As a “Streak”, Amy competed on the Girl’s Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse teams, loved her time as a Choralier, and immersed herself in creating art. After high school, Amy studied art and psychology at Middlebury College in Vermont, graduating in 1998. Amy played on the Women’s Varsity Soccer team for the four years she was at Middlebury.
Amy’s life was full of love and adventure. From rafting trips in Chile, climbing active volcanoes at night in Italy and
rafting multiple times down the Colorado River to running in the Klondike Road Relay Race in Alaska, Amy ‘s enthusiasm for experience and living fully was inspiring. She dedicated her life to finding beauty in the world around her and turning that passion into artwork. Most recently, her latest artwork exhibit titled “Promise” was featured in Missoula’s premier art gallery, Radius.
After college, Amy lived for five years in New York City and then moved to Missoula, Montana, where she resided until her death. While in Missoula, Amy and her partner, Dave Morris, enjoyed backcountry and cross-country skiing, off-road bike riding and trips to Moab, Utah with their dogs Moki, Osa and Juno.

BALLSTON SPA — Frederick Douglass interpreter
Nathan M. Richardson will speak about the meaning of American Democracy in the words of the former slave turned writer, orator and abolitionist.
The program will be held at the Frederick Allen Elks Lodge No 609, 69 Beekman Street in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, July 28 at 2 pm and is jointly sponsored by the Lodge and the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum.
Richardson is a published author, performance poet and Frederick Douglass Historian. Discussion with the audience will follow his presentation.
“Frederick Douglass spoke

Moving Forward with Sperry Restaurant Plans
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS —A
new application filed with the city seeks an area variance to move forward with plans that would restore Sperry’s Restaurant on Caroline Street, build residential units above the restaurant, and combine the project with a recently approved mixed-use project just to its west.
Sperry’s Restaurant operated in the Spa City for 91 years before closing in early 2023. New owner Louis Lazzinnaro told News 10 Albany earlier this year he was planning to keep the restaurant as Sperry’s with minimum interior redesigning that would match a new hotel proposed atop a lot he owns just west of the restaurant.
The lot formerly housed a two-story commercial building constructed as a tannery in the
late 1800s which was felled in the aftermath of a Thanksgiving Day 2016 blaze.
The proposal appears as New Business on the Zoning Board of Appeals agenda, with a meeting scheduled to place 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 22 at Saratoga Springs City Hall.
Saratoga Springs Discussing Processes and Procedures for Obtaining Outside Legal Counsel
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS –City officers and employees are entitled to legal defense related to claims made against them and alleged to have occurred while they were on official business.
An Article in City Code enacted by the City Council in 1987 provides for the legal defense of city officers and employees should state or federal legal action arise related to an alleged act or omission that took place in the scope of official duty or public employment.
This week the City Council began discussions aimed at potentially attempting to establish
detailed policies for the documentation and processing of future requests made by city officers and employees.
“We have been challenged to come up, as soon as possible, with a resolution to clarify our policy with regard to these issues” Saratoga Springs Mayor John Safford said this week. “We are working to come up with a resolution that will be acceptable to everyone and give us some guidance as we move into the future.”
Some of the suggested policies were posted in advance of the July 16 City Council meeting, although it was unclear how many of the council members were involved in crafting the policies suggested.
The suggested polices would
include submitting in writing to the city attorney a statement containing hourly rates proposed by the employee’s legal defense team as well as an estimate of total fees, charges and other expenses. The proposal would then be considered at a public meeting with the council charged with authorizing payment for the services to begin. A Special Public Meeting may be called if a situation requires urgency to address the matter. Should the amount exceed the estimate as the work progresses, a separate review and approval need to take place prior to those services taking place.
It is anticipated the council will return to discussion regarding the matter in future meetings.
CHANGES COMING TO CITY COUNCIL
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS —
This week, the City Council began floating potential options about how they would go about hiring an interim member to fill a vacant governing seat. With elected officials currently holding nearly half the top seats in city government that could be vacated by January, it is a process the remaining members of the council might have to revisit in short order.
The Saratoga Springs City Council is comprised of five members – the mayor and four commissioners, and two supervisors are additionally elected to represent the city of Saratoga Springs at the county level. Those seven seats are each up for vote every two years, next in November 2025.
This week, DPW Commissioner Jason Golub announced he will be stepping off the City Council next month to accept a position with the State as General Counsel for the Department of Corrections.
“It’s a really challenging role that I’m super excited for, but I will obviously miss the work that we’re doing here,” Golub said July 16 during a City Council meeting attended
by about 20 people who had made their way inside City Hall shortly after a major summer storm blew through the region.
“The people who work for DPW are amazing and have really made this job for me something special,” said Golub, adding that his new employment begins Aug. 19. “I will greatly miss the DPW employees, and they should get all the credit for everything we’ve done in Public Works the past few years.”
In 2022, Golub, a Democrat, became the first black person to serve on the Saratoga Springs City Council. He was initially selected to the seat by unanimous City Council approval shortly following the April 2022 death of longtime Commissioner of Public Works Anthony “Skip” Scirocco. That November, Golub secured victory in an election specifically held for that seat to fill the remainder of the term – through the calendar year 2023. Golub was reelected during normal council elections in November 2023 to serve through December 2025.
The Public Works Department is responsible for the repair, replacement, and maintenance of all of the public ways, streets and highways in Saratoga Springs.
In addition to leading their own respective departments, the five sitting City Council members - one mayor and four
commissioners – each have one equal vote to decide city matters under the city’s Commission Form of Government. The seats are all up for vote every two years, next in November 2025 for a position that begins January 2026.
It is unclear whether approval of an interim DPW Commissioner by the four remaining council members this year would extend for the duration of the term, which is slated through December 2025.
City Charter states: In case of a vacancy caused by other than expiration of term, the Council shall appoint a person to fill such vacancy until the end of the official year in which said vacancy occurs. If the term
of office of the officer vacating the office continues beyond the official year in which said vacancy occurs, a person shall be elected at a special election held after the occurrence of such vacancy to fill such vacancy for the remainder of the unexpired term.
In addition to Golub’s announced departure, two other Democrats - Finance Commissioner Minita Sanghvi and city Supervisor Michele Madigan – have announced their candidacy for new positions to be decided in elections held in November.
Sanghvi is running against Republican incumbent James Tedisco to represent the 44th Senate District; Madigan is
seeking to become Saratoga County Treasurer, a position which Republican Committee endorsed JoAnn Kupferman currently is seated as Acting County Treasurer.
Should either City Council member Sanghvi or City Supervisor Madigan emerge victorious in their respective election bids, their new terms would not begin until calendar year 2025. As such, it is anticipated members of the Saratoga Springs City Council would vote to fill those potential vacancies on an interim basis for the duration of the term ending December 2025 with no “special” election necessary.
Seasonal Parking Program Update: More than 11,000 Permits Issued, $80K in Revenue To Date
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS –
The newly implemented seasonal parking program, which charges non-city residents up to $2 per hour to park in city owned parking garages and lots has thus far generated approximately $82,000 in new revenue.
“We are still ramping up,”
DPW Commissioner Jason Golub said this week. “We’ve only had one week into the track season, and I hope to see revenues continue to increase.”
The installation of pay stations as part of the seasonal parking program got underway in midJune and will run through Labor Day. The pay plan is in effect in three city-owned parking garages - Walton/Woodlawn Parking Garage, Woodlawn Ave. Parking Garage, and Putnam St. Parking Garage, and three city surface parking lots – specifically located at Woodlawn Ave., Spring Street, and High Rock.
“The launch was a bit chaotic, but I don’t have an issue with it and it was bound to happen,” says Dave Barker of Impressions of Saratoga –which is celebrating its 45th year in the Spa City.
City residents, as well as
downtown businesses and their employees, are allowed to park in the pay station areas without cost, via a permitting process.
“As an employee, I don’t have to pay for parking and I appreciate they’re doing that for the employees downtown,” said Jericha Harriman, store lead at Northshire Bookstore on Broadway.
The city has issued 11, 256 parking permits – and of those are 3,300 business permits, Golub said. A total of 266 businesses have registered for permits. The Saratoga Springs Public Library has also recently gone to a paid parking plan as well regarding its 75-or-so available spaces in its lot just off Henry Street.
Not everyone is pleased with the seasonal paid parking plan.
John Nemjo, owner of Broadway’s Saratoga Outdoors - formerly Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company, and its sister store Life is Good Saratoga, has been in Saratoga Springs for more than 15 years. Nemjo was opposed to the seasonal parking plan since its conception and says he hasn’t seen anything to change his opinion.
“A lot of people in Saratoga have avoided downtown for years during track season and this is just another incentive for people to not come downtown,” says Nemjo, adding that sales are down since
June and attributing that downtick, at least in part, to the paid parking format implemented in city owned lots and garages. He also expressed displeasure with the lack of a clarity indicating that the program is operational only during the summer months.
“All people know is: there’s paid parking in Saratoga Springs. We have a year-round customer base of locals who live in Saratoga Springs and locals who live beyond the city limits, the core and the bread-and-butter of this city’s retail community. All these people in surrounding communities – they don’t get free parking passes,” Nemjo says. “We’re locally supported 12 months a year, and you’re chasing those people away.”
The City Council unanimously approved the plan in April, and the city anticipates nearly $1.6 million as first-year estimated revenue, with about $450,000 in expenses.
“We will continue to monitor the program through the summer and work with the DBA (Downtown Business Association), the City Council and residents on making sure that we understand where we’ve done a good job, and where we’ve done not such a good job and can make improvements,”
Commissioner Golub said, crediting the city’s Public Works
and Public Safety departments for getting the plan up and running in short order.
When the seasonal parking program concludes in September, the pay machines will be removed.
Residents or downtown businesses seeking a parking permit are directed to go to the city’s website – at saratoga-springs.orgor physically visit the Department of Public Works office at City Hall. Library patrons are directed to visit sspl.org to review the library’s permit process.

Saratoga Hospital Plans New “Center for Successful Aging” and Daycare Center
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Hospital wants to build a new “Center for Successful Aging” near its main campus that would function as a
one-stop shop for local seniors. The hospital presented an application for a Planned Unit Development Amendment to the Saratoga Springs City Council on Tuesday evening that would allow them to demolish an existing 10,000-square-foot, one-story building on Myrtle
Street across from the hospital’s main campus, and replace it with the new 60,000-square-foot, three-story office center.
“What I’m proposing this evening is more than an office building,” Saratoga Hospital CEO Jill VanKuren told the city council. “It’s a change in the way we do business.”
“Our community is aging. We have an influx of older people coming into Saratoga, coming into our community, and one of the things they’re looking for is fantastic healthcare,” VanKuren said. “The concept is bringing together the services that people would need to age in place under the same roof, close to the hospital, so that existing services…can be accessed more readily.”
The Center for Successful Aging would aim to address the needs of seniors with multiple medical conditions, geriatric syndromes, and social needs that are the results of aging. Seniors visiting the center would be able to have chronic and complex conditions cared for in one location. The building would include offices for primary care physicians, specialists, care coordinators, social workers, pharmacists, and dieticians.
“The ideal vision is you would come in one day with your family member, spend a few hours with us, get your appointments done, and walk out with a plan of care,” VanKuren said.
As part of its proposal before the city, the hospital is also hoping to open a daycare center for its staff members. Although there’s currently no concrete plan in place, the hospital has already had some preliminary conversations with potential partners such as the YMCA.
Because hospital workers have long shifts, work at night, and sometimes work only three days per week, it’s difficult for them to find childcare services. Creating a daycare center inside the hospital would likely help with staff recruitment and retention.
“When we do exit interviews, when people leave us, that’s one of the answers that they give, that they weren’t able
to find daycare after they’ve had their children,” VanKuren told Saratoga TODAY. “They try to come back to work after maternity leave and they have a lot of difficulty finding that infant care or finding affordable care for their toddlers and preschoolaged children.”
Both the proposed daycare center and the Center for Successful Aging are works in progress, and the hospital is actively seeking community feedback.
“We really look forward to welcoming [the community] into this conversation and truly building something that meets the needs of our community now and into the future,” VanKuren said.

Homeless… and Vulnerable
by Saratoga County Alliance to End Homelessness
Saratoga TODAY
Passing an unhoused person on the street do you ever wonder what happened in their life that led to their current circumstances? And what’s next? What goes through your mind when you see an unhoused teen or young adult? Often, they are
runaways, maybe escaping a home with abuse, or they are simply not welcome at home anymore. Sometimes they’re attending school, ‘couch-surfing’ with friends sleeping somewhere different every few days.
When a kid doesn’t have a stable place to live, they become extremely vulnerable—to the elements, to school absenteeism, to drugs/alcohol, to mental health consequences, to violence, to hunger and poor health, to criminal behavior for
survival, to trauma, and to sexual victimization.
The offer of a hot meal or a safe place to stay may seem like a gift just when everything feels like it’s going wrong. But that’s commonly the bait traffickers use to lure someone. After a couple of meals or a few nights, there’s an expectation of sexual favors as payment for their ‘generosity’. This starts a pattern of requiring sexual favors in exchange for basic life needs or requiring the youth to engage in sex acts with others. Per federal law, a commercial sex act means any sex act on account of which anything of value (including food, shelter, protection, gifts or clothing) is given to or received. If a person younger than 18 is induced to perform a commercial sex act, it is a crime
regardless of whether there is any force, fraud, or coercion.
Being homeless increases the risk of being trafficked- studies show 20-40% of homeless youth are trafficked (sometimes within 24 hours of becoming homeless). Early victimization can ensnare someone into being trafficked for years or decades. Traffickers exploit all genders with LGBTQI+ persons experiencing the highest rates of victimization.
The situation may feel hopeless but there’s help available.
“I felt trapped and didn’t know even where to start. Getting safe housing was the first step to a new life.” – Wellspring trafficking survivor SARATOGA COUNTY RESOURCES:

Leadership Saratoga Completes Nonprofit Projects, Seeks New Ideas
SARATOGA SPRINGS —
The award-winning Leadership Saratoga program recently completed four impactful projects for local nonprofits, and is currently seeking project ideas for the upcoming 2024-2025 class.
Sponsored by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, the program is dedicated to the development of leaders who will serve their communities today and in the future. As part of the program, the class assists up to four local nonprofits to help enhance or re-envision programs, operations, and strategies key to their future success.
The class of 2024 completed the following projects:
Saratoga Pride
Saratoga Pride is an allvolunteer organization that has served the LGBTQ+ community and allies for more than 15 years. Leadership Saratoga class members helped to create a strategy to expand county-wide
programs and opportunities for effective partnerships with businesses and non-profit organizations aligned with Saratoga Pride’s mission. Additionally, Leadership Saratoga helped Saratoga Pride expand its public library partnership program in Saratoga County.
Our Lodge Foundation
Our Lodge Foundation’s primary purpose is to support Frederick Allen Elks Lodge #609, a black international fraternal organization, in their philanthropic efforts, as well as the sustainment and upgrade of their building located on Beekman Street. Saratoga Sponsor a Scholar assists students from Saratoga Springs High School in graduating from high school and
attending and graduating from college or other technical higher learning programs. Leadership Saratoga helped Saratoga Sponsor-a-Scholar to re-envision and update its mentor handbook and provided additional consulting on mentor recruitment.
Lifeworks
Since 2005, LifeWorks (formerly Saratoga County EOC) has conducted an annual photography workshop and exhibit titled “Estamos Aquí” (We Are Here) and hosted an annual celebration of the photographers and new photos with the goal of providing the resources and platform for self-representation for Latinos in Saratoga. Leadership Saratoga provided research, planning, and strategy for LifeWorks for a potential expanded community showcase of Latino art and culture coinciding with the annual reception for “Estamos Aqui.”
For the upcoming 24-25 school year, nonprofits serving Saratoga County are encouraged to submit a project proposal detailing their organization’s needs. Proposals are reviewed by a subcommittee of the Leadership Saratoga Advisory Board, which selects up to four projects for groups within the incoming class to complete as part of the nine-month-long program.
Project proposal applications should be submitted to Leadership Saratoga by Friday, August 23. Organizations will be notified in early September of their status. More information about Leadership Saratoga and how to submit a project proposal is available at www. leadershipsaratoga.org.

Charlton School Announces New Hire Empire State University Launches Nursing Program
BURNT HILLS — About a month after breaking ground on a $13.8 million construction project, the Charlton School’s upgrades continue with the addition of Bo Goliber as Chief Strategy and Impact Officer.
The newly-created role was designed for Goliber’s unique expertise and skill set, and will complement her background in marketing, communications, fundraising, and development.
“Bo joining our team comes at a crucial time in our continued growth,” said Alex Capo, executive director of Charlton, in a statement. “I am confident Bo’s talents and previous experience will significantly elevate The Charlton
School’s brand and story, bolster fundraising efforts, and create community connections that will lead to enhanced opportunities for the students and families we support.”
Goliber spent ten years with the Franklin Community Center, followed by eight years as Head of Philanthropy at the healthcare marketing firm Fingerpaint. Most recently, she was Chief Development and Communications Officer at AIM Services for nearly four years.
“The mission of The Charlton School has always resonated with me, and I’m humbled to now be placed in a leadership role where I can help make a difference and bring people into the mission,” Goliber said. “The need to support the mental health of young women is more prevalent than ever, and I’m excited to help educate our community about the impactful and innovative work being done here.”
The Charlton School, located in Saratoga County, supports young women aged 12-18 who are struggling with their mental health. In June, the school broke ground on its largest redesign since 1955, which will see four new dormitories added to the campus.
— Empire State University announced last week that it is launching a nursing program through a unique partnership with Rockland Community College (RCC).
Nursing students will be able to transition from an associate degree in nursing at RCC to a bachelor of science in nursing through online coursework provided by Empire State University. Balet Flowers and Design specializes in wedding design and locally grown flowers. Their flower farm and greenhouse business provides highquality plant and flower products to customers at the market and throughout the Saratoga region.
Burger’s Market Garden produces a variety of seasonal vegetables, small fruits, and cut flowers. They also grow many bedding plants, potted plants, and container gardens and are known for their beautiful hanging plants.
Halfmoon Harvest is a husband, wife, and twobaby team that grows cut and heirloom flowers using only regenerative, no-till practices. They
specialize in distinctive fresh and dried handtied bouquets, wedding florals, special event arrangements, wreaths, pressed flower art, and hydroponic flowers in the winter.
Lovin’ Mama Farm grows 250 varieties of cut flowers on their Certified Organic farm in Upstate NY. They harvest hundreds of thousands of stems every season and sell them directly to customers at farmers’ markets in the Capital District. They also have a flower CSA and do a la carte design work for special events like weddings, anniversaries, etc. Flowers play an essential role on their farm for ecological and economic benefits. They intentionally interplant flowers between rows of vegetables to create a habitat for beneficial insects and pollinators.
Old Tavern Farm is a boutique thoroughbredbreeding farm overlooking Saratoga Lake. The owners are passionate about growing and restoring the land back to its agrarian roots. Their 60-acre farm includes livestock, a vineyard, and cut flowers, which have grown into an expanding business with floral arranging.
Scotch Ridge Berry Farm is a family farm specializing in quality fruit and berries, cut flowers, and u-cut Christmas trees. Their tables are often filled with cut flowers to enjoy throughout the season.

amazing drinks, and wonderful company. Refreshing summer cocktails are the perfect way to stay cool. Fruit cocktails are an ideal way to enjoy a summery drink. They can be styled up for non-drinkers and simplified for the kids. If your recipe needs a citrusy kick, zesting is the way to go. Plus, it’s a nice way to put the peel to good use. There is nothing quite like juicing ripe, seasonal citrus into your cocktail. Zesting, sounds like a small detail, right? You can add zesting to salads, desserts, even the rim of margaritas. If your recipe needs a citrusy kick, zesting is the way to go. Plus, it is a way to get straight to those
• 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed and chilled FOR THE CURD:
• 1½ cups sugar
• ¾ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
• 2 teaspoons lemon zest
• 1½ teaspoons cornstarch
• ½ teaspoon kosher salt
Preheat the oven to 325° and line a 9-inch square pan with parchment paper so it hangs over the edges of the pan.
In a food processor or mixer, add all the crust ingredients and pulse until a crumbly dough forms. Press the dough into the prepared pan, covering the entire surface. Bake until golden, 30 minutes. Meanwhile, make the curd:
In a small saucepan, whisk together the sugar, lemon juice and zest, cornstarch, salt, eggs and egg yolks until smooth. Add the thyme sprigs and place over medium heat.
• 2 eggs, plus 3 yolks
• 4 thyme sprigs
• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
FOR ASSEMBLY:
• Confectioners’ sugar, for garnish
• Thyme leaves, for garnish
Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain, then stir in the butter and olive oil until smooth. Immediately after removing the crust from the oven, pour the curd over the crust, spreading evenly with an offset spatula. Return to the oven and bake until set, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool completely, then refrigerate for 30 minutes. Remove the bars from the pan, using the overhanging parchment. Dust with confectioners’ sugar and garnish with thyme leaves, then cut into twelve 4½-by-1½-inch bars and serve.
rich, citrus oils of a lemon, lime, or orange directly over your drink. Using a citrus zester will allow you to cut thin, delicate ribbons of citrus that provide a bright sparkle to your drink and infuse those oils right into your drink. This zester is great because it features a curved stainless steel blade that makes zesting a quick task for any home bartender. Whether it’s a refreshing spritz, sangria, or margarita, summer cocktails are a great way to cool off. The zester allows you to make precise cuts of the shallow filaments from the aromatic, oil-filled skins of citrus fruit, and is designed to avoid the bitter white pith that lies closest to the flesh. One of our biggest selling zesters and graters are by the company Microplane. Every home cook needs a Microplane
grater. Microplane grates are an essential tool that can have fine, course, ribbon, extra course and zester blades. Each blasé is good for something different; Extra course is good for bulky ingredients like carrots or cabbage. The ribbon blade is good for cheddar cheese, while the zester is the most commonly used blade for citrus peels, ginger, garlic, and hard cheese like parmesan or romano.
Whether you’re looking to make a quick cocktail for one or a big pitcher of frozen drinks to share, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks are a perfect addition to any lazy weekend afternoon or making a summer meal, Stop by Compliments to the Chef, your Neighborhood Kitchen and Cutlery store located at 33 Railroad Place for the accoutrements’ you need for entertaining and zesting up your summer! A Nice Start (WATCH, STAND AND CHEER)
by William G. Gotimer, Jr. for Saratoga TODAY
Boosted by good weather and competitive quality racing Saratoga Race Course opened its season successfully with increases in both attendance and handle. Racing fans did not let the recent Belmont Stakes meet dampen their enthusiasm for the beginning of the longer stint. From here the racing kicks into high gear in the coming weeks with Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In races expected to draw some of the biggest names in racing.
The first four days of racing were won by a wide array of trainers and jockeys unlike previous years when top riders and trainers dominated most days. The races featured several longpriced horses and truly was reminiscent of Saratoga Meets of years gone by.
While I am not privy to concession information, it appeared to me that the crowds have largely abandoned most concession offerings at the course. Whether it be due to high prices or the move to card purchase only, or a combination thereof, the concession stands appeared devoid of traffic. For people of a certain age the “Maytag Repairman” comes to mind.
One notable change from recent years was the decision in the stewards’ stand to disqualify a winner on Sunday for herding the competition. While the runner-up was interfered with,
recent history would dictate that there would not have been a disqualification. This may portend a stricter interpretation of racing rules by the current slate of stewards.
The length of the racing day continues to be too long with most fans attending only part of the day rather than the full card. While this makes full use of the facility, it can make it seem somewhat empty by the end of the day, sometimes even for the most prestigious races. The grandstand seats appear to be half empty which of course lessons the excitement of the live event.
Consideration should be given (at least on weekdays) to shortening the time of the card to encourage and permit fans to attend each and every Saratoga race without it being an eight-hour day
Saratoga racing’s spot on the calendar typically places it in opposition to several national and international events. This year the Paris Olympics and Presidential political conventions will vie for attention just as Saratoga racing will have more television exposure than ever before. this year through its agreement with Fox TV than ever before. The ongoing efforts to have racing available on television with commentary designed for the everyday player has been a welcome evolution and one has made racing more mainstream than in prior decades. All involved should be commended for the effort and the consistent expansion of televised races on numerous outlets.
Watching races live, I sometimes feel like a dinosaur when I watch the races with my binoculars. This of course was de rigueur before large screen televisions were installed. Binoculars with a wide vision can allow you to watch the entire field from a good vantage point. However, over the years the sight lines at various race tracks have changed dramatically with more and more viewers and fans relying upon large screen televisions. The televisions allow casual fans and people uncomfortable with binoculars to follow the race as if they were watching it
at home. The downside, however, is the large screen along with the board and other objects in the infield tend to obstruct the view of watching the race live. There was a time when fans could easily see the races with their naked eyes or through binoculars. That has changed.
What has also changed sadly, and which takes away some of the excitement and the races are the fans that sit motionless in the grandstand or clubhouse seats. With the reliance now on televisions people simply sit and stare. It’s not a welcome development.
An incident between me and an unhinged patron last weekend brought this to my attention. I was criticized and cursed profusely for daring to stand up during the stretch run of the Sanford Stakes. He was irate that people would stand during a race and wished my immediate and untimely death upon me. While his profanity and threats brought the Pinkertons, it made me realize that somehow live racing has changed from a participant sport to a polite viewing, eating and drinking experience.
I would hope fans would find it in themselves to stand a few times a day when the races are run, view it live and cheer a little. Try binoculars – you may like it.
Clawing Away To A Victory
by Tony Podlaski for Saratoga TODAY
Bruce Levine pretty much started his Saratoga Race Course meet with nearly the way he ended his Belmont at Aqueduct meet.
Long-time trainer Bruce Levine wins his first Saratoga race of the meet with an impressive run from locally-bred Brown Eyed Cat
However, he had to watch some anxious moments from the start to the finish for that Saratoga victory.
Brown Eyed Cat, a 3-yearold making his debut on Opening Day, was off a step slow while getting bumped hard by Romantic Charmer as a soon as the starting gate opened. Through a patient ride from Javier Castellano, Brown Eyed Cat rallied 15½ lengths off the quick pace to run down Call Bob in the last 220 yards to win by a length.
“It was very impressive,” Levine said. “It was a
speed-favoring track and he closed a lot of ground. I know there were some fast fractions, but he did put in some run. It’s good to get that first win.”
During Belmont at Aqueduct’s closing weekend two weeks ago, Levine watched Light Man catch pacesetter Kingdom in the final furlong for the 1¼-length win.
While Brown Eyed Cat’s win came across as impressive, Levine said he wasn’t surprised in the colt’s running style. Even with the latest “bullet” workouts from the gate, Levine indicated
that his horse has the tendency to start slowly. When Brown Eyed Cat got off to a rough start and fell behind quickly, Levine didn’t know if his horse could overcome that.
“I’m not surprised,” Levine said. “He has never been a good breaker in the morning. Between not being a sharp breaker and getting bumped at the start, and he was so far back, I really couldn’t imagine him winning, especially for a first-time starter.”
After being bred by Dave Valeri with the sire of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown and the mare Cat Ferrad at Irish Hill Century Farm, just six miles away from the track in Stillwater, Brown Eyed Cat, owned by AngieV Stables, came to Levine’s barn last summer at
Belmont Park.
Even though the colt showed potential through a series of workouts, there were moments when Levine had to give him a break.
“I knew he could run,” Levine said. “We have been fighting quarter crack issues with him. That is what has slowed him in getting to the races. He’s a sound horse. It’s just his feet.”
“I wanted to give him another workout,” he added. “But I said to myself, if this race goes, I got to wait another month to run. Let me give him some experience. He acts a little green around horses. Not only that, there is now fitness on his side.”
Brown Eyed Cat wasn’t the only winner for Levine last week. He also had a winner at
Monmouth Park with Kaymus in a claiming race. Though, it’s not uncommon for Levine to run his horses at multiple tracks.
Within the first couple of years as a trainer that started in late 1979, Levine won races at Aqueduct, Belmont, the Meadowlands, Monmouth Park, Delaware Park and even Hialeah Park. This included his first graded stakes winner with I’m It followed by multiple graded stakes winner Lady Eleanor.
In 1982, even though he had been racing horses at Saratoga early in his career, Levine finally brought his stable to Barn 64, where he is still located just next to the gap of the first turn on the Oklahoma Training Track. That is when he also had his first Saratoga winner with Rob’s Lady in a maiden race.
Over the last four decades, several horses have been part of Levine’s stable, which has earned 2,238 victories from nearly 13,000 starters. They include 2008 New York-bred champion sprinter Bustin Stones, three-time Grade 3 Gallant Fox
marathon winner Coyote Lakes, John Morrissey Stakes winner Clever Electrician and Saratoga Dew Stakes winner Hot Stones.
Even with Grade 1 winner Bustin Stones and a former claiming horse like Coyote Lakes, both owned by Roddy Valente, Levine continues to look for that promising horse through breeders and sales rather than focusing on the claiming division.
“It has been good, but it’s challenging,” Levine said. “I’m still looking for a good horse. I used to work with a lot claiming horses. I don’t mind claiming, but it’s just harder. If you claim a horse $20,000 and run it for $30,000, you will probably keep it, but you can’t win. If you want to win, then you will have to lose the horse.”
“It’s hard to win a claiming race and have your horse not to get claimed out of it,” he added.
“It’s so hard to replace your horses. It takes two months to replace it. It used to be that you could hold onto them longer.”
Beyond a few claiming horses, Levine has other
promising horses who have been allowance race winners such as Light Man, Cupid’s Heart, and Fortune’s Nephew.
Levine also has younger and unraced horses. Two of them are scheduled to run in maiden races on Friday: firsttime starters Joker on Fire and Posse Rocks.
“I’m so lucky that I have some homebreds, and I can buy some yearlings and 2-year-olds to add to the stable. I am working with more 2-year-olds.” he said “Otherwise, I would be in trouble. With the babies, you can stay in business through trial and error.”
As for Brown Eyed Cat, Levine knows he some options, especially since the colt is eligible to compete in the New York Stallion Series races. However, he will know the next steps based on the horse’s health, body language, and behavior over the next couple of weeks.
“He will tell me,” Levine said. “Horses always do. He may run in an allowance race in three or four weeks. We’ll have to see where he is.”

Spa Catholic Football Returns
SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Central Catholic School announced last week that it will merge with Stillwater to create a new football program. 17 Spa Catholic students will participate in the inaugural season beginning this fall at the modified and junior varsity levels. Varsity will start in the 2025-2026 school year. Stillwater’s team is the defending Class D Sectional Champions.
LOCAL ATHLETES
EXCEL AT WORLD NINJA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ninja Labs (Saratoga & Albany) recently traveled to Greensboro, NC for the World Ninja League World Championships. The World Ninja League is the premiere obstacle league in the sport of Ninja. The event took place June 21-24th at the Greensboro Coliseum and hosted over 2300 athletes from 11 different countries and across 7 different age and skill divisions.
Much like the finals of the hit TV show American Ninja Warrior, the main event at the WNL World Championships features a 3 stage obstacle course. Athletes who clear each stage (or finish in the top percentages
of their division) move on to the next stage, but only those who clear each stage are still in contention for the World Championship title.
There is also a “World’s Strongest Ninja” title that is up for grabs during the event. In order to be crowned the World’s Strongest Ninja, athletes must do well not only on the obstacle course runs, but also perform well in the skills challenges that also take place during the Championships. A ninja’s speed, technical skills and endurance are challenged during these skills events.
Sixteen local athletes competed at Worlds and 4
finished in the Top 10 of their Divisions:
Coach Geoff Snyder finished 7th in the World in the Masters Division (40+)
Coach Nicole Van Oort finished 4th in the World’s Strongest Ninja category in the Adult Female Division.
Coach Anna Venditti finished 4th in the World and 3rd in the World’s Strongest Ninja category in the Young Adult Division (15-17).
Adelena Messier earned the title of World Champion by clearing Stage 1 and Stage 2, as well as going the furthest the fastest on Stage 3. She beat out 112 other top teen females (1314) to take the title. Adelena also finished 3rd in the World’s Strongest Ninja category.
“I’m incredibly proud of Adelena & Anna, but I’m also equally proud of all of our Ninja Lab athletes and coaches.” said head coach Geoff Snyder. “We have built a quality program that has produced some of the best ninjas in the World Ninja League. Our athletes work incredibly hard year around and it’s been amazing to see the fruits of their labor this past season.”

CELEB STOPS BY NORTHSHIRE BOOKSTORE
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAY
SARATOGA SPRINGS —
Amanda Seyfried, an actress best known for her roles in “Mean Girls,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Dear John,” stopped by the Northshire Bookstore in Saratoga Springs last week in support of novelist Liz Moore. Moore was in town promoting her latest book, “The God of the Woods.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that Seyfried would
star in a Peacock series based on “Long Bright River,” one of Moore’s novels. “Long Bright River” is a suspense thriller set in Philadelphia about a female police officer who patrols a neighborhood impacted by the opioid crisis. Moore’s latest book, “The God of the Woods,” is about a teenager who goes missing at an Adirondacks summer camp.
Seyfried lives in the Catskills with her husband, actor Thomas Sadoski.
