SARATOGA

Week of December 1 – December 7, 2023

Rebecca “Obstinate Becky” Jones by David Fiske | Sponsored by The Saratoga County History Roundtable Contact The Saratoga County History Roundtable at: saratogacohistoryroundtable@gmail.com Rebecca Jones was born in Schoharie County in the 1820s. Her family moved to Ballston Spa, where Becky attended a girl’s school. By 1850, she was in New York City, working as a domestic for the family of Andrew Gordon Hammersley, a lawyer and banker. She was with them for several decades. A newspaper later noted that she was treated well by the family and was one of those servants who “stand more on the footing of companions and friends than ordinary domestics.” One day, after Hamersley had become ill, he explained to her that following his death there would likely be contention over his estate and requested that she never share her knowledge of family matters with anyone. “You will suffer if you do not [speak], Becky,” he warned her. Her answer was: “What of that, sir? I will keep my promise.” After his death in 1883 – followed shortly by that of his son, Louis – a court case was commenced, challenging the will. This dragged on for quite some time. Becky had moved back to Ballston Spa, but her testimony was sought in the court proceedings. She resisted testifying, per Hammersley’s wishes. One time she even jumped from a train to avoid going to New York City to appear at the trial. Finally, she was forced to go, but in court, she steadfastly refused to answer questions about the Hammersleys. Rather than testify, she said she’d go to jail and stay till “the resurrection day.” The judge found her in contempt of court and sent her to the Ludlow Street jail to induce her testimony. At the jail, her walls were adorned with photos of members of the family she’d faithfully served. Visitors and newspaper reporters frequently came to see her. When she first arrived, she was unimpressed with her “lodgings,” but the warden had some furniture moved in which made it homier. She told a reporter she was happier in jail than if she were out, because all her people were dead (which was not really true, as she had a sister and brother-in-law back

in Ballston Spa). Her daily routine included an early morning walk in the prison yard, going to meals, and working on a narrative of her experiences. Also, “I read and sew and go to meeting and now and then have a good talk with the people upstairs... and everybody treats me well and I am perfectly happy.” She invited one reporter to call again, on soup day, because she found the soup to be “delicious.” With national interest in her situation, stories appeared in newspapers all over the country. Intrigued reporters nicknamed her “Silent Becky” and “Obstinate Becky.” They were so impressed with her fidelity to her former employer that they even had portraits of her painted. On hearing she’d be released from jail, she seemed hesitant to leave: “If I’ve got my discharge and it’s legal...I may go out.” Becky was afraid she’d have to run through the streets because people would point her out as having been in jail. She was worried about returning to Ballston Spa, as “people for miles around would come into town to look at me.” She anticipated getting a job with another family, and “if my employers die, you may be sure I’ll never breathe their family affairs.” When released in the spring of 1885, after about a year of incarceration, she did come back to Ballston Spa. The 1900 Census shows her living there with her brother-in-law, Return J. Burnham (who sometimes went by R. Jay). A newspaper observed that she lived a quiet life, but “she is one of the objects of interest in the village and takes great pride in her course when she spent some weeks in jail...for refusing to answer questions.” She had a collection of news clippings and photographs from the time of the trial. As noted, Mr. Hammersley’s son Louis died not long after his father. His widow, the former Lilly Warren Price, was originally from Troy, and she became the Duchess of Marlborough when she remarried to the Duke, George Churchill (whose

nephew, Winston, would become famous). The Duchess inherited the Hammersley fortune once everything was settled by the courts. In the 1890s, the Duke and Duchess visited Becky in Ballston Spa, and offered her a job, which she declined. She was in comfortable circumstances because Mr. Hamersley had granted her an annual stipend of $1,500. In the village, she had repairs made to the West High Street house that had been her father’s, arranged for cemetery monuments for family members, and made provisions for her own burial. Her name was still well remembered by the public, though, as her portrait appeared in ads promoting Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine. Her testimonial for that product stated that when released from jail, she was a nervous wreck. “For ten years, life was a burden.” But after using the tonic, she was “entirely well.” Jones died in 1905 at her home. She had given instructions that her funeral would be open only to family, and that her remains were to be placed in a “plain oak casket…with white lining... with a plate engraved ‘Obstinate Becky Jones.’” She is buried in the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery. Ironically, following her death, there was a court case involving her estate. But Becky said nothing about it! State Sends Saratoga County $426K for Operation of Code Blue Shelter by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

BALLSTON SPA — During its monthly meeting, held Nov. 21 at the county complex in Ballston Spa, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors accepted $426,000 from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and approved an agreement with Shelters of Saratoga that will see those funds used for S.O.S. expenses to operate this winter’s Code Blue shelter in Saratoga Springs. The emergency coldweather Code Blue shelter will this year, for the first time, be located at the former Grand Union Motel at 120 South Broadway, in Saratoga Springs.

Motivated to action in the wake of the death of a city woman exposed to a winter’s elements on a December night in 2013, a temporary homeless emergency shelter was launched in Saratoga Springs that Christmas Eve at St. Peter’s Parish Center. The Code Blue shelter has found temporary homes across the city in the years since during wintertime. Of the $426,000 the State is sending to Saratoga County, the Board of Supervisors recommended up to $399,979 be spent in contract with S.O.S. for expenses associated with sheltering the homeless during this fall and winter season, and that any additional costs up to $26,021 may be used by the Department of Social Services

for potential costs incurred for sheltering individuals or families not otherwise eligible for emergency housing and not able to be housed at the Code Blue Shelter. 2024 County Budget Proposal Tops $400 Million; Public Hearing Dec. 6, Plan to Adopt Dec. 13 A public hearing on the revised tentative 2024 Saratoga County Budget will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, at the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chambers, 40 McMaster St., Ballston Spa. to begin in mid-January and Yaiser is eyeing the Saratoga Springs recreation facility on Vanderbilt Avenue as the program staging ground where a flexible schedule of events are expected to be held weekday nights and Sundays. The pre-holiday season is an appropriate time to be thinking about some physical activity in the immediate post-holiday, Yaiser says. “You go at your own pace, and it will give you a little cardio without killing you,” he says with a laugh. “Also, a portion of the proceeds will go to fund programs for disabled community members,” says Yaiser, who as founder of Second Chance Sports has helped coordinate events and fitness therapy

City Supervisors Secure $50K for Woodlawn Parking Lot, $25K for Saratoga Pride by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

BALLSTON SPA — The Saratoga County Law & Finance Committee approved the distribution of $50,000 to the city of Saratoga Springs for the reconfiguration of the Woodlawn Avenue Parking Lot and Garage entrance on Connolly Way, and the distribution of $25,000 to Saratoga PRIDE is in support of the Rainbow Garden Club. Law and Finance Committee approval is required for a partial distribution of funds for projects identified by the Supervisors of Saratoga Springs. The motion was made by Saratoga Springs County Supervisor and Law & Finance Committee member

Matt Veitch. Law & Finance Committee member and Wilton Town Supervisor John Lant cast the lone vote against. “Regarding the Saratoga County Discretionary Funds disbursement that Supervisor Veitch and myself have, we will be donating $25,000 to Saratoga PRIDE specifically for the purpose of queer-use programming offered in Saratoga Springs,” city Supervisor Tara Gaston said. “They partner currently with the Saratoga YMCA and Pitney Farms as well as the Unitarian Universalist Church and Create Studios – all in Saratoga Springs. This will allow them to broaden and to provide additional programming for our youth that fall under the queer umbrella in the city.”

clinics across the state for several decades, as well as teaching sports to the mentally and physically disabled. Each clinic session can host about a dozen people. Activities will help with hand-eye coordination and balance, and the physical activity involved is something anyone can do, regardless of age or physical condition, Yaiser says. For more information about sign-ups and clinic times call or text Yaiser 518-226-5888. Everyone who signs up will receive a special Saratoga present that can’t be purchased anywhere else, Yaiser said.

The Learning League and the Health Club without Walls plan to kick off their “no excuses” clinic in January.

New Saratoga Springs Fire Station: Opening Likely Pushed to January 2024 by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A ceremonial groundbreaking was staged in August 2022 atop the lands where the city’s longawaited fire station no. 3 would be built. Thirteen months later, an unexpected ground-breaking of sorts was discovered that will push the official opening of the Henning Road fire station into the new year. “We have some good news, and we have some bad news,” Public Safety Commissioner Jim Montagnino said, regarding the status of Fire Station No. 3.

“The good news is the training facility portion of Fire Station 3 is being used, even as we speak,” Montagnino said. A simulated Ladder Rescue component built into the apparatus bays provides a training area for firefighters, allowing them to train in the city and readily available to respond to any calls. The bad news - “a minor hiccup that’s being taken care of,” the commissioner said, involves cracks in the concrete pads that lead to the apparatus bays in both the front and back of the station building that need to be remedied. Concrete in the ‘aprons’

leading to the apparatus bays was poured in May 2023. Cracks were discovered in September and tests conducted one month later. “It was determined they are not surface cracks, but rather go all the way through the eight inches of concrete that form the apron,” Montagnino said. There are “several competing theories” regarding what may have caused the slabs to fail that

include everything from waterproofing issues to the depth of the reinforcement bars. The city’s two currently existing stations are located in the downtown district, and on the west side. The development of a third station followed a generation’s worth of false starts, hard stops, floated land-swaps and a lawsuit. The Henning Road fire station will improve emergency response to the eastern plateau

in Saratoga Springs specifically, as well as provide added coverage for the city in general. Contractors are slated to begin remedying the situation this week, at no cost to the city, with work estimated to be completed in mid-December. That will be followed by a curing period of approximately four weeks before a heavy load may be imposed, effectively pushing the timeline of completion to January.

CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERS CHANGING OUTDOOR DINING RULES by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs City Council is considering changing the Spa City’s outdoor dining rules. A proposed amendment from Accounts Commissioner Dillon Moran would allow businesses to operate seasonal sidewalk cafes similar to the temporary outdoor dining facilities made available during the COVID-19 pandemic. The revised ordinance put forward defines a sidewalk cafe as “any service of food and/ or drink operated, in whole or in part, on a sidewalk or other public property of the City of Saratoga Springs.” The cafes would have to stop serving alcohol at 2am, and remove all patrons by 2:30am. Any music would have to end at midnight. The cafes would be allowed to operate from April 1 until

November 1. The proposal would amend several articles of Chapter 136 of the City Code. Commissioner Moran previously tried to extend the COVID-era outdoor dining rules until November 2024. At a city council meeting on November 21, Saratoga resident Sam Brewer said he supported allowing outdoor dining year-round, but was concerned about sidewalk access and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The council plans to vote on amending the outdoor dining rules at a later, unspecified date. Former Accounts Commissioner John Franck spearheaded the initial creation of outdoor dining rules designed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions in 2020. Businesses were allowed to expand outdoor seating onto sidewalks, provided that an ADA-compliant 48 inches of pedestrian walkway was maintained.

AMC Signage Debated By Zoning Board by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

SARATOGA SPRINGS — AMC took over the Bow Tie Cinemas at 19 Railroad Pl in April 2022. 18 months later, the movie theater chain is still hashing out the details of its new signage with the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals. AMC changed its initial proposal to make its red lighted signs on the exterior of the building smaller and darker. One Zoning Board member debated the necessity of a sign on the back of the building, while board member Brendan Dailey said he was “just having a hard time really caring about any of the signs.” Ron Levesque, AMC’s representative at the Zoning Board meeting, argued that a lack of signage on the back of the building would cause drivers to miss the theater, potentially causing safety issues. The theater’s previous owner, Bow Tie Cinemas, already had a sign in the same location.

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1¼ cups granulated sugar

• 1 cup raw, skin-on almonds (or ¾ cup almond flour)

• 2 large eggs*

• 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

• 1 cup/290 grams raspberry jam* (or jam of your choice, many options are available at the farmers’ market)

• 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1½ cups unsalted butter (3 sticks)

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Powdered sugar for dusting

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Pulse together flour and almonds in a food processor until the almonds are very finely ground. Add cinnamon, baking powder and salt, and pulse to blend. (Alternatively, whisk together flour, ground almonds or almond flour, cinnamon, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.) 2. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar together on medium-high until the mixture is light, fluffy and pale, 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add in eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla extract, and beat until everything is well combined, again stopping to scrape down the bowl as necessary. 3. Add in dry ingredients all at once and mix on low speed, just until incorporated. 4. Divide dough in 2 equal pieces, and wrap each piece in cling film, patting into a 1-inch-thick disk. Chill at least 2 hours, up to 5 days ahead. 5. Heat oven to 325 degrees. Working with 1 disk at a time, roll out the dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper so it’s about ⅛ inch thick. (Because of the almonds, the dough may crack in places while you’re rolling it out. This is O.K., just patch it up with scraps.) 6. Using a round cookie cutter 2½ inches in diameter, cut out as many circles as possible. Take half of these circles and cut out a 1-inch circle from the interior of the larger circles, creating a doughnut shape that will become the top of the cookie. If the dough becomes too soft to cut and cleanly remove from parchment paper, slide it onto a cookie sheet and chill in the freezer or refrigerator for a few minutes. Gather any dough scraps, combine them and roll them out, chilling as necessary. Transfer dough circles to a parchment-lined baking sheet spaced 1 inch apart and bake until the edges are golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. 7. To assemble the Linzer cookies, spread about a teaspoon of raspberry jam onto the flat sides of the larger circles. Dust the tops of the cutout circles with powdered sugar and place on top of the raspberry jam. Adapted from the recipe by Alison Roman, featured in New York Times Cooking

Holidays

by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAY This time of year brings many family reunions, friendship gatherings, and special events that include great food and fun times. The holiday season is celebrated in myriad ways around the world. Every family has their own traditions that are rooted in cultural customs that go back for many generations. However, there is one similarity with these traditions that spans across the globe – food. Different cultures celebrate their holidays in different ways, but cooking and enjoying special foods and drinks is a tradition that transcends throughout the world and all religions. Paella is one of our family’s favorite dishes and is the iconic rice dish of Spain. Cooked with care, but not requiring the fussy attention of a risotto, it’s the perfect way to cap off a happy holiday celebration. The dish has the further advantage of customization and built-in appropriateness for a couple of different special diets -- it naturally has no gluten and no dairy. Vegetarians may forgo the typical use of Spanish sausage and chicken, using a vegetable stock to cook the rice. Those that love seafood can find plenty to love going all seafood with a seafood stock to complement the required rice, saffron, tomatoes and olive oil. Paella is a perfect party dish because it’s a one-pot meal, and because it feeds any size group. Paella is a rice dish from Spain that has become very popular and is known around the world. It originated in the fields of a region called Valencia in eastern Spain. Paella is meant to show off the rice itself and to highlight a few special ingredients. These can be vegetables, fish, shellfish or meat including sausage in

Spanish Paella with Seafood

INGREDIENTS

• 6 total chicken parts, 3 each thigh and drums

• 4 ounces prepared squid

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 2 cups bomba rice, or short grain

• 2 peeled and small diced small yellow onions • 1 seeded and small diced red bell pepper

• 2 teaspoons paprika • pinch saffron threads • 4 cups chicken stock • 12 fresh mussels

• 3 finely minced cloves of garlic

• 6 fresh clams

• 2 cored medium diced fresh tomatoes or can of chopped tomatoes

• 6 extra-large shrimp, • ½ cup peas • sea salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS Season the chicken well on both sides with salt and pepper. Set aside.

seafood paella and you may also find chicken in it. Do not forget the saffron -- it is the essential spice of the dish. Whatever paella you make, it should use short- or mediumgrain rice, which should be cooked uncovered in a flavorful stock. Spanish Bomba rice is the best to use. It’s fun to make paella over a grill or on the stove. However, it is important that you have the right pan for this dish; the Paella Pan! The Paella pan should be shallow and have sloping sides, which helps the rice cook evenly and develops more intense flavor. As the pans get larger, they grow in diameter rather than depth, which allows for more delicious socarrat. And like all authentic paella pans, they do not have matching lids (since paella is traditionally cooked in an open pan). We sell the traditional carbon steel pans and some stainless steel pans. Either will work well for you. A good pan has dimples on the bottom to serve several functions. They trap small amounts of liquid and thus promote even cooking, they make the pan rigid, and they prevent warping. Now what the heck is socarrat?

When you make paella, socarrat is the caramelized bottom layer of rice that sometimes forms on the pan. Many people consider the socarrat the prized part of the paella. Also, there is speculation that socarrat has aphrodisiac powers, and that it is what fuels the passion of those renowned Spanish lovers. I myself am Irish, French and Italian so the passion is taken care of by the French and Italian parts. But I might like a little Antonio Banderas side of me to crop up from time to time! How about: tu es muy bonita Paula? If you are not sure what dish to serve for your holiday meal; consider Paella. At Compliments to the Chef, your neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery Store located at 33 Railroad Place. We sell Paella pans and other cooking tools to help you with your holiday creations. Create your holiday traditions. It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas! Stop by for the holiday supplies you need to eat, drink and be merry with family and friends. Remember my Foodie Friends: “Life Happens in the Kitchen.”

Take Care, John & Paula

Add the oil to a large 13-inch paella pan over medium to mediumhigh heat and add the seasoned chicken and cook for 6-8 minutes per side or until browned and most of the way cooked. Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside. Add the onions to the pan and caramelize over low to medium heat for 10 minutes or until well browned. Stir in the peppers and garlic and continue to cook and stir for 8-10 minutes or until the peppers are tender and roasted. Add the tomatoes and cook for about 8-10 minutes or until the tomatoes are broken down. Stir in the rice and saffron and cook for 3-4 minutes. Next, add in the stock and season very well with salt and pepper and mix everything together until combined. Add back in the cooked chicken along with the mussels, clams, shrimp, and peas spread evenly throughout the pan. Cook over low to medium heat for 20 minutes or until most of the stock is gone and barely bubbling on the top. Then, cover the pan and cook over low heat for 15 minutes. Garnish with optional chopped fresh parsley or cilantro. Recipe courtesy of Chef Billy Parisi at billyparisi.com

International A Cappella Jazz Sextet ACCENT Indie Lens Pop-Up Series to Stage Show at Caffe Lena Dec. 10 Begins Screening This Week ALBANY — WMHT Public Media (WMHT), a multichannel public communications organization serving Eastern New York and Western New England, today announced a partnership with the Albany Public Library (APL) to present sneak previews of a national documentary series, a collaboration designed to advance education and spur community conversations regarding timely and topical issues impacting our region and nation. Hosted at APL’s Pine Hills Branch at 517 Western Ave. in Albany, each of five short screenings will feature documentary projects included in the new season of Indie Lens Pop-Up, a long-running series that is part of INDEPENDENT LENS, PBS’s award-winning documentary anthology series. A range of topics will be explored, from the Muslim American experience, climate gentrification, and race and gender equity in mainstream media, to personal perspectives on what it means to live with Parkinson’s disease, and how the Deaf and hard of hearing community redefine listening. Free and open to the public, each screening will be accompanied by a moderated discussion featuring panelists engaged by WMHT in partnership with student organizations at area colleges, who will also help to plan the programs. In addition, APL is preparing book displays and recommended reading and viewing

lists from their holdings to provide further insight on the topics. The Indie Lens Pop-Up series of screenings begins Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. with “A Town Called Victoria,” by Li Lu and Anthony Pedone. Synopsis: When the local mosque is burned to the ground in an apparent hate crime, the town of Victoria, Texas, must overcome its age-old political, racial, and economic divides to find a collective way forward. The series continues 6 p.m., Jan.3 with Razing Liberty Square, by Katja Esson and Ann Bennett. Liberty City, Miami, is home to one of the oldest segregated public housing projects in the United States. Now with rising sea levels, the neighborhood’s higher ground has become something else: real estate gold. Feb. 7: Breaking the News, by Heather Courtney, Princess Hairston, Chelsea Hernandez, and Diane M Quon. March 13: Matter of Mind: My Parkinson’s, by Anna Moot-Levin and Laura Green. April 24: The Tuba Thieves, by Alison O’Daniel. APL’s Pine Hills Branch is an accessible building and there are several handicapped spaces in the parking lot. It can also be reached by bus (via Routes 10, 11, 114, 138, and 763). Films include closed captioning. This year’s Indie Lens Pop-Up series will feature both inperson and virtual events in more than 40 cities across the U.S. Each film will make its television debut on INDEPENDENT LENS, and will be available to stream on the PBS App.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — They call themselves a happy accident that could only have happened in this century. The six singers of ACCENT first performed live at an international choral festival in Umeå, Sweden in 2014. While the selfdescribed “jazz vocal nerds” became fans of one other’s elaborate multi-tracked jazz vocal videos on YouTube - in 2011 they began collaborating on new vocal

arrangements and videos over the Internet – their first live performance came only a few days after meeting one another in person. Musically, they clicked and since that first in-person meeting, they have released five albums, amassed millions of views on YouTube, and performed live in concert halls, jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and Asia.

ACCENT is: Jean-Baptiste (“JB”) Craipeau (France), tenor 1; Simon Åkesson (Sweden), tenor 2; Danny Fong (Canada), tenor 3; Andrew Kesler (Canada), tenor 4; James Rose (United Kingdom), baritone; and Evan Sanders (USA), bass. They will stage a show in Saratoga Springs at Caffe Lena on Sunday, Dec. 10. For more information, and tickets, go to: caffelena.org.

Police Beat Fire New Horse Racing Syndicate in Holiday Hockey Honors Family Legacy Classic, But Kids Are the Real Winners

Photo provided by Chris Stewart

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga police were apparently too hot for the city’s fire department to handle. At the fifth annual Holiday Hockey Classic, the boys in blue beat the firefighters 12-2. The event benefited the Franklin Community Center’s Holiday Assistance Program, which aims to deliver a Christmas present to every Saratoga child that needs one. According to firefighter Chris Stewart, this year’s game resulted in more than 800 toys collected and $2,000 raised, surpassing last year’s totals. Attendees packed the Weibel Ice Rink for the event. “We had a standing-roomonly crowd,” Stewart said. The presents and funds were donated to the Franklin Community Center on Monday morning via fire and

police vehicles. “I play Christmas carols over the PA system of the ladder truck,” Stewart said. “A lot of people were out and about and they stopped and waved and were curious why Christmas carols were being played instead of a siren on a fire truck.” The donated toys gifted to the kids included Barbies, Hot Wheels, coloring books, and board games. “I can’t thank everyone that donated and attended the game enough,” Stewart said. “This entire event is make or break by how much the community comes together to support it.” Stewart mentioned that sponsors such as Skidmore Hockey, King’s Tavern, the Adirondack Thunder, and the Bread Basket Bakery were “truly the ones that make this game what it is.”

by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

GREENWICH — When New York horse racing veteran Glenn DiSanto died in 2017, his son Brendon decided that his father’s legacy should live on. The elder DiSanto was a horse trainer and breeder for more than thirty years, credited with being one of the first people to use the Oklahoma Training Track at the Saratoga Race Course during the offseason. In 1984, DiSanto purchased Summit View Farm in Greenwich. It was here that he raised his son Brendon, who still lives on the property. “I currently have three retired horses, all of which my dad trained on the farm,” Brendon said.

Brendon launched the horse syndicate Summit View Racing about a year ago. The venture started with a few friends but has since expanded to “people who are interested in getting into racing at a more affordable cost,” Brendon said. “Our goal is to keep it friendly, fun, and for everyone; keep the legacy of my dad alive essentially.” Brendon is currently a project manager for Plug Power, but is eager to make a permanent jump into the horse business. “I see this being a full-time business within the next two to three years,” he said. “We want to make money, obviously, but we’re in it for fun.” Glenn DiSanto won his final race at Belmont Park in 2015. His son hopes more victories will follow, but emphasized

that the horses themselves are a top priority. “We want to win and we want to continue to grow,” Brendon said, “but the legacy that [my father] built was horses come first, then it’s the business side of it. I want to keep that point alive as we continue to do this.” To learn more about Summit View Racing, visit summitviewracing.com.

Saratoga Boys Cross-Country: A Season of Championships and Disappointment by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY

Games

Fun And

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs boys cross-country team captured a state championship this year, but still has its sights set on a bigger prize. At the beginning of summer training, the team’s two primary goals were to win the state championship and qualify for nationals. They accomplished the first goal, but not the second. Last weekend, the Blue Streaks finished third at the Nike Cross Country Regional Qualifier, just one spot away from a trip to the national championship. The team “believed certainly they were capable of qualifying,” said Coach Shane Zanetti. “We had just beaten the two teams that qualified at states a couple weeks before.” “I think it was mostly a matter of us just almost going out and being too aggressive to start off the race,” Zanetti said. “We were probably winning at the mile mark; we were at second place at the halfway point, and then we just weren’t able to keep it together through that last mile and finish where we wanted to.” Despite the disappointment at regional qualifiers, the team is still proud of its season as a whole, especially the sixman tiebreaker victory at states. “The state meet was an awesome, awesome experience and awesome race,” Zanetti said. The tiebreaker finish supported Zanetti’s belief that every runner is valuable. “We really like to emphasize that everybody has a

purpose, from the top guys down to the final runners on our team,” Zanetti said. Nonetheless, it would be hard to think about the Blue Streaks’ season without mentioning standout sophomore Thomas Isenovski. “From our first couple races of the season, Thomas definitely emerged as a frontrunner,” Zanetti said. “He’s very quiet but you can see that he’s very confident in himself.” At states, Isenovski helped capture the Blue Streaks’ first team title since 2012. Now, Zanetti and his squad are tasked with developing a strategy that will get them above and beyond the success of 2023. “We talked about the idea of maybe training a little harder through the local meets and building things up a little bit more and not cutting back until we get to the state meet next year,” Zanetti said. The coach also wondered if the team believed a bit too much in its own abilities. Zanetti said that next season the Blue Streaks might be “a little bit more conservative in developing a race plan, especially for the course that regionals is at.” Zanetti said his team will work on managing emotions and “learning how to kind of keep them in check until you’re really ready to make that big move.” As the preparation for next year begins, Zanetti indicated that the emphasis will continue to be on the importance of the team over any one individual. “I think there’s a lot of trust and respect between everybody, so we’re very proud of that part of our program,” he said.

Tim Horst said that the Blue Streaks’ goal this year was to “come together as a unit.” “We’re really big on team building and culture, and also representing our school the best way possible,” Horst said. Last season, the team’s

juniors and sophomores gained considerable experience playing together consistently. This year, Horst intends to focus on the things his players can control, such as attitude and energy. The Blue Streaks’ season will be competitive early on,

with two non-league games this weekend against Saint Mary’s and Penfield. Both games will be played at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rink on Weibel Ave. On December 20, Saratoga will play against Shenendehowa at the Clifton Park Arena for

“Stick it to Cancer” night. At the event, both teams will raise money to donate to the American Cancer Society. Coach Horst shared his team’s final roster heading into the season... See lineup on the back page...
