Building of Wesley Health Care Center. The project will create a contemporary, efficient and home-like environment on the building’s second, third and fourth floors. Phase one of the project was completed in 2016.

When Lily isn’t on the ice, she is rowing with the Saratoga Rowing Association. Last year, she joined the rowing team and has begun competing in regattas.

She has been on the high honor roll every semester.
