Colliding Dreams: Documentary History of Zionism is the Focus of SJCA’s Panel Discussion on April 28 Via Zoom
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Jewish Community Arts, supported by a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern NY and sponsored by Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, presents a panel discussion of the 2015 documentary Colliding Dreams by American filmmakers Joseph Dorman and Oren Rudavsky on April 28 at 7 pm on Zoom.
Few ideas in the modern era have had as much impact
on the world as Zionism. Colliding Dreams recounts the movement’s dramatic history, one of the most controversial and urgently relevant political ideologies of today.
“What does the future hold – what’s the solution?” SAID Phyllis Wang, Coordinator of SJCA, in a statement “We hear all the time, ‘it’s complicated.’ That perspective shows an inciteful awareness of the countless interlocking pieces in this history -- and offers
little guidance or a route to resolution.”
Colliding Dreams can be viewed free of charge on Kanopy (registration with a library card required). It can also be rented from Apple, Google Play and You Tube. The panel discussion will be held on Zoom on April 28 at 7 p.m. To register go to the SJCA Home Page www. saratogajewishculturalfestival. org.
Historical Presentation on Peter Gansevoort on April 27
LAKE GEORGE — Local Revolutionary War hero General Peter Gansevoort, who commanded Fort George at Lake George during the crucial year of 1776 and led a successful defense of Fort Stanwix in central New York the following year to help pave the way for the Continental Army’s ultimate defeat of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, will be the subject of the presentation “Peter Gansevoort: A Hero and His Legacy”, on Saturday, April 27 at the Holiday Inn Resort Lake George, beginning at 11 a.m.
The featured speaker will be historian Michael P. Barrett,
Vice President of the Board of Trustees for Albany Rural Cemetery, where General Gansevoort is buried.
The program is sponsored by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and is free to the public. Attendees are asked to register prior the event at info@ lakegeorgebattlefield.org with the number of seats needed.
A member of the Albany County militia as the American Revolution got underway, Peter Gansevoort’s Dutch family connections propelled General Philip Schuyler to commission him in the Continental Army. Gansevoort participated
in the 1775-76 invasion of Quebec prior to serving at Fort George. In 1777, he was the Colonel commanding Fort Stanwix who successfully defeated Burgoyne’s western flanking movement, greatly aiding the Continental forces’ ultimate success at the Battles of Saratoga.
For those who can’t attend on April 27, the presentation will be recorded and made available afterward on the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/@ LakeGeorgeBattlefield.

BALLSTON SPA — Susan B. Fassett (nee Thompson), age 79, of Ballston Spa, passed away on April 16, 2024, after suffering a stroke. She was born on Novem- bar 30, 1944, in Buffalo and grew up in Dansville, N.Y., before leaving her hometown to go to college at the State University at Albany. Susan was a beloved high school math teacher, beginning her career at Owen D. Young Central School and then moving to and retiring from Schuylerville Central School. She was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Susan was an avid walker. You’d find her out walking around her neighborhood, the village of Ballston Spa, the Saratoga Spa State Park, and anywhere else someone invited her to go. She rarely refused an offer to go for a walk. She was a regular at the Saratoga YMCA and was always
recruiting people to join her rowing team. She was closing in on 11,000,000 meters rowed since they started tracking. She also won her age bracket in many of our area road races. There aren’t many 5ks, 10ks, or half marathons locally that she didn’t participate in. She also completed multiple marathons. She enjoyed hiking in the Adirondacks and summited numerous mountains. At home you could find her in her flower gardens trying to keep the weeds at bay or sitting outside watching the birds on her many bird feeders. When time would allow, she fostered many kittens throughout the years from the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. She and her husband traveled extensively and saw many beautiful places and their favorite was Puerto Rico.
Susan was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Malta and the Saratoga Senior Center. Susan is survived by her daughters, Christine (Ken) Wright of Ballston Spa, and Katherine Culbert of Houston, Texas; sisters, Donna Gridley and Bonnie Wolfer of Dansville, N.Y.; grandchildren, Whitney and Nicholas Wright and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Fassett; parents, Lois and Howard Thompson; and sister, Gloria Berg. Susan will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and she will live on through
her organ donation and her anatomical gift to Albany Medical College. Her family would like to thank the nurses and medical staff at Albany Medical Center for their excellent care. A service to celebrate Susan’s life will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Malta on May 18, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology or Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park.

Saratoga Showcase on the Big Screen: PBS Documentary to Broadcast Nationally
by Thomas Dimopoulos Saratoga TODAYSARATOGA SPRINGS
— A 21st century TV episode showcasing events that occurred in 18th century Saratoga had its local screening premiere this week in a 19th century hall in Saratoga Springs.
Last September, “Travels With Darley” producer and host Darley Newman visited Saratoga County with a film crew for a busy fiveday zag through the county capturing historic locales and contemporary venues alike. The completed project, presented as a 30-minute episode of the Revolutionary Road Trips series, was showcased during a local premiere at Universal Preservation Hall April 22.
The episode highlights area historic sites like the Saratoga National Historical Park, Congress and High Rock parks and post-Saratoga battle venues in the villages of Schuylerville and Victory, among others, as well as paying visit to numerous stores, breweries, shops, eateries and hotels in and around Saratoga Springs.
“Stories of triumph and sacrifice, of compassion and betrayal that are part of a journey to create a nation,” Lauren Roberts - Saratoga County Historian and Chair of the Saratoga County 250th Commission, told the large crowd assembled at UPH to view the screening.
In the fall of 1777, two battles took place in Saratoga that resulted in the surrender of the British army and is referred to by historians as a turning point in the Revolutionary War, as it convinced France to ally with the United States and aiding in the eventual victory over the British.
The British surrender at Saratoga has been immortalized in a painting by John Trumbull that hangs in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and in 2015, the U.S.
Mint issued a “Saratoga” coin to represent New York state in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The coin depicts a close-up of the moment British Gen. John Burgoyne surrendered his sword to Gen. Horatio Gates alongside an inscription that reads: Saratoga.
“The 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga gives us a stage to tell our stories in a new way that breathes life into history,” Roberts said. The region will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the victory in a series of events leading up to, during, and after the 250th anniversary in 2027.
In 2022, Saratoga County officials unveiled the official brand “America’s Turning Point” to commemorate the anniversary of the Revolutionary War Era events that happened in Saratoga County, and the county Board of Supervisors committed $150,000 in seed money to a newly formed Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission to help advance a mission of promoting education, historic preservation and heritage tourism.
Roberts serves as chair of the 13-member Saratoga 250 commission which comes up with programming ideas and commemorations, she explained. Campaign for Saratoga 250 Inc., a separate non-profit group, is charged with locating funding and grants to support the programming.
This week’s screening at UPH saw numerous county officials, community members and business leaders in attendance. In addition to commentary provided by Roberts, introductory remarks were offered by Board of Supervisors Chairman Phil Barrett, Adirondack Trust Company President and CEO Charles Wait, Jr, and Saratoga Arms proprietor Amy Smith.
“It’s great to be here for the premiere showcase of ‘Travels with Darley’ and to be able to better share with
the general public the golden moment this is,” Congressman Paul Tonko told the audience.
“As we approach our 250th anniversary, let’s all celebrate together knowing the sense of place that we call home is indeed a powerful one - deepened by its stake in history, heritage and strategy that enabled us to be the nation we are. It created that infancy walk of a greater nation charged by its framers to always search for a more perfect union.”
While the two Battles at Saratoga and the British surrender took place in 1777
with its 250th anniversary to be celebrated in 2027, the Commission will extend to 2033, marking the anniversary of the end of the American Revolution. “After the Battles of Saratoga we still have involvement: in 1780 there was a rain on Middletown Road in the town of Ballston, and there are actually soldiers in Saratoga until the end of the war in 1783,” Roberts said.
Signature annual events include the springtime Women In War Symposium and the Siege Encampment weekend in the fall. Currently in process are educator workshops that
will provide teaching tools for K-12 students, interpretive exhibitions that will be housed separate from the battlefield, including using technology to showcase underrepresented stories in places like Schuylerville.
Travels With Darley Revolutionary Road Trip series episode featuring Saratoga is anticipated to broadcast on WMHT-TV regionally and PBS stations across the country in June. Viewers with access to on-demand video streaming apps such as Tubi may be able to currently view the episode.
Tonko Introduces Cultural Resources Challenge Act; Legislation Empowers National Park Service To Better Protect and Preserve America’s Cultural Resources
SARATOGA COUNTY
— Congressman Paul Tonko (NY-20) introduced his Cultural Resources Challenges Act, new legislation that would support and protect the nation’s cultural resources by empowering the National Park Service (NPS) to expand historic preservation efforts.
Tonko’s legislation came days after the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) released their Cultural Resources Challenge for the National Parks Service report, which called upon Congress to better support
and fund NPS to restore and protect the nation’s resources.
“Our national parks are powerful, awe-inspiring records of our rich heritage and history,” Congressman Tonko said in a statement. “Despite their vital historic and economic benefits, our cultural resources are continuously underfunded and facing dire threats through natural disasters and climate change. My Cultural Resources Challenge Act seeks to address these threats. By addressing staff shortages with the National Park Service, confronting the role of climate change, and improving
resiliency and accessibility of cultural resources, my bill will help ensure our cultural resources can continue to connect individuals and communities with the stories of our shared past and inspire future generations.”
The Cultural Resources Challenge Act of 2024 would: Require NPS to enhance cultural resources stewardship including
by addressing staff shortages, update NPS guidance on cultural resources research and engagement, advance resource preservation and interpretation, provide technical assistance, and encourage interdisciplinary work and skills sharing.
Additionally, it would direct NPS to develop curriculum to provide training to all park managers and staff,
and establish a competitive NPS grant program focused on the resiliency and accessibility of cultural resources that prioritizes projects which address the role of climate change, involve underrepresented groups in historical preservation, engage with storytelling, and empower future generations to engage in historic preservation.

Congresswoman Promotes Saratoga Flag Company
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAYGANSEVOORT —
Congresswoman Elise Stefanik promoted the Saratoga Flag Company’s Flag Advocacy Challenge in a social media post last week, calling the campaign a “great initiative.” The challenge is designed, in turn, to spread awareness about Stefanik’s Make American Flags in America Act.
“I’m always inspired by
seeing the strong patriotism and values of Upstate NY and the North Country,” Stefanik wrote in an X post. “Thank you @SaratogaFlag!”
The Saratoga Flag Company is a Gansevoort-based business known for its Americanmade flags. As part of its Flag Advocacy Challenge, it encourages people to take photos of themselves posing with an American-made U.S.A. flag.
The Make American Flags in America Act of 2023 was
introduced by Congresswoman Stefanik last year. The bill states that any American flags displayed on taxpayer-funded federal property, and any American flags purchased by the federal government, must be made in America.
Stefanik was recently named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2024. She’s also frequently cited as one of Donald Trump’s potential running mates.

Ballston Spa Teams Head to Odyssey of the Mind World Championships
BALLSTON SPA — For the first time in more than 30 years, two Ballston Spa Central School District teams are going to the Odyssey of the Mind World Championships in Ames, Iowa in May.
The teams from Malta Ave. Elementary School and Ballston Spa Middle School earned a trip to Iowa by winning secondplace trophies in their divisions at the state finals in Syracuse earlier this month.
For some of the students, ranging in age from 8 to 13, this will be their second trip to
the world finals. For others, it’ll be their third trip in only three years. In the past, students have competed against teams from Japan, France, Poland, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, and Germany.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international competitive program. Teams choose from a list of open-ended problems and solve one of them through a combination of an original theatrical sketch performance and engineering solutions using only inexpensive or recycled materials. Each team must also solve a second spontaneous problem.

Ballston Spa Music Program Receives National Award
BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District has received the NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education award. Ballston Spa is one of only 4% of public school districts across the country to receive the award in 2024.
“This national recognition serves as a credit to our faculty for ensuring outstanding opportunities in music education are available to our students throughout the district,” said Gianleo Duca, Superintendent of Schools, in a statement. “It further demonstrates how important music education is to our students, our district, and our school community.”
The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding
achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Ballston Spa answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction
time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Saratoga School District Transportation Workers Question Proposed Budget Cuts
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAYSARATOGA SPRINGS —
At an April 18 Board of Education meeting, two Saratoga Springs City School District transportation department employees questioned proposed budget cuts that could eliminate two full-time positions in their department.
Dean Musgrove, a dispatcher, expressed his concerns during a public comment period, saying that he spoke on behalf of other transportation workers.
“We’re very concerned about the situation that we’re in right now,” he said. “The cuts proposed are going to make things significantly worse.”
In a prior education board meeting on March 28, a budget presentation suggested that two full-time department positions could be eliminated: a bus mechanic and a bus dispatcher.
Musgrove said his department was “at the end of our proverbial rope” and said fellow transportation workers in the audience were there to ask for the
board’s help.
David Gonzalez, a firstshift dispatcher who works with Musgrove, said he understood that “cuts have to happen, but we are putting safety at risk with cutting a mechanic, cutting a backup dispatcher.”
“I think these decisions need to be reconsidered,” Gonzalez said. “There are other options.”
Saratoga Springs, along with many other school districts nationwide, has struggled in recent years to hire bus drivers and maintain all of its bus routes.
Spa Academy Program “Paused” for 2024-2025 School Year
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAYBALLSTON SPA — Spa Academy, a unique program that allows Ballston Spa High School students to study in a college environment and earn college credits, is being “paused” for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, according to Superintendent Gianleo Duca.
For the last three years, Hudson Valley Community College’s North campus in Malta hosted the academy. But due to its expansion and increased enrollment, the college can no longer accommodate the
program. Duca said he was notified of this in late February.
“The Spa Academy program takes up some pretty prime real estate at a really good time spot for college classes,” Duca said at an April 17 Ballston Spa Central School District Board of Education meeting. Duca said he hoped to restart the program in the Fall of 2025.
The district searched for an alternate site to house the program, but couldn’t secure one in time for the 24-25 school year.
While the district continues its search for a new site, current Spa Academy juniors will be able to finish their high school careers on the Hudson Valley campus,
where they can take both high school and college classes. Current freshmen and sophomores (about 30 students total) will come back to Ballston Spa High School until a new academy site can be secured.
“It’s an unfortunate situation,” Duca said, “but I do think we’re going to be able to relaunch Spa Academy for Fall 2025.”
Hailed as a “new and innovative high school model” upon its launch in 2021, Spa Academy students can earn a high school Regents diploma while simultaneously enrolling in courses that give them college credits.

Office for the Aging Lunch Program 5/2
THURSDAY
• 2 or 3 handfuls spinach*
• 1 large clove garlic, chopped or very thinly sliced*
•1/2 cup fresh sausage*
• 1/2 cup heavy cream
• Fine sea salt
• 2 large eggs*
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives*
• Crushed red pepper flakes
• Extra-virgin olive oil
• 3 tablespoons grated hard cheese*
INSTRUCTIONS:
Place pizza stone on the lowest shelf of your oven, then turn oven to its highest temperature (500°F). Preheat for 1 hour.
If you’re taking dough out of the fridge, give it about 15 minutes to warm up. Dust the dough ball thoroughly with flour and turn out on a lightly floured surface.
Pressing your fingers firmly into the dough, start flattening the center and work your way out toward the edge until it’s about 7 to 9 inches wide. Be careful not to disturb the outermost lip.
This will eventually become your crust. Carefully stretch dough to 14 to 16 inches without tearing it or creating a hole.
Dust your pizza peel evenly with semolina flour and transfer dough to the peel. Top with mozzarella, then spinach and garlic. Add the sausage. Top with the cream and season with salt. Transfer to the oven. Bake for 3 minutes, open oven, pull out rack, and crack the eggsinto the center of the pizza, and season them with salt and pepper. Push rack back into the oven, close the door, and finish baking.
Change the oven setting from bake to broil, cooking the pizza from the top down until the crust blisters. Keep checking for the cheese to color and the crust to turn deep brown. It may blacken in spots, and that’s okay.
Remove from oven, finish with the chives, a pinch or two of crushed red pepper flakes, a drizzle of olive oil, and the grated hard cheese.
THE TASTE OF Happiness
by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAYIt was still a bit cold out, however, I was brave with no jacket allowing the sun to keep me warm. Spring was a time when my father would have me paint fences, help him in cleaning up the lawn from the winter, and playing ball in the yard with my brothers and sisters along with a large group of neighborhood friends. Many of my childhood memories also include my fussiness in eating what my mother was making for dinner. She would often times explain why she was making a particular meal choice. Making five children and a husband happy and all agree on the meal choice would often end with her stating; “It’s because I am the mother and I said so, that is why!” Part of our meal preparation included the insistence that all five Reardon children were to wash our face and hands before dinner. My father would tag team with my mother instructing us to race to the sink. My mother’s meal creations were always delicious. During dinner there wasn’t a lot of conversation but my father would look at my mother with a very tired smile and say “you are the best”. These memories remind me of the importance of sitting down and having that meal together every night.
Have you ever walked into a place and smelled your favorite memories? Smells of cooking can trigger memories so strong and real it feels like you’ve been transported back in time and brings a picture as sharp as a photograph of
Hello my Foodie Friends!
Spring time spurs so many of my childhood memories. Maybe it is not just one memory but many that makes Spring my favorite season of the year. As a child, every Spring when the snow was melted, I would go out to the golf course by my home and run through the newly thawed grass.
a special time in your life. Through food we exchange stories of ourselves and our families. Spices were an important part of my mother’s cooking. My memories bring me back to a time when our Sunday dinners were a time of gathering around a table crowded with all of the mothers, aunts and grandmothers as they presented their cooking and discussed the ingredients and spices they used.
Spices have a way of transporting you to another place and time. Whether its memories of smelling basil or mint from the garden for the first time, or the favorite dishes that you remember cooking with them. Each spice or collection of spices has a story, and a wonderful, beautiful one at that. Spices are flavor enhancers. That might seem rather simplistic, but it really sums up how to think about spices and get the best from them. Rather than seeing these strange little bits of bark, seeds

Saratoga School District Hosting Bike Rodeo
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAYSARATOGA SPRINGS —
Hang on to your hats (or helmets), some buckin’ broncos (or bikes) are headed to town.
On May 9, at the East Side Recreation Park, the Saratoga Springs City School District is hosting a Bike Rodeo event that will include mechanics on site for minor repairs, a helmet fitting station, a bike safety station, games, a bike obstacle course, and a physical education teacher race. The district will also have its bike fleet available for those who don’t own their own bike.
Last year, said Lake Avenue Elementary physical education teacher Jake Zanetti, about 200
kids attended the rodeo. But he and the district are hoping even more will come galloping in this year.
“This has been a very big year as far as the Saratoga School District and bikes go,” Zanetti said. “We’re actually the first school district in the entire country to have a comprehensive, K-12 bike program in our schools.”
The Bikes in Schools program, launched earlier this month by Saratoga Shredders, is designed to enhance the physical education curriculum by integrating cycling into the daily activities of students across the district’s six elementary schools.
The program is one of several recent bike-related happenings in Saratoga. Last weekend, Biketoga had its first monthly
Slow Roll in Congress Park.
“We have a great biking community here,” Zanetti said.
“It’s really becoming a more and more bike-friendly community as far as adding bike lanes around the city.”
Zanetti cited the new Graphite Range Community Forest in Wilton as one of several recent examples of the area offering more trails for bikers.
“Saratoga the city is just a great place to get from point A to point B on a bike,” Zanetti said.
This year’s Bike Rodeo will take place on Thursday, May 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the East Side Recreation Park’s track and in-field off Caroline Street. The rodeo will be followed by Bike-to-School Day on Friday, May 17.
SKIDMORE SOFTBALL SWEEPS SUNY DELHI; PLAYER NAMED TO HONOR ROLL
by Jonathon Norcross Saratoga TODAYDELHI — The Skidmore College softball team walloped SUNY Delhi last week, taking both games of a two-game series on the road. The contests ended after only five innings, thanks to the mercy rule, which occurs when a team is ahead by eight or more runs after five innings of play. The dominant victories may provide a spark for the struggling Thoroughbreds.
Game One
Skidmore - 16 SUNY Delhi - 3
In the first game, four Thoroughbreds had triples and five had stolen bases. Three players had three hits: Grace O’Connell (3 RBI), Hailey Clarke (3 RBI), and Franchesca Casillas (2 RBI). Clarke, a freshman, was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and pitched all five innings, striking out four and
allowing two runs. She earned her first win of the season.
Game Two
Skidmore - 12
SUNY Delhi - 0
In a shutout victory, O’Connell went 3 for 4 with a double and a triple, driving in two runs. Outfielder Bernie Berner and catcher Jessica Nachamie also went 3 for 4. On the whole, the team had 15 hits, scoring multiple runs in three of their five innings. On the mound, freshman Mallory Allen earned the victory, giving up only one hit. Allen’s ERA for the season is now an impressive 1.43. After the pair of wins, Skidmore improved to 5-18 on the season.
Last week, O’Connell was also named to the Liberty League’s Honor Roll thanks to an eightgame hitting streak. During the previous week, she was 9 for 16 with 3 RBI, 4 stolen bases, and one dinger.

Saratoga Springs
— The Saratoga Builders Association (SBA) and Capital Region Builders & Remodelers Association (CRBRA) were thrilled to invite industry professionals, local leaders, legislators, and community members as we celebrate the launch of the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition (NCTWC) at their joint mixer.
This event took place on April 10TH at the Hilton Garden Inn in Clifton Park. The 200 attendees included professionals from diverse business segments, and special guests Saratoga Springs Mayor, John Safford; Assemblywoman, Carrie Woerner; Assemblywoman, Mary Beth Walsh; and Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, Phil Barrett showing their support for this important initiative.
Attendees enjoyed an evening filled with valuable networking opportunities, updates on the Coalition’s progress in furthering the agenda to promote careers in the trades with local schools.
“It was a great event and helped me understand the many programs this Coalition is offering students to educate them about career opportunities in the trades. Our kids need this,” expressed one attendee.
“We are excited to bring together stakeholders from across the region to celebrate the launch of the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition,” said Doug Ford, President of NCTWC. “By collaborating with local schools, leaders, and legislators, we aim to promote the trades as a viable and rewarding career option for the next generation.”
