I want to give them a bit of advice regarding a summer outing.

Everyone knows there is no equal to exercise for a good “walk.”

My advice is to shoulder your knapsack and take a two weeks tramp. I speak from personal experience. My brother and I took such a walk last summer.

Taking train from New York to Albany, we made that last named city our starting point.

With fishing tackle and 15 pounds of baggage in our knapsacks, we left Albany on Monday morning and, taking the road leading to Waterford, we made Stillwater for dinner and White Sulphur Springs for supper, (The White Sulphur Spring Hotel[ was a hotel located on the east (that is, south) end of Saratoga Lake) a days walk of 27

miles .After tea we enjoyed the bites of the fish and the mosquitos on Saratoga Lake for an hour or so and then turned in for as sweet a night’s sleep as I ever enjoyed.

The next morning after a good breakfast, we started for Glens Falls, another “stint” of 27 miles. Our way took us along the shores of Saratoga Lake for 3 miles, thence up through Union Avenue, Saratoga Village, till we came opposite the racecourse, where we struck off around the base of Mt. McGregor, as fine a bit of country walking as I ever saw. A fine road, well shaded, with romantic scenery, lent delight to the walker. We made Glens Falls for supper, having taken dinner at Dow’s Corners on the way. As the muscles of our legs had been exercised by walking, so were those of our jaws by the mastication of a so-called steak at our dining place.

Had they called it a “shingle” instead of a steak, they would have been nearer the mark.

On Wednesday morning we left the Falls for Lake George, 12 miles away. We did that last stretch in a heavy rain, but with waterproof coats and lighted pipes we did not mind it. We put up with mine host Seelye, at Joshua’s Rock, Dunham Bay, and spent a week of fishing and boating mostly boating - and started back home on Friday, walking as far as Schuylerville, where we struck up with a friendly canal boat captain, with whom we took Passage from Schuylerville to West Waterford, arriving at our destination at 4 o’clock on Monday morning. We slept on deck with our knapsacks as pillows and our pipes for

company, and listened to the choice vocabulary of the drivers, who can outswear any Mississippi pirate. Stretching our somewhat weakened limbs.we slid off down the towpath for Albany, getting there in time for breakfast, having walked 104 miles in twenty-two hours walking time and having had a glorious time, and all for the modest sum of $15 per man for the two weeks.

If there is any stationery man in the country who is fagged out and doesn’t know what to do this summer, let him throw over his doctor and spend a couple of weeks in the open air, living on country fare, and I will guarantee

that by so doing he will double his abilities as a saleman and deserve an advance of salary.

Who: Shane Crooks, Chief of Police, Saratoga Springs Police Department Q. How long have you been the Chief of Police?

A. I was promoted in September of 2019. There was a transitional period, and I started in October 2019.

Q. What prior experience do you have in law enforcement before joining the Saratoga Springs Police Department?

A. In 1997, I was hired as a Corrections Officer at the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. In 1998, I became a Patrolman and have been assigned to the dive team and traffic patrol. I was promoted to Investigator and then Sergeant with the Criminal Investigations Unit, and then to Patrol Lieutenant.

Q. What inspired you to be in law enforcement?

A. When I was younger, I wanted a job where I thought I would be able to help people.

Q. What are some of the things you find gratifying about your job?

A. It is nice to be able to protect people that are in need. As the Chief, I set the goals for the department, and get to see them through.

Q. What does a typical day look like as Chief of Police, or is there no such thing as a typical day?

A. Lots of emails, phone calls, and paperwork. It isn’t just a 9 to 5.

Q. Is summer the most active season for the Saratoga Springs Police Department?

A. From Memorial Day to Labor Day we are not just patrolling a city of 3,000; it is a vibrant downtown that attracts a lot more people.

Q. What do you like to do on your days off?

A. Being out in the wilderness, canoeing, camping, and hiking; I hike all year long. And of course, spending time with my family.

Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be in law enforcement?

A. Don’t get caught up in social media. This is a noble job. Strive to be the change. Have integrity even when no one is watching, prior to being hired and once hired.

Q. Does the police department have some sort of community outreach program, or do they do any work in the community to educate folks about law enforcement?

A. We have talked about a community engagement team. We do have community outreach officers who attend things like bike rodeos and do “Coffee with a Cop.” It is important to build rapport with the community.

Saratoga County Office For The Aging Announces New Free Dance Program BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County Office for the Aging announced a new, free program for Saratoga County residents, ages 55-and-over.

“West Coast Swing, Mambo and More! Introduction to Social Dance from Lifetime Arts” is a six-week informative workshop that runs on Fridays from Sept. 10 – Oct. 15. Participants will learn Mambo, West Coast Swing, Waltz and Merengue. This course is held entirely online, via Zoom.

Participants will build their skills week to week while exploring different styles of music and corresponding dance patterns.

Dancers will also learn the nuances of partner dancing and styling, though partners are not necessary but always welcome. Materials needed for this course include a clear open space, preferably without a rug, and a high-backed chair nearby for balance.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Bridges’ 18th Annual J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial Golf Classic, held on Aug. 9, was the most successful tournament the agency has hosted.

The event, which raised raised over $46,000 net, featured a record number of golfers – 148 -who played at the Edison Club in Rexford.

The day included a scramble format, BBQ lunch, boxed meals for dinner, complimentary beverages courtesy of Saratoga Eagle,

DIAGEO/Ketel One Botanicals and Hixny, a quarter-zip pullover sponsored by Performance Industrial, a golf towel sponsored by Cole’s Collison, goodie bags from Amsure and Stewart’s Shops and a Golf Ball Air Cannon Launcher made possible by the LaChance State Farm agency. Prizes were also awarded in multiple golf categories.

A portion of the proceeds benefit the J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The "Run" For Everyone SARATOGA SPRINGS — A half-mile “race” Run For Everyone will take place 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Pitney Meadows Community Farm, 223 West Ave. in Saratoga Springs.

Proceeds will support food and housing for hundreds in the Saratoga community and benefit Shelters of Saratoga, and regional Habitat For Humanity.

Organizers say no training, athletic ability or special apparel required and the event will be supplemented by live music, field games, lunch, and a visit of the farm. Registration is $10 – Adults, $5 - Kids under 16, pets, and

includes one race entry.

BALLSTON SPA — Despite a call for rain, the weather was perfect for a successful Horse Farm Tour offered by CCE Equine of Saratoga County. On Sunday, August 22 over 550 people came to enjoy three local horse farms: Cross Timbers Ranch, Stark Racing Stable, and Mill Creek Farm.

The Horse Farm Tour offered a behind-the-scenes experience of equine activities in Saratoga County. The public had the opportunity to tour three farms, each providing a unique perspective of the horse world. Cross Timbers Ranch allowed visitors to view their arena, obstacle course, and outdoor facilities. At Mill Creek, participants were able to see all aspects of the Thoroughbred breeding facility from the stallions to the broodmares and babies.

Stark Racing Stable allowed the public to pass through the barns and interact with their resident Standardbred horses.

Farm owners and staff were excited

to show the public the diverse equine community in Saratoga.

This event is sponsored by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors and the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund.

The contributions of these organizations allow CCE Equine to offer this program for free annually. CCE Equine seeks to continue to foster a conversation to create transparency between the public and the equine industries.

CCE Equine is a division of Cornell Cooperative Extension in Saratoga County with a mission to provide equine education in the Capitol Region. CCE Equine offers a variety of educational and networking events that support local agriculture and equine industries. Saratoga Springs Adopts Mask Policy Resolution for City Buildings, and All Public Facing Employees SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs City Council has adopted a resolution that requires all employees and visitors who are fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated, and unvaccinated to wear a face mask

when entering City buildings, facilities and/or indoor events sponsored by the City.

In addition, the resolution requires all public facing employees to wear a mask, regardless of whether indoors or outdoors.

Saratoga County to Participate in Statewide STOP-DWI Labor Day/End Of Summer Campaign SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office, police agencies and STOPDWI Coordinators will participate in special efforts to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving, county Sheriff Michael Zurlo announced.

The statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign will be in effect through Monday, Sept. 6.

New York State Police, County Sheriffs, municipal law enforcement agencies and local STOP-DWI Programs will collaborate across the state and will be out in force in this coordinated effort to reduce the number of impaired driving-related injuries and deaths.

The STOP-DWI Labor Day / End of Summer High Visibility Engagement Campaign is one of many statewide initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The Statewide STOPDWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign also targets Memorial Day, July 4, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday Season, Super Bowl weekend and St. Patrick’s Day. Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOPDWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving.

Police Chase in Greenfield Results in Gunfire, Crash GREENFIELD — A 33-yearold man suspected of attempting to steal one car before successfully stealing a second and then a third, led police on an early morning chase through Greenfield, where he crashed into a tree and required extrication from the vehicle before being airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The incident also included a Trooper discharging their firearm.

According to the county Sheriff ’s Department, the sheriff ’s office and State Police responded to a burglary call on Allen Road in Greenfield at 6:19 a.m. The caller told authorities that someone whom he did not know broke into his residence, assaulted him with a weapon and attempted to steal his vehicle.

Unsuccessful in his attempt to take the first vehicle, the suspect moved on to a neighboring

residence from where he stole a vehicle and fled. With Sheriff ’s patrols in pursuit, the driver subsequently stole a second vehicle on Locust Grove Road by blocking its path of travel and taking the vehicle from its operator at knifepoint, according to police.

After disregarding the command of a state Police Trooper who had exited his patrol car, the suspect attempted to continue northbound on Locust Grove Road, allegedly “driving at the Trooper.” The Trooper discharged their firearm, but did not hit the suspect, according to authorities.

The suspect fled north on Locust Grove Road and crashed into a tree near Greene Road. Following an extended extrication process, he was airlifted to Albany Medical Center. Police identified the suspect as 33-year-old Jeffrey A. Field of Round Top.

City UDO Nearing Completion

The intent of the Ordinance is, among other things, to encourage “appropriate and orderly” physical development, designate and regulate the location and the use of buildings and land, address traffic congestion and safeguard the city’s heritage by preserving districts and landmarks.

it, but I believe the UDO makes good on its promise to protect our city in the country,” Kelly said, during the council workshop Aug. 24. She generally cited increased energy and sustainability measures, conservation provisions which she called “robust,” and improvements of on-site development standards as some of the benefits of the UDO. The final version of the UDO is anticipated to be presented on Sept. 14 as part of a Special City Council meeting, followed by one month of public hearings, further review and comment. Adoption of the UDO is expected prior to the end of the calendar year.

Kathy Hochul Sworn in as NY Governor, Sets “Fighting Delta Variant” as Priority

ALBANY — At midnight on Aug. 24, Kathy Hochul was sworn in as the 57th Governor of the State of New York and immediately announced her priorities.

“Right now, that means fighting the Delta variant. None of us want to see a rerun of last year’s horrors with COVID-19; therefore, we will take proactive steps to prevent that from happening,” said Hochul, who is New York’s first female governor.

She listed Three “Day One initiatives” on COVID. Priority Number 1: We get children back to school and protect the environment so they can learn, and everyone is safe. As a result, we need to require vaccinations for all school personnel with an option to test out weekly—at least for now. To accomplish this in New York, we need partnerships with all levels of government, and I am working now on getting this done.

New York is launching a Back to School COVID-19 testing program to make testing for students and staff widely available and convenient. I am also immediately directing the Department of Health to institute universal masking for anyone entering our schools.

Later this week I will announce a series of schoolrelated policies that will be concise and consistent, giving the school districts what they have been asking for.

Priority Number 2: Increase vaccination rates for New Yorkers. Much progress has been made, but too many are not yet vaccinated putting themselves and their communities at risk.

With the FDA’s full approval of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday, New Yorkers can expect new vaccine requirements. More on that soon.

Priority Number 3: Prepare for Booster shots and make sure they are available and are distributed quickly and reliably. When I consulted with Dr. Fauci last week, we discussed the urgent need to ensure vaccinated individuals receive a booster dose at

8 months. I am prepared to do whatever is necessary, including reopening mass vax sites so that a booster is available to all New Yorkers who meet that timetable.

Hochul expanded on the topic of COVID while making the rounds of talk shows this week.

She spoke about the launch of the $580 million back-to-school covid testing initiative that provides every student, teacher and administrator easy access to testing before school starts.

“Mandatory masks, which is something that is not universally popular, but I think it’s an important step toward getting safety in schools,” she told CBS This Morning.

According to the CDC, nearly two-thirds (66.3%) of New Yorker statewide have received at least one dose of vaccine, and just under 60% are fully vaccinated. Those numbers are just over 71%, and just over 67%, respectively, among Saratoga County residents.

“What I don’t have is the ability to mandate vaccines because the legislature did not confer on the Governor at this time the executive powers necessary,” Hochul said.

Speaking in Saratoga Springs at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center four weeks ago, there seemingly was more optimism about the pandemic being in the rear view mirror.

“What happened after the last Pandemic in 1918? The ‘Roaring 20’s.’ It was an amazing time in our country,” Hochul said during press conference at SPAC. “I’m declaring today is the beginning of the Roaring 20’s once again.”

The latest wave of positive infections in Saratoga County began to steadily rise in early July.

The week ending July 6 showed 7 positive cases for that entire week.

The successive weeks, according to information provided by Saratoga County Public Health Services: July 6 to 11 – 16 positive cases.

July 12 to 18 – 54 positive cases.

July 19 to 25 – 109 positive cases.

July 20 to 28- 167 positive cases.

The most recent week, ending Aug. 24, counts 373 positive COVID cases among Saratoga County residents over the past seven days. The statistics detail only Saratoga County residents and not visitors to Saratoga who may have potentially tested positive for COVID. Those cases are counted in the visitors’ own county of residence, and those statistics have not been publicly shared by Saratoga County Public Health Services.

This week, the newly minted governor said she was concerned that the state is currently seeing 3,000 to 4,000 positive COVID cases each day, where it was seeing 300 to 400 daily positives in June.

“As we see this resurgence, I’m going to be doing more to empower local government officials who spend all their days training for this, the local health departments, the emergency management individuals who know how to get vaccines out,” Hochul said.

Hochul also promised one of the hallmarks of her administration will be “a new era of transparency,” explaining she will direct state entities to review their compliance with state transparency laws and provide a public report on their findings, require her counsel to come up with an expedited process to fulfill all FOIL requests as fast as possible—and post completed requests publicly online, and sign an Executive Order requiring ethics

training for every employee of state government.

Hochul expressed gratitude for the courage shown her by her family - her husband Bill and children Will and Katie for encouraging her to pursue a passion for public service; her father, “making steel by day, getting an education at night, and leaving it all to join a tech start up in the early days of computers.” Of her mother, Hochul said, “despite growing up in an abusive home and losing her own mother at a young age (she) raised six children in Buffalo, all the while engaging in social and racial justice movements.

Together, we founded a home for survivors of domestic violence when she was 70 years old—she taught me empathy.”

Saratoga Hospital Announces NARCAN Training

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A variety of locations throughout Saratoga County will host free NARCAN trainings on Aug. 31, Saratoga Hospital announced this week. At most sites, appointments are not required.

Trainings will be brief, and all participants leave with a complimentary NARCAN kit.

Note, masks must be worn appropriately at all times, regardless of vaccination status.

Rite Aid Announces Back to School COVID-19 Testing Program SARATOGA — Rite Aid and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), together with BioReference Laboratories, Inc., announced on Aug. 26 a ‘Back to School’ COVID-19 testing program offering students at New York State public schools the opportunity for free COVID19 testing prior to or at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

Students will be tested using highly accurate RT-PCR laboratorybased COVID-19 tests.

To participate in New York’s ‘Back to School’ testing program, students must pre-register and schedule a COVID-19 test appointment at one of the 115 Rite Aid drive-thru locations throughout New York State prior to returning to the classroom.

Testing appointments will become available prior to the start of the school year, and individuals are required to pre-register and schedule a time slot for testing at bioreferencelabs.bioreference. com/nyschooltesting.

Students ages 4-17 must access testing with consent from a parent or legal guardian and be accompanied by a guardian at time of testing in the drive-thru.

The ‘Back to School’ program includes The Increasing Community Access to Testing (ICATT), which is a program that helps reduce disease spread in schools, ensures that schools are

safe environments for learning, and supports the reopening of schools.

Digital results will be delivered to parents for students to bring to school. COVID-19 testing is voluntary and will be provided at no cost to the student’s family or to the school district for this program.

Past Performance is No Guarantee of Future Results

According to the US Census, Saratoga County’s population increased by 7.2 percent from 2010 to 2020.

This rise in our county’s population continues a fivedecade-long trend.

During these fifty years, the county’s population has increased 53 percent. This compares favorably with surrounding counties, like Albany County which saw a 10 percent increase during this same time, or Rensselaer at six percent, or Schenectady at five percent.

When something increased 53 percent, it sounds like a lot.

But over fifty years, it averages out to just about 1 percent growth per year. In raw numbers, the growth means about 1,600 more people a year are added to our population.

During the last 10 years, the Towns of Ballston, Halfmoon, and Malta experienced the highest percentages of growth. In prior decades, it was Wilton, Milton, Moreau and Clifton Park that often led the way. In many respects, it is the Northway corridor where our

growth has been concentrated because of the infrastructure — roads, water, and sewer — that is available in those areas.

In the City of Saratoga Springs, our population is now 28,586, up just a little more than 7 percent from ten years ago. The City added about 190 people per year during the last decade. This means we’ve experienced a .70 percent annual growth rate.

We need this type of reasonable growth to continue if we want to sustain our economic success and quality of life. We also must simultaneously plan for our future growth. Our planning must include efforts to preserve our local farms, open spaces, and historical properties. We need to continue the many local and county efforts to integrate and expand our trail systems. We need more workforce housing so more people can live near where they work. We need expanded public transportation as well.

Our five decades of growth is no accident. But it is unique.

Two-thirds of all counties in New York State saw a decrease in their population in the last ten years. We are fortunate to have tremendous amenities that make living here attractive. The list of these attractions includes but is NOT limited to: SPAC and our arts and cultural attractions; the Track, Casino, and Fasig Tipton; the Great Sacandaga, Saratoga

Lake, the Hudson River, and our canal system; three beautiful state parks and the Saratoga National Historical Park; as well as an abundance of locally-owned small businesses in every City, Town and Village across the county.

Our k-12 schools are among the top performing in the state.

They are constantly innovating.

In many cases, the people moving here went to school here themselves years before. As they start to have families, they come back knowing this is a great place to raise their children too. At the Chamber, we call

these people “rebounders.” They come back with trailing spouses making them highly sought after by local employers growing their local operations.

The Chamber is working to grow our population because we need more people to fill the local jobs we now have. Our Healthy Saratoga campaign is part of our talent recruitment effort. More so now than perhaps ever before, we expect people will want to live in healthy communities going forward. The work of our Veterans Business Council helps to promote Saratoga County as a great place

for Veterans and their families to live and work. Our work to promote Saratoga County as a great place to visit has also helped us convince people to live here.

Thinking of the success and growth we’ve seen in the last fifty years, I am reminded of the quote often used in the investment community. “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.”

We cannot be complacent. Where we can do better, we should. That’s what those leaders before us did over the last fifty years. Let’s make them proud by continuing this tradition for the next fifty years.

Saratoga’s Novelty: Tailgate and Party

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tailgate and Party has had a successful summer at their new location on Phila Street.

Tailgate and Party on 33 Phila Street, diagonal to Ben & Jerry’s is your go-to, one-stop-shop for all things celebration. The store has an assortment of merchandise that you might not find elsewhere, from track necessities to hostess gifts and milestone birthday supplies, including helium balloons. As the seasons change, owner Kirsten Lambert said some of the merchandise in the fall will

transition to represent that, with more coolers, NFL gear, and tailgate-related items – true to the store’s name. However, a bestseller throughout the seasons has been their adult drinking games.

Lambert said that customers who come into the store and see the display always have a story to tell or a memory to share.

“It is a very happy store,” said Lambert. “Everyone is always laughing as they go through and look around at what we have.”

Tailgate and Party fills a need for Saratoga, which Lambert realized when she had a hard time finding supplies for her mom’s 80th birthday.

Lambert had always said she wanted to be three things in life – a hairdresser, a teacher (which she was for 25 years), and to work in a store. So, she opened Tailgate and Party, and found out that much like teaching, there is a planning aspect to owning a party store.

This summer has been quite successful since the move from the corner of Henry and Caroline

Street to Phila Street. Traffic is heavy in the morning, as customers wait for brunch downtown or the track to open. But as she has learned from other local Saratoga business owners, there is never a “method to the madness”.

“When I was on Henry and Caroline Street during the pandemic, I got to meet and talk to the locals. I learned so much

about Saratoga,” said Lambert.

“It was great preparation going into this new location. We want to keep evolving, changing, and moving forward.”

BALLSTON SPA — Back after a one-year hiatus, the triumphant return of the popular Saratoga Balloon and BBQ Festival, the Festival will occupy the Saratoga County Fairgrounds August 27-29 for three days of family fun. Due to covid-19 concerns, the Festival organizers moved from the traditional Father’s Day weekend to the new dates in late August when the event was more likely to happen without restrictions.

Once again, the schedule is jam packed with highlights: Friday features the Dare Devil Trained Dog Show, balloon launches at about 6:30 p.m., the Brent McCoy Comedy Juggling Act, and the Balloon Glow at dusk. Saturday is the longest day with more dog shows, another day with Brent McCoy, tethered balloon rides, helicopter rides, and the evening balloon launch. On Sunday there are two new additions, The Car Show with 100 cars from 11 to 3 and the New York Steak Cook Off with dozens of teams competing for the prizes and fame and bragging rights. Every day, every minute of the Festival, the Kids Zone is in full swing with bounce houses, pony rides, a petting farm, face painting, a designated magician, Shawn, a balloon twister, and games. There is live music daily in the Music Barn next to the Beer Garden serving craft beer, wines, and wine

slushies. There is a wide choice of food including four BBQ rigs, some local and an award-winning pit master from Ohio, the Smoke Shack, plus Jamaican Jerk Chicken, brick oven wood fired pizza, turkey legs, burgers, and more. Network Saratoga LLC Launches New Website for Engaged Couples SARATOGA SPRINGS — Network Saratoga LLC has launched their new website, Network Wedding Guide at www.

The new website is a memberbased virtual showcase of venues and wedding professionals in the Saratoga, Adirondack, and Capital Region areas with exclusive offers just for members.

Network Saratoga LLC owner, Fran Dingeman, has been creating and coordinating wedding shows in the Saratoga region for over 20 years.

“When the pandemic hit, one of the many industries that was drastically impacted was the wedding and event industry,” said Dingeman. “As a company that produced nine events in Saratoga in 2019, having to reduce to two in 2020 was a significant decrease.

As many businesses did over that time, we focused more on virtual and digital endeavors.”

The creation of Network Wedding Guide was funded through a Saratoga County grant offered to help local businesses who demonstrated a need due to COVID. “We created Network WeddingGuide.com to help as many local businesses as possible,” said Dingeman. “A select group of local wedding professionals are featured with business descriptions, photos, and an exclusive offer that is only available through

the Network Wedding Guide website. Engaged couples are invited to enter the site for a nominal fee. Once on the site, they will be entitled to savings offered by each vendor when they purchase their services through the designated site portal.”

Network Wedding Guide premiered in August with 34 wedding industry participants representing 18 vendor categories.

Once engaged couples pay for access to the site, they check back as often as they like.

Network Saratoga LLC plans to host in-person wedding shows again in 2022, beginning with the Longfellows Wedding Show on Feb. 27, now in its 21st year.

“The landscape looks positive for the wedding industry right now, with many 2020 weddings and events rescheduled for 2021 and 2022,” said Dingeman. “The majority of professionals we work with are extremely busy and are hopeful about next year as well!”

UPSIDE RISK

for Saratoga TODAY In high school physics class, I learned that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed. Within investments, the same principle applies to risk.

To start, risk is a tricky thing to define. The financial world has settled on a measure of volatility called standard deviation.

Although imperfect for a variety of reasons, standard deviation gives a quantifiable measure of how bumpy the ride has been which is a reasonable approximation for how it will be moving forward. Unfortunately, volatility is usually equated with losses.

What about the opportunity cost of missed gains?

As a society, we have been conditioned to think that financial risk is checking our monthly

statement and seeing a lower number than the month before.

That type of downside risk is intuitive and easy to understand – money, which was once yours, no longer appears to be so. Upside risk is much more abstract in an alternate universe type of mental exercise – we have no way of accurately quantifying what might have been. Our desire to hold onto what is already ours will sometimes cause us to make short-term decisions with longterm money because the pain of losing money is greater than the satisfaction of making money.

In finance textbooks, the risk-free rate of return is typically the return on a government issued bond. This is somewhat of a misnomer for an individual investor with a “cash under the mattress” mentality. Inflation is a silent killer of financial plans for those who “don’t want any risk.”

Unaccounted for, it gradually eats away at the spending power of your money which technically leaves you with less money than you had before. Mentally, it is the easiest risk to cope with because we trick ourselves into saying that we still have the same amount of nominal dollars as we did before. Inflation risk doesn’t even compare to the upside risk we spoke about before. I have talked to plenty of people who have been sitting in cash for years just waiting for things to calm

down to get back into the market. This type of second-guessing is a paralyzing fear. Afraid to make a misstep, investors instead do nothing and jeopardize their growth potential. Like inflation, upside risk is invisible, but potentially catastrophic for a financial plan. To tie this back to physics class, moving money into cash is not de-risking the portfolio, it is merely a transformation of the risks that one is bearing.

In the short-term, cash is the safest investment and stocks are one of the riskiest. As one zooms out, those roles become reversed.

The problem for many is that when downside risk rears its head, focus shifts to the short-term. “It’s just for now. I’ll re-invest when things calm down,” we tell ourselves. The coast is never completely clear, and the invisible losses incurred by sitting in cash for too long have a negative compounding effect on

future plans. Investors are always searching for the optimal portfolio or investment strategy. The solution is clear: whichever strategy you can stick with. As always, it helps to have an objective voice on your side to help see the big picture.

hen you take a trip to the farmers’ market in August, what do you expect to find?

Surely, fresh produce comes to mind. Sweet corn, tomatoes, and peppers. Maybe eggs, bread, or meats. While those are all certainly a big part of the market right now, keep an eye out for these more unexpected products the next time you visit the farmers’ market.

SIP YOUR WAY TO WELLNESS

The lush array of plants and herbs at Green Jeans Market Farm include some unusual items that you might have never thought to grow yourself. Take the stevia plant: rather than the powdered white substance found at the grocery store, the plant’s lush green leaves add a hint of natural sweetness to tea or baked goods. we are Italian”

Hello my Foodie Friends !

Today is my mother-in-law’s 89th birthday. We have been blessed to have her in our lives for so many years. This coming week would have also have been my mother’s birthday. Both my mother and mother-in-law come for Saratoga TODAY from the Depression era with their Italian heritage being Sicilian and Neapolitan. For both mothers, the meal and the preparation of the meal was the most important part of the day.

Italians hold food and cooking and ingredients and mealtime in high regard. They value a good meal and even more when it is in good company. Over the years, the quest to learn the family recipes has resulted in a form of translation into recipes. Even to this day when my wife attempts to teach our daughter the family recipe for her sauce (gravy), it becomes difficult since it was really the taste that was handed down over the generations. The most common response when learning the family recipes from her mother and grandmother was “this is how you make…” There was nothing written down. Italian dishes are tweaked and improvised all the time. But it’s about learning the cuisine like you learn the grammar of a language - there are forms and structures you need to master. There are underlying frameworks of how ingredients are thought of and how they come together and also cooking techniques, styles of presentation and the order and structure of a meal which all combined form the Italian cuisine language. If you don’t know any of this, then of course you run the risk of making things that any

a k d o V a l Penne al INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

• Kosher salt

• 1 medium (8-ounce) yellow onion, diced

• One 4 1/2-ounce tube concentrated tomato paste or 6-ounce can tomato paste

• 3 medium cloves garlic, thinly sliced • Pinch red pepper flakes

• One 14 1/2-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes • 1 cup heavy cream

• 1 pound short tubular pasta, such as rigatoni or penne • 1/4 cup vodka, plus more if desired • 2 ounces (grated ParmigianoReggiano), plus more for serving

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large (3- or 4-quart) saucepan or small Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, and red pepper flakes, season lightly with salt, and cook, stirring frequently, until onions are very soft but not browned, about 15 minutes; lower heat if needed to prevent browning.

2. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, until tomato paste is fragrant and thick, about 3 minutes. Stir in canned tomatoes with their liquid. Bring to a simmer, then cook, stirring often and crushing the whole tomatoes roughly with a spoon, until sauce has thickened slightly, about 10 minutes.

3. Add cream, and stir to incorporate. Transfer sauce to a blender, and blend until very smooth (you may be able to make an immersion blender work, but in our tests the sauce level was too low to safely avoid splattering). Wipe out pot, then return blended sauce to it. Season lightly with salt.

4. In a medium pot of salted boiling water, cook pasta until just shy of al dente, about 3 minutes less than the package directs. About 1 minute before you transfer pasta to sauce, add vodka to tomato sauce

and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

5. Using a spider skimmer or slotted spoon, transfer pasta directly to sauce pot along with 1/2 cup pasta water (alternatively, reserve 2 cups pasta water, then drain pasta in a colander, then add to sauce with 1/2 cup of the reserved water). Increase heat to high, and cook, stirring constantly, until pasta is well coated in sauce and reaches the al dente stage, about 3 minutes. If sauce thickens too much before pasta is ready, add more pasta water in 1/4 cup increments as needed.

6. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until thoroughly incorporated into a smooth and creamy sauce. Taste for salt, and season with more if needed. If you can’t detect the vodka at all, you can add a few drops more and stir it in before serving; exactly how boozy you want the sauce is a question of taste, but be careful because a heavy hand will ruin the dish. Spoon pasta and sauce onto warmed serving plates and top with additional grated cheese. Serve immediately.

BEST EQUIPMENT TO USE: 3 Quart sauce pan or 5 quart Dutch oven.

Italian will find a little off. This doesn’t necessarily mean these creations are bad - it just means that they won’t seem Italian anymore, even if they’re not unpleasant or even are very good. People from within a certain food culture (or who know it like a native) can just “tell” when something tastes like it was made by someone who understands the palette of that cuisine.

Throughout the generations, having the right pots and tools are as important as putting together the meal. There are important essential tools you need for making the foods from our various cultures. What difference could a pan make to the final result? Well, a risotto made in a paella pan would never have the soft gluey quality of a good risotto. A saute’ pan or a good sauce pan is important. The saute’, because of its depth and curved sides, is better for braising meat or vegetables than a frying pan. The straight sides on a sauté pan do a better job of locking in moisture, making it ideal for braising chicken thighs or sausages until they are juicy and tender.

Pasta should be cooked in a cylindrical pot so the water returns to the boil more quickly once you have added the pasta, preventing the shapes from sticking together. Important essential tools to have include; having a Dutch oven the thick cast-iron walls also retain heat for a long time, making it the perfect serving vessel for bringing your food right to the table. Your soup or pasta will stay warm while people help themselves from the big pot. The “spider” is a small strainer basket that makes it easy to pluck pasta and gnocchi out of the pasta pot and dump it right into your simmering pan of sauce. Just the right amount of pasta water carries over, plus you don’t have to schlep a big pot of boiling water to the sink to drain. These are just a “few” of the cool tools you can use to help you with your work.

We have the pots and pans, and many other accouterments’ you need to make that meal. Every family has a favorite recipe. Ask family members to teach you the traditional recipes that have endured over the generations.

Sheep Shearing Clinic Saratoga County 4-H is offering a Sheep Shearing Clinic this fall to youth ages 10 and older. The event will take place at the 4-H Training Center on Middleline Road in Ballston Spa on September 16 at 5 p.m. This clinic will exhibit the art of sheep shearing and preparing wool breeds for show. Participants will be provided a hands-on learning experience from professional shearer Siri Swanson.

Siri Swanson is a Shepherd and Shearer of Yankee Rock Farm.

Swanson has abundance of background knowledge in the sheep industry and has been shearing for the last 5 years. Siri along with shearing partner, Colin Siegmund, strive to maintain animal comfort and top-quality clipping. Space is limited and expected to fill quickly. 48th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival The 48th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival takes place Thursday to Sunday, September 23 to 26, in multiple locations.

As always, the event is 100% free for the community. Festival Merchandise, one of the event’s biggest fundraisers, will be for sale at select events, with a smaller selection than in previous years.

This year, the Balloon Festival cannot allow vendors, children’s activities, or the Open Door breakfast. Pilots can’t take paid passengers this year. At the airport, you can attend a drivethrough moonglow to observe

40 tethered balloons on display, lit up from within. There will also be a brand-new event at East Field with a live band, 8-10 balloons, and possibly a fireworks display. The Adirondack Balloon Festival’s launches are subject to weather conditions. Contact the Adirondack Balloon Festival, a registered 501(c)3, to sponsor this free event for the community and make a tax-deductible contribution to keep the festival going. Summer Lunch Program for Children This summer during the months of July and August the First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa will sponsor a Summer Lunch Program for children living in and around the village.

At UPH: Dinosaurs in Motion Changes Hours of Operation SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dinosaurs in Motion: Where Art and Science Meet at the Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs has changed their hours of operation.

Universal Preservation Hall will now be open from 10 a.m. with the last admittance at 4 p.m. every day except for Wednesday.

Starting Thursday, Sept. 9, UPH will keep the hours at 10 a.m., with the last admittance at 4 p.m. but will only be open Thursday-Sunday.

Hud Armstrong Publishes New Book, and You May Recognize Some Longtime Saratogians as its Characters SARATOGA SPRINGS — Several years in the making about decades gone by in Saratoga, longtime Saratoga Springs bartender, artist and cartoonist Hud Armstrong has published a new book featuring hundreds of his cartoons that appeared from 1991 to 2006 in Poor Richard's Journal.

Hud's cartoons compilation follows Booker D. and the N.G.s (New Guys) as they navigate life in a rapidly changing upstate New York town known for its "health, history and horses."

Many of the characters are based on friends and coworkers he has known for decades, and offer their observations on everything from current events to sports, upstate weather, Saratoga's rich history and its love-hate relationship with the crowds who flock here every racing season.

A new book has been published by the Spa City’s Hudson “Hud” Armstrong.

The Egg and UAlbany Performing Arts Centers Announce Diverse Dance Series

ALBANY — For the sixth year, the performing arts centers at The Egg and the University at Albany will present Dance in Albany, a joint dance series featuring nine performances for the 2021-22 season. The lineup mixes several companies from the 201920 season who were postponed by the pandemic as well as many others new to the series schedule.

Six of the performances will take place at The Egg at the Empire State Plaza with the remaining three at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown University at Albany campus. The series features styles that range from flamenco to hip-hop to Indian dance along with plenty of modern and ballet with more than half of the performances featuring live music. Many on the schedule are companies who are commemorating or have just recently celebrated major anniversaries.

Dance enthusiasts have the opportunity to purchase a package with a ticket to each performance for $130, a savings of over

40% off the individual prices.

Adirondack Balloon Festival Returns in September

QUEENSBURY — The Adirondack Balloon Festival will return in September for its 48th year, with a brand-new format, expanding to include a new event at East Field in Glens Falls, multiple launch sites throughout Warren and Washington counties, a drive-through moonglow, and more.

“This will not be the sameold, same-old Adirondack Balloon Festival you know from years past,” says Mark Donahue, President of the organization’s Board of Directors, in a statement. “Due to COVID, we had

to totally reinvent the festival this year. We are excited to bring back the joy and wonder of the mass ascensions, while keeping safe and still having fun.”

The 48th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival takes place Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 23 to 26, in multiple locations. The event is 100% free for the community. Festival Merchandise, one of the event’s biggest fundraisers, will be for sale at select events, with a smaller selection than in previous years.

Grand Opening for New Capital Repertory Theatre ALBANY — Capital Repertory Theatre held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 24 to celebrate the grand opening of their new theatre at 251 North Pearl St. The event featured a performance by Ethel Waters.

Celebrating its 40th year overall, theREP, a professional resident theatre, announced its purchase of a former commercial bakery in 2017 and its intention to relocate from a formerly rented facility at 111 N. Pearl St. A $14 million renovation project followed.

The project included a 309seat MainStage, a 70-seat black box theatre, an open lobby with concessions, and expanded support space including dressing rooms, prop and costume shops, administrative offices and a VIP lounge.

BOB WILSON It’s early morning at beautiful Saratoga Racecourse...

A paddock area picnic table adjacent to his shoeshine stand is the perfect setting to discuss the colorful life of a Saratoga original, Bob Wilson. It’s been over a half century since he first set up shop. He is back and this is his story.

for Saratoga TODAY Our conversation brought us to 1969, when Bob continued a family boyhood tradition of mastering the art of shining shoes. His older brothers Harry, and then Floyd, preceded him for over a decade prior to Bob taking over the venture. He speaks fondly of his memories of Alfred G. Vanderbilt, who made frequent visits to get the professional shine that the Wilson brothers were known for. He was good for a two-dollar tip when a shine cost a mere forty cents. Woody Stephens, trainer of five Belmont Stakes winners, was a repeat customer. Hall of Fame jockeys John Rotz and Eddie Maple were patrons as well. It wasn’t just owners, trainers and jockeys that lined up for a shine. The great musical genius Cab Calloway took a side trip to Bob’s stand, yet it was the regular guy that was the bulk of his clientele.

This was the era when race goers came dressed for the occasion. Shorts were for the beach and sneakers were reserved for the basketball courts.

Leather shoes finished off the look of distinction and Bob had the ingredients to make them shine. He fashioned a technique that he uses to this day. The leather is gently washed with his own formula, then the polish is applied to his exacting measurements.

Now it’s time for the finishing touch. He maneuvers the polishing cloth with precision. His hands are quick, yet pliable. Bob works the cloth like Sandy Koufax would work a no-hitter. With that the pro’s job is complete. The customer glances down. He has a slight smile on his face when he sees a pair of shoes honed to perfection. The scene is played out over and over throughout the meet.

There is much more to Bob’s story than his shoeshine expertise. He is a retired Air Force veteran of twenty years who served at military bases throughout the world. He was a part of Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War. His son Bob Jr. has taken service to his country one step further. He served four tours of duty in Afghanistan. Bob is a proud father and

an American patriot. On occasion he shows his love of country wearing shirts that portray the colors of the American flag. He mentioned that he would like nothing more than to sing the National Anthem here at the track. Bob wants to dedicate it to his son and all our troops in harm’s way. In jest I asked him if he would audition his voice for me. He belted out the first verse of the anthem. I was stunned as to how well he sang it. I am no Simon Cowell, but I can tell you this, he deserves the honor that he aspires to.

If you are at the track in these remaining days of the meet, Bob and his stand are a familiar sight adjacent to the Racing Secretary’s office. Some of the sharpest handicappers on the grounds can be found at chairs close by. Whether you need a shine or just would like to say hello, Bob Wilson will welcome you and make you feel like a winner.

Bob made a comment that I think is worth passing on. Bobby Flay stopped by his stand one day earlier in the meet. Bob explained to him that “I shine shoes like you put out a plate of food.” Having watched Beat Bobby Flay on more than one occasion and witnessed Bob Wilson’s shoe shining expertise, I can attest to the validity of the statement. They are both the masters of their trade.

In closing I would like to say that Bob is one of a kind. He has a world of knowledge, especially when it comes to New York Giants football. Former Giants head coach Bill Parcells found Bob’s grasp of the game impressive. The two enjoyed their share of conversations discussing the team’s progress.

Bob loves the time he spends at the racetrack. The lure of the horse racing scene is in his blood. He says proudly that there is nowhere that he would rather be. If all goes well Bob plans on heading to sunny South Florida this winter to ply his trade at Gulfstream Park. He will be back at the Spa for the 2022 meet. His many friends and acquaintances will surely celebrate his return.

eek Eight, the final week of the 2021 racing season at Saratoga Race Course begins September 1 and will see six straight days of racing with ten stakes races. Two Grade I races anchor the Saturday September 4 card.

The highlight of the final week is Saturday when the Jockey Club Gold Cup will sport an enhanced $1,000,000 purse and a new location at Saratoga. It replaces the Woodward Stakes that will be run at Belmont this Fall. The timing, distance and purse are meant to position the race as a springboard to the Breeder’s Cup Classic run November 6. Previously run at Belmont Park whose track configuration required an awkward starting position for the mile and one quarter distance, The Jockey Club Gold Cup now has a better starting position on Saratoga’s mile and an eighth oval.

The Saturday card has a second Grade I race in the Flower Bowl for older fillies and mares at a mile and three-eighths on the grass with a $600,000 purse. This race also has been moved from Belmont to Saratoga and sees a distance change to a mile and three eighths to match the distance of the upcoming Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare turf to be run November 6.

The Prioress a Grade II for three-year-old fillies sprinting 6 furlongs for $250,000 and the Saranac a Grade III for three-year-olds going a mile and a sixteenth on the grass for $200,000 round out the undercard.

The historical significance of the Jockey Club Gold Cup cannot be overstated. The astounding list of its winners includes – Man o’ War, Gallant Fox, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Citation, Nashua (twice), Kelso (an unfathomable five straight times), Buckpasser, Damascus, Shuvee (twice), Forego, Affirmed, John Henry, Easy Goer, Cigar, Skip Away (twice) and Curlin (twice). Through its history it has been run at numerous distances and at different racetracks and its renewal in 2021 at Saratoga begins yet another new chapter.

Before discussing the rest of the week, I want to look back at a maiden winner on August 19. Saratoga is about special moments and special people. Many are well known- others are not. Owner Michael Dubb’s first homebred winner – Marvelous Maude - is named after Maude Walsh who is known to many owners and fans for her love and knowledge of the sport and through her former work in Horseman’s Relations for the NYRA. Last week Maude and her husband Dan Kadyszewski were in the Winner’s Circle to celebrate the win of her namesake. She told me “When Chad Brown told me he ‘had my horse,’ I was flattered to find it was named for me.

Winning at Saratoga was special for this Maude, who is also a New York bred.”

Wit, This year’s favorite for the Grade I Hopeful, aftering winning The Sanford earlier this racing season at Saratoga.

The beginning of the final week starts on Wednesday with the With Anticipation a Grade III grass event at a mile and a sixteenth for 2-year-olds.

Thursday features the filly counterpart to the With Anticipation with the P. G Johnson Stakes for twoyear old fillies on the grass at a mile and a sixteenth.

The race is a personal favorite of mine as it is named in honor of one of my earliest employers – Hall of Fame trainer Phil Johnson. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997, Johnson trained thoroughbreds for parts of seven decades compiling 2,315 wins while training the winners of scores of stakes races. Quiet Little Table’s upset of the mighty Forego in the 1977 Suburban is just one example. Johnson won training titles at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga and won at least one race at Saratoga for 36 consecutive years 1962-2003.

His most famous win occurred in his native Chicago when Volponi (a horse Johnson bred) won the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Arlington Park at odds of 43-1. It was the culmination of almost 60 years of knowledge and dedication and Johnson’s biggest win.

(Notably, his training feat that day unearthed an ongoing computer fraud by industry computer programmers engaging in post-race betting into the pick 6 pools. Not only did Johnson’s Volponi defeat a world-class field that day he saved bettors and the sport from the ongoing theft.)

I spoke this week with one of Johnson’s daughters – Karen Johnson - who modestly and graciously said “My sister Kathy and I always look forward to the

day the P.G. Johnson Stakes is run. Through the great kindness of former NYRA racing secretary, Mike Lakow, a race was named in my dad’s honor, one year after his passing. With Covid last year, we weren’t able to make the trophy presentation, so we’re really looking forward to resuming the honor this year.”

Friday’s highlight is the Lucky Coin for older horses at five and one-half furlongs on the turf.

On Sunday two-year-old fillies stretch out to 7 furlongs in the Grade I Spinaway which has been run since 1880 and won by the incomparable Ruffian in 1974. This year’s renewal expects to highlight recent winner Echo Zulu.

The 2021 meet wraps up with a Monday Labor Day card featuring two stakes -the Grade II Bernard Baruch at mile and a sixteenth for 3-year-olds and up and the Grade I Hopeful for two year olds at 7 furlongs. The Hopeful is traditionally the closing day feature having been run since 1901. Past winners of the Hopeful include Secretariat and Affirmed. This year’s favorite is expected to be the undefeated Wit from the Todd Pletcher barn.

It has become a common saying that Saratoga Race Course is the summer place to be.

It is also a coincidence that there are two mares with the same name that somewhat reflects the adage: Summer in Saratoga.

The first mare, a New York-bred born in 2002, had just one win in 24 races, including three starts at Saratoga, before retiring and becoming a broodmare at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds and Ted Taylor Thoroughbreds.

The other mare, born in Kentucky five years ago from the sire-dam combination of Grade 1 winners Hard Spun and Love Theway Youare, has been more successful for trainer Joe Sharp and owner Larry Hirsch with his Highlander Training Center in Texas.

Since being purchased for $165,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age sale, this particular Summer in Saratoga has won five

races, including two stakes races on the turf this year, and has earned $332,072 in 14 career starts.

It also seems appropriately fitting that Summer in Saratoga had been nominated for the Grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes as part of the Saturday’s Travers Day undercard. Though, Sharp said he is uncertain if she will make her first appearance at Saratoga.

“I’ve always wanted to bring her up here,” Sharp said.

“I thought it would be nice. This year, the way the timing worked out, she got off-track a little bit.”

Summer in Saratoga finished fourth and third in her first two starts for then-trainer Chad Brown and then-owner William Lawrence. About two months after the sale, she made significant improvement that led to her first career win in October 2019, and that became a pathway to other victories with the Tom Benson Memorial Stakes and Indiana General Assembly Distaff Stakes this year.

“I just think she was immature,” Sharp said. “Some horses are precocious when they are young.

She’s a big filly with a big frame and she needed time to develop into herself. She was in great condition when we got her from Chad. I just think she was kind of a late bloomer.”

“She has some upside with her in her pedigree,” he added. “So, we bought her with a long-term plan of getting her some black type. Obviously, everything has fallen into place well with her.”

Paralleling to the mare’s success, Sharp’s season at Saratoga has also fallen into place. At the end of the sixth week of the meet, Sharp was within contention of being one of the top 10 trainers with six winners from 23 starters, which is close to his season-best of eight winners from 29 starters in 2018, and he has been training on his own for just seven years after being an assistant to Michael Stidham and Michael Maker.

“It has been a great meet,” he said. “It is definitely one of our stronger meets. It is comparable to a couple of years ago. Obviously, we had some good racing luck with the right kind of horses. We have been fortunate to get some good racing luck and getting everything lined up.”

This season is also a contrast from last year when Sharp was forced to stay home in Kentucky due to surgery to remove a benign brain tumor and the COVID-19 pandemic. With just 13 starters, his team still came away with two winners.

Sharp, a former jockey, is also back to riding and working horses. On Saturday, he was aboard recent West Virginia Senate President's Cup Stakes winner Catch a Bid for a workout over the Oklahoma Training Track.

“Last year, we didn’t send as many horses up here due to COVID-19 and my surgeries because I wasn’t able to come up here at all,” he said. “This year, we rented a place and hit it full stride. Personally and physically, I have come a long way. I’ve been feeling good. I’ve been able to get back on horses. Last year at this time, I was sitting in a recliner with staples in my head. It’s amazing what a year can do.”

Summer in Saratoga and Sharp are not the only ones who have made an improvement over the past year.

Other horses have made an impression coming out of Sharp’s barn.

Absolute Love, a 6-year-old mare that Sharp claimed for $8,000 earlier this year at Churchill Downs, was his first starter as she got there in the final strides to win $12,500. As she approached the Winner’s Circle, he learned that she was claimed by Rob Atras for $12,500. Waiting nearly a month for her return, Sharp got Absolute Love back for $16,000 as 13 other trainers put in a claim for her.

Coming off a nine-month layoff, Runnin’ Ray is 2-for-2 this year with an 11-length win in a $20,000 claiming race at Churchill Downs followed by a victory in a starter allowance race at Saratoga on July 30.

Just over a week later, Sharp came back with four more winners: Fast Boat, Lady Danae, Flint Ridge and Lookin to Fly. Rebounding from a struggling finish over a yielding Belmont turf course in the Grade 1 Jaipur, Fast Boat just up in the final strides for his second graded stakes win in the Grade 3 Troy. The 6-year-old gelding who claimed for $40,000 three years ago has won nine races while earning more than $400,000.

Meanwhile, Lady Danae, Flint Ridge and Lookin to Fly each graduated from the maiden ranks.

With just under two weeks remaining in the Saratoga season, Sharp has sent most of his prior winners back to Kentucky, with the exception of Runnin’ Ray who may make another start in an allowance race near the end of the meet.

He hopes that his remaining horses, which includes unraced Sacred Samurai possibly being pointed for a maiden race on the Travers Day undercard, can help his stable finish strong.

“Timing-wise off those kind of races, you cannot bring them back within 2-3 weeks,” he said. “We still have a couple of horses to run. So, we are hoping to close it out strong.”

FRIDAY, AUGUST 27 NEW YORK SHOWCASE DAY: The annual flagship event to highlight the strength and success of the New York breeding program will feature six state-bred stakes headlined by the $250,000 Albany, a nine-furlong test for sophomores. The lucrative card will include the $200,000 Fleet Indian for sophomore fillies going 1 1/8 miles; the $200,000 Funny Cide, presented by Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, for 2-year-olds sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track; the $200,000 Seeking the Ante for 2-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs; the $150,000 West Point, presented by Trustco Bank, for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf; and the $150,000 Yaddo, a handicap for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon turf course.

The Knight Caps, the official glee club of the United States Military Academy at West Point, will kick off the day with a special performance of the National Anthem.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28 RUNHAPPY TRAVERS DAY: Led by Belmont Stakes and Jim Dandy winner Essential Quality, the nation’s top 3-year-olds will meet at the Spa for the marquee race of the summer season – the Grade 1, $1.25 million Runhappy Travers. The 152nd edition of the race is sponsored by Runhappy, a champion sprinter currently standing at Claiborne Farm.

Gates open at 7 a.m. with first post time of 11:35 a.m.

Breakfast and tram tours are not offered on Runhappy Travers Day. The Runhappy Travers is the centerpiece of a card featuring seven stakes and six Grade 1s, offering $4.6 million in total purse money, including the Grade 1, $750,000 Resorts World Sword Dancer; Grade 1, $600,000

Personal Ensign presented by Lia Infiniti; Grade 1, $500,000 Ketel One Ballerina; Grade 1, $600,000 Forego; and Grade 1, $500,000 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.

Rounding out the blockbuster card is the Grade 2, $400,000 Ballston Spa. For the third consecutive year, FOX will air the Runhappy Travers as the centerpiece of a 90-minute telecast beginning at 5 p.m. The networks of FOX Sports will air 6.5 hours of live racing and analysis on Runhappy Travers Day, with coverage scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on FS1.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 29 BETTER TALK NOW: The day’s feature is the $120,000 Better Talk Now for 3-year-olds at a mile on the turf.

NEW YORK CRAFT BEER AND SPIRITS SPECIALS New York Showcase Day will highlight beverages produced and distilled in the Empire State. Fans will enjoy New York craft beer, available in a 20-ounce commemorative Jockey Boot, for $10. The craft beer specials will be available at the Fourstardave Sports Bar and nearby Druthers Brewing Company Gazebo, as well as the Saranac Brewery portable bar on the second floor of the grandstand. 4-H to Host Military Kids Fishing Derby SARATOGA COUNTY — Saratoga County 4-H will be hosting a Fishing Derby for youth of military families on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event will take place at the 4-H Training Center on Middleline Rd. in Ballston Spa. Youth participants will receive a free fishing pole, and youth and families will receive t-shirts. Lunch will also be provided to all participants.

Youth Intro: Teaches the fundamentals of archery, safety, and equipment use for ages 8-13 yrs. Saturdays from 2 to 3 p.m. or Sundays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Roc-N-Tots and Baby Jamboree: Fun music and movement classes. Roc-N-Tots is Wednesdays from 11 to 11:30 a.m. for ages 18 months to 2 yrs. and 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 2-5 yrs. Baby Jamboree is Thursday from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.

Twinkle Toes: Ballet and tap classes are combined in this class for ages 4- 6 yrs. Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7 p.m. or Saturdays from 12:05 to 1:05 p.m.

T-ball and Baseball: These leagues combine practice and skills building with a game at the end. Volunteer parent coaches are needed. T-ball (4-6 yrs.) on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Baseball (6-8 yrs.) on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 12 to 2 p.m. Start time for leagues will alternate based on the game schedule.

The 18th Annual J. Michael Fitzgibbons Golf Classic Nets Over $46,000 for Saratoga Bridges

REXFORD — The Saratoga Bridges’ 18th Annual J. Michael Fitzgibbons Memorial Golf Classic was the most successful tournament the agency has hosted, raising over $46,000 net.

Held on Aug. 9, a record number of golfers played at the Edison Club in Rexford, NY. The day included a scramble format, BBQ lunch, boxed meals for dinner, complimentary beverages courtesy of Saratoga Eagle, DIAGEO/ Ketel One Botanicals, and Hixny, a quarter-zip pullover sponsored by Performance Industrial, a golf towel sponsored by Cole’s Collison, goodie bags from Amsure and Stewart’s Shops, and a Golf Ball Air Cannon Launcher made possible by the LaChance State Farm Agency.

Volunteers Sought for 43rd Grandstand Admission: Freihofer’s Run for Women Runhappy Travers Day ALBANY — With a little more than a month to go until the 43rd Freihofer’s Run for Women (Saturday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m.), event organizers are seeking volunteers for a variety of positions both on race day and during the week leading up to the prestigious all-women road race.

Some of the roles available for the 5K include event set up and tear down, course/finish line water stops, refreshments, and packet pick-up/registration.

Support is also needed for both of the Freihofer’s Run for Women’s companion events, the Freihofer’s Junior 3K and Freihofer’s Kids’ Run, which are offered to children ages three to 14. Tasks include organizing runners at the start and finish of each event, guiding and directing runners out on the course, assisting at the finish line, as well as handing out awards.

“It takes about 600 volunteers to make all three events run smoothly,” said Freihofer’s Run for Women Volunteer Coordinator Rachel Gershon Rourke.

“Whether you have a few hours or more to spare, we’d appreciate your support to ensure this event remains the Capital Region’s premier running event.”

The Freihofer’s Run for Women also needs individuals on Wednesday, Sept. 22 to break down and organize pallets of donated food. Assistance is also sought to help vendors locate and set up their booths and interface with runners at the Freihofer’s Health & Fitness Expo, which runs Thursday, Sept. 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 24 from noon to 7

For the third consecutive year, FOX will air the Runhappy Travers as the centerpiece of a 90-minute telecast beginning at 5 p.m. The networks of FOX and FOX Sports will air 7.5 total hours of live racing and analysis on Runhappy Travers Day, with coverage scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on FS1.

The Runhappy Travers is the centerpiece of a card featuring seven stakes and six Grade 1s, offering $4.6 million in total purse money. The Runhappy Travers is the oldest stakes race for 3-year-olds in the United States. The inaugural edition took place on Aug. 2, 1864, as the first race ever held at the presentday Saratoga Race Course and was named for track co-founder William R. Travers.

Intro to Ice Skating Build your skills! From your first steps on the ice through advanced moves, the Intro to Ice Skating Program will prepare you for more specialized forms of ice skating.

The program is for ages 3 and up. Early fall dates are Tuesdays starting Oct. 5 through Nov. 9 from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. Fall dates from Nov. 16 through Dec. 21 (no Nov. 27) are – choose one – Tuesdays from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. or Saturdays from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Intro to Ice Skating will be held at the Vernon and Weibel Ice Rinks (30 Weibel Avenue). You will need: snow or fleece pants; warm jacket; mittens or gloves; bike, ski, or hockey helmet (required for all). A responsible adult must accompany beginning skaters on the ice to assist with instruction. Adults do not need skates.

Skate Jam

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skate Jam returns to East Side Rec. as ON DECK Saratoga fundraises for a new skatepark.

On Friday, Aug. 27, Skate Jam returns to Saratoga Springs East Side Recreational Skatepark.

The event, starting at 4:30 p.m., will feature prizes and raffles from Seasons skate shop, Town and Country skate shop, and Death Wish Coffee, as well as food donated by Stewart’s Shops and a DJ set from Thomas Dragonette. Prizes will be given out to skaters for demos of the “worst trick” and the 30-andover “Senior Shred” event.

“It’s a fun activity to honor different types of skateboarding and skateboarding throughout the years,” said Belinda Colón, cofounder of ON DECK Saratoga.

ON DECK Saratoga was founded by Colón and her husband, skateboarder Benj Gleeksman as a not-for-profit organization that raises support for skateboarding and skateboarders of all ages in Saratoga

through community-based events. ON DECK has been working towards the goal of getting a modern, fully concrete skatepark installed at East Side Rec., and the City of Saratoga Springs has recently designated $265,000 for the skatepark construction. ON DECK is looking to raise a total of $350,000 to break ground on the project.

“The culture around skateboarding has changed over the last 20 years for the better,” said Gleeksman. “The skatepark is where kids go when they don’t do mainstream sports and don’t want to sit inside playing video games.

It is the only facility at East Side Rec. that is used year-round. They are out there digging it out of the snow in the winter, and that is a testament to how important it is.”

The Saratoga Springs East Side Recreation Skatepark (or Saratoga Springs Skatepark) is the oldest municipal skatepark in New York. It is an iconic spot in east coast skateboarding culture, and a handful of iconic pro skaters and artists grew up there.

Gleeksman could name three you probably will recognize:

Johnny Schilleref, the cofounder of Element Skateboards, skated at the park in the 80’s, and so did Josh Carter, half of the band Phantogram. Jeremy Fish skated and worked at the park, back when they had employees. Fish has become a famous artist living in San Francisco, and even has a day named after him – “Jeremy Fish Day” is Nov. 19 by the way.

ON DECK is always looking for new opportunities to promote the importance of skateboarding in Saratoga through community events, afterschool programs, or attending Gleeksman’s skate camp with the Rec. Department.
