SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Springs Participatory Budgeting Committee will be holding online public voting for the second cycle of project proposals through Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Saratoga Springs residents over the age of 18 are able to cast their ballot towards their favorite projects.

The Participatory Budgeting process encourages local community members to participate in the City’s budget process by voting on how to spend a portion of up to 0.25% of the City’s total budget - approximately $153,000, give or take.

Final funding decisions will be made by the City Council in late December.

Saratoga National Historical Park Presents The French-American Joint Reconnaissance Tour in the Winter of 1780-1781 STILLWATER — Saratoga NHP’s Fall Lecture Series in partnership with the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield. will host “Retracing Our Steps: The FrenchAmerican Joint Reconnaissance Tour in the Winter of 1780-1781” on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The event will take place at the Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center Theater.

Studying the terrain to analyze how the action unfolded on Revolutionary War battlefields isn’t just a modern pursuit. It was the first order of business when the French Army arrived on American soil, seeking to understand the war they had just joined.

Contrary to popular belief, French and American officers

did not sit idle over the winter of 1780–81. Rather, the French organized a joint reconnaissance mission to previous battlefields of the American Revolution under the initiative of François-Jean de Chastellux, an overlooked figure who played a crucial role as a liaison officer between the French and Americans, and in the logistical and strategic planning of the allied army. Dr. de Rode’s discovery of his unpublished private papers, in the ancestral château of the Chastellux family in Burgundy, reveals numerous details about his role, especially on this forgotten reconnaissance mission, including an in depth study of the battlefield of Saratoga.

Dr. de Rode, who is originally from the Netherlands, received her doctorate from the Université de Paris in November 2019. Her dissertation was based on her discovery of the private papers of François-Jean de Chastellux, one of the French generals who served at Yorktown.

She published a biography on Chastellux in 2022 for which she won the 2023 Prix Guizot of the Académie Française for “best history book of the year.”

TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga will present a one-day living history event on Saturday, Dec. 16, which will bring to life Henry Knox’s epic feat as he prepared to move massive cannon from Ticonderoga to Boston to force the British evacuation of 1776.

Attendees may stand inside Fort Ticonderoga on the very spot where Henry Knox began his Noble Train of Artillery.

Highlighted programming

throughout the day will immerse visitors in the daily life of December 1775 at Ticonderoga.

Join in with soldiers who work as carpenters to build new bunks. See horsepower, oxpower, and manpower in action as they move, test, and load cannon. Discover how testing the cannon was vital for weapons destined for the siege of Boston. Learn about the science of gunnery, preserved in Fort Ticonderoga’s massive cannon

collection and archives. Explore the simple luxuries enjoyed by American Continental Officers and learn more about what they ate, where they slept, and other details of daily life.

The event is free to Ticonderoga Ambassador Pass holders and Fort Ticonderoga Members, with no reservations required. Tickets for the general public can be purchased online in advance at www.fortticonderoga.org or upon arrival.

Saratoga Springs Saratoga Casino Hotel Donates Heritage Area Visitor $120,000 to Local Organizations Center Kicks-off Annual Mitten Tree Program

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The annual Mitten Tree Program is up and running and will continue through Jan. 3, the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center announced during its Nov. 28 program launch.

Members of the local community are invited to contribute warm winter wear to the Visitor Center Mitten Tree - located at 297 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. All donations will benefit CAPTAIN Community Human Services, Franklin Community Center,

and Shelters of Saratoga.

Instead of ornaments or lights, the tree is decorated with warm winter items such as hats, scarves, gloves, and of course, mittens. Those wishing to donate are encouraged to hang new or handmade items upon the tree.

The Visitor Center is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesdays– Saturdays.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Casino Hotel announced $120,000 in donations on Wednesday in the Vapor night club.

The money was split evenly

between twelve organizations, including Albany Medical Health System – Saratoga Hospital, Franklin Community Center, SNACpack Program (Saratoga Nutrition Assistance for Children), and Saratoga Sponsor-A-Scholar.

“It’s an honor to give back

to these wonderful organizations in this community,” said Vice President of External Affairs Skip Carlson in a statement. “We’ve been hosting this event for 19 years now, and it’s so heartwarming to hear each year how these organizations are truly making a difference in the lives of so many.”

4 Eileen Q. Wise SARATOGA SPRINGS — Eileen Q. Wise of Saratoga Springs, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and caring nurse passed away peacefully at the age of 84. She departed this world on November 22, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, care, and unwavering love.

Born on March 11, 1939 in Amsterdam, NY to parents Thomas Quinn and Henrietta Quinn (Bruck), she was a graduate of St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam and went on to Albany Medical Center School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse, later working as such for Albany Medical Center, The Saratoga Springs City School District, and The Saint John Neumann Residence for elderly priests.

A devout Catholic, Eileen was involved with St. Clement’s Church in Saratoga Springs as a Eucharistic Minister and Religious Education Teacher, and later in life continued her ministry at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples, FL. Her commitment to the well-being of others was her calling, approaching each day she lived with a genuine desire to make a positive impact on those she served.

As a mother, Eileen was the epitome of love and selflessness, creating a home filled with love, laughter,

Also surviving Eileen is her brother Thomas Quinn, Jr. (Kathryn), and several nieces and nephews.

Eileen’s joy of life extended to the role of grandmother, where she delighted in the company of her 16 grandchildren, often hosting the entire family for holiday and family gatherings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY on Friday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 150 West Avenue, Saratoga Springs NY. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at The Wesley Community for care given to Eileen late in life.

SARATOGA COUNTY COURT David T. Henderson, 47, of Fort Edward, was sentenced on Nov. 28 to 8 years’ incarceration and 3 years’ post-release supervision, following his conviction of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third-degree.

Henderson was arrested in connection with drug-dealing activities that took place March 2023 in Halfmoon, Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen said, in a statement. A search warrant executed on Henderson’s vehicle revealed nearly one-half kilo cocaine and numerous fentanyl pills in his possession. Henderson had at least five prior felony drug convictions, Heggen added.

Bowie T. Bouchard, 36, was sentenced Nov. 27 to one year incarceration, after pleading to felony grand larceny, charged March 2023 in Clifton Park.

Tristan J. Mason, 20, of Halfmoon, pleaded Nov. 27 to felony burglary, charged January 2023 in Halfmoon.

Jeffrey W. Fish, 38, of Queensbury, pleaded Nov. 28 to felony criminal possession of stolen property in the fourthdegree, charged August 2023 in Moreau. Sentencing Feb. 6.

Ross M. Armer, 42, of Schuylerville, was sentenced Nov. 29 to 5 years’ probation, after pleading to felony DWI, charged February 2023 in Wilton.

Stashu I. Roberts, 27, of Gloversville, pleaded Nov. 28 to felony burglary in the third-degree, charged Aug. 25 in Wilton, and felony grand larceny in the fourthdegree charged in Saratoga Springs. Sentencing Feb. 6.

SARATOGA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Brittany J. Kennedy, 31, of Mechanicville, was sentenced to 6 months’ incarceration, after pleading to felony DWI, charged March 2023 in Waterford.

Michael T. May, 27, pleaded Nov. 28 to rape in the thirddegree, charged January 2021 in Malta, and promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child, charged December 2022 in Moreau. Sentencing Feb. 6.

Daniel E. Hammon, 37, of Troy, pleaded Nov. 29 to attempted burglary in the third-degree, a felony. Charged July 2023 in Halfmoon. Sentencing Jan. 17.

A 15-year-old Shenendehowa High School student was arrested Nov. 27 and charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon, after being allegedly found in possession of a bb pistol, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s office. The arrest was the result of an investigation after the Sheriff ’s Office’s school resource officer (SRO) was alerted to a student at East who was reportedly in possession of a pistol. The 15-year-old was released to the custody of a parent pending further action in the matter. County Sheriff Michael H. Zurlo commended the quick reaction of both the school and SRO. “I am happy that we were able to get to the

5 bottom of this without anyone getting hurt,” Zurlo said in a statement.

The Sheriff ’s Office responded to a residence in the town of Ballston on Nov. 22, regarding a hidden camera that had been installed in the bedroom of a female without her knowledge or permission. As a result of the investigation of the incident, Ojay O. Smith, 29, of Burnt Hills, was arrested and charged with felony Unlawful Surveillance in the second-degree. Smith was arraigned in the Malta Town Court and released on his own recognizance pending further action in the matter. An order of protection was also issued to the victim, who is known to Smith. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

Anthony Allen, 46, of Albany, was charged Nov. 23 with robbery in the third-degree.

Saratoga County “Gather and Dine Program” Available at Saratoga Senior Center SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga County’s Department of Aging and Youth Services will offer its Gather and Dine program at the Saratoga Senior Center in Saratoga Springs - 209 West Ave Suite 1, Saratoga Springs - beginning Monday, Dec. 11.

The program offers hot, nutritious meals to seniors ages 60 and older free of charge along with the opportunity to socialize with other seniors in their area. All meals are prepared by Mazzone Hospitality.

Lunches are served at Noon Monday through Friday.

Those interested can make

reservations by signing up at the Saratoga Senior Center or by calling the Saratoga County Department of Aging and Youth Services at 518-363-4020.

Reservations are required. “To Go” meals are not available.

There are 5 total projects on the ballot for potential funding: Bocce Ball Court, Saratoga Farmer’s Market, Opera Saratoga Family Programming, Solar Charging Bench for the Saratoga Springs Public Library, and Lake Avenue School Centennial Celebration.

Bocce Ball: Construction of one (1) bocce ball court in Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Opera Saratoga Family Programming: Produce five (5) outreach opera performances in Saratoga Springs and the State Park for children

Lake Ave School Centennial Celebration: Celebrate Lake Ave Schools’ upcoming centennial by recording oral histories and memories, photograph mementos and produce an exhibition for display at the Saratoga Springs Public Library (location pending). Project submitted by Lake Avenue PTA. Estimated Cost: $10,000. Location: Lake Avenue School, 126 Lake Ave. Solar Charging Bench for Public Library: Provide a convenient and clean energy charging source for electronic devices to Saratoga Springs residents and visitors. Located outside of the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Project submitted by Saratoga Springs Public Library.

Public Safety Commissioner-Elect Tim Coll Appoints Deputy SARATOGA SPRINGTS — Newly-elected Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Tim Coll announced he has appointed Daniel G. Charleson as Deputy Public Safety Commissioner. Coll’s two-year term begins Jan. 1, 2024.

Charleson has more than 29 years of experience with the New York State Police, retiring in late November as a Captain and acting Major. His most recent assignment was as Detail Commander for the Protective Services Unit (PSU) which provides protection for NYS

Governor Kathy Hochul and the First Family as well as other dignitaries across New York.

FOUR-DAY BELMONT FESTIVAL COMING TO SARATOGA IN JUNE

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The city long-called The August Place To Be was granted a late springtime addition to that moniker with this week’s official announcement naming Saratoga Race Course as the staging ground for June’s four-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

“Saratoga now adds to its storied history by hosting the third leg of the Triple Crown,” Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Dec. 6, inspiring thoughts of warmer climes on a day when the local community saw the gentle tumble of errant flurries.

“It’s a win for horseracing and for the Capital Region to have the excitement and the ability to host the four-day Festival in June at America’s most historic track.”

The four-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival will be staged Thursday, June 6 through Sunday, June 9. The Belmont Stakes race will run Saturday, June 8. No changes are anticipated regarding Saratoga’s 40-day summer meet.

The relocation of the stakes race and its associated four-day festival will allow for the uninterrupted construction of a new Belmont Park on Long Island.

And while construction is anticipated to go on at least through the 2025 Belmont Stakes season, only the 2024 festival at Saratoga was announced this week.

“It is a temporary situation, and we hope to be even further ahead of schedule so we can end sooner, but it’s good to at least have an alternative to shutting

down Belmont completely, and can take the races elsewhere in the state,” Gov. Hochul said at a presser shortly after the Belmont announcement.

The four-day festival at Saratoga Race Course will include 23 stakes races in total with purses totaling $9.7 million.

The New York Racing Association began signaling earlier this year that some Belmont races would be shifted to Saratoga. Statements punctuated with optimism from the political and tourism worlds alike were issued with a ferocity shortly after Wednesday morning’s announcement, showcasing the affair as a driver of tourism, a major boon for the economy, an inspiration to partner with new stakeholders and something to further showcase the region’s world-class attractions.

A different track brings with it additional changes: due to the configuration of Saratoga’s main track, the Belmont Stakes will be contested at 1 1/4 miles in 2024 rather than the traditional 1 1/2 miles, pending the approval of the North American Graded Stakes Committee.

Inaugurated in 1867 at Jerome Park Racetrack and moved in 1905 to Belmont Park, the Belmont Stakes has notably provided Secretariat’s 31-length victory in 1973 and American Pharoah successfully ending a 37-year Triple Crown drought in 2015. The race was staged at Aqueduct Racetrack from 1963-1967 when Belmont Park last underwent significant renovations.

Following the conclusion

of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga, the NYRA circuit will return to Aqueduct Racetrack for the remainder of the spring meet before racing shifts to Saratoga for the annual 40-day summer meet beginning Thursday, July 11. The fall meet customarily held at Belmont Park will again be shifted to Aqueduct Racetrack in 2024 while construction of a new Belmont Park continues.

Ticket packages and pricing for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga Race Course will be available in early 2024.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new cafe and corner market is set to open in downtown Saratoga Springs early next year, according to owner Stephen Mittler. The establishment will replace the closed Tailgate and Party shop at 33 Phila St. The market will serve “the

best breakfast sandwiches in town, yogurt parfaits, fruit cups, salads, soups, and a solid selection of grab and go craving solutions,” said Mittler in a Facebook post announcement.

Convenience store items and candy will also be for sale.

The cafe portion of the business will feature an appetizer-only menu, along with alcoholic beverages.

Drug Free Treatment of Back Pain

It is also the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.

Moreover, as lifestyles have become more sedentary and the rate of obesity has risen, back pain has become

increasingly prevalent, even among young children. Spinal health is an important factor in preventing back pain, as well as maintaining overall health and well-being. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) encourages people to take steps to improve their spinal health and avoid injury.

Things such as better nutrition, exercise, ergonomic workspaces and proper lifting and movement techniques can go a long way in helping people to strengthen their spines and potentially avoid serious injury and chronic pain. When back pain hits, research shows that a conservative, drug-free approach to treatment is the best option.

Conservative Treatment Options Supported by Research Treatment for back pain has come a long way. It was once believed that taking pain medication and getting some rest and relaxation were the best course of treatment for a bout of low back pain, but nowadays research supports first trying drug-free, conservative options for pain management while remaining as active as possible during recuperation.

treatment guidelines to support a conservative approach to care.

In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released updated guidelines for prescribing opioids that also promote the use of non-pharmacologic alternatives for the treatment of chronic pain.

In 2015, the Joint Commission, the organization that accredits more than 20,000 health care systems in the U.S. (including every major hospital), recognized the value of non-drug approaches to pain management by adding chiropractic and acupuncture to its pain management standard.

Beyond the risks of overuse and addiction, prescription drugs that numb pain may also convince a patient that a

musculoskeletal condition such as back pain is less severe than it is, or that it has healed. Masking back pain with medication can lead to over-exertion and a delay in the healing process or even to permanent injury. With the steep costs associated with prescription drugs, chiropractic’s conservative approach makes economic sense as well. A 2012 study found that spinal manipulation for neck and back pain was cost-effective when used either alone or combined with other therapies.

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.

Chiropractic services are

used most often to treat conditions such as back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Challenging the Probate of a Last Will and Testament Your Right to Examinations Before Making Objections

by Matt Dorsey for Saratoga TODAY I have previously written in these pages about challenges to a Last Will and Testament. I have said that such challenges are limited in nature, rare, and by no means commonly successful. What do you do, however, if you think there may be a reason to challenge a Will, but you believe you do not have all the information you need to make the decision?

If you are a party to the probate proceeding, you have a statutory right under Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act (SCPA) section 1404 to examine the witnesses to the Will and the person who wrote the Will (“the draftsperson”).

What does it mean to examine the witnesses and draftsperson?

The witnesses and draftsperson would be required to appear either in court or at a deposition and give sworn testimony under oath. Generally,

the examinations are done in court, but the presiding judge can permit the examinations to occur outside the courtroom at a sworn deposition.

What can you ask during the examinations?

The scope of your questions is generally considered to be fairly broad, as soon as the questions are relevant to the probate of the Will. For example, you could ask about the specifics of the signing ceremony where the witnesses were present. Was anyone else present in the room? Was the Will signer wearing his or her glasses? Did the Will signer review the Will before signing?

Questions of that nature would all be likely considered relevant by the presiding judge.

Are you entitled to any documents in connection with the examinations?

Yes. The party conducting the examinations has a right to document discovery under Civil Practice Law and Rules (CPLR) Article 31. Typically, you would seek copies of prior Wills, any notes related to the Will preparation, and anything else you could argue would be relevant to the examinations.

Can you examine anyone else under oath?

Yes. If there is an in terrorem clause, you may examine the nominated executor and the proponent of the Will (which is usually the same person). An in terrorem clause is a clause which would result in a beneficiary losing

their gift under the Will if they were to challenge the Will.

You could examine potential additional witnesses upon the approval of the court.

What additional witnesses could the court approve of?

The court could potentially approve the examination of additional witnesses if it found them able to “provide information with respect to the validity of the will that is of substantial importance or relevance to a decision to file objections to the will.” (SCPA 1404(4)).

What are Objections?

Objections are formal written allegations that argue against the court admitting the proposed Will to probate. The probate of the Will is usually accompanied by the issuance of Letters Testamentary to the nominated Executor. If the Will is admitted to probate and Letters Testamentary issued to the Executor, then the administration of the decedent’s estate will commence.

When are Objections made?

Objections can be made before or after SCPA 1404 examinations occur. SCPA 1404 examinations are somewhat rare, but if they occur, the party who seeks the examinations is usually seeking information to see if Objections are appropriate to bring against the probate of the Will.

If SCPA 1404 examinations occur, what happens next?

If Objections have not already been brought, the

court will likely provide some additional time (i.e. 10 days or two weeks) to allow the party who sought the examinations to decide whether or not to file Objections. If no Objections are filed, then the probate of the Will likely occurs and Letters Testamentary will likely be issued to the Executor.

When would it make sense to request SCPA 1404 examinations?

You would be well advised to discuss the matter with an attorney experienced in estate administration. Such an attorney could discuss with you what type of Objections could be made and whether SCPA 1404 examinations would be useful in making that decision.

Objections and SCPA 1404 examinations are not common, so you would want to obtain

legal advice before going forward with such an effort.

If you have concerns about a Will being probated, a consultation with an experienced attorney will allow you to better understand the probate process and your legal rights. If Objections or SCPA 1404 examinations are not appropriate, there may be other steps that could be taken to ensure your rights with regard to the decedent’s estate are protected.

Christmas Confessions of a Post-Babyhood Mother “MOTHERING BOYS”

by Kate Morna Towne for Saratoga TODAY I was really feeling the Christmas spirit the other day.

You know how people just seem to be in a good mood when things get Christmasy? And things that might usually annoy them can sometimes just be brushed aside? I was feeling that!

Before I tell you about it, though, I need to tell you one of my dark secrets: I’ve held a deep grudge against a certain gentleman for about five years. I don’t even know his name — not that I would tell you if I did — but five years ago I was doing one of my many back-and-forths through our beautiful city on my school pick-up runs and my youngest was a newborn. When he was a newborn, he hated being in the van. Hated it! He cried and cried and cried the whole time, which would make me sweat with anxiety. Literally sweat. I’d be soaked when I got home. The only thing that would take the edge of his crying — the tiniest edge — was forward motion, so I dreaded stop signs and stop lights. As long as we kept driving, there was the possibility of a moment of peace here and there for him and me and anyone else in the van. But this gentleman, on official business, chose my van to be the first vehicle in a line of cars that he needed to stop for a few minutes.

That was it! That is the big reason there’s been a shadow over this man in my mind for these five years! A man who was doing his job, who had no

reason to know I was losing my mind with a screaming baby, who had no reason to know that him stopping the traffic made my life so very much harder in those few minutes. I’ve thought of him and this ridiculous grudge of mine many times over the last few years and wished I could have a softer heart toward him. And the other day, it happened! I saw him doing his job — the same job he was doing when I had that incident five years ago — and I didn’t feel angry! I was sure it was the magic of Christmas!

I had another memory the other day of another man who made me angry, right around the same time as the traffic one. This was one of the boys’ coaches — I won’t tell you which boy or which sport, and certainly not which coach — but he was a coach that would regularly keep my son and his team extra long at the end of practice. This would often mean I’d be waiting in the van for fifteen or twenty minutes past the time that practice was supposed to be over. I would absolutely lose my mind over this! Back then, I was still deep in “schedule mode”: everything ran more smoothly at home and everyone was happier (especially me) when feedings and naps happened when they were supposed to.

But my older boys were old enough at this point that they had things going on that interfered with the schedules. My mental peace took a real hit if the baby’s nap had to be cut short, or if he screamed more than usual when out and about because of being tired, or if he fell asleep in the van while we were doing all the driving around, which would inevitably happen just before we got home, and then he’d wake up when I tried to transition him into the house without waking him. It was the absolute worst. So when we were sitting in the van waiting for my son to be done with practice, and it was going far past the time that I had used to

make new schedule calculations, I felt like screaming, or making my son quit the team, or marching up to the coach myself — in the middle of the players — and telling him what’s what. That my son would die of embarrassment was only a small deterrent; the bigger one was that I couldn’t march over to the coach because I couldn’t leave everyone alone in the van, and the idea of getting them all out of the van was a far more painful proposition than sitting in the driver’s seat and fuming.

I’ll tell you, though — I was waiting to pick up a son at a practice that ran long the other day, and I didn’t feel like screaming! Or pulling my son from the team! Or marching over to the coach! In fact, sitting there in the quiet van while everyone else was home (because I can do that now! I have big boys who can watch little boys and

I can pop out to get someone from practice without getting everyone dressed and out the door!) was so pleasant. I had my phone to noodle around on and Christmas songs on the radio.

No one was crying or ruining their bedtime with an off-schedule nap. I was not stressed! It was that Christmas spirit again!

Probably at this point you’re realizing what took me a bit to realize, which is that while, yes, the Christmas spirit really does work miracles sometimes, the only miracle at play in my two stories is that I no longer have very tiny children. Now I’m just normal-annoyed if I get held up

in traffic, and if I want to go tell the coach that my son needs to come with me now, I’ll just do it, no big deal, and I honest-togoodness won’t even be angry.

It’s so funny to me when I have these realizations — life was one way for so long, and now it’s another! I miss those days of tiny boys, but memories like these remind me there’s a time and a season for everything.

I’d still like to think of it as Christmas spirit, though! A very merry Christmas to you all!

Saratoga Author Releases New Children’s Book

Photo provided STORY TIME SARATOGA SPRINGS — Local author, Fran Dingeman, releases her first book, called The Animal Menagerie. The book was officially launched last week at a celebration for contributors, family, and friends at Saratoga Arts.

The Animal Menagerie, written by Francine Dingeman and illustrated by Marta Maszkiewicz, is an A to Z picture book for children ages 4-7. The characters are animals for each letter of the alphabet. The book is written to entertain and educate by introducing dozens of creative new words to a child’s vocabulary. The Animal Menagerie uses rhyme to help children remember animal names, learn new words, and teach their meanings through the use of imagery and animal tales.

“Writing a book was something I talked about doing for years,” said Dingeman. “In 2021, I decided to act on it. The Animal Menagerie was created with a goal of elevating a child’s vocabulary while entertaining them in the process. Fabian the Fly takes the young reader on a learning adventure to meet new animal friends and hear of their tales. Parents will enjoy sharing this book with their children and may even learn something new in the process.”

Dingeman continued, “I am grateful to so many who offered their guidance through the selfpublishing process, and in particular to Saratoga Arts, who helped make this project financially possible through the Community

Lions Club Scholarships Open

SARATOGA SPRINGS — $30,000 in scholarships is up for grabs, thanks to the Saratoga Springs Lions Club.

Applications for the 2024 Scholarship Program are available from the guidance counselors at Saratoga Springs High School and Saratoga Catholic High School. All graduating high school students in the Saratoga school district are eligible to apply.

There are several different categories of scholarships: •$10,000 Lions Foundation Jack Berkowitz Memorial Award •$5,000 and $2,500 FourYear Academic Program Awards •$2,500 Leos Club Member Scholarship Award •$2,500 Two-Year Academic Program Award •$2,500 Career Technology Education Award Most of the scholarships pay out a portion of the award money on a yearly basis. YIELDS: 6-8 servings PREP & COOK TIME: 1 ½ hours, plus 4 hours of overnight chilling

INGREDIENTS:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market • 1 pound croissants* (about 5 to 7), split in half lengthwise

• 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh sage*

• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, more for baking dish

• 3 cups whole milk*

• 8 large eggs* • 1 cup heavy cream

• 1 bunch scallions* (6 to 7), white and light green parts thinly sliced, greens reserved

• 8 ounces Gruyère or other smooth-melting, creamy cheese*, grated (2 cups)

• ¾ pound sausage*, casings removed

• 1 teaspoon black pepper

• 1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Heat oven to 500 degrees. Spread croissants on a large baking sheet and toast, cut side up, until golden brown, 5 to 10 minutes (watch carefully to see that they do not burn). Let cool, then tear into large bite-size pieces.

2. In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, warm the olive oil. Add sliced scallions and sausage meat; cook, breaking up meat with a fork until mixture is well browned, about 5 minutes. Stir in sage, and remove from heat.

3. In a large bowl, toss together croissants and sausage mixture.

In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, 1 1/2 cups cheese, salt and pepper.

4. Lightly oil a 9- x 13-inch baking dish. Turn croissant mixture into the pan, spreading it out evenly over the bottom.

Pour custard into pan, pressing croissants down gently to help absorb the liquid. Cover pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.

5. When you’re ready to bake the casserole, heat oven to 350 degrees. Scatter the remaining grated cheese over the top of the casserole. Transfer to oven and bake until casserole is golden brown and firm to the touch, 45 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes. Garnish with sliced scallion tops before serving.

Hello my Foodie Friends !

This week includes one of my favorite holiday stories to tell, since it reflects community, and the genuine feel of downtown holiday shopping. When I was a young boy the holiday season was my family’s favorite time of year. Of course, my parents used it to its full potential to keep three boys and two girls in line. Our biggest thrill was the chance to go downtown and peek into the store front windows seeing the latest toys and letting Santa, Mom, and Dad know what we wanted under the tree. For myself and my brothers, it was especially hard to refrain from becoming the Three Stooges avoiding our usual antics and teasing of each other. If we didn’t get along then we risked getting nothing and my Dad was a man of his word.

We also loved this time of year because Mom and Dad became a dynamic team and focused on our happiness instead of the day-to-day problems they faced with finance issues that were typical of the middle class back then. It seemed like Mom and Dad knew every shop owner by their first name and all the shop personnel always fussed over their children.

Shopping downtown was a magical event for us. The snowcovered trees, merchants’ store fronts decorated with animated figures, holiday lights, decorations, and music. Each of us would run free to pursue the treasures that we wanted from Santa. We loved every store. For us a clothing store was a place that kept us from the toys. However, the clothing store mom loved was located on the top floor of one of the downtown buildings and you

Shopping Local FOR THE HOLIDAYS needed an elevator to get to it.

An ELEVATOR!!! Do any of you remember what the older style elevators were like? It was like a carnival ride. It even had an elevator operator (what I wanted to be when I grew up).

At the end of our shopping day, we would have a wonderful meal as a family, sitting exhausted filled with memories that would last a lifetime.

Consider shopping local this season. Shopping locally helps you connect with the people in your community and learn more about what is going on around you. When people come in my store during the holiday season, they call out to me and exclaim; “Hello Mr. Reardon! We are some of your Foodie Friends!” Economically, spending money locally gives back to the community. Why not make holiday shopping a family event? Shopping should be an enjoyable experience with interactions that leave us feeling good versus feeling like we have to do a chore. I find that’s far more likely to happen when I’m patronizing local independent businesses. Learn and experience product quality and durability, getting expert advice without having to waste time doing your own research. Aside from the experience, physical contact with an item makes people feel more certain about a purchase decision. When you go to a store, you know what you’re getting.

The price is there. There’s no shipping fee. You can see the item, hold the item, and get the instant gratification you desire from buying the item. Savor the sights, sounds and smells of the season while shopping. During the holidays the shops are filled with festive decorations, sounds and smells. When you step through the doors and hear “Jingle Bells” or “It’s the Most

SKILLET GNOCCHI WITH SAUSAGE & BROCCOLI RABE

INGREDIENTS

• 1 pound store-bought gnocchi • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 sweet onion, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 pound cooked Italian sausage, sliced • 1 bunch broccoli rabe, cut into bite-size pieces • ½ cup chicken broth

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper • ½ teaspoon red-pepper flakes (optional) • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook until the pasta floats to the surface, 4 to 5 minutes.

Drain the gnocchi.

2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, 1 minute more.

SAMMY HAGAR, JOE SATRIANI JOIN FORCES FOR 28-DATE TOUR, STAGES JULY 22 AT SPAC SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sammy Hagar is bringing his 28-date “The Best Of All Worlds” 2024 tour to Saratoga Performing Arts Center, where he will be joined by bandmates Michael Anthony (bass, backing vocals), Jason Bonham (drums) and Joe Satriani (guitar).

The July 22 concert includes opening act Loverboy.

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” Hagar said, announcing the tour. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years.

We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really

embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I. We were at my Birthday Bash in Cabo for my 76th and looked at each other and high fived, like ‘let’s do it.’ We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs.”

SOLO EXHIBIT BY ARTIST ANNE DIGGORY OPENS AT SPRING STREET GALLERY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Spring Street Gallery welcomes Anne Diggory to share a collection of works called Near and Far. The exhibit includes recent Adirondack paintings and hybrid works along with paintings of Southern France. In a celebration of seeing and painting, Diggory focuses on the magical and sometimes confusing juxtapositions of clarity and mystery in spaces that include the near and the far.

“Sometimes in hybrid pieces I introduce fragments

of photography midway in the painting process, have the digital collage printed and then continue painting on the printed surface,” said Diggory. “The fragments extend the range of approaches to detail and introduce a level of dialogue about frozen moments and the transformation of information.”

An Artist Talk takes place 7 p.m. on Dec. 15, when Diggory will speak about how the approaches to detail, color and composition affect the expressive impact of the exhibition’s individual pieces. The exhibition

will be on view through Feb. 10 with a Closing Reception and Discussion slated for Jan. 28, 2024, at 2 p.m.

Diggory has worked out of her studio in Saratoga Springs for 45 years. She is known for her combination of accurate detail with expressive painting and strong abstract structure – an outgrowth of education at Yale and Indiana University and many years of exploring and painting the natural world. Her work has been seen in over 35 solo exhibitions and 75 group exhibitions.

35 Sports New Dorm Opens Adirondack United Next Year at Saratoga Race Course Girls Hockey Sets Sights on State Title

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new dormitory currently under construction near the Oklahoma Training Track at the Saratoga Race Course will open this spring, according to Patrick McKenna, Vice President of Communications for the New York Racing Association (NYRA).

“At Saratoga Race Course, the first of three new dorms is

taking shape on the Oklahoma side and will be open this spring,” McKenna wrote in a Tweet. “In addition, [the NYRA] will be renovating more than 40 backstretch residences in the coming years.”

The plan to build three new dorms at the track was announced last year. The buildings will add 204 beds and are the first housing units built at Saratoga since the early 1960s, according to the NYRA. Each dorm costs around $2 million to build.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Skidmore College has unveiled a newly-expanded locker room at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rink.

The 3,200-foot facility includes a changing area, training room, and coaches’ office.

“The new locker room provides a much more professional space for our team to get ready for games and practices,” said goalie

Tate Brandon in a statement.

“The locker room is a microcosm of how far our program has come, and just how far it will go.”

This season, the Skidmore Thoroughbreds are off to one of their best starts in decades. The team is currently ranked 13th nationally in NCAA Division III. The city also plans to make additional improvements to its ice rink on Weibel Ave. Earlier this year, new LED lights and automatic sliding doors were installed.

GLENS FALLS — “I don’t think anyone’s going to be satisfied unless we win a state title,” said Adirondack United Head Coach Jeff Willis. “I think that’s a pretty bold statement to make, but I know for the girls, that’s the target for them.”

The team’s goal is certainly not unrealistic. Last season, the United fell to Clinton 2-1 in the state championship game.

On the whole, the girls’ hockey squad finished its season with a 19-2-0 record. All this despite it being United’s inaugural season.

you’re hoping you can compete,” Willis said. “I could never have expected that we would reach all the way to the state championship final game. We far exceeded any expectations we had in year one.”

Much of the United’s core group will be back this season, including leading scorer Bayley Duffy. “She’s probably the best high school hockey player in New York State,” Willis said.

“She had a tremendous year.”

Also returning are forward Lillian Willis (the coach’s daughter), and goalie Ava Reynolds. “She was our number one goaltender last year,” Coach Willis said. “She was the one that got the majority of the

starts when we got down to the state playoffs.”

Before competing for this year’s state title, the United will have two opportunities to avenge last year’s loss against Clinton. The rivals will face off on December 22 at the Glens Falls Recreation Ice Center, and then again on January 6 at the Nexus Center.

The team’s first game is on Saturday, December 9 against Beekmantown.

The Adirondack United girls’ hockey team is comprised of players from the Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, South Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Queensbury, and Corinth High Schools.
