Smile You’re On Candid Camera SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council this week unanimously approved a bond resolution for the improvements of city security measures, that were “planned in light of recent events and long-term challenges in specific city locations,” according to city documents. The approval authorizes the issuance of $214,188 in bonds to finance the purchases and installation of additional cameras and analytics to increase safety and security in Congress Park and key city streetscapes.

Details about the types of cameras and their placement in the city are anticipated to be announced in the near future.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Citing significant venues such as the Saratoga Race Course and Saratoga Performing Arts Center reopening and the ability of restaurants and other businesses to welcome an increasingly

number of consumers, there are early indications that the city is rebounding from the pandemic afflicted budget crunch of 2020.

“We’re seeing substantial improvements in city revenues as a result,” Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan said this week.

Ballston Spa’s “Éclair” House

ne Hundred and Fifty Years ago, on July 15, 1871, a news article appeared in the Saturday edition of the Ballston Journal, “Wm Brown and John Parent are preparing the foundations for two fine houses on Bath Street, opposite the Washington Spring.”

Brown’s house would not be the typical gable-roofed residence, But a fashionable FrenchGothic Mansard. The postcivil war period was known for unabashed ostentation. Suppliers, manufacturers, and financiers had profited greatly from the government’s need to equip and maintain its armed forces. There was so many nouveau riche showing off their wealth, it was fashionable to do so.

Brown was a grocer in Ballston Spa and had made a comfortable life for his family. He was, in no stretch of the imagination, wealthy. That didn’t stop Brown, a poor boy from Oswego, from trying to appear rich.

Not to be shown up by Mr. Parent or anyone else, he engaged the services of architect, Marcus Cummings. Cummings worked out of Troy and had recently landed important commissions in Saratoga Springs, including the Village Hall, John Morrissey’s Casino, and the railroad station.

That solution created another problem. Dormers formed by the projection through the cornice had to be supported. Two were over porches, and one over a bay.

The fourth was over nothing.

The solution was to extend a downstairs window through the wall to support the fourth window. Two provide a balanced interior, the first-floor parlor’s other window also had to be extended, even though it was under the front porch.

Brown’s Mansard-roofed cottage posed a stylistic problem. It was essentially a story and a half structure. The steep roof covered most of the second floor, allowing for ten-foot ceilings. However, windows in the roof area were traditionally set above the cornice, creating a claustrophobic interior.

That created yet another problem for Cummings. He couldn’t leave the resulting alcoves unadorned in a formal parlor. He topped them with canopies jutting into the room, which were supported the same way as the presidium over the Glens Falls Opera House stage, with square columns turned 45 degrees.

The columns of Mr. Brown’s house, though, were decorated with an indented molding, terminating with a right isosceles triangle. The architect could have stopped there but carried over the same interior design to the bay window in the second parlor.

Cumming’s solution was to push the second-floor windows through the cornice, creating a two-foot by four-foot alcove, peaked by the sides of a right, isosceles triangle to a height of over eight feet. The result opened up the second-floor rooms, creating airy spaces of fanciful angles.

Having solved the cascading problems, Cummings added an exterior flourish of sheer genius.

In a period of heavily decorated exterior window surrounds, he eliminated all moldings from around the second floor, front parlor, and bay windows. Only windows under the side porch and on the non-public side of

the house had heavy moldings. A light band course ran the length of the house, tracing over the tops of the windows on each floor. (see exterior picture above) Finally, Cummings created a false tower by pushing to the ceiling four, tall, narrow second-floor windows above the house’s entry and capped them with a fourgabled roof topped with a crest.

The over-all effect of steep-roofed dormers rising along the height of the building, an unbroken span of body color along the public sides of the structure, and an apparent tower, was a far larger and taller house than the small French Gothic cottage really was.

Mr. Brown had a house unlike anyone else, except the owners of the Glens Falls Opera House.

They had Cummings design a slightly larger sister house, which was built on the corner of Platt and Warren Streets in Glens Falls. Eventually that building was cut into apartments, allowed to deteriorate, and torn down several years ago. Brown’s cottage remains, one of Ballston Spa’s many architectural landmarks.

Who: Michael Dupee, Founding Partner of Revolution Rail Co. Q. What is railbiking, how does it work?

A. Railbiking is riding custom bikes made for railroad tracks. The bikes come with 2 or 4 seats, and each seat has a set of pedals.

Railbiking is a cool way to get out in nature and see the Adirondacks!

Q. Where are your railbiking locations?

A. My partner Rob and I opened one in North Creek that goes to the mines of Tahawus in July of 2017. We started with 6 bikes and graduated to 11. In 2018, we opened with 14.

We had a great reception and got a second run going – one run goes north, and one goes south. We tested one in Cape May which is now open, and we also opened a South Fork location in Colorado.

Q. You have a run in Hadley also, how long has that location been open?

A. We did a test run in Hadley in October last year with the fall foliage. We opened the location this year.

Q. How long is the run in Hadley, and what are the sights along the way?

A. It is 6 miles total – 3 miles out and 3 miles back. It is a wilderness trip, and the highlight is going over the trestle bridge which is 90 ft. in the air above the Sacandaga River.

Q. What is the schedule for Hadley, and are reservations required?

A. In the summer we recommend reservations.

Q. What is the cost?

A. It is $80 for a 2-seat bike, and $140 for a 4-seat bike.

Q. Is railbiking difficult to do? Is there an age requirement?

A. Any kids of any age can go on our railbikes.

Infants can be in chest carriers, and ages 2 to 4 are strapped into a 5-point harness. The grades are pretty close to flat, and the bikes are designed so that if you aren’t pedaling, the pedals won’t move, and you can rest your feet on them. [Their oldest railbiker to date was 96 years old.]

Q. How do you pick these locations?

A. We look for places that are really notable, underutilized or not utilized railroad tracks that are still in good shape. A lot of times these railroads are in spectacular, beautiful places and we want to use them to their full potential.

There are a variety of variables, but we try to pick places that are flat and close to facilities (i.e. restaurants, hotels).

where he ran a drug-testing lab for racehorses for nine years.

A self-taught artist, he left the chemistry field and turned full-time to his real passion of writing and illustrating sciencebased picture books.

Since 1986 he wrote and published nine books and illustrated another four. Most of them are non-fiction and research based. His “Big” books; The Big Rock, The Big Tree, The Big Storm and The Big Rivers were designed to inform children and their adults about the natural world while also providing an historical perspective. During his writing career Bruce traveled extensively, often to do research.

On one trip to northeastern Alaska, he found himself hiking in the middle of a huge caribou herd which resulted in The Big Caribou Herd: Life in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Bruce’s books were named Outstanding Science Trade Books by the Children’s Book Council. The Big Storm won the 1993 John Burroughs Award for best children’s book featuring natural history. Ookpik: The Travels of a Snowy Owl, was a finalist for the Charlotte Award of New York State and Coyote and Badger: Desert Hunters of the Southwest was a winner in the Children’s Category of the National Outdoor Book Awards.

Also, a self-taught musician, Bruce often sang and played his guitar with friends, as well as in

various venues, such as nursing homes, and spontaneously whenever he was inspired by the acoustics. Every year, as Head Elf, he hosted a Christmas party, which included lighting candles on an outdoor evergreen and singing carols.

Bruce is survived by his wife Helen Dickerson, sister Sue (Bill) Rohrer, two children Julia (Mark) Morrissey and Fred (Nancy) Hiscock, three grandchildren Max, Finn and Tempest Morrissey, nephews Will (Kim) Rohrer and Tom (Megan) Rohrer, and many cousins.

In Bruce’s final letter to friends and family, he wrote: “I want my remains to be scattered to the winds, so I am more a part of everything on this beautiful planet. Perhaps you will think of me when the seasons change, and how I loved the first snowfall, the delicate spring woodland flowers, the small leaves on the trees, that will fill the woods, and the color they will display when the frost comes.”

PORTER CORNERS — Bruce Hiscock, 80, awardwinning children’s book author and illustrator, died on July 11, 2021, in the house he built by hand using the rocks and trees on his property in Porter Corners, NY, what he called “the edge of the wild.” Bruce was well known both for his books and for his programs in schools and libraries, teaching children about the natural world and how to draw it. Local schoolchildren visited his studio and the woods around his home to see the real “big rock” - the subject of one of his books. His murals greet people as they enter the Children’s Floor of the Saratoga Springs Public Library.

Bruce grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, save for the nearly two years he spent with his family on Shemya, a remote Alaskan Island.

Throughout his childhood, Bruce spent time outside, where he honed his observation skills, knowledge of animals and plants, and his love of nature and science - especially snowstorms. This all fed his later work as a nature writer and illustrator.

Bruce attended the University of Michigan and then Cornell University where he earned a PhD in chemistry. He used his scientific training as a researcher, a professor at Utica College and in Saratoga Springs

COURT Steven E. Willetts, of Waterford, pleaded guilty July 14 to course of sexual conduct against a child in the first-degree, in connection with multiple incidents that involved a child under the age of 13, for a period of more than two years. Sentencing scheduled for Sept. 16.

James A. Duffy, of Johnstown, was sentenced July 14 in Saratoga County Court to 18 years-tolife, after pleading guilty to murder in the second-degree, in connection with the death of Allyzibeth Lamont. Duffy previously admitted to acting in concert with co-defendant Giorgios N. Kakavelos on Oct. 28, 2019 in actions resulting in the death of Lamont, who was 22. Kakavelos is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 19 and faces a maximum sentence of life without parole.

Daniel L. Jones, 43, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced July 14 to 3.5 years in jail and 2 years post-release supervision, after pleading to attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance, in Wilton.

POLICE Tyaisha Tulloch, 22, of Ballston Spa, was charged July 10 in Saratoga Springs with

misdemeanor DWI, aggravated DWI, and an equipment violation.

Louis Brown, 24, of Troy, was charged July 10 in Saratoga Springs with criminal mischief, and criminal possession of a controlled substance Crystal Bears, 28, of Schenectady, was charged July 10 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, refusal to take a breath test, obstruct governmental administration, resisting arrest, and moved from lane unsafely.

Daniel Green, 25, of Catskill, was charged July 10 in Saratoga Springs with criminal possession of a weapon/loaded firearm – a felony, and disorderly conduct.

Michelle Maffetone, 36, of Schenectady, was charged July 10 in Saratoga Springs with two felony counts criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Jason Carter, 20, of Schenectady, was charged July 10 in Saratoga Springs with criminal impersonation, a misdemeanor.

Gary Robertson, 35, of Gloverville, was charged July 11 in Saratoga Springs with making a terroristic threat, and disorderly conduct.

Eddie Plerqui, 22, of Troy, was charged July 11 in Saratoga Springs with circumvent interlock misdemeanor, disorderly conduct, and two driving violations.

Daniel Ovland, 27, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 11 with two counts criminal mischief.

Johntay Jones, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 11 with harassment, menacing, false impersonation, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Five people were charged following a Saratoga Black Lives Matter protest on July 14.

The protest commenced in Congress Park and moved its way around the downtown area. “Police first requested the group, which consisted of 60 or so people, to move out of the roadways. The request was repeated a few times, but was not accepted by the group. Police actions then took place to open up the roadways and this resulted in the arrests of five people,” city police said, in a statement. Adam Walker, age 32, Albany, Arlo P. Zwicker, age 18, Saratoga Springs, Anthony Brown-Davis, age 32, Albany, and Michael D. Janidlo, age 36, Clifton Park, were each

charged with disorderly conduct, a violation. Derek C. VanDermark, age 46, Ballston Spa, was charged with disorderly conduct, a violation, and obstructing governmental administration in the seconddegree, a misdemeanor.

was sent to Saratoga County Jail without bail to await further proceedings. Charges: six felony counts criminal possession of a controlled substance, and one felony count criminal possession of a weapon.

On July 12, the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office Narcotics Unit charged Thomas J. Dingmon, 30, of Saratoga Springs, after a lengthy investigation into drug trafficking in Saratoga County.

Dingmon was located on an active NYS parole warrant by the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office Narcotics Unit in the Town of Galway and was allegedly found to be in possession of over 250 bags of heroin, significant quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as an electric stun gun, and a large amount of US Currency, according to the sheriff ’s office. Jonah T. Figueras, 25, of Wilton, was charged July 15 with felony burglary, and felony criminal mischief. The alleged incidents occurred at the Pyramid Pines mobile home park, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office.

Demetrick M. Rawlins, 24, of Hudson Falls, was charged July 9 with felony burglary, in connection with an alleged incident in Northumberland.

Rawlins is accused of remaining unlawfully in the dwelling of another person, and stealing firearms and a motorcycle. He was sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, or $10,000 bond.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Commander Raymond Gamicchia relieved Cmdr. Phillip Boice as Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs.

Rear Adm. Charles W. Rock, Commander, Navy Region MidAtlantic, presided over the ceremony and commended Boice for his leadership of the installation over the past two years, noting his accomplishments not only navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, but praising his work with local community leaders and stakeholders to ensure installation mission effectiveness during a historic time for NSA Saratoga Springs.

Boice, who served as commanding officer since August 2019 departs for his next assignment as the Surface Operations Officer for Carrier Strike Group 9 in San Diego.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Casino Hotel is teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a Blood Drive on Monday, July 26. Members of the local community are urged to join dozens of Saratoga Casino Hotel team members to give blood from noon to 6 p.m. inside the hotel ballroom.

The American Red Cross continues to experience a severe blood shortage and donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give now. The Red Cross needs to collect more than 1,000 additional blood donations each day to meet current demands as hospitals respond to an unusually high number of traumas and emergency room visits, organ transplants and elective surgeries.

Prestwick Chase Makes Pillows for Cancer Patients

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Prestwick Chase knitting group stuffed, sewed and tied ribbons on breast cancer pillows that were provided by the Bacon Hill Reformed Church Ladies. The pillows will be delivered to the Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital for cancer patients. Saturday Farmers’ Market Returns to High Rock Park SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Farmers’ Market Association’s (SFMA) Saturday market has returned to its traditional summer home at the High Rock Park pavilions. Through the end of October, the SFMA will now host two weekly markets in the downtown location: Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

This year’s Saturday market

features around 60 local vendors selling fresh produce, dairy products, eggs, meats, flowers, baked goods, prepared foods, and more.

At Wednesday’s market, just over 15 vendors provide a similar range of items.

The decision to start the summer season in two locations in May was made to keep market vendors and customers safe while the COVID-19 pandemic

required more social distancing.

The smaller Wednesday market fit comfortably at High Rock Park, but for the larger Saturday market a more expansive footprint was still needed. Now that restrictions have been lifted, both markets are able to return to the pavilions - with increased spacing where possible to ease customer flow.

Application of Final Draft of UDO Under Consideration Thursday

SARATOGA SPRINGS — At City Hall on July 29, the Planning Board is considering an advisory opinion to the City Council on the final draft of the Unified Development Ordinance.

A Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) is a tool which combines traditional zoning and subdivision regulations, along with other development standards

for items such as design guidelines, storm water management, signs and street standards into one, easyto-read reference document. It is intended to eliminate redundant or conflicting code provisions, help to streamline the review and approval process and clarify the steps and requirements with clear illustrations and language.

The meeting takes place at 7 p.m.

Offering Cash Prizes: Saratoga County Initative to Bolster Defibrillator Database BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County officials this week announced its Office of Emergency Services is hosting a contest with cash prizes for those who help locate AEDs around the county. The contest, in partnership with the EMS Council, is an effort to grow the county’s automatic external defibrillator (AED) database.

Contestants are asked to locate and upload photos and information of AEDs around the county using the PulsePoint AED app. The contest runs through Aug. 13.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the five people who register the most AEDs located in Saratoga County and will be distributed as

follows: $300 for first place; $200 for second place; $150 each for third, fourth and fifth place. The initiative is funded through grants from PulsePoint and the EMS Council, each providing $950.

PulsePoint works in the background at the computeraided 911 dispatch center. When the call-taker verifies the location and determines there is a sudden cardiac emergency in a public location, PulsePoint automatically notifies CPR-trained individuals within a quarter-mile of the event. The PulsePoint AED app provides visual directions to the emergency along with the location of nearby AEDs. According to Saratoga

County OES statistics, on average, there are 35 cardiac arrest events in Saratoga County each month with 10 of them happening in a public location. The OES currently has 251 AEDs registered throughout the county and estimates there are more than 2,000 in total throughout Saratoga County. Most AEDs are located in schools, businesses, stores, fitness centers and restaurants.

City Sales Tax, Mortgage Tax Revenues Exceeding Expectations, Anticipated to Top 2019 Figures “We’re seeing substantial improvements in city revenues” continued from front page...

Sales tax year-to-date revenue collected through the end of May are running 36% higher than in 2020, and 10% higher than in 2019. In mid-October, the city will receive reports for the months of June, July and August.

“We’ve got a new projection based on data received of potentially $14.5 million coming in in sales tax revenue – which is a lot more than what we received even in 2019. So, we’re trending well, which is good.”

Mortgage Tax YTD amounts collected from October 2020 through June 2021 are running 60% higher than 2020, and 42% higher than 2019. The $1.56 million collected thus far already exceeds the $1.5 million that was anticipated in the budget. ”Mortgage tax is performing very, very well for us,” said Madigan, adding that with additional mortgage tax revenue expected, total projections are being upped to $1.9 million.

Occupancy Tax amounts collected the first two quarters “remain low, but are improving.”

Year-to-date collections are 40% higher than in 2020 and are projected to exceed the $338,000 initially budgeted. A new projection has been set at $375,000. “(But) that does tell you that the City Center is probably not doing so well since that is one of their main revenue drivers as well as Discover Saratoga. Hotels are booked right now, so we’re anticipating some occupancy tax coming from that.”

As a result of the uptick in revenue, the 2021 budget has been increased to cover an increase of police officers, overtime adjustments and citywide security measures - totaling about $1.4 million, and reinstated 2021 employee contracts based on MOU’s the council approved Tuesday – which will total about $1.1 million. The amendments will occur mid-to-late Autumn, Madigan said.

“Right now, revenues are looking very positive, and it gives

us the ability to adjust some of our expense lines.”

• MLK Saratoga donated $1,500 to be used for siting a memorial bench near the War Memorial Pavilion in Congress Park.

The bench, in memory of longtime Saratoga Springs resident Lt. Clarence Dart will hold a plaque that remembers Dart as a husband, father and community leader, and notes his role as a Tuskegee Airman, a World War II fighter pilot, Congressional Gold Medal,

recipient. Dart died in 2012 and members of his family attended Tuesday’s meeting at City Hall.

• The council approved putting up for sale two parcels the city owns at the southwest corner of Caroline and Henry streets, adjacent to the Saratoga Springs Public Library. The property is comprised of 0.17 acres and is currently used as a parking lot.

The property was appraised by the city at $500,000 and that will be the minimum bid accepted. Bids may be received

by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at which time the sealed bids will be publicly opened and read.

• Commissioner Robin Dalton requested the council recommend members for a COVID-19 Memorial Committee.

Once formed, the group will suggest a location and design of a memorial that will recognize the more than 60 city residents whose lives were lost due to the disease, as well as recognize the efforts of first responders to protect the public health of the city.

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation to honor and memorialize the life of Spc. Abigail Rose “Abby” Jenks, who was killed in April while participating in an Airborne training operation from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter over Sicily Drop Zone in Fort Bragg Jenks, of the Town of Wilton, grew up in the Greenfield-Saratoga area and was a 2018 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School.

She enlisted in the U.S. Army and entered active duty in October 2018 In addition to the reading of the proclamation Tuesday, Wilton Supervisor John Lant presented to members of Jenks’ family the flag that was flown for 30 days in honor of Jenks at the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors.

Jenks was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Army Parachutist Badge. Spc. Jenks was also posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

The NYS DOH tracks data daily in all 62 New York State counties. As of its July 21 posting, the 7-day average positivity rate in Saratoga County was 2.2%. That rate ranks sixth highest in the state, just behind Essex (3.0%), Cattaraugus (2.7%), Greene (2.6%), and Warren and Schoharie (2.5%) counties.

In terms of vaccinations, just over 150,000 of Saratoga’s 230,000 county residents – 65.4% of the overall county population - have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“The county is doing very well on vaccinations (and) the good news is that the hospitalizations haven’t spiked, the fatalities haven’t spiked,” said Malta Supervisor Darren O’Connor, who on Tuesday was publicly

named Chair of the Health & Human Services Committee.

What impact the Delta variant has on the country in general and Saratoga County specifically remains to be seen.

“It’s disturbing to see that uptick on the graph for infections and doubly concerning because we’re in late July and the fall is on the horizon,” O’Connor said. “And we know what happened last year in the fall, so we’re just hoping with the vaccinations being really effective – even against this Delta variant – that we’re not going to go back in to a place where we were.”

The Saratoga County Public Health Services Department announced this week it will offer free community pop-up COVID19 vaccination clinics at the following times and locations: 11 a.m.

– 2 p.m. Friday, July 23 through Sunday, July 25 at the Saratoga County Fair, next to the Sheriff ’s Department, Gate 5 - Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson available; 4 -6 p.m. Thursday, July 29 at Stewarts, 208 Broad St. in Schuylerville Johnson & Johnson available; 10 – 11:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6 at Living Hope United Methodist Church, 126 Middletown Rd in Waterford Johnson & Johnson available.

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is a two-dose series authorized for use in individuals ages 12 and older. The Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is a single dose series authorized for use in individuals ages 18 and older. Those who receive the Pfizer vaccine will be scheduled to get their second dose at the Saratoga County Public Health office on a later date.

•Board of Supervisors Chairman Todd Kusnierz announced the replacement of Supervisor Tara Gaston as both Chair and Member of the Health & Human Services Committee with the appointments of Supervisor Darren O’Connor and Supervisor Sandra Winney, respectively, in those positions through the end of the calendar year. Kusnierz also announced the replacement of Gaston as member of the Law & Finance Committee with Supervisor Joseph Grasso.

• The Board approved a resolution that authorized the execution of agreements for the

provision of School Resource Officer services with the following school districts: Ballston Spa Central School District, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District, Corinth Central School District, Galway Central School District, Mechanicville City School District, Schuylerville Central School District, South Glens Falls Central School District and Shenendehowa Central School District, and Saratoga Springs City School District for the assignment of Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Department Road Patrol Deputies as School Resource Officers.

Previous school district agreements expired on June 30, 2021.

The renewal of each agreement provides up to 12 Road Patrol Deputies to the school districts, subject to each school district agreeing to be pay to the County $74,093.75 per assigned Deputy Sheriff serving in the capacity of School Resource Officer for 20212022 school year to cover the school district’s pro-rata share of the County’s employee, transportation, equipment and patrol car costs for each assigned deputy.

The agreement commences with the 2021-2022 school year and is subject to the approval of the County Attorney and the Saratoga County Sheriff.

Our History, Our Story

Confucius said, “True wisdom is knowing what you don’t know.”

Despite growing up in Saratoga’s west side, when Renee Moore was dining downtown, people didn’t know she actually lived here, they assumed she was just visiting. The reason why was the color of her skin.

Experiences like this were just part of the reason why she founded Solomon Northup Day in 1999.

AN EXTRAORDINARY STORY Today, the population of Saratoga is nearly 92% white, according to the latest census data, so you might not know the extent to which African-Americans and other people of color lived and worked throughout the community, or how their history has shaped the city we know today.

Much of this history has been lost, but thanks to Renee Moore’s dedication, the story of Solomon Northup lives on.

Solomon Northup was born free in Minerva. While living and working in Saratoga Springs in 1841, he was illegally sold into slavery. After being rescued, he shared the ordeal that he (and others under the yoke of slavery) experienced in his autobiography, Twelve Years a Slave.

STRONGER TOGETHER Moore first heard Northup’s story told in a 1984 docudrama based on his book. Thus began her quest to recognize Northup in a way that would bring the community closer together.

“No one was talking about African-American history in the city and it was not embraced in the early years. Not only did I have very little support, but I did every aspect of it myself,” said Moore.

Interest peaked and Skidmore College (Moore’s alma mater) hosted a flurry of talks and other events in town.

A historical marker for Northup now stands near the intersection of Broadway and Congress Streets by the Saratoga Springs Visitor Center. Inside, you can see a placard and pick-up a handout with more information.

THEIR STORY IS OUR STORY To further discover and explore the history of people of color in the city, a walking tour and a free OURstory Treasure Hunt Map, published by MLK Saratoga, is available.

Points of interest include Mouzon House, Hattie’s Chicken Shack, and High Rock Park’s Tree of Peace, among others.

The OURstory Treasure Hunt was conceived by diversity advocate/trainer Jean Fei, with help from author Carol Daggs, into a 10-site adventure as an inclusive, family-oriented activity.

“We cannot truly know ourselves and how we have arrived where we are today until we re-weave the very fabric of OUR shared story — a much more colorful, vibrant and extraordinary tapestry of Humanity than our history books, classrooms, and memories have represented over the centuries,” said Lezlie Dana, President and Co-Chair of MLK Saratoga.

“Every single life is important. You have to look at the whole picture,” said Moore.

CELEBRATED ON THE BIG SCREEN

Turbulence around race has erupted in recent years, and the number of people taking to the streets to protest has increased. Saratoga is not immune, as demonstrations like last week’s “Take Back the Narrative,” which resulted in five arrests, illustrates.

In April 2013, PLAN B/Searchlight Pictures contacted Moore for background information and help reaching out to Northup’s descendants for a film they were producing. The movie, also called 12 Years a Slave, was that year’s Oscar award winner.

“There are no winners in the continued dialogue of ‘us against them’ that robs us from dealing with the real crisis’ we must face together as one country united.”

Eventually, she was joined by several “very special souls” who helped her make July’s Solomon Northup Day a reality.

“Everyone suffers when our country is at odds with itself,” said Moore.

WHAT SOLOMON WOULD SAY Widely-debated and controversial topics such as mass incarceration and qualified immunity show that despite how far we’ve come as a country, there are still changes to be made.

“It’s my guess that if Solomon Northup were alive today, he might be disappointed with our lack of progress toward freedom and justice so many years later. Right now, regardless of our skin color, we as Americans are watching a chipping away of our one guaranteed freedom; the Right to Vote. This is not solely a black issue, however, but an issue that affects us all as Americans,” said Moore.

GlobalFoundries Announces Expansion: Plans to Build New Fab in Private-Public Partnership MALTA — GlobalFoundries announced its expansion plans for its most advanced manufacturing facility in upstate New York over the coming years. The plans include immediate investments to address the global chip shortage at its existing Fab 8 facility as well as construction of a new fab on the same campus that will double the site’s capacity.

The announcement was made July 19 as the company convened leaders from government and industry to progress the national discussion around solving U.S. semiconductor supply chain

challenges. CEO Tom Caulfield was joined by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo, former Pentagon officials, and executives from leading companies throughout the semiconductor supply chain.

GF will invest $1 billion to immediately add an additional 150,000 wafers per year within its existing fab to help address the global chip shortage and plans to construct a new fab that will create more than 1,000 new direct hightech jobs and thousands more indirect jobs including high-paying

construction jobs for the region, according to the company.

Following the successful investment model of Fab 8, GF is planning to fund the new facility through private-public partnerships including customers, federal and state investments. This new capacity will serve the growing demand for secure, featurerich chips needed by high-growth markets including automotive, 5G connectivity and the Internet of Things. The facility will also support national security requirements for a secure supply chain.

The company recently announced a new fab in Singapore and $1 billion planned investment to expand in Germany as part of its broader global expansion plans to meet the growing demand from customers worldwide.

Why Are CD Rates So Low?

Continuum Wealth Advisors for Saratoga TODAY Fresh out of college, I secured my first job as a personal banker for a national retail bank. A common complaint I heard in my first few months was that CD rates had started to fall below 5%. What we wouldn’t give for a risk-free 5% now, right? If we go further back in time, folks who were around in the 80s will tell of double-digit rates on both their CDs and their mortgages. Let’s examine the driving forces behind why rates are what they are.

The story starts with the Federal Reserve (“the Fed”), America’s central bank. They serve many functions but one of their most visible is setting the interest rate that banks charge each other for overnight loans, known as the Federal Funds Rate. This rate

impacts a lot which is why it is so widely discussed. It is currently set to a range of 0.00-0.25%. Without getting into the inner workings, think of the rate as a dial for the economy. If the Fed believes that the economy needs a boost, it will set interest rates lower to make money flow more freely (as it did during the onset of the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020). They do the opposite when there is a risk of the economy “overheating” and inflation becoming a problem. It is a delicate balancing act as they try to keep the economy running on all cylinders while at the same time making sure inflation is in check.

“Thanks for that,” you say, “but I asked about my six-month CD paying 0.45%.” Fair enough.

As was previously mentioned, the Federal Funds Rate is the rate charged for overnight loans between banks and it provides a starting point for setting rates that carry longer times to maturity, like your six-month CD. Typically, the longer something is held, the more that the person lending that money will require in terms of payment. As a purchaser of a CD, you are effectively lending money to the bank and the rate they are willing to pay will be slightly higher than the Federal Funds Rate. As such, as long as the Fed Funds Rate stays pinned to the floor as it currently is, do not expect the interest rates on CDs, money markets, or savings

An unfortunate side effect of low rates is that those who need steady income (i.e., retirees) have seen the interest they can generate from these safe holdings dwindle to near nothing. However, it is all relative, and times of elevated rates on CDs are typically accompanied by either high current or expected inflation. A CD earning

6% per year while inflation is 7% is technically losing money overall. Let me conclude by saying that the percentage of your wealth to be held in these short-term instruments should be viewed through the lens of your personal financial picture. Hold too much and your risk becomes inflation. Hold too little and your risk becomes stock or bond market

fluctuations. Much like the setting of those interest rates, it is a delicate balancing act.

Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Request for Nominations SARATOGA SPRINGS — At the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation’s Annual Meeting in September, the Foundation will recognize individuals and organizations who have invested significant time and money to undertake preservation projects in the past year. The Preservation Recognition Awards celebrate the winners’ hard work and commitment to being good

stewards of their property with members of the community and friends of the Foundation.

The Foundation seeks nominations for projects that reflect a dedication to preserving, developing, and reusing historic buildings and landscapes. Those nominated may be individuals, organizations, businesses, or community representatives. Nominations will be assessed by the Awards Committee

according to the following criteria: project design sensitivity to the historic character and environment of the property; project execution represents appropriate techniques and preservation practice; degree of difficulty faced and appropriateness of solutions were applied.

The nominated project must be located in the City of Saratoga Springs, but does not have to be located in a historic district.

Buildings must be 50 years or older and projects can range from small, removal of vinyl siding or restoring original wood windows, to large, an entire building rehabilitation or adaptive-reuse. Additions to historic buildings and new infill construction can also be nominated. All projects must have been completed within the past year.

The Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association has recognized the winners of the Celebrate Saratoga window decorating contest, sponsored by NYRA. Participating local businesses in downtown Saratoga decorated their storefronts in a racing theme for the contest.

“The collaboration between the Downtown Business Association and NYRA represents the community collaboration that is so important in a city like ours,” said Heidi OwenWest, Vice President of the Saratoga Springs Downtown Business Association.

The decorations were judged on July 14 by volunteer judges Liz Bishop, Walt Adams, and Tom Durkin. The winners were announced during opening weekend at the track, on Saturday, July 17, in the winner’s circle.

First place went to Lifestyles of Saratoga, who won two tickets to the Rail at 1863 club, including buffet and lunch. Second place went to Tailgate and Party, who won two Clubhouse Reserved Seats. And, third place went to G. Willikers, who won two Grandstand Reserved Seats.

Owen-West, who is also the owner of Lifestyles of Saratoga, and her team decorated their storefront as a tribute to Marylou Whitney. There was no racing season in 2020, following her passing in 2019, and so Owen-West and her team came up with the idea to honor her.

“It feels great winning, but most important were the comments,” said Owen-West.

“People have walked in and choked up with tears and thanked us for our tribute to Marylou Whitney. It really feels like Saratoga is back and racing again.”

Ballston Spa Class of 2021 Earn New York State Seal of Biliteracy BALLSTON SPA — Seventyfive graduating students in the Ballston Spa High School Class of 2021 recently qualified for the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) and received the seal on their diploma at the BSHS graduation ceremony in June.

One student at each school was presented with the Maurice “Christopher” Morley Literacy Award. This award initiative honors the legacy of Village History Consultant Mr. Morley and is awarded to four students moving up from the elementary schools in the Ballston Spa Central School District to the Middle School who have demonstrated exceptional

determination and perseverance on the road to reading. This award includes a recognition certificate along with a gift certificate to a local bookstore.

The State Military Museum Wants You SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Friends of the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center is looking for people interested in becoming a museum docent now that the museum has reopened to the public after being closed for more than a year because of the pandemic.

NYSSB in 2012 to recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English. It is the sixth year the Ballston Spa High School has provided the opportunity for students to earn the NYSSB. The NYSSB is awarded by

Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs.

A docent helps visitors to the museum. He or she explains the exhibit layout and answers visitors' questions. The Friends of the New York State Military Museum, a non-profit organization that supports programs at the museum, said a docent generally has an interest in military history and may

be passionate about some aspect of the nation's military history.

Those interested in becoming a docent can call the museum bookstore at 518-226-0490 or stop by the museum in person.

The museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The museum is closed Sunday and Monday. Admission is free.

BSNB Names Student Interns for 2021 BALLSTON SPA — Ballston Spa National Bank recently welcomed the arrival of three student interns at their Corporate Offices in Ballston Spa. Yangling (Harrison) Huang of Fuzhou, Fujian in China will be interning with the retail banking department. Huang, a senior at the University at Albany, plans to graduate in May 2022 as a double major in actuarial science and studio art along with a minor in economics.

Anthony LaBarbera of Haverstraw, will be interning with the marketing department. Going

into his junior year at Siena College, LaBarbera plans to graduate in May 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing along with concentrations in market research analytics, digital marketing, and marketing communications.

Kellyn Briggs of Rexford will be interning with the loan servicing department.

Going into her senior year at Siena College, Briggs plans to graduate in May 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in management along with concentrations in applied leadership, strategic

communication, and strategic human resource development.

The year-round paid internship program has been active at BSNB since 2013. Positions are open to undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year, and are pursuing degrees in marketing, business or finance.

Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. The interns are responsible for a wide variety of tasks and are expected to work up to 16 hours a week during the school semester and full-time during breaks and over summer vacation.

nsuring that fresh, local, and healthy foods are accessible to the local community is a top priority for farmers’ markets. Thankfully, there are various programs available that can help bridge the gap.

Year-round at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s Wednesday and Saturday markets, customers who own an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card can exchange their SNAP benefits for farmers’ market tokens to purchase fresh foods, including fruit and vegetables, bread and baked goods, meat, fish, and poultry, dairy products, honey and maple products, and value-added foods like soup mixes, sauces, and jams and jellies. Herb plants and plants that produce food are also approved purchases with EBT coins. The market additionally offers SNAP incentive programs, such as FreshConnect, that provide extra coupons or tokens to spend, meaning customers receive more value than they spend. With FreshConnect, every $5 a customer spends with their EBT benefits; they receive a $2 FreshConnect coupon to spend at the farmers’ market.

More seasonally, the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is a New York State program that offers WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) participants and seniors coupons to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at the farmers’ market.

Our local WIC office distributes WIC coupons.

Senior coupons will be distributed by the Saratoga County Office for the Aging on-site at the Saratoga

market on Saturday, August 7 (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) and Wednesday, August 11 (3-5 p.m.) at High Rock Park. The Office for the Aging will also distribute the coupons at the Clifton Park market on Monday, July 26 (2-5 p.m.) and Monday, August 16 (2-5 p.m.) at the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church.

Individuals aged 60+ who live on a limited income may pick up a booklet of coupons containing five $4 coupons (limit one per person).

To spend your WIC or Senior FMNP coupons at the market, look for the blue poster at participating vendors’ stalls or simply stop by the market information table for a complete list of farms accepting FMNP coupons. The FMNP season runs from June through October, after which unused coupons expire.

Utilizing the available nutrition assistance programs is a win-win-win situation. Low-income consumers have more access to healthy foods, local farmers gain income and connect with new customers, and more food dollars stay in the local economy.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a wok or large skillet, add 1 Tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add bell pepper, peas, carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, and bok choy. Sauté 2-3 minutes until veggies are almost tender.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar, sesame oil, chicken or vegetable broth, and cornstarch.

3. Pour over veggies and cook until the sauce has thickened.

Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired NOTES: • Customize your stir fry by adding in protein. Chicken, pork, shrimp, and beef are all available at the farmers’ market.

• Make your stir fry with seasonal vegetables: asparagus, bean sprouts, cauliflower, tomatoes, corn all make delicious additions.

• Spice it up by adding crushed red pepper flakes or sriracha.

• Serve over brown or white rice, noodles, ramen, lo mein, zoodles, or wilted greens.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Grilling up burgers is a summertime staple for many of us. How do you like your burgers? When you got your burger fresh off the grill and sitting there all juicy and delicious on that bun… how do you make this perfect food even more perfect? Cheese is a good choice. But which one? American? Cheddar? Swiss?

Maybe some crisp, smoky bacon. How about barbecue sauce? We could go on forever. Making hamburgers seems like something that should be simple—how hard can it be to cook those beefy delights? Yet somehow, nailing the perfect burger can elude even the most seasoned home cook. Make the patty too thick and you risk biting into a raw mess. Leave it on the heat for too long, and it’ll end up dry. The secret to making juicy burgers at home is all in the meat. Did you burn your burgers while cooking them? The culprit is likely uneven thickness. While the shape of the patty doesn’t matter, the thickness does. You really want to make sure the patty is a uniform, even thickness, or it’s not going to cook properly, which can lead to a burnt outside and undercooked inside. A solution could be to flatten the patties by pressing them flat using a burger press.

Burger presses create consistently shaped and sized burgers. The presses allow you to pack patties without squishing the meat between your warm hands. Heat radiated by your hands can cause proteins to denature.

Using your hands to pack raw meat can cause the fat to melt and the meat to break apart which causes a mushy, unappealing texture when it’s time to devour your burger. The burger presses make uniform patties: same weight and diameter every time. Uniform patties cook evenly throughout and will come to temperature around the same time on the grill.

The presses also help achieve the weight you’re going for ¼, ⅓, and ½ lb patties. And you get a prettier burger patty. The burgers look good. Who doesn’t marvel at a perfectly round, evenly dense patty?

r e m m u S Easy Burgers INGREDIENTS • 2 pounds ground beef (80% lean / 20% fat)

• 4 hamburger buns

• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

• TOPPINGS: pickles, tomato, onion, cheese, cooked bacon slices, as desired

• 2 teaspoons minced onion • kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, and onion in a large bowl.

2. Shape ground beef into 4 patties with a hamburger press then season with salt and pepper.

3. Heat cast iron skillet to medium-high.

4. Cook patties on hot skillet or grill to desired doneness, about 6 to 8 minutes per side for medium.

5. Serve burgers on buns; top each with pickles, tomato, onion, cheese, and bacon slices as desired.

6. Serve immediately.

High Rock Park, High Rock Ave., Saratoga Springs 10:30 a.m. – 12 pm. | Join Charlie Kuenzel, president of the Saratoga Springs History Museum and our tour leader, to learn about the history of the waters.

Saratoga Springs was a top tourist destination in the 1800’s because of its mineral springs. Known as a premier health resort, Saratoga attracted the rich and famous to drink and bathe in the healing waters. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain.

Tours will be limited to 30; tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF

The History Center welcomes instrumentalists from the American Federation of Musicians to perform two concerts at Brookside Museum. Racing City Chorus Performs “Barbershop on Broadway” Downtown on Thursday Nights SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Racing City Chorus, with their A Cappella “Barbershopstyle” singing, performs consecutive Thursday evenings on Broadway through Aug. 26.

“The Chorus will be entertaining crowds from all walks of life who love to hear barbershop a cappella harmony being sung on Broadway,” says Racing City Chorus President Rusty Senecal.

“One of the most rewarding things we do is sing to audiences and experience the positive responses it creates in youngsters and adults.”

The Racing City Chorus is a men’s singing organization that meets regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun.

Nacre Dance Group Offers Half and Full-Day Summer Dance Camps SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nacre Dance Group hosts a 2021 summer dance camp, August 2-6, with half-day or full-day options in Contemporary Dance or Classical Ballet for dancers ages 13-19 with dance experience.

The morning program (9 a.m.

- noon) takes students from technique class to rehearsal challenging dancers to make connections between training and performance. Students will learn choreography by Nacre Dance Artists Beth Fecteau (Classical Ballet) and Danielle Selby (Contemporary Dance). Students will broaden their dance training, expand their dance knowledge and vocabulary.

The afternoon program (12:30-3:30 p.m.) will be devoted to the exploration of choreography

as students explore their creative voice through a codified choreography curriculum created by Nacre faculty. While learning the building blocks of choreography students will successfully create a dance piece of their own.

The fundraising party, held on the eve of opening day at the Saratoga Race Course, featured a presentation ceremony posthumously

honoring Marylou Whitney and Chef Tom Dillon, as well as recognizing Tiz the Law, Sackatoga Stable, Jack Knowlton, Barclay Tagg, Robin Smullin, Heather Smullin and Manny Franco. The event is a benefit for the Center for Disability Services Foundation, Inc.

The Center for Disability Services is a resource for people of all ages who have disabilities or healthrelated conditions and their families.

The Center has a 79-year history in the Capital Region, North Country and beyond. It is known as the place where people get better at life.

Hasan Minhaj Live at New Rock Poster Exhibit Opens at SPAC; On Display through July 30 Capital Repertory Theatre SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Jefferson Airplane, Bo Diddley, and The Doors are among the musical legends whose names cling, often in a creative, spiraling fashion to the posters of a new exhibition at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Chromatic Scales: Psychedelic Design from the Tang Teaching Museum Collection features more than 30 recently acquired 1960s San Francisco psychedelic rock concert posters designed by artists such as Jim Blashfield, Lee Conklin, and Bonnie MacLean, and the Big Five’s Wes Wilson and Victor Moscoso.

The collection, which opened July 19, will be on view in SPAC’s new “The Pines” facility lobby and includes show of the era’s legendary west coast venues The Matrix, Avalon Ballroom, and the Fillmore Auditorium.

ROCKTOGA 2021: Benefit for Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital Aug. 1 at Malta Drive-In

MALTA — A full afternoon of music is slated to be staged at the Inaugural ROCKTOGA benefit - a family-friendly event with proceeds to benefit the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.

The Melodies Center is the only provider of care for children and teens with cancer and blood disorders in 25 counties in the Capital Region and beyond.

The event takes place noon to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1 on the grounds of the Malta Drive-In, 2785 U.S. Rt. 9, Malta.

The music lineup includes

ALBANY — Comedian Hasan Minhaj showcases and prepares new material for his new one man show in an intimate setting at Capital Repertory Theatre Aug. 5 – 8.

Hasan Minhaj was the host and creator of the weekly comedy show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj that premiered on Netflix in October 2018. The series explored the modern cultural and political landscape with depth and sincerity through his unique comedic voice.

The show received a 2019 Peabody Award, a 2019 Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Motion Design,” and was recognized for a 2020 Television Academy Honor.

In 2017, Minhaj earned rave reviews for his performance hosting the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and for his one-hour Netflix comedy special Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming

King, which earned him a 2018 Peabody Award.

A first generation American, Minhaj joined The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a correspondent in November 2014, where he was Jon’s last hire. He continued on in that role after Trevor Noah took over as host the following year and remained on the show through August 2018.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Squeeze, featuring Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook have announced a 24-date headlining adventure - interspersed with 18 support dates for Daryl Hall & John Oates – that will be staged on Aug. 15 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

“I'm so excited to be back on stage and in the thick of our wonderful set list of songs,” said Chris Difford, in a statement.

eek three of the 2021 racing season at Saratoga Race Course beginning July 28 will contain 8 stakes races, 5 of which are graded.

The highlight is expected to be the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at the sprint distance of 6 furlongs, but the richest race will be the Grade II Jim Dandy for three-year-olds at one mile and an eighth.

Both will be run on Saturday. The full week offers stakes races at a wide array of distances, surfaces, ages and gender.

The biggest race of the week will be Saturday’s Grade II Jim Dandy at a mile and an eighth for three-yearolds. The race is named after the winner of the 1930 Travers – Jim Dandy - who pulled off one of the most famous upsets in racing history. The longest shot in a small field of four, Jim Dandy defeated Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox and multiple Saratoga winner Whichone. Taking advantage of a sloppy track that he relished and a speed duel between the two favorites, Jim Dandy bounded up along the rail to an astonishing winning margin of 8 lengths at odds of 100-1. Legend has it that the win was such a windfall for the bookmakers and so devastating a loss for the betting public that many fans left immediately for the train station to return south to New York City. Attempting to save the remainder of the race meet the suddenly flush bookmakers sent people to intercept the dejected fans before they boarded the train. With promises of free meals and free drinks all night at local establishments many bettors did return to town to drown their sorrows. The phrase heard for many years of “that was a Jim Dandy of a night!” paid homage to the Travers winner and the circumstances that ensued. The gambit of the bet takers was successful as once Monday rolled around the New York City bettors had forgotten their losses and faced a fresh week of betting challenges.

Traditionally a prep race for the Travers’ Stakes to be later in the meet (eleven runners have won both), the $600,000 purse assures a quality field and this year the expected favorite is Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality. The Godolphin homebred has won 6 of 7 lifetime races, with his only loss coming in a good effort in the Kentucky Derby. Widely considered the best three-year-old in the country – wins in the Jim Dandy and Travers would assure his spot as champion three-year-old of 2021.

The Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap also on the Saturday card is a top-notch Grade I affair. This sprint at 6 furlongs offers a purse of $350,000 and is named after racing icon Alfred G. Vanderbilt Jr., the former Chairman of the Board of the New York Racing Association and owner of Champion racehorse Native Dancer. This race is a handicap race with runners carrying different weights to make the race competitive among all runners. The expected high weight and race favorite is Whitmore an 8-year-old gelding who won last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint and was named Champion Sprinter of the Year. Whitmore was second in this race last year and despite being second in two of his three starts this year seems to have maintained his form. A winner of 15 races and $4.4 million, Whitmore is a fan favorite and is taken to find the winner’s circle here as he seeks to make it to the Breeders’ Cup sprint again to defend his title.

FRIDAY’S stakes race is a restricted stake named after Curlin at a mile and one-eighth. This race is restricted to aspiring three-year-olds who have not won a stakes race at over a mile in 2021. Despite its restricted status, the Curlin has produced Travers runners in the past.

any new trainers find it challenging to win their first race, especially with a small stable.

Michelle Giangiulio’s experience is not much different.

However, along with trying to get her first career victory, she has a difficult time of keeping horses.

Since becoming a trainer earlier this year, Giangiulio started four separate horses. While each horse ran well with either a second- or third-place finish, three of those horses have been taken by other owners or trainers through the claiming box.

Wagon Boss was the latest horse taken from her following his third-place finish in the first race of Saratoga Race Course’s Opening Day card.

After the race, Giangiulio went into the racing office and learned that 11 trainers submitted a $12,500 claim for the 8-year-old gelding. Eventually, Jeffrey Englehart became the new owner and trainer of Wagon Boss after the “shake,” a lottery process used when there are multiple claims on a horse.

“I went into the racing office, and it was packed. I didn’t realize they were shaking on my horse,” she said. “My

horses keep getting claimed and we are losing shakes. It is tough when you have only 3-4 horses, then you lose one.

The hardest part is keeping stock. You never know when you will get another one in [the stable].”

Giangiulio fell into that situation with her first career start and just one horse: Parade Field. She entered that 5-year-old gelding for a $20,000 claiming tag at Aqueduct on Feb. 15.

After Parade Field was claimed with his third-place finish, that put her in a difficult situation – no horse to train.

It took a couple of months for Giangiulio to regroup with the help of Marshall Gramm, a founding partner of Ten Strike Racing, Associate Professor in Economics at Rhodes College and two-time qualifier for the National Handicapping Championships. Along with Wagon Boss, Gramm sent her two other horses: Easy Shot and True Castle.

“Marshall Gramm has been so great by sending me horses,” Giangiulio said. “He has been really trying to help me out.

He’s really supportive. He actually sent Wagon Boss to Indiana Grand after he claimed him. He told me this horse might be OK going long at Saratoga for $12,500. He looked fantastic.”

While it can be discouraging to lose horses through the claiming box, Giangiulio has a sense of affirmation knowing that owners and trainers are interested in her horses because of their condition going into a race.

“I think it says a lot,” Giangiulio said. “The horses look

good. They are running well. Every horse that I have run, except for True Castle, has been claimed. Everyone tells me that it is a good thing. It feels good that someone takes my horses because they are in the right spot. At the same time, it’s part of the mixed emotions because I lose a horse.”

Since being a child and teenager, Giangiulio has always enjoyed being around horses. The South New Jersey native started working and riding show horses while going to Hammonton High School.

After graduating from high school, she became interested in working with Thoroughbreds and crossed the Delaware River to Parx Racing, just north of Philadelphia where Juan Carlos Guerrera, trainer of the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile champion Spun to Run, hired her as a groom and an assistant.

Giangiulio got her first glimpse of New York racing in 2014 when she travelled with Guerrera to bring Classic Giacnroll to Aqueduct for the Jerome Stakes and Withers Stakes. Attracted to the New York racing scene, Giangiulio left Parx for Aqueduct and Belmont to work for various trainers, including Chad Brown, Jena Antonucci, Joe Sharp, Thomas Morley, and Kelly Breen.

Giangiulio did not come to Saratoga until 2016 when she was an assistant to Sharp. While Sharp spent most of that season staying in Kentucky, she helped the stable win four races that meet.

“We had a good meet that year,” she said. “Joe had a second baby, so he wasn’t up here as much. I had to run everything up here. We had a solid team. It was fun. From Parx to Belmont, that was a big jump.

When I went from Belmont to Saratoga, I said, ‘I am in the big leagues.’ It was awesome.”

That is not the only awesome experience for Giangiulio since coming to New York. Three years ago, she got a chance to see one of her favorite horses who made history: Triple Crown winner Justify.

She had always been fond of the son of Scat Daddy after winning his debut with a 9 ½-length margin in 1:21.86 for seven furlongs at Santa Anita. While Giangiulio was working for Morley, Justify was stabled across the street at John Terranova’s barn prior to the Belmont Stakes.

“I absolutely fell in love with Justify,” she said. “When he first ran, I knew he was going to be a Triple Crown winner. The way he was put together was perfection.

He was stunning and a monster of a horse.”

REQUIEM FOR A RACE RIDER

J

ohn Rotz passed away at the age of eighty-six just days before this year’s racing season began at Saratoga.

Many of those from a younger generation probably glanced over the many testimonials that were written about him. Those who have a passing interest in horse racing may have heard the name.

Then there are the horse racing fans that lived during the era that brought him fame and the respect of his peers. The news surely brought back fond memories to those who witnessed his expertise on the racetrack.

It was the 1960’s and 70’s, when many of the greatest jockeys of all

time plied their trade at racetracks across the country. During that timeframe, a claiming race at Saratoga could count seven, sometimes eight future Hall of Fame riders vying for the winner’s circle. Eddie Arcaro and Willie Shoemaker led the way. They were the masters of their chosen trade. Then there were Bobby Ussery and Manuel Ycaza. Both had flair and nerves of steel. Eric Guerin of Native Dancer fame and Bill Boland, who captured the Kentucky Derby at age sixteen were veterans that had the skills to compete with the best.

Then came Braulio Baeza, Angel Cordero, Jorge Valesquez, and Jacinto Vasquez. They arrived here from Panama and Puerto Rico to show off their talent and reap the financial rewards that America would offer. For the better part of two decades, John Rotz would match his riding skills with all of them.

He was nicknamed “Gentleman John” out of respect for his quiet and unassuming demeanor. Do not think for one second that those are the only qualities that defined him. John Rotz was a topnotch, professional race rider. His skills were honed the hard way. He worked his way to success taking the old-fashioned route. As a teenager in Illinois,

“...Rotz cemented himself as one of the go-to riders on the racing scene.” he landed a job as a groom, then graduated to hot walker and later spent his early morning hours as an exercise rider.

In 1953 John launched his career as a jockey at the minor league tracks of the Midwest. By the late fifties he felt he had acquired the skills to hit the big time. He made the move to New York to test his mettle against the premier jockeys on the American turf at Belmont Park, Aqueduct, and Saratoga.

For the next fifteen years Rotz cemented himself as one of the go-to riders on the racing scene.

A quick glance as his Wikipedia page lists the stakes races that he won in his career. It is a remarkable look at many of horse racing’s most sought-after prizes.

The 1962 Preakness Stakes is the race that Rotz is most remembered for. He had the mount on Greek Money. In a stretch duel with his counterpart Manny Ycaza aboard Ridan, he was nearly thrown over the inside rail due to the rough riding antics of the fiery Panamanian. He was able to keep his mount steadied and nailed his first of two Triple Crown Events by a whisker. Hounded by reporters after the race, he was asked repeatedly about Ycaza’s flagrant ride in the stretch run. He refused to comment on the subject. It was just another example of why he was called “Gentleman John.”

Bloom, and this writer’s favorite champion Mongo. He reached the pinnacle of his success when he led the country in stakes race wins for both 1969 and 1970.

Due to physical problems Rotz hung up his tack in 1973. He had done it all. From his beginnings as a groom to reaching the top rung of his profession, he had earned the respect of the owners, trainers, and the many jockeys that he had competed with on a world class level.

Ten years later in August of 1983, John Rotz became the sixty-first jockey to be inducted into Horse Racing’s Hall of Fame located here on Union Avenue. It was a well-deserved and fitting tribute to this Gentleman from Illinois.

PATERSON, NJ — Athletes from the Glenville-based Jason Morris Judo Center won 17 overall medals including seven Gold at the 16th Annual Summer Slam Judo Championships held at the JFK High School in Paterson, NJ on Sunday, July 18.

Kyle Tran (15) led the way - winning Gold in the 15-16yrs.

The Wesley Foundation DEC to Host 10th Annual Great to Host “Saratoga 9 and Hudson River Fish Count Wine” Gold Fundraiser

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Wesley Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Wesley Community in Saratoga Springs, will host its second golf fundraiser “Saratoga 9 and Wine” on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at the Saratoga Lake Golf Club.

The event is a nine-hole scramble format golf outing with two tournaments being played on the front and back nine holes simultaneously. In addition, the event will feature wine and spirits tastings along the course, as well as other contests and activities.

Funds raised through the event will benefit The Campaign For Springs to renovate the Springs Building at Wesley Health Care Center. The project will create a contemporary, efficient, and home-like environment on the building’s second, third, and fourth floors. Phase one of the project was completed in 2016.

NEW YORK — New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos has announced that the tenth annual Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count will take place at multiple sites along the banks of the Hudson River on Saturday, July 31.

“I encourage New Yorkers and visitors to get outdoors or go online and enjoy this opportunity to learn about the fish living in the Hudson River,” Commissioner Seggos said. “With sites from New York Harbor to Waterford, there are plenty of great spots to choose from to participate in the annual fish count close to home.”

The public is invited to join naturalists from the Capital Region to New York City to explore the variety of creatures usually hidden below the river’s surface. Fresh upriver and salty at New York City, the Hudson River’s estuary and watershed are home to more than 200 fish species, including several that migrate into the river from the Atlantic Ocean each spring to spawn. Eleven sites will offer inperson opportunities for the public and three will livestream the fish count on DEC’s Facebook page.

and checking out the fish, crabs, and other river-life caught in its mesh. Participants may watch from shore or jump into available waterproof waders and help pull in the net. The fish are released after everyone has a chance to see them up close.

Participating groups share their catch results by posting to the DEC Twitter feed with the hashtag #hudsonriverfishcount.

Comparing notes builds understanding of the diversity of fishes and habitats in the Hudson, the vitality of the estuarine ecosystem in urban and rural settings, and the influence of salinity and tides.

Build your skills. From your first steps on the ice through advanced skills, the Intro. to Ice Skating program will prepare you for more specialized forms of ice skating.

This program is designed as a parent/child activity.

This clinic will cover the necessary beginner fundamentals of throwing, fielding, hitting, and base running.

Field Hockey League is geared towards the individual looking to learn the sport through drills and team play. Tuesday’s session will focus on skill development and Saturday’s session will focus on team play.

This is for ages 3 and up. Early fall dates are Oct. 5 through Nov. 9 on Tuesdays from 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Fall dates are Nov. 16 through Dec. 21 (no Nov. 27). Fall times (choose one) are Tuesdays from 4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. or Saturdays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Location is Vernon and Weibel Ice Rinks (30 Weibel Avenue). Before Sept. 27 (for early fall dates) and Nov. 8 (for fall dates), fees are $65 for City residents and $85 for non-City residents. After Sept.

This clinic will run Sept. 15 through Oct. 20, and is for ages 3-5. Center at 15 Vanderbilt Ave. Players will need water, a stick, shin guards, and mouth guard. *All participants will be supplied with the necessary equipment if they do not own it.

Skate rental fees are $5 per class; punch card (good for current sessions only) is $25.

You will need snow or fleece pants, a warm jacket, mittens or gloves, and a bike, ski, or hockey helmet (required for all). A responsible adult must accompany beginning skaters on the ice to assist with instruction. Adults do not need skates.

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame has introduced new tours and events for the summer racing season. This will be the first summer track season at Saratoga that the Museum and Hall of Fame is open, following recent renovations.

The Museum and Hall of Fame opened back up on Sept.

5, 2020. Included in the renovations was digitalizing the Hall of Fame. Jockeys and trainers have long careers, and according to Cate Masterson, Director of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, not only has digitalizing the Hall of Fame allowed them to save space for future members, but it is easier to update the accomplishments of said jockeys and trainers.

Some other notable things the Museum has to offer this summer are as follows: Tom Durkin, legendary track announcer, will be giving guided museum tours Wednesday and Sundays through Sept. 6, and Oklahoma Training Track tours will also be offered through Sept.

Author signings will include Bill Heller signing copies of “Fred Hopper: The Extraordinary Life of a Thoroughbred Legend” on Friday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to Noon, and Lenny Shulman signing copies of “Head to Head: Conversations With a Generation of Horse Racing Legends on Friday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Both books will be available for purchase in the Museum’s gift shop.

For its summer film schedule, the Museum’s new signature film, What It Takes: Journey to

the Hall of Fame, will be shown eight times daily at half past the hour beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a final showing at 4:30 p.m.

Upcoming this summer also, is the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame induction ceremony that will be open to the public and free to attend. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 6 at Fasig-Tipton. Seats are limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. It will also be livestreamed on the Museum’s website.

“The Museum would like to thank Fasig-Tipton for their longtime support and use of their beautiful facility for the Hall of Fame ceremony, especially as they celebrate their 100th year of the Saratoga Sale this summer,” said Masterson. “It’s a special place to host such an important event as the Hall of Fame ceremony. We are really looking forward to honoring the 2020 and 2021 inductees on Aug. 6.”

This induction ceremony will honor both the 2020 and 2021 Hall of Fame classes. The 2020 inductees include racehorses Tom Bowling and Wise Dan; jockey Darrel McHargue; trainer Mark Casse; and Pillars of the Turf Alice Headley Chandler, J. Keene Daingerfield, Jr., and George D. Widener, Jr. The 2021 class is comprised of racehorse American Pharaoh, and trainer Jack Fisher and Todd Pletcher.

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Blue Friday of New York will hold its 10th Annual Fallen Officers Memorial Ride on Saturday, Aug. 7.

This year’s 75-mile ride will honor two fallen officers – Detective Sergeant Randall French, Special Operations Section of the Troy Police Department and Corrections Officer Joseph A. Martini, Ulster County Sheriff ’s Department.

The ride goes through five counties, starting at Spitzie’s on Central Avenue in Colonie.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. and kickstands will go up at Noon. It is $20 per bike and passenger, all vehicles are welcome.

Additionally, at Nanola on Route 9 in Malta, there will be food and drink available for purchase, a 50/50 drawing, and raffles, and a stop at Adirondack Harley-Davidson in Broadalbin.

Awards will be given for Best Represented Blue Knights Chapter, Best Represented Police Motor Unit, and Best Represented Motorcycle Club.

Warren County Sheriff ’s Department, New York State Police, Amsterdam Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff ’s Office, and Fulton County Sheriff ’s Office will all aid in escorting the ride.

ABOUT BLUE FRIDAY Blue Friday of New York, Inc. was formed in the Capital District in 2004 after two police officers in Albany and Schenectady lost their lives within a short span of time.

as a chapter of the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) after speaking to fellow police officers and other police unions, determining there was support and a need for this type of organization.

Their Mission Statement reads that Blue Friday of New York was “established to help assist the families of law enforcement officers who are killed or seriously injured in the line of duty as well as the families of officers who have died outside the line of duty if needed. Our goal is to make sure the family knows that ‘They are not forgotten and they will never stand alone’.”

Blue Friday also provides the following resources: survivor victimization issues and grief counseling, assisting families attending the National Police Memorial in

Washington, D.C., assisting law enforcement agencies or families in the paperwork process for a line of duty death, and training representatives of different law enforcement agencies on how to cope with and how to apply for the benefits for a line of duty death.

The last Friday in April is considered to be Blue Friday; a day set by the New York State Legislature each year to honor all law enforcement officers – those who have been killed in the line of duty and those still protecting and serving.

SARATOGA: OFF TO THE RACES SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sam the Bugler Grossman makes the first Call to the Post of the first race on Opening Day at Saratoga Race Course on July 15, 2021.

Opening Day marked the first time in nearly two years, general public attendance was allowed at Saratoga, which had operated last summer with no fans allowed, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Opening Day attendance was 27,760.
