Histories mysteries are so fascinating and solving them is rewarding. A group of photos were found in an antique shop recently and thankfully some were identified with a name on the reverse. A cabinet style card with a photographer’s imprint of Epler & Arnold Saratoga, N.Y. shows a distinguished man wearing pincenez glasses. On the reverse someone had written the name – George L. Corliss. An unfamiliar name to me, I began searching for him on Ancestry. com. From census and death records I found he was born in Providence, Rhode Island on January 1, 1863 to Charles and Anna Laing Corliss. Unfortunately, he never knew his father who died barely two months before George L. was born. And George L. died at the young age of 39 and is buried in Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs. His life had been cut short due to medical problems.

The Corlis name is renowned throughout the region. Captain John Corlis, great grandfather of George L., of Haverhill, Massachusetts had served in the Revolutionary War and later moved to Easton, Washington County. John’s son, Hiram, was a physician and surgeon in Greenwich. Hiram had at least two sons. One was George L.’s father, Charles, and the other was George H. Corliss. George H. Corliss designed, built, and patented a sewing machine in 1843, three years before Elias Howe, who is credited with the invention and perfection of the sewing machine.

George moved from Washington County to Providence, Rhode Island, to work more closely with metal foundries. Here he studied draftsmanship and created the steam engine that revolutionized the efficient production of industrial power. His company is also credited with building parts for the iron-clad Monitor during the Civil War. The Centennial Celebration held in Philadelphia in 1876

was powered by an enormous Corliss steam engine. When George H. died in 1888, he had 48 patents issued to him with 12 more pending.

George L.’s father, Charles also moved from Washington County to Providence, R. I. where he was employed at Corliss & Nightingale, his elder brother’s company. Charles died in November 1862 less than two months before the birth of his son. The widow, Anna Laing Corliss was left with three young children to care for. Within three years they moved back to her hometown of Schuylerville. By 1875 they were living in Saratoga Springs with her sister and brother-inlaw, Johnathan Howland.

George L. attended the public schools until the age of sixteen. He then moved to Chicago where he was employed as a bookkeeper for the Commercial National Bank of Chicago for the next eight years. While he was in Chicago his mother died in 1880. He was just seventeen. He became active in the Democratic Party in Chicago and served as secretary and treasurer of the 9th Ward Democratic Party.

Returning to Saratoga Springs in 1887 he entered the employment of the First National Bank, a position he held for a dozen years. He also served as a member of the Board of Water Commissions. Subsequently he was elected supervisor of Saratoga Springs in 1899, a position he held until 1902. His sister, Mary Emma Corliss, married Edgar T. Brackett, a prominent attorney and business leader in Saratoga Springs. Brackett had been a lawyer for Richard Canfield (the Prince of Gamblers), but later staunchly opposed gambling in Saratoga. He served in the New York State Senate from 1896 until 1906 and then returned in 1909-1912. George L’s older brother, Charles was involved in Troy politics where he was deputy commissioner of public safety.

George L. and his wife, Florence K. Hubbard, were

married in 1895. They were the parents of two daughters, Florence (1896-1917) and Elizabeth (1899-1985). They lived at 203 Caroline Street. George L.’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 39. He had fractured his left leg five years earlier as a result of a fall. It never healed properly and troubled him ever since. In early February 1902 he became ill with chronic nephritis, kidney inflammation that causes swelling of the hands and feet because the kidneys do not function properly to carry off excess fluid. With treatment he seemed to be improving when an artery in his right leg ruptured causing gangrene to set in (antibiotics would not be available for another forty years).

The doctors decided amputation above the right knee was necessary. The operation was performed at his Caroline Street residence by Dr. D. C. Moriata, and Drs. Fish, Lester and Thompson. The anesthesiologist was Dr. Thomas Bennett of New York City. According to newspaper reports the operation lasted twenty minutes. George L. seemed to improve for a day until edema (fluid) in the lungs caused his death on March 7, 1902. His obituary was published in numerous newspapers throughout the northeast. The funeral was conducted from his Caroline Street home with the burial at the Greenridge Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, his sister, and brother.

Saratoga’s All-American Celebration Returns July 4

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— Saratoga’s All-American Celebration is back on July 4 in downtown Saratoga Springs.

The day will include the annual Firecracker4 Road Race, the Saratoga-Wilton Elks’ 55th annual Flag Day parade, a family-friendly concert featuring Tops of Trees and a spectacular fireworks display.

All events are free and open to the public.

This year will also feature the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Flag Day parade, rescheduled due to June’s Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

- Firecracker Road Race 4 begins at 9 a.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center

- Saratoga-Wilton Elks’ 55th annual Flag Day parade steps off at 5 p.m. on Broadway

- Tops of Trees performs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Ellsworth Jones Place stage

- Fireworks display starts shortly after 9 p.m. from the top level of the Saratoga Springs City Center Garage

The event is organized by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. Saratoga’s AllAmerican Celebration draws thousands of attendees each year.

Bicyclists Welcome at July 4 Parade in Saratoga Springs

The Saratoga Wilton Flag Day Parade on July 4 will mark the inaugural parade for the Bikeatoga Bicycle Battalion.

All persons with a bike, large or small bike, e-bike or pedal powered are invited patriotically decorate their bikes and selves for the Saratoga Elks Flag

Day Parade, according to a statement from Dan Lynch, of bikeatoga.org.

Cyclists will be meeting on 2nd Street, between N. Broadway and Bryan St. starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Bikeatoga Bicycle Brigade will be stepping out shortly after 5 p.m. and riding in front of Santa Claus.

July 4 Celebration in Saratoga Springs features live music, Flag Day parade, and a fireworks display.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dawn J. McMahon, 88, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Wesley Nursing Home, after spending her last 25 years living at Embury Apartments on the Wesley campus. She was born in Oneida, New York on January 20, 1936 to Ralph Urben and Bernice Bea Bouveau. She moved to Saratoga Springs as a young teenager and loved the city where she would grow up. She attended St. Clement’s and St. Peter’s schools. She would marry and have four children at a young age, and was always a proud and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved

the house on Nelson Avenue where she spent most of her life, and would often make treats for many of the neighborhood kids that would come around to play with her own children. After raising her children, she decided to take classes at the local Saratoga BOCES to start her own cosmetology career, of which she was so proud. She still loved working with children and was a much- loved teacher’s aide in the Saratoga Springs City School system for several years. She would later meet and marry a man with whom she would spend the remaining years of her life, traveling to Florida and finally settling in the apartment that she loved on the top floor of the Embury East tower, where she enjoyed the fantastic view over the city that she cherished and knew so well.

She is predeceased by her husband, Patrick McMahon (April 2012); her brother, Bruce Urben (April 2023); her oldest daughter, Michelle (Nichols) Meisburger (January 2017); and her grandson, Shawn Nichols (September 1992).

She is survived by her son, Michael (Robin) Nichols of Wilton; her daughter, Melody (John) Jaenisch of Florida; and her son, Mark Holiday of Saratoga Springs. She is also

survived by her granddaughters, Miranda (Frank) Luman and Ariana Scheidt, both of South Glens Falls; grandsons, Peter (Samantha) Meisburger of Ballston Spa; Eric (Jessie) Nichols of Ft. Edward; David (Caitlin) Nichols of Hudson Falls; and Ryan Nichols of Union City, New Jersey; as well as great-grandchildren, Brandin Luman, Raygen Luman and Graham Meisburger.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call on Main Street in the village of Corinth. Investigation into the matter resulted in the arrest of William J. Arnold, 25, of Corinth, charged with criminal mischief in the 3rd degree (class E felony). Arnold is accused of intentionally damaging a television and a PlayStation belonging to another person in an amount exceeding $250. He was arraigned in the Corinth Town Court and released to pretrial services pending further action in the matter.

Philip J. McCulloch, 36, of Halfmoon, and Tashawna S.D. Daniel, 38, of Cohoes, were each charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree (class E felony), in connection with a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of the city of Troy. McCulloch was additionally charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the 3rd degree. Both persons were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Halfmoon Town Court on a later date.

Aaron B. Mondore, 48, was charged with criminal mischief in the 3rd degree (class E felony) and criminal mischief in the 4th degree (class A misdemeanor). Mondore is accused of intentionally damaging property belonging to another person in an amount exceeding $250 and of intentionally preventing that person from communicating a request for emergency assistance by physically taking their cellular telephone from them and throwing it into a pool. He was released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Wilton Town Court on a later date.

Joshua D. Temple, 32, of Cohoes, was charged with bail jumping in the 2nd degree (class E felony). Temple is accused of failing to appear in court as directed for original charges of grand larceny in the 4th degree and a previous bail jumping in the 2nd degree charge from the same matter. He sent to the Saratoga County Jail in lieu of bail pending further action in the matter in the Halfmoon Town Court.

Tyler J. Marley, 31, of Schenectady, was arrested on an arrest warrant for burglary in the 3rd degree (class D felony). Marley is

accused of stealing from the Home Depot in the town of Halfmoon on March 20, 2024, after having previously been noticed that he was forbidden to be in the store. He was released to pretrial services pending further action in the matter.

Jacqueline Shafer, 47, of Schenectady, was arrested on a warrant for grand larceny in the 2nd degree (class C felony) and forgery in the 2nd degree (class D felony). Shafer is accused of stealing money in excess of $50,000 while employed at an apartment complex in the town of Malta between August 2021 and April 2022. She is also charged with falsely making, completing or altering a written instrument with the intent to defraud, deceive or injure another. She was released to pretrial services pending further action in the matter.

Kenneth J. Rossen, 61, of Malta, was charged with possession of a forged instrument in the 2nd degree (class D felony), operating a motor vehicle with a suspended or revoked registration, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the 2nd degree (unclassified misdemeanors), improper plates, and improper or no

signal (infractions). Rossen is accused of having a forged temporary license plate on his vehicle, of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, and of operating a motor vehicle while his license to do so was suspended three or more times on three separate dates for failure to answer a summons, appear, or pay a fine. He was issued appearance tickets returnable to the Clifton Park Town Court on a later date.

John B. Fleeman, 26, of Fort Edward, was arrested on a warrant issued from

Saratoga Town Court for criminal contempt in the 1st degree (class E felony). Fleeman is accused of violating an order of protection by following the protected party and engaging in a verbal argument with them. The charge was upgraded to a felony due to a previous conviction for criminal contempt in the 2nd degree within the preceding 5 years. He was arraigned in the Galway Town Court and sent to the Saratoga County Jail without bail pending further action in the matter.

Thursday, July 4 - 2:00 pm, Visitor Center Patio. Most Americans, including those in the Continental Army, would have first heard the stirring words of the Declaration of Independence in a public reading. Park Volunteer Joe Craig recreates such a scene.

Picture Saratoga - Friday July 5 (Rain Date July 12), 8:00 am to 10:00 am, Meet at Visitor Center Lawn. Uniforming the Continental Army - Sunday, July 14, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Visitor Center Lawn. The American Northern Army encamped at Saratoga Battlefield in 1777 included thousands of Continental soldiers from New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. These soldiers wore a variety of colorful uniforms made of wool or linen, all of which needed to be hand tailored. Their leather shoes were made by hand using a careful, painstaking process. Come to the park to see an 18th-century tailor and cordwainer (not a cobbler!) make these uniform parts using authentic period techniques.

Frederick Douglass Returns to Schuylerville - Saturday, July 27, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, Schuyler House. Join us as we commemorate and examine 250 years of the United States and meet the great abolitionist and freedom fighter Fredrick Douglass as he returns to Schuylerville. Despite promising in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” the new nation that emerged after the Battles of Saratoga and the

American Revolution did not begin to approach those lofty ideals. Among other failings, the nation’s continued reliance on slavery, present from the beginning here in New York, and the exclusion of women from voting were just two of the most glaring. Frederick Douglass, himself having experienced enslavement, emerged as one of the most forceful advocates for addressing both in the 19th century.

Frederick Douglass Speaks on Democracy - Saturday, July 27, 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Town of Saratoga Town Hall (12 Spring St., Schuylerville. Frederick Douglass Speaks on Democracy Inspired by the ideals of the American Revolution and the sacrifices of his forefathers, the Black men of the Continental Army and militias who served throughout the war and here at Saratoga,

Frederick Douglass argued for the creation of the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. After the war, he continued advocating for an expanded idea of democracy. One place he did that was in Schuylerville, on June 8, 1849. Nathan Richardson is an author, poet, and historian who has performed as Frederick Douglass around the United States for more than a decade.

The Heritage Area Visitor Center & Saratoga Springs History Museum Kick Off Walking Tour

The Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, in partnership with the Saratoga Springs History Museum, announces the return of their 2024 Grand, Gilded and Glorious: A Saratoga Stroll Guided Walking Tour. This 90-minute guided walking tour will guide participants from the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center to Congress Park and will conclude with a complete tour of the elegant Canfield Casino

and admission to the Saratoga Springs History Museum. The 2024 tours run Tuesday – Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to noon from July 2 – Oct. 19. County Hopes To Rename Saratoga National Historical Park as “Saratoga National Battlefield Park” An Update From Impressions of Saratoga

On Wednesday, June 19, at 3:30 in the morning there was a small fire in the basement of the 368 Broadway building. No one was injured and no businesses/ apartments suffered damages. Thanks to the courageous building manager everyone was safely out of the building within minutes and emergency services were on site. It was determined a pipe had burst under Phila Street causing a flood in the basement leading to an electrical fire.

With that said, there were electrical damages and Impressions, and their neighbors, unable to open at this time BUT as you know Impressions never stops! And always finds the silver lining. All operations have shifted to, The Dark Horse Mercantile (445 Broadway) for the time being. Updates will be posted on social media (and occasional emails) to let you know the progress. “If possible other “shopping options” will be

added, we are looking into any possibilities to make sure we are there for our customers... and the hungry dogs who are looking for their daily treats!” says co-owner Maddy Zanetti.

BALLSTON SPA— At its monthly meeting held June 18 at the county complex in Ballston Spa, the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution to rename the Saratoga National Historical Park as the Saratoga National Battlefield Park

The resolution, introduced by and brought forward to the supervisors by the county Law and Finance Committee, requests the U.S. Congress and the National Park Service consider the change as the park commemorates the Battles of Saratoga, according to the resolution.

“That was the original

park’s name and a unique identifier,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Phil Barrett said.

“The term “Battlefield” more accurately reflects the historical significance of the site, emphasizing the crucial military engagements that took place (and) will enhance public understanding and appreciation of its historical importance,” states the measure.

American troops engaged in combat with the British army at Freeman’s Farm in September 1777, and at Bemis Heights a few weeks later. Overall, approximately 22,000 forces engaged in the battles with nearly 1,500 estimated casualties, according to the American Battlefield Trust. The American victory persuaded France to sign a treaty with the United States against Britain.

“We believe that is a prudent step to provide tourists and visitors with something more obvious to review and know relating to the description of the park itself,” said Barrett, after the 20-0 vote was approved to send the request off to Congress.

The year 2027 will mark the 250th anniversary of the battles at Saratoga, two battles which historians have called the turning point of the American Revolution.

“From New York to the Nuclear Navy” Opens June 29 at State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs: Exhibit Tracks the History of the Nuclear Navy In New York

— A new exhibit at the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs highlights the history of the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and the contributions to the advancement of the program made in New York.

The exhibit provides an immersive experience that includes over 60 artifacts from across the program, kids activities and QR codes that provide a portal to films, presentations and websites with additional information.

Titled “From New York to the Nuclear Navy,” the exhibition was developed in a collaboration between the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, Naval Reactors, the USS Nautilus Museum in Groton, Connecticut and the New York State Military Museum.

To celebrate the opening of the exhibit to the public there will be ice cream, a brass band, activities for children, and representatives from the U.S. Navy and Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel on hand from 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Saturday June 29.

Founded in 1948 by Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) has total responsibility for all aspects of the Navy’s nuclear propulsion, including research, design, construction, testing, operation, maintenance, and ultimate disposition of naval nuclear propulsion plants. The program’s responsibility includes all related facilities, radiological controls, environmental safety, and health matters, as well as selection, training and assignment of personnel.

Since the very beginning, New York State has played an important role in the program; from the first contract signed in 1946 with General Electric in Schenectady to design and develop prototype nuclear propulsion systems to today and the advanced design work performed at the Knolls Laboratory in Niskayuna and the nuclear operator training occurring at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site in West Milton.

The exhibit will include over sixty artifacts highlighting the history of

MANHATTAN TO SARATOGA: Bicycle Advocates Look Back for Inspiration for Ride In The Future

SARATOGA SPRINGS —A

historical marker celebrating an 1879 bicycle ride to Saratoga Springs by “America’s first longdistance bike tourist” Wentworth Rollins was placed on Broadway

this week.

Saratoga nonprofit Bikeatoga unveiled the newly installed marker at 341 Broadway to commemorate Wentworth Rollins’ bike ride. The journey, mostly by bicycle, landed Rollins in Saratoga Springs in early July 1879. He subsequently spent the next two

weeks seeing “all that is to be seen on a bicycle around Saratoga,” according to newspaper reports of the time, before continuing at month’s end on his 1,300-mile total journey to Chicago.

“The 1890s bicycle boom changed America and it changed Saratoga Springs,” said Bikeatoga Advocacy Chair Ed Lindner, who briefly spoke before unveiling the sign during the June 26 ceremony, attended by about a dozen people, some draped in late 19th century period dress that included straw hats, vests tied up high and coffee-color cloth-top Victorian

button boots.

Four weeks ago, the group celebrated the installation of a new historical marker commemorating the 1898 Union Avenue bike path, unveiled in front of the Empire State College building at 2 Union Ave.

“We have a nationally known world-class tourist city that’s surrounded by miles and miles of great rural cycling routes,” said Lindner, who 15 or 20 years ago took avidly to bike-riding after his orthopedist suggested the activity as an alternative to running.

“If the city of Saratoga Springs

can complete the bike lane from Railroad Run to Congress Park downtown, it will be possible to recreate Wentworth Rollins’ 1879 run,” Lindner said.

That connector would act as a component to the county’s undertaking of extending a route from Ballston Spa to the Saratoga Spa State Park – a project anticipated to be completed during the next few years. “Then, it will become possible once again to stand on a corner in midtown Manhattan and to set out on a bicycle to Saratoga,” Lindner said.

Saratoga Summer Concert Series in Congress Park to Kick Off July 7

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Summer Concert Series returns to Congress Park for the 2024 season, kicking off on Sunday, July 7 with Nocturne Troubadours.

The Saratoga Summer Concert Series will take place Sundays in July and Tuesdays in August. Shows will begin at 7 p.m. at the War Memorial in Congress Park and each concert will be approximately 90 minutes. The rain location will be inside the Heritage Area Visitor Center, located at 297 Broadway.

First up: July 7 – Nocturne Troubadours. Songs, magic, life, and the spirit of music delivered with soul, the cosmos, and stringed instrumentation. In the tradition of musicians like Gram Parsons, George Harrison, Townes Van Zandt.

Future: July 14 – Fenimore Blues, July 21 – Proudest Monkeys Band; July 28 –Skippy and the Pistons; Aug. 6 – Rustic Spirit; Aug. 13 – Alex Torres & His Latin Orchestra; Aug. 20 – Garland Nelson and Soul Session, and Aug. 27 –Mostly Modern Festival.

The free, family-friendly concert series is a program of the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center in partnership with Discover Saratoga, Saratoga Arts and the City of Saratoga Springs.

Albany-Saratoga Speedway Housing Development Plan Meets Resistance

MALTA — A plan to build retail stores and hundreds of residential units on the current site of the AlbanySaratoga Speedway was met with resistance at a Malta Town Board meeting earlier this month.

During the June 3 meeting, representatives from Five Corners Development and The NRP Group delivered a lengthy presentation about their proposed mixed-use Camber Ridge development during the public comment period, which is usually reserved for town residents to make three-minute statements. The NRP Group’s Jonathan Gertman said he hoped the presentation would “shock and delight” the town.

After the presentation went on for about 20 minutes, Councilperson Barbara Conner interrupted to say that she had no idea the presentation was going to happen and that discussion of the Camber Ridge development wasn’t on the agenda. “I don’t know anything about this and I feel a little blindsided,” Conner said. “I’m looking at some of our friends and neighbors out there

who have things to say to us and I don’t think this is the right time, and I would’ve appreciated knowing we were going to have this kind of presentation.”

A meeting attendee blasted the developers’ presentation, calling it “totally inappropriate” and “absolutely ridiculous.” The presentation had interrupted many Malta residents who wanted to speak about a proposed State Police barracks

in the town’s Luther Forest neighborhood.

The nearly 50-acre Camber Ridge development is set to include “some element of senior housing, some element of multifamily housing across mixed incomes, as well as the potential for affordable home ownership,” according to the June 3 presentation.

A conceptual plan showed buildings that would house a

brewery, commercial space, apartments, townhomes, green space, and a courtyard/amenity area.

“This multiphase mixeduse project aims to transform the recreational site into a vibrant community consisting of housing, retail, community amenities, and walking trails,” said a statement on the Camber Ridge website.

The development would

replace the Albany-Saratoga Speedway, where racing may no longer occur after the 2025 season. The developers said they planned to keep the track’s legacy alive to “appease race fan enthusiasts.”

It will be some time before the project can be fully approved by the town. The developers are making a formal proposal this summer and hope to reach the site plan approval process by the end of next year.

Bon Voyage: Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa Celebrate 2024 Graduates

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa High Schools both celebrated their Class of 2024 commencement ceremonies at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) this week, with the Scotties gracing the SPAC grounds on Tuesday afternoon and the Blue Streaks following suit on Wednesday morning.

Speakers at both events praised graduates for persevering through the COVID-19 pandemic and for giving back to the community.

Ballston Spa

The Ballston Spa commencement ceremony opened with the high school ensemble performing an orchestral rendition of the Coldplay song “Clocks,” perhaps a nod to the young adults reflecting on the passage of time.

In a speech, Student Government President Catherine Miller praised her class for its open-mindedness. “The ability to question and appreciate the opinions and ideas of others made for a strong and respectful learning community,” Miller said.

“The changes coming will not be easy,” Miller added.

“There will be days when you want to give up, but you won’t.”

Valedictorian Brooke Cearley echoed Miller’s comments about challenging but exciting times ahead for her classmates. “It’s time to be uncomfortable and face change and walk into the unexpected,” Cearley said.

After all the diplomas were handed out to the Ballston Spa graduates, air horns and golden confetti filled the air in celebration.

Saratoga Springs Saratoga Springs showcased its talented musicians and singers as attendees filled the SPAC amphitheater on Wednesday morning. 448 students gathered for the 151st high school commencement ceremony.

Speakers emphasized the Class of 2024’s commitment to bettering their community. The graduating class donated more than 180 pints of blood to the Red Cross; and on Seniors Giveback Day, more than 600 hours of time was donated to local nonprofits.

“Your school spirit and care for each other are what define you as a group of students,” said High School Principal Michelle Tsao.

Before diplomas were handed out, some students received special recognition.

Superintendent of Schools Dr.

Michael Patton honored the six graduates who will go on to serve in the armed forces. Principal Tsao also awarded the 113th annual Yaddo Medal, which she called “the most prestigious award given by our school district,” to students Carlie

Friedman and Adam Brown.

A moment of silence was observed for Anthony Stefanacci, a student who tragically passed away last month. Anthony’s tearful parents went up on stage to receive his diploma, as well as a medal honoring his civic engagement.

After being presented with their diplomas, the graduating class tossed their caps into the air in celebration of their achievements.

Outgoing Saratoga School Board Members Honored

— At the final regular business meeting of the school year on June 20, two outgoing Saratoga Springs City School District Board of Education members

were honored by their colleagues. Amanda Ellithorpe, who had been with the board for three years, and John Ellis, who served for nine years, both received special recognition by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Patton and Board President Tony Krackeler. To commemorate their

tenures, Ellithorpe and Ellis will have their names engraved on bricks outside the main entrance to the high school. They also received gifts and cards from the board.

“You’ve brought so much wise perspective and understanding of employees,” fellow board member Dr. John Brueggemann told Ellis. “We’re going to lose a lot of institutional memory and a lot of distinctive perspective when you go.”

“I always appreciated how both of you…you are who you are. There’s no veneer. I appreciate how real you are,” said board member Connie Woytowich.

Two new members will join the board for the upcoming school year: Deb Amory, a professor at Empire State University, and Matt Kopans, a

development officer for Planned Parenthood of Greater New York. Krackeler said that Amory and Kopans would begin

their orientation on June 21. Woytowich will also return to the board after winning reelection in May.

Thefresh berry season starts in June at the farmers’ market, and you can find berries and berry-licious products throughout. Discover local products to pair with these seasonal delicacies: cheeses, breads, meats, peanut butter, chocolate, yogurt, and much more. Shopping the market is a culinary delight!

Here are some fun and exciting berry facts as you shop:

1. The tiny hairs on raspberries and blackberries are called ‘styles.’ Styles serve to protect the berry from damage and are edible.

2. Raspberries and blackberries are aggregate fruits, meaning that the big piece of fruit you enjoy is dozens of tiny fruits growing together. These little fruits, or bumps, are called drupelets.

3.A true berry is a fruit that grows from one flower with one ovary. Strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are considered aggregate fruits since the flowers they grow from have more than one ovary. Blueberries, tomatoes, bananas, and avocados are considered actual berries since they grow from flowers containing one ovary.

4. On the outside of each strawberry are about 200 tiny seeds.

5. The silver color on blueberries is called ‘bloom.’ Bloom acts as a natural barrier to seal in moisture within the blueberry.

Grilled Chicken Salad with Blueberries

YIELDS: 4 servings | PREP TIME: 20 min

INGREDIENTS:

*Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 4-6 cups romaine lettuce *

• 1 red onion, thinly sliced *

• 2-3 cups blueberries *

• 4 grilled chicken breasts, or more, sliced *

• 1 cup pecans

• 70 grams goat cheese, or to taste *

• 1 cup salad dressing, divided or to taste

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Toss the romaine lettuce, red onions, blueberries, sliced chicken breasts, and pecans together.

2. Top with crumbled goat cheese and sliced avocado if desired.

3. Serve with the salad dressing on the side or drizzled on top.

NOTE:

To grill the chicken, season it as you wish and grill the chicken breasts for 6 to 8 minutes on one side with the grill covered. Flip and grill for another 6 to 8 minutes. Cook time will vary depending on the size of your chicken breast, so use an instant-read meat thermometer to check for doneness.

With the celebration of the Fourth of July around the corner, many of us may be planning an Independence Day celebration or attending a gathering. Having a picnic with family and friends on a beautiful day can be a time that creates those unforgettable moments and memories that last a life time.

Having or attending a picnic remains one of my favorite things to do during the summer. This stems back to my childhood. As I have mentioned in past articles, I am one of five children. Having two sisters and two brothers always meant that the house was crazy and my mother would do what she could to keep us outdoors. Picnic time was a word that would stir up excitement and anticipation of having our favorite potato and egg salads, hamburgers, hot dogs, and other fabulous items that our family and friends would bring to the picnic. One tool that I continue to use to make some of my favorite picnic dishes is the egg slicer. The egg slicer is a kitchen utensil that is used to cut hardboiled eggs into uniform round slices. This kitchen utensil is typically made of aluminum or stainless steel with wire blades that slice through the egg as it rests in an oval pocket. An egg slicer can be used to create individual slices for sandwiches, salads, canapes, or other similar needs.

Even though it is somewhat of a single-purpose tool, I get more use out of a simple egg slicer than just about any other item in my kitchen. Here are a group of common kitchen ingredients that can be used with an egg slicer. Once you realize how easy it is to use the slicer over slicing manually, you’ll have a hard time going back—at least, if you’re slicing a large quantity at once, or small, slippery things like...

OLIVES

DELICIOUS SLICES

Hello my Foodie Friends!

Summer is prime time for fun. With most kids out of school, family vacations in full swing, and warm weather to enjoy, it’s the unofficial season of leisure and the Fourth of July makes it the perfect time to celebrate.

Whether you are team green or black, an egg slicer will make slicing olives for everything from simple salads to pizza toppings effortless. Make sure to place the appointed olive in the center of the slicer and quickly bring the slicing top to hold it securely in place before slicing it, since they can be quite slippery and apt to roll. Slicing a few olives should do the trick for most recipes that call for sliced olives.

BANANAS

No classic fruit salad is complete without the addition of sliced bananas. Same goes for banana pancakes. It might be easy enough to slice bananas (even without a cutting board), but having them uniform and cut in a flash is a whole other level of efficiency.

This method works best with bananas that are not too ripe: cut a banana in quarters, so each piece can be sliced properly, then center the banana and press the blades down.

BUTTER

The egg slicer is your weapon of choice for slicing beautiful, picture-perfect pats of butter for your guests. Cut a stick of butter in quarters to make sure each piece can properly be sliced, the center the butter before slicing.

KIWIS

Kiwis are delicious in everything, from fruit tarts to fruit salads, but not always the easiest to cut by hand. Enter the egg slicer. Peel the skin (check out this link for the easiest way to do it!), cut the kiwis in half, then place each one in the cradle of the slicer to make uniform slices.

MUSHROOMS

There is nothing better than sliced mushrooms as a pizza topping or grilled alongside a burger with onions. For an easier way to cut an entire mushroom, there is no better kitchen appliance than the egg slicer.

STRAWBERRIES

Sliced strawberries are

extremely versatile and can go on top of anything, from pancakes to ice cream sundaes. To quickly slice an entire strawberry, center it in the cradle of the slicer; seconds later, you’ll have pretty uniform pieces for all your baking and cooking whims.

COOKED CARROTS

Cooked, sliced carrots add a pop of color to many meals, including salads and fried rice.

HOT DOGS

Sliced hot dogs have many uses, including being used as toppings on pizza or a great addition to chili. After cooking the hot dogs, let them cool off, then cut them into quarters so they’ll fit into the cradle of the slicer.

FRESH MOZZARELLA

Whether you are making caprese salad or simply want to add some slices of mozzarella to your salad, slicing fresh mozzarella has never been simpler using an egg slicer.

Cobb Salad

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE SALAD

• 6 cups chopped Romaine lettuce, can use a mix of Romaine and watercress

• 2 chicken breasts, grilled and chopped

• 8 slices cooked bacon, chopped

• 4 hard boiled eggs, sliced

• 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

• 2 avocados, sliced

• 4 oz crumbled Roquefort cheese

• 2 tablespoons chopped chives, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

• Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste FOR THE DRESSING

• 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

• 1/4 cup red wine vinegar

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 2 teaspoons honey

• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

• 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1. Place the lettuce in a large bowl or on a large platter. Arrange the chicken, bacon, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, avocado slices, and crumbled cheese in lines over the greens. Garnish with chives and season with salt and pepper, to taste

Two-Day Saratoga Jazz Fest Returns This Weekend with Lake Street Dive, Norah Jones, Stanley Clarke

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The 47th Annual Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz Festival returns this weekend for a full twoday and two-stage festival experience on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

The event will feature a roster of 22 musical groups and 10 festival debuts.

The line-up is co-headlined by contemporary artists Lake Street Dive, Norah Jones, Laufey, and Samara Joy, alongside jazz and blues legends Stanley Clarke with his band N*4Ever, Terence Blanchard Sextet and Coco Montoya.

Headliner Lake Street Dive will make their festival debut on Saturday, June 29.

Returning following her triumphant festival debut in 2023 is Samara Joy, and returning by popular demand to headline the festival on Sunday is singer and pianist Norah Jones.

Music icons returning to the festival include jazz and blues legends Stanley Clarke with his exciting new band N*4Ever, which is a celebration of his long-time collaborator Chick Corea and their time together in Return to Forever; opera composer Terence Blanchard with his Sextet, and blues guitar virtuoso and vocalist Coco Montoya.

Open Call for Artists: Jazz at the Lake Gallery Exhibition –Synesthesia: Seeing Sound

LAKE GEORGE — In celebration of Jazz at the Lake’s 40th anniversary, The Lake George Arts Project is putting together a groundbreaking exhibition, Synesthesia: Seeing Sound. Designed to challenge perceptions, blur the lines between sight and sound, and spark a visual dialogue that echoes the emotions and rhythms found in music.

The exhibition will be on view Aug. 28 – Sept. 15 and will coincide with the 40th Anniversary Jazz at the Lake

Festival Sept. 13-15 in Shepard Park.

The juror for this exhibition is independent curator Dan Cameron. Cameron’s projects have long aspired to bring together visual and performing arts. After more than ten years as Senior Curator at the New Museum, in 2007 Cameron founded the triennial exhibition Prospect New Orleans, which has invited artists from around the world to create contemporary art installations throughout the birthplace of jazz.

Artists over the age of 18 living within 100 miles of Lake George are invited to submit up to two 2/D or 3/D works prepared for exhibition following the guidelines found on the Arts Project’s website: www. lakgeorgearts.org. All submissions must be made through the online form.

The Adirondack Thunder announced last week that the team has extended its affiliation with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the AHL’s Utica

Comets through the 2025-26 season.

“We are coming off our best season yet, both on and off the ice. With the help and support from New Jersey and

Utica, we are looking forward to putting another winning team on the ice this season while also developing prospects,” said Adirondack Thunder President Jeff Mead in a statement.

This past season, the ECHL’s Thunder won their third regular-season North Division title, finished first in the Eastern Conference during the regular season, and advanced to the Eastern Conference Final, where they lost to Florida in six games. The team also set an attendance record with 17 sellouts.

Saratoga Rowers Compete in Youth National Championships

SARASOTA, FLORIDA

— Despite not having the advantages of a public school athletic program, Mohawk Homeschool Rowing Association’s Christian Penny captured a silver medal in the Men’s U17 1x at the USRowing Youth National Championships in Florida earlier this month.

Christian, who lives in Saratoga Springs, was coached by his father Chris Penny at the event.

“Based on his times,” Chris said, “we were pretty confident

or hopeful that he would make it to the grand finals.”

In the finals, Christian finished with a time of 07:38.46, about 7 seconds behind first.

Chris, who is also board president of the Mohawk Homeschool Rowing Association, said it’s important for homeschoolers to “have an athletic outlet that isn’t just recreation, where you can compete at a pretty high level.”

The association doesn’t have the funding or resources of public school rowing teams, and thus subsists on dues and private fundraising efforts.

“Homeschoolers are sort of a different breed,” Chris said. “Our resources are relatively limited.”

But none of that has stopped Christian from

becoming a successful rower. He took up the sport in fifth grade and hopes to continue through college. He placed first in the Men’s U17 Single event at the New York State Rowing Championships, which allowed him to qualify for the Youth National Championships in Florida.

GIRLS AND BOYS TEAMS SUCCESSFUL

The Saratoga Rowing Association (SRA) also competed at nationals, with six teams qualifying for the event in Florida.

“After having watched the group qualify in person at the State Championships, I can attest that this group was on a clear mission to not only achieve top results with the most senior boats, but qualify and contend with a strong deep program,” SRA’s Co-Executive Director Eric Catalano told Saratoga TODAY.

The U16 girls team finished 9th in the country in the eights division.

Team members included Emilia Acquavella (coxswain), Sophie Sampanthar (seat 8/ stroke), Caroline Jackson (seat 7), Isabella “Pisa” Bonitatibus (seat 6), Meghan Kempf (seat 5), Sabrina Maglienti (seat 4), Rylie Sheldon (seat 3) Katie Oke (seat 2), and Catherine Fedoroff (seat 1/bow).

The team is coached by Ronnie Cantrell, who recently accepted an offer to become the men’s freshman rowing coach at the University of Virginia.

Other SRA achievements included top 10 finishes with the senior boys eight and the senior girls eight.

“We, the greater community, are so proud of the work and effort the youth rowers put into this sport, and were thrilled to see those efforts rewarded with strong performances at the national level,” Catalano said.

Saratoga Distance Runners Win “Triple Crown”

SARATOGA SPRINGS —

The Saratoga Springs varsity boys runners won the “triple crown” of distance running this year, a feat that Coach Shane Zanetti said may have never happened before in New York State history.

In November, they won the New York State Class A CrossCountry Championship. In March, they were state champs in the 4x800 indoor relay. Then, earlier this month, they won another state title in the 4x800 outdoor relay.

Coach Zanetti said that many of his runners have been talking about winning races, capturing titles, and setting records since they were in 7th grade. When the moment finally came to realize their ambitions, they were ready.

“A lot of these guys have been at it together for many years,” Zanetti said. “I think they build a lot of trust in each other and a lot of accountability towards each other.”

“When we’re going for these team championships, you know that everybody takes it seriously

and it’s kind of just like pushing each other to see how far we can take it,” said Charlie Dybala, one of the outdoor 4x800 state champions.

“Being on a team like this,” said cross-country champ Hudson Shaw, “gives you the skills that you’re going to need after high school because you know how to persevere through a lot of hard work that I think is unique to distance running in particular.”

The long road to the “triple crown” began at the crosscountry state championships in November, which the Saratoga crew won in a sixth-man tiebreaker. The first runner was only 25 seconds apart from the sixth, reinforcing Zanetti’s belief that his teams are filled with players who are near-equals in both talent and contribution.

“I was the third runner that day and I just thought it was really cool as a team to run in such a tight pack,” said Darren Pasek. “That day, we all were as close as we were the whole year and that’s how we won. It was all about teamwork.”

The second leg of the “triple crown” was the indoor state championships in March, where

Saratoga’s near-equal relay team had no apparent weak spots.

“We could’ve alternated or changed our order completely around and it would’ve come out to really the same result,” Zanetti said.

That strategy also worked for the outdoor relay team earlier this month when they secured the third leg of their “triple crown.”

“We had a bunch of guys who could be interchangeable that took whatever spot they were in really seriously on that given day,” Zanetti said.

When Saratoga Springs High School held its commencement ceremony on Wednesday morning, five Saratoga runners bid farewell to their teammates. Despite this loss of talent, sights are still set high for next year. On the distance running crew’s to-do list: repeating all of their state title victories, and making it to nationals.

“We definitely are coming back with a vengeance,” said Darren Pasek.

AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL GRADUATES

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Last week, the Saratoga County Medical Society awarded three scholarships to high school seniors Emily Marincic (Shenendehowa), Emma Ye (Ballston Spa), and Lillian Moore (Mechanicville).

The scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors in Saratoga County who are planning to pursue careers in healthrelated fields.

Marincic won the $1,000 Dr. Ted Gallagher Award, Ye received the $500 Carl Silverman Award, and Moore was given the $250 Honorable Mention Award.

The ceremony took place at The Wishing Well Restaurant in Wilton.
