NYRA Turf War!

SARATOGA SPRINGS — In the waning hours of the New York State Legislature’s final week of session, the Senate and the Assembly both passed bipartisan legislation led by Senator Kathy Marchione and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner that would re-privatize The New York Racing Association (NYRA). It has received wide approval from the racing industry, including the NYRA board, as well as numerous state and local

elected officials, businesses, racing fans and advocates.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has threatened to veto it. He put forth his own privatization proposal that would keep NYRA’s reins within his influence through the board selection process, including his choice of NYRA chair for the first three years, and transfer Video Lottery Terminal money away from racing.

The Concerned Citizens for Saratoga Racing, a committee of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, held a

press conference on Wednesday, June 15 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 86 Congress Street, to update the media and public with the status, plans and commentary on the legislation that affects racing, breeding, jobs, tourism and local business, as well as the future of Saratoga Race Course and the economy of the Upstate NY region.

A Star (Maker) is Born!

BALLSTON SPA — Audrey Poitras, Saratoga County Fair Director, is quite talented herself, having been involved in Public Relations and Talent acquisition since 1998. When the former Talent coordinator was ready to pass the baton, Audrey, who was already a devotee and contributor to the Fair, was asked if “she knew talent.” She quickly answered, no, and then realized she was being asked if she knew talent, as a way of asking her to take over.

Not being one to say no, Audrey quickly agreed and a star was born, so to speak. When she first entered the field she learned that the job wasn’t just about recruiting talent. She started at ground level, with an open mind, and her efforts have been rewarded.

Assisted by dear friends Sue Penny, Marie Hettrich and Midge McHale, they took on the job of recreating the talent competition from the ground up. They didn’t want to do it anyway but their own, and it sure has been rewarded. They handle registration, mailings, the press, creating the judging forms, everything from set-up to tear-down.

When Audrey took over the talent division in 2001, there were 85 contestants. In 2002 it grew to 119, then 135 in 2003, as the event became more and more popular.

Audrey has now stepped back from being Talent Contest Coordinator, feeling it was time to give someone else as enthusiastic an opportunity to become more closely involved.

As Superintendent of Talent, though, she still has the competition close to her heart.

“I could talk about the Talent Department endlessly. I really love being involved and I am still in touch with many of the past winners,” she said. Former winner turned vocal coach, Cassandra Boucher, said about Audrey, “She is such a nice person and worked very hard to make the talent competition so successful. She and her team put together a good show. I won the competition but later worked with Audrey when I brought my students to compete.

She always remembers everyone’s names when we would visit, she made it very personal.”

Judging the talent at the Fair is an interesting proposition. You have anywhere from one to 20 plus Continued on page 28.

Jack A. Bacchia, 25, of Scotia pled on Monday, June 6 to the felony charge of burglary in the third degree. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18.

Felicia M. Fowler, 24, of Stafford was sentenced on Monday, June 6 to six months in jail and five years of probation, after pleading guilty to the felony charge of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree.

Sherman Rituno, 41, of Saratoga Springs pled on Tuesday, June 7 to the felony charge of possessing a sexual performance by a child. Sentencing is scheduled for August 9.

ARRESTS: Mitchell D. Breault, 40, of Glens Falls was arrested on May 26 and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree, driving while intoxicated, driving with a BAC more than .08 of .1 percent, the traffic violation of failure to signal a turn and one equipment violation.

Richard B. Tucker, 59, of Saratoga Springs was arrested on May 27 and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree and one equipment violation.

Thomas F. Cornell, 20, of Clifton Park was arrested on Friday, May 27 and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

6 Constance (Connie) E. Rossley GREENWICH — Constance (Connie) E. Rossley died December 30, 2015 in Daytona Beach, FL. Born December 5, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Valfred and Grace Chambers Peterson.

She graduated in 1947 from Greenwich High School and was employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 34 years on their clerical staff. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenwich and also a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Daytona Beach.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William J. Rossley; brother, William Peterson, stepson, Stephen Rossley, and grandson, Ryan Rossley.

Survivors include her stepson, Richard Rossley of Stony Creek; daughter-in-law Maureen Rossley of Saratoga Springs, brother George Peterson and his wife Claire, nephew, Mark Peterson, and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 2016 in the Greenwich Cemetery, with Rev. Chip Strickland, officiating. All are welcome to attend.

Dina Marie Fittipaldi SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dina Marie Fittipaldi went to be with God on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, following a short illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends who Dina had touched in many ways throughout her full and very memorable life.

Born March 22, 1975 to Kevin and Margaret Fittipaldi in Albany, Dina attended Lake Avenue Elementary School then Saratoga Springs Senior High School and on to SUNY Cobleskill. Dina was a long-time employee of Royal Care.

Dina was predeceased by her father Kevin; paternal grandparents Charles Fittipaldi and Helen O’Rourke; maternal grandparents Leo and Gertrude Manley; aunts Carol Manley and Ann Marie Fittipaldi.

Survivors include her loving mother Margaret Fittipaldi of Saratoga Springs, brothers Sean Fittipaldi of Philadelphia, PA, twin brother Dominick Fittipaldi of Bay Point, CA and Charlie Preece of Berwick, LA, aunts Mary DeSantis of Saratoga Springs, Jean Papa (James) of Fonda, Barbara Rossi of East Meadow, NY and Charlene Senzon of Long Beach, NY, uncles John Fittipaldi (Andrea) of NY and Charles Fittipaldi (Yolanda) of Warrensburg, cousins Cathy DeSantis of Fort Edward, Diane Rossi (Timmy), Christine DeSantis and Rob DeSantis all of Saratoga Springs, Joe DeSantis of Midway, KY, and Krin Assletta (Paul) of Texas.

Helen L. (DuPont) Tragni Ford SARATOGA SPRINGS — Helen L. (DuPont) Tragni Ford passed away Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Saratoga Hospital. She was 80.

Born on April 30, 1936 in Schenectady, she is a daughter of the late Alfred and Alexina (Caisse) DuPont and was a 1954 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. Employed for 19 years at Upstate Loan (Adirondack Finance), she also worked as a secretary for the Saratoga Springs City School District prior to her retirement. A devout Catholic, she was an active member and communicant of St. Clement’s Church, was a volunteer member of the parish’s Resurrection Choir and had also served as the parish secretary for many years.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Douglas J. Ford, her siblings, Alfred, Richard and Harold DuPont, Marion Muscanell, Clara Lautenbach and Irene Lacy.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane Baxter of Saratoga Springs and Susan Mallory of South Glens Falls, six grandchildren, Amber Towers, Sarah Galusha, Emily Baxter, Christopher (Erin) Mallory, Barry (Brittany) Mallory and Mandi (Richard) Strassburg, nine great-grandchildren, her twin sister, Alice Kress of Glenville and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends gathered to pay their respects on Tuesday, June 14 at the William J. Burke and Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway in Saratoga Springs.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Burial followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave. in Saratoga Springs.

Jerry E. Carpenter, Jr. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jerry E. Carpenter Jr., age 20, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 one day before his 21st birthday at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his family.

He was born on June 9, 1995 in Saratoga Springs, the son of Jerry E. Carpenter Sr. and Lynn Rituno

Carpenter.

Jerry graduated from Saratoga Springs High School, class of 2016. He went through so much and hardly ever complained.

He was a tough young man with a brave heart and innocent soul. It was because of these qualities that Jerry touched so many lives and spread love and comfort to all those who knew him.

He enjoyed watching WWE wrestling, playing video games, and he especially loved spending time with his family and friends.

Jerry is survived by his father, Jerry Carpenter Sr., mother, Lynn Rituno Carpenter, sisters, Kayla Carpenter and Cheyenne Carpenter, grandmother, Luella Rituno, many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather; Joseph A. Rituno.

A funeral service was held on Monday, June 13, 2016 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave. in Saratoga Springs. Calling hours were held prior to the service at the funeral home.

Interment was held at Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs following the service.

Janice Carol Eldred SPRINGFIELD, MA — Janice Carol Eldred died peacefully in the early morning hours of May 4, 2016 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. She had been held in the continual embrace of touch and song by her family and friends throughout the previous two days.

Her sisters were by her side when she passed gently into the light.

Born on January 12, 1961 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, Janice was the daughter of the late June and William Eldred of Hoosick Falls. Janice also became a beloved member of the family of the late John and Hazel Eggers and spent much of her growing-up years in Castleton, NY. She graduated valedictorian

Week of June 17– June 23, 2016 of her high school class and went on to study at Drew University and New York University. When she discovered the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT, she felt she had found the perfect fit. It was at S.I.T. that she entered the World Issues Program and completed a semester internship in India. Her experiences there with the Auroville community and the Tamil culture had a profound effect on her life.

Janice’s interest in travel began in childhood, camping with the Eggers as they explored the country together. Between college semesters, she headed off to jobs in Europe that allowed her to travel through many countries, being particularly fond of her time spent working and living in Switzerland. In the years after her work and travels in India, she journeyed on many an Amtrak train to return to the Pacific Northwest, the west coast, and her beloved Southwest. Her travels also returned her to Spain and to Mexico and the artisan communities of Oaxaca. Janice was never happier than when she had a bag packed, visualizing her next adventure.

Janice is survived by her sister Faye Mihuta (James) of Saratoga Springs, sister June Horton (Allan) of Wilmington, MA, niece Alie Mihuta of Washington, DC, cousin Lillian Hewitt (Kent Goodermote) of Berlin, NY, and her extended family.

Robert J. Hewitt GLENS FALLS — Robert J. Hewitt, 81, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the Pines in Glens Falls.

Born October 11, 1934 in Victory Mills, NY, he was the son of the late Frederick J Hewitt Sr. and Mary S. Hewitt.

In his younger years he was well known in Schuylerville, the neighborhood in which he lived. He was popular in the winter with a snow shovel, in the spring with a rake, and in the summer with the lawn mower and the rake again.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick J. Hewitt Jr. and an infant brother, William Hewitt.

Survivors include two 2 sisters, Joan A. Fitch and Mary E. Lamora, a brother, Daniel J. Hewitt, and several nieces and nephews.

Roger J. Wade MALTA – Roger J. Wade passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 12, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Born on March 25, 1923 in Malden, MA, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Powell) Wade. Roger was married for 68 years to the love of his life, the late Dorothy M. Wade, who passed away ten months ago. He grew up in Boston, MA and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served as a B-17 bomber pilot, flying 33 combat missions over Europe in 1944 - 1945. After the war, he went to work for General Electric in Lynn and Fitchburg, MA as a master machinist, rising quickly to management, and retiring in 1983.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his brother Edward, and his two sisters, Gertrude Wade and Esther Fraser.

Audrey Toolan SARATOGA SPRINGS — Audrey Toolan passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at the Wesley Nursing Home. She was 84 years old and was a wonderful mother to Mary (Rob) Rasefske of Broadalbin, NY, Beth of Salem, MA and Michael (Debbie) of Bend, OR. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Adam, Caitlin and Kelsey Rasefske, and Michael’s two children, Abigail and Alexander.

Born in Newark, NJ, Audrey spent her early years in Catskill, NY. After high school graduation, she entered the Nursing program at the old Albany Medical College and graduated with a BS in Nursing in 1953. Not wanting to “settle down” right away, she and her dear friend of over 50 years, Ruth Brislin, went to England and worked as staff nurses at the local hospital in Nottingham for about a year. Upon returning to the US, she worked at several hospitals in New York City.

In November 1962, she married Edmund (Ted) Toolan. They spent 54 happy years in Galway, NY before moving to Saratoga Springs about 5 years ago. While living in Galway, she was very active in the community and was a Charter Member of the Galway Ambulance Corps. In 1975, Audrey was awarded a Life Membership in the Galway PTA for her outstanding contributions to the youth of the community. She was an adult Girl Scout for 12 years and had been active in scouting in Galway at all levels. She was also named the outstanding volunteer in 1978 by the Mohawk Girl Scout Council, had served as chairman of the Galway Book Fair for five years and was a former PTSA president.

In later life Audrey and Ted made several trips to Ireland where both their families were from. They equally enjoyed their summer home in Phippsburg, ME for over twenty years. Several times over the years she commented that she came from New York City of 6 million people to the Town of Galway with six hundred.

A memorial service will be held later this summer at the convenience of the family.

8 John Stewart Keeley BACON HILL — John Stewart Keeley, 64, a resident of Bacon Hill, passed away unexpectedly on Monday June 13, 2016.

Born February 10, 1952 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late John “Jack” Keeley and Ruth Wendell Keeley.

John grew up on Green Street in Schuylerville and graduated from Schuylerville School. He served a brief time in the US Air Force, and worked in the AV department at BOCES. Most recently he worked at Winney’s Farm in Bacon Hill.

Survivors include his children, Sean Keeley of Glens Falls, Jay (Neva) Keeley of Piney Flats, TN, Tim (Christy) Beatty of Clyattville, GA and Mary (Brad) Wise of Evans, GA, his brother, Mike (Penny) Keeley of Lee’s Summit, MO, sister, Karen (Steve) Marsh of Glenville, and sister, Lisa (Ed) Ray of Wallback, WV, aunt, Shirley Mabb of Saratoga Springs, 13 grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves behind many dear friends he considered family.

John was a quiet man with a quick wit and sparkling blue eyes. He was a great dad, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. We will hold him in our hearts until we meet him again.

Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Margaret M. Thompson Hyland. Judy was a graduate of St. Paul the Apostle School and Catholic Central

Judy and her family have summered for generations at Hedges Lake, in Cambridge, NY, where she served as Vice President of the Hedges Lake Campers Association. She was an avid Siena Saints Basketball and RPI Engineers Hockey fan, enjoyed playing Bridge, as well as taking any chance at slot machines that she could. She was a communicant of the former St. Paul the Apostle Church in Beman Park, where she was a member of the Mothers’ Club.

Devoted mother of Patrick J. (Jean) McKeown of Latham, Jack "Jick" McKeown of Troy, Margaret Mary McKeown of Moreau and Kathleen (David) Barringer of Saratoga; cherished grandmother of Kelly and Kacie McKeown, and Reilley, Eddy and Jake Barringer. Judy was predeceased by her sister Jean (David) Kline and her brother Jack (Anne) Hyland. Aunt Jude is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

WILTON —When President Ulysses S. Grant came to Mt. McGregor in the summer of 1885, he brought his entire family. This was taken of Grant’s family in June of that year on the porch of Grant Cottage. On Father’s Day Grant Cottage will offer a free Make-YourOwn Sundae, courtesy of Stewarts Shops, to the first 200 people who visit the Cottage between 1 and 3 p.m. Although many of the examples of family entertainment have been forgotten, the treat of ice cream is timeless.

In the electronics-free 19th century people had to be more inventive in their childhood games and our volunteers will show some examples Sunday. Earn a prize guessing the use of items now stored in a period trunk, color a picture which we will display, try on Civil War replica clothing, meet Sam Willet, the soldier who entertained the children of the Grant family and walk the paths to the scenic Overlook.

Of course, the most important element of Grant Cottage is the fact that the 18th president of the USA spent the last six weeks of his life there completing his memoirs, which were then published by Mark Twain, who also visited Mt. McGregor that summer. Take a Father’s Day tour of the rooms where U.S. Grant worked and died 131 years ago and enjoy some free Stewart’s ice cream.

Jumel’s Future to be Decided Monday

by Eli King for Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Four years after conceiving the idea to build an English garden style community on Jumel Place, Witt Construction, Inc. may break ground on its seven condo development as early as July, pending a June 20 Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, which may be the last opportunity for those opposed to the plan to speak out.

“I’m anticipating a favorable vote,” said John Witt, president of Witt Construction, Inc. A 29-year industry veteran, Witt has completed over 400 projects including townhomes, condos, custom homes, and remodeling.

But there are over 500 people who oppose the plan, and Lake Avenue resident, Sam Brewton, has been the most vocal of the group.

“He doesn’t have neighborhood support,” said Brewton, noting that neighbors were, in fact, on board with the idea in its earliest stages, but that was prior to details of the redevelopment plan being made available. Brewton said that as more specifics on the development were released, some neighbors and resident supporters have been “jumping ship,” a reaction Brewton credits to false

information from the builder.

Originally approved by the zoning board in 2014, plans for “Downton Walk” (formerly called Magnolia Lane) were delayed due to the death of the former landowner and a complicated probate process. At the time, Witt received approval for an area variance to erect seven detached single-family condominiums on the 0.8. acre lot, which is zoned Urban Residential 3 and requires relief for maximum number of buildings allowed (from one to seven), building coverage, setbacks, and a variance to construct an 8’ privacy fence around part of the perimeter.

“We do not oppose Mr. Witt,” Brewton said of the opposition, “We want him to develop the space...just not this.”

Brewton and a handful of other neighbors have invested over $6,000 in legal fees fighting the plan as it is, including a proposal to reconfigure it from seven units down to five, with the same return on investment to Witt that was projected in the original 2014 version. The compromise, according to Brewton, would be more in line with zoning and the surrounding neighborhood.

Witt, however, believes the project will be mutually beneficial as is - adding housing and

enhancing the neighborhood and is confident it will pass on June 20 since no material changes were made to the original version approved two years ago.

“It’s a great urban infill project,” said Witt, “I look at this more like a piece of artwork...something the whole city will be proud of, even the neighbors who were opposed to it will be proud.”

Located about a block from East Side Recreation Park, materials for the two to four bedroom single-family condominiums include reclaimed brick, stucco, and knotty cyprus. Each unit includes a garage for 2+ cars and one designated guest spot. Other amenities include heated driveways, courtyards, and privacy fences.

Prices for the single-family condominiums will range from $700,000 to $1,500,000.

If approved, demolition of the existing structure at 27 Jumel Place - a 10,000 square foot circa 1950 structure, could begin as early as next month. After all units are sold, construction of Downton Walk would take about a year to complete.

The public is encouraged to attend Monday’s meeting in what may be the last opportunity to discuss the future of the space. Brewton also plans to speak and submit the reconfiguration proposal.

“We just want John Witt to hear the city, to hear us,” Brewton said.

Deputy Mayor Joe Ogden Heads to SUNY Search Underway for New Deputy Mayor SARATOGA SPRINGS — Deputy Mayor Joseph J. Ogden, a longtime resident of Saratoga Springs, submitted his resignation from City Hall, and his last day was Thursday, June 16. Ogden has been selected as the Director of Budget Development and Execution at the State University of New York (SUNY).

Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne D. Yepsen spoke highly of Ogden in a statement about the resignation. “He has bought a professional approach, along with his extensive policy and financial expertise, to my department which was much needed and appreciated by so many of us,” she said. “He has worked tirelessly and successfully advanced multiple issues and initiatives important to me and to our constituents. We will miss his sense of

humor and his team spirit.”

Ogden said that being deputy mayor has been a dream job for him, and thanked Yepsen for the opportunity. “It has been a privilege to work alongside her on our many accomplishments in City Hall,” he said. “A heartfelt thank you to all of my fellow citizens who have shown not just me, but my family as well, tremendous warmth and kindness over the years. And a very, very sincere thank you to all of my fellow city employees for showing me an extraordinary level of patience, respect and coordination during the last two and a half years. At a time when government service is too often looked upon unfavorably, our citizens should take unabashed pride in the fact that our city employees are passionate about

their community, passionate about helping others, and give 100 percent day-in and day-out. It has been my great privilege to work in their ranks, and I am forever grateful.”

Good staff is the backbone of any part-time government, such as the City of Saratoga Springs, and Ogden noted that many give up more lucrative opportunities in the private sector to commit to public service.

“It’s inspiring, working with them,” he said. “Our planning staff is – hands down – the best planning staff in the Capital Region. They are doing a fantastic job.”

Ogden said one of the things he will miss is working on the unified development ordinance the City is doing with a grant from NYSERDA. “We’re completely reevaluating our

“I think the City has a very natural feel to it, just this wonderful confluence of history and culture and activities that you just don’t see in a lot of cities and towns these days,” he said.

“There’s always something happening, and it’s a tremendously charitable community, a really special place to live and work.”

While Ogden is making that long commute to his new job every day, the Mayor’s Office is accepting applications

for the Deputy Mayor position.

She said change is a good time to re-evaluate.

“First, let me publicly thank Joe and his dedicated service to me and the City,” said Yepsen. “I am very happy for him in his next move and look forward to recruiting him as a volunteer some day! We are focused on establishing priorities and credentials for this position and I am accepting resumes. Finance and policy experience are key, as well as being versed with City issues. People and love of public service are very important as well. This person is an extension of me and our agenda and initiatives, so obviously the chemistry is a deciding factor, as well as how well they can represent me and the City in meetings, at events, and while conducting all City business. The Deputy is also the day-to-day manager of several departments so management and personnel experience is also important.”

Hendrickson has likened this to missing mortgage payments, as the VLT monies were part of a contract to NYRA in exchange for turning the titles of a billion dollars worth of its lands over to the state.

“You can’t back out of paying your mortgage to a bank,” Hendrickson said. “This is the same thing. There’s no question this money is due to NYRA. There shouldn’t be any cap until the money is paid. You’re basically saying, if we don’t have this money, we’ll have to balance the budget on the backs of our fans.”

“Secondly,” continued Shimkus regarding Cuomo’s proposal, “it has a number of performance standards that the new NYRA board would have to meet – largely related to financial practices and financial operations – and if they don’t meet those standards, than the Franchise Oversight Board can withhold funds or step in to control operations going forward.”

Given NYRA’s history that led to the state takeover, the governor’s proposal is not surprising, but Shimkus said the advocates find the controls excessive, and not taking into account the progress NYRA has made over the last four years.

“There is a new management team in place,” he said. “They have had to be very transparent and adopted a wide range of new practices that we think are working.

And, based on their performance over the last two years, they’ve

accomplished what the governor set out to accomplish when he took over racing four years ago. The promise that he made at the time – a promise that was included in the law – was, provided those things happened, NYS would get out of running horse racing.”

Several advocates agree, including Concerned Citizens for Racing Chair Maureen Lewi, Shimkus, and Hendrickson, that the NYS government is not known for being agile, flexible and forward-thinking, which a new NYRA board will need to be successful in the increasingly competitive racing industry. Now that the state will have casinos, the competition is even tougher than before.

“There is not another track in the country that is run by the state government,” said Shimkus.

“Not one.”

According to Shimkus, the passing of the bipartisan bill sends a positive message to the racing industry that NYS is committed to a regional and responsible way of running a year round, successful thoroughbred racing operation. Now everyone is waiting to see what the governor will do.

Exercise rider Heather Coots, one of the many backstretch workers who are also impacted by the re-privatization struggles, said at the press conference, “I can’t believe we’re having this discussion, it’s madness. Governor Cuomo, you need to man up and keep your promise.”

by Megin Potter Saratoga TODAY We only see a fraction of the story when we see the appliances we use at home every day. We see what they allow us to do, but they have a much bigger story to tell.

Part of that story is about how,

as a community, our priorities and household preferences have evolved. As we’ve changed, it’s been the people at Earl B. Feiden, Inc. that have been there for 90 years providing us with the appliances we want to make history happen.

In the Beginning The Feiden family was in the ice and coal business, chopping ice from the family ponds on Watervliet-Shaker Road and delivering it to customer’s homes, when Earl Feiden responded to customer demand and formed an appliance store in his garage in 1926. For many, it was a time of transition in the home. In addition to the ability to preserve food with iceboxes, people were also enjoying the novelty of listening to the radio. helped with the labor intensive chore of washing; while toasters, percolators and Revere Ware made cooking easier.

When the stock market crashed in 1929 and growth slowed, Feiden was still able to provide for the household necessities of cooking and food preservation. By the mid 1930’s customers were replacing their iceboxes with refrigerators and freezers. As most people in the region also now had electricity at home, convenience appliance items continued to grow in popularity.

A Time of Change World War II led to a huge shift for everyone. Labor and materials were used to support the war effort and appliance production slowed tremendously.

“My Dad remembers coming home on furlough from the Army and his Dad would have appliance repair appointments waiting for him,” said Mary Feiden. People were repairing and making do with what they had. It was a time of rationing followed by a post-war industrialization kick-start to the economy and a large increase in both supply and demand.

Once the war was over, factories were running and the appliance business soon outgrew the family garage. The new Earl B. Feiden showroom opened on Route 9 at the circle in 1946.

Appliances became more modern; electric refrigerators, clothes dryers, phonographs, electric stoves, garbage disposals, etc. were all popular, sought after items. The revolutionary invention of the television was still somewhat of a

luxury at this time, however.

“My grandfather would often invite local children to the showroom to watch TV since many families did not yet own one,” said Mary.

Exploration and Transportation As the highway system expanded across the country, manufacturing distribution grew. Blossoming as well was the changing role of women. By the 1960s, many more women were working outside of the home and pursuing careers, so they were spending less time cooking and cleaning. At Feiden’s, men and women were often coming in together and buying products that reflected this shift in priorities, such as dishwashers and self-cleaning ovens. This time period was the beginning of the sexes sharing household responsibilities, a trend that is continuing today.

New technology also began stretching the public’s

imagination. This was most evident with the advent of the microwave oven.

“Many people were skeptical of the products since the idea of heating food with no heat was a completely new concept,” said Mary.

Feiden’s understood their skepticism, and responded by offering cooking demonstrations and even in-home classes for customers to learn this new, exciting way of cooking. In 1980 about 20% of US households had microwave ovens. With the addition of over-the-range microwaves, this numbers has continued to grow to more than 90% of American households having one today.

Growth into the Future The excess income of the 1980s-90s allowed people to build “McMansions” and install large built-in refrigerators, professional ranges (usually gas), projection and large screen TV’s, VCR’s, entertainment centers,

Although they are known for always having the latest innovative, specialty products (as this market continues to increase), they have never lost sight of the need to offer an excellent selection of appliances for every budget. Congratulations, ECHS Graduates!

MALTA — More than 50 students from high schools across the region graduate from the Clean Technologies and Sustainable Industries Early College High School (ECHS), located at Hudson Valley Community College’s TEC-SMART extension center in NYSERDA’s Saratoga Technology and Energy Park® (STEP®) in Malta on Wednesday, June 8.

Over 300 guests viewed displays of students’ capstone projects, offering innovative solutions to real world problems.

For her capstone project, Tatum Wilkson, a graduating senior at Schuylerville High School, developed a “gREenhoUSE” wine bottle that comes with seedlings. It will be sold in a unique, sustainable packaging.

The actual bottle can be converted to an early home for the seedling.

These plants can range between anything like tomato plants to saplings. Also, the wine-drinker can take the sprout/bottle-combo and bury it in soil, either outside or in a planter, and the bottle will biodegrade around the plant, providing vital nutrients to the soil that will facilitate future growth.

Wilkson’s innovation won her the “Most Socially Beneficial Award.”

“We had to come up with a product that had to involve some nanotechnology and have a business plan, too,” said Wilkson. “I want to have my own business at some point, a company called gREenhoUSE and all my work will be like my capstone, able to convert to more sustainable options.

In particular, I like architecture, so I am going to Clarkson for a BA in environmental engineering and a masters in business.”

Astria Solutions Group Vice Presidents Greg Laird and Jeffrey Frankel presented their second annual STEM Scholarships to Clean Tech ECHS seniors Simon Will and Thomas Marron. The scholarship was split this year between the two students, each will receive $250 a semester for up to 8 semesters while they pursue college coursework and a career in a STEM field.

Meet the Valedictorians

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Fortytwo students graduated from Saratoga Central Catholic School on Friday, June 10 at St. Clement's Church on Lake Avenue. Spa Catholic Principal L. Stephen Lombard expressed great pride in all 42 graduates.

“It’s a group of students who has really bought into the mission of Saratoga Central Catholic, especially when it comes to service,” Lombard said. “Many of them have taken on service project, raising money and levels of consciousness for various issues.

They are going to be extremely successful because they are not at all selfish, and are very attuned to doing the right things.”

This year’s valedictorians, Bridget Casey Naughton, Chloe Stasia Ethier, and Amelia Katherine Bielefeld, are an example of the bright, committed students of the graduating class of 2016.

Naughton, daughter of Kate and Michael Naughton, is a native of Saratoga Springs. She is the vice president of the National Honor Society and a member of the community service club.

As a member of Peer Ministry, she acts as a role model to other students. She was a member of Envirothon and Community Service Club for two years. She was elected president of her class twice, working with her advisors to set up community service projects and class fundraisers to pay for their senior activities. She was a varsity basketball cheerleader for all four years of her high school career, being a captain for three of the years.

the varsity volleyball program for two years, where she was a captain her senior year. For all four high school years, she also competed in the regional Odyssey of the Mind competitions and went on to states her sophomore year. Naughton will be attending Boston College in the fall and plans on majoring in secondary education and mathematics.

Ethier, daughter of Steve and Kathy Ethier is a High Honors student as well as a Scholar Athlete with 16 Varsity pins. During her time at Saratoga Central Catholic, Chloe has been a member of the Varsity Golf team, Varsity Volleyball team, Varsity Basketball team and Varsity Track and Field Team. She is a National Honor Society member and also participates in Peer Ministry.

Ethier will be attending Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the fall to major in Business.

Amelia Bielefeld is the daughter of James R. Bielefeld Jr. and Heidi Worthman. She is Vice President of her senior class and has been involved in student government throughout high school. She is treasurer of the National Honor Society and a Peer Minister at Saratoga Central Catholic. Bielefeld ran cross-country all four years of high school and played softball for three before joining the track team. She was also involved in Odyssey of the Mind, Envirothon, and Community Service Club.

Bielefeld will attend St. Josephs University in Philadelphia in the Honors Program to pursue a degree in Biology on the premedical track.

Bielefeld was also selected into the McNulty Program at St. Joseph's which is a scholarship program mentoring young women studying science and math.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Enrichment Resource Center at the Washington-SaratogaWarren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES hosted the 38th Annual Regional Spelling Bee for top spellers from grades 4 through 8 in BOCES component districts at the Skidmore College Filene Recital Hall on Wednesday, June 8.

The winning speller was Patrick Ward, an eighth grade student from Ft. Ann High School, and in second place was Freddy Weidner from Lake George Junior-Senior High School.

Springs, the Bee awarded ribbons for the top six spellers and a plaque to the winner's school with the student’s name inscribed.

This year’s winner received passes to the Great Escape, and the second place winner received tickets to a classical performance at SPAC, and the third through sixth place spellers received prizes compliments of Northshire Bookstore.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Maple Avenue Middle School held a Socratic Forum Showcase Night on Wednesday, June 15. It was a time to display all of the activities, projects, and skills that students

have built upon throughout the year. Parents, guardians, and family members will have a chance to ask questions and get details from their child on the learning and growth that occurred with each project.

Schuylerville Senior Receives Music Award SCHUYLERVILLE — A senior from Schuylerville High School has received a music award in honor of her outstanding choir performance. Claire Prunier, the salutatorian for the Class of 2016 at Schuylerville High School recently received a $500 Music Award from the New York State School Facilities Association.

Peter Riggi, SFA treasurer and superintendent of buildings and grounds for the Schuylerville Center School District presented her with the award, along with

the school’s choral director Jodi Leight. The award will also be presented at graduation.

Learning to make cheese is a relatively simple process.

Perfecting the art of cheese making might take a lifetime. Even after working with cheese for more than 10 years, Sean O’Conner says he continues to learn new things.

O’Conner owns R&G Cheese Makers, one of the newest vendors at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. He started the business

in Cohoes seven years ago but moved recently to Troy where he was born. The business, named after his sons Ryan and Gavin, produces cheese from locally sourced cow and goat milk provided by Willow Marsh Farm and other farms in Saratoga County.

O’Conner worked with a few different creameries for a few years before starting his own

business. He felt that having his own business would give him the chance to apply the skills he learned and to be creative.

Today, the company makes a variety of cheeses as well as yogurt. Each cheese starts more or less the same way, with milk.

From there, however, each one goes through a different process in order to achieve its particular taste, O’Conner said. For example: - A fresh mozzarella will take a full day's worth of work, but will be ready to eat right away.

- A fresh chevre will take a few hours of work over the span of four days before it is ready.

- A good goats’ milk blue cheese will only take a half a day of work but will then need to be carefully maintained over two to three months before it reaches the perfect flavor.

- A stronger flavored cheese, such as a cheddar, will be aged anywhere from 6 months to a few years.

In addition to the classic cheeses, O’Conner makes varieties that include such items as layers of truffles, fennel pollen, and peppercorns. A couple of favorites include a fresh maple chipotle chevre along with an aged ramp cheese, made from the early spring seasonal ramps.

R&G cheeses are sold at local co-ops and specialty markets in addition to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. In addition, several area restaurants feature O’Conner’s cheeses in their preparations.

Visit R&G Cheeses at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, which takes place twice a week May through October at High Rock Park. The market operates from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, with more than 60 local vendors.

Preparation of Dressing: Blend all dressing ingredients together in an immersion or tabletop blender while adding olive oil through cover while running.

Dressing: - 1 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil* - ¼ cup White Balsamic Vinegar - ½ teaspoon Honey Mustard* - 1 tablespoon Honey* - 1 tablespoon Fig Spread - Pepper Salad: - 4 oz Mixed Greens* - 1 Round R&G Cheesemakers’ Eclipse Goat Cheese* - Pistachio Nuts, Shelled and Roasted - 6 Fresh Figs - Chives* - Fresh Molasses

Eclipse Cheese

Place cleaned salad greens in a large bowl.

With a large spoon, run vinaigrette around inside of bowl. Gently toss greens into the center of the bowl. Do not over dress.

To Assemble and Plate: Place serving of mixed greens on a plate. Cut and place a wedge of goat cheese on top of greens.

Slice figs ½ inch thick and stack 2 off set on plate.

Scatter roasted pistachio nuts. Drizzle honey and finely chopped chives on top of greens. Drizzle plate with fig molasses.

“Big Boy Driving the Boat”

by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAY Hello my Foodie Friends. As I reflect on this coming weekend being Father’s day, I recognize my blessing of two incredible children and that I love being a father. I also find that I miss my own father who passed six years ago. There are so many precious memories I have of my own childhood and of my children. Among my very special memories are our summer experiences on the coast of Rhode Island. Prior to moving to Upstate New York, we lived on the coast of Connecticut. Our good neighbors and friends, Ron and Deede, owned a fifty foot “boat” named “The Graduate” that they docked in West Greenwich Rhode Island in Narragansett Bay. Weekend excursions included boating to Newport Rhode Island or just hanging out on the boat. Ron is a master captain in boating and comes from a military background in the Navy. He is also a master chef!! He was always very proud driving “The Graduate”and serving his crew incredible seafood dishes.

Ahh…what fabulous memories of our rides. Our children were very young at the time of most of our adventures. There was one very special time when Ron allowed our three-year-son Johnny, to take the helm and to sit in Ron’s chair to drive the boat. Johnny sat proudly with a very determined look in Ron’s captain’s chair, holding firmly onto the boat's steering wheel and exclaimed “big boy driving the boat!” It was precious. Each summer that we were able to join Ron and Deede on “The Graduate”, Ron would allow Johnny to take the helm and be the “big boy driving the boat”. These are among the special memories of being on the water, with amazing friends, breathing in the sea air and feeling it on your skin. With

boating brought the feasting on spectacular seafood meals made

by Ron and Deede.

This is one of our favorite recipes from our fun seaside adventures: INGREDIENTS: MUSSEL BROTH 1/2 pound mussels, scrubbed and debearded 1 shallot, thinly sliced 4 tarragon sprigs 2 cups dry white wine 1/4 cup Pernod CARAMELIZED FENNEL AND LEEKS 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 fennel bulbs, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch dice 2 leeks, light green and white parts only, sliced 1/2 inch thick MUSSELS 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 shallots, thinly sliced 5 pounds mussels, scrubbed and debearded 1/4 cup Pernod 3/4 cup crème fraîche Kosher salt Small tarragon leaves, for garnish Toasted or grilled baguettes, for serving Mussels with Caramelized Fennel and Leaks This is a simple mussel broth with caramelized vegetables and crème fraiche that pump up the flavor of the steamed mussels.

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE MAKE THE MUSSEL BROTH Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan. Cover, bring to a simmer and cook until the mussels open, about 3 minutes.

Strain the broth and reserve the mussels.

MAKE THE CARAMELIZED FENNEL AND LEEKS In a large skillet, melt the butter. Add the fennel and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until tender and golden, about 15 minutes. Add the leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and the fennel is lightly caramelized, about 8 minutes more.

Remove from the heat.

PREPARE THE MUSSELS In a pot, melt the butter. Add the shallots and cook over moderate heat until softened, 2 minutes.

Add the mussels and Pernod and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the mussel broth and the fennel mixture. Cover and cook until the mussels open, about 5 minutes;

using a slotted spoon, transfer the mussels to a large bowl as they open.

PREPARE THE MUSSELS Bring the broth to a simmer.

Whisk in the crème fraîche and season with salt. Add all of the mussels and cook until hot.

Transfer the mussels and broth to bowls; garnish with tarragon.

Serve with toasted baguettes.

The caramelized fennel mixture can be refrigerated for 2 days.

A great item to have when serving this dish is a lemon stretchy that is a lemon wedge

straining cover. This fine mesh cotton tool helps to keep seeds out of your food. You simply cut the lemon, stretch the elastic open and place the wrap over the cut end.

I can’t help but smile at the priceless memories we all had with Ron and Deede on “The Graduate” with our big boy “driving the boat” and our daughter giggling at the sea spray blown up from the sides of the boat. 10th Annual Firecracker 4 Road Race Saratoga’s popular four-mile Firecracker 4 road race on July 4th has added a military formation run (open to the public) and half-mile kids run this year. Civic Opportunity for Volunteering The Care Links Program has been around since 1996 when it was established to help senior citizens who need support with non-medical services that help them stay in their homes as long as possible. Trained volunteers are the core of Care Links because they provide no-cost supportive services including transportation, respite, shopping and errands, handyman services, friendly visiting, telephone reassurance and Alzheimer’s support groups.

By serving the communities of Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Malta, Ballston, Charlton, and the city of Mechanicville the program supplements the work of the County Office of the Aging and the town vans. There is always a need to have more volunteers. A SPAC-tacular History!

First of a Series Celebrating SPAC50

by Arthur Gonick Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — It was a completely different time.

The early 1960s - prior to the summer of love, prior to the turmoil the country would experience due to the Vietnam War. It was a time that saw the construction of great public sector projects – sometimes in conjunction with the private sector, but clearly led by our elected officials. In 1960s New York State, the Governor was Nelson Rockefeller. A Republican – surprising, perhaps in that these were nothing like today’s Republicans – or today’s Democrats for that matter.

Rockefeller, and the leaders of his day, used great public projects as the cornerstone of their economic programs. Whether you agree with his agenda or not in retrospect, Gov. Rockefeller’s economic model for upstate involved giving nearly town a public sector anchor – usually a branch of SUNY or, in some cases, a prison.

But for Saratoga, he had something else in mind – a jewel. An artistic wonder that was to become what we fondly call SPAC. Perhaps his wife –Margaretta – known popularly as “Happy” spurred this on. “Happy” would later serve as Chair of the Board for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in 1971, and was named Honorary Chair of

SPAC’s 50th Anniversary, before her passing on May 19, 2015. But regardless, this wasn’t going to be an easy case of Nelson spending money just to please his wife. Ask someone who was there. “‘Rocky’ wasn’t going to move on this without seeing evidence of a strong civic commitment from the local community,” said William P. “Bill” Dake. The Dake family, as well as others with names like Lewis Swyer, Richard Leach and Marylou Whitney, among others, provided the cornerstone local foundations for the performing arts mecca to come– and one which has stood the test of time – as evidenced in 2015 being named the Best Outdoor Music Venue in the United States by a USA Today Reader’s Poll.

Brick and mortar and steel are one thing, but the civic commitment that made SPAC what it is goes way beyond that. “From a programming standpoint.” Bill Dake recalled, “we recognized that we were coming into an age where live entertainment was being severely challenged by new forms of electronic entertainment.”

In the 1960s, this would be primarily television, yet this is even truer today –with live performance being challenged by a myriad of digital entertainment delivery options.

“Our response was to offer ‘the best of breed’ in every category,” Bill Dake said. “This not only included a spectacular setting, but also world

class resident companies – New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra – and also the best of everything in opera, theatre and every other performance genre.”

That commitment to excellence later extended further – to Jazz, Rock, and even multi-media performances.

Whatever the state-of-the-art was at the time, SPAC embraced it. Because of that philosophical cornerstone, SPAC not only survived – it thrived.

“What SPAC offered then, and continues to today,” Bill Dake concluded, “is more than a lovely setting, more than a performance – it’s a superior experience.”

Some things don’t change – even after 50 years. When you attend SPAC this summer, take a moment to celebrate that the cornerstones, laid over five decades ago, are as strong as ever.

It is my pleasure, indeed my honor to be coordinating Saratoga TODAY’s coverage of SPAC50.

In this series, which we anticipate will spread over seven issues, each over numerous pages between now and our Labor Day issue on September 2, we intend to offer you multiple viewpoints, multiple memories, and multiple features – some of which we are still gathering commitments on at this time. However, I assure you that, even if we were to go with just what we have “in-house” at this point, thanks to the help of many people, including from SPAC itself, we intend to do the following: - Dazzle and delight you - Help you to remember, and make you smile - Most of all, I know what we present will surprise you, because we are going to show you some

things that no one else has – such as archival photos from our great photographers, exclusive remembrances – both yours and mine, and other special features as well.

For instance, look for our “Man on the Street” team’s table at select early SPAC performances this season. We’ll be asking only one question: “What is your favorite SPAC memory?” And we can’t wait to share your answers with everyone.

All of this, tied up with a bow, will be designed to say one basic thing: Bravo SPAC, for providing a canvas for 50 years – a canvas wide enough and tall enough, vibrant and colorful enough, inclusive and diverse enough… … For everyone to paint lifetime memories.

New NMD Exhibit puts it all in Perspective

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Thursday, June 9, The National Museum of Dance (NMD) opened its newest exhibition, 50 Years at SPAC. As a celebration of its 50th Anniversary season, the exhibit highlights the extraordinary programming at the Performing Arts Center over the past five decades.

SPAC has welcomed a vast range of world-renowned

performing artists including resident companies New York City Ballet and The Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as other prominent dance groups. These and annual festivals such as the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival, the Freihofer Jazz Festival, and the tremendous roster of popular music concerts that began in the late 1960s are also showcased.

Through costumes, photographs, video and interviews with eminent artists who have performed at SPAC, the exhibit explores the rich

history and collective vision that built one of the finest and most celebrated venues in the world.

The exhibit will run for a year, and it is highly recommended that you make plans to take the family early to a 2016 SPAC show, and stop here first. To reminisce and to learn there is no better place to start your evening.

The Ultimate Place to “Show Face!”

Gaffney’s 34th Annual Garden Party on Sunday

by Arthur Gonick Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Plain and simple: If I were going to pick one event to show a newcomer what downtown Saratoga Springs entertainment is all about, it would be Gaffney’s Garden Party. A Father’s Day tradition, its 34th renewal will be this Sunday, June 19, beginning at 1 p.m.

For one thing, that newcomer would have a chance to meet a good cross-section of our citizenry, who all will be there. That includes a tremendous percentage of the hospitality industry from other places in town, who watch the clock until they can get off-shift, and join their erstwhile customers, and probably the owners of the businesses they work for as well – who are already there, in the Garden.

And that’s the thing. No one spends an extra dime counter-programming against Gaffney’s on this day. It would be a futile waste of time and cash. That’s what a tradition is, and the people reinforce it each year on Father’s day. Gaffney’s great people may be too humble and grateful to say it – so I will. Yes, other places are open – but this is Gaffney’s day.

Feel free to take issue with me if you like. You’ll know where to find me on Sunday afternoon.

They get the staff revved up, which gets us all going. Each year, we are motivated to make it the best one ever. Whether (Sunday) will be your first Garden Party, or your 34th, our goal is to make it the best one ever for you.”

This year is no exception: The formula for a successful Gaffney’s experience has always been a combination of faithfulness to what traditionally works, while reaching out and incorporating new, up and coming stars into its “family.” The party starts at 1 p.m., with all the drink and food specials you would expect.

Then, at 2 p.m. traditional favorite Rich Ortiz will be back. He tees up the day with a mellow vibe – not that people won’t be feeling it and dancing, but Rich – a consummate pro, knows when to bring things to a boil, and when to let it simmer. He will provide the quintessential soundtrack for a Sunday summer afternoon.

Then at 5 p.m. – surf’s up with Big Fez and the Surfmatics, and don’t be surprised if all hell breaks loose!

Google their pic, and you’ll get the idea. About 6 p.m., people will start thinking of excuses to call in late to work the next day. But chances are, you can surf right over to your boss on the other side of the garden and let him/her know. It’s that kind of day.

Case in point: Chef Kevin Myers, whose cuisine is a major reason why Gaffney’s is their “go-to” place, chooses to spotlight entertainment “… for me, it’s the great talent that has played here over the past 34 years.” And former server Jen Poitras, who noted, “My customers always called the Garden Party ‘Fun Family Date Day.’” Well, fast forward some years, and now Jen Poitras is known as Jen Poitras Myers. NYRA: How they Must Navigate the Winds of Change

by Tom Amello for Saratoga TODAY The 2016 Saratoga Race Course meeting will soon be upon us.

Change is in the wind for the New York Racing Association. On April 14, the NYRA Board approved its re-privatization plan. The vote represents the culmination of a process initiated in 2012 when Governor Cuomo assumed control of racing in the state. Public perception of the influence of drugs in racing, coupled with a rash of horse fatalities precipitated and bolstered Governor Cuomo’s takeover decision.

However, as reported in the New York Times, the Governor opted to extract more from NYRA: “Governor Cuomo at a news conference to announce the state’s action said that it was urgent to address an imperiled horse-racing industry that has become increasingly reliant on the income drawn from a relatively recent arrival at the racetrack: casinos with hundreds of video slot machines.”

Here’s what I think: Over protests from many involved directly with racing in New York, the Governor essentially set aside the State’s franchise agreement with NYRA. In an exchange for property at its three racetracks, NYRA negotiated a 25-year franchise agreement that included a VLT revenue stream.

Governor Cuomo dislikes the quasigovernment nature of NYRA. He wanted the State out of horse racing and VLT revenue out of racing’s bottom line. He mandated a three-year oversight period with a re-privatization plan to be delivered in 2015. It took an extra year, but Mr. Cuomo got exactly what he wanted. And so far it has cost him two well-respected and principled gentlemen advisors in Charles Wait and now John Hendrickson.

Following a national search

for an executive, NYRA hired Chris Kay to serve as NYRA President and CEO. When questioned about his top priorities, Mr. Kay referred to the three-year strategic plan developed by the NYRA Board as his road map.

Mr. Kay said, “… number one is going to be to enhance the guest experience and to recruit others to become new fans. The second is the re-privatization; to work with the kind of people we have at the table and with state government, and the third is to improve the quality of racing and purses at every track we operate.”

The goal of re-privatization, while not Mr. Kay’s first stated goal, was certainly the goal for a re-organization Board seated by this Governor.

Ample evidence exists that Mr. Kay and NYRA also accomplished the goal of improving the quality of racing and horse safety.

However, Mr. Kay stated priority number one was a two-part goal to enhance the guest experience and recruit new racing fans. Here’s where things stand: For the first part, in 2013 NYRA adopted a “hospitality/ entertainment” model of customer service; racing fans at NYRA tracks are treated as guests. Achieving that goal would be tricky, given the nature of the downstate venues, versus that of the City of Saratoga Springs and Saratoga Race Course.

Much of the enhanced experience at all three has been via technology upgrades. For example, NYRA made capital improvements at Saratoga Race Course of over $2 million. Upgrades include additional HD televisions, improved Wi-Fi and sound, subscribing to Trakus technology for viewing and analyzing races, and additional HD video boards.

Season passes to Saratoga proved a success.

The season pass program has been further enhanced for 2016 with a “Saratoga Perks” program offering discounts from participating merchants. Changes to policy giving guests the opportunity to reserve seats at the new sports bar, picnic tables and even capping Travers attendance were all part of the strategy to enhance the experience.

Additionally, NYRA adopted the industry model of celebrating “Big Race Days” and expanding traditional big race events into a series of week-long happenings that include entertainers, food truck extravaganzas and other amusement park type events. The number of high and low roller handicapping

contests increased; efforts to make Belmont and Saratoga increasingly family-friendly also proved successful with a Taste of New York initiative, the expanded children’s play area, and the “Horse Sense” exhibit near the Taste of NY Tent by Saratoga’s grandstand entrance.

The second part of goal one, recruiting new racing fans, continues to be most challenging. And the probability of losing its VLT revenue stream geometrically increases the need. New fan education and player development are intertwined concepts critical to growing the game in New York. New fans need to understand and learn how to play and win; current players want and need to improve their skills. I believe NYRA must make a commitment beyond words to re-invent the fan education model and set a new standard for the industry.

Like most tracks, NYRA’s website has a rudimentary glossary of racing-related terms and descriptions of the process of making a wager.

Neither will ever help a new fan better understand the game. However, NYRA has, supported, to some degree, new fan recruitment initiatives developed by the Jockey Club.

These initiatives included increased television exposure. The Jockey Club committed considerable resources to its America’s Best Racing (ABR) effort. ABR targets the 18-35 age demographic, and maintains a strong web presence - supported by a cadre of Brand Ambassadors appearing at racing venues throughout the country. These Ambassadors work diligently to popularize the game through social media and “live” ontrack and off-track events. Since its launch, NYRA supported ABR initially through a Racing 101 initiative hosting “Fan Hubs” at Belmont and Saratoga in 2014. NYRA continues to provide space and access to the paddock to ABR hosts and attendees.

Dan Tordjman is a veteran Brand Ambassador. He spends hours each week researching and identifying people of influence with broad bases of friends and large followings.

ABR invites them to participate in Thoroughbred racing related events and share their experiences. Dan said, “Most of us came to the track because of our fathers or uncles. The current generation lacks that connection. We at ABR bridge that gap.”

Brand Ambassadors introduce, inform and educate as best they can.

“What is most satisfying,” Dan said,

“is seeing the lights go on when a new fan starts to understand how to play the game.” ABR events, however, take place during the racing day, and the track itself is not the best setting for learning. In fact, trying to teach new fans about handicapping during a big-race day at the track is like trying to change a tire on a moving bus.

So far, so good – but I say it is just a start.

ABR is important but cannot serve the new fan well enough, and NYRA currently does not offer any stand-alone fan education programs. In days past at Saratoga, for example, NYRA offered seminars every morning during the meet. The focus, however, was on the day’s race card and the presenters 1-2-3 picks.

Like the annual Open House, that too has gone the way of the dinosaur.

Re-instituting those morning sessions with a focus on instruction over selection would inform new fans and further enhance the guest experience.

Furthermore, NYRA, as the industry leader it purports to be, needs to develop a new model for fan development. Call it a college, institute or on-going series of seminars, but it must be a multi-media teaching-for-learning model with incentives for new fans to play the game.

Teaching-for-learning requires comprehensible materials beyond a mere glossary of terms and process to make wagers. Such a program requires a presentation setting where actual “how to do it” concepts are presented, opportunities for guided practice exist, and participants have opportunities for questions and clarification, practice (homework) and

feedback.

Teaching-for-learning also requires a team of knowledgeable instructor/mentors capable of teaching the game and remaining a resource to new fans.

Programs should be offered on dark days or as 45-60 minute sessions before and after the race day. A distance-learning curriculum, like via our local MASIE Center, taught by mentor/teachers who stay involved with the new learner, is essential.

Incentivizing new players is the easy part. Admission, season passes with perks, awarding boxes, betting and food vouchers, winners circle pictures, etc. are possible incentives.

Other venues are making an effort. Canterbury Park, for example, currently offers its guests a “Summer School” experience. For a modest fee (including admission), guests receive some food and beverage, but more importantly past performances, a workbook, a $2 betting voucher and an admission pass for future use.

Sessions run in the evenings.

Keeneland has “Betologists” assisting new fans; Monmouth Park provides “Ask Me How to Bet” booths for its guests who are new to the game.

Accomplishing their stated priority one is critical to NYRA’s future. The potential/probable loss of the VLT revenue stream mandates that NYRA dedicate significant resources and talent to design and implement new fan education and player development programs that are meaningful, measureable and effective.

The Love of Pickup Games

by Damian Fantauzzi for Saratoga TODAY There are studies that have shown organized sports inhibit kids’ creativity, but pickup games actually enhance it. Besides, at the heart of it, sports are about stories. If we, the parents, are not in the stands during practice, the kids have their playby-play stories of who did what and how they might have done a better job. They get to tell us what went well and what didn’t, instead of us telling them from the driver's seat on the car ride home. As a coach I used to hear from my players about the trip home after a game.

Think about it. Today’s world of youth sports, compared to other aspects of our children’s lives, are freakishly and characteristically parent-centered. We parents don’t

gather in the back of math class and watch our children and their classmates solve equations. In music, dance and theater, we don’t attend every single practice, lesson and rehearsal. Instead, we attend a performance, keeping our mouths shut and applaud like crazy when it’s over. So here’s an idea, especially for the multitude of stressed-out, time governed, somewhat middle-aged moms and dads out there. Let’s banish parents from youth fields, courts, gyms and diamonds, and arrange for moms and dads to play soccer, softball, basketball, and whatever else when their children have a practice.

Our kids would get more freedom, we parents would get more exercise, and all of us would remember why we love sports. Of course, that’s in a perfect world!

When I was a kid, there were just a few organized sports programs, but there's a difference compared to today's world. All of the sports that we played were seasonal – football was only in the fall, basketball was just a winter sport and spring was baseball driven.

Compared to now when we have baseball in the spring and summer, but now “fall ball” has become part of the schedule. Soccer, basketball, hockey, track and individual sports like tennis, seem to have developed a 365-day calendar. I mentioned hockey because, as a young boy,

hockey was just a game we played for fun and there was no such thing as organized hockey. After all, it was a Canadian game from the north.

We did have Little League Baseball, but in upstate New York, we'd go to the park on Saturdays to play tackle football, without equipment and nobody got hurt, Pop Warner Football wasn’t even in the conversation. Just like hockey, soccer had no home in organized sports. We never even considered playing soccer as a pickup game, that was unheard of, and it was a game played in Europe and rather "foreign" to us.

In my day, our parents were rarely in the equation when it came to the sports we played. The parents of my time rarely interfered with the coach and/or classroom teachers. Granted there were some occasions when a parent spoke to a coach or teacher concerning their child for some clarification. When it came to PT (playing time), if anything was said, it certainly wasn't overt. I know my dad never said anything to my coaches, due to the fact he worked 10 to 12 hours a day in our family restaurant, sometimes seven days a week.

The title of this article is something I addressed a couple of years ago: pickup games. Pickup games weren't always creative, especially if you had a lot of kids, but when there wasn't a big number to play, that's

when the creative bug bit us all. For example, if we had only 8 players in baseball, we would play 4 on 4, and make up some rules to fit the situation. Don't get me wrong; there are many parents who go to their children's athletic events who are there in support. Admirable and heartfelt, hopefully there is little to no critique after the game, just encouragement.

The best question that a parent could ask their child is: "Was it fun?"

So, do kids get together with their best friends to play pickup?

Can't say it's an option anymore because of the time commitment for schoolwork and practice. There isn't enough time in their schedule for playing sports with their friends in the good, old, healthy environment of pickup games. I'll drive by the Eastside, or Westside where there use to be 20 to 30 kids making teams to play basketball, and now I see empty courts. Pickup games are a lot of fun, and most of all, a learning experience that kids need.

I never saw parents at those pickup games; it was always just the kids. No refs, few fans or observers other than those waiting their turn who stood at the edge. It was the arena of learning to get along, cooperative play and resolving issues.

Pickup play vs. organized team and league play is about giving kids more freedom and creativity without the abandonment

of league play entirely. The reason pickup games can enhance creativity isn't simply because parents are absent, it's because the kids themselves have to work out all the details like: who's playing, where are you playing, where are you getting the equipment (bring your basketball, baseball bat, etc.), picking teams, settling disputes-a big part of backyard games. League play concentrates on the team oriented aspects of sports, and truthfully they aren't as important, since most kids aren't going on to become college stars or professional athletes.

So my point is that kids need more time to play sports with their friends and that's without the influence and control of their parents. Pickup play is so essential to developing a passion and love for any sport, but more importantly, it becomes more fun than having sports overly organized. In my observations as a coach, I have seen the worth and socialization of kids through interaction between peer groups. The players who love their sport will flock to the playgrounds to just play, and play when there is no adult interference because it's fun. The fun to be picked by your friends to be on their team, or wait your turn to play the winner! In the love for pickup games everyone has a chance for stardom, at least in their own mind!

All Outdoors The Bass Times Are Yet To Come

by Tim Blodgett Saratoga TODAY Predictability, order, linear progression and the achievement of goals are mutually exclusive concepts. We live our lives in a chaotic stew of outside influence that foils our attempts to realize those lofty concepts so take comfort in small victories when you can. It takes a lot of energy to create the fleeting moments of order we crave, and then the tiniest nudge brings them crashing down. Unpredictability is the only predictability we can bank on.

Obstructions in our paths turn us from the course we choose, and even simple goals often seem beyond our grasp. To find order amidst the chaos of our lives, we must look beyond ourselves and take heart in the simple, natural rhythms of our world. Pessimists say the only sure things are death and taxes. I prefer to look on the bright side. The sun will rise in the East every day. Winter’s dreary will be subdued by spring’s greening, followed by summer’s sunshine. Finally, fall blazes with color before it fades, bringing us back to the first snowfall of winter. Tides rise and fall, the grass grows and needs to be mowed and there will always be dandelions growing in your yard. Most importantly though, Bass season opens on the third Saturday of June every year, so grab your gear and get ready for “Thoroughbred Bassin!”

The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year Sometimes, if you’re in earshot, you can hear me humming or singing tunelessly my ode to opening day of bass season. I shamelessly co-opt the melody

of one of my favorite Christmas songs and add my own lyrics.

They go like this; “The basses are biting, the fishing’s exciting, it’s finally heeeerrrrrre! It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Not exactly Grammy caliber but you get the point. If you have been waiting expectantly for this happy day to arrive, you may be singing your own opening day song.

More likely though, you are girding yourself for battle with one of the most willing opponents swimming in the local waters.

Bass anglers are a dedicated lot and have anticipated opening day since the last tournament they fished last year. It is legal to fish for bass from December until the third Saturday of June, using artificial lures only, but they must be released immediately after being landed. That means they can’t hold tournaments where the fish placed in live wells and taken to a weigh station. That changes on the 18th and almost every lake, pond and river in the area with a boat launch will host a bass fishing tournament.

My Confession You don’t need to be a pro with a shiny new bass boat loaded with gear and tackle worth more than the truck towing it to fully enjoy this annual celebration.

Owning a boat like that may make you the envy of other fishermen at the launch but the boat doesn’t make the angler. Fishing shows and magazines tell you bass fishing should be conducted in a serious, methodical manner where perfect lure presentation and a warrior’s mindset are the keys to success. I have a confession to make that may be considered heretical by my fishing brethren. I can no longer watch and enjoy the many fishing shows that are showing on a dozen or more cable channels at any given time.

I just can’t do it! I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been in the business for over 25 years and fishing since I was a kid or if it’s my natural aversion to infomercials. Even most fishing magazines can’t hold my interest for long. The pitch is always the same: “In order to be successful like me, (picture grinning professional fisherman) you need to use this rod and reel (courtesy of sponsor) and throw this lure

(courtesy of sponsor). And by the way, I couldn’t have fished this spot if not for my (pick a brand) boat (courtesy of sponsor).”

Maybe I’m just getting old, but I remember when there was less emphasis on commercialization and more actual instruction. Don’t get me wrong, you can learn a lot about fishing watching fishing shows and reading magazines, but you will learn a lot more actually fishing and talking to other fishermen you meet. If you want to take a crash course in bass fishing, join a tournamentfishing club. I would suggest a smaller club where you can fish as a non-boater. If you do this, you will learn more about bass fishing in one season than you will by watching and reading everything you can lay your eyes on.

Bass Fishing Is NOT Rocket Science!

Bass are eager participants most of the time, (except when the weather’s wrong, or it’s the wrong time of the day, or you’re using the wrong bait, or they just aren’t hungry) so all you need to do is make sure your equipment is in good working order with fresh line and a selection of appropriate lures. If you’re not sure about these things, your friendly neighborhood tackle shop can help you out. Bass are aggressive this time of year and will strike a wide variety of lures.

Poppers and buzz baits will draw ferocious strikes and tend to work best early in morning. My favorite

is the Heddon Zara Spook because, as a friend of mine used to say, “It draws BIG fish.” He wasn’t wrong!

When the top water bite dies down and the fish settle down in the weeds, I like to throw plastic worms. The one that I and most other bass fishermen are using with great success is the Yamamoto Senko. If you hate throwing plastic worms, this one will cure you of that affliction. It’s hard to believe that a simple worm modeled after the shape of an old style fountain pen can be so effective. Simply stick a hook once through the center of the worm and you have one of the most effective fish catchers known to man. It’s known as the “Wacky Rig” and there’s almost no way to fish it wrong. Chuck it out to where you think there might be a bass, let it sink toward the bottom while paying attention to your line, see/feel the strike, set the hook, catch the fish – it’s that simple! You can hang it under a bobber or drop shot it in the weeds.

Cast it out and twitch it on a slow retrieve. Just put it in the water and you’re likely to catch a bass. There are jerkbaits and rattlebaits and spinnerbaits and every other type of bait for you to use depending on the conditions or the way you prefer to fish. There are no wrong choices, just plenty of options.

Here Kitty Kitty If you prefer a more laid back style of fishing, leave the lures at home, grab a lantern, a couple flashlights, bait and head

to the Hudson River about sundown. Channel Catfish thrive in the river and are fished for by a growing number of anglers with myself now counted among them. I’ve caught catfish by accident before but had never fished for them. That changed last week when I went with a friend below Lock 5 in Schuylerville. Our tackle was simple - rods rigged with hook and sinker, and our bait was natural - worms and salted minnows. Prepared dough baits and chicken livers are popular too, so we’ll try them next time.

Right away we were catching bullhead. About 11 p.m., something tried to pull Dean Foster’s rod into the river. As I went to assist, a fish started tearing line off one of my rods. We were both hooked up to big fish and laughing like kids. A few minutes later we were comparing our fish. Deans’ is a 20+ pound carp and mine a channel cat pushing 15 pounds. We ended up fishing until 3 a.m. catching more bullhead and missing a few strikes. I think I like this catfishing, its fun and I can’t wait for the next time!

FTFA Soccer Saratoga Open House FTFA Soccer Saratoga is holding an Open House for male soccer players interested in joining this local travel soccer club for the 2016-2017 season. The Open House will take place on Monday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 22 at the Saratoga Independent School soccer fields. Recreation Department will again be offering an extensive and varied list of programs and clinics for summer 2016. Choose from boys and girls basketball, volleyball, baseball, field hockey, tennis, boys and girls lacrosse, soccer, cheerleading, skateboarding, softball, track, running, sandlot baseball, flag football and ice skating lessons.

Saratoga Springs Recreation Department 2016 Fall Soccer Registration Has Begun!

Follow your goals with the Saratoga Springs Recreation Department’s 2016 Fall Soccer program! This program is open to children grades Pre K-12 and will run September10-October 29, 2016. Players will be separated by grade and exposed to skill development based on age and skill level. Register before August 15 in order to receive the Early Bird Discount.

Two volunteer coaches per team are needed at all levels. Registration fee is waived for the child of each coach who registers by August 15. Sign up at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center at 15 Vanderbilt Avenue.

L J Visits Saratoga Stadium!

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Well, now – look who we spotted rumbling up Broadway on a beautiful Friday evening! Why, it was none other than All-star NBA Great Larry Johnson. LJ, who was the #1 overall draft pick in 1991 (and subsequent Rookie of the Year) for the Charlotte Hornets, also had a big run with the Knicks from 1996-2001, reaching the playoffs all five years with the team and the finals in the 1998-99 season. He also had an acting role in “Space Jam” and earned the nickname "Grandmama" because of his role in a popular series of commercials for Converse. LJ was at the Saratoga Stadium (389 Broadway) to hang with his fans and watch Game 4 of the NBA Finals, as well as to taste some of Executive Chef Zach Cutler’s fabulous wings, along with ‘Grandma’s Mac and Cheese,’- a slam-dunk if ever there was one.
