Saratoga Builders Association Donates Proceeds of $70,000 From The 2023 Showcase Of Homes To Local Charities

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Builders Association presented proceeds totaling $70,000 from the 2023 Saratoga Showcase of Homes to Rebuilding Together Saratoga County and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. The Saratoga Builders Association announced that the total contribution to our local charities from this area’s premiere new home tour event is now over $1.5 million dollars. The 2023 edition of the Saratoga Showcase of Homes had 9 homes from 11 builders on tour this year - Belmonte Builders (2), DeGraff Bloom Custom Homes, DSG Construction & Remodeling, Kodiak Construction (2), R & M Homes, Whitbeck Construction, and Witt Construction. Congratulations to R & M Homes for winning the People’s Choice Award for Executive Home and Witt Construction for winning the People’s Choice Award for Luxury Home. This year’s event attracted over 2500 visitors to these beautiful new homes, which were on display over two weekends. In what has become an autumn tradition in our area, the Saratoga Builders Association is dedicated to this long running show being an integral part of the fabric in our fall season.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Janet T. Campbell died peacefully at her home on November 19, 2023 after a brief illness. At the family’s request there will be no services. Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com SARATOGA SPRINGS — Bonita Design, 81, earned her wings on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at home with her loved ones by her side, after a 7-year battle with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia. A lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs, Bonnie married her high school sweetheart, Patrick,
and they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage together. Together, they had two children and opened their home to raise four more children, including two nieces and one nephew. She showered each and every one of them with love, kindness, and faith. Bonnie’s passions were her family and adored children. She devoted her time and energy into making each one feel special, valued, and truly loved. Bonnie worked alongside her beloved husband at their family restaurant, Uncle Sams. Later she worked professionally in the Saratoga County Administrative Office, Saratoga Springs City Court, and the New York State Unified Court System. Upon retiring, she started her favorite position, as nanny to two small children.

Bonnie championed the underdogs, broken-hearted, and lost souls. Her calming mannerisms and open heart would be a balm to their souls. People were drawn to her ability to be non-judgmental and understanding. Her ability to listen intently and discern the true underlying issues gave her strength to help many onto better pathways of life. Her immense love of family, sense of humor, and infinite heart will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her mother Muriel Sutton, father William Sutton, motherin-law Columbia Design, and father-in-law Samuel Design. Bonnie is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Patrick, her two children Samuel (Jennifer) Design and Patricia (James) DesignDorey, three grandchildren,
whom she adored, Alex (Ashley) Design, Cody Design, and Ashley (Robert) Hannan, great-grandson Jackson, nieces Sandy (Howard) Pinsley, Gerianne (John) Hoffman, nephew Paul Batchelder, sisterin-law Columbia (Ed) Rudolph and her three siblings. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Bonnie may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Craig N. Ross, Jr., 46, of Ballston Spa, was arraigned on a nine-count indictment Nov. 17. The indictment charges Ross with felony kidnapping in the first-degree, felony assault in the second-degree, two felony counts of sexual abuse in the first-degree, four felony counts predatory sexual assault against a child, and endangering the welfare, of a child, a misdemeanor. Through his attorney, Ross entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment. Ross was sent to jail without bail and is scheduled to return to court Dec. 21. The charges are in connection with incidents alleged to have taken place in the towns of Moreau and Milton Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, following the disappearance of a 9-year-old girl who went missing Sept. 30 while on a bike ride in Moreau Lake State Park. An AMBER alert regarding the disappearance of the child was subsequently issued.

Emily Burke, 33, of Greenfield, pleaded Nov. 9 to felony criminal contempt, charged June 2023. Sentencing Jan. 9. William S. Davis, 42, of Fultonville, NY, was sentenced Nov. 9 to 1-1/3 to 4 years incarceration, after pleading to failure to register as a sex offender, charged April 2023 in Malta. Anthony J. SARATOGA COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT The
Sheriff ’s Office issued a statement on Nov. 19 reporting that deputies responded to a stabbing call on Myers Lane in Schuylerville at 5:31 p.m. on Nov. 17. “Investigation into the incident revealed that a verbal argument between two people known to one another resulted in one of them being stabbed
5 to his neck by the other,” according to the statement. “There is no danger to the public and the investigation is ongoing currently.” The victim, who was not named, was transported by EMS to Albany Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of serious injury.
NY STATE POLICE On Nov. 12, at about 9:25 p.m., State Police of Saratoga responded to the intersection of Galway Road and Middleline Road in Milton, for reports of a two-car crash. One of the
drivers was identified as Matthew G. Peck, 45, of Saratoga Springs. Peck was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. He was transported to SP Clifton Park for processing, where he recorded a 0.13% BAC. According to police, further investigation discovered Peck has had a previous DWI conviction in the last 10 years. He was issued tickets returnable to the Milton Town Court on Nov. 28, and released to a sober third party. No one was injured during the crash.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties hosts their 28th annual fundraiser – The Festival of Trees – from Wednesday, Nov. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Saratoga Springs City Center. The festival returns with a showcase of decorated trees, wreaths and other holiday and gift items for purchase. Tickets are $10 per person, $5 for Seniors, $5 for ages over 10 and free for anyone 10 and under, when accompanied by an adult. Special $5 admission pricing will be offered on Thursday the Victorian Streetwalk. Festival proceeds will benefit the programs of Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. Event hours are as follows: Festival of Trees Preview Reception, Wednesday, Nov. 29, 6-8 p.m.; Festival of Trees, Thursday, Nov. 30, 4-9 p.m.;
Friday, Dec. 1, 3-8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 2, 11 a.m. -7 p.m, and Sunday, Dec 3, 11 a.m. -2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance to the festival. SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation presents “Classic Bars of Yesterday” 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, with Carol Godette. This virtual program will highlight popular establishments D’Andrea’s, The Hub, and The Rafters. Step back in time to the 1970s and 1980s when the three iconic bars shaped Saratoga Springs’ nightlife and what made these locations so memorable. Carol Godette, a former schoolteacher and author, shares her memories of the places that brought people together not only for a drink, but also to connect, play games, and dance. This virtual program will take place on Zoom for a suggested donation of $10 or more. For additional information or to register for the virtual program,

BALLSTON SPA — The Village of Ballston Spa plays host to the annual Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 1 on Milton Avenue. A hometown-style tradition, this December favorite typically draws hundreds of spectators to Ballston Spa to watch the brightly decorated floats, fire trucks and community groups parading through the village. ALBANY — The 12th season of Santa’s Magical Express, which opens to the public Nov. 24, announced Yankee Trails. Those ready for holiday cheer will have an opportunity to help retrieve Santa’s hat from Jack Frost – and save Christmas! Along the way, children can write a letter to Santa, meet beloved characters like Frosty, Mrs. Claus, Ebenezer Scrooge, Sprinkle, Twinkle, & Santa’s Head Elf, Winky, with special appearances from Senator Schumer, Albany Mayor Sheehan, Lindsay Lohan, Darth Vader, and others.
Santa’s Magical Express runs through Dec. 23. SARATOGA SPRINGS — City Mayor-Elect John Safford announced this week he has selected Joanne Kiernan for the position of Deputy Mayor of Saratoga Springs. Kiernan, the Republicanendorsed candidate for Commissioner of Finance in 2021, has served as a business advisor and accountant for a variety of local businesses, and also served 9 years on the Saratoga Springs School Board.
Safford, running on the Republican Party line, secured the two-year term to begin Jan. 1, 2024 with 3,752 votes, besting incumbent Ron Kim (D, WF) – 3,172 votes, and independent party challenger Chris Mathiesen – 1,420 votes, according to Election Day tallies posted by the Saratoga County BOE. “I am proud to announce Joanne as my Deputy-Mayor,” Safford said, in a statement. “I am humbled by the interest shown by so many applicants interested in serving alongside me and thank them for their interest. Joanne is a proven

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) is partnering with Toys for Toga to help spread cheer to children in the local community this holiday season. Donations of new, unwrapped toys may be dropped off in the donation bin outside Woerner’s District Office at 112 Spring St. in Saratoga Springs. Toys will be collected through Dec. 10 and delivered to local families via: Captain Community Human Services, Franklin Community
Center and Mechanicville Area Community Servies Center. “Please consider donating items for older children as well,” Assemblywoman Woerner said, in a statement. “Games, puzzles, crafts, building sets and sports items are fun for all ages.” Toys for Toga is an annual toy collection spearheaded by DeCrescente Distributing Company and supported by a variety of local businesses, including Ball Manufacturing, Franklin Square Market and Quick Response Restoration.

Are Your Affairs in Order?
by David Rath, CMT, CFA for Saratoga TODAY My wife turned to me and said, “I wouldn’t know what to do if you died.” I had just gotten off the phone with my father who was simultaneously mourning the sudden loss of his brother and trying to sort out his finances. Talk about a wakeup call. As a financial professional, I’d like to think that I’m ahead of the game regarding this sort of stuff, but her comment made me realize I could do better. I handle the family finances and
as a result, had inadvertently left her in the dark as to what would happen in the worst sort of circumstances. Let’s examine a few simple things you can do to prepare your loved ones. The first financial question that arises when someone passes is “ok, what did they have going on?” Accounts, passwords, investments, debts, real estate, beneficiaries, the list goes on. This burden of data gathering will often fall to an executor named in your will. If there is no clear instruction or executor for an estate, the presiding court will determine a willing individual. Think about this for a second. If you suddenly leave this Earth, someone who you care about will have to deal with the emotional stress of losing you and the mental stress of getting your affairs in order. An organized list of financial accounts, updated annually, can greatly decrease this burden. Do you have an estate plan? According to a survey by Caring.com, 2/3 of adults in this
country do not currently have a will. I get it – it is not the most fun thing in the world to think about and it costs money, so it is easy to push to the back burner. The alternative is not great. Anything with a beneficiary designation like a life insurance policy is cut and dry – everything else is up for debate and probate courts and attorneys may spend a good amount of their time (and your money) to figure out who gets what. Speaking of beneficiary designations, are yours up to date? It is not a great look when an exhusband gets a life insurance payout after his former spouse has remarried. Again, an annual review of this is recommended. An alternate angle to approach this topic is one where you become incapacitated but
have not yet passed. A health care proxy allows someone you designate to make medical decisions for you. These decisions range from acceptable treatments to measures taken to sustain life. It is pretty heavy stuff so make sure the person you name is someone you trust and willing to accept that obligation. Related to the health care proxy is the idea of naming a power of attorney to take care of your financial affairs while you are incapacitated. A few difficult conversations and proper paperwork instituted before anything happens can save a lot of angst during a stressful period of time for all involved. Day in, day out, we see very little variation to our routine. Wake, coffee, school/ work, home, bed, rinse, repeat.
During this repetition, it is easy for our minds to become numb to the reality that everything can end in an instant. The Stoics have a helpful phrase to remind themselves of this stark reality: memento mori. Translation: remember that you will die. If that is jarring to think about, it’s because it is supposed to be. I have used this experience to better prepare my family for my absence. My hope is that you will use it as motivation as well. Saratoga Arms Celebrates 25 Years, Announces Discounts for Locals

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Arms Hotel celebrated its 25th year in business on Thursday night with a lavish party replete with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. At the event, General Manager Rachel Boggan unveiled a new marketing strategy designed to attract local residents. “As a thank you to the community that has really made Saratoga such an amazing small city,” Boggan said, “we are launching a locals rate starting
in January of 2024.” The rate will apply to anyone who lives within 50 miles of downtown Saratoga. It’s available during the off-season and on select dates during the busy season. Bookings at this discounted rate will open next week. Boggan announced that breakfast will soon be open to local reservations on select days. Some of the hotel’s signature morning dishes include cinnamon breakfast bread, lemon ricotta pancakes, and homemade buttermilk biscuits. A breakfast speaker series that will feature community leaders
is also in the works. “We’re thrilled to start our next 25 years with a focus on our community, and allowing our hotel guests to experience that community in the most immersive way possible,” Boggan said. The building that houses the hotel was originally built in 1870 by Gideon Putnam’s grandson Loren. In February of 1999, it reopened as the Saratoga Arms after extensive renovations. Last month, the Saratoga Arms was ranked one of the best hotels in the Mid-Atlantic in the 2023 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

Adopt a Grandparent Campaign Will Give Christmas Presents to Seniors by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS — One down, just 349 to go. On Friday, a gift tag order was placed on the Impressions of Saratoga online store by someone in Staten Island. Word of the new “Adopt a Grandparent” campaign had apparently already reached the Big Apple. The owners of Impressions of Saratoga and The Dark Horse Mercantile have launched a holiday gift-giving initiative for seniors. The “Adopt a Grandparent” campaign officially begins on November 24 and ends December 17. During that time, $20 gift tags can be purchased. Buyers can write their own personalized notes on the tags. Then those tags will be hung on trees at the two stores. Come December 18, store co-owners Maddy Zanetti and Marianne Barker will use the proceeds from the tags to buy gifts for the residents of the Wesley Community’s Health Care Center. The hope is that 350 gift tags will be purchased, thus allowing Zanetti and Barker to give one gift to every Wesley resident. “We can talk to the Wesley Community and see what the

residents might actually use,” Zanetti said. The goal is to buy the seniors gifts that are both practical and will “make them all feel special during the holiday season,” according to Zanetti. For Zanetti, Wesley has special significance in her life. “My great-grandmother lived there when I was little,” she said, “and my grandmother just recently passed away and she was there.” The Wesley Community “empowers seniors to live independently with choices, confidence, and peace of mind” in the heart of Saratoga Springs,
according to a company brochure. Zanetti said that she and co-owner Barker’s families were fortunate because they could go visit their elders during the holidays. “But sometimes people don’t have a local family member,” she said. SARATOGA TEACHERS MARCH FOR NEW CONTRACT by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dozens of people huddled together in the frigid darkness. With glow sticks and cell phones to light the way, they marched towards downtown Saratoga. Thus began a dramatic and emotional night for Saratoga Springs City School District teachers and their supporters. The march began and ended at the Caroline Street Elementary School, where a Board of Education (BOE) meeting occurred on Thursday, November 9. The demonstration was in support of the teachers’ union, which
has been negotiating a new contract with the district for two years. During the board meeting, teachers criticized the current state of their schools. “In all my years here, morale is at an all-time low,” said Robin Chudy. “I see a huge change. I see good, young teachers leaving this district; good teachers looking for jobs in different districts that pay more, and I can’t blame them.” John Mishoe, a 2005 graduate of the district, spoke of teachers experiencing “nights of tears, searching for new careers, and early retirement.” “I implore the board to take action in securing and
maintaining teachers,” said Katie Cole. “It’s what our current and future students deserve.” At a previous BOE meeting on October 12, teacher Melissa Deutsch said she has not received a “true raise” in over eight years. “Each contract that provides more salary also increases our healthcare contributions, wiping out any significant increase in take-home pay,” she said. At both BOE meetings, teachers said that the district was struggling to hire and retain employees. In a statement to Saratoga TODAY, Saratoga School District’s Director of Community Outreach and Communications Maura Manny said that “teacher

retention and recruitment are ongoing priorities for our district, and we continuously strive to create an environment that attracts and retains professionals who are dedicated to the success of our students.” “Like many school districts across the nation,” Manny said, “the nationwide teacher shortage makes teacher recruitment and
retention more challenging each year. Despite these challenges, our district has been fortunate to consistently attract a talented pool of applicants for our open positions.” According to a November 2021 report from the U.S. Department of Education, New York State “has faced geographically widespread and persistent teacher shortages.”
LITTLE LIBRARIES CONTEND WITH VANDALISM by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two little libraries were vandalized last month in Saratoga Springs. The public boxes contain banned books that can be borrowed and returned for free. One box, located near Caffe Lena on Phila Street, is stewarded by Nancy Weber. When she found the library vandalized, she said she “kind of did a double-take because it was so shocking.” Weber discovered that dozens of books had
been taken from the library. Only one remained: “The Hate U Give,” a novel about race relations in the wake of a police shooting. “We knew that it was just a matter of time before something like this would happen,” Weber said. “We’re living in very volatile, polarized times.” The identity of the vandal or vandals is unknown. “It could’ve been a prank, or it could’ve been someone intentionally doing it,” Weber said. Weber said that no further vandalism has occurred since
the initial incident, but there was one odd book exchange. “Curiously, one book came back: The Bible,” Weber said. “A few days ago, that copy of the Bible left and another copy of the Bible came in, which I thought was sort of pointless.” Weber said that since the vandalization occurred, there’s been an increase in book donations to the library. But many of the donated books are not actually considered banned books. Donated books should be included on the American
Library Association’s list of banned and challenged books, or the PEN America Index of School Book Bans. The second vandalized little library of banned books is stewarded by Julie Holmberg. She said that one of the congregants at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Saratoga found the library’s contents under a nearby bush. “There had been a rainstorm, and all of the books were destroyed,” Holmberg said. “They were all hidden away underneath there and had to be trashed.”
“It’s very frustrating that people would destroy property like that, especially books,” she said. “It just feels like right now things are so discouraging.” Unlike Weber, Holmberg has not received a significant increase in book donations since the vandalization occurred, leaving the little library with an uncertain future. “I just encourage people to open their minds, read things. If you don’t agree with it, that’s fine. But keep the conversation going so that we can figure out a way to live together,” Weber said.

According to the school, the students “exemplify citizenship, leadership, and character development through community service and academic excellence.”
SCHUYLERVILLE — Schuylerville High School has had a robust agriculture program for decades. But now, after an 18-month process, the CTE (career and technical education) program has been approved by the state. “Going through this certification process was almost seamless because of the high quality of the program currently,” said Sarah Battiste, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development. “The CTE endorsement that we have now allows our students to use that as a pathway to graduation,” said Principal James Ducharme. “If students go through this pathway, take these courses, these four courses prescribed over this timeline, that is the equivalent of them going to the Meyers Center and completing a CTEcertified program over there.
We now have our own program in agriculture.” “We’ve intensified our offerings, we’ve intensified our rigor in the classes,” said Mary Elizabeth Foote, an Agricultural Education teacher. “We really solidified that we are meeting state and national standards, and that our students are really pursuing a speciality here in-house.” The program provides a diverse array of classes, according to Agricultural Education teacher Carlyn Miller. These classes range from business to plants to animals to food science. “We cover just about all of it at this point,” she said. “The diversity in the classes that our kids have the opportunity to take, you would not expect from a small school like us,” said Principal Ducharme. As part of the program, students get a taste of what a career in agriculture might be like. One initiative allows students to take sap from maple trees and turn it into maple products such as
syrup, candy, and cream. During this process, students learn about the maple industry, as well as the importance of conservation. While some graduates do immediately enter the workforce, most pursue higher education. Recent Schuylerville grads have continued their agricultural studies at institutions such as Cornell University, SUNY Cobleskill, and Delaware Valley University. Schuylerville’s agriculture program is open to all students, and according to Foote, an estimated 65% of them are enrolled in at least one agricultural class. “This is not a gender-specific study area,” Miller said. “There’s not a mold of what anyone in agriculture could look like,” said Foote. “It’s just someone who has an interest that develops into a passion, and then the rest is going to be history from there.” For more details on the program, visit www. schuylervilleschools.org.

• 3 cups frozen sweet corn
• 1 large sweet onion*
• Leftover mashed potatoes
• 1/4 cup ketchup
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brown the ground veal with the diced onion. Once cooked through and the onions are translucent, add the ketchup. Put the mixture in the bottom of your desired baking dish. Top that with the frozen corn (you can add more or use less, depending on your preference). Spread that out evenly over the meat. Hello my Foodie Friends ! by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAY I tell my Thanksgiving story every year because it is one that we reflect on and smile. This year is especially difficult in that Paula and I lost her mother this past year. I told this story (in classic Irish style) at her funeral among many other heart warming and funny stories. Marie always made me laugh. Thanksgiving would not be complete without my real-life story of Grandma and the Turkey. It was 1993 when our children; Johnny age 2 and Aubrey 5 months old at the time, would make the annual trek with Paula and I to Grandma and Grandpa’s house to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and watch football. To begin; let me explain I am a Giants fan and so is my mother-in-law. Therefore, watching the Cowboys is not one of our favorite things to do. However, her son is and so is my sister-in-laws husband. Yep, two Cowboy fans in the same house and they do not like each other! I love football so I watched but the room was silent because the two brother-in-laws do not speak to each other. They were holding their feelings down to make my mother-in-law happy. As the game was being watched, my mother-in-law was busy making a huge feast for all to enjoy. She was very nervous because she wanted everyone to get along. We always ate after the game and this particular game one was a tight one. Most Cowboy fans may want to stop reading now. With just seconds left in the game, the Miami Dolphins lined up to make a game winning field goal and it was blocked by the Cowboys. The brothers-in-laws were silent. I wanted to groan with disappointment, but held back because of the tension. All of a sudden one of the Cowboys
It is amazing to think that the holiday season is here. Planning for family gatherings and meals can be a stressful time during this time of year. We strive for the Norman Rockwell experience of perfect times, perfect food and respectful conversation. Reality is for many people, family gatherings during the holidays are rarely stress-free.
(Leon Lett) chased the block field goal and touched it. “Oh nooo!” Well, the Dolphins got another chance to kick the field goal and won. Half of the house wanted to celebrate but my motherin-law and I remained solemn. It has been called the greatest Thanksgiving Game ever played. As the game ended, my motherin-law continued working with my Paula to complete the many dishes all cooking at once. There was a shout from the kitchen and Grandma announced that she had lost her glasses and could not see without them. Immediately, each of the brothers-in-laws was pressed into service to find the glasses. These were not just any glasses; they were big and black and hard to lose but there were no glasses to be found. We looked everywhere. Grandma was close to tears when she asked me to check on and baste the turkey. This was a big turkey at 28lbs and it smelled great. I grabbed my son Johnny and the baster, which he took charge of, and opened the oven to show him the turkey. He said “look Daddy, the turkey can see better”. Yep, he found the glasses neatly melted
in perfect harmony with the bird so it looked like he had eyes! I started laughing and everyone joined in. Needless to say we had ham and lasagna but no turkey. It didn’t matter because the rest of the day was perfect. Through the fun and sometimes stressful events that can happen during the holidays – especially when we want it to be perfect; it can turn out to be a wonderful family gathering. Among our greatest and most treasured memories are the ones that are based in the kitchen or around a meal. • 1 loaf country-style French bread with crust cut into 1-inch cubes (roughly 8 cups)
• 2 tablespoon chopped fresh sage
• 10 tablespoons butter
• 2 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
• 2 shallots, finely sliced
• 3 large garlic cloves, minced
• 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
• 2 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
• 2 bunches green onions, thinly sliced
• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• ¾ cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
• 3 large eggs
• 2 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
• 4 ounces coarsely grated Parmesan cheese
• 2 cups chicken broth
INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 375°F. Spread bread on large rimmed baking sheet. Bake until bread is dry, about 15 minutes. Cool. Melt 10 tablespoons butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add shallot and celery and saute for 5-6 minutes. Add green onions, all the herbs, garlic, salt and pepper and sauté until celery is tender, 6 to 8 minutes more. Preheat oven to 375°F. Generously grease a large skillet or baking dish. Place bread cubes in very large bowl. Add warm vegetable mixture; toss to combine. Whisk eggs and ¾ cup broth in medium bowl. Add egg mixture to stuffing and toss to coat. Mix in Parmesan. Add more broth (about ½ to ¾ cup) to stuffing if dry. Transfer to skillet or baking dish. Cover with buttered foil. Bake 30 minutes. Special Matinee Judy Collins, Holiday Favorite “It’s a Jazzy Christmas” Kick-Off Show Features Songs from The Great Holiday Season at UPH American Songbook
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Universal Preservation Hall is ringing in the season with several holiday-themed shows coming to Saratoga Springs. Fiddle virtuosos Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy and the MacMaster-Leahy kids take to the stage for “A Celtic Family Christmas,” sharing their favorite holiday music and traditions with audiences at UPH 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1. Nacre Dance Group will be performing Charles Weidman’s “Christmas Oratorio” for two performances, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10. For both performances, there will be a holiday tea optional add-on with treats provided by Chocolate is Self-Care and a demonstration an hour before the performance. After the performance, the audience is invited to decorate our dance tree with a holiday message and meet the costumed cast members for a photo opportunity. Weidman’s masterful choreography combined with Bach’s passionate music makes this a moving and unforgettable experience for dancers and audiences.

“It’s a Jazzy Christmas” is returning to the Great Hall 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15. Wrapped in the theme of a radio drama, the ensemble takes the audience on a holiday ride through decades of great classic music and fun radio serial interludes featuring the music of Vince Guaraldi from the Peanuts holiday specials and many other seasonal favorites. Singer-songwriter Judy Collins is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of
traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. She’s garnered several top-ten hits and goldand platinum-selling albums. Accuracy in word choice is a key to effective communication. In your daily writing and speaking, try to make sure you use the right word in the right place with the right spelling. By doing so, its effect will affect your communication in a positive way. This quick weekly tip will help you filter the confusion in some of our daily word choices. WILTON — A devastating blaze in Wilton derailed the lives of Skidmore men’s basketball coach Joe Burke and his family. Although no one was hurt, much of the family’s home was destroyed.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Central Catholic boys basketball team is coming off a winning season in a competitive league. According to Coach Shea Bromirski, every game this year will be a rivalry and a challenge. “I think it’s the best small school basketball league in the state,” Bromirski said, “and if it’s not the best, it’s in the top three.” Last season was Bromirski’s first as coach of the Saints, and his goal was to have his team “understand me and what I’m
about and ultimately what our program was going to be about, like a culture change.” The Saints finished 12-8 in the regular season and were the third seed in the Class C sectionals. “We tasted some success,” Bromirski said. “I felt like last year we kind of created a little buzz around here because we played really hard and we play a fun style of basketball.” This season, the roster is bolstered by a handful of new transfer students, as well as five returning players. “We have a really deep team,” Bromirski said. Returning players include senior Aiden Crowther, and
juniors Ryan Gillis, Hunter Fales, Tyler Weygand, and Ronan Rowe. “This year, I just think that this is gonna be a spot to come and watch a really high level basketball team play every Tuesday and Friday night,” the coach said. “This team is going to be very fun to watch and really play basketball the way I think it’s supposed to be played.” The season kicks off on Friday, November 24 at 7:30pm against Galway at home. SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs High School cross-country program has added more championships to its record books. At the NYSPHSAA Class
A championships on November 11, the girls’ team captured the team title for the fifth straight year, and senior Emily Bush won the Section 2 girls’ individual title. Alycia Hart finished fourth overall, and Anya Belisle came in seventh. A week later, the girls won
the Federation Cross Country Championships. Bush led the Blue Streaks, followed again by Hart and Belisle. The boys’ team won the Class A championship in a tiebreaker, marking their first team title since 2012. Thomas Isenovski led the boys Blue Streaks, finishing 17th.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore’s hockey team entered this past weekend with a pair of games against Norwich and New England. At 5-0, Skidmore was having its best start in decades. But historically, the Thoroughbreds have struggled to beat Norwich at home. Three out of the last four contests between the teams played in Saratoga ended in ties. So the question was, could Skidmore keep its undefeated streak alive? It turned out that history

would repeat itself as the contest against Norwich ended in a tie, leaving Skidmore still undefeated but a tad imperfect. “[Norwich] play a very defensive brand of hockey,” said Skidmore coach Rob Hutchison. “It came down to finding a way to put a puck in the net in a meaningful moment and we weren’t able to do that, but we had our opportunities.” The following night, however, the Thoroughbreds beat New England 2-0. Goalie Tate Brandon finished with another shutout, while Everett Wardle and Kevin Urquhart put Skidmore’s
two points on the board. Coach Rob Hutchison credits his squad’s early success this season with player experience and preparation. “We’ve got experience like we’ve never had,” Hutchison said. The team’s core group of juniors and seniors have played a lot of games together, including championship bouts. “They’ve been able to have those experiences and grow from those experiences,” Hutchison said. The Thoroughbreds are now 6-0-1 on the year. The team will next compete in the Thanksgiving Invitational this weekend.
