WILTON — The Springettes – one of the Saratoga Springs area’s premier girls’ gymnastics teams – continued to do their namesake hometown proud with an impressive showing at a recent state competition.

The Saratoga Regional YMCA Gymnastics Team, also known as “The Springettes,” attended the New York State YMCA Gymnastics Championships at SUNY Oneonta from April 22-23.

At the meet, there were nine YMCA gymnastics teams from across NY competing, which amounted to just over 200 athletes. In all, 30 gymnasts from Saratoga Springs competed, taking part in the vault, bars, beam, and floor events.

City Gifted Land

by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY A small parcel of land which sits at a key intersection on South Broadway may soon belong to the city. The property, which once sited a gas station, sits at 209 South Broadway - adjacent to a Dunkin’ Donuts shop - and has been vacant for a decade.

The city first considered using open space funds to purchase the 0.2-acre parcel in 2008 and subsequently develop a pocket park that would feature equine sculptures. Earlier this year, in her State of The

City address, city Mayor Joanne Yepsen reported that the Open Space Committee was still actively working to acquire the parcel.

A Memorandum of Understanding issued last week noted that the property owner, David Eshaghian - doing business as the Crown Oil Co. – desired to gift the parcel to the city.

“He spent a lot of time in the city when he was a kid,” Mayor Joanne Yepsen reported. “This will be a nice new gateway to the southern portion of the city.”

Where: Congress Park.

Q. What are you doing today?

A. Painting. My composition is down this stream, picking up the reflective light and catching some of that beautiful willow tree.

Q. Why did you select this location?

A. I’ve been over here the past two days scouting out locations. My studio is at the Amp Galleries, but the morning light here is quite beautiful.

Q. When did you first come to Saratoga Springs.

A. We just moved into town a year ago after living between Ballston Spa and Galway. We lived on a 85- acre farm for 44 years. When I first got married we lived in Saratoga Springs. That was in the early ‘70s. Having lived in the country, we drove everywhere. My goal now is to use my car only once a week, if I have to. I love being able to walk everywhere. I like the availability of everything.

Q. What was it like living in Saratoga Springs during the 1970s?

A. It was basically boarded-up at that point, but we still loved it.

The bones of the city, you know? To me, it was aesthetically pleasing even back then. I love the architecture, the homes on North Broadway, the grand scale of the 1800s that was still here and still very much intact.

Q. What did you want to be when you were a kid?

A. I always wanted to be an artist. I’ve painted since I was 10 years old and I have a bachelor of fine arts degree from Tyler School of Art in painting.

Q. What are some of the other arts you’re interested in?

A. I like classical music and opera. I love “Carmen.” When I paint in my studio that’s the one that really get my juices flowing. My favorite film? I love “Casablanca.”

Q. Is there something you would like to see more of in the city?

A. To me Saratoga is idyllic. I like the walkability of it. There is so much: the restaurants, the arts and SPAC, the influence of Skidmore. To me, this town has everything. And the track. I like that it’s here for six weeks. I know August is busy and it could be annoying when you’re trying to do things during the day with the extra cars and the people, but to me, I like that excitement.

Rebuilding Together Provides Home Repairs SARATOGA COUNTY — Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, a local nonprofit organization committed to providing safe and healthy housing for low-income homeowners, is providing much-needed repairs and accessibility modifications for 15 local families in need for National Rebuilding Month.

Rebuilding Together is part of a national network of affiliates who participate in National

Rebuilding Month each April.

Nearly 40,000 volunteers are serving in more than 1,600 affiliateled rebuild projects across the country through May. Rebuilding Together is assisting 15 local families, including a veteran and his wife.

Carl and Marcia need a ramp and a walk-in shower so that Carl can continue to safely and comfortably remain in his home.

Saratoga Battlefield’s 100-Mile Challenge STILLWATER — With the National Park Service Centennial celebration now over, Saratoga National Historical Park is looking forward to the next 100 years of stewardship.

Between May 1 and October 31, the public is encouraged to join a 100-Mile Challenge: biking or hiking the trails at the battlefield to accumulate 100 miles.

Through this challenge people can enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage of this local site as they explore their national park, plus get some exercise.

Anyone can take part in the challenge, from beginners to advanced hikers and cyclists, young and old, human and canine. Each participating pet must also hike 100 miles in the park with their human companion, following park pet policies.

Each participant (including

pets) must register for the challenge by sending an email to: SARA_ info@nps.gov. To register more than one person, specify the number of participants and their names.

Park staff will periodically send email messages with updates about this challenge, including news about upcoming hiking and biking events in the park, hiking and biking tips, and motivational thoughts. Email addresses will not be shared with others.

Each participant who completes 100 miles between May 1 and October 31 will receive an award for their achievement. Yet the real awards are new experiences and memories from adventures in a national park, of which there are more than 400 nationwide.

Public Works Commissioner Anthony “Skip” Scirocco is considering options to add a pathway or sidewalk in front of the playground. Residents who utilize it have indicated that accessibility is an important feature they would like to see added.

MALTA — On May 2, endorsed Republican candidates Saratoga County Clerk Craig Hayner, Sheriff Michael Zurlo and Coroner Susan Hayes-Masa held a press conference at the Hyatt Place Hotel to formally kick off their re-election campaigns.

A former councilman in the Town of Halfmoon, Hayner, 49, was first elected as clerk in November of 2013. A lifelong resident of Halfmoon, Hayner has extensive corporate business

management experience and is a small business owner of Hayner’s Ice Cream Hall of Fame.

Zurlo, 63, a Saratoga County native was first elected sheriff in 2013. Prior to that he served as a senior investigator, patrol deputy, criminal investigator, sergeant and lieutenant since he first joined the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office. He has also served as the Town Justice for the Town of Stillwater.

Accredited by the New York State Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners, Saratoga Springs resident Hayes-Masa, 62, was first elected as County Coroner in 2013. Working for the Saratoga County Coroners office since 1995, Hayes-Masa is a certified surgical technician and has the completed the Medical Examiner/Coroner 101 Course.

Hayes-Masa is also the director of donor services at the Lions Eye Bank.

Young Local Woman Honored SARATOGA SPRINGS — On April 29, Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) held the second annual Women of Distinction Awards at Skidmore College. The ceremony was held to honor women in the community who make a difference.

Stephanie Fortune, a junior at Academy of the Holy Names, was presented with the award in the Young Person category.

“Volunteering is a way of bridging diverse groups of people together for a common good,” Fortune said.

Impressions Holds Pet Celebration

by Thomas Kika Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Impressions of Saratoga will be holding a kick-off event for its 13th annual Pet Appreciation Celebration, a weeklong celebration held to recognize the National Humane Society’s “Be Kind to Animals Week” and the American Veterinary Association’s “National Pet Week,” on May 6, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The rest of the celebration will take place from May 7-14.

A host of activities and giveaways will be available for attendees to take part in, and naturally there will be plenty of treats and fresh water for all accompanying pets.

Some of the activities during the event will include: - A coloring contest for varying age ranges, including 4 and under, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-12.

- A “Count the Biscuits” contest, where the closest guesses will take

home special prizes. This contest will be held all week.

- A book signing with Lisa Giknis and her book, “Fetching Words,” on May 6, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

- An adoption clinic with H.O.P.E., a division of the North Shore Animal League, on May 6.

- A dog photo shoot with Dave Bigler’s Saratoga Portrait Studio, on May 6. Sessions will be available every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., and will cost $25. All proceeds from these shoots will go to H.O.P.E. Participants will receive the photos as a digital file after the shoot.

- A Derby Day celebration on May 6, with Mint Juleps and Kentucky-style sweets to celebrate the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby.

Malta Hits the Brakes

by Larry Goodwin Saratoga TODAY MALTA — On Monday night, homeowners from a busy stretch of Route 67 in Malta persuaded town officials to postpone a vote that would promote more commercial development in the area.

“My mind was made up until you folks came out,” stated Councilwoman Maggi Ruisi. “I listened, and I heard you.”

The Malta Town Board scheduled the May 1 public hearing for its Route 67 South Side Rezoning Amendment. Its passage by the board would affect the future of undeveloped property between the Exit 12 traffic circles and Brownell Road.

New construction is already underway a short distance farther west near the intersection of Route 67 and Eastline Road.

For an hour there was a lively discussion among Malta homeowners, who filled the

town complex parking lot to capacity, and board members led

by Supervisor Vincent DeLucia.

DeLucia ended up accepting a motion to table the related resolution. It would rezone several parcels of Route 67 land on either side of Ruhle Road into a new commercial (or “C2”) district.

“I’ve seen dramatic changes in the town of Malta in my 70 years of living here. I recall almost every bit of growth,” DeLucia reported after the public hearing and unanimous vote to table the measure.

There were rezoning supporters in the room, but a majority of homeowners vented their frustrations about more traffic along that heavily traveled stretch of Route 67.

“I think you’re going to have a real fight on your hands with people in this neighborhood,” predicted Route 67 resident Mark Sickler.

“The value of our property is going to go down if it becomes

C2” commercial zoning, added Andrew James, a homeowner from Settlers Ridge North.

“Malta as a whole is being overdeveloped. It’s lost what Malta was in terms of being a community,” James said. “That has us upset.”

Betsy Marré, a resident of Settlers Ridge South, said more drivers should be ticketed by law enforcement for “doing 90” in the 45 mph zone on that part of Route 67; and that the state Department of Transportation (DOT) should upgrade the entire section of roadway before any new construction plans are approved.

That should include turn lanes specifically designed by the DOT to accommodate Ruhle Road traffic, Marré told the board.

When approached after making her statements at the podium, Marré asserted that “town board members are making decisions without proper due diligence” and are “not understanding commercial property vacancy” rates.

Her husband Ernie Marré questioned how the rezoning amendment came to be voted on in the first place. He also argued that local property values, and Malta’s quiet rural appeal, could be “adversely impacted” by more commercial development on Route 67.

The Marrés and several other speakers referred to the

difficulties faced every day by local drivers who turn left to enter Ruhle Road, or try to exit in either direction.

“Are we going to get some consideration?” Ernie Marré asked board members. “It sounds like it’s almost a done deal.”

“We’ve considered all of these things. We’re not operating in a vacuum,” DeLucia responded.

Ultimately, Councilman John Hartzell made the motion to table the rezoning resolution, explaining that the current town board is simply making “mid-course corrections” to a master plan passed 17 years ago by a previous board.

“When we all came to town government this course had been charted,” Hartzell said.

Both Ruisi and Hartzell stated that they hailed from rural communities, and that land preservation in general is an important topic to them.

Councilman Craig Warner went even further, saying his own family members had opposed excessive development much like the Malta homeowners do now.

“We take what you say very seriously,” Warner told those in attendance. “I understand what you said and it will be considered.”

Support Town Ethics Rules

by Larry Goodwin Saratoga TODAY MILTON — A solid majority of residents who spoke at a public hearing Wednesday about the town’s Code of Ethics opposed making changes to the code that have been proposed by officials.

“For some reason, this has stirred up quite an uprise in the Town of Milton,” observed Supervisor Dan Lewza at the outset of the May 3 public hearing, which was attended by nearly 50 local residents.

The hearing was scheduled on the heels of a vote by the town board in April to appoint Megan Soden, a Republican Committee member, to the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Language in the Milton Code of Ethics explicitly prohibits active political party and committee members from serving on voting boards in town government.

Lewza said Soden “has not participated in zoning board meetings” and will not do so until the matter is resolved.

Lewza and Councilwoman Barbara Kerr, who voted against Soden’s appointment citing the ethics code, said they had agreed earlier in the week to postpone a formal vote until the five-member Ethics Board has reviewed proposed changes to the code’s language.

More than 20 people spoke at the public hearing, and nearly all of them opposed such changes.

Local resident David Beals said keeping the ethics policy as is will prevent political parties from having “too much say” in Milton, as they did before the current code was established in 2010.

Bernadette VanDeinse, a Republican Committee member, was among a minority of

people who voiced support for Soden’s appointment, as well as the proposed changes before the town board.

She said current ethics rules have been “misused” to suppress numerous people who desire service in town government. “I do think this has been hurting our town and holding us back,” VanDeinse told the board.

“That’s irrelevant to the purpose of the ethics board,” responded the next speaker, Carl Hackert, a longtime registered Republican in the Village of Ballston Spa. He reported that a family member brought a formal ethics complaint to that board in years past. Hackert claimed that “a whole new generation of people do not respect” the town’s established ethics policies.

If the Milton Town Board goes forward with the proposed code change, Hackert added, it could have negative impacts for Republicans at the ballot box in the future. “It’s going to show up in the fall election,” he said.

When Soden herself took the podium, she vowed to “step down” from the Republican Committee if the town board does not approve changing the ethics code.

Her only motivation, Soden said, is to ensure the code “is equitable for all, not just some.”

Lewza informed six-year Ethics Board member Ben Potter that there would be no “time frame” to review the proposed changes and make a recommendation to the town board.

Lewza closed the sometimescontentious public hearing on a positive note, thanking so many local residents for showing up to raise their voices.

“This is what’s good for democracy,” the supervisor said.

Kentucky Derby Parties in Saratoga SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby will be held Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown, and will be followed by the Preakness Stakes in May, and the Belmont Stakes in June.

Roses or not, Pletcher Already Won For Pletcher, Win or Lose, Derby Season is a Success

by Brendan O’Meara for Saratoga TODAY At about 1830h on Seis de Mayo Todd Pletcher, aka the Monolith, aka DJ McSaddle, aka Optimus Prime, will give the girth a solid tug* to three horses in the Kentucky Derby.

This particular Saturday means 10 furlongs, mint juleps and Pletcher’s college try. He receives so much undue hate, a ratio of 99 parts boo to one part, well, yeah, you’ve got a point.

Through his career he is 1-for-45 in the Kentucky Derby.

Mentioning this to him will result in a deep sigh followed by an eye roll, so just don’t. Fact is, even if he doesn’t win this race, his year is a total success.

“Our Derby record is not great,” Pletcher told Tom Pedulla in an interview on America’s Best Racing. “We have run a lot of horses. Some have run well, some of them haven’t. So having a win is huge. I think one more would be icing on the cake and hopefully some day we can do that.”

The Pletcher Industrial Complex doesn’t need to win this race: reaching the race is a victory. How can you hate on a guy for not winning a race when there are 20 relatively inexperienced young horses running in the longest race of their lives in the front of biggest crowd they’ve ever seen/heard? Especially when you realize that nearly half of the horses he has brought to the Derby are bombs—and if wasn’t for the allure of the Derby would do a hard pass on this race—whose only chance at winning is an off-track, a favorable post and a Louisiana-fast Cajun in the irons.

The KD is the ultimately crapshoot. Traffic, the inexplicable randomness of a post draw (sidebar: if we’re going to go through all the trouble of a points system to rank these horses and add some juice to the prep season, shouldn’t the connections of the horses with the most points get to choose their post? Like earning home-field advantage? Nothing like getting snubbed with Post 1, facing certain collision with the fence, when you’re best the horse.

The argument then becomes if the horse is talented enough he’ll win regardless. Tell that to Lookin at Lucky. Anyway.)

Then there are the other moving parts like the various running styles of each horse. There are no rules that suggests a certain number of speed horses, raters or closers get into the field. We’d all agree that a horse that can rate/ relax/track the leaders does two important Derby-winning things: Rations energy and dictates his path through traffic.

Pletcher has two horses, at the very least, that can do just that. Patch, the one-eyed monster, has a luscious pedigree. Union Rags, his sire, won the 2012 Belmont Stakes and his dam is by A.P. Indy, a Belmont Stakes winner and sire of all things stamina.

Patch finished second in the Louisiana Derby, which in and of itself doesn’t make you want to do handsprings across the Churchill infield. The Bayou route to the Derby is littered with slow horses.

The thing is Patch turned in a sparkling workout in company over the Churchill dirt, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.20 with a serious gallop out. Pletcher could very well be using the Derby as a Belmont Stakes prep with this colt.

He didn’t race as a twoyear-old and that violates Isaac Newton’s heretofore unrevealed Fourth Law of Motion: A Derby horse who doth not run as a juvenile, fails to don roses. Look it up.

Is Patch so talented that he can be the first since Apollo to win this raced without having race at two? Meh. Always Dreaming, lame name aside, won the Florida Derby. He worked a superbly swift five furlongs by himself in 59.60, running like he was being chased by a sabertooth.

“He’s a good-feeling colt and his energy level is off the charts,” Pletcher said in a Churchill Downs release. “The trick for us is to keep him focused.”

Did he drill too hard? That’s always the question with these sub-one-minute or sub-48-second workouts. Plenty of horses fly over that Churchill loam, and it’s that grand signifier that they like the surface. That’s as big an indication as any. Always Dreaming’s sire, Bodemeister, set the pace in the

2012 Kentucky Derby and nearly held on to win. Getting to the front of the Kentucky Derby field is the only way to take traffic out of the equation, and maybe Always Dreaming will do just that.

Tapwrit, winner of the Tampa Bay Derby and fifth in the Blue Grass, marks Pletcher’s third arrow in the quiver. Should Pletcher lose with all three, he’ll fall to 1-for48. If he wins, he’ll be 2-for-48; no matter what light you shine

on it, it’s still a murky record on paper, but it should be seen as this: The guy knows how to get a horse to the Derby. He validated his plan and 2018 already looks bright.

Madigan: City 2016 FY Year Ends in A Strong Position Commissioner of Finance Michele Madigan reported Saratoga Springs closed the 2016 fiscal year in a strong financial position.

Unaudited year-end figures reveal a moderate annual operating deficit of $1.056 million - in large part driven by a $750,000 payment to settle a suit filed by The Anderson Group more than 10 years ago, Madigan said. The unaudited operating deficit, excluding this payment, was $306,000, or 0.695 percent of the $44 million 2016 Adopted Budget.

Actual 2016 revenue collected totaled $42,691,435.

Actual 2016 expenditures totaled $43,747,818.

Vandalized Statues Restored and Returned to Congress Park The “Day” and “Night” Urns and “Pan” statue in the Italian Gardens have been restored and were installed in Congress Park last Friday, said Department of Works Commissioner Anthony “Skip”

Scirocco. The urns and statue were vandalized last year.

The Day and Night Urns inspired by the individual marble reliefs “Day” and “Night” by artist Bertel Thorvaldsen - were originally placed in Congress Park more than a century ago.

Improvements were made in the urn bases to increase stability for the cast-iron pieces, along with new drainage to prevent longterm water damage. Additional stability was added to the base of the Pan statue to prevent any future vandalism, Scirocco said.

Local Revolving Loan Funds Boost Small Businesses

by Larry Goodwin Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Ryen Van Hall definitely has helpers in his effort to revive the local alcohol distilling industry. He produces the strong stuff, like vodka and whiskey, in a modern warehouse off Geyser Road.

In opening his Upstate Distilling Company a year ago, Van Hall first employed the enthusiasm and scientific curiosity of Glenna Joyce.

Joyce is a Skidmore College graduate who is already well versed in the process of aging alcohol in wooden barrels made of oak.

She also delights in the process of cleaning the company’s impressive copper pot still. When that job is done, Joyce says, “It looks like a brand new penny.”

“I’m constantly learning new things about the industry,” she adds.

Van Hall also gets lots of assistance from two minority owners.

His significant other, Lindsay Richardson, serves as the company’s artistic director.

And Todd Gordon, a reputable Wall Street investment analyst, is listed on Van Hall’s website (www.upstatedistilling.com) as a marketing specialist.

Gordon posted a statement praising Van Hall’s “vision to operate the first distillery in Saratoga since Prohibition” for being “perfectly in line with the booming international bull market in handcrafted American spirits.”

Most recently, Van Hall received a boost from the City of Saratoga Springs, which offered a modest loan to his

Upstate Distilling Co. that funded various upgrades to the production facility.

“I personally bankrolled the whole project,” Van Hall says. But unanticipated costs can arise when starting any small business, he added.

Shelby Schneider, director of business retention and expansion at the Saratoga County Prosperity Partnership, was instrumental in bringing Van Hall’s business plan to the attention of city officials who manage its revolving loan fund.

That city fund is “a great little tool and more people need to know about it,” she said this week.

According to Bradley Birge, the city’s planning and economic development administrator, the revolving loan fund has been provided through a federal grant program for many years.

Federal rules stipulate that loans to small businesses can range between $25,000 and $75,000 and they must be tied to certain levels of job creation.

Birge stated that Van Hall was approved for a $50,000 loan. The Salem-based R.S. Taylor and Sons brewery and AgroChem Inc., in the Grande

Industrial Park, were each recently loaned $75,000 for local business expansion, he said.

R.S. Taylor and Sons is planning to open a taproom in Saratoga Springs for its distinctive farm-made products.

“There are so many resources in the community that are available to small businesses,” Birge explained, pointing to related programs offered by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce.

Schneider said the terms of revolving loans are negotiable and it takes local

companies an average of 5 to 7 years to pay them back. Small business owners from across Saratoga County can contact her office to begin the application process.

Schneider added that she works closely with Birge in performing “due diligence” and credit checks to review fund applicants in the city program.

“We do our best,” she said.

James Lee, a financial planner and administrator for the Town of Greenfield’s revolving loan fund, said a pool of money totaling $1.4 million is presently available to lend in Greenfield.

Current borrowers vary “in size and type,” Lee said, and they include Putnam Brook, the Greenfield Veterinary Clinic, Saratoga Health and Wellness and the Post Cafe.

He indicated that loans of $530,000 remain outstanding.

“We’re always looking for new businesses,” Lee said.

Van Hall expressed his gratitude for the extra support.

He says Upstate Distilling Co. is now “growing at a nice, organic pace” with all of the financing and right individuals in place.

“Every year it just gets better,” Van Hall said of the two whiskey blends he produces, during a quick tour of the facility.

This summer, he explained, two more staff members may be hired, possibly by the time production starts on Upstate Distilling Co.’s third whiskey blend.

Hoffman Car Wash Opens New Location SARATOGA SPRINGS — Hoffman Car Wash has opened its 21st location and its first in the city.

The facility, which is located near the corner of Ballston Avenue (Route 50) and Northline Road, just north of Ballston Spa, features first-ofits-kind car wash technology.

Hoffman Car Wash designed and locally fabricated four new robotic cleaning systems that improve quality and increase efficiency. The automated equipment – the most advanced in the industry – was engineered to provide the highest quality wash throughout the 140-foot tunnel.

The location is designed for customer convenience. When entering the property, drivers will be directed to two automatic payment lanes. A radio-frequency identification (RFID) system will read automatically Unlimited Wash Club Members’ RFID tags for easy and quick access.

Single-pay customers will select their wash via automated tellers before entering the wash tunnel.

The facility also includes a 14-station, 100-horsepower, free vacuum system similar to Hoffman Car Wash’s Troy and Amsterdam locations. Additionally, the Saratoga Springs car wash is equipped with 2,000,000 BTUs of heated drying, the most powerful drying unit in the company’s 52-year history.

Dig Into Gardening

by Megin Potter for Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA — Get to the root of what makes a garden grow at a new workshop offered for the first time this year.

“We’ll be digging into the meat and potatoes of what works in our region,” said presenter Sue Ann DuBois. Master Gardener, co-owner of Chip’s Landscaping, and author of the Garden Goddess Sense & Sustainability blog, Du Bois strives to create functional gardens that are balanced and joyful.

Plus, you’ll taste it.

The all-day workshop, being held at Longfellows Inn & Conference Center, includes a demonstration by their groundbreaking culinary staff, followed by a freshly prepared luncheon

in the comfortable atmosphere and pastoral setting of their 1915 restored barn.

“The venue is the perfect location in terms of combining healthy eating and how-to-grow information,” said DuBois.

Presentations by DuBois and Shane Daley, Master Gardener, and Olde Bryan Inn herb garden designer, will be covering topics such as perennials for the all-season garden, selecting and growing herbs, and how to blend perennials and edibles in the garden.

Garden marketplace resources, recipes, and networking opportunities will also be available.

“We’ll be opening up the dialogue to the audience to find out their needs and interests, outlining the use of perennials and herbs, and then taking it a step further to discuss how to blend them into the landscaping,” said DuBois.

They’ll also cover new ways to get more out of smaller spaces when gardening. This involves combining careful plant selections with specific materials, and design techniques that are targeted to do well in this climate.

“Don’t always go to the internet, the reality is, it’s not region-specific.

Each one of us has had years of experiences, with successes and failures, so we know what works,” said DuBois.

They’ll also be discussing the Plant a Row for the Hungry Initiative in Saratoga County.

For the first time this year, the program, which encourages home growers to share their abundant harvests with those in need, is expanding into the southern tier of the county with donations being accepted by, and distribution through, the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center.

“It’s a good forum on how you can take a small piece of your garden and give back to the community,” said DuBois.

Dig into Gardening will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Longfellows Inn & Conference Center, 500 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs.

Painting with Plants

A gardener is an artist who uses dirt as their canvas and living plants as their palette.

“Every time I create a design, it’s fun, different, and unique,” said Suzanne Balet Haight of Balet Flowers & Design. Her floral arrangements have become a staple at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, have been on display at weddings and events, and thrive in private backyards around the region.

“We focus on creating texture and getting color in the garden all the time, based on what each individual wants.

Sometimes it’s with new plants, rearranging, digging, and dividing existing plants, or just help with weeding,” she said.

Grown to Garden Acquainted early-on to growing things on her family’s farm, she was introduced to floral design in college. She graduated with a degree in horticulture in 1993 and by 1995 renamed the farm Balet Flowers & Design and erected a small greenhouse for growing flowers on the property.

people, including her parents and husband, produce a vibrant selection of flowering shrubs, from 200 to 250 varieties of perennials, 150 kinds of annuals, herbs, and more than 80 types of vegetables for sale at their nursery.

Amazing Selection “The selection is so great that it creates interest – there’s always a new one to try,” said Balet Haight. New this year is the Indigo Cherry Drop tomatoes, which have a purple tint and are bursting with sweet flavor.

The combination planters available, including the “pizza garden”, the “salad garden”, and the “Thai herb garden” make it easy to harvest a whole meal from just one pot.

“I like to try to create ideas by thinking, ‘What would I like on my deck, and why would I want it there?’” said Balet Haight.

Pick-Your-Own Flowers For the first time this year, Balet Flowers and Design will also be offering pick-your-own flowers.

“Come out, walk through the garden, enjoy, and choose your own flowers,” said Balet Haight.

Planting for Success

Dig the hole wide but not too deep.

by Peter Bowden for Saratoga TODAY I’ve seen a lot of shrubs and trees that have died within a few years after getting planted and a pattern has become obvious. 90 percent of those that failed were planted too deep. When the crown of the plant is covered with dirt, the plant will eventually die.

Make the planting hole a little bit wider than the root ball. Dig only as deep as the root ball or the pot that contains the roots.

Place the

plant into the hole and check the planting depth by laying a stick across the hole. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball should line up with the surrounding soil. If the hole is too deep, add compost or soil to build up the bottom of the planting hole.

Then simply fill in the rest of the hole.

This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make a big mistake. When you dig a hole, then fill it with a large root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. Many will opt to pile it up around the trunk

or stem. DON’T DO IT! It has the same negative effect as planting too deeply. If the stem above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system

Instead of piling the extra soil against the trunk, build a dish-shaped dike or berm away from the stem of the plant to collect water and direct it down to the root system. Remember, you haven’t planted too deeply as long as

Take care when applying mulch as well.

Piling mulch against the trunk is the same as burying the stem and slowly kills the plant. Thanks for the read!

Market Creates Community at High Rock Park

Saturdays, 9 to 1 Wednesdays 3 to 6 High Rock Park Shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday May 6th, Saratoga Mayor Joanne Yepsen will cut a ribbon at High Rock Park to officially open the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s summer season. With her will be farmers and other vendors, volunteers and staff, artists and musicians, community service providers, dignitaries and other guests.

The brief ceremony captures a sense of how the market twice a week from May through October creates a sense of community that is vibrant, festive, and supportive.

“Community is our sustenance,” says market director Julia Howard. “It brings us all together.”

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market started in 1978 with starter plants and produce. Over the years, meats and dairy products, prepared foods, wool and fiber, household cleaners, gift items, and crafts were added the offerings.

For farmers and other vendors, the market is a vital source of income. But the market also is much more.

And new vendors – among them Zoe Burghard Ceramics, Freddy’s Rockin’ Hummus, The Smoothie Shoppe, Dickinson’s Delights, and Slate Valley and Nettle Meadow farms – will join the market’s regulars.

Happy Cinco de Mayo Directions Mash the garlic in the bottom of the molcajete (lavastone mortar) using the rejolote (lava-stone pestle).

Then crush the cilantro leaves.

Mix in pulp from avocado and follow with a scattering of the rock crystals. Pour in lime juice, add cucumbers, and give a few good twists of pepper.

Stir together and serve from the molcajete (or any mixing bowl). Place a sampling onto round tortilla chips and top with a sprinkle of cotija (a white Mexican cow’s milk cheese somewhat similar to Parmesan in texture).

So my Foodie Friends you are ready and if you see my 26 year old son around town just say Holy Guacamole, moley, moley and he’ll know what you mean!

He was influenced by the Austin Powers movie and would walk around the house exclaiming: Mom is making Holy Moley, Guacamoley, moley, moley!!!

Among the world’s oldest culinary tools, volcanic rock mortars and pestles like these have been used by great cooks for thousands of years. Guacamole, a dip made from avocados, is originally from Mexico. The name is derived from two Aztec Nahuatl words—ahuacatl (avocado) and molli (sauce).

All you really need to make guacamole is ripe avocados and salt. After that, a little lime or lemon juice—a splash of acidity to balance the richness of the avocado. Then comes chopped cilantro, chiles, onion, and tomato, if you want.

The trick to making perfect guacamole is using good, ripe avocados. Check for ripeness by gently pressing the outside of the avocado. If there is no give, the avocado is not ripe yet and will not taste good. If there is a little give, the avocado is ripe. If there is a lot of give, the avocado may be past ripe and not good. In this case, taste test first before using.

Guocamole de Molcajete recipe: Ingredients

• 1 large garlic clove • 12 leaves cilantro • 1 large ripe but firm Haas avocado • 12 crystals rock salt • 1 tablespoon Mexican lime juice • 1/3 cup peeled, deseeded, finely chopped and drained cucumbers • Freshly ground mixed peppercorns (black, green, white, pink, Szechuan) • Round tortilla chips • Grated cotija, as an accompaniment

Bethesda Episcopal Church: Lunch and Learn On Saturday, May 13 at noon the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation will host “The History and Architecture of the Bethesda Episcopal Church” presentation and boxed lunch as part of its annual Historic Homes Tour. This will provide a rare opportunity to view the stunning interior of the historic church that was designed by Richard Upjohn and learn more about its history and architecture while enjoying a boxed lunch provided by The Barrelhouse.

Richard Upjohn, who designed Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City - a National Historic Landmark was hired to design the church in 1841. That same year the first stone was laid and the Gothic Revival style church was completed in 1844. Mary Sanders Shartle, author and poet, and Gordon Boyd, long-time member of the church and Chair of the Building Committee, will not only discuss the history of Bethesda Episcopal Church but also the Gothic features and symbolism throughout the church as well as the plans for the new parish house that will be constructed and the restoration of the historic church. “Bethesda is pleased to be a part of this year’s Historic Homes Tour, allowing an opportunity for us to showcase our church to the public and raise awareness about our efforts to preserve this wonderful building,” said Boyd.

The “Lunch and Learn” event takes place at Bethesda Episcopal Church, 41 Washington Street.

Tickets for the “Lunch and Learn” event must be purchased in advance and cost $20 for SSPF members and $25 for non-members. For those who are unable to attend the Lunch and Learn event at 12pm, the Bethesda Episcopal Church will also be featured on the Historic Homes Tour that takes place the same day from 10am to 4pm. Motherless Daughters Gathering On Saturday, May 13 at Noon, there will be a gathering for women who have lost their mothers at the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church, 24 Circular St. Saratoga Springs. Mendelssohn’s Elijah Thrill to the drama of a fiery and dynamic performance of Mendelssohn’s masterpiece “Elijah” with the Burnt Hills Oratorio Society and Orchestra.

Administrative Specialist Volunteer Needed AARP Tax-Aide, a national volunteer organization that provides free income tax preparation to low-to-middle income families, is seeking help to fill a key volunteer position that will oversee administrative activity to support the organization’s Eastern New York region.

The volunteer position of Administrative Specialist (ADS) would be a member of the State Management Team for AARP TaxAide and be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all administrative procedures, and assist District Coordinators with their administrative responsibilities. Applicants for the ADS position should be organized, detail-oriented, and computer literate. No knowledge of tax preparation is required, and extensive training will be provided.

2017 Saratoga County Fair Announces Highlights of Summertime Tradition BALLSTON SPA — Plans are starting to take shape for the 176th Anniversary season of the Saratoga County Fair.

The fair, which will be held July 18-23, will offer seven stages of entertainment from all over the country, animal displays, domestic to exotic, two nights of pro rodeo, two nights of demo derby, plus modified tractor pulls, and a day full of four-wheel drive truck pulls.

Live music will be performed daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and craft beer and wine fans will be offered special private label Judging Stand Ale and the private label Saratoga County Fair wine.

Kelly’s Angels Seeks Runners and Walkers For Mother-Lovin’ Day 5K SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kelly’s Angels is looking for people eager to exercise and have fun in the name of helping children touched by cancer.

The Wilton-based charity is preparing for its popular MotherLovin’ Day 5K Run/Walk, Sunday, May 14 at the Saratoga Spa State Park. Race day registration and packet pickup runs from 7:308:30 a.m. at the Orenda Pavilion.

Kelly’s Angels was founded in 2008 by WNYT reporter Mark Mulholland in memory of his wife, Kelly, who passed away in 2007 after a battle with cancer.

Kelly’s Angels provides gifts to children under the age of 18 who have lost a parent or sibling to cancer. The donations, called “Fun Grants,” are as varied as the kids whom Kelly’s Angels serves — from the purchase of a guitar, a night out at a fancy restaurant, to trips to big league games.

“We hold this event on Mother’s Day because it honors Kelly as a devoted mother, wife and revered teacher who loved children with all of her heart,” said Kelly’s Angels President Mark Mulholland, in a statement.

Local Actors Guild of Saratoga to Stage “Angels in America” SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Local Actors Guild of Saratoga will stage six performances of “Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches,” at Saratoga Arts Center this month.

“Part One” of Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer-Prize and Tony-Awardwinning exploration depicts how the AIDS crisis impacted fictional characters in the 1980s.

“Millennium Approaches” introduces the characters as they embark on their respective journeys through the epidemic.

Set in 1980’s New York City, a gay man is abandoned by his lover when he contracts the AIDS virus, and a closeted Mormon lawyer’s marriage

to his pill-popping wife stalls. Other characters include the infamous McCarthy-ite lawyer Roy Cohn, Ethel Rosenberg, a former drag queen who works as a nurse, and an angel.

Author Celebrates release of New Book at Northshire

Circus Smirkus Returns to Saratoga Springs in July SARATOGA SPRINGS — Tickets are on sale for Circus Smirkus - the acclaimed international youth circus – which returns to the outdoor soccer field at the Saratoga Casino Hotel for four performances on July 11-12.

Performances are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day. Tickets are $25 for adults 13 and older and $20 for children 2-12. Children younger than two are free on an adult’s lap. All proceeds raised will go directly to the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs.

This year’s tour continues the tradition of Smirkus themebased shows with Midnight at the Museum. As an added attraction,

the 2017 performances celebrate a milestone: The Circus Smirkus 30th Anniversary Big Top Tour.

Midnight at the Museum creates the excitement of a wild and wonderful adventure through the hallowed halls of a magical museum.

Attendees will embark on an enchanted journey with astonishing aerialists, courageous clowns, and wily wire-walkers as they explore a museum that springs to life when the clock strikes midnight.

Thirty budding circus stars, ages 12 to 18, bring youthful exuberance and polished circus skills from across the country and the world. The 2017 performance

troupe hails from thirteen states.

The Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs first brought Circus Smirkus to Saratoga in 2007 as a fundraising and outreach event. Circus Smirkus is a non-profit, award-winning international youth circus founded with the mission of promoting the skills, culture and traditions of the traveling circus and inspiring youth to engage in life-changing adventures in the circus arts.

Author to Discuss the Mysterious Burning of The Piping Rock at Library

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Author Alexandria MarzanoLesnevich, will celebrate the release of her new book “The Fact of A Body: A Murder and a Memoir,” at Northshire Bookstore on Broadway at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17.

Blurbage: The genre-defying book mixes memoir with true crime to show us how the crimes of others can help us explore our own traumas, and that no matter how objective it seems, the law, ultimately, is just another way of telling a story.

Marzano-Lesnevich discovered the true crime story that would haunt her for years at the age of 25 while working as an intern at the Louisiana Capital Assistance Center. A law student dedicated to fighting the death penalty, she was shocked when she watched a video of

Ricky Langley confessing to the murder of a young boy. All she could think was: I want this man to die. Her reaction sent her on a journey to learn everything she could about the case, and about her own past. The event is free and open to the public.

Yaddo Saratoga Springs Benefit to Feature Author Terry McMillan

Manor Home to Close for Two-year Renovation SARATOGA SPRINGS — Yaddo’s annual summer benefit will this year feature Terry McMillan, best-selling author of “Waiting to Exhale,” “A Day Late and A Dollar Short,” “The Interruption of Everything,” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” among others. The event will feature a lively discussion and a chance to ask McMillan questions about her successful career, and will take place 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 22.

The proceeds from the benefit play a crucial role in ensuring the artists’ residency program

continues to flourish. More than 6,500 individuals have created works at Yaddo – from literature and paintings, to photography, sculpture, music, dance and film – that have helped shape culture and touched millions of lives.

This year, Yaddo is hosting a series of benefits to celebrate writers and artists at exclusive private dinners and performances that will be held in New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco. and feature writers such as Jennifer Egan, Jay McInerney, and A.M. Homes as

evening hosts and speakers.

The estate also announced that much-needed restoration of the 124-year-old Mansion will start this summer. As the manor home will be closed for two years, the organization says: “we will be able to enjoy and experience another area of the extensive Yaddo property, with a tented event in a location rarely seen by the public.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A Zumbathon recently held at Saratoga Springs High School raised around $3,300 for the American Diabetes Association’s

(ADA) Tour de Cure cycling event.

The two-hour event drew over 100 participants and was led by Capital Region Zumbathon instructors.

Kivort Steel Cycling team, one of

Tour de Cure’s biggest fundraising teams, underwrote the costs of the event, allowing 100 percent of the proceeds to go towards supporting the ADA’s mission.

Saratoga Girls Lacrosse Puts Up Two More Wins

WILTON — Ava Dallas, 14, of Wilton competed in the 2017 Region 6 Women’s Gymnastics Championships on April 22 in Springfield, MA, winning silver and bronze medals in the Level 8 Senior A Division in the process. Competing for Ballston Spa’s Stepping Stars Gymnastics, Dallas scored a personal best

9.575 on the vault to take home the silver medal. On the balance board, she took home the bronze with a score of 9.250. Her overall score for the event was 36.525.

Moving forward, she is working on improving her skills for the move up to Level 9, and one day hopes to compete collegiately at the University of Florida.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Varsity Girls Lacrosse team continued their dominant season with two more victories, one league and one nonleague. In an April 28 league game against Bethlehem, the

Blue Streaks put up a close 15-13 victory against the visiting team, making the team 7-0 in league games. The following day, April 29, the Blue Streaks faced a visiting team from Minnechaug High School

in Wilbraham, MA, putting a much more definitive 13-6 win.

This makes the team 2-1 in non-league games. The team’s only loss, league or non-league, came against Niskayuna in a non-league match.

In individual events, the team put up 29 first-place finishes.

“They did really well,” Kim Hewitt, director of gymnastics for the Saratoga Regional YMCA, said. “They held up against some tough competition.

In team competition, the Springettes entered four teams.

The Level 7 and Level 5 teams placed first, the Level 4 team placed second, and the Level 3 team placed fourth.

“My Level 7 team has done a really good job this year,” Hewitt said. “They’ve been

consistently placing very, very high, and they had a great day.”

The highest all-around score for the whole team was Abby Moller, Level 8, with a combined score of 35.8, followed by Katy Hawthorne, Level 7, with a score of 35.45. Another notable performance at the meet came from Marianna Nasta, Level 4, who claimed first place in all four individual events.

Going into the event, Hewitt had her athletes focused on repetition of their routines, making sure that they would be able to consistently get things right. Moving forward, the team will be competing at the Northeast Regionals from May 13-15. The focus on repetition remains the staple of their practices leading up to it. This year, regionals will take place in Waterville, ME. Around 40

teams from the northeast states will be competing, amounting to around 1,200 gymnasts.

“We’re really excited,” Hewitt

said about going to regionals.

“Our Level 5 and Level 7 teams are really strong, so we’re hoping to place in the all-around. It’s

a little harder with 40 teams, but we’re hoping for those teams to do really well.”

Tour of the Battenkill 2017 GREENWICH — The 13th annual Tour of the Battenkill Pro/ Am cycling race will be held on May 20 this year, starting at the Washington County Fairgrounds

The Tour of the Battenkill is the largest one-day Pro/Am cycling race in the country, and will see over 3,000 professional and amateur cyclists riding across over 65 miles of Battenkill Valley terrain.

2017 Saratoga Springs Horse Show SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 57th Annual Saratoga Springs Horse show will commence on May 3, and will run from Wednesday to Sunday each week until concluding on May 21.

Tickets cost $4 per person, with children under 12 getting in for free. This season will also mark the show’s 40th and final year on the grounds of Yaddo. The show this year will include hunters, jumpers, and equitation classes held in three rings. Attendees can expect warm-ups and competition to begin between 7:30-8 a.m. each day, and conclude around 5:00 p.m. Proceeds from the show will go to the Capital Fund of Saratoga County, which over the years has provided over $256,000 in assistance to 66 local charities. Little Big Hitters: Saratoga Wilton Youth Baseball Begins

by Thomas Kika Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — It was a new beginning for little league baseball in Saratoga Springs last weekend.

Saratoga Wilton Youth Baseball, a new organization formed from a merger of Saratoga American Little League and Wilton Youth Baseball, held its inaugural Opening Day on April 29 at Gavin Park with an event that was as much a party as it was a little league meet. The day began at 8:30 a.m. with an “MLB Pitch, Hit, and Run” event on the softball field,

which repeated at 12:30 a.m.

From there, the young players in attendance gathered for a “player parade” at 11:00 a.m.

Following a barbeque lunch courtesy of The 99 Restaurant, games finally began at 1:00 p.m. The league currently has over 500 players, ages 4-16, registered to play.

This merger leaves Saratoga Springs with two little leagues: Saratoga Wilton Youth Baseball, and Saratoga Little League, formerly known as Saratoga National Little League. Saratoga Wilton will play its games at both Gavin Park in Wilton and East Side Recreation on Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs.
