by Jaynie Ellis Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs City School District could be reducing their number of voting locations from six to two in the very near future.

During the June 10 Board of Education meeting, District Superintendent Michael Patton initiated the discussion to consolidate the number of polling locations in the district. Currently there are six – one at each

elementrary school. The school district would like to reduce to just two locations for in-person voting – one at the middle school and one at the high school.

The “Ultimate” Sport

by Jaynie Ellis Saratoga TODAY LOS GATOS, CA — The American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) kicked off their 10th season on June 4. They are diving into digital currency and have some other exciting new announcements as they take the forefront in modernizing the sports entertainment industry.

The AUDL is the only professional Ultimate sports league in North America, with 22 teams in four divisions across the U.S. and Canada. Each team competes in a 12-game regular season schedule, with top teams entering a playoff round and divisional winners advancing to a final four style Championship Weekend.

A

lthough no trace remains today, the Glen Paper Collar Company was a visible presence in Ballston Spa 150 years ago. It was located in the famous Blue Mill building on the north side of Milton Avenue, built as one of the area’s first grist mills. Many may have heard of the collar company, which was one of the largest of its kind in the country. But few know that the company’s owners, Horace Medbery and Henry Mann, were also prolific inventors.

Horace Medbery was the son of Stephen and Sarah Medbery, proprietors of the hotel in Ballston Spa which still bears their name. He was one of those rare individuals who was able to put his inventions to practical use in his various business ventures in Ballston Spa, Mechanicville, and elsewhere. Henry Mann was the son of Henry Mann Sr., a prominent local businessman and Saratoga County treasurer. The Mann family lived in the former Aldridge’s Hotel, now the home of Brookside Museum, just down the street from The Medbery Hotel. Horace and Henry were neighbors while growing up in the village.

During the 1870s, a peculiar clothing fad swept the country.

Disposable cotton-based paper collars were introduced to the upper classes as a way of maintaining a fresh, white collar rather than attempting to clean soiled cloth collars. Some of the first paper collars in the country were manufactured two miles north of Ballston by Lindley Murray Crane, a paper mill owner and holder of three patents. Henry Mann’s father also manufactured paper collar materials in nearby Factory Village for some years under the partnership of Mann & Laflin.

Horace and Henry recognized their business opportunity even before the fad hit its peak, and rented space at the Blue Mill to establish the Glen Paper Collar Company. In their first year, the partnership produced nine million collars. Profits were poured back into the business by purchasing the glazing works of Rand & Edwards located below them in the Blue Mill. Soon they occupied the entire building, so in 1871 they were forced to build a five-story, 60 foot by 40 foot addition, reportedly constructed in

twenty days. They rented the old Waverly Hall for use as a packing station and salesroom.

Shipments of collars increased year after year. At its height in 1875, the factory was producing 21 million paper collars and five million paper cuffs per year and employed 150 people.

At this time, Medbery submitted his first of many patents. He, along with Henry Mann and Simeon Drake, perfected a new steam drying wheel for use in the collar factory. The machine was developed, as the partners put it, “after much study and reflection, and expenditure of money in purchasing machinery which did not meet our wants.”

On the same day as the drying wheel patent was filed, Medbery submitted an improvement for cutting paper collars, the object of which was to rapidly cut collars from long rolls of cloth-faced paper by passing it between two rollers. One of Ballston’s more unusual inventions was developed by Henry Mann, who patented a shipping box for paper collars that could be converted into an ornamental lampshade.

The three patents listed above would be the only inventions that related to the Glen Paper Collar Company.

Despite becoming one of the largest paper collar companies in the world, the fad died out in the mid-1870s, forcing the partners to shut down the collar factory. Henry Mann went on to invent and patent an envelope-making machine. Local inventor Samuel Day constructed nine of the machines which were set up in the Blue Mill. The Mann Envelope Company operated for several years before closing down for unknown reasons.

In 1879 Horace Medbery moved to Mechanicville and rented the Howland Paper Mill, operating it for three years before organizing the Hudson River Water Power & Paper Company. He erected an 800 foot-long dam across the Hudson River using an estimated 3.5 million bricks. In this endeavor, Medbery is credited with establishing a valuable new industry for the city. Other businessmen noticed the success of his project, and soon permanent brick yards were established such as the Mechanicville Brick Company and the Best Brick Company.

For the next four years, Medbery acted as secretary and general manager of the paper mill. During that time, he patented two machines for molding tubes from paper pulp. In 1891 he patented a conduit for underground trolley wire using material that he claimed was water-proof, gas-proof, and “practically indestructible.” Later that year he submitted a patent for a pailmaking machine, which manufactured pails using paper pulp. There is a reference in Sylvester’s History of Saratoga County that the Glen Paper Collar Company produced and sold these pails, so this patent is very likely based on that endeavor.

Over the next few years Medbery put several more of his inventions to good use. In 1892 he established the Fiberite Company, which manufactured fiber pipes for interior conduits used to wire buildings.

The technology he developed in his seamless tube patents no doubt was applied to this line of work. He also began producing fiber pails using his pail-making machine, and later developed a substitute for hard rubber and celluloid. Medbery will go down in history as possessing more 19th century patents than any other Ballston native.

A. I opened my store on December 23.

Q. Do you have a background in business – what were you doing before opening your business?

A. I do not have a background in business.

I was actually teaching Criminal Justice at Hudson Valley Community College.

Q. Why did you decide to open the store?

A. Covid caused me to be home [working and taking care of her kids]. It was a pain having to drive to Albany for hair products, so I decided to open up a store in this area.

Q. What are some products that you sell?

A. Wigs, braiding, dyes, shampoos, conditioners, etc. for ethnic hair. I also sell books with a black or brown character on the cover that teach embracing differences, loving your skin, and some even tackle racism.

Q. What is the “Empowerment Blackboard”?

A. I wanted kids that come into the store to feel empowered. Younger kids scribble on it, but I have the older kids write what they like about themselves on the board and get their picture taken. Sometimes they pick out a book with a character on the front cover that looks like them and have their picture taken with the book.

Q. What advice would you give to women like yourself who want to open their own business?

A. Go for it. I am still learning a lot. There are ups and downs, but try not to let the downs break your spirit because there will always be an up day to follow.

Interested in learning more about the importance of hair in black culture? Stefanie recommends checking out the documentary Good Hair with Chris Rock on Netflix. She says that having “good hair” shouldn’t mean a specific style – it is whatever “good hair” means to you.

Q. What advice would you give to women struggling with embracing their natural hair?

A. In 2021 more women are rocking their natural hair – just try it out. It’s beautiful, and we should embrace it. I’m no longer ashamed of it.

She received her B.S. from New England College in 1977. She worked as an R.N. in the Boston area and around Dover, NH. She retired in 1991 after working at the State Hospital in Concord, NH. She spent many happy years raising her family, nurturing their interests in cooking, gardening, fiber arts, reading, and natural history. For many years she volunteered with the Yaddo Garden Society. She also enjoyed traveling, especially her multiple visits to Scotland and Italy.

She is survived by her daughter, Reed Sutherland (Thompson

Herrick), also of Saratoga Springs, by her son, Hunt Adams Sutherland (Margery Tyrrell) of Nelson, British Columbia, and by her sister, Mellicent Hawke (Bill Hawke) of Essex, CT. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Ian Kingsbury Sutherland, and by her husband, David A. Sutherland.

COURT Coleen R. Riley, 32, of Clifton Park, was sentenced June 9 to five years of probation, after pleading to felony burglary in the third-degree.

Louis S. Guerra, 46, of the Bronx, pleaded June 9 to criminal contempt in the first-degree, and aggravated family offense – both felonies, in connection with allegations first charged in June 2020 in Saratoga Springs. Sentencing Sept. 22.

Zachary Gaspie, 20, of Mechanicville, pleaded June 9 to possessing a sexual performance by a child, a felony.

Sentencing Aug. 11.

Jeremy M. Depasquale, was sentenced June 9 to 1.5 to 3 years in state priosn, after pleading to attempted burglary in the third-degree, a felony, in Saratoga Springs first charged December 2020.

Keith A. Meader, 49, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced June 2 to

five years of probation, after pleading to criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth-degree.

POLICE Matthew E. Scoons, 43, of Malta, was charged June 7 with two felony counts of assault in the second-degree, one felony count of criminal mischief in the third-degree, two counts of obstructing governmental administration, and resisting arrest. Scoons is accused of shoving another person to the ground, breaking their wrist in the process. He is also accused of shattering a glass door by punching it and of causing physical injury to one of the deputies who was attempting to take him into custody, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department.

Adam Humphrey, 29, of Mayfield, was charged June 4 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Thomas J. Jaronski, 69, of Ballston Spa, was charged June 10 with felony grand larceny. Jaronski is accused of stealing more than $200,000 from his place of employment in Moreau through a fraudulent ongoing plan between September 2012 and May 2021, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office. He is expected to be in Moreau Town Court July 6.

Randy Jones, 53, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 5 with disorderly conduct.

Justin Diamond, 25, of Ballston Spa, was charged June 4 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, misdemeanor aggravated DWI, and a vehicle equipment violation.

James Garafolo, 27, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 5 with criminal mischief in the third-degree, a felony.

Ashley Jubrey, 33, of Mechanicville, was charged June 3 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and an equipment violation.

Jonathan Emery, 29, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 4 with DWAI – with a prior conviction in the past 10 years rising to a felony, and failure to obey a traffic control device.

Kelly Irish, 29, of Malta, was charged June 5 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, misdemeanor aggravated DWI, refusal to take a breath test, moving from lane unsafely, and a license plate violation.

James Everett, 63, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 5 with DWI, aggravated DWI, and moving from lane unsafely.

Stephen Chindamo, 58, of Saratoga Springs, was charged June 6 with a false written statement, a misdemeanor.

Anderson Vargas, 29, of Clifton Park, was charged June 6 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

David Hunt, 27, of Rensselaer, was charged June 6 in Saratoga Springs with disorderly conduct.

Nikihya Williams, 36, of Troy, was charged June 6 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and an equipment violation.

Thomas L. McDermott, 53, of Wilton was charged June 3 with aggravated harassment in the first-degree, a felony.

The charges follow a twomonth investigation into a report of a bias-related incident that occurred on a construction site in the town of Rotterdam. The incident was reported by an employee at the construction site and immediately reported to state police by an onsite supervisor. McDermott is accused of using construction materials to assemble a small figure resembling a person of color, which he then hung with a noose made of twine, according to state police.

Over 300 Classic Cars To Be On Display in Saratoga Spa State Park SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) has announced their 2021 Eastern Spring Nationals to be held from Thursday, June 17 through Saturday, June 19 in Saratoga Springs.

The 2021 Eastern Spring Nationals brings AACA members from around the country to Saratoga Springs for the first time.

“The AACA is excited to be in Saratoga Springs for the first time in our 87-year history. The world’s largest antique car club has over 300 regions and chapters worldwide and we are so pleased that one of our newest regions, Saratoga Region AACA tackled bringing us to the area,” said AACA CEO Steve Moskowitz, “We thank them, as well as we thank all the magnificent help and support from the Saratoga Automobile Museum. It has been a great partnership of people dedicated to preserving history and sharing it with others.”

The automotive show field will be open, at no charge, to the public on Saturday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the Saratoga Spa State Park. There will be food trucks on-site as well for spectators.

“The Museum is excited and proud to welcome the AACA to Saratoga Springs for the first time in their history,” said Carly Connors, executive director, “the AACA weekend should prove to be a wonderful time of celebration after a challenging year. We are positive this event will also help to bring new generations of collectors and enthusiasts into the automotive hobby.”

The Museum is located within Saratoga Spa State Park, adjacent to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Hall of Springs.

celebrate the 202nd anniversary of Abner Doubleday’s birth in Ballston Spa. A commission once determined that Doubleday invented the game of baseball, but if he made any contribution at all to America’s pastime, it probably was minimal.

Apart from that, Doubleday had a most interesting life, including service in the U.S Army at the absolute beginning of the Civil War. During the course of the war, he attained the rank of Major General.

Fiske will also explain the intriguing origins of the “Doubleday invented baseball” story.

Story Walk GALWAY ­ — The Galway Public Library has announced the opening of their new Story Walk.

Visit the The Galway Public Library at 2112 East St. in Galway and proceed to the back of the library where you will see a sign marking the start of the Story Walk.

Pages of a book are posted on signs along an easy to walk trail. The trail is ideal for families and promotes both literacy, exercise, and outdoor recreation. The current book that is posted is The Keeper of Wild Words by Brooke Smith and illustrated by Madeline Kloepper.

“Share A Step” Virtual Fitness Fundraiser Raises More Than $100,000 For The Wesley Foundation SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wesley Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Wesley Community, raised $104,300 to support local seniors served by The Wesley Community at its “Share A Step” virtual fundraiser.

Approximately 100 community members – double the number from last year - participated in the 2021 edition of “Share A Step,” which took place from May 21 through May 27 and invited community members to work towards a fitness-oriented goal while raising

funds. Participants this year logged more than 1,470 miles and helped bring the total amount raised for The Wesley Foundation via the annual fundraiser to more than $140,000 since it began in 2018.

Donations received via the virtual fundraiser will support the second phase of renovations at the Springs Building of Wesley Health Care Center. The project will create a contemporary, efficient and home-like environment on the Springs Building’s second, third and fourth floors. Phase one

of the project was completed in 2016. The Wesley Community is a non-profit senior living campus in Saratoga Springs with more than 700 residents.

The Wesley Community is a 37-acre, non-profit agency in Saratoga Springs that provides independent and assisted living for seniors, affordable independent senior housing, short-term rehabilitation and long-term care, as well as home care services and outpatient therapies available for people of all ages.

Capital Region Heart Walk Raises Nearly $500K Fundraising to Fight Heart Disease and Stroke through June 30 ALBANY — Walkers and runners participated in the 2021 Capital Region Heart Walk and Run, a digital event earlier this month that continued the fight against heart disease and stroke, that raised more than $489,000.

People can donate until June 30 at CapitalRegionHeartWalk.org.

“The pandemic created the exact kind of situations that exacerbate heart disease and stroke – many of us were more sedentary, we may have gained a little weight, and we faced new stresses as we combined working from home

Aedan Conway of Delmar, the Heart Hero for this year’s Capital Region Heart Walk and Run, was born with hypoplastic left heart

syndrome, which, in his case, meant that one of his heart ventricles didn’t develop properly. Aedan has had three open-heart surgeries.

In Clifton Park, Braden Russom and his family walked at Clifton Park Commons in Clifton Park. Russom, 40, is the Stroke Ambassador to the Capital Region Heart Walk and Run this year. He has had four strokes since he was in college. Last year, he had surgery to repair the hole in his heart suspected of causing the strokes. Russom’s wife and daughters, who are 4 and 7, live with Long QT Syndrome.

“Passing this legislation is tremendously important for Saratoga County” -

State Lawmakers Pass The New York State 250th Commemoration Act ALBANY — In the final week of legislative session both the state Senate and Assembly unanimously passed the New York State 250th Commemoration Act. Sponsored by Assemblymember Carrie Woerner and Sen. Shelley B. Mayer, the act is part of a national effort to commemorate the founding of the United States.

When enacted, this legislation will create the New York State 250th Commemoration Commission to develop a plan to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and establish the 250th Commemoration

Commission Fund.

“Passing this legislation is tremendously important for Saratoga County,” said Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts.

“The most internationally significant historical event to ever happen within our borders was the surrender of Burgoyne's Army after the Battles of Saratoga, the Turning Point of the American Revolution. The creation of the NYS 250th Commission will aid local historians and historical sites in commemorating these important events. These types of anniversaries often bring our

past to the present, encouraging the public to become engaged with our history and celebrate our sense of place.”

A 13-member commission will be co-chaired by the Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Commissioner of the Department of Education, or their designees, and include the New York State Historian as well as stakeholders from across the state with knowledge of history, historic preservation and tourism. They will support and facilitate local efforts by heritage organization, municipalities and others in commemorative planning and programs.

There will be a focus on the narratives and ensuing struggles of women, people of African descent and indigenous people, whose freedoms and rights during the revolution were far from complete.

The fund’s creation is essential for the state to be eligible to receive funds from the federal Semiquincentennial Commission, created in 2016, and the America250 Foundation, the official nonprofit partner and operational arm of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission.

“With this legislation, New York State will have the framework to plan programs and projects that will recognize the birth of this nation nearly 250 years ago. These benchmarks in time are occasions to celebrate but also to contemplate the enormity of our mutual undertaking to form and nurture a nation that is utterly unique,” said Assemblymember Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake.

“We can lead the way in this national celebration as New York is emblematic of the diversity of the American experience,

encompassing indigenous American nations, the sites of several pivotal events in the birth of the nation, abolitionists and the underground railroad, the crucible of woman’s suffrage, urban immigrants, and generational custodians of farmland, vineyards, and orchards.”

The legislation includes a commitment to economic development through active support for heritage tourism and other local business initiatives, thus generating tax revenues and supporting the local taxpayers.

Gov. Cuomo: State Mandated COVID Restrictions Lifted

ALBANY — On Tuesday June 15, Day 472 since the state began counting COVID-19 infections, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the state was lifting state-mandated pandemic restrictions “effective immediately.”

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga Springs City Center saw a revenue decline of $1.6 million during the past 15 months as a result of the pandemic.

In a letter sent by former and current members of the City Center Authority leadership to the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors this week, the City Center, which has been largely closed since March 2020, saw a reduction in earned revenue from the rental of its facility of just over $900,000 following the implementation of state protocols limiting the size of indoor events.

Additionally, the venue saw a drop of nearly $700,000 in its share of city and county occupancy tax revenue, compared to the previous year.

The letter requests the Board of Supervisors consider using a portion of American Rescue Plan Recovery Funds allocated to the county to help the City Center recover from the losses experienced due to the pandemic.

The letter, dated June 1, was read during the Board of Supervisors monthly meeting on June 15.

New York State which once counted the highest infection rate in the nation, is today the lowest, the governor said during his presser Tuesday: “We had people dying of COVID before we had even known COVID was here,” Cuomo said. “(Today) New Yorkers have accomplished what seemed impossible on Day 1.”

As a state, New York this

week achieved a 70% vaccination rate of the 18-and-over population having at least one shot.

Overall, that counts as just over 55% of the population having at least one shot and approximately half the state’s population of about 19 million residents having completed the vaccine series.

The highest vaccinated region is Long Island – which counts 75.3%

over-18 residents as having had at least one shot. The greater Capital Region had the second highest at 74.4%. The lowest rates of vaccination are in the North Country and Mohawk Valley regions – at 63.9% and 60.6%, respectively.

The lifted state-mandated restrictions apply to both commercial and social settings – such as malls, movie theaters, offices, sports

and arts and entertainment activities, and specifies lifted restrictions on previously mandated social gathering, social distancing and capacity limits, as well as cleaning protocols and securing contact information for tracing purposes.

As per the CDC, mask requirements remain in effect for pre-k-12 schools, public transport, and healthcare screenings.

American Rescue Plan Status of Capital Region Funding Allocation

SARATOGA SPRINGS — As part of the latest round of stimulus funding, the American Rescue Plan provided direct funding to states, counties, and municipalities across the county.

For New York State, there was a total of $360 billion in funding secured. Of that total, $6.14 billion was reserved for relief to metropolitan cities, $3.9 billion for counties and $825 million was reserved for smaller cities, towns, and villages.

The Capital Region counties of Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga received a combined $165 million in funding and the respective cities, towns, and villages of the region received a combined $263.16 million in funding.

The funding can be used for a number of uses by state and local governments including Costs associated with responding to COVID-19; Support workers performing essential work during COVID-19; Cover revenue losses caused by COVID-19; Make necessary investments in water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure, according to The Capital District Regional Planning Commission.

CDRPC is a regional planning

and resource center, established pursuant to New York State General Municipal Law, serving Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties.

States and local governments cannot use the stimulus funding to cover the cost of pensions or to offset a reduction in taxes.

The specific breakdown for Saratoga County in total is $74.4 million, with Saratoga County receiving $44.58 million and the municipalities receiving $29.82 million, according to CDRPC. Saratoga County’s municipalities saw the lowest overall allocation of the four counties. The city of Saratoga Springs saw the highest allocation with $7.7 million in funding. Clifton Park received the second most funding allocations with $3.99 million in funding followed by Halfmoon with $2.7 million. The Towns of Milton and Wilton received $2.12 million and $1.86 million, respectively. Malta, Moreau, and the Town of Ballston received $1.78, $1.7, and $1.26 million respectively.

The city of Saratoga Springs has received half its $7.7 million funding, with the balance assumed to be received next year, city Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan said.

City Holds Open House June 24 for $1.5 Million Missing Sidewalk Links Project SARATOGA SPRINGS — The city will host the first Missing Sidewalk Links Open House 3 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 24 at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center, 15 Vanderbilt Ave. The Missing Sidewalk Links Program aims to help the city achieve a goal of better joining downtown and neighborhoods.

Missing Sidewalk Links prioritizes the construction of missing sidewalk segments that lie within a one-mile radius of the city’s urban core. This one-mile radius was determined as a high priority because of its high concentration of schools, parks, businesses,

public facilities, public transportation stops, medical facilities, and residences.

The locations were selected utilizing the “Pedestrian Networks and Facilities” chapter in the City of Saratoga Springs 2016 Complete Streets Plan as well as coordination with the Department of Public Works. The sidewalks will be built in the city right-of-way or existing highway boundary. Locations of the sidewalks will be determined by survey and designed by engineers.

Following this public outreach and informational period, the scheduled timeline calls for

final design in the fall, and construction next spring and summer.

The project is funded by a $1.52 million grant through the 2019-2024 Federal Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).

Federal funding provides 80% of the funding with the city providing 20% - roughly $380,000.

Barton and Loguidice, an engineering firm, has been hired by the city to provide preliminary and final design services.

Interested residents and property owners are invited to stop in during the Open House to meet city staff and learn more about the project.

Woerner Bill To Expand Protections for Volunteer Firefighters Passes Assembly SARATOGA COUNTY — Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake, announced a bill she sponsored to ensure more volunteer firefighters qualify for disability and death benefits passed the Assembly and the Senate. Her legislation will soon be sent to the governor.

“Volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line to protect

us without any compensation for their service,” said Woerner, in a statement. “These brave men and women are heroes, and they shouldn’t have to worry about covering the costs of medical expenses because their insurance denied them. This not only causes distress for their families, but also unnecessarily increases litigation costs and delays the payment of

qualifying benefits to volunteer firefighters injured while protecting their communities.”

Woerner’s bill ensures volunteer firefighters who suffer a vascular rupture related to official duties and activities that causes death or disability are covered under the Volunteer Firefighter's Benefits Law (VFBL) (A.6767-A).

While these types of injuries are generally covered under the VBFL, certain insurers fight these claims and assert that injuries are unrelated to their service, Woerner said. The new bill, called the Chief James Brooks Jr. Act, will provide presumptive coverage for vascular ruptures similar to the coverage for heart attacks.

The bill was inspired by Chief James Brooks Jr., who was a member of the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company for 20 years and served as an assistant chief. James Brooks Jr. died in September after tearing an artery while responding to a structure fire in Dresden four months earlier. He was taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center and later flown to University of Vermont Medical Center, where he suffered a series of debilitating strokes during a surgery to repair the damaged valve. Brooks, who was 45 when he died, had his workers’ compensation claim denied despite state law requiring Washington County to cover expenses.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Race Course will open all sections at 100 percent capacity, the New York Racing Association announced June 16. The update was made one day after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the immediate removal of COVID19 protocols and restrictions for nearly all activities as the benchmark was met of 70 percent of adult New Yorkers receiving at least one shot of the vaccine.

At the racecourse, the lifting of all COVID-19 protocols includes the requirement for fans to provide vaccination status, and applies to all hospitality areas and venues within the facility,

including the popular Saratoga backyard, 1863 Club and The Stretch. Season admission passes, which provide access to the backyard, will be available for purchase and use without the prior requirement that fans provide proof of vaccination status.

The overall capacity at Saratoga Race Course is approximately 50,000. Non-vaccinated individuals will be required to wear a facial covering during their day at Saratoga Race Course, in accordance with CDC guidance.

attendance, ran the entirety of the Saratoga race meet in 2020 without spectators in attendance – but uninterrupted, without any cases of COVID-19 on the backstretch, among employees or vendors,” said Patrick McKenna, NYRA’s director of communications.

“Being able to welcome fans back to Belmont on May 3, for the first time in 552 days at Belmont, was exciting and in some ways emotional – because of what everyone has been through.

Thankfully now, we are turning the page on the pandemic with the rise of vaccinations, with the easing of restrictions that recognizes the incredibly powerful protections provided by these vaccinations,” McKenna said.

“On July 15, there will be a very special moment when we open those gates and the crowd comes through at Saratoga. We’re really looking forward to what should be a spectacular summer of thoroughbred racing here.”

The New York Racing Association hosted a job fair last weekend and aims to hire about 2,350 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers for the 2021 Saratoga Race Course summer meet. It is a hiring number NYRA expects to meet.

“We have a large percentage of seasonal employees return year-after-year – some for decades, said McKenna, who was at the racecourse for the first day of the job fair, on June 11.

“We went on sale with tickets (last week) and saw an unprecedented response in terms of tickets sold. The enthusiasm and the energy we’re seeing that is running through this community is significant in ways that frankly we’ve not seen before, so we’re optimistic that will carry over in the hiring.”

NYRA was fully staffed for last week’s Belmont Stakes where 11,000 fans were in attendance, and the hiring process downstate went smoothly, he added.

“Saratoga is a wonderful place for seasonal employment, and we remain optimistic we will see the same level of hiring we’ve been accustomed to. These are goodpaying jobs for young people and for those who may be looking for seasonal work and it’s an incredibly exciting and dynamic place to work,” McKenna said.

The number of employees sought this summer is similar to the number generally hired at the racecourse in pre-pandemic times, he added.

“I will be moving on to a new opportunity that will allow me to grow personally and professionally but I will miss the incredible people and businesses I have had the pleasure of working with here in Saratoga County over the past 21 years. Schneider was appointment President and CEO of the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership in February 2020, after serving as Director of Business Retention and Expansion, and as Vice President of the organization, which she joined in 2016.

Previously, she spent 13 years at the Saratoga Economic Development Corporation as a member of the economic development team that brought GLOBALFOUNDRIES to Saratoga County.

The Prosperity Partnership is a Saratoga County-based economic development organization.

The mission of the organization is to secure sustainable jobs and capital investment by attracting new business to Saratoga County, and retaining existing businesses by assisting them to grow.

Local Small Business Icon Retires SARATOGA SPRINGS — More than a thousand small businesses have been started north of the Mohawk because of Bill Edwards and the regional SCORE team he built starting in 2005.

Starting with a single office provided by the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce in Glens Falls, Edward’s team grew to 30 counselors in four offices.

After being Senior Financial Officer for HP Hood Dairy and International Corporate Vice President and Regional Director for Arthur D. Little, one of the world’s largest consulting firms, Edwards became a college teacher and was selected as the Harder professor of business and management at Skidmore, where he regularly received rave reviews from his students.

Retiring for the second time in 2005, Bill became a volunteer with SCORE, which is a national notfor-profit partner of the U. S. Small Business Administration dedicated to helping small business owners form and grow their businesses.

Edward’s third retirement comes after a banner 2020. Using Zoom, his team spent more than 6,000 hours and helped start or expand 117 businesses, creating 236 new jobs. No Easy Solutions for Local Labor Shortage

Todd Shimkus, President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce Visit www.saratoga.org and click “Job Zone.” It’s possible we’ve never had as many job openings posted on this exclusively local online job portal since it was first created.

Just among the recent posts, we have local employers looking for cooks, tellers, pre-school teachers, laborers, hotel front desk attendant, security officer, and loan processor. Dig a little deeper, you’ll full-time positions available as branch managers, business analyst, certified nursing assistant, machine operator, carpenter, director of data management, electronics tester, fashion stylist, family advocate, immigration services specialist, landscape architect, news producer, planner, veterinary assistant, warehouse worker, and welder. Right now, every sector in our local economy is struggling with open jobs that can’t be filled.

Some suggest the labor shortage is being caused by the Federal government’s $300 weekly

unemployment bonus. There have been calls for this bonus to be discontinued. It is set to expire in September. I certainly know a few people who are staying home versus returning to work because of this bonus. I also know others who need this support because of childcare issues and schoolaged children who still have not returned to school full-time.

The reality is that Saratoga County had a labor shortage before the pandemic. At the time, our unemployment rate was about 3.5%. Now it is 4.4%.

Then, there were approximately 4,000 people who qualified for unemployment benefits. Now there are just over 5,000. Even if all 1,000 of the “new” individuals on unemployment came back to work, we’d still have a labor shortage. Getting people on unemployment back to work will help. It won’t solve the problem.

I believe there are larger demographic forces at play.

Locally, we have an aging population. During the pandemic, the percentage of people over 65 who decided to retire started to increase. The stock market helped many of them immensely in the last decade. Even after the bottom fell out last March, the market rebounded and retirement investments continued to increase in value. Those 65 and over were also more susceptible to the virus.

So some made the choice to retire for health and safety reasons.

On the other end of the

spectrum, we’re not having as many kids as we once did. This isn’t hurting us today but it will soon. The younger generation now in high school and college has also stayed away from working more so than prior generations.

Roughly twenty years ago, more than 70% of this cohort worked.

Today, that percentage is down to nearly 40%. During the pandemic, some parents kept their children at home versus encouraging them to take a front-facing job where they might be at risk.

Our immigration system is broken. It’s been broken for decades. The US Chamber of Commerce has been a leading advocate for immigration reform because of the labor shortage.

Once again, immigration reform won’t solve the problem. But if done thoughtfully, it can help the hospitality, technology, agricultural, construction and healthcare sectors.

The Chamber is doing what we can to help. Any employer in Saratoga County can post open jobs for free on the Job Zone.

This was once a members-only benefit. We realize everyone needs our help now. That’s why we made the change. We’ve also created a Saratoga County Help Wanted promotional campaign.

For as little as $100, we’ll do a mini-social media campaign to promote your local job openings.

This is helping but it won’t solve the labor shortage.

We’re seeing local employers

increasing starting wages. Some have bonus programs if you get a friend to apply or if you stay for a certain period of time. We’re seeing flexible hours and work from home options. Employers are hosting their own drive-up job fairs. Some are providing transportation to and from work or partnering with CDTA. We’re also seeing businesses automate.

You can see this every time you exit a big box retailer and there are more self-checkout lines than staffed ones. And small business

owners are just working more hours themselves.

I feel particularly bad for our locally owned small businesses.

This summer as we return to normal, it’s likely many of them will be understaffed. This is where you can help. Be kind to these businesses and their employees.

It may take them a little longer to serve or to help you. Have some patience. Be respectful.

Remember that those who are working will likely be working harder than ever before.

Superintendent Patton gave four reasons as to why this consolidation would be preferable for the district and its residents.

The first reason being that reducing the number of voting sites could save the district $5,000 to $6,000 annually. Secondly, other neighboring district have already made a consildation like this and are operating smoothly. Under the third reason of increased efficiency, Superintendent Patton states that it would clear up confusion for voters who are unsure of what

elementary school to vote at, support for voters with questions or in need of help would be better, and that they could provide faster election results. The fourth reason, was over safety concerns with polling places being at the elementrary schools.

The Saratoga Springs School District is spread out over a 100 mile radius. Reducing the number of voting locations could be inconvenient for those who live in the areas of Geyser Crest, Saratoga Lake/Eastern Plateau, Greenfield, Ballston Spa/Milton, and parts of Wilton.

DAR Essay and Junior American Citizen Winners

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) awarded certificates and checks to winners of the New York State DAR Flag Essay Contest, the American History Essay Contest, and Junior American Citizen Contest.

The Flag Essay Contest theme was “What the Flag of the United Stated of America Means to Me” and was eligible for any student in the fifth and sixth grade and attending public, private, parochial schools or those who are home schooled to enter.

This year the chapter had over 60 essays entered. The winner was Meghan Kempf, second place went to Hudson Bauer, and third place went to Gabriela Schwartz.

The American History Essay Contest theme was “The Boston Massacre” and was eligible for any

student in fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in public, private, parochial schools or those who are home schooled to enter.

The winner was Conor Reilly.

The Junior American Citizens (JAC) is a community service project. The JAC contest is open to all pre-school through 12th grade students in public, private, and parochial schools, and in sanctioned home study programs in the categories: gifted, general, and special needs. The winners collected food for people needing assistance. Each received a check, a Junior American Citizen Certificate, and a small goody bag. Co-winners were Sakthi and Surya Muthukrishnan. The co-winners read a short note to the members, thanking them for awarding them first place.

“We are honored to recognize these talented students with their

creative writing skills and doing community service,” said Chapter Regent Martha Chromik.

The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1890, is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Today’s DAR has over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR members annually provide millions of hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

eekend farmers’ markets are a great way to unwind from the week, spend time with family and friends, and stock your fridge for the week ahead. But there’s no need to wait until the weekend to do this - the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s midweek market, rain or shine, on Wednesdays, 3-6 pm, offers a way to get the freshest foods - usually picked off the land the day before or even that morning.

This year’s return of the midweek market to downtown Saratoga in High Rock Park offers a more intimate, slower-paced alternative to the Saturday markets. Product offerings include fresh produce, plants and flowers, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, tool sharpening services, and more.

Vendors appreciate the market’s different characteristics. “Midweek markets are a great opportunity for farmers since it provides a platform to sell your freshest products that otherwise might not make it to the weekend,” says Charles Holub, owner of Scotch Ridge Berry & Tree Farm. He notes that since his farm doesn’t use pesticides or herbicides, they must pick berries every other day to avoid critters. “And naturally grown fruit doesn’t keep long after picking - just a day or two - so these midweek markets let us sell more of our product,” Holub adds.

For customers, the smaller size of the Wednesday market is a draw, especially this year. “Many customers prefer the smaller crowds - plus it makes it easier to have more meaningful personal interactions with customers,” says Becky Dennison of Shushan Valley Hydro Farms. “Since there’s less traffic, products don’t sell out as quickly, and there’s not such a rush for customers to get to the market. The atmosphere is very laid back,” adds Charles Holub.

A family-friendly affair, this season’s Wednesday

• 1 cup sugar snap peas*, remove the stem end and strings • 1 cup broccoli rabe*, cut into ½ inch pieces • 1 cup cherry tomatoes*, split in half • ¼ cup olive oil*

• 2 spring garlic*, minced or grated on a Microplane • 1 spring onion*, diced • pinch of red pepper flakes • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter* • 1 pound twisted or tubular pasta (reserve ½ cup of the cooking water) • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley* • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest and 1 tablespoon juice • 1 ounce parmesan cheese*, grated plus more for serving • freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus and cook until bright green and tender-crisp, about 3 minutes.

Using a fine-mesh strainer, transfer to colander and run under cold water to chill. Repeat with the zucchini, peas, and broccoli.

Combine all the blanched vegetables in a large bowl, add the tomatoes and set aside.

2. Heat the oil in a 10 inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and onion, cooking until gently sizzling. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook until garlic is pale golden brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the pepper flakes and toss until fragrant about 30 seconds. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter.

Set aside.

3. Cook the pasta according to the directions on the package.

Drain, reserving ½ cup of the cooking water and return the pasta to the pot. Set over medium-low heat.

4. Add the vegetables, garlic/onion sauce, and half of the reserved pasta water. Stir until the sauce comes together and coats the pasta. Add more pasta water until desired consistency is reached.

Stir in parsley, lemon zest and juice, and cheese. Season with pepper. Top with extra cheese.

NOTE: The original recipe calls for summer squash (yellow), shelled fava beans, and frozen peas. Use your favorite in-season vegetables.

For the Love of the Game Hello my Foodie Friends !

This weekend is Father’s Day. Not sure what to get dad since he already has a bazillion ties? A home cooked meal with some of their favorite for Saratoga TODAY foods is a great way to kick things off. How about cooking something special for him? Many of us have been lucky enough to grow up with dads who love to cook, who have mastered crème brûlée or grilling or taught us to make perfect rice. Others have dads who just love to eat, who will dig into a shared plate happily and are always ready to share a meal.

This Sunday, we’ll honor all of them, maybe with pancakes or a special dinner or a thoughtful food-related gift. In preparing that special meal, there may be some cool culinary tools you need to help.

Among my favorite gifts to receive on Father’s Day are tickets to a Yankee’s baseball game. Since my daughter’s birthday often times falls on the same day, we both enjoy the gift of watching a game to celebrate.

Growing up in Connecticut, our family and friends were split several ways with teams they loved - Yankees, Red Sox, and the Mets. My family was always for the Yankee’s. Our children grew up watching players like the 1998 Yankee team and Derek Jeter through his baseball career. However, I do love watching a game at Fenway Park in Boston and then walking the streets of Boston to have a beer at the Baseball Tavern on Boylston Street or at the Bleacher Bar. My heart still belongs to Yankee Stadium though. So many years of game watching was done in the old stadium. Baseball tugs at the thoughts and emotions of every fan. Our family loves baseball. We are entrenched with baseball history and every aspect the game has to offer. I draw upon the history of the game and the iconic men who helped make MLB what it is today: Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Cy Young, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson and many, many more.

I am amazed at the power of hitters like Yankee’s slugger Aaron Judge, who make us stop and watch every at-bat. There’s nothing better than seeing Judge step into the batter’s box and attack a pitcher . . . especially when he connects for a 500-foot blast.

Besides baseball, we have a perfect gift for Dad this Father’s Day! A Dutch oven is a great gift to give especially if you have a Dad who loves to cook. • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered

• 1 teaspoon beef base • 1 teaspoon pepper • 2 to 3 green onions (green portion only), thinly sliced

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place potatoes, carrots, green pepper and onion in a 5- or 6-qt. slow cooker. Rub flour over roast.

In a large skillet or dutch oven, heat oil over medium heat; brown roast on all sides. Transfer roast and drippings to slow cooker; arrange mushrooms around roast and sprinkle roast with brown sugar.

2. Combine teriyaki sauce, ginger, beef base, oregano and pepper in a small bowl. Drizzle sauce slowly over mushrooms and roast.

3. Cook, covered, on low until roast is tender, 7-8 hours. Remove roast and vegetables to a serving platter, top with green onions. If desired, skim fat and thicken cooking juices for gravy; serve with roast.

Photographing the Beauty Around Me Saratoga County Office for the Aging is excited to offer a new, free program for 55+ residents of Saratoga County, a six-week zoom course designed to teach older adults to capture digital photographs of their environments and the people they encounter on a daily basis.

Participants will learn and hone basic aim-and-shoot skills. By the end of this class, students will have an appreciation for what makes a great photograph.

No previous photography skills

Summer Stroll: Exploring the Gut Downtown Saratoga Springs, NW corner of Putnam and Spring Streets, Saratoga Springs 10:30 a.m. – Noon | Down in the Valley: Exploring the Gut. The tour returns after five years! SARATOGA SPRINGS — A dozen deep stood the queue to enter Saratoga Guitar on its final Sunday afternoon.

Matt McCabe owned and operated multiple Saratoga Guitar stores in and around the city for a generation. In January, McCabe, who was 63, died from complications of COVID-19.

“June 14, 1994. Flag Day. I started in a little 160 squarefoot hole-in-the-wall space on Caroline Street,” he remembered, when I’d asked him on the occasion of his 25th anniversary in 2019, seated on the public bench outside his Broadway shop, where he’d sometimes carve a few moments from his busy day to dialogue with everyone from local musicians to elected officials.

His first sale? “I don’t remember specifically. It was probably a couple of picks,” he had said, with a laugh. “I sold a couple of picks today too. So, pretty consistent!”

McCabe served two 2-year terms as city Finance Commissioner, from 2004-2007, for more than 20 years hosted The Capital Region Guitar Show - drawing to the city a bevy of instrument dealers, musicians, and fans from across the northeast. Musicians Graham Nash and Stephen Stills, John Fogerty, Joe Bonamassa, and Dave Matthews and actor Sam Shepard were among those who visited his shops.

stairs of the Collamer Building and spilled onto the Broadway sidewalk, where a pair of bronze lions guarded City Hall. Inside the store, violins and cellos dangled from hooks along the shop’s southern wall. The north wall

provided safe harbor upon which clung acoustic wood and latterday electric guitars, the perusing path in-between dotted by amplifiers and accordions awaiting the everything-must-go shoppers to take them home.

The Sembrich 2021 Free Film Festival June 21 BOLTON LANDING — The Sembrich is launching its 2021 Free Film Festival with a lakeside screening of Crescendo (2019), on June 21.

“We are excited to resume our Free Film Festival in 2021,” says Suzanna M. Bernd, The Sembrich’s Executive Director, in a statement. “We welcome all community members – including residents and visitors – to join us for these free lakeside screenings.”

The Sembrich’s 2021 Free Film Festival will take place outdoors on the lakeshore under its performance tent. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and enjoy the park-like atmosphere of The Sembrich’s historic lakeside grounds.

Loosely inspired by Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Crescendo tells the story of a conductor striving to form an Israeli-Palestinian youth orchestra amid political tensions.

Many brilliant scenes feature classical music, including performances of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Dvorak’s Serenade for Winds, and Ravel’s Bolero. The film premiered at the Munich International Film Festival in 2019, where it received a ten-minute standing ovation.

Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York Presents Juneteenth Reading of “Camp Logan”

ALBANY — Commemorating the events of Juneteenth, Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York (BTTUNY) will present a virtual reading of Celeste Bedford Walker’s searing historical drama, CAMP LOGAN. The play chronicles the story of six Black U.S. soldiers and the incidents leading to the tragic 1917 racially charged riot in Houston, Texas that left dozens dead or wounded in the streets. In the aftermath of what was deemed a mutiny by the military courts martial, 19 Black soldiers were executed by hanging and 47 were sentenced to life in prison without parole. The reading will air beginning 5 p.m.

June 19 and remain available for streaming through June 22.

CAMP LOGAN playwright, Celeste Bedford Walker, has written more than 40 plays and has been recognized by the U.S. Congress for her historical contribution as a producer and author of works that

bring to light lost stories of African American history.

The reading will air on all of theREP’s Streaming Platforms Proctors Collaborative YouTube channel, on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku – search and download the Collaborative Studios app or through the Open Stage Media On-Demand Channel. The reading is free, but there is a suggested donation of $15. All proceeds go directly to the work of Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York, a notfor-profit organization.

Tang Teaching Museum Named a Blue Star Museum SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College has been named a Blue Star Museum.

The Tang joins more than 2,000 museums across the United States to offer free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense.

The program runs through Labor Day, Sept. 6, 2021. The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard as well as members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned

Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a CAC card for entrance. For a full list of participating museums, visit arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

The Museum will be open by appointment from June 13 through July 9 to view the exhibition Nicole Cherubini: Shaking the Trees, as we prepare for new exhibitions and to reopen to the public on July 10. Summer hours will be in effect from July 10 through August 29 and will be Thursday through Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m.

Opera Saratoga Presents “America Sings: A Juneteenth Celebration,” in Live Streamed Concert from Caffè Lena SARATOGA SPRINGS — Opera Saratoga announced this week that AMERICA SINGS, the company’s free concert series created to amplify the voices of artists from racial groups historically underrepresented on the concert stage, will return to Caffè Lena June 19 for a Juneteenth Celebration, celebrating the end of slavery in the United States.

The program was curated by bass-baritone Carl DuPont, a distinguished alumnus of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program who is now on faculty at Peabody Conservatory where he teaches voice and a survey course on Art Song by African American Composers.

Juneteenth, which is celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The arrival of troops came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered

at Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia, but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas—until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Juneteenth honors that day - the end of slavery in the United States.

“In America we have de jure and de facto legal and government systems,” says concert curator Carl Dupont. “Juneteenth is the crystallization of that for me. Although The Emancipation Proclamation was issued two years prior to Juneteenth (de jure) the actual emancipation of those citizens in Texas (de facto) didn't happen until two years later.

This holiday is a reminder of how stubborn structural racism can be, and how indomitable the persistence of the human spirit remains.”

In putting together the concert program, DuPont has included prose and poetry – along with an extraordinary selection of

music by African American composers - to create a comprehensive texture of celebrating Juneteenth.

Musical selections include songs by H. Leslie Adams, Tim Amukele, Margaret Bonds, Uzee Brown, Moses Hogan, Betty Jackson King, Rosephanye Powell, Florence Price, and Hale Smith. Spoken word selections include excerpts from The Declaration of Independence, The Emancipation Proclamation, and The General Orders which actually notified the enslaved people that they were free. The program will also include first-hand diary accounts and poetry from formerly enslaved people, as well as newspaper copy of the observation of the first Juneteenth celebrations.

The program will be performed by Festival Artists from Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program, who include notable emerging Black singers alongside artists who come from a wide range of other racial backgrounds, many of whom are learning more about Juneteenth through the experience of putting together this program.

“America Sings: A Juneteenth Celebration” is presented in partnership with Caffè Lena. The free concert will take place at 2 p.m.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nick Grosso becomes Saratoga’s first ever Section II Singles Champion, and Toga Tennis gets second place after a hard-fought match in the Section II AA Team Finals.

The Individual Sectional II Tournament for high school tennis was held on Tuesday, June 15. After defeating Ashrith Rao (6-2, 6-2) from Bethlehem in the semi-finals, Grosso advanced and defeated Albany Academy’s Will O’Brien (6-2, 6-0) to claim the Section II Boys’ Tennis Singles Champion title. Grosso ends his tennis career at Saratoga with a perfect 18-0 season.

Also held this past Tuesday were the Section II Doubles Championships. Saratoga’s doubles team of Andrew Blaha and Vincent Devito finished third.

Bethlehem defeated Saratoga 5-4 to win the championship title.

Saratoga came out strong in the first three singles matches – Nick Grosso defeated Ashrith Rao, Andrew Blaha defeated Will Bievenue, and Jackson Katusha defeated Graham Hardiman.

Then there were numerous three set matches, such as the 4th and 6th singles matches. In the 4th, Vincent Devito lost to Bethlehem’s Hayden Brown. In the 6th, Ian

Hill defeated Bethlehem’s Tao Xie. Coming back to the results of 5th singles match, Liam Chartrand lost to Bethlehem’s Aden Haas.

In the doubles matches, Ryan Clancy and Kevin Rosas lost to Jack Burman and Emi Torlasco, Devin Kim and Toby Webber lost to Nyle Dennin and David Bievenue, and Nate Krackeler and Declan Ladd lost to Joey Mocerine and Conner Darcy. Both the 2nd and 3rd doubles matches were 3 sets as well.

Pickleball Workshops at the Rec Takemori Earns 7th SARATOGA SPRINGS — If you don’t know a dink from a volley or want to improve your game, sign up for a Pickleball Workshop.

Both workshops will be on Thursday, July 1. The Beginner Workshop for ages 14+ will be held from 12-2 p.m. and is geared toward those who have never played or who are interested

in improving their skills. The Intermediate Workshop for ages 18+ will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. and is geared towards those rated at a 2.5-3.5 level interested in improving their game.

Both workshops will be held at the East Side Rec Pickleball Courts located at 226 Lake Ave. Fees are $45 for city residents and $65 for

non-city residents. Fees after June 24 are $70 for city residents and $90 for non-city residents.

You will need a paddle, sneakers, and water. Coordinator is Ken Henderson, Director, Traveling Pickleball Pros.

This camp is for ages 5-14, and runs July 12 to July 16 from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at East Side Rec (226 Lake Ave). Fees are $80 for City residents and $90 for NonCity residents. After July 5, fees increase to $105 for City residents and $115 for Non-City residents.

Players need to come prepared with a mask, water, and sneakers.

Intro to Ice Skating Come build your skills at the ice rink with the best! Intro to Ice Skating is open to those who are just learning to ice skate or are looking to improve their skills. The level-based system of teaching provides a clear path for advancement. Instructors have many years of experience teaching and emphasizing fun and safety while providing proper technique in ice skating basics.

GLENVILLE — Teri Takemori, from the Glenvillebased Jason Morris Judo Center, was promoted to Shichidan (7th Degree Black Belt) by the United States Judo Federation on June 1.

Takemori is originally from Alexandria, VA where she started Judo at her father’s (Jimmy Takemori) nationally renowned club, Washington Judo. Teri started at the age of 10 and quickly was a top junior competitor winning High School Nationals.

She then went to school at San Jose State, who had a good college Judo team. After graduating from San Jose State, she moved to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO to continue her Judo training.

Teri enjoyed a prolific senior career which was highlighted by her 1985 Gold Medal at the prestigious Pacific Rim Championships held at

the famed Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan. Teri medaled at the US Senior Nationals eight times and reached the podium at the US Open five times. After her prolific competitive career, Teri rose in the ranks of the refereeing world to achieve the highest international level, which was an “A”, culminating in being chosen to referee at the 2003 World Championships in Osaka, Japan.

She was also an Olympic alternate referee for the 2004 Games.

Takemori also co-founded the internationally renowned Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) in 2000 with her husband, 4x Olympian, Jason Morris. The JMJC has created 9 Olympians, 408 International Medalists, and 133 US Senior National Medalists in its 21-year history. The JMJC also hosts the annual Morris Cup Judo Championships held at the Burnt Hills High School.

When Josh Moore founded the league a little over a decade ago, it was centered here in the Northeast, and you could buy a franchise for only $2,500 on Craigslist. It was when Rob Lloyd, current AUDL Chairman, came on board in 2013 and took over the franchising, that the league started growing fast.

“One of our pillars is to become truly global in terms of awareness of the sport,” said AUDL Commissioner and CEO, Steve Hall. Hall has been involved with the AUDL since 2015 when he bought the Charlotte franchise and then joined the board in 2018.

Today, over 5 million people are Ultimate fans. As the AUDL describes it, Ultimate is a “fast, flowing, and highly athletic lowcontact sport.” Players advance down a football field, 7 on 7, in an attempt to make a pass into the end

zone to score. The sport mixes the techniques of soccer with basketball, as players need a pivot foot because they cannot run with the disc.

AUDL game plays have generated coverage on ESPN’s Sports Center Top 10, Fox Sports, Bleacher Report, and more. You can see highlights on AUDL’s social media, and watch fulllength games on Fox Sports 2 every Wednesday night at 6 p.m. or stream them on audl.tv or online at www.theaudl.com.

In a competitive industry, the AUDL is a step ahead of other sports leagues as they embrace online sports betting and digital currency.

Not only is the AUDL now on DraftKings, but they have also announced their first collection of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). The AUDL has compiled a digital library of iconic plays made by legendary AUDL players into video-based NFTs called MoMintz, available at www.audlmomintz.com.

“NFTs help players increase their brand, and give them a chance to become brands in modern ways,” said Hall. “It is the digitalization of sports memorabilia.”

More exciting news involves our home team, the New York Empire. Players will start wearing “wearables” – a GPS tracker for sports from STATSports. They will be testing out the Apex Pro Series to calculate their speed, heart rate, etc. during games. The New York Empire were the 2019 Champions, and the team is a top three contender already this season.

“The New York Empire has some of the greatest players, and will be a powerhouse for years to come,” said Hall.

The AUDL will also be coming out with their first console-based Ultimate video game very soon.

They are working on the prototype now, and are hoping to get it on the market by Championship Weekend in September 2021.

10th Annual Shred Event Benefits “Pay It Forward” Movement

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Financial Services held their 10th Annual Shred Event on Saturday, June 12 outside of their offices in the Fingerpaint parking lot at 18 Division St. Saratoga Financial Services partnered with the Saratoga

County Chamber of Commerce, Confidata, Fingerpaint, and the Saratoga Business Journal to put on this event.

Shredding is a safe way to dispose of old documents and confidential files; all paper was shredded, baled, and shipped to local paper mills to be recycled for reuse.

The event was free of charge, but monetary donations were accepted to benefit the local Act With Respect Always program to help spread the “pay it forward movement.”

Several AWRA students helped throughout the event, and over $700 was donated to the foundation.
