Neighbors: Snippets of Life from Your Community

WHO: Kaylee Delaney WHERE: Saratoga Springs City Center Q. What is your actual title at the City Center?

A. I am housekeeping and set up. It’s 90 percent cleaning, and sometimes I do chairs and pick up tables if the guys are busy doing something else.

Q. How would you describe your work ethic?

A. I love cleaning. For me, it’s more like 100 percent cleaning and if the guys have this much to do and I’m done with my list, then I go help them. I love my job. This is a great place.

Q. What’s your most memorable event at the City Center?

A. Oh, goodness. We have so many, that’s a very tough question. I would say, once a year, PHOTO BY: Larry Goodwin we do a very fun event where families bring in all of their children who have special needs, and we do all sorts of things. We do so many fun arts and crafts, and there’s a bounce house. It’s just a good thing for the families that have special-needs children or even the parents themselves. Everybody has such a fun time. Or the pet shows, because everybody loves pet shows…

We have Dance Flurry coming up next month, which will be 5,000 (or plus) people in the building for a two-, three-day period…We do so many events a year, it’s like non-stop.

Q. What do you do for fun?

A. When it’s not wintertime, I do a lot of hiking. I like to ice skate, but I haven’t been able to get really back into that. That’s one thing where, if you stop doing it for a while, you’ve got to have really good balance.

We’ll see if I get back into that. Fishing. Four-wheeling. I read often, go to the gym. That’s about it.

Q. Do you plan on staying in this area for life?

A. That I’m not so sure yet. I do love Saratoga, but there is a lot more of the world out there to see. And, actually, two years ago is when I really just started traveling, too. That’s another big one for me. One place a year, at least. My first trip…two years ago, I went to Vegas, and last year I went to New Zealand…I didn’t want to leave.

Q. Where else do you want to go?

A. Italy, Greece, Australia’s a big one…I do want to go to South Africa once. [Her partner] Nathan’s sister is there now, and she’s been sending me so many pictures. Just to go see all the animals and their actual way of life is pretty cool. Plus, other cultures are so interesting.

Then I want to go to Fiji, the Philippines and see all the different islands and stuff out there. The next trip will either be Florida or Hawaii. We’ll see…Nathan’s family is all military, Army, Navy. They travel quite often. His sister and his brother, their next placement might be in Japan. If they go there and get stationed over there, we’ll go visit, so that’s another one on my list.

St. Clement’s Students Travel the World

My name is Dan Curry, and I teach 9th and 10th grade World History. It is a privilege to educate both regents and AP college level history to my students about the complex and fascinating world they live in. My overall goal is to humanize history, equip students with the knowledge of historical trends, and how to recognize these trends in our modern world.

With this knowledge, students are better prepared to think critically about current events, and ground themselves in a global and historical perspective as they become adults.

To achieve this, students are given the opportunity to connect to history on a personal level in my classroom. For example, I incorporate my hobby of reenacting into the classroom.

Freshmen studying post classical exchange networks become silk road traders from China or West Africa and barter for trade goods.

Sophomores studying World War I become British soldiers and experience trench warfare in the school gym. No amount of worksheets could give students an emotional connection to the content like these reenactments do. It is this connection that makes history meaningful, engaging, and fun for my students.

Hi there, I’m Miss Barnes! I am blessed to be teaching English Language Arts, Writing Workshop, and World History to our sixth graders at SCC. Life in sixth grade is full of curiosity and exploration! We utilize various strategies including technology each day as a tool to develop our communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. This year we have taken “virtual field trips” to the savannas of Africa, pyramids of Egypt, and islands of Greece using our Chromebooks. We have read interactive texts and have expanded our knowledge by citing evidence to support our reasoning and utilizing specific word choice in our writing. As we look to the second half of the school year, we will continue to hone our writing skills in a new format… coding!

We can’t wait to publish short stories in this new (21st century) way. By focusing on what we refer to as “Think Tanks,” we continue to strive to initiate and improve communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity with our sixth graders. We are preparing to be lifelong learners and innovators.

Many visitors to our building are surprised when they see all the technology available to our students and teachers!

Our students are able to explore and appreciate the beauty of God’s creations through exciting opportunities provided by our STEM Program. Utilizing Google Expeditions they experience virtual reality while exploring the Great Barrier Reef, the International Space Station, the Tenement Museum, and the Vietnam Memorial, to name just a few locations. Students in third through fifth grades have taken a virtual field trip to the New England Aquarium to study sharks. Augmented reality has also allowed us to bring the Curiosity Rover down from space to examine it.

They learn about being good stewards of the earth and its resources through our current participation in the Trout in the Classroom Project, in which the students learn about the biology of fish, their habitats, and the chemistry of water through raising trout from eggs and releasing them. And the students get to use their creativity to find new solutions to common problems, like

exploring ways to provide shelter and appropriate housing for their neighbors by building well-insulated tiny houses using thermal cameras as monitoring tools.

They’re able to watch friction convert kinetic energy to thermal energy using their thermal cameras in fourth grade.

Project Lead the Way modules are used to guide many STEM activities at all grade levels. Students in grades 3 through 5 are also able to use 3D printing for STEM projects and CAD (computer-aided design).

There are so many exciting possibilities!

Questions Linger for Route 9 Development MALTA — On Monday, the Malta Town Board discussed the “Shecky” development, focusing primarily on the provision of additional water service.

Nearly 50 single-family homes are under construction near the site. The town board is considering a proposed change to local zoning so that a mixture of commercial and residential space near Route 9 can be added.

Scott Lansing of Lansing Engineering gave a brief

presentation on behalf of the applicant, Shecky Development LLC. He noted how Shecky is proposing a 2,500-foot extension of water lines south on Route 9 to benefit the hamlet of Maltaville.

But town board members said the water line extension alone would not solve multiple water problems that exist in Maltaville. They also discussed legal complications related to any combination of private and municipal water supplies.

OPIOID FORUM AT MECHANICVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HALFMOON — Halfmoon Supervisor Kevin Tollisen has announced that a community forum on heroin and opioid addiction will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5 at the Mechanicville High School Auditorium.

In an effort to inform and educate community residents

about the risks of heroin and prescription opioid use, the signs of addiction and the resources available to help, the forum features a panel of treatment specialists, physicians, addiction specialists, law enforcement, community partners and families of those affected.

Zegers was named a 2018 Rising Star along with honorees from five other counties in the Capital Region, including newly elected Town of Niskayuna

COURT Eric J. McIntosh, 27, of South Glens Falls, pleaded Jan. 18 to felony attempted assault, in connection with an incident in Corinth. Sentencing scheduled for March 6.

Nicholas J. Valick, 34, of Ballston Spa, was sentenced Jan. 18 to 2-1/2 to 5 years state prison, after pleading to promoting prison contraband, a felony.

Nathan K. Stone, 27, of Middle Grove, was sentenced Jan. 18 to 5 years state prison, after pleading to felony burglary, in connection with an incident in Milton.

POLICE Daniel P. Maloney, age 23, Scotia, was charged Jan. 18 with criminal mischief in the third-degree - a felony.

Rachel L. Arata, age 31, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 18 with misdemeanor DWI, and fail to keep right.

Madeline A. Meisner, age 21, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 9 two felony counts grand larceny, and one felony count criminal possession of stolen

property. Meisner was also charged Jan. 18 with identity theft in the first-degree, and grand larceny – both felonies, and one misdemeanor count petit larceny.

Brittany A. Matthey, age 32, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 18 with criminal mischief and attempted criminal obstruction of breathing – both misdemeanors.

William J. Kinisky, age 58, Cohoes, was charged Jan. 17 with operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, and two counts passing a red light.

Edward J. Brower, age 48, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 10 with felony DWI and felony aggravated unlicensed operation, two felony counts and one misdemeanor count criminal possession of a controlled substance, following a police stop for a traffic violation.

According to Saratoga Springs Police, Brower was allegedly found to be intoxicated and was arrested for DWI and operating a motor vehicle while his privilege to do so was revoked in New York State.

The charges are felonies based upon Brower’s previous driving record. He was also found to be in possession of over ten grams of powdered cocaine which was broken down into numerous smaller packets - and in possession of a small amount of concentrated cannabis.

Kimberly A. Schultz, age 47, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 18 with three misdemeanor counts criminal possession of a controlled substance, and fail to keep right.

Darrick D. Conners, age 44, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 17 with criminal trespass, and obstructing governmental administration. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Steven W. Harris, age 47, Saratoga Springs, was charged Jan. 17 with criminal trespass – a misdemeanor.

Jeremy J. Nicholas, age 24, and Candace A. Board, age 25, both of Saratoga Springs, were each charged Jan. 17 with two felony counts criminal possession of a controlled substance and one felony count criminal possession of marijuana.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Victor Liguori, 86, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on April 30, 1931 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Cosmo Liguori and Rosalia Gianfala Liguori.

Victor received his B.A. from Copper Union, School of Fine Arts and Engineering, Manhattan, NY and his M.F.A. from Yale University, New Haven, CT. He studied fine arts abroad in Pavia, Italy for a year before returning to Manhattan to work as a graphic artist.

Following his time in Manhattan he took a position at Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio for four years. He then became a Professor of Fine

SCHUYLERVILLE — Dr. Leo F. Nash, 90, a longtime resident of Schuylerville, passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 at Wesley Health Care Center surrounded by his family.

Born May 8, 1927 in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Leo J. and Elizabeth Flynn Nash.

Dr. Nash served with the US Navy from 1945-47. He was a graduate of University of Buffalo in 1948 and University of Buffalo Dental School in 1954. He

He was a life member of ADA, Dental Society of State of NY, and the Fourth District Dental Society where he was also Editor of the Fourth District Newsletter and was a member of the Saratoga County Dental Assoc.

He was an honorary life member of K of C Council #1735 and was past Grand Knight. He was a member Right Rev. Msgr.

Daniel F. Curtain Assembly Fourth Degree K of C, past member of Schuylerville Lions Club, Old Saratoga American Legion Post #278, former member and past President of Battenkill Country Club. He was an avid road runner and had entered and finished 16 marathons and 453 10K and 5K races. He was an usher and eucharistic minister at Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Donald J. Nash and Edward M. Nash.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Edna (Ludwig) Nash; children, John (Carol) Nash, Elizabeth (Paul) Irish, and Thomas (Eileen) Nash; granddaughters, Megan Nash and Carlee Irish; sisters, Helen Ackermann and Janet Aldous; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass was celebrated Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich with Rev. Martin Fisher, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

FIRST BAPTIST CHUCH Celebrates 225th Anniversary

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In October 2018, the First Baptist Church, Saratoga Springs’ longest serving congregation, will celebrate its 225th anniversary. To mark its anniversary, First Baptist plans to make improvements to its 1855 church building, the city’s second oldest, as well as expand its support to students in need, homeless adults, victims of domestic violence, and to the racetrack’s backstretch workers.

Earlier this month, First Baptist celebrated its historic past and bright future with a new sign showing its commitment since

MALTA ROTARY CLUB GIVES

MALTA — This month, the Malta Sunrise Rotary donated $800 to Qholaqhoe Mountain Connections (QMC), bringing its total donations to the group to $3,200 since 2014.

The QMC group focuses on educating students — mostly in high school and a few in college — from a rural, mountainous area

of northern Lesotho. Lesotho is a small, poor, landlocked country in southern Africa.

The Malta Sunrise Rotary Club meets on Thursday mornings at 7:15 in the Malta Diner at Routes 9 and 67. Guests and prospective members are always welcome to attend.

The mayor said “an avalanche of unfunded mandates” from New York State, involving expenses such as health care for village employees and workers’ compensation payments, now equals 22 percent of Ballston Spa’s $4.1 million annual budget.

Costs have been reduced as much as possible and staff is short in multiple village departments, Romano continued, even as the village’s annual payments to the state pension system for retired municipal employees have risen from $22,000 in the early 2000s to $288,000 now — or 1,200 percent.

In addition, officials may be forced to consider spending $1.2 million soon on faulty village vehicles and upgrades for water infrastructure that is nearing 50 years old.

“We can’t continue to limp along. We’re at a point now that we need to do things differently,” Romano concluded. He reported

that individual meetings were held recently with each village board member to discuss such fiscal challenges. “...WE’RE AT A POINT NOW THAT WE NEED TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY.”

“The first rule of holes is to stop digging,” offered Shaw through the cell phone. “This is not a sustainable trajectory that the village is on.”

A comprehensive review should be conducted of “systemic” fiscal issues in the village, Shaw said, especially during negotiations for the next annual budget in April and May. Trustee Stuart Hodsoll called the mayor’s presentation “really overwhelming.”

Yet Milton Planning Board Chairman Larry Woolbright, who attended the meeting on Monday and spoke briefly during the public comment portion, found a reason to believe that Romano and his fellow board members would solve the village’s financial problems.

“I’m more optimistic than I’ve been in a while,” Woolbright said.

by Larry Goodwin Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — After owning a prime piece of Broadway real estate for the better part of 50 years, Andrew Hunt says his family is willing to part with it because “we have a lot of respect” for the buyer.

Earlier this week, Fingerpaint Marketing announced its intention to purchase the property at 395 Broadway from Myron M. Hunt Inc., which is based near Buffalo and has leased it to various businesses since the 1960s.

“We’d be happy to own that for another 50 years,” Hunt said, when contacted this week for comment. He is president of the real estate firm.

demolished that building and started anew with bricks and mortar in 2000.

Since 2012, the corporate headquarters of Fingerpaint have occupied the 25,000-square-foot space. The property includes a

parking lot for more than 50 vehicles.

“It makes strategic sense for us, and I think it’s a great outcome for them,” Hunt said, admitting that 395 Broadway is the only property in Saratoga Springs that his family currently owns.

Hunt explained that the transaction with Fingerpaint is “largely under their control.”

In a statement, Fingerpaint indicated that the real estate deal is expected to be complete within six months.

Construction of a third floor is planned for the existing twostory structure along with a mix of new commercial and residential space in the parking lot, company officials said.

Bill McEllen, chief of strategy in Fingerpaint’s Saratoga Springs office, said in an email that “we are not releasing any information” regarding the purchase price.

Fingerpaint also recently bought the property located at 1 Franklin Square, which McEllen said will be utilized “to accommodate growth for additional administrative and creative conference space” after renovations.

The Franklin Square building includes two apartments that

The Fingerpaint statement reports that the company has grown from 42 employees in 2012, when annual revenues were $4.3 million, to a $45 million operation now with almost 200 employees.

In the statement, Fingerpaint Founder Ed Mitzen said: “This acquisition will ensure our longterm presence in downtown Saratoga Springs. We absolutely love our current location, and it has been a wonderful complement to all of the restaurants, bars and retail shops downtown.

“We are thrilled that we will continue to be a major player in downtown Saratoga Springs for years and years to come,” Mitzen added. “It’s a truly special place.”

Local Sales of ‘CBD’ Products Turn Brisk

by Larry Goodwin Saratoga TODAY WILTON — The Healthy Living Market and Café in the Wilton Mall, founded by Vermonters, is widely known for offering products that satisfy shoppers who share a certain level of environmental awareness.

Amanda Washburn, the store’s retail buyer for wellness items, indicated this week that she has seen a rapid increase in sales of a relatively

new line of eco-friendly products.

Most of the products contain “CBD,” a non-psychoactive compound that develops naturally in the seedless flowers of cannabis plants. The acronym is short for the scientific term “cannabidiol.”

“It really does work miracles for people, and I’m glad people are opening their eyes to it,” Washburn said.

claim they are using CBD products to treat a wide array of physical ailments, ranging from anxiety to skin conditions to seizures.

She said local nurses and doctors are even quietly recommending CBD products to their patients.

But Washburn also acknowledged that any claims related to the effectiveness of CBD are not “clinically proven.”

“There’s so many different things that it’s said to help with,” she offered, as she described the CBD products kept in a locked glass case in the supplement section of the market. “It’s crazy how big it’s become and how quickly.”

The CBD products available at Healthy Living (some rather

pungent) range in price from $29.99 to $149.99. There are topicals that can be rubbed directly on skin; bath salts; oils that can be ingested by a dropper or simply added to food; and a CBD tea.

Washburn explained that the store is seeking to expand its selection of CBD-infused food for pets as well.

She said there have been steady sales of the $150 bottles of “Charlotte’s Web,” a highly concentrated CBD oil named after a Colorado girl who experienced dramatic seizures.

In 2013, the girl was featured in a televised documentary produced by Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

At present, Washburn added, most of the CBD products are

manufactured and tested in states that allow more cannabis growing, such as Colorado and Vermont.

In New York, state agriculture officials are in the process of expanding an “industrial hemp” program that may result in more localized CBD production.

In addition, several registered companies in New York sell CBD products through the state’s “medical marijuana” program, according to Jill Montag, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health.

When asked to comment specifically on the increase in sales of CBD products at Healthy Living and elsewhere, Montag explained that all of them “are outside the purview of the state’s medical marijuana program and may be of unknown content and quality.”

Last week, Old Saratoga Mercantile owner Christina Myers accepted her first shipment of a topical CBD balm. It is produced by a Vermont company called Luce Farm, which also offers edible CBD-infused honey and oils.

“The people are digging it.

They’re buying it,” Myers admitted.

Myers explained that she first encountered CBD products in a chiropractor’s office. She is still in the process of securing constant supplies for customers who frequent her small grocery market on Route 29 west of Schuylerville.

A typical CBD balm “relaxes” parts of the body where it is applied, Myers explained, providing more long-term relief than the “hemp” rubs that she already sells for pain.

“Honestly, it’s going to women over 50,” Myers said of the new CBD balm. “They’re all complaining of inflammation.”

SCRAPING THE SKY IN THE SPA CITY

by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Sustainable Saratoga will host a community forum on Tuesday which takes a closer look at city building heights with an eye on retaining Saratoga Springs’ character and charm.

The presentation takes place 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Empire State College, 2 Union Ave., in room 126.

Scheduled speakers include: George Jacquemart of BFJ

Planning, and a panel discussion with local developer Sonny Bonacio of Bonacio Construction Inc., local architect Matt Hurff of Frost Hurff Architects, Doug Kerr, chair of Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Advocacy Committee and Kate Maynard, principal planner for the city of Saratoga Springs.

Building height has played a role in recently proposed city developments. Three years ago, the City Center Authority sought a variance to build outside of allowable height requirements

because the structure would cast a shadow across the solar panels of the adjacent Mouzon House restaurant. Currently, a pair of six-story hotels – one adjacent to the Adelphi Hotel, the other next to the Rip Van Dam in the Broadway/ Washington Street downtown area - as well as proposed multi-use structures on West Avenue and on South Broadway, are being explored.

and approximately 170 feet tall, according to Emporis, a global provider of building information which collects data on buildings of high public and economic value. Confederate Flags Fixed to Racing Museum Jockeys SARATOGA SPRINGS — Early Tuesday morning, city police were alerted that more than a dozen lawn jockeys outside the National Museum of Racing on Union Avenue were draped in small confederate flags.

Video surveillance indicates the incident took place at around 1:46 a.m. Tuesday and that five individuals were observed engaging in the act.

In the surveillance video, five shadowy figures briskly walk along Union Avenue in front of the statues. At least two of the people are seen unfurling what are alleged to be small confederate flags, and fix them to the statues.

The incident is under investigation and none of the lawn jockeys sustained damage, police said.

150 Gallons Planned for Local Fundraiser

by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY SCHUYLERVILLE — One thousand one-of-a-kind bowls have been crafted and five area chefs are busily comingling spices in preparation of Saturday’s 7th annual Chili Bowl at the Saratoga Clay Arts Center.

The five chefs, each of whom showcase their culinary talents at area restaurants, are making 30 gallons of chili each.

“That’s 150 gallons in total” says Jill Fishon-Kovachick, who founded Saratoga Clay Arts Center in 2011.

What does 150 gallons of chili look like? “I have no idea,” she says, with a laugh, “but we’ll need it.”

The event has grown in popularity in each of its first six years and attracted approximately 700 people in 2017. The cost of admission: $2, or the donation of two

non-perishable food items. Samples of chili will be distributed at the event and a vote-for-the-best chili competition will be held. Defending champion Pat Brown of the Brook Tavern will face competing chili chefs Jonathan Quinn of Osteria Danny, Dave Zuka of Ravenous Creperie, Michele Morris of Scallions and Brian Bowden of R&R Kitchen and bar.

More than 1,000 one-of-akind hand-crafted chili bowls will be available for the event.

The bowls usually retail for $25 to $100. For this event, organizers say: fill the bowl, eat the chili, and keep the bowl for $20.

“We’ll also be raffling off one of my pieces,” says Fishon-Kovachick, a ceramic artist and collector who first began working with clay at the age of 11, after attending an educational summer camp at Buck’s Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp in Connecticut.

A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit the Wilton Food Pantry, and To Life! The latter is a local organization that serves a 10-county area and is tasked to educate the community about breast cancer detection, treatments and related health matters, and to provide support services to breast cancer patients, caregivers, family and friends.

The Wilton Food Pantry provides the equivalent of 30,000 meals annually. More

than one-third of those served by the pantry on Ballard Road are children. The highest nonperishable food items on its list include: peanut butter, canned fruit, bottles of 100 percent fruit juice, juice boxes and canned tuna or salmon.

Advance registration, with specified reserve time slots, may be made online at saratogaclayarts. org. Those registering in advance may also select and pre-pay online for bowls and simply pick them

up when attending the event. Lastminute walk-ins to the center are also welcome without pre-registration.

The event takes place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27. Saratoga Clay Arts Center is located at 167 Hayes Road, Schuylerville.

Robonics Reggae Band, known for their warm weather inspired rhythms and quirky steel-drum renditions of tunes like the theme from “The Godfather” and “Mission Impossible,” will provide live entertainment.

For high school seniors, the training program is the length of their senior year and is a half day program. Students will attend the program like they would if they were in a career tech training program and in the second half of the year they work directly with the HR department at

GlobalFoundries regarding job qualifications. This program is also available for adults and is a six-week program, which BOCES is hoping to kick off this spring.

“For the adult program, they are self-funded but we’re working through some grant opportunities to off-set that, so tuition may be minimal or free,” Dragone explained.

“Regionally, there are three strong work-force investment boards that work with adults looking for forward training or

unemployed adults looking for new career opportunities, as well as collaboration with the chambers and the community colleges. We have our own adult education programs so it’s working with the agencies that engage the adult population to make sure that they are aware of the opportunity,” he stated.

While starting salaries remain to be determined, it all depends on what the student qualifies at and what the industry is offering at that time.

“Even at entry-level positions

in this field, it can be very lucrative and a great career opportunity,” Dragone said.

Interest in the program has been great and seniors from 23 school districts will begin to enroll in the coming weeks. The student program begins in September 2018.

“GlobalFoundries is a great partner, they’re allowing site visits and tour opportunities from all of our school districts, so they can understand what this field is about. This is really the evolution

of career and technical training and you’re seeing it in advanced manufacturing, you’re seeing it in clean technologies. As training continues to grow, as technologies continue to grow, it’s expanded from the usual portfolio, which is also still in high demand, of our traditional career and technology fields, to this evolution of career and technical training that includes all of the hightech industries as well,” he explained.

Students will be trained in automation, valve operation, electronics, and will learn how to investigate delays in the manufacturing process.

“This is one program, of hopefully many more to come, that we’re working on where as a region, we can look to see how there can be strong collaboration to strengthen opportunities for students,” Dragone stated.

The Academy of Lifelong Learning HMT Play Fundraiser SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Academy for Lifelong Learning is raising money by selling tickets to the Saturday, February 10 opening of the madcap comedy play Inspecting Carol but you must purchase your tickets through the Academy by January 31. Home Made Theater at the Spa Little Theater is in the Saratoga Spa State Park. Half of all ticket sales through the Academy is being donated to A.L.L. A madcap comedy, Inspecting Carol creates a theater experience that is anything but show business as usual. Take a seat for a laughout-loud razzle dazzle of funny characters in this hilarious farce.

SCHUYLERVILLE — Madeline Nevins, a Schuylerville High School graduate, has been placed on the Dean’s List at the Sage College of Albany for the Fall 2017 semester. Dean’s List students obtain a semester grade point average of at least 3.50 after completing a course load of 12 credits or more.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Lions Club has expanded their range and number of scholarship offerings to high school seniors graduating this spring. Now being offered: Two $5,000 academic scholarships for students planning to attend a four-year accredited institution; Two $2,500 academic scholarships for students planning to attend a two-year accredited institution; One $2,500 vocational/ technical education scholarship for students planning to attend an accredited or licensed post high school program; Five $1,000 scholarships to Leo Club members.

Saratoga Builders Association to Offer $1,000 Scholarship SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Builders Association, Inc. will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship to one student in 2018. This scholarship is available to students planning to pursue a construction industry education.

The scholarship is open to any high school senior or college undergraduate in Saratoga County planning to pursue a construction education at a two or four-year college or students who would like to purchase tools for employment in construction. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, must demonstrate current or past involvement in the construction field, including classes taken in high school or college, to be eligible. Each applicant must also submit a high school or college transcript or list of construction classes taken along with a short essay describing why they are interested in a construction industry career and what events led to this decision. Applications must be postmarked on or before April 1, 2018. Only the first 25 completed applications will be accepted so early submission is encouraged.

HOW CAN YOU use the foods grown and raised by local farmers at the coldest time of year to create meals that are healthy, warm, and pleasing to the palate?

“Bake an apple,” recommends Christine Gaud, of Saratoga Apple.

Gaud cuts out the core of an apple and fills it with a dab of butter and some nuts. She places the fruit in her wood-fired oven and lets it bake until it softens.

“Sometimes, it takes 15 minutes, sometimes 20,” she says.

You don’t need a wood-fired

oven to do this. Following Gaud’s advice, I baked a Cortland apple at 350 degrees until it was soft to the touch. After it had cooled, I used a spoon to scoop out the inner flesh, which blended beautifully into a soft and silky custard-like concoction with the butter and chopped walnuts I added in.

“Load up on probiotics,” suggests Kelley Hillis, of Puckers’ Gourmet Pickles. As she notes, probiotics – which are abundant in such foods as her naturally fermented pickled vegetables – help strengthen the immune system, which is vital to staying healthy through the winter. On top of that, the pickles taste tangy and crunchy.

While pickles often are regarded as a condiment, Hillis suggests adding them to sandwiches, tacos, or salads or eating them as a vegetable side.

they like to cut up my dill sours, for instance, and add them to a chicken or a tuna sandwich,” says Hillis.

And there’s soup. “Healthy and easy,” says Jennifer Czelusniak, of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service, who was serving samples of potato leek soup last Saturday.

Czelusniak notes that planning a soup as part of a weekly menu means you don’t have to worry

about what to use. “You can make a soup with almost any vegetable, a little oil or butter and some broth.”

Baked Apples

• Serves 4 • Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS * Find these Ingredients at the Farmers’ Market!

• 4 large baking apples*, such as Honeycrisp • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter, softened

• 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Wash and core apples, leaving enough of the core at the base of the apple to contain the filling.

3. Combine the butter, cinnamon, and chopped nuts in a small bowl. Roll log shapes of the mixture and press enough into each apple to fill the core.

4. Fill a 2-quart baking dish with about 3/4 cup water, or enough to cover the bottom. Place the apples upright in the dish. Bake until the apples are soft and the filling is browned, 1 hour.

YOU’RE BAKING ME CRAZY

my Foodie Friends.

The winter months often times bring us “snow days” from work and school. Snow day: you know what that means? It’s time to bake some sweet goodies with your kids.

There are standard baking essentials that are needed to make your favorite baked treats.

Cooking and baking is really enjoyable if you can find recipes that are inspiring and delicious.

Flipping through a cookbook, you’ll find that most cooking and baking recipes use precise measurements.

Portioning ingredients in a dish balances flavors to create the besttasting recipes. Dry measuring cups, liquid measuring cups, and measuring spoons are three of the fundamental kitchen tools that will help you measure your ingredients. The best measuring cups and spoons make it easy to

portion your ingredients and wash up after you’re done cooking or baking. Dry measuring cups are important kitchen tools to have in your drawers. The best measuring cup sets consist of five different measuring cups, ranging from 1/3 cup to 1 cup for measuring dry goods. You’ll find that dry measuring cups are made from many different materials, including plastic and stainless steel. Both of these types of materials can be placed in the dishwasher, which makes it easier to clean up after you’re done cooking or baking.

These materials are used in measuring cups because they will not react with food and then can even by placed in the refrigerator or freezer if you need to cool ingredients. If you are baking, make sure that you clean out your measuring ups after each use so that you don’t contaminate any of your ingredients. A well-stocked kitchen has both dry and liquid measuring cups. There is a slight difference in volume between dry and wet ingredients, so it’s important that you have both styles of measuring cups. The best liquid measuring cup sets have three different sizes, ranging from 1 cup to 4 cups of liquid. A lot of liquid measuring cups have spouts on the end, which makes them easy to pour into your recipe. Most liquid measuring cups have handles so you can transport them across the

kitchen. This is especially helpful if you are incorporating warm liquid into your recipe. The majority of liquid measuring cups are made from plastic or glass, so they can go right in the dishwasher alongside your dry measuring cups.

Aside from measuring cups, measuring spoons are also a musthave in your kitchen. A standard set of measuring spoons is great if you are baking in the kitchen because you can use the right portion of baking soda and baking powder to get the perfect texture for your best sweet treats. Measuring spoons can measure both liquid and dry ingredients so they’re super handy to have in the kitchen.

Batter • ¼ cup butter • ¼ cup vegetable oil • ½ cup granulated sugar • 1/3 cup brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 1½ tsp. baking powder • ¼ tsp. baking soda • 1-1¼ tsp. ground nutmeg, to taste

• ¾ tsp. salt • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 2 2/3 cups unbleached All-Purpose Flour or Organic All-Purpose Flour • 1 cup milk Topping • 3 Tbsp. melted butter • 3 Tbsp. Cinnamon-Sugar (careful, very lickable)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a standard muffin tin, or line with paper or silicone muffin cups, and grease the cups with non-stick vegetable oil spray; this will ensure that they peel off the muffins nicely.

2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, cream together the butter, vegetable oil, and sugars till smooth.

3. Add the eggs, beating to combine.

4. Stir in the baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla.

5. Stir the flour into the butter mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour and making sure everything is thoroughly combined.

6. Spoon the batter evenly into muffin tin, filling the cups nearly full.

7. Bake the muffins for 15 to 17 minutes, or until they’re a pale golden brown and a cake tester inserted into the middle of one of the center muffins comes out clean.

8. Remove them from the oven, and let them cool for a couple of minutes, or until you can handle them. While they’re cooling, melt the butter for the topping (this is easily done in the microwave.)

9. Use a pastry brush, I like silicone, to paint the top of each muffin with the butter, then sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar. Or simply dip the tops of muffins into the melted butter, and then roll in the cinnamon-sugar.

10. Serve warm, or cool on a rack and wrap airtight.

Store for a day or so at room temperature.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Opening Reception of “PROTEST: Street Photography of the 1960s and 70s by Nicholas Amplo and Dave Tyson,” will take place 3 – 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Spring Street Gallery.

SPAC TO HOST QUINTET OF COUNTRY MUSIC CONCERTS Promoter Live Nation has announced five country music concerts that will be staged at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center this summer, and sales of a “2018 Country Megaticket” that will allow fans to attend all five shows.

The concerts include: Keith Urban with Kelsea Ballerini on June 27; Rascal Flatts on July 7; Jason Aldean with Luke Combs and Lauren Alaina on July 15; Dierks Bentley with Brothers Osborne and Lanco on Aug. 5, and Luke Bryan with Jon Pardi and Morgan Wallen on Aug. 19.

The Megaticket sale begins Friday, Jan. 26 and goes through Feb. 24, and is as follows: Gold: $695 – Secure the same reserved seat to all five shows in sections 1-7 or 15-18 plus get one premier parking pass per show, per pair. Silver: $450 – secure the same reserved seat to all five shows in sections 8-14 or 19-30; Lawn: $159 – spend an evening on the lawn with a ticket to all five shows. Feminism in the Digital Age: Tang Museum Hosts Innovate Thinkers Discussion Monday

ALBANY — After staging a series of performances in early 2017, Celebrating David Bowie returns this year with a brandnew Bowie show spanning his entire career with an appearance Tuesday, Feb. 13 at The Egg. More than just a mere salute, Celebrating David Bowie keeps Bowie’s music alive with musicians who worked closely with him throughout his career and other top musicians greatly influenced by him. Bowie touring and recording keyboardist Mike Garson, who collaborated with Bowie for longer than any other

player, will be heading up the CdB band for the North American leg, which features guitarist Earl Slick, guitarist and previous Bowie band leader Gerry Leonard (A Reality Tour), vocalist Bernard Fowler, and Bowie’s Let’s Dance/ Serious Moonlight Tour bassist Carmine Rojas.

Also joining the tour will be CdB 2017 standout Fishbone’s Angelo Moore and 2017 Grammy nominee Gaby Moreno as well as special guests and other former Bowie band members who will make surprise appearances along the way.

The large rotating ensemble with world class multiinstrumentalists changing song to song will perform a show highlighting elements that influenced Bowie and that in turn Bowie influenced: pop culture experimentation, art, fashion, science and futurism.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A discussion about present-day feminism and the implications of technology will take place 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29 at the Tang Teaching Museum, on the campus of Skidmore College.

Tang Curator-at-Large Isolde Brielmaier will lead a group of innovative thinkers in the discussion titled “#feminism?: Activism & Agitation in the Digital Age.” In recent years, many have argued that digital media has paved the way for “Fourth Wave Feminism” by offering key platforms for people to come together and organize hashtag campaigns and grassroots movements.

Social media, specifically, has allowed people to share stories, maintain a safe space in which to define feminism by working through urgent issues, and enact social and cultural exchanges with others from around the world.

Joining Brielmaier will be Kimberly Drew - writer, curator, activist and social media manager at The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Natalie Frank, an artist

whose paintings and drawings revolve around women’s bodies, desires, and narratives; and Amy Richards, a writer, producer, and organizer. Recently, Richards produced the Emmy nominated series WOMAN for Viceland and curated a series of talks to accompany Annie Leibovitz’s traveling exhibit WOMEN. “#feminism?: Activism & Agitation in the Digital Age” is part of the Accelerator Series at the Tang. The dynamic conversation series on big ideas and big issues seeks to find new entry points into discussions that veer from traditional paths.

As an open and inclusive public forum for dialogue, exchange, and questioning, the Accelerator Series ignites a collective sense of intellectual curiosity and fosters thoughtful engagement with a deeper understanding of compelling issues that have the potential to spark radical transformations.

SPAC Presents New “Live at the Jazz Bar” Winter Series

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new “Live at the Jazz Bar” Winter Series will feature three free evenings dedicated to Latin, swing and ballroom music and dancing, beginning Feb. 8.

“Following the enthusiastic response that we received from our first winter ‘Live at the Jazz Bar’ event dedicated to swing, we are delighted to launch this new series celebrating a variety of music and dance genres,” SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol said, in

a statement. “We encourage social dancers, live music enthusiasts and newcomers alike to join us for exhilarating, entertaining evenings that give us a taste of the summer months ahead.”

Saratoga Automobile Museum to Host Sunday Brunch SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Automobile Museum will host a Sunday mimosa brunch during the broadcast of a live stream of the Rolex 24 at Daytona’s final laps.

The event will take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, 110 Avenue of the Pines. Tickets are $48 per person and must be purchased in advance.

The auto museum also announced it has been chosen as recipient of a grant of $5,500 for their distracted driving initiative from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region.

The funds will be used to bolster ongoing efforts by the museum to cut down on distracted driving.

Rock Climbers to Gather at The Edge for The Lead Revival Sport Open

by Lori Mahan Saratoga TODAY HALFMOON — On Saturday, Jan. 27, The Edge Halfmoon rock climbing gym will be holding their first annual The Lead Revival Sport Open competition. The event will last the whole day, beginning at 10 a.m. and running until 8 p.m.; top professional climbers, including Gansevoort’s Vincent Sablich, will compete for $10,000 in cash prizes and $2,500 in physical prizes.

“We’ve got a number of the strongest climbers coming in from all over the country. There are a couple of different disciplines in climbing; there is bouldering, which is no ropes, and 15 feet off the ground; there’s league climbing which is you’re clipping rope as you go up, which for us is 40 feet; and so these guys will have three routes in the qualifying round to try and get their best scores on, and then whoever gets the best scores in those three climbs, the top eight go onto a final, which is one round, no previews, just walk up, look at it, and go,” Adam Catalano, director of The Edge Halfmoon, explained the competition.

While this event is not associated with USA Climbing, the same competitors will compete in the same event.

“There are a number of bouldering events across the country, some of them very big, and they draw the biggest names.

However, there are very few of these sport climbing league competitions. There is a national event in March that I help set up for last year and we didn’t really have too much of an idea of how people were sport climbing because there were no other events we could look back at. So, I said, ‘I want to make an event prior to that national competition so people can test their skills and see how they’re doing before they actually go to the nationals,’’ Catalano said.

The Edge Halfmoon is also putting on this competition with help from Love 146, “an organization that fights human trafficking, specifically sex trafficking with children. I know a number of employees there and we felt like the climbing community would be interested in helping out in that realm. We wanted to bring awareness to that,” Catalano explained.

So far, 25 climbers have signed up for the competition and Catalano is hoping for more since

the entry fee is only $60.

Membership at The Edge Halfmoon varies, ranging from an annual fee of $500 and one month is $60.

Saratoga Spring Hockey Results SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Friday, Jan. 19 the Blue Streaks took on the Ithaca Little Reds in a non-league game at the Weibel Ice Rink. The Blue Streaks defeated the Little Reds, 3-1. Starting off the game strong, the Little Reds scored the first and only goal in the first period by Michael Sornberger. For Saratoga Springs, Mack Ogden scored the first goal in the second period with an assist by Nick Guzi and Ryan Seales; Joe Amodio scored the second goal with assists from Wyatt Matthews and Xavier Clark, followed by Matt Shamberger with an assist from Charlie Leary.

Saratoga’s goalie, Brad Hippsley, had 31 saves and Ithaca’s goalie, Billy Block, had 14 saves.

On Saturday, Jan. 20, the Blue Streaks took on Pelham Memorial Pelicans in a non-league game at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Saratoga and Pelham tied, 2-2.

The Pelicans scored the first goal, Michael Goldman made the move with an assist from Jonah Kraftowitz, in the second period Pelham Connor Evans scored their final goal with an assist from Andrew Shulzhenko. For the Blue Streaks, Gary Blanchard scored the first goal with an assist from Ryan Jones, and Zac Ogden scored the second goal. Saratoga goalie Hippsley had 29 saves and Pelham goalie Liam Ronan had 19 saves.

Saratoga Springs Alpine Ski Team SARATOGA SPRINGS — In the first female race of the Shenendehowa Invitational on Monday, Jan. 15, Saratoga skier

Shannon Kelly ranked number five out of 63 racers with a time of 1:06.40.

In the second female race, Kelly took fifth out of 58 racers with a time of 1:07.52. For the male race, Tyler Munter came in sixth out of 63 racers with a time of 1:04.33 in race number one and in race number two, Andrew Zilka placed seventh out of 55 racers with a time of 1:04.33.

In the first female race of the Glens Falls Invitational on Wednesday, Jan. 17, Shannon Kelly ranked number one overall for the Saratoga girls’ team and Atticus Connell ranked number one on the boys’ end. Kelly ranked number eight overall out of 47 racers and Connell ranked number nine out of 47, in the individuals.

Kelsey Briddell Named to National Development Team SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kelsey Briddell, a Saratoga Springs graduate and a biology major at UAlbany, has been selected for the National Development Team for field hockey.

“It’s extremely difficult to make this team, we’re so very proud of Kelsey and her hard work and dedication,” said Bryan Briddell, Kelsey’s father.

Saratoga Firefighters 62 - Berkshire Hathaway Blake, Realtors 50 The Firefighters continued their winning streak with a 62 to 50 win over BHHS. After falling behind at half-time the Firemen came on strong in the second half.

Gaven Planasky came back into the game after hurting his ankle in the opening minutes of the game and had a team high 20 points in the win.

The Realtors got 13 points from Jake Graham along with Seth Koval and Cameron Fitzpatrick seven points and four points respectively.

Livestreams are available 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with extended hour as the expected foaling date approaches, at www.foalpatrol.com.

Hockey Night in Saratoga SARATOGA SPRINGS — For the second year in a row, Skidmore College Hockey and Saratoga High School Varsity Hockey will team up for Hockey Night in Saratoga to support a local charity. Dual games will be played by both squads on Feb. 2, at the Saratoga Ice Rink facility on Weibel Avenue with funds raised to support local youth hockey.

The Skidmore Thoroughbreds host the University of Massachusetts in a New England Hockey Conference game at 7 p.m. in the Weibel Ave. Rink, while the Blue Streaks play rival LaSalle Cadets at 5:45 p.m. in Vernon Arena.

There is no admission charge for the Skidmore game and a minimal

charge for the Saratoga game with all of the proceeds benefiting the SYHI Scholarship Program.

Saratoga Stars SARATOGA SPRINGS — A service project of the Saratoga Springs Lions Club, the Saratoga Stars ice skating program brings together differentlyabled children with volunteers and expert ice skaters to provide a fun and instructional ice skating program at the Saratoga Springs Ice Rinks, 30 Weibel Avenue, Saratoga Springs, New York.

Saratoga Stars is a free program and all equipment is provided.

The program runs January through March on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Ice times vary per the schedule and culminates with a themed Grand Finale Show showcasing the children’s’ learned ice skating skills.
