tarks Desivigna Dake was born May 9,1852.

He died on November 10, 1937, at the family homestead in Middle Grove after a long illness. As stated in the Saratogian on November 11, 1937, Courageous to the last, he voted in the November 2 election at a polling place near his home.

Starks was a member of one of the oldest families to settle in Saratoga County. He was the son of Benjamin C. and Mary Jane Carmen Dake. He attended school in Daketown and, in the winter of 1869-70, attended the prominent Ft. Edward Collegiate Institute. In 1870 he won a scholarship to Cornell, where he studied civil engineering. He left college early to teach school in Eddy’s Corners, South Corinth, Greenfield Center, Middle Grove, and Chatfield Corners. In 1872 the enterprising Starks took up land surveying while still teaching. He would continue that occupation for the next 60 years.

In 1876 he was elected Justice of the Peace in the Town of Greenfield. He declined renomination after serving four years.

After leaving office, Starks would continue to share his expertise in the Justice’s Court by giving advice and counsel in law matters. In those years, there were few lawyers and limited transportation. It was common for men of expanded education and experience to assist the courts even though they were not members of the bar.

Married in 1874, Starks and Melvena B. Lyman Dake would have seven sons and four daughters. Two sons Percy W. and Charles V. would establish Dake’s Delicious Ice Cream in 1921.

The brothers went on to create Stewart’s Ice Cream with the purchase of Don K. Stewart’s Ballston dairy business in 1945.

Grandsons William P. and Charles S. would continue the ice cream legacy after the retirement of their father Charles V.

and uncle Percy. Today greatgrandson and Stewart’s Shops Corp. President Gary Dake continues to support the community where the family’s roots are deeply entrenched.

In the following Saratogian newspaper article from 1909, you will get a sense of the visionary trait that permeates the Dake family: The Daily Saratogian Tuesday, April 6, 1909 On April 6, 1909, Starks Dake of Middle Grove proposed a new canal in Saratoga County from Ballston to *Grangerville. The proposal was discussed at a meeting of Ballston Spa businessmen.

The pollution of Saratoga Lake was the impetus of Stark’s idea.

As an engineer Starks was present to speak on the matter of the storage reservoir on the headwaters of the Kayaderosseras Creek.

Mr. Dake explained the feasibility of erecting a dam across the Kayaderosseras above Middle Grove for the purpose of storing flood-water to be released in time of drought. This would secure an equalized flow of water in the

creek. Mr. Dake gave an estimate of the probable cost of the construction of the dam and the flowage rights. In discussing the subject of pollution of the creek, Mr. Dake stated that one of the troubles along the creek between Ballston Spa and the lake during low water is the almost stagnant condition of the water, the current being so sluggish. The creek twists and turns so often that to reach the lake, a distance of five miles, the creek runs ten miles with a fall of a little over twenty feet.

Mr. Dake suggested that to secure more current it would be practical to dredge a new channel to the lake, taking a straight course. By reducing the length of the creek to five miles the trouble of stagnant water would be obvious. He estimated this could be done for $15,000 and would be a comparatively easy matter.

In speaking of this work, he then mentioned how easy it would be to continue the work of dredging to the proposed barge canal at Grangerville (2 miles east of Schuylerville) and thus obtain a water freight connection for the industries of Ballston. canal, a feeder canal would be a very feasible project.

The proposal above never materialized, but the idea makes you think, “What if?”

Lillian Mae Hopkins LaVigne

Lillian Mae Hopkins LaVigne, 96, a resident of The Wesley Community in Saratoga Springs, NY for the past seven years, passed away on July 30, 2021.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose LaVigne, who passed away in 2011; parents Bernard and Mary Pyke Hopkins; sister, Gertrude Kannegeiser; brothers, Richard, James, Thomas and Bernard Hopkins; and daughter-in-law Kay LaVigne.

Survivors include her children and spouses: Robert LaVigne, James LaVigne and wife Mary Gavin, Diane Pinakiewicz and husband Bill, Dawn Trodden and husband Bill, her thirteen grandchildren Kelley Sturman, Lisa LaVigne, Wendy LaVigne, Tim LaVigne, Jarod LaVigne, Lindsay LeDoux, Jaimie Delaney, Ashley Smallwood, Thaddeus Pinakiewicz, Melissa Corrado, Christine Ackerman, Jessica Apel, and Kyle Trodden, as well as nineteen great-grandchildren.

She was a proud registered nurse who dedicated over 50 years of her life giving compassionate care to others, and she multiplied that talent by teaching other nurses and even creating her own curriculum for LPNs so they could pursue careers helping others.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister and aunt, adding great memories and food to all family occasions.

She loved her husband Ambrose for over 60 years, unconditionally and faithfully, and worked relentlessly with him as a team to give her four children all the things she did not have.

Her children will always remember that she worked throughout their childhood, but they were always the kids who awoke to a mother’s breakfast, had lunch sandwiches on home-baked bread and enjoyed great family dinners every night. Their home was always spotless. Their friends were always welcome.

She blessed her friends with the same caring she gave her husband, children, and patients. Wherever she lived she went out of her way to help others, always ministering to their ailments and pitching in with a kind word, a good deed or a delicious meal. People who met her loved her for her kind heart and generous friendship.

At her request there will be no services. She will be cremated and her ashes joined with her husband’s at the Gerald B. Solomon National Cemetery at a later date. Those wishing to remember Lillian may make donations to the Wesley Community, 156 Lawrence St, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Nancy McCarroll Scanlon

GANSEVOORT — Nancy McCarroll Scanlon, 73, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on August 4, 2021.

Nancy was born in Suffern, NY on July 24, 1948, to Edwin and Dorothy McCarroll and lived and raised her family with her husband Francis Xavier Scanlon in Wilton, NY. While working for Planned Parenthood as an RN, Nancy obtained her Bachelor of Science in Social Welfare at The University of Buffalo and later her Master of

Nancy then followed her calling by spending over 25 years in various positions with The St. Anne Institute, a job she was passionate about and loved. Her co-workers were her second family, and she will be missed.

Her love for family and friends, along with deep passion for helping others, were the core to who Nancy was. Being a grandmother to Adriana Grace was the highlight of her life. She loved to travel, garden, and float in her pool. Her collection of Christmas ornaments and Willow Tree figurines is unmatched. Happy Hour was always Friday Nights at the Darcys.

She is predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Dorothy McCarroll; her husband, Francis Xavier Scanlon; and her sister, Marilyn Weimar.

Nancy is survived by her two loving sons, Brenden Scanlon and Bryan Scanlon (Kathy); cherished granddaughter, Adriana Grace; her sister, Virginia Griffen (Paul); sisters-in-law, Nancy Sutherland and Kathy Beaury (Jack); her nieces and nephews, Kim, Kristin, Jessica, Erin, Catherine Rose, Geoffrey, Kenny

Jr, and C.J.; as well as her bonus grandson, Johnathan and many, many grand-nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends gathered to remember her Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway in Saratoga Springs. A funeral home service will be held on Friday August 13, 2021, at 10 a.m. with burial in Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Following services, friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Nancy’s Life to be held at Nancy’s home from 1 p.m. until the last Miller Lite is gone.

Mary Louise (Farnan) Gilgallon

STILLWATER — Mary Louise (Farnan) Gilgallon, 88, a lifelong resident of Stillwater, passed away Friday, August 6, 2021 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born July 21, 1933, in Mechanicville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas “Tim” and Bertha Farrell Farnan.

Survivors include her children, Mary Ann Gilgallon (Thomas Sharkey) of Anchorage, AK, Donna P. (James Nichol) Gilgallon, Edward T. (Meg Pitney) Gilgallon, and Louise A. (late William O. Smith Jr.) Gilgallon Smith, all of Saratoga Springs; grandchildren, Dylan and Erin, Kate Gilgallon of Saratoga Springs, and Ellen M. Sharkey of Anchorage, AK; brother, Thomas Farnan of Johnstown;

sisters, Joan Campbell of Salem and Carol Reynolds of Scotia; countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Donald R. Gilgallon and her sister, Anne F. Butler.

Mary Lou was a 1950 graduate of Schuylerville Central School and a 1953 graduate of Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as an RN for 10 years at numerous locations including Miami, FL, at the VA Hospital in Albany, Samaritan Hospital in Troy and was a Visiting Nurse for the Saratoga County Public Health prior to getting married and raising her family.

Mary Lou was a faithful and active lifetime parishioner of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Stillwater.

She took an interest in others, especially her children. She was a 4-H leader, a church school teacher and an enthusiastic fan cheering for her children and their teammates playing sports in school. She was an avid reader, homemaker, a great listener and conversationalist.

Mary Lou was the family historian due to her excellent memory and accurate recall.

Mary Lou also enjoyed country and western music, playing cards, camping, RV-ing and travelling all 50 states and many foreign countries.

She was a member of the Adirondack Good Sam’s RV Club. Mary Lou and Don enjoyed many winters in their

vacation home in Arizona.

Mary Lou and her beloved husband enjoyed socializing with their many friends and family members celebrating important occasions as well as everyday pleasures of life. Growing up and raising her family on a small farm she had a lifelong curiosity and interest in farming, the change of seasons and the beauty of wildlife.

Mary Lou will be remembered for her intelligence, her keen sense of humor, her caring nature and her passion for life.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2021 at All Saints Church on the Hudson North, 881 Hudson Ave., Stillwater, NY 12170. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

The family requests that masks be worn by everyone at the church and cemetery services and practice social distancing when possible.

Jesse R. Coleman, 37, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced Aug. 2 to 1-1/2 years in prison and 1-1/2 years post-release supervision, after pleading to attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony.

Kristopher M. Flores, 36, of Troy, pleaded Aug. 2 to offering a false instrument for filing in the first-degree, a felony, in Clifton Park. Sentencing Sept. 27.

Naquise J. Dawson, 21, of Schenectady, pleaded Aug. 2 to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second-degree, a felony, in Moreau. Sentencing Sept. 27.

Shannon L. Tracey a.k.a Shannon Green, 36, of Saratoga Springs, pleaded July 29 to attempted burglary in the third-degree, a felony, in connection with an incident in Malta. Sentencing Sept. 27.

POLICE Jonathan E. Trow, 39, of Ballston Lake, was charged Aug. 6 in Saratoga Springs with criminal possession of a weapon in the third-degree, a felony due to a prior conviction.

A 23-year-old Albany man was charged Aug. 5 in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on Caroline Street in the early morning hours of June 26. Police said the shots fired incident took place at the intersection of Caroline Street and Broadway a short time and distance from where a stabbing had occurred.

Dennis A. Combs III, 23, of Albany, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second-degree, and reckless endangerment in the firstdegree. Both charges are felonies. Combs was taken into

BLOTTER 5 custody in the city of Albany on a Saratoga County Superior Court warrant for the related charges and transported to the Saratoga Springs Police Department where he was processed and subsequently sent to Saratoga County Jail.

Sean M. Cherven, 40, of Milton, was charged Aug. 7 with sexual abuse in the first-degree -a felony, sexual abuse in the second degree - a misdemeanor, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Cherven is accused of having sexual contact with a 13-year-old victim and an 11-year-old victim, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office.

Parrish Johnson, 19, of Elloree, was charged July 26 in Saratoga Springs with assault in the third-degree.

Kathleen Carroll, 48, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 26 with misdemeanor petit larceny.

Jonathan Jurnak, 22, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July b27 with criminal obstruction of breathing, unlawful imprisonment, and assault in the third-degree. All three charges are misdemeanors.

Jonathan Lawless, 30, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 27 with misdemeanor DWI, and misdemeanor aggravated DWI.

Brandy McLaughlin, 36, of Malta, was charged July 27 in Saratoga Springs with assault in the third-degree.

Matthew Snowball, 44, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 27 with misdemeanor menacing, and felony criminal possession of a weapon.

Lorie Savage, 55, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 27 with obstruct governmental official, and criminal mischief. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Timothy Quinlan, 41, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 28 with felony burglary.

Jaquan Sams, 32, of Albany, was charged July 29 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle – a misdemeanor, and three driving/ vehicle related violations.

Scott Michalkiewicz, 45, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 29 with criminal obstruction of breathing, a misdemeanor.

Jaquan Cowan, 31, of Albany, was charged July 29 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor criminal mischief, and felony criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Marcus Jackson, 32, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 29 with criminal contempt, and aggravated family offense – both charges are felonies due to prior offenses within five years.

Joseph Murray, 46, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 29 with menacing, criminal mischief – both misdemeanors, and criminal possession of a weapon – a felony due to a previous conviction.

Betty Anderson, 40, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 30 with intent to obtain transportation without paying, a misdemeanor.

Chad Lang, 47, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 30 with misdemeanor petit larceny.

Rural Communities Opioid Response Program Awarded $1 Million Grant WASHINGTON, D.C. — Adirondack Community Action Programs, Inc. has been awarded a grant of $1 million to implement its Rural Communities Opioid Response program, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, R-Saratoga, announced Aug. 9.

The Rural Communities Opioid Response program is a multi-year program that addresses barriers to treatment for substance abuse and opioid use disorder. The funds work to enhance access to care so rural

communities can seek treatment and prevention services needed to combat the opioid epidemic.

“The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact on the North Country, and unfortunately, the crisis has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. This important funding will go a long way both to combat this terrible epidemic and expand access to care so that those suffering from addiction can receive the treatment they need,” Stefanik said, in a statement.

Saratoga PLAN Benefit Monday features The Gibson Brothers GALWAY — On the evening of Aug. 16, Saratoga PLAN is hosting a bluegrass concert to raise funds for conservation in Saratoga County. The concert is being held at the Cock ‘N Bull Restaurant in Galway and will feature treasured local duo, The Gibson Brothers.

Tickets to the event are $75 and include complimentary finger foods. There will be a cash bar.

Guests are invited to bring their own blankets and chairs for lawnstyle seating; other seating is limited. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the bluegrass begins at 6:30 p.m.

This is PLAN’s first major

event since COVID-19 protocols have been lifted. Proceeds from the event will benefit Saratoga PLAN’s ongoing protection of critical resources helping to combat climate change, including farms that provide local food, forested lands absorbing CO2 and rainwater, and open spaces providing wildlife corridors for native plants and animals. The only land trust focused on Saratoga County, PLAN is currently working on 18 land projects totaling over 2,000 acres.

County Shifting to Full Scale Health Department BALLSTON SPA — Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett, chair of the Public Health Advisory Task Force announced on Aug. 6 the Task Force is recommending the county create a Director of Environmental Health position as an important step in transitioning from a county Public Health Services office to a full-service County Department of Health.

As a result of an increase in resident population, the county must convert from a partial health service county to a full

health service district, pursuant to NY Public Health Law Article 340. This conversion requires the addition of an environmental services unit, as these services will no longer be provided by the New York State Department of Health.

Saratoga County is working directly with the New York State Department of Health during this transition process.

health programs, which are an integral part of building out the fullscale health department,” Barrett said, in a statement.

The measure will be up for vote by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors at their Aug. 17 meeting. If approved, the recruitment process will begin to fill the position. Under the general supervision of the Saratoga County Health Commissioner, the Director of Environmental Health will plan, direct, supervise and execute all environmental health programs throughout the county.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — CCE Equine is hosting a free Horse Farm tour on Sunday, August 22. The community is invited for a drive- it-yourself tour of select horse farms around the county from 12- 4 p.m. Meet some of the farm owners and horses that make the Saratoga area so unique.

The Horse Farm Tour is fun and educational for the whole family and a perfect way to spend a Sunday-Fun-Day. Horse lovers and families will meet the different breeds of horses and get a behind the scenes look at the horses that are frequently our neighbors here in Saratoga County. A variety of equine businesses and farms are offered to tour in order to promote the diversity found in the equine industry. The horse farms included on the tour are: Cross Timbers Ranch of Middle Grove, Mill Creek Farm of Stillwater and Stark Racing Stables of Saratoga.

Only 50 years ago there were more than 1,800 farms in Saratoga County. Today approximately 650 farms (one-third as many) are in operation. Saratoga County is the permanent home to approximately 4,200 horses.

Saratoga County Public Health Services Issues Advisory Recommending Masking Up BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County Public Health Services (SCPHS) issued an advisory on Aug. 7 recommending that all individuals—fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated, and

unvaccinated--wear a mask when indoors with people who are not members of their own household, outdoors in crowded settings, and when engaging in activities that involve close contact with others

who are not fully vaccinated.

SCPHS also said it recommends vaccination for those who are eligible to do so.

The announcement comes as Saratoga County is experiencing a high level of COVID-19 community transmission, fueled by the spread of the highly contagious B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant.

According to the state Department of Health, the weekly average positivity rate of Saratoga County residents who had gotten tested for COVID-19 was 4.6% through Aug. 9 – a positivity rate among the highest in the state.

Since June 6, approximately 40% of reported cases in the county have been identified in individuals ages 18-39; an additional 10% of reported cases have occurred among those ages 6-11 years. While hospitalizations during this time have not increased to levels observed during January 2021, approximately 89% of hospitalized individuals were not fully vaccinated, the department said.

To date, only 0.007% of fully vaccinated county residents have been hospitalized due to COVID disease. Similarly, of the 169 COVID-19 related

deaths reported to SCPHS, 99.4% occurred in individuals who were not fully vaccinated.

Just over 70% of all county residents and 80% of vaccineeligible county residents have received at least one dose of vaccine. “This level of vaccine coverage has prevented a surge in severe COVID-19 disease and hospitalizations in our community,” the release said. It also cited masking as providing protection from COVID-19 to the wearer; If the wearer is infected, masking helps prevent transmission to others.

Saratoga Hospital Requiring Employees Be Fully Vaccinated or Undergo Weekly Testing SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital announced on Aug. 9 it is requiring that all employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Sept. 7 or be tested for the virus weekly.

The vaccination policy requires employees to provide proof of vaccination by the Sept.

7 deadline or start weekly testing.

The policy also includes exemptions and deferrals. Those who do not comply with the policy will be placed on leave.

The policy reflects guidance from the hospital’s medical staff, board of trustees and individuals across the Saratoga Hospital organization and will be reviewed regularly and updated to reflect changing conditions, new knowledge and the latest CDC guidance.

Saratoga Hospital joins more than 90 hospitals and health systems nationwide in requiring COVID-19 vaccination for employees. New York State has announced it will require state employees to be vaccinated as of Labor Day. And nearly 60 major medical organizations—including the American Medical Association and American Nurses Association—have called for “all healthcare and long-term care employers to require their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Andrew Cuomo was first elected governor of New York in November 2010. Re-elected in 2014 and again in 2018. On or about August 24, his governorship will come to an end, Cuomo announced this week, in the wake of a report by investigators appointed by New York Attorney General Letitia James that found the governor sexually harassed multiple women.

“I think given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing.

And therefore, that’s what I’ll do,” Cuomo announced Tuesday, Aug. 10. “My resignation will be effective in 14 days.”

On that date, current Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will take office. “I agree with Governor Cuomo’s decision to step down. It is the right thing to do and in the best interest of New Yorkers,” she tweeted, shortly after Cuomo’s resignation announcement. “As someone who has served at all levels of government and is next in the line of succession, I am prepared to lead as New York State’s 57th Governor,” she said.

Hochul, who has visited all 62 counties in the state during her tenure as Lieutenant Governor, was last in Saratoga Springs on July 27, when she met with local business leaders at the official public opening of The Pines building at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. She was born and raised in

the Buffalo area, the descendant of immigrant grandparents who fled poverty in Ireland, and the daughter of a steelworker and union organizer. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and a JD from Catholic University.

Hochul will be the state’s first woman governor, and the eighth of fifty-seven governors to be appointed – the last being David Paterson in March 2008 following the resignation of Eliot Spitzer – who stepped down after reports surfaced that he had patronized a prostitution ring.

The state governorship is filled with notable names in American history and some colorful ones as well. Martin Van Buren, Grover Cleveland, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt had each become U.S. Presidents.

Andrew Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo, was first elected N.Y. governor in 1982 and served three four-year terms. Among the candidates who had once tossed their hat in the ring are Philip Schuyler and Aaron Burr, Robert Moses, and Malachy McCourt. Al “Grandpa Munster” Lewis ran for the office in 1998 and came in sixth place in a ten-person race that saw the re-election of George Pataki. The next gubernatorial election in New York will take place Nov. 8, 2022.

Responses to Cuomo’s resignation were swift from regional elected officials, who each praised the women who came forward to report Cuomo’s sexual harassment.

Additionally, Republican Senators Jim Tedisco (R -Glenville) and Daphne Jordan R-Halfmoon) called on the Assembly Judiciary

Committee Chairman Charles Lavine and members of the Committee to move forward and expedite the impeachment of Gov. Cuomo. Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake, said she was “relieved” Cuomo announced his resignation and called the governor’s responses to the Attorney General’s report “utterly tone deaf.”

U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Saratoga, called for Cuomo to be arrested and prosecuted for sexual harassment, assault, and abuse, as well as for “covering up the tragic deaths of our most vulnerable seniors in nursing homes.”

U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, said the resignation was “long overdue,” and looked forward to beginning the process of restoring New Yorkers’ trust in the dignity and accountability of the state’s executive leadership, as well as maintaining a focus on the urgent task of tending to the ongoing COVID pandemic.

City Unanimously Adopts Resolution Urging All to Mask Up

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Aug. 10, the Saratoga Springs City Council unanimously approved a resolution adopting the recommendations of the Saratoga County Public Health Services urging all citizens fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated, and unvaccinated to wear a mask when indoors with people who are not members of their household, in crowded outdoor settings, and when in

activity with those who are not fully vaccinated.

Saratoga County is currently experiencing a high level of community spread fueled by the Delta variant.

“Right now, we need to protect one another and the best way to do that is to get vaccinated and for everyone to mask up, one layer of protection is not enough,” Public Safety Commissioner Robin Dalton said, in a statement.

County Announces COVID Testing Initiative for Saratoga Schools

BALLSTON SPA – With an eye on schools reopening amid concerns about the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the county announced a new $3.9 million initiative that offers testing for local students, teachers and staff.

Next week, the Board of Supervisors is expected to approve a $3.9 million project, that will make available what

Board of Supervisors Chairman Theodore Kusnierz called “a patient-friendly, non-invasive saliva/swab test in schools.” The project is fully funded by a federal grant via the CDC, and covers both the equipment contract – at $3.5 million with Quadrant Biosciences Inc. of Syracuse - as well as “necessary staffing” the board deems as appropriate for the tests conducted in schools.

“I think this will be wellreceived by the schools,” Kusnierz said. Results of the

self-administered PCR test will be available in 24 hours, and assistance will be available for any student that needs help in performing the test.

“The Superintendent of BOCES (Anita Murphy) is a member of our Task Force and she’s playing a key role in ensuring the strategy of our school districts – even those outside of Saratoga County – are aware of what we’re doing here in Saratoga,” Kusnierz said.

“The frequency of testing will follow CDC recommendation so that will depend on the level of community transmission and whether certain individuals are engaged in extra-curricular activities or sports, but in general it will be once a week when community transmission is at any level but low,” said Saratoga County Public Health Commissioner Dr. Daniel Kuhles.

The CDC identifies four ascending levels of community transmission - Low, Moderate, Substantial, and High – by measuring the number of positive tests compared to county population over a seven-day period.

In Saratoga County - where there is a population of approximately 230,000 – the LOW category would equate to less than 23 persons per week testing positive for COVID-19. The number of persons as of Aug. 11 testing positive

in the county this past week is 295.

Asked about implementation of the tests, as well as masking, Dr. Kuhles replied, “questions about mandates are really for the elected officials and school boards to decide.”

“Regarding school reopening, the county is not taking any position or mandates as far as what schools are going to do at this point – that decision is going to be up to the individual schools,” said Clifton Park Supervisor and SHARP (Saratoga Health And Readiness Planning) Task Force member Jonathan Schopf. “We’re hoping for a target date of around August 16 when the schools will release their reopening policies.”

Earlier this month, the Saratoga Springs City School District updated its current health and safety plans, requiring all students and staff to wear an appropriate mask at all times while inside any of the district’s buildings.

“Masking is known to be an effective layer of prevention in schools and other locations,” said Dr. Kuhles. “It prevents the wearer from being exposed when used consistently and correctly and it can also act as a type of source control if the wearer of the mask is infected and prevent exposures to others.”

Kusnierz said Saratoga County is the third most

vaccinated county in the state outside of New York City. Meanwhile, Saratoga County remains in the “High Transmission” range of the virus as per CDC metrics. As per age range, the 18 to 29 years-ofage group has returned the most positive test results since Aug. 1 Kusnierz said, accounting for one-fourth of all positive cases in Saratoga County.

“The increase in numbers regarding the Delta variant with the COVID-19 disease certainly is concerning based upon what we’re seeing happen across the nation, across New York State, and we’re also concerned here in Saratoga County,” said Kusnierz, “but I just want to keep it in perspective If you look at the (relatively low) number of people being hospitalized.”

“Yes, the numbers are going up, however the best way for an individual to be protected is to get the vaccination. It’s been demonstrated scientifically: you get the vaccine, there’s a high probability you’re not going to get admitted to the hospital…I encourage all our residents to receive the vaccination,” Kusnierz said.

Dr. Kuhles agreed. “The vaccine is doing what it is designed to do which is prevent hospitalizations, severe illness, and death… vaccine remains our most effective tool in our battle against COVID.”

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Four Seasons Natural Foods has officially purchased their building on Henry Street.

Richard Frank has owned and operated Four Seasons Natural Foods for three decades. He has been leasing the 8,640 square foot market at 120 Henry Street for the past seven years from realtor Frank Parillo. The transaction was finalized for Frank to officially

purchase the building in July.

“It made sense for long term piece of mind,” said Frank. “We

will be investing in the property for the long term.”

The Four Seasons Natural Foods Café on Phila Street closed temporarily due to COVID, and then officially closed its doors in March. Frank sold the storefront to Philip and Kirsten Lambert in April. Tailgate and Party operates at that location now.

“This is an era of flexibility, so it made sense,” said Frank on selling the building to focus on the market.

GlobalFoundries Makes Leadership Gift to HVCC North Expansion Project MALTA — Hudson Valley Community College and GlobalFoundries (GF) are expanding their partnership and creating a new training and apprenticeship center at the college’s HVCC North extension center in Malta.

The center is part of the college’s $12.5 million expansions project aimed at boosting workforce training efforts in high demand areas.

The GlobalFoundries Workforce Training and Apprenticeship Center at HVCC North announced on Aug. 5 during an event at the college’s Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Renewable Technologies (TECSMART), will be created through a philanthropic gift of $500,000, which includes specialized equipment for workforce training.

The HVCC North Expansion Project includes renovations to current facilities at TEC-SMART and the creation of a new twostory, 14,500 square foot STEM Education Center, which will include brand new, state-of-theart labs for microbiology, anatomy, and physiology, chemistry and biology, and new classrooms, student support spaces, and offices.

For the summer of 2021, it is like night and day. The city of Saratoga Springs projects 2021 tax collection will surpass $14.5 million, more than $1 million more than the amount collected in 2019, pre-COVID.

Munter Enterprises, Inc. Proposes New Warehouse in Saratoga SARATOGA SPRINGS — Munter Enterprises, Inc. have submitted a proposal to construct another warehouse at the W.J. Grande Industrial Park.

Brothers John and Michael Munter, President and Vice President, are the second generation running Munter Enterprises – the general contracting firm out of Middle Grove. Munter Enterprises has constructed many large projects across the Capital Region, and up next

they plan to construct a 70,000 square foot warehouse on a portion of the 10.34 acres of property they own in the W.J. Grande Industrial Park at 20 Skyward Drive in Saratoga Springs.

Hands-On Learning: Saratoga County 4-H to Host Sheep Shearing Clinic BALLSTON SPA – Saratoga County 4-H is offering a Sheep Shearing Clinic this fall to youth ages 10 and older. The event will take place at the 4-H Training Center on Middleline Road in Ballston Spa on September 16, 2021 at 5 p.m. This clinic will exhibit the art of sheep shearing and preparing wool breeds for show. Participants will be provided a hands-on learning experience from professional shearer Siri Swanson.

Siri Swanson is a Shepherd and Shearer of Yankee Rock Farm. Swanson has an abundantce of background knowledge in the sheep industry and has been shearing for the last five years. Siri along with shearing partner, Colin Siegmund, strive to maintain animal comfort and top-quality clipping.

a Better Place “MOTHERING BOYS” ne of the things I’ve been most amazed by since becoming a mother is the softness I often feel towards others, much more easily than before having children. The hard edge I often brought to my assessments of others is noticeably absent — or at least much diminished — and I know for sure that having had the gift of knowing my children from the earliest moments of their lives, and seeing that many aspects of their personalities show themselves even at birth and continue through their lives, and that the harder aspects of a person’s personality often make the bearer suffer as much or more so than the people around him or her, has helped me to be a kinder, more compassionate person.

One example I’ve been thinking about a lot lately has to do with something that happened during my own high school running “career” of nearly twenty-five years ago. I’ve been thinking of it recently because in May one of my boys and I started running together regularly, and we’ve even run/walked the 5K (3.1 mile) Varsity Course at the State Park, which is where my high school memory happened and surely one of the reasons it resurfaced.

During Cross Country practices in high school, the task and expectation by the coach was that we would run, not walk, whatever course she had us do in practice, but one of my teammates would regularly stop and walk once we were out of sight of the coach.

This teammate didn’t fancy herself a particularly good runner, and neither was I — in fact, I was the worst runner on the team — and yet I kept a steel grip on the requirement to run and not walk, even to the point of running so slowly that a walker could beat me. So it was particularly galling to me that every time my walking teammate heard my “running” steps coming up behind her, she would start running again until she put enough space between us, and then she would slow to a walk again.

And she beat me in almost every race. I hated that I gave everything I felt I had to give and still came up short against someone who didn’t seem to give much at all, and I’ve seethed at that memory ever since.

Fast forward to this summer when my boy and I have been working hard — and it’s been hard work!

We started with a Couch to 5K program in which the first few workouts consisted of running for one minute, then walking for one minute, and repeating ten times, and are now up to being able to run two miles without stopping (most of the time anyway).

But the thing is, I now see no problem at all with stopping to walk if needed — I encourage my son to do so if he feels he needs to (with the intention of just catching his breath and then resuming running), since I can see how hard he’s working and I want to encourage him, and my goal for him is good physical health and the kind of mental strengthening that happens with doing something good but difficult, rather than being the best and fastest. With

intermittent walking, he’s been able to keep going, keep improving, slowly but surely.

Of course, I know that the goals and measures of success for a kid who’s running on his own for good health and not part of a team (and with his middleaged mother with finicky knees) are and should be quite a bit different from those of a high school Cross Country runner, or any competitive athlete of any age.

Even still, I’ve been astonished at my own change of heart toward runners who stop to walk. I’m so moved by the effort I see my boy putting in, and since my goal for him is improvement rather than perfection, I’m happy with every step forward, whether walking or running. I even think back to that teammate of mine in high school — looking at her with a mother’s eyes, I have a better sense that she probably wasn’t actually trying to “cheat the system,” but rather that running was probably a challenge for her, and the fact that she kept with it all season and didn’t quit the team was a success in itself and one worth celebrating.

I have many examples of being astonished by my softening towards others the older I get, and it’s always with a particularly maternal heart. Having had my own children, I’m better able to see others as the children of mothers who love them and can see the best in them even when no one else can, who know they have their demons and private struggles and give them grace when no one else will. There’s something quite nice about that — something that, I think, makes the world a better place (if it doesn’t make for top runners).

Preserving Assets and Income If Your Spouse Applies for Medicaid what you can keep and strategies to consider alternatives. For example, you could spend some of the excess resources on necessary home repairs because the home is an exempt asset. For example, $5,000 in funds in excess of the allowable limit can be used to pay for a needed furnace replacement, instead of being spent down on nursing home costs.

by Matt Dorsey for Saratoga TODAY People sometimes think that if their spouse enters a nursing home that the nursing home or the government will take all their assets, leaving them in dire financial straits. The truth, however, is that even if your spouse enters a nursing home and you need to apply for Medicaid coverage to pay for the cost, you can still retain significant assets and income.

In Medicaid parlance, the spouse who stays out of the nursing home is referred to as the “Community Spouse” and the spouse who enters the nursing home is referred to as the “Institutionalized Spouse”.

Below is a set of questions and answers which will help explain what assets a Community Spouse will be able to keep if their spouse goes into a nursing home.

If my spouse applies for Medicaid for nursing home care, what assets can I keep?

Medicaid rules allow the Community Spouse to retain the following assets as “exempt resources”: • $74,820.00 in monetary assets (and sometimes more), • the family home, • the tangible personal property within the family home, • irrevocable pre-paid funeral arrangements, and • one car.

What happens if I have more assets than allowed?

You will need to “spend down” those assets private paying for nursing home costs, until you reach the allowable level.

However, there may be some

Can I refuse to make my assets and income available to pay for the nursing home care of my spouse?

Yes, you can. That is known as a spousal refusal. If you file a spousal refusal, then the Medicaid authorities may seek to force you to provide the resources by litigating the matter in court. If you file a spousal refusal, the Medicaid authorities must evaluate the eligibility of your spouse without considering your assets.

Is all tangible personal property exempt as a resource?

No, if you have items of specific intrinsic value, such as a coin collection or valuable pieces of art, they would potentially be considered non-exempt.

Do I have to contribute any of my income to the care of my spouse?

The Community Spouse is also entitled to $3,259.50 per month in income in 2021, which is known as the Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance (MMMNA). If the Community Spouse does not have that amount in their own name, they are entitled to income from the Institutionalized Spouse to reach the $3,259.50 level.

For example, if both spouses solely have as income Social Security and the Community Spouse receives $1,500 in Social Security and the Institutionalized Spouse receives $2,000 in Social Security, the Community Spouse is entitled to $1,759.50 of the Institutionalized Spouse’s $2,000 in Social Security in order to reach the $3,259.50 MMMNA level. Certain deductions apply for expenses like Medicare premiums and private health insurance costs.

Are retirement accounts like IRAs considered assets?

Generally no, they are not. They are considered instead as sources of income. The income amount derived from them is based on the account owner’s age and

is somewhat larger than the required minimum distribution (RMD) amount. This is good news, however, because it means that a Community Spouse could have an IRA worth $100,000.00 and that money would not be counted towards the $74,820.00 in resources that they are allowed to have.

Given all these rules, are there planning opportunities?

If your spouse is entering a nursing home and applying for Medicaid, you do not need to be impoverished as a result. The

rules regarding income and asset exemptions are complex, but they yield many planning opportunities to maximize the preservation of assets and income for the Community Spouse.

While life insurance is an important component of nearly everyone’s financial plan, there are multiple types, which can cause quite a lot of confusion. At its core, however, insurance falls into two categories: permanent and term.

The type of insurance you have depends on your anticipated need. If you feel your need for insurance will be permanent, meaning you’ll need it whether you die today or at age 95, then permanent insurance should be considered. Most people, however, only need life insurance to cover a specific period of time, making term insurance a preferable option.

LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK: Term insurance is intended to cover a basic need: to replace the economic loss resulting from a death during a specific period of time.

It sounds clinical, but that’s all it is. For example, if I have a child today, I may want to purchase a 25-year term policy to ensure that, if I were to pass away before that child became independent, there would be sufficient assets to provide for my child. Once they’re out of the house the need no longer exists and the insurance term expires. Parents today might need a 30-year policy!

With term insurance, you’re only paying for what you need, when you need it. Because of that, the premiums are much lower, relative to many permanent forms of insurance.

Permanent life insurance is intended to cover a permanent need. The most frequent permanent needs I encounter are:

Estate planning: In order to provide for liquidity at death, or to create a tax-free estate at death, permanent life insurance strategies can be utilized.

Pension replacement: In the event one spouse elected a single-life only pension, a permanent insurance policy can be used to replace the pension in the event of the pensioner’s death.

In both of these circumstances, a permanent insurance policy is used simply because the insurance need exists for an unknown period of time. It would be unwise to use a term policy in these instances.

Many people have been sold permanent insurance policies who may not have had a permanent need, on the premise that permanent insurance can build cash value against which tax-free loans can be taken in the future. While this is technically true, in my seventeen years in private practice, I’ve very rarely encountered a person who funded their retirement using their life insurance cash value.

This is true for a variety of reasons.

In order to grow significant cash value, the policy premiums needed are significantly higher than just the cost of insurance (which is all you pay in a term policy). While many people are well-intentioned on the front-end, life happens, and very often people reduce the amount they pay into their policies, which dramatically affects the policy’s performance.

Another reason these policies often don’t live up to expectations is that life insurance agents may use unrealistic assumptions when illustrating future policy performance. If you bought a policy in the ‘80s, illustrated using 1980s interest rates, then you know exactly what I mean.

The only time I see permanent insurance work as a savings vehicle, is for a client whose cash flow is such that they have maximized contributions to every other retirement savings vehicle, and still have significant money they need to sock away. So, if you’ve exhausted your ability to contribute to your 401k, 403b, IRAs, and other retirement vehicles, then permanent insurance could be another avenue for saving.

It should be noted that some people start out with a temporary need which evolves into a need that is more permanent. Luckily, most term insurance is convertible into a form of permanent insurance for just this reason.

In the battle between term and permanent, as planners, we overwhelmingly favor term insurance.

It is by far the most cost-effective way to solve for a need, while preserving the option to convert to permanent insurance if the need changes.

One of the most asked questions I receive while in the clinic, is “What do you treat most often?”

My response, although a bit of dead-pan humor is, “humans mostly.”

Yes. I treat shoulders, hips, backs, knees, post surgeries, jaw, and just about any orthopedic condition someone may have who comes through our doors. Although my response may be a bit of dry wit, it is true. Looking beyond an impaired body part and at an individual’s function and quality of life is what I do.

We are not individual body parts, we are whole people!

Let’s look at an example of a 68 y/o woman who recently hurt their elbow after playing two days of grueling tennis matches in a row. She comes in with raging elbow pain whenever she tries to hold her racket or grab onto the steering wheel. Life is now debilitating, frustrating, and seems like she is stuck in a hole of darkness. Everything in daily life hurts. Time goes on, with hard work, treatment, avoiding activity that makes it worse, activity modifications, the elbow pain is nearly gone. Tennis can be played again, and everything is alright.

She has family in town for the races and her two young grandsons come to visit. The woman is ecstatic that she gets to play with them for the first time in several months. The family heads to the playground.

She is carrying her grandson in her loving arms while walking over the grass into the sand. Suddenly she seems quite unsure of her footing and decides to place her grandson down to walk beside him instead. Both little ones want to play in the sand. Slowly and hesitantly she kneels down in the sand placing much of her body weight through her previously painful elbow and realizes how much more difficult the movement really is. After some time playing, it is time to get up...

The above scenario is a great example of how injuries heal, but how narrow focused we can get on specific injuries. We cannot miss the big picture of fitness! Fitness helps us engage in exercises, play sports, move around the house, hold our children, carry groceries up the stairs, and so much more that makes our quality of life better. Four fitness foundations make up our daily activities: stability/balance, mobility, power, and strength.

If we engage and work on these four movement principles, we will be able to move well and thrive.

STABILITY/BALANCE. A proper starting place should be established before we try to enhance our movements. Stability is our body’s ability to control a movement at or into a specific position.

The grandmother above was unable to maintain safe stability while carrying her grandson through some uneven terrain, thus forcing her to set him down.

All movements in our body come from our brain. There is an intricate and complex highway of nerves that must be coordinated together to make clear and concise movements or to maintain our balance. If we fail to stabilize our body or joints, whether it is moving or trying to stay still while resisting forces, movement dysfunctions or injury may occur.

MOBILITY. Mobility is our ability (or our joints ability) to move through its entire available range of motion. As our habits and lives change, our bodies will adapt to new, usually smaller ranges of motion.

Yes, age does factor into it, but less than what you would think. The tennis

player had been out of tennis for a while and developed some stiffness in her knees and hips making her ability to get down to the ground much more difficult than before her injury.

Remember, mobility is different than flexibility. Mobility is concerned with how our joints move, while flexibility is associated with the muscles.

Muscles take a long time to improve their length, while mobility can be improved by focusing on several short movements throughout the day.

POWER. The importance of power grows as we age. Power is the ability for our bodies to quickly produce force and transmit energy. Our muscles lose power faster than they lose strength with each decade of life. When the lady above felt unbalanced, power would have been important to quickly help her regain balance if she had lost it. Getting off the ground would require power and force to safely and independently rise up (especially if she was carrying something with weight.) She constantly uses power during all her tennis serves and slams! Having muscular power is linked to greater participation in sports and improving our independence with daily activities.

STRENGTH. Save the best for last! Stable and mobile bodies are great, but strong ones are better!

Muscle strength is our ability to produce force. The scenarios above have plenty of examples of where strength plays a key role: holding the grandchild, lowering herself to the ground, stabilizing her body on her arm as she knelt, and the ability to get back onto her feet after playing with her grandkids.

Strength builds resilience, tissues in our bodies that are less injured and less susceptible to pain. Building strength with exercise fights many chronic conditions and keeps our muscles from losing mass with aging (sarcopenia).

he meat vendors bring cuts of beef, goat, lamb, pork, and veal all year. They humanely raise animals and are not CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations). Growth promoting hormones and routine antibiotics are never used, and no animal by-products are ever fed.

Josh Carnes started Ramble Creek Farm in 2018.

The farm raises heritage-breed pigs to produce their “forest-raised pork,” which lives in their woods protected by an electric-powered net. The farm also produces beef.

Nathan and Meghan Mattison started Grazin’ Acres Farm in 2012 after meeting at the Washington County Fair, where they continue showing their cattle. They offer beef cuts and will provide custom cuts that customers order. They also pasture-raise their heritage breed pigs. In the future, they’ll also offer cuts of lamb.

Another beef and pork producer, Longlesson Farm, has been a vendor for many years. The farm, started

by Christophe Robert’s wife Shannon’s parents, now has 450 acres that supply pasture and hay for their herd of Black Angus. They’ve learned that grass is good for cows, and cows are good for grass! And they’ll have new cuts of pork in the fall.

Hebron Valley Veal is also a new vendor. Ariel Garland and Matt Campbell raise calves from their dairy cows. Their calves are never tethered and receive milk from their registered Holsteins. When

six months old, the calves are processed for rose veal cuts, which are lean and tender.

The Market’s goat meat producer, Squash Villa Farm, run by Himanee and Jim Gupta-Carlson, recently bought historic Wright farm in Easton, where French Alpine descendant goats enjoy grazing. Squash Villa is the only goat farm at Wednesday and Saturday Markets.

Mary and Bob Pratt have raised lamb since 1987 at Elihu Farm, named for Revolutionary Patriot Elihu Gifford. Their sheep are purebred Romneys (longwool) and crossbreds (medium wool). Their cuts of lamb are very healthy since most of the fat surrounds the muscles and is easily trimmed.

Mariaville Mushroom Men is from Schenectady County. Bobby Chandler said that in addition to mushrooms, they raise pork and currently offer seasoned bacon, pork chops, and spare ribs.

INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 1 pound boneless sirloin lamb* (or whole boneless sirloin roast*, or a boneless half shoulder*) • ½ cup soy sauce • ¼ cup water • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne (or to taste)

• 4 Tablespoons smooth peanut butter* • 1 Tablespoon garlic*, minced • 2 teaspoons ginger, grated or minced • 1 Tablespoon lime or lemon juice • 20 bamboo skewers

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Combine soy sauce, water, cayenne, peanut butter, garlic, ginger, and lemon or lime juice in a bowl.

2. Cut lamb into thin strips, and marinate for 2-3 hours. (It’s easier to cut thin strips of lamb that are frozen and haven’t completely thawed.)

3. Soak bamboo skewers in water for at least 20 minutes. Thread the lamb strips on the skewers. Put a strip of foil along the edge of the grill to protect the ends of the skewers. Grill 1-2 minutes on each side.

VARIATION: Marinate a boneless shoulder roast overnight, and grill to rare or medium-rare. Slice thinly.

“Love is All Around” Hello my Foodie Friends !

August can be a very warm month and it becomes a quest to stay cool.

We tend to eat lighter and refreshing foods during this time of year.

by John Reardon One of my favorite summer combos is strawberries and cream. Our children love waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. When they for Saratoga TODAY were younger they probably could have eaten it every single day and not get sick of it. This combo is also great on or in cake such as a gorgeous Swiss roll. This is a perfectly refreshing summer dessert that is loved by all! Cake rolls look really fancy as well as complicated but they are actually quite easy to make. One essential item you need to make a cake roll is a jelly roll pan. A jelly roll pan (typically 10½ by 15½ inches) is simply a smaller version of a rimmed baking sheet (about 12 by 18 inches). When it comes to equipping your kitchen, baking sheets are more versatile. You can use one to roast a large batch of vegetables, bake a dozen or more cookies, or even make a large sheet cake. A jelly-roll pan has 1-inch-high sides and is perfect for making cake rolls; it can stand in for a cookie sheet in a pinch.

Strawberries and Cream Swiss Roll is a refreshing summer cake that is sure to impress and satisfy your guests.

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• 1 1/4 cup Cool Whip thawed

• 4 eggs room temperature

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 1/2 cup powdered sugar

• ¾ cup granulated sugar

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• ½ teaspoon vanilla

• 2 tablespoons oil

• ½ teaspoons salt

• 2 tablespoons buttermilk

FOR THE FILLING:

• 1 teaspoon cider vinegar

• 6 ounces cream cheese softened

• 1 cup fresh strawberries sliced or use ½ cup strawberry jam

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CAKE: • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (set to 325 if using a very dark pan).

• Grease a 15x10x1 inch pan or a Jelly Roll pan with cooking spray and then cover with parchment paper and then grease the parchment payer.

• Lay a tea towel on a flat work surface and sprinkle well with powdered sugar and set aside.

• In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

• In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs on high for 3 minutes until pale in color. Continue beating as you slowly add in the sugar. Add the oil, buttermilk, vinegar, and vanilla. Beat for 1 more minute. Add in the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Pour batter into pan and tilt to even out the batter.

• Bake for 12-15 minutes or until it springs back when touched.

• When done, immediately invert the cake onto the towel. Remove the parchment paper and then roll the cake in the towel starting at the short end. Set on a wire rack and allow it to cool completely.

FOR THE FILLING: • Beat cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Mix in cool whip until creamy.

Refrigerate until cake has cooled completely and ready to fill.

• Unroll the cake and layer the sliced strawberries (or jam) all over the cake ½-inch from the edges.

Apply the filling evenly over the strawberries. Roll the cake back up and place seam side down on a platter. (Some of the filling will gush out while rolling. Just discard whatever comes out.) Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least an hour before serving. Dust with powdered sugar, garnish with fresh strawberries, slice, and serve.

John Oates Talks Porsche Upbeat On The Roof Presents: Heavenly Echoes at Auto Museum Saturday

Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce SARATOGA SPRINGS — The final Temple Sinai program for the Saratoga Jewish Cultural Festival presents a Zoom discussion and celebration of Black culture with Homecoming: A Film

by Beyonce at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15.

The documentary film, a highly celebrated Netflix documentary and 2019 Emmy Award nominee, is presented with a grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York.

The documentary is an indepth look at Beyonce’s 2018 Coachella show, where she was the first African American woman to headline the festival since its founding in 1999.

Beyonce chronicles her experiences, from breastfeeding newborn twins, dance rehearsals, her radical diet regimen and grueling training schedule after topping the scales at 218 pounds following the birth of her twins.

SPAC Launches School Of The Arts

SCOTT COOK BENEFIT CONCERT

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Canadian road poet Scott Cook will perform at Caffe Lena on Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The concert will benefit Youth² - Youth Helping Youth. There will also be a live interview with Scott Cook during intermission. Youth² will host a bake sale to bring refreshments to the show. Ticket sales are on the Caffe Lena website (www.caffelena.org).

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new multidisciplinary school featuring instruction in dance, music, theater and other art forms will open in September at the National Museum of Dance/Lewis A. Swyer Studios, on South Broadway.

Elizabeth Sobol, president and CEO of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, on Aug. 12 announced the launch of the project. The school is scheduled to open in September.

“The National Museum of Dance and its School of the Arts has an exceptional history of philanthropy and artistic vision thanks to individuals like Lewis A. Swyer, Marylou Whitney and Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney.

In more recent years, that spirit, vision and generosity has been carried on by Michele and Ron Riggi,” Sobol said, adding that the launch of the school was made possible with support from Stewart’s Shops and the Dake Family. Additional funding from the Charles R. Wood Foundation will go toward tuition assistance, supplies, instruments and transportation.

The school will operate out of the Lewis A. Swyer Studios, a state-of-the-art facility located behind the National Museum of Dance and will focus on creating a joyful learning environment to include introductory and exploratory arts instruction for all age groups, physiques and abilities, designed to complement offerings by other community arts organizations and schools.

“The opportunity to open a school dedicated to year-round arts education is a thrilling addition to our rapidly expanding education programs. With this new venture, we look forward to providing something truly unique to the Capital Region – a creative space where children can access and explore multiple art forms,” said Dennis Moench, SPAC’s Senior Director of Education and the School Director.

The school will also further SPAC’s mission to facilitate inclusion, equity and access in arts education, and complement the organization’s extensive education program, which currently

serves 49,000 students throughout the Capital Region annually and partners with more than 120 schools and non-profit organizations across the region.

Following the Museum’s closure as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, SPAC has collaborated with New York State Parks and the administration of the National Museum of Dance to reopen it to the public. The Lewis A. Swyer Studios are part of the National Museum of Dance campus.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Performing Arts Center announces that its WAMC@SPAC series will continue with “Horse Crazy with Sarah Maslin Nir” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Nancy DiCresce Room at The Pines@SPAC facility. WAMC Northeast Public Radio’s Joe Donahue will lead the conversation with heralded New York Times reporter, Pulitzer Prize finalist and avid equestrian Sarah Maslin Nir, exploring Nir’s new book Horse Crazy.

Sarah Maslin Nir is a staff reporter for The New York Times, and was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for “Unvarnished,” her more than yearlong investigation into New York City’s nail

salon industry that documented the exploitative labor practices and health issues manicurists face.

All attendees are required to show proof of having completed their COVID-19 vaccination no sooner than 14 days prior to the event. Verification will be required upon entry at the Charlie Gate adjacent to the Hall of Springs entrance. WAMC@SPAC: “Horse Crazy with Sarah Maslin Nir” is free to attend, however seating is limited. BALLSTON SPA — Back after a one-year hiatus, the popular Saratoga Balloon and BBQ Festival will occupy the Saratoga County Fairgrounds Aug. 27- 29 for three days of family fun. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Festival organizers moved from the traditional Father’s Day weekend to the new dates in late August, when the event was more likely to happen without restrictions.

Friday’s events include the DareDevil Trained Dog Show, balloon launches, the Brent McCoy Comedy Juggling Act, and the Balloon Glow at dusk.

Saturday is the longest day with more dog shows, another day with Brent McCoy, tethered balloon rides, helicopter rides, and the evening balloon launch.

On Sunday, there will be a car show with 100 cars, and the New York Steak Cook-Off with dozens of teams competing for the prizes and fame and bragging rights.

The Festival includes the Kids Zone - with bounce houses, pony rides, a petting farm, face painting, a designated magician, Shawn, a balloon twister, and games - live music daily and a wide choice of food.

The Saratoga County Fairgrounds are located at 162 Prospect St. in Ballston Spa. Festival hours are Friday 3 p.m. to dusk after the Balloon Glow; Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. It is a rain or shine event. Adult admission is $12; children under 16 $5 at the gate.

There is a special price on Sunday: adults are $8 and children $5. For the adventurous, you can book a balloon ride on the Festival website www.balloonandbbq.com.

Of the 8 stakes races, 6 of them are for female runners including both the Grade I Alabama and the Grade II Lake Placid. The Alabama has acted as the prelude to The Travers for most of its runnings and has become increasingly popular with fans in recent years. With High Schools and Colleges starting classes at increasingly earlier dates many families see the Alabama as the last weekend available to dedicate to racing and its appeal is approaching that of The Travers the traditional highlight of the meet run a week later.

The Alabama’s defining characteristic is its distance – an exhausting mile and one-quarter. To fully understand the Alabama you must appreciate the difficulty three year old fillies have going a mile and one-quarter on the dirt. The extra furlong of the Alabama is beyond the scope of many of the speedy fillies that have heretofore succeeded and only champions manage to handle the added distance.

This is likely the only time in their careers most will be asked to navigate the distance and as such It makes for memorable performances.

The headliner on Saturday is The Alabama named in honor of William Cottrell who bred or owned several early Kentucky Derby winners. Legend has it that when it was suggested in 1872 that the new Saratoga race be named in his honor, he demurred requesting that it be named instead for his home state – Alabama - which was struggling during the post-war reconstruction.

(There once was a time when plastering your name all over everything was considered uncouth.)

This Alabama figures to be a rematch between Malathaat (which means “senses” in Arabic), and Maracuja (which means “passion fruit” in Portuguese). The previously undefeated Kentucky Oaks winner Malathaat was narrowly beaten earlier in the meet in the Coaching Club American Oaks

by Maracuja. Most observers, however, thought that Malathaat was the better performer that day despite her narrow defeat and she is likely to be favored again. A win in the Alabama would solidify Malathaat’s position as the leader of the three-year-old filly division. Both fillies are suitably bred for the longer distance of the Alabama and while the $600,000 purse is meaningful, the real value lies in the prestige gained as a broodmare who won the Alabama.

Saturday’s undercard features two grass stakes for females – the $200,000 Grade II Like Placid for three-year-olds at a mile and one-sixteenth and the $120,000 Smart N Fancy for older runners at the sprint distance of five and one-half furlongs.

The other race of note this week will be run on Thursday when a Grade I steeplechase race will be conducted with a new name. Formerly The New York Turf Writers’ Cup, since its inception in 1938, this race has been renamed to honor recently retired trainer Jonathan Sheppard. While his body of work during his 56-year career is awe inspiring his accomplishments at Saratoga are downright legendary. In addition to being the meet’s leading trainer in consecutive seasons in 1984 and 1985, he won this race a staggering fifteen times.

But his record that seems destined to last forever is having won at least one race at Saratoga for 47 consecutive years (1969-2015)! Yes – 47 years!

three-eighths. Sheppard’s former assistant, trainer Keri Brion has four runners nominated for the race including Baltimore Bucko, the winner of the A. P. Smithwick earlier in the meet. With the cancellation of the next steeplechase race already announced Ms. Brion will run all four nominees including The Mean Queen who was on the way to victory last week before unseating the rider with less than a furlong to go.

“Blue” at the Track While Leon Blusiewicz is no longer training horses, he is still a fixture at the racetrack as he reflects on an interesting career that includes Saratoga.

If someone yells “blue” across the track, that could mean one of two things:

While the 90-year-old Blusiewicz no longer trains horses, he still comes to Saratoga from his Baltimore home.

1. The box color that represents the horse or jockey silks.

Even though he can be overlooked with his simple appearance of a baseball hat, sweatshirt, pants, and sneakers, Blusiewicz is still vocal with his thoughts on breeding and working with horses. To some extent, Blusiewicz could be considered a scholar based on the amount of breeding books that he has studied over the years.

2. Leon Blusiewicz More than likely, it is the latter as Blusiewicz has been a long-time fixture at Saratoga and the Maryland circuit as an owner, trainer, breeder, buyer, seller, and gambler.

Also, a lot of his life can be transformed into a book with chapters that include walking horses at Atlantic City, NJ and packing beer cases for a popular night club in Wildwood, NJ, his delicious crab cakes that once finished second in a recipe contest, and other interesting experiences.

Despite solid workouts, Madam Lagonza never got a chance to race. However, she did become successful in both producing winners like graded stakes turf winner Woodlander and future broodmares like the unraced dam Miner’s Secret, who had the 2017 Amsterdam Stakes winner Coal Front.

“I love that cross with Kingmambo over Seattle Slew,” he said. “If you look at Madam Lagonza, the seventh dam goes back to Deputy Minister. I have bred so many good horses, it’s unreal.”

“Do I have enough confidence in myself? I know I am being egotistical, but my results have proved it,” he said. “Before going to the Maryland sales, I would spend at least eight hours a day on research on the mares and these families.”

Blusiewicz hasn’t trained a horse since the end of the 2017 Saratoga meet with Spartiatis, who had won the Tom Fool Handicap earlier that year. Yet he continues to be a breeding and training consultant.

The last horse he helped developed was Special Lady.

Blusiewicz does have the resume to support it. He bought Snow Plow for $35,000 before winning the Grade 1 Demoiselle Stakes and Selima Stakes. He also bought Mighty Magee for $22,000 and won four stakes races with him. Furthermore, he trained Willa on the Move to win a Grade 1 race and he has also helped in the breeding process with Grade 1 winners that also include Will’s Way.

Blusiewicz thought that Special Lady could be – special – as she is a half-sister to Coal Front. Even though she had capability based on her breeding, Special Lady had the challenge of running on the right leg as her lead.

Though there is one mare that has been part of Blusiewicz’s breeding career: Madam Lagonza by the late popular sire Kingmambo. After losing an auction bid on Lemon Drop Kid in 1997, Blusiewicz came back the next day to purchase Madam Lagonza for $22,000.

“We had her in a sale, but she was sent back,” he said. “She had to be sent over to Europe where she could stay on her right lead because the track is all straightaway, especially at seven-eighths of a mile. I then went over there for the last 60 days to finish up with her.”

With that in mind, he sent Special Lady to Europe for owner Anita Nicol and trainer John Butler. As part of the transition, Blusiewicz also worked with the mare for about two months.

“When I took him to New Bolton, I learned that he was born with no cartilage [in his ankle],” he said. “That’s what stopped him.”

For Special Lady’s debut, Blusiewicz suggested an aggressive approach by running her against males in a seven-furlong allowance race at Newcastle in February 2019. After coming away with a 2½-length victory at 50-1, Nicol received offers on Special Lady while Blusiewicz thought the mare was good enough for the next step: the prestigious Coronation Cup at Epsom.

years to get a horse like him. He had no weaknesses, even when he got bothered in the Travers.”

“The owner was offered a lot of money after that race, but said ‘no,’” he said. “We were going to send her to the Coronation and she was going to galloped in the Coronation.”

“[Ramon] Dominguez worked him out of the gate one day at Aqueduct, he worked 58 and change,” Blusiewicz said. “However, he said something was bugging him in his right [side]. I told him there was nothing wrong with his right. It could have been his left ankle. We could never figure it out.”

However, two things that stopped that plan: the COVID-19 pandemic that shutdown racing for three months followed by a career-ending injury.

Today, the unbeaten Special Lady is now in foal to Mendelssohn, winner of the UAE Derby on dirt and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Even after Blusiewicz has won 184 races as a trainer and numerous races as a breeder, he still believes his onceof-a-lifetime horse never had a chance to show his full potential: Admiral Alex, who is also out of Madam Lagonza.

As a 2-year-old in 2009, Admiral Alex made an impression with his workouts at Saratoga. However, just like with many young horses, he became sick and needed time to recover.

About six months later, Blusiewicz brought Admiral Alex back to training, and once again, the horse continued to train well for a Saratoga maiden race going 1 1/8 miles on the dirt with the hopes that if the horse won, the next race was the Travers.

Admiral Alex inched away in his winning debut. However, he could not repeat that performance in the Travers after a horrendous start.

“I knew what the horse could do,” Blusiewicz said. “I waited 50

After the Travers, Blusiewicz regrouped by preparing the horse for the Arts and Letters Stakes at Belmont Park. As Admiral Alex continued to train well, Blusiewicz noticed that something didn’t seem perfect with the horse, but he couldn’t figure it out.

Admiral Alex easily cruised in the Arts and Letters with a 4 ¾-length victory while covering the 1 1/8 miles 1:47.67 – about two seconds off Secretariat’s record. That’s when Blusiewicz thought about an ambitious campaign for the following year that included the Grade 1 Carter Handicap and Metropolitan Mile Handicap. While the horse was

A Conversation with Horse Racing Author and Historian Edward L. Bowen I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and being able to watch Wednesday and Saturday stakes from Hialeah on television was one of three elements that created a great interest in horse racing.

The two other elements were my family having riding horses and an aunt sending my brother and me the Black Stallion books for Christmas. Walter Farley made some of those books virtual primers on horse racing.

for Saratoga TODAY Ed Bowen is the author of 22 books pertaining to many aspects of Thoroughbred horse racing.

His resume includes nearly a quarter century as managing editor and then editor-in-chief of The Blood-Horse, a publication that covers the world of Thoroughbred racing and breeding. He also took his talents north of the border, where he served as editor of The Canadian Horse. Ed is also a past President of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, an organization dedicated to the well being of horses. He is the recipient of numerous awards including an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Magazine Writing.

I became acquainted with Ed through a mutual friend, long time horse racing celebrity and the creator of Simulcast, Tommy Roberts. I recently asked Ed if he would agree to an interview with a question and answer format. To my delight, he accepted. I had so many questions that I wanted to ask. Unfortunately space is never a writer’s ally. That being said, I narrowed it down to a select few.

So, without further delay let’s gain an appreciation of Ed’s own words and excuse the pun, there will be no editing of the editor.

You have had an extraordinary career as both an author and editor.

Would you tell us how you became interested in horse racing and how you got started in the business?

The Black Stallion’s Filly was particularly educational in its descriptions of the Kentucky Derby and the prep races leading up to it.

When I was 15, I talked my parents into visiting Lexington instead of our usual short vacation trips to North Carolina or Virginia. This is how I discovered The Blood-Horse. Later, in college, I spent one summer working on the broodmare crew at Ocala Stud and another summer as a hot walker and then groom at Monmouth Park. The following year, 1963, The Blood-Horse had major changes in staff. I applied and was accepted, so I transferred from journalism school at the University of Florida to the University of Kentucky. Believe me, I was, and have always remained, thankful and aware of my incredible fortune that so many things fell into place in that pattern and that so many people who didn’t know me took a chance on me.

You rose up the ladder when Charles Hatton and Joe Hirsch were the premier writers on the American Turf scene. Did you learn anything from their styles of writing?

I paid attention to them and other racing writers, but Kent Hollingsworth, the new editor of The Blood- Horse, was my primary influence. I regarded myself as his student for nearly 25 years.

He pushed us to expand to familiarity with a variety of writers and subjects, and my job naturally acquainted me with older racing writers such as Joe Estes,

Joe Palmer, John Harvey, and Walter Vosburgh. The managing editor at The Blood-Horse my first five years was a veteran sportswriter, Larry Shropshire.

He implanted the thought that a grammatical mistake was on a par with breaking one of the Ten Commandments--- depending on which one, of course.

You have written numerous books on the “The Sport of Kings.”

Looking back which are your favorites and why?

A couple of them involved specific sentiments that guaranteed they would be among my favorites. Back in my days of developing interest, the three year old campaign of Nashua when I was 12 really had sealed the deal for my love of the sport. To be able to write a book about him nearly 50 years later made the cliché “labor of love” a statement of fact. Also, my most recent book was on the history of Claiborne Farm. I still have a photo of my brother and me looking over a Claiborne paddock fence at Bold Ruler in 1959. Then, to have worked for Dell Hancock, chairman of Grayson- Jockey Club Research Foundation, for so many years later made that book on her family’s historic farm another special project in a personal sense.

Also, I found myself enjoying a book on trainers, Masters of the Turf, more than I had expected.

I was worried that chapters would involve repetitions of similar careers. However, when you delve into those careers, each was an extraordinary story within the catalogue of the charms that Thoroughbreds can bring to people’s lives. Of course, the fact that many of my books were published by The BloodHorse has added to my appreciation of the opportunities.

Every poll that rates the greatest American thoroughbreds of all time have Man O’ War, Secretariat and Citation leading the list. Does any racehorse that you have witnessed compare with them?

I have no quarrel with those three

having pride of place, but I wish that Kelso would be recognized more widely as joining them to create a “big four.” It is instructive of the many ways greatness in a Thoroughbred is summoned and expressed that each of those horses did things the others didn’t. Yet, I have yet to see any horse have what I regard as a perfect career---perfect in a sense of achieving all the revered benchmarks and also never having campaigns seriously altered because of any form of setback or late physical development.

Having attended Churchill Downs for more than 50 Kentucky Derbies, are there any that stand out to you over the rest?

It would be tempting for anyone to look at his/her first Kentucky Derby as a standout. When that one happened to be won by Northern Dancer it makes for an even more compelling case. Given Northern Dancer’s half-centuryplus as a major pedigree influence, I can quip that “One of these days I’m going to finish that story.”

One also quickly learns to revere Derbies that reward certain individuals, so seeing owner-breeder

Paul Mellon and trainer Mack Miller win with Sea Hero in 1993 ranks very highly. Also, as someone enthralled with racing history, it was a unique moment when I realized I was watching a filly win the Derby. When Genuine Risk won it in 1980 she re-wrote one of the milestones I had learned early, i. e., that Regret (1915) was the only filly ever to win the Derby. You seldom have the luxury of being able to put any moment into context so thoroughly with such immediacy.

And not to ignore pure ego, my wife and I both have professional ties to the Bell Family of the old Jonabell Farm. We rented a house on the farm for some years. Holy Bull was among the stallions there when our son was very young, and whenever he saw a gray horse, he would say “Holy Bull.”

When the Holy Bull colt Giacamo won the 2005 Derby at 50-1, my delight was enhanced not only by my having bet on him but from having predicted the victory on a radio program the week before!

You won an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Magazine Writing in 1972. Can you tell us about it?

Fortunately, there are no serious aspects of my life that have to be described as being lonely for a half a century. But that poor Eclipse Award in my living room is just about to reach that milestone! I try to conjure the phrase “splendid isolation” rather than “still all alone.” Seriously, the award came along in only the second year of the Eclipse Award program, 1972.

The fact that it applied to an article that I wrote for The BloodHorse, that the subject was the Kentucky Derby, and I did the research in the Keeneland Library meant that it embraced many elements that already had come to mean so much to me.

You are an expert on the history of the breeding of Thoroughbred racehorses. Is there one stallion that stands out to you as the sport’s greatest sire?

In terms of lasting influence still with us I would have to say, Phalaris because his legacy entails all the riches in the male-line descent from both Nearco and Native Dancer. That gives you Nasrullah, Bold Ruler, Northern Dancer, Galileo, Royal Charger, as well Raise a Native, Mr. Prospector, etc. To focus on a more recent stallion and his influence in just a few generations I lean towards Northern Dancer.

He seems such a distant figure in some ways, and yet was close up (grandsire) in the pedigree of the contemporary Galileo. Like I said, that 1964 Kentucky Derby story is still being written.

You have spent a lot of time at both Keeneland and Saratoga.

They both have a shrine like appeal to horse racing fans. Can

you give us your thoughts on what makes them special?

This leads me to an aside. I remember once reading an interview featuring the late Louis Lee Haggin II, whose career and family were wrapped up in Keeneland in a most personal way. He told the questioner that he could not quite “put my finger on what makes Keeneland so special” or words to that effect. I thought, “Well, if he can’t do it after living and breathing Keeneland all his career, the pressure is surely off the rest of us!” The best I can do is pay tributes to Keeneland’s combinations: Social and business prominence within a relatively small population, and a pastoral setting perfect to showcase the beautiful and sporting brushstrokes on the canvas of the Turf.

As for Saratoga, similar physical beauty is part of its hallmark, as are the annual meeting’s long history and prevalent quality of the racing.

These are augmented by the ability within the human spirit to find elegance and comfort in creations whose history predates ourselves.

Every year I go to Saratoga, my first glimpse of the roofline of the old stands clicks me into a unique and proper mood.

Having gained a reputation as America’s foremost author of horse racing books, along with many years as editor-and-chief of The Blood-Horse is there any advice that you have for today’s generation on what it takes to make the grade as a Turf Writer?

Well, with the proviso that “foremost” is a nice comment not to be “tested” by vote, I think planning for a career as a Turf Writer is fraught with uncertainties. Of course, life always has uncertainties, but in some roles and eras they are more recognizable than others. I have been very impressed

43 with the established trade publications from the print and/or fax eras which have taken with full heart the new realities of communication. The Blood-Horse going from weekly to monthly in print while providing amazingly extensive daily electronic communications are just one example.

The Thoroughbred Daily News is another, while the Paulick Report I regard as having been a remarkable creation and perhaps a guide to the future.

As a past President of the Grayson- Jockey Club Research Foundation, would you explain what it’s priorities are?

Having said that, however, I believe some of the traditional requirements for racing journalism are not only still in play but perhaps even more important than ever.

These would include knowledge of racing history, which enables context for today’s events and undertones; the ability to write with great speed; and correct grammar.

I am so impressed by the Foundation and the overall equine research community.

During my years with The BloodHorse I was aware of the achievements of researchers funded by Grayson. Then working in an organizational and fund raising capacity for the Foundation for nearly 25 years constantly added to my appreciation. It was always gratifying to be involved in something that great sportsmen and sportswomen with true devotion to horses felt was worth supporting with donations small and large ­— and sometimes huge.

In today’s world, no editor is going to be happy with a submission that he/she wants to distribute immediately only to find that time has to be spent correcting “would have went” to “would have gone,” or shortening a 100- word sentence into two or three sentences.

I don’t think anyone can be confident in predicting how many Turf writing jobs that can support someone are going to be around.

That leads me to guess ­—and I do mean guess ­— that being effective and comfortable in some form of “on camera” performance is going to be important for someone who in an earlier time might have thought the written word would be a stand alone platform for a career.

I think the good news is that knowledge and respect for the subject and the discipline to be objective will be paramount to reporting, while informed perspective will be essential when commentary and opinion are appropriate.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation was founded by individuals in the Thoroughbred sector and its leadership today still involves many key individuals from that sector. However, its goal from the beginning has been to support veterinary research helpful to all equine species. That is still the case.

Two great veterinarians, Dr. Larry Bramlage and the late Dr. Gary Lavin, shaped the process of having dozens of projects evaluated by an amazing collection of 32 experts with a wide range of backgrounds.

There were racetrack vets, horse farm vets, and researchers in all the branches of equine health and

soundness. I helped organize annual three-day meetings and I was so pleased to hear such comments as one crossover expert from human medicine said to me: “I have never seen practitioners and researchers (in medicine) work together so well.”

Grayson- funded research consistently moves knowledge forward in a way that helps innumerable horses, and sometimes that can be regarded as a breakthrough for a veterinarian.

I still take pride every time the stallion Paynter makes news; one of the veterinarians who helped save him from laminitis documented on tape that her confidence in the treatment she gave Paynter was gained from a presentation on results of a project funded by Grayson!

In closing, I would like to thank Ed for taking the time to share some of his expertise with us. It has been a distinct privilege to conduct this interview. It is not a stretch to say that he is a National treasure as both an author and emissary of this grand pastime, known throughout the racing world as the “Sport of Kings.”

There are so many more questions that I have for Ed, they could fill a chapter in one of his books.

Hopefully he will agree to another session sometime in the future. I welcome it.

This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices.

This Week: No sooner than, No sooner when No sooner than is correct. In this phrase, the word sooner is a comparative adverb and should be followed by than (not when). We had no sooner left the game than a batter hit a home run.

LAS VEGAS, NV — The finals of the UNAA (Ultimate Ninja Athletic Association) World Series Championship took place in Las Vegas, NV on July 29-31. Over the course of three days, local ninja athlete Annika Kilinski systematically worked her way through a series of challenging obstacles to place third and bring home the bronze.

“Competing in a Las Vegas arena was amazing,” said Kilinski.

“The course was tough and the competitors were tougher, but my training paid off. I used the technique and skills I learned to get through the course with almost a clean finish. I wanted to represent SNL and my teammates well!”

Kirchner added, “Annika is a dedicated athlete. She is training at the Saratoga Ninja Lab multiple days a week, all year long.”

Challenger Soccer Following the tremendous success of Saratoga Little League’s Challenger Baseball Program and the Saratoga Springs City School District’s Unified Athletic programs, Saratoga Rec is excited to announce that it will be introducing an adaptive Soccer Program that gives players with specialized needs a place to join in and play the game of soccer in our community.

This program, for ages 4 to 22, is structured to educate participants about the game of soccer, develop the physical skills needed to play the game, and compete against their peers in a weekly game.

Challenger Soccer will be held on Saturdays from Sept. 11 to Oct. 30 from 10:45-11:45 a.m. at the Saratoga Casino & Hotel (34 Jefferson Street, Saratoga Springs). Players will need to bring water and wear sneakers/cleats – no jewelry or watches.

Fees are $45 for city residents and $65 for non-city residents, and a t-shirt is included in the fee.

Volunteer coaches are needed.

The soccer program takes a participant from their first steps on the field through to game play in a recreational environment. There are also leagues for adults who want to continue playing the game.

All Kickers and Youth League Programs will run from Sept. 11 to Oct. 30 at the Saratoga Casino & Hotel (34 Jefferson Street, Saratoga Springs). Players will need to bring a water and wear sneakers/cleats and shin guards – no jewelry or watches. A t-shirt is included in the fee.

The Kickers play one time per week, all other divisions play once during the week and once on the weekend.

Little Kickers: Little Kickers is a Parent/Child introductory program for ages 3 to 5 that teaches basic soccer fundamentals through games and activities. Little Kickers will be held on Saturdays from 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Big Kickers: Big Kickers has teams and coaches.

Teams will practice skills for the first half of the session and play games the other half. Big Kickers is for kindergartners and will be held on Saturdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Fees before Aug. 23 are $45 for city residents and $65 for non-City residents. Fees after Aug. 23 are $70 for city residents and $90 for non-city residents.

League (Co-Ed): Leagues are separated into grade appropriate divisions, from grades 1 to 12, to expose players to skills based on level of play. Divisions are Co-Ed. Divisions and schedules may change depending on registrations.

Games will be two, 25 min. halves. Player may register individually, or request to be on the same team. One head coach is needed per team. Four teams max with up to 12 players per team.

Adult Rec. League is for players for 18+. It will be held from Sept. 8 to Oct. 28 on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Fees before Aug. 23 are $45 for city residents and $65 for noncity residents. Fees after Aug. 23 are $70 for city residents and $90 for noncity residents.

Register Now for Saratoga NFL Flag Football League SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga NFL Flag Football is a co-ed youth flag football league open to all kids residing in Saratoga County and going into PreK-10th grade in the fall. The league has 6 divisions for grades Pre-K-K, 1st2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, 7th-8th, and 9th-10th. This is the first year they are offering a team for Pre-K and Kindergarteners.

Registration for the 2021 season closes on Aug. 18. The cost is $110 for children going into PreK2nd grade in the fall and $130 for children going into 3rd-10th grade

in the fall. Included in the cost is an NFL Flag team jersey and shorts.

Players will need a mouthguard (mandatory), gloves, and cleats.

Practices are set to begin on Aug. 25. On Tuesdays and Thursdays practice will be held at Northside Fields, and on Wednesdays at the PBA Fields.

Players will practice one to two times a week, and games will be played on Saturdays starting at 9 a.m. at the PBA Fields. The starting date for games is Sept. 11, with a 10-game season and the Super Bowl Weekend tentatively

occurring in early November.

Game days also feature a DJ and a food truck.

“The League provides a fun atmosphere for the boys and girls who want to join,” said Dan Warren, one of the Founders and an Executive Board Member of the Saratoga NFL Flag Football League. “The coaches try to get everyone involved.”

2021-22 NYS Hunting & Trapping Licenses On Sale NEW YORK STATE — New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Segos has announced that hunting and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) for the 2021-2022 seasons are on sale now. In addition, DEC announced new opportunities for hunters this year, including expanded hunting seasons and allowing youth ages 12 and 13 to hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow in upstate counties that have passed a local law and ‘opted in’ to participate.

“Hunting is a longstanding tradition for many, and an estimated half a million New Yorkers enjoy the sport each year.

The upcoming, expanded hunting seasons bring even greater excitement and opportunities to encourage greater participation in the sport,” said Commissioner Seggos. “As always, DEC encourages hunters to plan ahead, get outdoors responsibly, and follow the principles of hunter safety.”

Licenses and permits can be purchased online, at any one of DEC’s license-issuing agents, or by telephone at 866-933-2257. New hunting and trapping licenses are valid from Sept. 1 2021, through Aug. 31, 2022: annual fishing licenses are valid for 365 days from date of purchase.

New York’s habitat serves a critical role in maintaining healthy and sustainable fish and wildlife resources. Purchasing a hunting, fishing, or trapping license helps support conservation projects

and ensures the protection of the State’s natural resources. In addition, DEC encourages outdoor enthusiasts to consider purchasing a Habitat & Access Stamp each year. Funds from the $5 Habitat & Access Stamp support projects to conserve habitat and improve public access for fish and wildlife related activities.

DEER MANAGEMENT PERMITS (DMPS) DMPs are available at all license-issuing outlets, by phone, or online through Oct. 1. DMPs are used to manage the deer herd and are issued through an instant random selection process at the point of sale. The chances of obtaining a DMP remain the same throughout the application period; hunters

need not rush to apply. The 2021 chances of selection for a DMP in each Wildlife Management Unit are available online, through license-issuing agents, or by calling the DMP Hotline at 1-866472-4332. Detailed information on Deer Management Permits and this fall’s Deer Season Forecast is available on DEC’s website.
