WILTON — A large multifamily housing project recently given the thumbs-up to proceed is anticipated to offer hundreds of new residential units as early as the summer of 2026 in the town of Wilton.

The People Behind the Portraits

Hanging at the top of the main stairs at Brookside Museum is a pair of portraits. With them is a framed brooch which contains locks of hair. These portraits are of Thomas McDonnell and his wife, Frances Halsey McDonnell, and were painted in 1852 and 1853 respectively by John G. Taggart, a New York City trained artist with a studio in Saratoga Springs. In her portrait, Frances is wearing the brooch that now hangs beside her.

But who are they? That is the question their great great great grandson and his wife, who gave us the paintings, wanted to know.

Thomas, who was born on 28th Feb, 1795, and his younger brother Robert, arrived in New York City from Ireland in 1816. By 1823, Robert was in Saratoga Springs, opening a store selling groceries and liquor in a prominent position in town, on Broadway, opposite the United States hotel. In 1827, Thomas joined his brother, became a joint owner, selling “a great assortment of groceries”, and later taking sole ownership in 1831. Over the following years, the brothers owned a succession of stores, together, or with other people.

According to the New York Daily Herald, early in the morning of June 4th, 1846, a devastating fire, “doubtless the work of an incendiary” broke out in the offices of the Saratoga Sentinel. Although “the capacious reservoirs of the United States Hotel” across Broadway were made available to the firemen, six buildings were burnt, including one owned by Thomas McDonnell. This building was occupied by a grocery store, McDonnell and Bennett, and, on the 2nd floor, by a billiard hall. His property was insured for $2000, though damage was estimated to be $3000.

But Thomas was still doing alright. The 1855 census lists his house as worth $4500, and his neighbors at the time were Samuel Root and Gideon Putnam, both prosperous

gentlemen. By 1860, the value of his real estate was $12000 with personal property valued at $15000.

Thomas and Frances married on Nov 23rd, 1828 at the Vandewater Street Church in New York City. They had 5 children, and it is the children’s hair contained in the brooch. Two children, Thomas and Maria, died young. The eldest child, Jane, married Frederick L. Root, a neighbor from Saratoga Springs. A son, James S., died, at 30 years of age, in 1870. Interestingly, Thomas’s will, written in 1864, left his estate for the use of his wife, and, after her death, to be divided between his daughters; James was not mentioned. James, together with young Thomas and Maria, is buried with their parents in Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs.

The second child, Frances, married a Greenfield lawyer, John T. Wentworth on October 4th, 1852 at her father’s house. She was described as a “beautiful and accomplished young lady”. She was certainly accomplished. Frances and her husband moved to Chicago, IL, and then to Wisconsin, finishing in Racine, WI where John worked in multiple legal positions, including as a circuit court judge. Frances threw herself into causes, including being an early advocate for the temperance movement, and a very strong proponent for women’s suffrage. In 1909, in response to a request for names for a petition to Congress in support of the Federal Suffrage Amendment, “Mrs. Wentworth, over eighty years of age … obtained 1,000 names”.

Robert and Thomas’s

seemingly rapid rise to wealth in Saratoga Springs suggests that the brothers were not poor Irish immigrants. According to a Wisconsin biographical note on his grandson, Thomas was Presbyterian Irish, of Scottish descent, from Portaferry, a small coastal town in County Down, Northern Ireland. After arrival in NYC, he went to Charleston, SC, from there to Syracuse, NY, and then to Saratoga Springs, where he stayed until his death. The Charleston connection is not as unusual as it may appear. From 1750-1820 a wave of Scots Presbyterian Irish traveled to Charleston and frequently these immigrants were from wealthy backgrounds, though were probably not eldest sons.

Thomas died on February 22nd, 1866. His death announcement in the Saratogian describes him a gentleman who had “won a high reputation for integrity, promptness, order and general business capacity”, but, more importantly than that, “[h]e had a warm heart [and] his sympathies were generous”, and “his tenderness often spoke when his lips were silent”.

Frances died on December 1st, 1876. Her death notice describes “her ready sympathy and benevolence, her cordial greetings and friendship, and her genuine integrity of character, [which] secured to her affection and respect”.

Thomas and Frances appear to have been kind, generous, hardworking people. We are proud and honored to have their portraits hanging in Brookside Museum. If anyone would like to see them, please let us know.

Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation 2024 Historic Homes Tour May 11

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, along with Honorary Co-Chairs Rachel Dunn and Bill McEllen, hosts the 2024 Historic Homes Tour on Saturday, May 11.

The event held between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. offers the rare opportunity to see the interiors of private historic homes and buildings in the North Broadway neighborhood of Saratoga Springs.

Private residences on North Broadway, Greenfield Avenue,

and Woodlawn Avenue will be featured. The tour will also include the former Masonic Lodge at 687 North Broadway as the “Rehabilitation-in-Progress.”

The virtual segment of the tour features four buildings on North Broadway, three of which are on the in-person tour, as well as two other properties, including 65 Phila Street.

In addition to the tour, the Foundation is hosting two educational programs on

Saturday, May 11.

For the Breakfast & Buildings program “Woodlawn Park,” Charlie Kuenzel will explore Woodlawn Park, today the site of the Skidmore College campus. Learn about the former immense estate of Judge Henry Hilton that included a mansion, several cottages, stables, miles of carriage trails, a lake, a boat house, a racetrack with a grandstand, and more. Saratoga Automobile Museum Announces the 22nd Annual Spring Auto Show in Saratoga Spa State Park

—The Saratoga Automobile Museum announced its Spring Auto Show is set to take place amidst the backdrop of Saratoga Spa State Park on May 11 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

New Beginnings at Maplewood Parkway Methodist Church

SOUTH GLENS FALLS —

Maplewood Parkway Methodist Church of 15 Maplewood Parkway, South Glens Falls is officially beginning as a new church. Formerly known as the South Glens Falls United Methodist (SGFUMC). SGFUMC disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church. MPMC has affiliated with the Global Methodist Church with a focus more on Bible-based worship.

Gathering time is at 9:45 a.m. with Sunday worship beginning at 10 a.m. Prior to Sunday worship, there is a 9 a.m. gathering called First Hour, where those attending meet in prayer and take a first look into the Scripture of the day.

A Bible Study group meets on Tuesday mornings at 9:30, and a Prayer Group gathers Wednesday mornings at 9:30. A Sunday school is available for children during the worship service.

Robert A. (Bob) Stokes

SARATOGA SPRINGS

– Robert A. (Bob) Stokes, a visionary leader in business, community, and public service, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on April 24, 2024.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1942, Bob was raised “in the shadow of Fenway Park.” He often said his lifelong devotion to the Boston Red Sox helped form his willingness to take on tough challenges and the endurance to see them through. He earned his Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts. After graduating from Colgate University with a degree in History in 1964, he married Julia Snelham Stokes, whom he met on a blind date while she was a student at Elmira College. They moved to the Capital Region, where he was hired as management with New York Telephone Co., the predecessor of Verizon. He spent the next 30

years managing the company’s plant and business offices while implementing strategies to build facilities in fast-growing areas including Saratoga County.

The County’s community infrastructure is infused with Bob’s nearly 60 years of influence and quiet, determined vision. His relentless practicality, and “done right, on time and under budget,” guided Bob’s oversight of a multitude of volunteer projects. When Bob and Julie moved to Saratoga Springs in the 1970s, he began serving on citizens’ planning committees. As the first chair of the Community Development Committee in Saratoga – he was proud to open Fire Station 2 on West Avenue. He went on to serve on numerous school redistricting committees, and when the Presbyterian Church on Broadway burned in 1976, Bob chaired the Building Committee, acquiring St Peter’s Convent on Circular Street and Park Place for the new structure. After moving to the Town of Greenfield in 1979, Bob was appointed to the Greenfield Planning Board, later becoming Chair. He was elected to the Town Board in 1993 and Supervisor in 1995. Bob held public office for the next 10 years, serving as Greenfield’s Supervisor and Chair of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors. He enjoyed building a solid financial base for the town, expanding Greenfield’s Town Hall and was committed to providing services

to support managed growth like quality roads and parks. At the County level, he was proud of having proposed and funded the first Saratoga County Open Space Committee and grants in 2003.

He found a way to teach others in his retirement. He served as a volunteer at the Saratoga Auto Museum and had a special passion as a docent for the National Park Service at the Saratoga National Historic Park. Stokes would share his historical insights with friends and visitors. As a board member of the Friends of the Saratoga Battlefield, he helped lead the design, fundraising, and construction of the panoramic Saratoga Sword Surrender Site, expanding the boundaries of the historic seminal battlefield. He was a master of Trivial Pursuit, especially in the yellow “history” category, and waged epic games of Risk with his daughters and grandson. A lifelong interest in cars led to the restoration of several 1940s and 1950s British MG “T” series sports cars. He delighted in showing them at car shows, and with Julie, received numerous regional and national awards, including one of the Antique Automobile Club of America’s most prestigious honors.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Julia Snelham Stokes, his daughters Lynn Stokes of Saratoga Springs, Jennifer Stokes of Denver, Colorado, and his grandchildren Mary Elizabeth Andrews of Monks Corner, South Carolina, and Dylan Stokes Crowe of Denver,

Colorado. He is also survived by his extended family Linda Snelham Moore, Thomas Snelham, Courtney Snelham Rhodes, Peter Snelham, Eliza Moore, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Marion Stokes and son Edward Stokes.

A special thank you to the friends, family, and caregivers who have provided ongoing support during Bob’s palliative care.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic incident call on Manchester Drive in the town of Halfmoon on April 21. Investigation into the matter led to the arrest of Julia H. Kim (age 33) of Halfmoon, who was charged with assault in the 2nd degree (class D felony) and criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree (class A misdemeanor).

Kim is accused of causing physical injury to a person known to her by striking them to the head with a frying pan. She was arraigned before the Honorable Joseph V. Fodera in the Halfmoon Town Court and released on her own recognizance pending further action in the matter.

-The Sheriff’s Office received a call of a domestic incident on April 20, that reportedly occurred on N.Y.S. Route 29 in the town of Galway. Investigation into the matter led to the arrest of Jose C. Sartin (age 30) of Middle Grove, who was charged with robbery in the 3rd degree (class D felony), and assault in

the 3rd degree (class A misdemeanor). Sartin is accused of striking another person to the facial area resulting in physical injury and of forcibly stealing property from that person. He was arraigned before the Honorable Timothy M. Brown in the Milton Town Court and released on his own recognizance pending further action in the matter.

-The Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call on Howe Road in the town of Corinth on March 30. Investigation into the matter led to the arrest on April 20 of Samuel E. Paquin (age 60) of Greenfield, who was charged with criminal mischief in the 2nd degree (class D felony) and reckless endangerment in the 2nd degree (class A misdemeanor). Paquin is accused of intentionally ramming another person’s vehicle with his own resulting in damage in an amount that exceeded $1,500. He is also accused of recklessly engaging in conduct that created a substantial risk of serious physical injury to another person. He was ordered to be released on an appearance ticket by the Honorable Michael T.

-On Feb. 20, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a stabbing call involving a 16-yearold victim on Redfield Park in the town of Clifton Park. Investigation into the incident identified two adolescent male offenders and an adult male as having participated in the stabbing.

The two were each charged with assault in the 1st degree and gang assault in the 1st degree (class B felonies). Both were arraigned and released to the custody of their guardians pending further action in the matter.

The adult male, Coray A. Marrero (age 19) of Queens, NY, was charged with the same offenses as the juveniles as well as robbery in the 2nd degree (class C felony). Marrero was arrested in Queens by the NYPD on separate charges and turned over to the Sheriff’s Office on April 19. He was arraigned before the Honorable Timothy M. Brown and remanded to the Saratoga County Jail in lieu of bail,

bond, or partially secured bond pending further action in the matter.

The victim was transported to Albany Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery for potentially life-threatening injuries.

During the course of the investigation into the stabbing, it was discovered that the incident was in retaliation for a robbery that had occurred at the Walmart in the town of Halfmoon on Feb. 13. It is alleged that during this incident, a juvenile male was forced into a vehicle and robbed at gunpoint.

As a result of this investigation, Tyler J. Reed (age 20) of Schenectady, one adolescent male offender, and one juvenile male offender were charged with

robbery in the 1st degree and kidnapping in the 2nd degree (class B felonies). One of the charged persons was the stabbing victim in the Clifton Park incident.

Reed was arraigned before the Honorable Katherine Suchocki in the Halfmoon Town Court on Feb. 28, and remanded to the Saratoga County Jail in lieu of bail, insured bond, or partially secured bond to await further action in the matter. The adolescent male offender was arraigned and remanded to a secure detention facility in lieu of bail pending further proceedings in the matter, and the juvenile male offender was arraigned and released to a guardian pending further proceedings in the matter.

Malta Vets, Solomon Organization Gift Home To Local Malta Veteran Jeff August

MALTA — On April 14, Malta Veteran Appreciation Program (MVAP), in collaboration with The Solomon Organization, held a dedication ceremony at the home they remodeled and donated to Jeff August, a local military veteran.

August served in the U.S. Air Force from 1995 through 2007 on missions including a counter drug operation. He is currently a teacher who dedicates his time to children with special needs.

It is the fourth home donated to servicemembers and veterans in the Malta area for their commitment to the country.

In addition to providing the pad for Jeffrey’s mobile home,

Solomon Organization also contributed $1,000 to assist in landscaping, installing fencing, and other costs related to the property.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Pitney Meadows Community Farm will unveil its Windbreak Planting Project this weekend. This planting project aims to protect crops, nurture ecosystems, and engage with the land in innovative ways.

Pitney Meadows, located at 223 West Ave., Saratoga Springs, is welcoming the community and the general public to join them 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, to continue to bring the Windbreak to life. All levels of expertise are welcome.

Once dedicated to dairy and corn silage production, trees within the farms’ limit were actively removed to better serve the land’s purpose at the time. Currently the farm

is now venturing into new land management practices, recognizing the importance of wind protection in annual cropping systems, hand-inhand with benefits extending beyond crop shielding to water retention, pollinator support, wildlife habitat creation, and soil health improvement.

The project planting site, spanning 3.4 acres, has been carefully selected to straddle a historical watercourse, contributing to ecosystem balance and stream restoration efforts.

To kick off the planting, 140 Environmental Education students from Saratoga Springs High School were previously invited to begin bare root planting the 1500 native

tree saplings and shrubs.

The project was made possible by startup grant funding from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and will create a protective barrier against strong winds by strategically planting native trees and shrubs. The grant recognizes the multifaceted impact of the

May Nature on the Move Walks at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park

WILTON — On Mondays May 6 and May 20 at 10:30 a.m., Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will be holding its biweekly Nature on the Move walks.

These walks are led by one of Wilton Wildlife’s Environmental Educators and will take place at the Town of Wilton’s Neilmann Trailhead

on May 6 and NYS DEC’s Camp Saratoga on May 20. They are geared towards gentle exercise and are appropriate for adults at basic fitness levels. The group usually covers about 1.5 miles of trail. Nature on the Move happens every other week, year-round.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A six-day festival in June anticipated to produce an economic impact in 2024 of more than $50 million will feature a free kick-off concert on Broadway with the band Blues Traveler, officials announced during a May 1 press conference at the Skip Scirocco Music Hall at Saratoga Springs.

Nicknamed “Belmont on Broadway,” dozens of local business, tourism and government leaders were on hand for the announcement of a multifaceted celebration being planned for the week of the 2024 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

“Not only is the Belmont going to help economically for the city, but it’s going to put us on a pedestal that’s going to be worldwide,” said Saratoga

Springs Mayor John Safford, “This is just going to bring it to a whole new level.”

With construction ongoing at Long Island’s Belmont Park in 2024 and 2025, the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival will shift to Saratoga Race Course over the next two years. Racing days in 2024 will begin on Thursday, June 6, continue through Sunday, June 9 and will be highlighted by the 156th edition of the Belmont Stakes - the third leg of the Triple Crown - on Saturday, June 8.

Belmont on Broadway activities, slated to take place June 4 through June 9, will include a downtown window decorating contest, a pre-festival event called Embrace the Belmont, and a variety of other events including the free, outdoor concert with Blues Traveler, which will take place on Wednesday, June 5.

The concert will start at approximately 6 p.m. (with Blues

Traveler going on around 8:30) and end promptly at 10 p.m. The stage will be set directly on Broadway adjacent to the City Center and face south. Broadway will be closed likely from Van Dam to City Hall the day of the show, said Saratoga Springs City Center Executive Director Ryan McMahon.

Organizers anticipate 5,000 to 10,000 people to attend the event. Opening bands participating in the all-ages free concert as well as satellite parking, shuttle options, and additional weeklong activities will be announced leading up to the June 4-9 festival.

“We’re anticipating people will be coming up a little earlier in the week (prior to the June 6 race day start), so that’s why we’re trying to create these opportunities for people to have fun things to do, opportunities to engage with our community.

And our hotels are definitely seeing some occupancy earlier in the week, so that tells you some good things,” said Discover Saratoga President Darryl Leggieri. “It’s also something for our locals. Doing this free concert downtown, I want locals to know they’re welcomed too, they’re a part of this, were celebrating together.”

What will be interesting to learn is whether the staging of the Belmont in Saratoga brings different visitors to the area, compared with visitors who flock to Saratoga during the New York Racing Association’s annual Julyto-September summer meet.

“Everyone is going to learn off the first year, and we can build on that in the second year,” said NYRA President & CEO David O’Rourke, who spoke at this week’s presser. “It’s a new big event. You have the Whitney, the Travers, and now The Belmont,” O’Rourke said. “You might see more of an international (crowd); it’s typically on another level in terms of international exposure - and then if you have a Triple Crown, that’s just going to change the dynamic.”

Nearly 400 New Apartments, Townhouses Coming to Wilton Mall in 2026-27

occupancy in the summer of 2026 and 86 townhomes made available the following year.

The Wilton Mall will remain largely operational, and the hope is it will gain new interest as a result. The space formerly housing the Bon Ton store will be demolished and atop nearly 9 acres of land, 296 “market rate apartment units” will be constructed in its place. Demolition may take place as soon as this spring.

The additional 86 townhome units will be developed just across the road in the northeast corner of the property and on nearly 5 acres of land during the project’s second phase.

Mike Shaffer, general manager of Wilton Mall, is

hopeful the combined 382 new units will provide a financial boost for the mall. At its peak in 2016, the mall generated about $95 million in sales, but by 2022 sales had dropped in half, due to factors such as the closure of Bonton and Sears, the pandemic, and a public shift to shopping online.

“The mall needs that residential catalyst to attract new interest,” Shaffer told the Wilton Town Board during its April meeting when it approved the creation of a Planned Unit Development District (PUDD) to allow the project to move forward. Specifically, Shaffer cited the project as catalyst to potentially attracting national retailers, restaurants and new uses such as entertainment.

The evolution of the mall over the past decade or so has included bringing in Healthy

Living, Planet Fitness and a 22,000 square feet Home Goods store as a tenant. It transitioned the vacated Sears box store to Saratoga Hospital for primary care, clinical care and administrative uses, sited Orangetheory Fitness and recently celebrated the reopening of a cinema. The redevelopment of the vacant BonTon marks the next step in the evolution of the mall.

To meet the spring 2025 construction plan, design and preparations are anticipated to take three to four months, site plan subdivision approval four or five months, and building two or three months in time.

The hope is to have the first apartments online and for rent in the summer of 2026.

The Macerich Corporation and Paramount Development are collaborating on the project.

“For the construction, we have 318 jobs, $14.5 million in associated earnings, $37.5 million in sales spent locally,”

Tawney Farmer, of Macerich, told the Wilton Town Board during the 35-minute presentation and vote, which was approved 4-1, with Wilton Supervisor John Lant casting the lone vote against. “Annually, after the apartments are built, we will generate 125 permanent jobs, $5.6 million in associated

earnings and $16.6 million in annual sales.”

Additional estimates point to the Town receiving $368,000 in new sales tax revenue annually, and the Saratoga City School District experiencing a net benefit of $809,000 after estimating 25 new enrolled students the project may produce.

The proposal for the project had been in the discussion and debate stage for at least two years. The Wilton Planning Board and the Saratoga County Planning board had each previously issued a positive recommendation for the project.

City Seeks Vendors for Seasonal Parking Program

The city’s Department of Public Works is seeking qualified vendors of parking attendant services for a seasonal parking program which will operate annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day city-owned garages and surface lots.

The sealed bids must be submitted prior to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, when they will be publicly opened and read.

Vendors are requested to provide one attendant for parking services, 24 hours per day, throughout the duration of the parking program. One attendant will be responsible for monitoring activity within all parking garages and surface lots, assisting the public with parking-related questions or concerns, checking pay stations and troubleshooting as required.

Vendors should submit the hourly rate they would charge for the service. Potential bidders can supply an unlicensed attendant rate and/or a licensed security guard rate for consideration. Hourly rate should include all fees and expenses associated with the service.

State Budget Includes Near$200K AIM Boost for Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Finance Commissioner Minita Sanghvi released a statement April 22 to applaud the changes in the 2025 New York State Budget, which includes an increase of $50 million for Aid to Municipalities (AIM), to be allocated to cities and towns across the state.

Saratoga Springs will receive an increase of $191,566 in 2025, raising the total aid to $1,841,267, Commissioner Sanghvi reported.

“This is the first increase in AIM funding in 15 years. Saratoga Springs, like many communities, has been advocating for a closer look at municipal aid,” Sanghvi said in a statement. “I brought forward a resolution in March which passed 5-0, and we sent a letter to the NYS legislature and the

governor to advocate for an increase. The city also joined 370 other cities, towns and villages requesting an increase.”

Saratoga Springs had previously received about $1.6 million in aid through the AIM program, which remained flat aside from changes during the pandemic. In 2013, it was 4.25% of the city budget, and in 2023 it was just 2.7%. In that time, the city budget grew from $39.8 million to $57 million.

“Small cities need this partnership from the state to fulfill their community responsibilities. AIM is unrestricted funds, which means it can be used wherever the city most needs it.” Sanghvi said. “I’m grateful to our governor and state legislature for their advocacy during the budget process.”

Harbor Freight Tools Opening Saratoga Store

— Harbor Freight Tools announced last week that it will open a new store in Saratoga Springs at 3064 Route 50 next to Best Buy. Construction is currently underway, with an official opening date to be determined. According to the company, around 25 to 30 jobs will be created.

“We’ve been looking to open a location in Saratoga Springs for a number of years so that we can provide the tools and equipment at tremendous values to the community,”

said Trey Feiler, Senior Vice President of Real Estate and Construction, in a statement.

“In addition to finding a great

location, we were attracted by the availability of great Associates in the Saratoga Springs area, and we look forward to having them join the Harbor Freight team.”

Mentors Needed: Saratoga Mentoring Expands Recruitment Efforts

— The Saratoga Mentoring program needs more volunteer mentors and is expanding its recruitment efforts.

Program Director Colleen Forneris said that her organization has attended a number of local events recently to help match more kids with potential mentors. Currently, the program has more kids than mentors.

“They all absolutely benefit from having an extra adult in their life,” Forneris said.

Mentees range in age from 7 to 17, and the majority of them are contending with challenging life circumstances that can range from problems in school to problems at home.

Mentors can serve as role models to these kids, giving them one-on-one support and granting them access to activities and events they otherwise wouldn’t experience. These activities can include hiking, going to the movies, exploring a

museum, or bowling.

“The [mentors] that we have are absolutely fantastic and really have made a big difference in their kiddo’s life,”

Forneris said.

Although mentors can come from many different walks of life, Forneris said they tend to fall into three categories: retirees looking for volunteer work, working professionals searching for a meaningful activity, and college students.

After filling out an application, prospective mentors meet with a Saratoga Mentoring representative to discuss their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and interests. That way, the mentor can be matched up with a kid who has similar preferences. This makes it easier for mentors and mentees to find activities they can do together.

Saratoga Mentoring expects a one-year commitment so that a connection can be built between mentor and mentee.

On a weekly basis, most mentors spend anywhere from two to six hours with their kids.

Forneris said that one unique benefit of the program is that Saratoga Mentoring

can utilize other resources and charities to help mentees with other life problems, such as paying bills or buying groceries and clothes.

Vroom! BSpa Offers School Bus Test Drives

BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District is inviting any adults interested in learning more about driving a school bus to attend “Come Drive a Bus Day” at its Transportation Facility on Saturday, May 4. Attendees with a valid driver’s license will be able to test drive a school bus in the facility’s parking lot with a district school bus trainer.

The district currently has positions open for bus drivers, substitute bus attendants, and substitute drivers. The jobs include guaranteed hours,

paid training, and possibility of a regular route with health benefits. Employees also get school breaks, holidays, and summers off.

The event will take place on May 4 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Transportation Facility on Rt. 50 (1458 Saratoga Road), just south of the Janet V Corners.

Ballston Spa Names New Middle School Principal

BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Board of Education is scheduled to appoint Mr. Anders Rasmussen as the new Middle School Principal on May 8.

Rasmussen, who has been with the district since 2012, has served as Principal of Wood Road Elementary School since 2018. Prior to his service in Ballston Spa schools, he held administrative positions at the Greenville School District, and he was an English teacher and coach at Ichabod Crane Middle School.

“I am very excited to continue my career at Ballston Spa in this new role,” Rasmussen said in a statement. “I am grateful to the district and community for entrusting me with this responsibility. I look forward to meeting the middle school students, families and staff. I can’t wait to learn about the

great work that is underway and maintaining the strong tradition of excellence at Ballston

Spa Middle School.” Rasmussen’s appointment as Principal will begin on July 1.

Discusses Proposed Transportation Cuts

At an April 25 2024-2025 budget adoption meeting, the Saratoga Springs Board of Education discussed proposed cuts to the district’s transportation department.

During the first public comment period, Dean Musgrove, a bus dispatcher, spoke in opposition to the cuts. “It’s really going to do a lot of damage to our department and I don’t think you realize the extent of it,” Musgrove said.

Bob Cohan, a substitute bus driver, echoed Musgrove’s sentiments. “It’s one of the lowest paying school jobs for people, and why you go after us is beyond me,” he said.

A prior budget presentation on March 28 suggested that two full-time transportation department positions could be eliminated: a bus mechanic and a bus dispatcher. The district is not planning on cutting any driver positions.

Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Michael Patton said there had been “significant sacrifices” this year in order to achieve a balanced budget. “We truly appreciate the feedback that we do receive from transportation,” he said. “Mr. Musgrove and I had several conversations.”

Dr. Patton said he would meet with transportation staff next Tuesday and had regularly been in touch with the department’s director. Dr. Patton also said that other similarly-sized school districts

had fewer dispatchers and routing specialists than Saratoga Springs.

During the second public comment period, Musgrove said that on the morning of April 25, two dispatchers and three mechanics had to drive school buses to cover for five drivers.

In the afternoon, Musgrove said that two bus runs needed to be canceled despite three dispatchers, three mechanics, and the transportation department’s assistant director all pitching in to cover for bus drivers.

“I have a hard time understanding why $180,000 can’t be located to cover these two positions that you’re talking about cutting,” Musgrove said. “Even though they’re not technically driver positions, they are actually drivers.”

Education Board member Amanda Ellithorpe said she felt for the transportation department.

“I’ve been there,” she said. “I get it. I didn’t like having to make the decision tonight.”

Now that the board has adopted the 2024-2025 budget, a budget hearing will take place on May 9, followed by a budget vote on May 21.

Lake Ave Elementary Celebrates 100 Years

When the Palladian-style Lake Avenue school building opened in 1924, no students crossing its entrance knew about the Great Depression or World War II or Beatlemania. 100 years later, the Saratoga Springs City School District is celebrating the history of Lake Ave Elementary with a bevy of proclamations and celebrations.

On April 30, Lake Avenue School Day was officially declared by a representative from Congressman Paul Tonko’s office, State Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, State Senator James Tedisco, and Mayor John Safford. The group gathered outside at the

corner of Lake Ave. and Regent St. to issue their decrees.

“The history of this school is so long and so great,” said Mayor Safford. “It kind of reflects this wonderful little city that we call our own.”

After the city’s former high school burned down, the Lake Ave building replaced it. The first graduating class was in 1924, and the building remained the city’s high school until 1965. It was briefly transformed into a junior high until 1972, when it then became the elementary school that it remains today.

In celebration of 100 years, an open-house style community event will be held at the school on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Attendees can peruse

a historical exhibition, take a guided tour of the building, play two-square games, listen to live music, enjoy some Ben & Jerry’s ice cream or Nally coffee, and shop for limited edition centennial merchandise. The event will also feature food trucks, face painting, and a book fair.

Many of us grew up being told to “finish all of the food on your plate”. I know that even today, I feel obligated to finishing a beverage or plate of food regardless of the portion size. Preparing food at home gives us a better consideration of portion size. Resizing our portions may seem a challenge. However, using portion control as a healthy-eating strategy can give us the ability to each more foods while normalizing our portions. Practices we can use are to use a smaller plate or use smaller cooking items as we make our recipes, and take one bite at a time by taking smaller bites. Ramekins are an item that can be used for a variety of dishes and can assist with cutting down serving sizes. A ramekin is also known as a souffle’ dish. It is a small bakeware vessel that is a small straight-sided ceramic dish used for preparing and serving individual portions.

There are so many uses for a ramekin. Here are a few:

You can bake eggs in a ramekin. Eggs have been put on the bad food list in the past, but the truth is that they are a good protein option for starting your day. The cholesterol in eggs is in the yokes, so if that’s a concern you can always use just egg whites. Use ramekins to bake eggs as an alternative to the typical fried or scrambled eggs. Just crack an egg into a ramekin coated in nonstick cooking spray, pour one tablespoon of low-fat milk over it and season as desired. Try adding shredded low-fat cheese or Canadian bacon. You can also put vegetables like spinach, tomatoes or diced peppers on the bottom of the ramekin before adding the egg. Place the ramekins on a baking sheet and bake for about 15 to

As I am trying to maintain my New Year’s resolution of healthier eating, I realize a key piece is portion control. Over the years, our society has reverted to larger serving sizes. Larger portion sizes and increased consumption have impacted the health of America and worldwide (foodinsight.com).

20 minutes at 375 degrees F. The temperature of the egg should reach 160 degrees F, according to safety guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Bread pudding is usually a decadent dessert, but you can fit into your healthy diet. Using your favorite bread pudding recipe and preparing it in ramekins allows you to have a small single serving, keeping calories under control. You can also experiment with swapping some of the ingredients to boost nutritional value. For example, use whole wheat bread and lowfat milk instead of white bread and heavy cream or whole milk.

Mini pot pies and meatloaves: Portion control and attractive food presentation are both advantages you’ll get when preparing main dishes in ramekins. Serving a personal a pot pie or meatloaf to your family will likely be a hit, especially for kids. You can still prepare your recipes for these classics as usual and then divide the prepared food among the ramekins before baking. You may need to cut down the amount of your original recipe, however, if you plan to use only a few ramekins. If you’re concerned about grease filling up the ramekins when cooking mini meatloaves, try placing a piece of bread -- preferably somewhat stale or toasted -- in the bottom of the dish. The bread will absorb a large amount of the grease. It will also help to use leaner ground beef; try to use 90 to 93 percent lean.

Fruit desserts: Ramekins are ideal for many classic desserts, such as custards, mousses and even mini baked cheesecakes. They also work well for baking individual fruit desserts, such as crisps and cobblers. Crisps use a topping primarily made

INGREDIENTS

• 1 1/2 cups dry macaroni

• 2 tbsp butter

• 2 tbsp flour

• 1 cup whole milk

• 1/2 cup mozzarella , grated

• 1/2 cup cheddar , grated

• 1/3 cup parmesan

with dried oats while cobblers are flour based. An additional advantage to preparing desserts this way is that you can use a variety of fruits to prepare several different crisps or cobblers at once.

One of our favorite uses for ramekins is for single servings of mac n cheese.. Mac n cheese is down home comfort food and it makes you feel all warm and cozy. These little ramekins are ideal for individual servings of mac n cheese. I love the whole experience – I hold the ramekin as I scoop some out and I feel the warmth of it since it just came out of the oven. I scoop in and get a large spoonful of cheesy goodness. Along with the cheesy inside there is this crunchy and crumbly topping that might even be the best part of the dish.

• 1 tsp salt to taste

• 1/2 tsp pepper

• 2 tbsp melted butter

• 1/3 cup bread crumbs

• 1/4 cup grated cheddar

• 1 tbsp parsley

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook the macaroni according to packaged instructions. Drain, rinse and set aside.

2. In a saucepan, on medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour until smooth. This creates a roux. Continue to whisk it for a minute.

3. While whisking, slowly pour in the milk. Once smooth add the cheeses, salt and pepper. Stir until smooth.

4. In a large bowl, mix the macaroni with the cheese sauce until all the noodles are covered are evenly coated in some sauce.

5. Grease 4 ramekins. Scoop the mac and cheese equally among the ramekins.

6. In a small bowl mix the melted butter and bread crumbs together until there is a dry and crumbly texture. Stir in the 1/4 cup of grated cheddar and parsley. Spread the crumb topping evenly across the macaroni and cheese.

7. Bake in a 350F oven for 12-14 minutes.

Gardening may garden

Finally spring has arrived! This is a great time to get started on planting hardy trees and shrubs. Sadly, in my line of work, I get to see a lot of dead shrubs and trees that have died within a few of years after being planted.

I always like to look them over to see what went wrong. A pattern has become apparent...most were simply planted too deep. You can still see the dirt on the stem way above the crown of the plant.

If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil or mulch, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system up through the bark to the branches and leaves above. It may take a year or three but it is usually fatal.

Let me walk you through the process of planting a tree or shrub.

First, dig the planting hole a little bit wider than the plant’s root ball but only as deep as the root ball or the pot that contains the roots. If you’ve dug the hole too deep, fill it in a bit. Add compost or just the original soil to build up the bottom of the planting hole to insure that the stem isn’t buried too deeply. This is also a good time to add Bio-Tone to the planting hole. BioTone provides gentle organic nutrients for the tree. Perhaps more important, Bio-Tone also adds beneficial soil microbes and several strains of Mycorrizal fungi. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball needs to still be visible after planting.

Next, place the tree or shrub into the hole and check again to make sure you’re at the proper planting depth. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel works) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground. This seems trivial, but it can make all the difference to the plant’s health and survival.

Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant is at the proper level, fill in the rest of the planting hole. This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make another mistake.

When you dig a hole, then fill it with a root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. What to do with it? Many will opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. The dark soil where the stem met the soil in the pot should still be just visible near the trunk of the tree. You haven’t planted too deeply as long as you can see the original soil that the tree came in. The berm will collect water and direct it down to the root system below. Finally, water heavily after planting to remove any air pockets from the soil.

You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. Remember: roots is roots and stems is stems. Bury the roots but let the stems be free to breathe.

Susan B. Fassett (nee Thompson)

BALLSTON SPA — Susan B. Fassett (nee Thompson), age 79, of Ballston Spa, passed away on April 16, 2024, after suffering a stroke. She was born on November 30, 1944, in Buffalo and grew up in Dansville, N.Y., before leaving her hometown to go to college at the State University at Albany. Susan was a beloved high school math teacher, beginning her career at Owen D. Young Central School and then moving to and retiring from Schuylerville Central School. She was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Susan was an avid walker. You’d find her out walking around her neighborhood, the village of Ballston Spa, the Saratoga Spa State Park, and anywhere else someone invited her to go. She rarely refused an offer to go for a walk. She was a regular at the Saratoga YMCA and was always recruiting people to join her rowing team. She was closing in on 11,000,000 meters rowed since they started tracking. She also won her age bracket in many of our area road races. There aren’t many 5ks, 10ks, or half marathons locally that she didn’t participate in. She also completed multiple marathons. She enjoyed hiking in the Adirondacks and summited numerous mountains. At home you could find her in her flower gardens trying to keep the weeds at bay or sitting outside watching the birds on her many bird feeders. When time would allow, she fostered many kittens throughout

the years from the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. She and her husband traveled extensively and saw many beautiful places and their favorite was Puerto Rico.

Susan was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Malta and the Saratoga Senior Center. Susan is survived by her daughters, Christine (Ken) Wright of Ballston Spa, and Katherine Culbert of Houston, Texas; sisters, Donna Gridley and Bonnie Wolfer of Dansville, N.Y.; grandchildren, Whitney and Nicholas Wright and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Fassett; parents, Lois and Howard Thompson; and sister, Gloria Berg. Susan will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and she will live on through her organ donation and her anatomical gift to Albany Medical College. Her family would like to thank the nurses and medical staff at Albany Medical Center for their excellent care. A service to celebrate Susan’s life will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Malta on May 18, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology or Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park.

Ellen M Stiles-Calabrese

MECHANICVILLE – Ellen

M Stiles-Calabrese, 79, of Mechanicville passed away on April 21, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a retired Rural Letter Carrier with the United States Postal Service out of Ballston Spa and then Malta Branch; after retirement she worked a few summers at the Saratoga Racetrack betting windows.

Born on September 17, 1944 in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Stuart Stiles and Virginia White Stiles. Ellen was a proud member of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 for almost three years. Ellen was an Inner Guard, an appointed position, and was recently chosen as the “Officer of the Year” a well-earned honor. She loved being a member and was proud of the support and help the Elks gave our community.

She was current President of the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 Ladies Auxiliary, as well as a member of the Principessa Elena Society and the Eagles Club of Saratoga Springs. In her leisure she enjoyed gardening, reading, and she cherished spending time with her family and her many girlfriends; often going out to lunch. She took pride in organizing many of her class reunions for Saratoga Springs High School Class of 1962. Prior to COVID she volunteered at the Saratoga Casino and the Military Museum both in Saratoga Springs. She was a past president of the Wa-Sa-Wa Association of Dowsing. Dowsing is a type of divination employed in attempts to locate ground water, buried metals, ores, or gemstones. Ellen is predeceased by her husband Genarro Calabrese, brothers and sisters-in-law Edward (Pat), Stuart (Janet) and Robert Stiles and a sister Monica Lee; and her stepson Gerry Calabrese.

Survivors include her daughters Melissa Racine (Brian) of Scotia, and Jenna White of Wilton, her sons, Michael Frasl (Paula) of Broadalbin, and Nick Dean (Kim) of Round Lake, a stepson, Peter Calabrese (Renee) of Hartsdale, NY, two step daughters, Christina Devaney (Tom) of Rensselaer, and Sherri Calabrese of Feura Bush, NY, brother Malcolm Stiles (LaVerne) of Wilton, and sister-in-law Orpha Stiles of Saratoga Springs. Grandchildren

Grayson Racine (Ashton), Gavin Racine, Gage Wille, Aaron Dean, Kaitlyn Dean, Lucas McDermott (Lauren), Drew White, Gabriel Calabrese, Julien Calabrese, Jared Calabrese, Cooper Devaney and Violet Devaney; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday May 13, 2024, at the Tunison Funeral Home 105 Lake Ave. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge will hold a memorial service at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Auxiliary’s Service. Elks will attend together at this hour. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs following the calling hours. Ellen did request that people celebrate her life not, mourn her death, by wearing bright colors to her funeral.

Messages From Survivors: One Family’s Holocaust Legacy

2024 Public History Award Celebration

The concerts will feature the music of the Bee Gees and the Eagles

Headliners Night Fever - a tribute to the Bee Gees on Saturday night, and Hotel California - a tribute to the Eagles on Sunday night. Each night’s entertainment kicks off at 6 p.m. with a DJ (DJ MixItUp NY on Saturday and DJ Ketchup on Sunday), followed by the headliner performance at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, July 21 concert will also be followed by a special fireworks show.

Cincinnati Bengals Sign Local Football Player

GREENWICH — The

NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals signed undrafted free agent wide receiver Cole Burgess last week. Burgess is a Greenwich, New York native who played for SUNY Cortland, where he totaled 3,133 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns in his college career.

Last month, Burgess had lunch at the Front St. Deli with Ballston Spa Mayor Frank Rossi. In a social media post,

Rossi wrote that Burgess is “somebody that exudes not just confidence, but also positivity in every step he takes in his journey.”

In an official draft profile, NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein wrote that “Burgess has the size, testing, and production to create some league interest. He thrived against a lower level of competition but plays with a consistently competitive demeanor.”

Racing Museum Announces 2024 Hall of Fame Class

— The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame announced its 2024 Hall of Fame class last week:

• Jockey Joel Rosario and racehorses Gun Runner (KY) and Justify (KY) in the contemporary category

• Jockey Abe Hawkins and

racehorses Aristides (KY) and Lecomte (KY) were selected by the Pre-1900 Historic Review Committee

• Harry F. Guggenheim, Clement L. Hirsch, and Joe Hirsch were chosen by the Pillars of the Turf Committee

Rosario, Gun Runner, and Justify were all elected in their

first year of eligibility.

The 2024 Hall of Fame class will be enshrined on Friday, August 2 at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion in Saratoga Springs at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the Museum website at www.racingmuseum. org. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Donna Barton Brothers Embraces the Belmont

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

When Donna Barton Brothers retired from horse racing in 1998, she was the second-winningest female jockey in the country by money earned. Since then, she’s become one of the sport’s most prominent advocates, using her talents as a broadcaster and reporter for NBC Sports to explain the complicated world of horse racing to the masses.

“We have a lot of language that is specific only to our sport,” Brothers told Saratoga TODAY, “and it doesn’t make people want to know more about our sport if we constantly use language that excludes them from understanding what we’re talking about.”

On June 4, she’ll bring her explanatory skills to “Embrace the Belmont,” an event at the

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame that aims to teach the Saratoga community about its upcoming Triple Crown race.

“I just wanted the people who are in town and the ones most affected by the Saratoga circus coming to town every year, to have an event for them,” Brothers said.

Fox Sports analysts Acacia Courtney Clement and Maggie Wolfendale will join Brothers at “Embrace the Belmont” and discuss all things Saratoga, which ranks as Brother’s second-favorite track in the country.

“Saratoga is such an iconic venue,” Brothers said. “When you walk in and look at that structure, you feel the 100 years plus of history ingrained in the wood.”

Brothers said that much like Keeneland in Louisville, Kentucky, people in the Saratoga paddock “still have a deep reverence for the sport.”

That reverence is part of the

reason why Brothers said people in the horseracing industry are eagerly anticipating this year’s Belmont Stakes at Saratoga. But there are some aspects to this year’s race that insiders are less excited about, such as the New York Racing Association’s (NYRA) decision to run the event at a mile and a quarter instead of the traditional mile and a half.

Brothers also said that there’s been a push in the industry to change the Triple Crown schedule to make each race about a month apart, with the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May, the Preakness on the first Saturday of June, and finally Belmont on the first Saturday in July. Brothers said NYRA has been resistant to these proposed changes.

“I think it was a little bit surprising that they were willing to change the distance so quickly without any sort of discussion with people in the industry, but yet they seem to have very little willingness to change the dates,

the spacing, of the Triple Crown races,” Brothers said.

Nonetheless, Brothers said that the primary response among horseracing insiders to this year’s Belmont is excitement.

“We love the history of horse racing and we love that some things will never change. But it’s also fun to have a little bit of excitement and have things shaken up just a little bit here and there,” she said.

One organization that has shaken up the industry a bit is Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga, organizers of the “Embrace the Belmont” event. Brothers visited the nonprofit’s facilities in March and came away impressed.

“They’re helping people who are marginalized in one way or another, and they’re treating those people in a proven, effective way,” Brothers said. “I think that kind of work is very important but also very underrated.”

Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga rescues retired racehorses and matches them with humans who can benefit from equine-assisted therapy. Some of those who benefit include both adults and children with mental illness, veterans, families, couples, and victims of domestic violence.

Saratoga Lacrosse Team Honors Olivia Allen’s Memory, Raises Funds for Childhood Cancer Research

— It was a bright, beautiful day in Saratoga Springs when two lacrosse teams took the field. But something was different about this game. Opposing teams wore matching shirts that displayed yellow ribbons. An American flag flew at half-mast. Handwritten notes tied to a fence bordering the field offered tributes to someone the community had lost.

On a seemingly typical Monday afternoon, the Saratoga

Springs and Jamesville-DeWitt girls varsity lacrosse teams paid tribute to Olivia Allen, a recent Saratoga grad who succumbed to leukemia in March. Silently, they completed 47 passes back and forth, a symbolic gesture recognizing the 47 children who are diagnosed with cancer every day in the United States.

“On March 28, Olivia left a legacy of strength and determination,” said Blue Streaks Coach Jennifer Furze while standing at midfield. “Liv’s heroic story is being heard and felt throughout the entire country. It is truly a testament to the beautiful human being she was.”

The remarks were deeply

personal for Furze, whose daughter was best friends with Olivia. Months ago, Furze and her team began planning a collaboration with the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation’s LaCROSSe Out Cancer campaign. Then, Olivia passed away. Since then, Furze said her team has been passionate about aiding the foundation.

“I think it’s been a really great outlet for their grief,” Furze said. “They’re channeling the way that they’re feeling, their emotions, into positivity. Because that’s ultimately what Liv stood for.”

On behalf of both teams, Coach Furze presented a $10,000 check to the foundation. It took

the teams only three weeks to raise the donated funds. The money will aid efforts to find cures for pediatric cancers.

According to Bonnie Lattimore, the foundation’s director of strategic partnerships, cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for kids, but only 4% of federal

funding for cancer research is devoted to children. “We try to do anything we can, like partner with Saratoga Springs lacrosse or other organizations, to try to fill that funding gap, and they’ve done a fantastic job.” Lattimore said that $50 funds about one hour of research. “This has a huge impact for pediatric cancer.”

Olivia Allen graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 2023 and planned to attend Florida State University to study nursing. She played for the Blue Streaks field hockey and gymnastic teams.
