‘Is There A Fire In You?’ A Look Into the Lives of Local Volunteer Fire Companies—Wilton

Chief Scott Bracket has actually been fortunate to see two to three volunteers joining each month.

They now have about 70 members.

The difficulty for him and the Wilton Fire Department is daytime man-power. Over the last decade,

Wilton has made a collaborative effort with Gansevoort and South Glens Falls fire departments, who have also been hurting for daytime runs and mutual aid.

Wilton currently helps cover the Northway from Jones Road up to the Hudson River and has gone as far as Broadalbin to help.

One thing Bracket has noticed is more people not being able to leave their jobs to volunteer as much. Although they can’t be fired for a fire run, employees can lose pay, during the time they are out to help the fire department. That shortage in daytime numbers has caused Wilton to have to wait longer than they would like to get a truck off the floor.

Some people give up on their dreams when they are knocked off their feet by the crushing blow of the word “No.” Some people get defeated and are afraid to try again.

Terry Bedard is not one of those people.

After being rejected from nursing school fresh out of high school, Bedard instead got married and had children, spending her 20s focusing on being a wife and mother. But by the time her kids were in middle school, her lifelong dream of See Nurse pg. 6

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Two men were arrested Friday morning for a number of car break-ins and burglaries on the east side of town.

Miles Hawes, 22, of 4th Street, Watervliet and Daniel Clow, 23, of Simon Lane, Latham are accused of breaking into over 75 vehicles in a 10 block area covering Lake Avenue south to Fifth Avenue, and East Avenue to the Northway overpass.

According to the SSPD, they responded at 4:12 a.m. Friday morning to Patricia Lane for a report of a suspicious vehicle and that two white males were seen leaving the car and walking through the neighborhood. Officers responded to the area but upon arrival found the suspicious vehicle and the men had left the area, but continued to search.

At 5 a.m., a call from Elizabeth Lane for a similar report of a suspicious vehicle and a few minutes later stopped a vehicle on Henning Road just before Union Avenue.

The vehicle fit the description of the

suspicious vehicle and there were two white males in it and the officer quickly realized that they were the subjects in question from the Patricia Lane call. He also noticed items in the vehicle that looked suspicious in nature and probed the subjects a little more.

Hawes and Clows were arrested and the vehicle in question was impounded and items were secured that are associated to the burglary and larcenies. The police department is asking for anyone who may have been a victim of a burglary or larceny from a vehicle during the night, in the above mentioned area, to contact the police department at (518) 584-1800.

Hawes and Clow were charged with third degree burglary, fourth degree grand larceny for a theft exceeding $1,000, fourth degree grand larceny for the theft of a credit card, criminal tampering and petit larceny. They were jailed pending arraignment.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City Council voted July 2 to transfer two properties it acquired through tax foreclosures to Habitat for Humanity, which will use the lots to build affordable homes for first-time buyers.

The lots that were approved to be transferred are 26 Cherry St. and 195 Division St, which were part of 30 lots the city took over last year due to owners defaulting on their taxes. The two new homes will be built for families who earn between $30,800 to $46,200 with the help of the Saratoga Builders Association and Rebuilding Together Saratoga County.

The Habitat for Humanity

projects will come at no cost to the city, which has recovered all back taxes on the foreclosed properties.

The City Council is expected to finalize a contract with Habitat for Humanity on July 16. Construction could start in the late summer and end next spring. The nonprofit organization will organize the building projects.

Builders will construct a singlefamily home on the vacant Division Street lot. A run-down structure on the Cherry Street property will come down to make space for what could be a duplex.

Habitat for Humanity will select owners for the homes through an application process.

Lance Leonard Sentenced to Probation and Time Served in Skidmore Case BALLSTON SPA — Lance Leonard, 49, whose threats to murder a Skidmore student and commit suicide shut down Skidmore College for hours in March while police searched for him, was sentenced July 8 in Saratoga County Court to probation and time served.

Skidmore was locked down for several hours during the night of March 5 after Leonard called a student’s father, telling him he was going to kill the man’s daughter and then kill himself.

Massachusetts police were able to trace Leonard’s cell phone to a bus, leading to the lockdown of the Skidmore campus and Saratoga police searching all buses entering

the city. The bus Leonard was on ultimately stopped in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Following his arrest in March, Leonard served about 60 days in Saratoga County Jail before being released on bail. He has been in an in-patient psychiatric facility on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he will continue to be a client for an unknown length of time.

He pleaded guilty in May to firstdegree coercion, a felony and the highest charge against him. In court on July 8 he also signed an order to have no contact with the victim for eight years. If he strays from the probation requirements to which he was sentenced Monday, he could face up to seven years in prison.

Josephine (Lauricella) Fusto Saratoga Springs — Josephine (Lauricella) Fusto, 86, of Christina Court, passed away Sunday, July 7 at her residence.

Born on November 18, 1926 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Gennifer Arcardo Lauricella.

Josephine was a loving and devoted wife and sister. She was a kind and generous aunt and was considered a second mother to her niece and nephew.

In addition to her parents, Josephine was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Sam Fusto.

Survivors include her brother

Benjamin Lauricella, her nephew Daniel Lauricella and niece Daneen Neison; great nieces and nephews, Natasha, Daniel, Jayna and Kristen and her sister-in-law, Helen Garcia of Florida.

Relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, July 12 at Our Lady’s Chapel in the parish center of St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, 231 Lake Avenue, followed by a funeral service at noon in the Chapel.

Entombment will follow in Memory Gardens, Colonie.

MALTA — Christine E. Reilly, 63, of Nelson Ave. Ext. died on Wednesday, June 26 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Born on January 7, 1950 in Cohoes, she was the daughter of Leonard Charette and Eileen LaPlant.

Christine worked for New York State in various roles. Most prevalent was her time with the New York State Veterans Affairs in Albany.

In her leisure, she enjoyed to go camping with her family. She also enjoyed knitting, and playing card games. Her greatest love and

William Farr SARATOGA SPRINGS — William Farr, 65, formerly of Wilton Commons and Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa, died Thursday, June 20 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on March 26, 1948 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of Richard T. Wait and Marie Wait.

Upon his graduation from Saratoga Springs High School, William joined the United States Marine Corp. and proudly served his country from 1968 to 1970.

Upon his return to the Saratoga Springs area, he worked for McNeary Distribution at first in the office and later as a delivery driver. He later worked at Minogue’s Beverage and several other employers such as Kmart and Wal-Mart.

He was a member of the Green Sabre’s and a Boy Scout leader in Saratoga Springs. In his leisure, Bill enjoyed making floral arrangements and enjoying the local wildlife and nature.

Survivors include his mother Marie and his father Richard, a brother Thomas Farr of Saratoga Springs, two sisters Katherine Clark and her husband Randy of Wilton, and Darlene Pearsall and her husband Robert of Saratoga Springs, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

June Marie Jolicoeur Malta — June Marie Jolicoeur, 82, of Malta Gardens died Tuesday, June 18 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on April 29 in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Charles Kenneth Lenz, and Madelene Virginia DuRose.

June was a nurses’ aid employed by the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs for over seven years.

Mrs. Jolicoeur was predeceased by her parents, a sister Doris Ann Paine and her husband of 25 years George W. Mabb and also her second husband Joseph J. Jolicoeur.

She is survived by two sisters, Nancy L. Birchfield and her husband Fred of Opelika, Alabama and Virginia L. Marvotich of Edgewater, Florida, a brother in-law Henry Jolicoeur and his wife Annie of Clifton Park, a sister in-law Florence Marion of Florida, two nieces, Stephanie Moore of Tullahoma, Tennessee and Pamela Moury of Fort Worth, Texas and a nephew, Jay Birchfield of West Point, Georgia and a very special friend Joyce Speanburg of Mechanicville.

Her burial will be at 11 a.m. on July 16 at the Maplewood

Cemetery in Wilton. Memorial donations can be made in June’s memory to The Humane Society.

Rosemary D. Miller EAST GREENBUSH — Rosemary D. Miller, 85, of East Greenbush, passed away Saturday, July 6 in the company of her family.

Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Frank DeSanto and late Mary Luppino Ashley. Rosemary was a 1945 graduate of Philip Schuyler High School and later in life worked as a veritype operator for the NYS Department of Health from which she retired in 1983. She was an active woman who enjoyed bowling and golf, and played in many leagues over the years. Her

friendships were many, and they lasted a lifetime.

Rosemary was predeceased by her husband, Edward Miller, and son, Rev. Kenneth R. Miller.

She is survived by her son, Stephen E. Miller of Wilton and her niece, Jacqueline DeVito of Northville. She is also survived by dear friends Franklyn Dillon and Teresa Simmons of East Greenbush. Rosemary was most recently a resident at the Schuyler Ridge Residential Health Care facility in Clifton Park, where she enjoyed her new friends and participating in many activities.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Edward S. Saxton, 90, passed away July 1 at home with his loving wife Sandra Shoemaker Saxton at his side.

Edward was born April 26, 1923 in Jersey City, New Jersey.

He was the son of the late Lester and Henrietta Barth Saxton.

He lived in various places in New Jersey and attended Jersey City High School, leaving at 16 to join the U.S. Marines. He served his country from 1939 to 1948 in China, Cuba, Guadal Canal and finally on Islands in the South Pacific during World War II. He was wounded and received two purple hearts. After the War he attended Cornell University where he received a Masters degree in Labor Management.

Returning to New York City, he worked in the printing industry,

finally becoming the owner/ operator of Program Printing, which did all the programs and other printed material for the New York Racing Association.

He worked in this field for 32 years. He was an excellent handicapper and after retirement continued to pursue his interest in the horses.

Edward is survived by his wife, Sandra and two daughters, Valerie Rothschild (Stephen) and Maria Saxton. He also leaves behind three grandchildren Kim DeFrances (Michael), Stephen Rothschild (Meredith), Matthew Rothschild (Jackie) and four great-grandchildren, Michael DeFrances, Matthew DeFrances, Abbey Rothschild and Jack Rothschild.

A memorial service will be held for Edward Saturday, July 13

at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church UCC Church at 24 Circular Street, Saratoga Springs.

Local Woman Achieves Lifelong Nursing Goal continued from page 1 becoming a nurse still sat quietly in the back of her mind.

Determined to make her dream a reality, Bedard applied to Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing and was accepted in an associate’s program, the first step on her way to become a registered nurse.

“As my kids were doing cheerleading and baseball and soccer, I would be sitting with my little flashcards out,” Bedard remembered.

“I’d be studying and watching and say, ‘Yay, good goal!’ and then have to go back to my cards.”

With the help of family and friends, Bedard was able to complete her RN degree by age 33 in 1991. She began her career as a nurse at Samaritan Hospital, then became a nurse manager at the former CHP Community Care and the Bone and Joint Center in Albany before heading to Saratoga Hospital 11 years ago, where Bedard now works as the Director of Same Day Surgery and Endoscopy. She currently heads three departments and

oversees 65 employees.

Though she had successfully fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a certified nurse years ago, Bedard wasn’t finished learning. With monetary help and support of her mentors at Saratoga Hospital, Bedard continued her higher education to complete her bachelor’s degree before more recently earning her Master of Science in Nursing and Systems Management, an accomplishment that will be recognized when she walks the stage at her graduation today.

“I’m just so proud of myself because I was committed to higher education and lifelong learning,” Bedard said. “I know my family is very proud of me and they’ll all be there, and to share that with them is important so I’m very excited.”

Bedard said that though she made it to the finish line, there were plenty of challenges to overcome along the way, including raising her children, working full-time at the hospital and completing her

schoolwork through distance learning classes.

“I can remember one time it was 11 p.m. and I was finishing a paper and I looked up, and I didn’t have it saved, and the power went down,” Bedard remembered with a laugh. “And I remember I cried, and I was like, ‘I don’t think I can do this anymore,’ and everybody has that moment.”

But there were even bigger challenges Bedard had to face than lost papers.

“At one point my mother had cancer, and she ended up passing away,” Bedard said. “So I did take a year off while she was going through that with the family. There are times when you have to defer [school] again and then you go back on, but it was important enough for me to want to finish because it was something that I had always wanted to do.”

Bedard attributed much of her success to her family members, coworkers and mentors at the hospital.

“I never would have made it

through without them,” Bedard admitted. “My family and friends would watch my kids while I ran to clinicals and that type of thing. I don’t think any mature adult can get through without any support from family and friends.”

The resources that Saratoga Hospital was able to provide were also an immense help, Bedard said.

“They promote lifelong learning so much here at Saratoga Hospital—I can’t talk about that enough,” Bedard said. “Our facility here offers monetary and coaching support and guidance, so I’ve been here 11 years and have been in school 11 years.”

Continuing, Bedard said she is excited to finally be able to focus more on her family again.

“I’m 57 years old but I never would have made it through without everybody—my husband, my kids, my grandchildren,” she said.

“They would always say, ‘Memaw, do you have another paper to write?’ So my papers are done and it’s time that I can start enjoying

my grandkids a little more. I’m very excited to be completing this and walking across the stage.”

Not only will her new degree open up many more doors of opportunity for her, but Bedard said she has been given the chance to lead by example and to be a role model to others pursuing their higher education.

“I think in some way I have helped [my employees]—they see me in school and now I have quite a few members of my staff that have gone back to school for their Bachelors or Masters, so I’ve been able to guide and coach them along the way too,” Bedard said. “So I think I lead by example and I’m able to help them.”

Bedard added that though it’s a long journey, she would advise anyone thinking about going back to school to give it a try.

“Never say never,” Bedard said.

“I have staff going back to school in their ’50s—just give it a try. You never know! If I can do it, anybody can do it. It’s never too late.”

New Supervisor Selected for Saratoga County BALLSTON SPA — After a long and harrowing process of selecting a candidate for the position of Saratoga County Animal Shelter supervisor, The Saratoga County committee that oversees personnel matters voted July 8

to appoint 48-year-old Deborah Oligny as the new supervisor of the shelter.

Unlike the committee’s previous endorsement, 22-year-old Christina Abele, Oligny is likely to get the full Board of Supervisors’

seal of approval.

The public stormed the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors meeting in March after learning that county officials were attempting to appoint recent college graduate Abele to the $62,800 salary position. After hours of complaints by county residents, the full county Board of Supervisors rejected the proposal in a 13-10 vote. Many citizens

were outraged over Abele’s lack of supervisory experience and concerns that she was picked over others because of political connections—her father, a partner in Abele Builders of Halfmoon, is a major donor to the Republican Party in Saratoga County and has donated thousands to Supervisor Wormuth and other candidates over the past several years.

Oligny applied for the

position the first time around but was not selected for an interview.

This time, she was one of eight candidates interviewed for the position.

Oligny, who has a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Cornell University and has been working in the field of animal science for 30 years, in addition to running her own business, North Country Critter Sitters. If she is approved by the county Board of Supervisors at its monthly meeting July 16, Oligny will start the new job August 2.

The six-member committee spent time in executive session with Oligny before publicly voting on her appointment July 8.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Our next Saratoga County Sheriff needs to contain a growing drug problem, arrest drug dealers and educate our youth on the dangers of drug usage.

I believe that Jeff Gildersleeve is the most qualified and experienced candidate running in the Republican Primary for Saratoga County Sheriff. Mr. Gildersleeve has expansive qualifications with significant law enforcement experience to make sure that Saratoga County is a safe place to live. His work to keep drugs out of our communities is of particular importance.

Mr. Gildersleeve served in the New York State Police and led the D.E.A. Drug Task Force in the Capital Region to keep drugs out of our communities. Recognizing his expertise in arresting drug dealers

and distributors, and after retiring from the State Police, he was hired by the Warren County Sheriff ‘s Department to establish and run a drug unit.

Mr. Gildersleeve has volunteered in our local schools and given presentations to students on the dangers of drugs, how to resist peer pressure and how to help friends who are under the influence of drugs.

I’ll be supporting Jeff Gildersleeve in the Republican Primary this September 10th because he’s arrested thousands of criminals and kept dangerous drugs out of our community and I believe that he will do even more as the Saratoga County Sheriff.

Everything’s Coming up Roses

by Trina Lucas Saratoga TODAY More than 700 patrons and volunteers braved the heat last Sunday, July 7, to participate in the 19th Annual Secret Gardens Tour. Presented by Soroptomist International of Saratoga County, the event featured 11 private and unique gardens in and around Saratoga Springs, including Yaddo, Balet Flowers and Design, and the entrance to Saratoga Spa State Park.

The self-guided tour encouraged ticketed attendees to visit the locations in any order. At Balet, Soroptomist member Mary Huber welcomed those looking for ideas to grow bird and butterfly native gardens. Fittingly, she shaded herself from the high, hot sun under an umbrella sprinkled with the winged creatures. Barbara McGrath and Dorothy Kelliher were seen among the perennials and flowering shrubs, as were Gretchen Ruhl, Carol VanLuyk and Cammie Clancy.

Down the road at Saratoga Farms, homeowner Donna Redgrave stayed cool by the pool with her friend, rose garden designer Joanne Strevy. While the large property blossoms with countless flowers like English roses, peonies, hydrangea, spirea and lilies, the focal point of Redgrave’s

yard is the stone labyrinth she built as a memorial to her son, Michael.

A classic seven-circuit design, the circular paths lead to the center but not in a spiral design. Redgrave took liberties, adding a heart shape in the middle of the ‘turnings’ and a large center rock that provides the perfect spot for quiet reflection. The labyrinth inspires peace, and despite the afternoon warmth, visitors paused in awe, struck by the extraordinary work of love and grief. John and Mary Ellen Ward took extra time circling the paths and volunteer Nancy Powhida remarked that it was a special place to spend the afternoon.

Back in town, Soroptomist volunteer Kelly Armer greeted tourgoers at 176 Nelson Avenue, the home of Jerry and Lu Lucas. The couple has nurtured their side and front lawns for 14 years, choosing big blue and elephant ear hostas, ferns, Solomon’s seal and Lily of the Valley to complement the 1860s house. All agreed, however, that the century-old grape arbor is the yard’s highlight.

Fearing they’d destroyed the grapevines when they moved it not once, but twice, the Lucas’ replaced them with climbing lacecap hydrangea and clematis. It is breathtaking and did not disappoint attendees Dan and Jan Hazewski, Debbie Shea, Melodye Eldeen, Rena Smith, Maureen and George Foster, Emily Long and Ronnie Lenis.

Tracy Savage and Jeremy Jones opened their backyard garden at 158 Phila Street. When the two purchased their 1870s home six years ago, it was divided into four apartments with spotty grass in the backyard. Needless to say, it didn’t

survive the major remodeling project that converted the house back to a striking single-family home. In its place, Savage and Jones created an oasis blending her southern love of cherry trees, lilies, reudbeckia and geraniums, with his hardy Saratoga roots in delphinium and alchemilla. The center is a stone cherub that once graced Savage’s grandmother’s house in Virginia.

“I played ring-around-therosie with that statute when I was five years old,” she recalls.

Javier’s: Casual and Fine Dining, Latin Style

by Patricia Older Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — When Javier Rodriguez came to New York City from Costa Rica, he had no idea the experience would forever change his life. He was barely 19 when he flew into the Big Apple to visit his older brother.

It was 1997 and he liked what he saw. Javier began bussing tables in an innovative Neuvo Latino restaurant where his brother was a waiter.

Within two years, he had moved up the ladder to bar manager.

But life was about to get serious for Javier. Recognizing his talent in the food service industry, Javier started working for one of New York City’s finest dining establishments—The River Café, located under the Brooklyn Bridge and overlooking Manhattan.

“I was young and having fun,

but my job at the River Café made me realize I needed to be serious about my future. I realized this was my life,” said Javier.

And focus he did. He soon became a maître de, the youngest in New York’s history and in 2012, was chosen over hundreds of others by the largest and best hotels in

the City as Maître De Manager of the Year.

“I am the only Latino ever chosen and the only one under 50,” said Javier.

Over the 12 years he spent at the River Café, Javier received his citizenship, got married, and had children. The young family soon

decided to buy a home in Saratoga County since his wife is from Colonie.

“We bought a home in Clifton Park, but I kept an apartment in New York City because of my work,” he explained.

Then Hurricane Sandy struck, devastating New Jersey and

Manhattan. Javier was out of a job, so he returned to his home in Clifton Park and began exploring his options.

While doing a fundraiser at Yono’s in Albany for the Red Cross, Javier met Brian Bowden, an upand-coming chef. Bowden’s career has taken him on a path that would mesh perfectly with Javier’s—working in a kitchen since he was a young teen, Bowden eventually took on the role as Chef De Cuisine on the island of St. Martin to explore Latin and Caribbean flavors. Before that, he had led the kitchen at Saratoga Restaurant in the Simpson Bay Yacht Club. That was also where Bowden perfected his knowledge of fresh fish and seafood. Both men were looking to move their careers forward.

“We hit it off and really got along,” explained Javier. ”He’s very talented and his food is superior to any restaurant in Manhattan, so we started working on a plan to open a place.”

Working with a broker, Javier looked to the Spa City where he could open a Neuvo Latin cuisine restaurant.

“Saratoga Springs’ culture is much like Manhattan,” said Javier.

“I wanted to be where people would appreciate fine dining.”

That is when he found out the former Metro building was up for lease.

“When I saw the second floor, I immediately fell in love with the place,” said Javier.

Javier said he is excited about the future of the restaurant, which uses the three-level former Metro building in innovative and exciting ways.

“It is a totally different environment [than the former Metro],” explained Javier, noting that he had utilized the layout of the space to give a dining experience for just about anyone. “The first floor of the restaurant is casual, upstairs is more formal and the patio is for fun.”

The menu of Javier’s features a variety of old Latin favorites from the casual fun foods such as tacos and burritos, to the elegant, fine dining experience.

“They can come in to the first floor and have casual foods, but if you want a nice, romantic dinner, we have the second floor for that—it is very formal—chandeliers, flowers, there is even different music for each level.”

The patio, he pointed out, is a second-floor level experience and features a clear, see-through canopy.

Bread Basket Bakery Takes Over Operation of Library Café

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new café will be operating in the library. The Bread Basket Bakery took over operation of the café that is located inside the Saratoga Springs Public Library on July 1. It will have that space until at least December. The bakery, which serves a full menu of baked goods and lunch items at its location on Spring Street, will serve a pareddown version of its menu in the library location, focusing on its signature potpies and quiches, along with baked goods and coffee.

The Higher Grounds Cafè, operated by Kimberlie De Silva, closed up shop on June 22.

“For close to 10 years, Kimberlie has provided an excellent service that has enhanced the

library-going experience,” said Library Director Issac Pulver. “And we will miss seeing her each day.”

DeSilva’s announcement of her intention to depart prompted library officials to examine space allocations, and plan for an additional phase of remodeling that will expand the popular Teen Room and the Book Bag Shop, the used book store operated by the Friends of the Saratoga Springs Public Library, and will relocate the café in order to possibly take advantage of some outdoor seating opportunities. The remodeling work is tentatively scheduled to begin in January of 2014.

“We anticipated that Higher Grounds Cafè would operate until work began on the new Teen

Center in January,” said Pulver.

“Kimberlie’s decision to close earlier than that prompted a bit of scramble to find a new partner to operate the café between July and December, so that there would be relatively little disruption in service.

We’re very pleased to welcome the Bread Basket Bakery to the Library.”

“The library is a very special place for many people in Saratoga Springs,” said Matthew Tallman owner of the Bread Basket Bakery.

“We are excited to become a part of this great service and hope to add to the already wonderful library experience.” Tallman plans to expand the library menu to include homemade soups and sandwiches made on their fresh breads, as well as healthy snacks for children.

SaraBella Pizza Opening Second Location in Malta SARATOGA SPRINGS — SaraBella Pizza is opening a second location at 128 Dunning Street in Malta. The flagship store at 391 Sand Creek Road in Colonie continues to deliver their special brand of pizza and Italian homemade goods in the Capital District.

Owners Domenic and Lisa Fuda are actually returning to the area.

“Dom started out in the pizza business here in Malta as a co-owner of Double D’s Pizza 16 years ago,” said Lisa. “Dom decided to branch out on his own with SaraBella in Colonie right before we got married and the two of us built the pizzeria together and have been very successful with it. When the opportunity came up to take over full ownership of Double D’s Pizza in Malta and turn it into SaraBella Pizza, we took it.”

Domenic is thrilled to bring his successful brick-oven pizza to

Saratoga County.

“We’ve been in Colonie for nearly three years and it’s been really fantastic serving the neighborhood our homemade pizza, dinners and sandwiches. I’m really excited to come back to Malta to serve up our authentic Italian SaraBella food to the folks in Saratoga County. The brick-ovens have been installed and are ready to go,” he noted.

The Fudas have completely renovated the old Double D’s Pizza to create SaraBella Pizza. SaraBella is a family-owned and operated full-scale pizzeria offering brick-oven pizza, specialty pies and the most authentic Brooklyn-style Sicilian pizza available north of New York City.

HRCCU Scholarship Awards CORINTH — Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) awarded each of the following students a scholarship through their 2013 College Scholarship and Making Life Better Scholarship contests.

The following student members have received a $1,000 scholarship: Jenna Akerley, Corinth Central School; Andrea Brenner, Shenendehowa High School; James Campbell, Saratoga Springs High School; and Rebecca Sheely, Schuylerville High School.

Allison Cirenza, Saratoga Springs High School and Lauren Bolz, Queensbury High School have each received a $500 scholarship.

Cynthia Cappello, South Glens Falls High School, was awarded $1,000 for the Making Life Better Scholarship.

Eligible candidates were required to be high school seniors planning to attend an accredited college or university in the fall of 2013 and be HRCCU membersin-good-standing. For the College

Scholarship, applicants were judged on their academic performance, extracurricular and community activities, honors and awards, employment experience, length of HRCCU membership and essay question. For the Making Life Better Scholarship, members were judged on their community service involvement and essay question.

“We had a tremendous response and these seven winning students show exemplary accomplishments in and out of the classroom,” said Susan Commanda, Chief Executive Officer. “HRCCU is proud to provide scholarships for these very deserving young adults and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”

The HRCCU College Scholarship Program began in 1994 to promote and foster the educational endeavors of the Credit Union’s young members. To date, 71 area students have benefitted from HRCCUs College Scholarship Program with awards totaling $57,500.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Turner Construction executive Peter D’Aloia is joining the team at Bonacio Construction Inc. as director of operations. He will begin on August 2.

In his role as director of operations, Peter will oversee the day to day activities of the Bonacio Construction and Project Management teams. Peter will focus on a wide range of areas including contract negotiation, scheduling and fiscal oversight of jobsites, as well as overall project controls, forecasting and business development.

“We’re excited to bring Pete on board here at Bonacio as we continue to expand into larger and more regional commercial work. Pete comes to us with almost 20 years of solid industry experience and really strong relationships within our community,” said Larry Novik, director of business development at Bonacio. “We’ve all known Pete for many years and are certain he’s going to be a great addition to our leadership team.”

D’Aloia has been with Turner Construction Company for almost

20 years, gaining experience from projects such as the USTA Tennis Facility in Queens, Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at RPI, Colonie Center Expansion, and GlobalFoundries in Malta.

Samascott Appointed to the Board of Saratoga Builders Association, Inc. SARATOGA SPRINGS — Wayne Samascott of Malta has been appointed to the 12-member Board of Directors for the Saratoga Builders Association Inc. Samascott is vice-president of Malta Development Co., Inc. and has been educated and certified by the largest organization in the home building industry, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). He also holds the designation of Certified Green Professional.

Samascott has been involved on Malta Development construction sites from a very young age.

Under the mentorship of his father Tom, Samascott has had the unique

opportunity to learn the business from the ground up, literally.

Wayne is “hands on” as the Malta Development Construction superintendent. As such, he is involved in the daily supervision of every home, working with sub-contractors and suppliers to ensure that each home meets the highest standards of quality and is delivered in a timely manner.

Celebrating the 172nd Saratoga County Fair BALLSTON SPA — Get ready for some fun at the Saratoga County Fair. This year the Fair is bringing back some of the tried and true acts, events and rides, but they are also adding lots of new and exciting things.

Susan Farnsworth, media relations coordinator, said that there were some acts that had not been seen in a while that were being brought back, as well as some new and exciting ones.

“Hypnotist acts have a long history at the Saratoga County Fair, and after a few years without, we are happy to announce that the hypnotist Brad Matchett, will be appearing nightly after the talent shows in the Talent Pavilion,” said Farnsworth. “Then we will be featuring the all new Alaskan Grizzly Experience, featuring live Alaskan Grizzly Bears [who] will be doing four shows daily in Grandstand Meadow. The Alaskan Grizzly Experience joins Rosaries’ Racing Pigs, the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, Masters of the Chainsaw’s Brian Ruth and all the other great acts and exhibits covering the 30-acre Fairgrounds.”

In addition, there will be the new Adirondack Ranger Cabin

display in the conservation area, built by volunteers with materials donated by the Saratoga Tree Nursery and Kilmer Lumber Company from Middle Grove.

“We initiated live music in the daytime last year, and it returns again in 2013 with Seth & the Moody Melix and John & Orion Kribs playing in the Conservation area this year, and Markellis, Haskell, & Maul playing on the D&H Caboose Stage,” added Farnsworth. “In addition this year, there will be two afternoons of classic country music in the Live Music Pavilion by the Spurs USA.” She noted that the rides section of the Fair, featuring Amusements of America, will be running 39 rides, the most rides ever at the fairgrounds and featuring 21st Century LED light shows and rides like the Flying Bobs, Pharaoh’s Fury, Vertigo, Zero Gravity and Cliff Hanger.

As for food and beverage vendors, Farnsworth said new wine selections would be available this year.

“The addition of a second varietal flavor to the Saratoga County Fair wine selections, custom made

by Ledge Rock Hill Winery here in Saratoga County, [will be featured,” said Farnsworth . “Saratoga County Fair ‘Judges Stand Lager’ will also be returning, brewed for us by Olde Saratoga Brewing.”

Continuing, she said that the Tom Clements Family Pavilion will be more active than in recent years with the return of daily shows by the Agricadabra Magic Show, who will be sharing the building with Matt Baker the Comedian/Juggler. TCFP will also host the annual pie eating contests, donut eating contests and the all new Lego Competition.

Eliminator, the number one touring ZZ Top Tribute act in the USA will open the Fair Tuesday night.

“This Kansas City based act is the ultimate way to get you in shape to welcome the real thing to SPAC later this summer,” continued Farnsworth.

Every full price admission receives Gate Premiums Tuesday through Thursday; Wednesday is Seniors Day, with discount admissio and a free lunch and Glenn Miller Tribute Show.

Bracket said. “This day in age for some reason they don’t allow it.

It’s unfortunate. You start going to four or five calls during the week and they’re not going to pay you, that affects your home life, paying your bills and taking care of your families. I’d like to see employers be lenient with volunteers. I understand that they’re running a business but sometimes you have to be lenient because overall we’re here to help the public and help people in the community. I’d like to see, for municipalities, that you let your people go because the taxpayers are already paying you.

So what’s the difference whether you’re here doing your job or you’re putting out a house fire at a taxpayer’s house.”

In the last eight or nine years there has also been an increased presence of women in the firehouse.

“A lot of women are home,” Bracket said. “If the kids are off at school, they’re available during the day. Some are very aggressive firefighters. They’re here all the time.

They like to learn. They’re not afraid of throwing an air pack on their back and going into a burning building.”

Wilton is currently ahead in calls, with about 200 for the year. They usually get 300 to 350 annually. In May there were 46

emergency responses, the most this year so far.

A new sub-station added on Route 50 last year in May has also helped get more members and provide better response times for that end of town. The station has three trucks on location.

Wilton also offers an Explorers Post program, which is run through the Boy Scouts. The program gives kids the necessary tools to join at the age of 14.

“They have limitations as to where they can’t run certain tools and climb ladders and stuff like that, but they can drag hose and they can help,” Bracket said.

When they turn 16, teenagers are eligible for firefighter status, which allows them to take the state fire training schooling. All the necessary certifications and schooling can be obtained before turning 18 years old.

“Once they turn 18, we run them through a live burn down at the training center and they’re Class A qualified,” Bracket said. “They can wear an air pack and fight fires with the approval of all the chiefs.”

For people who may have a negative perception toward the fire department, Bracket has one message.

“Come over and see what we’re all about.”

To join, hopeful members need to fill out an application before an investigation committee will find out why he, or she, is interested. After that, starting on the first Monday of the month, membership will table the prospective individual for 30 days.

During that time, there are arson background checks and an encouragement to have people come by Tuesday nights to see drill in-house training. Following the 30 days there is a six-month trial membership where Fire Fighter One, an 87-hour course, or Scene Support must be completed. Without Fire Fighter One, an individual will not get an air pack, or be allowed to go inside a burning building.

There are also strict rules enforced at the stations once someone is on board, including no alcohol allowed.

“We have strict rules against it,” Bracket said. “If you want to go home and have a couple beers, then you stay home. You’re out of service for a minimum of eight hours.

We’re very strict about that.”

Being with Wilton since 1999 and joining the fire service in 1987, Bracket still says it’s a job that always keeps him on his toes.

“It gives me satisfaction helping people,” Bracket said. “It’s fun and exciting. It’s not every day someone is going to go running into a burning building. Not every day can you cut somebody’s car apart. You never know what the next day is going to be. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something else comes up and totally amazes you.”

“It is beautiful out there at night with the stars and the moon above you,” said Javier.

Stressing that he was determined to change the history of the building—it is infamous in recent years with former tenants for loud and boisterous crowds and music— Javier said he is enjoying getting to know his customers.

“I think we are changing the history of this place. It is a place now where people want to have fun and have a good meal,” said Javier.

“It is where you will want to be and who you want to be with.”

One of the ways he plans on controlling the type of crowd that visits the restaurant is how he plans on using the dance floor—as mailing list, invitation-only events “to ensure it is a good crowd.”

Javier’s, he continued, uses as much local food products as possible, but some, like the coffee, come from his birthplace.

“The coffee comes directly from the backyards where I grew up,” said Javier, adding that they also feature a Chicchetti bar and specialty, signature drinks.

With seating for approximately

200, Javier’s also employs about 30 people.

Javier said they offer a happy hour every day from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and that every Friday they would be having a raffle of all the people who either stop by the restaurant or go there to dine the week prior, for a $25 gift certificate.

“No purchase is necessary,” noted Javier, adding that those winners would receive a special invitation to a Travers Party in The Blue Room and all would be in the running for a raffle for four seats in a private box for a Yankee’s game.

“They’re one of the best seats in the house,” said Javier.

As for Javier’s Neuvo Latin Cuisine, Javier said he is excited owning his own restaurant and of it being in the Spa City.

“We are here to stay, have fun and be a part of the community,” said Javier. “We want to bring a new level of tourism to Saratoga Springs and to add to the community.”

Saratoga County DA Appointed to Commission on Forensic Science SARATOGA COUNTY — Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III has been appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a member of the Commission on Forensic Science, a 14-member commission dedicated to developing minimum standards and a program of accreditation for all forensic laboratories in New York State.

Murphy said in a press statement, “I am honored to have been appointed to the commission to ensure that we maintain the best practices for all the forensic science labs in New York State. Only by having state-of-the-art labs, vigilant testing and retesting, and disciplined protocols can we ensure that evidence is properly examined and useful in criminal cases.”

Accreditation of a forensic DNA laboratory is granted through a seven-member DNA Subcommittee, which also advises the commission on any matter related to the implementation of scientific controls and quality assurance procedures for the performance of forensic DNA analysis.

Open House at the Saratoga Race Course

SARATOGA SPRINGS — And they’re off. Well not quite, but get ready to saddle up and enjoy a funfilled day getting a sneak peak at Saratoga Race Course’s 150th summer season this Sunday, June 14.

This year’s event will feature a free concert with Zendaya, star of the Disney Channel hit series Shake It Up! and finalist on season 16 of Dancing with the Stars.

out, but there will still be limited standing room on the apron on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“At the open house the bumping and pounding won’t be just the horse’s hooves,” said New York

Racing Association’s vice president Rodnell Workman. “Zendaya will have a fun entourage of dancers and singers.”

The open house not only welcomes people to the track, but also

generates much-needed funds for local charities. The charities set up various booths with fun activities for children of all ages.

The concert, which is the first to be held at the historic racing venue in years, comes in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first organized thoroughbred race meeting in Saratoga, which took place over the course of four days in August 1863.

“Saratoga Race Course is a truly tremendous sporting venue that deserves an anniversary celebration worthy of its stature in the community. Hosting a free concert with Zendaya allows us to kick off the season in a grandiose way while staying true to our tradition of affordable family fun during this annual pre-season celebration,” said Workman. “We look forward to once again welcoming families through the gates as we launch a memorable anniversary season at Saratoga.”

Prior to Zendaya’s performance, NYRA will host several non-wagering exhibition races on the main track in the tradition of the Newman E. Wait, Jr. trials.

This year’s event will continue the longstanding tradition of supporting local community and non-profit organizations through nominal fees for various

games and activities and the sale of discounted food and beverages.

The backyard will play host to a variety of activities including pony rides, inflatables, face painting, caricatures and mini golf, among other games. Kids can also take part in an equinethemed art contest in celebration of the 150th anniversary for the opportunity to win a named race and present a trophy in the winner’s circle during the summer meet. Activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, patrons can get a glimpse into the inner workings of the track with free backstretch tours every half hour beginning at 11 a.m. at the Clubhouse entrance.

The 33rd annual Open House will launch a series of high-profile events and activities in celebration of the 150th anniversary season at Saratoga Race Course.

The season-long celebration will be highlighted by special on-track activities and events on Saturday, August 3 when Saratoga Race Course commemorates the official anniversary of the first race in 1863.

Saratoga 2013 season passes will be available for purchase at Open House at the Reserved Seats Box Office. The passes, $75 for clubhouse admission and $35 for grandstand, are good for the entire 40-day Saratoga meet, including Travers Day on Saturday, August 24.

Saratoga Race Course turns 150 this summer and, like its previous seasons, will promise its own set of highlights and memories strung over the course of 40 days.

All the winners of Triple Crown races will, undoubtedly, be stabled on the Oklahoma backside.

First and foremost, Orb, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner, will be stabled under his trainer’s roof. Claude “Shug” McGaughey won his first Derby with Orb and is eager to train this colt up to the Travers Stakes.

He’s a late-charging, hard-running colt who blew past his rivals on the first Saturday in May. About 100 yards away, under the banner of D. Wayne Lukas,

trainer and legendary Hall of Famer, stables Oxbow, winner of this year’s Preakness Stakes. Oxbow, sixth in the Derby, snatched an easy lead in the Preakness and had enough in reserve to kick clear of Orb and spoil Orb’s bid for the ever-elusive Triple Crown—35 years and counting.

Walk over to Todd Pletcher’s barn and there rests Palace Malice, this year’s winner of the Belmont Stakes. Palace Malice finished 12th in the Derby while setting torrid speed fractions. He skipped the Preakness opting to rest up for a shot at the Belmont. Palace Malice and Oxbow were on the lead and it was Palace Malice, with jockey

Mike Smith aboard, who stole the race away from Oxbow and Orb. There’s no reason, save for health, that these horses won’t square off in the $1 million Travers Stakes toward on August 24. The clash of these three horses, all winners of a Triple Crown race, has not happened in quite some time.

In 2009, it appeared it would happen since Mine That Bird, Rachel Alexandra and Summer Bird—the Derby, Preakness and Belmont winners—were stabled on the grounds, but that fizzled as Mine That Bird was hurt, Rachel Alexandra tackled the older males in the Woodward Stakes, while Summer Bird went on to win the Travers in the slop.

But the three-year-olds aren’t the only game in town. Fort Larned, winner of the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs this year and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, will likely run in the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational. Flat Out, trained by Bill Mott, is fresh off a win in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. Should he be sound, he’ll contest Fort Larned in an exciting renewal of the Whitney.

Add to that the classic twoyear-old races like the Sanford and Hopeful, world-class turf fields, and, of course, the Travers, and it promises to be a memorable 150th birthday for Saratoga Race Course.

Jockey Dominguez to Be Honored at Siro’s Cup Benefit

by Brian Cremo for Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — After having to announce an early retirement from racing due to a traumatic brain injury suffered in a fall at Aqueduct this past January, Ramon Dominguez will be honored for his character and the impact he had on the sport.

The 20th Annual Marini Builders Siro’s Cup to benefit the Center for Disability Services will recognize Dominguez and honor his “dedication, accomplishments and persistence in the face of challenges” starting at 7 p.m. on July 18.

Dominguez holds the single season Saratoga Race Course record with 68 wins (2012).

“Ramon Dominguez, as everyone knows, is a three-time winner of the Eclipse Award (for Outstanding Jockey),” said Center for Disability Services spokesperson Anne Schneider Costigan. “We are just really thrilled and honored that he will be attending and he will be the recipient of this year’s award.”

As in years past, sports equine artist James Florentino has already painted the horse of Dominguez’s choice, which will be framed and unveiled during the ceremony. Each year, the Guest of Honor chooses a horse that is most special to him, or her. Until the night of the 18th, the identity of the horse in the painting will be kept a surprise. There will

also be gi-clee copies available for sale that night.

The event, which is held on the eve of the opening day of the Saratoga Race Course and has been coined the “unofficial opening of the Saratoga Race Course,” is officially set to start at 6:30 p.m. at Siro’s Restaurant on 168 Lincoln Avenue in Saratoga Springs.

When a group of young entrepreneurs started the tradition of the Siro’s Cup Benefit 20 years ago, 200 people attended, raising about $13,000. Consistently growing every year, the benefit had over 1,000 attendees last year and raised over $150,000 for the Center for Disability Services.

“We noticed that on the eve of opening day there really wasn’t a lot of activity, so we decided to take a chance and start this event at Siro’s Restaurant,” said Costigan, who has been part of the tradition since the beginning.

This year’s event will also include other top jockeys, trainers and guests who will dance to music from the Electric City Horns until 11 p.m. under an open air tent. The last 10 Guests of Honors have also been asked to attend.

The honorary chairpersons are George R. Hearst III, Christine Hearst, Earl B. Feiden, Josephine Feiden, Barry Larner and Sara Lee Larner. Bob Marini and Monica Marini are the chairpersons of the Siro’s Cup Committee.

172 Years of Heritage and Tradition Thousands of people will pass through the gates of the Saratoga County Fair in 2013 as they celebrate 172 years of traditions and fun. The origin of the Fair actually goes back to 1819 when state legislation created county fairs—basically a one-day cattle show, this early version was discontinued after 1824.

The modern version of the Saratoga County Fair began when the Saratoga County Fair Association was formed June, 24, 1841 at the Saratoga County Court House in the Village of Ballston Spa; the following year, it expanded to two days.

More than a century and a half later, agriculture remains one of the largest industries in Saratoga County, and the annual County Fair stands as an important event on a busy summer calendar, featuring hundreds of vendors, a large amusement midway and 30 acres of activities for young and old.

Hours and Admission The Fair runs through Tuesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 21; gates open at 9 a.m. daily to Midnight; Concession Buildings open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and animal exhibits are daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Live Music The ZZ Top tribute band Eliminator, based out of Kansas City, will open the Fair Tuesday night. Eliminator passionately pays tribute to the world-renowned ZZ Top by recreating their amazing four-decade rise to international fame. ZZ Top’s accomplishments include numerous Billboard hits such as Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, La Grange, Give Me All Your Lovin’, Cheap Sunglasses and Tush. Eliminator has shared the stage with such greats as Ted Nugent, Molly Hatchet, Grand Funk and 38-special.

“Gentle Giants” Coming to the Saratoga County Fair

The Saratoga County Fair will begin a week of draft horse display on Tuesday, July 16 with fun and activities with the gentle giants of the horse world.

North American Classic Series 6-Horse Hitch and the Large Draft Unicorn classes will be held Thursday, July 18 at 6 p.m. Rain date will be Friday, July 19 at 1 p.m.

The Open Halter Classes by breed and other hitch classes will compete on Friday, July 19 beginning at 9 a.m.

Windermere Farms will be

presenting six and eight horse hitch demonstrations in the Horse Ring on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday of Fair Week at approximately 6 p.m. each evening.

Windermere Farm is the premiere breeders of Percheron horses in the country and they are partners with an executive producer of the Gentle Giants Show in Jackson Fork, Wyoming. They have been featured on Gentle Giants on the RFD Network and show their beautiful horses all over the country.

This show attracts international attention with hitches that have come to Ballston Spa from Canada and states throughout the Northeast for the day. Be sure to see these magnificent horses with the meticulous harness and beautiful wagons.

Horses and drivers will compete in single cart classes as well as team (two), four and six horse hitches.

31 Days of Decluttering

by Jordana Turcotte for Saratoga TODAY I always hear “I don’t know where to start,” “it takes too long,” and so on; lots of excuses that just stop us from getting it done. I

thought I would come up with 31 days worth of mini-decluttering tasks that only take about 10 minutes but make a huge impact. In a few cases, the task may take longer if you are slow on the decisions or have more than a typical person, but that’s all the more the reason to trudge through and get it done.

It is summer and everyone wants to have fun. Getting each of these done quickly and efficiently each day will help with the overall clutter and definitely not keep you away from all the fun.

Post this on the fridge or bathroom mirror and check off each day when it is done. A checked off item brings great satisfaction. Start the month off with a few bins or boxes readily available for any donations you may find during this month. At

the end the month, let it all go in one delivery.

Day 1—Go through your sock drawer—pair up all the socks, let go of single ones or ones that are old and holey.

Day 2—Go through your undergarments drawer—let go of old, unworn items and replace neatly in the drawer.

Day 3—Find at least five things (or more) in your hanging clothes to let go of.

Day 4—Clean out the junk drawer—make sure you check all pens to see if they’re working.

Day 5—Take out all your pots and pans and make sure they all work, get rid of duplicates you don’t use and pots that have damaged Teflon or loose handles.

Day 6—Declutter your containers, make sure all have lids and let go of misshapen or stained containers, as well as too many in the same size.

Day 7—Clean off your kitchen counters—find a few things that can go or that are used infrequently and move them to a storage spot. More space on the counter makes cooking and cleaning that much easier.

Day 8—Clean out the fridge— go through and purge expired or rotten food, wipe down shelves for a fresh start.

Day 9—Clean out the freezer— let go of freezer burned items and items that you won’t eat, line things up and wipe down what you can

Day 11—Clear off your dining room table.

Day 12—Go through your catalogs and/or magazines and cull them down to about 3-4 inches max— don’t spend time reading them.

Look at the table of contents and pull out only the articles you plan to read and then read them, but let the magazine go. For catalogs, only keep the current season/month for those you plan to order from.

Day 13—Go through a stack of papers that you have no idea what is in it. Recycle or shred anything that you don’t need or will never reference.

Day 14—Go through the games (gaming systems or board games) and let go of what isn’t being played (you can sell, trade in or donate).

Day 15—Pick five movies (or more) you never watch and let them go.

Day 16—Pick five books (or more) you will never read again and let them go.

Day 17—Pick five CDs(or more) you never watch and let them go (come on, don’t you download everything now).

Day 18—Order two things you have been meaning to.

Day 19—Make two calls you have been meaning to get to.

Day 20—Set up two dinners or lunch dates with people you’ve been wanting to catch up with (make it for within the next two months).

Day 21—Find five things in the basement or attic to let go of what you were keeping “just because.”

Day 22—Go through the garage and spend 10 minutes just finding things that are broken or worn and throwing them out.

Day 23—Walk around the art and tidy up, letting go of anything broken you may find.

Day 24—Tidy up the front door—wipe it down, sweep and dust so it is clean, make sure your door number is visible. Plant a flower to bring some color.

Day 25—Clean out all the trash in your car and take out anything that doesn’t belong.

Day 26—Spend 10 minutes in your email deleting emails you no longer need.

Day 27—Spend 10 minutes in your electronic files deleting files you no longer need or old revisions that saved.

Day 28—Iron three things that you aren’t wearing because they aren’t ironed.

Day 29—Go through all your cleaners, consolidate half the bottles, and recycle and purge things you won’t use again.

Day 30—Go through the medicine cabinet and purge expired meds and tidy up (expired pills, both over the counter and prescription, can be put in used kitty litter or coffee grounds in a Ziploc bag and thrown in the trash—do not flush).

Day 31—Do something for yourself, something you have been meaning to do. You deserve it.

No matter how much you do or get done, at the end you will be a bit lighter in stuff: A win-win.

Help Your Plants Avoid Fungal Diseases in Hot Summer Weather

by Peter Bowden for Saratoga TODAY It looks like summer has arrived. What a joy this warm, dry stretch has been. Our gardens have been playing catch up after the 10 inches of rain during the first half of June. My wife and I managed to finally get all the veggies planted the weekend after Memorial Day. Along with hot summer weather come the fungal diseases.

Most of us are familiar with powdery mildew and black spot. Anyone who’s grown phlox, melons, squash or beans has probably seen powdery mildew. A plant under attack from this common fungal disease will exhibit misshapen leaves that appear to be coated with white powder. Black spot, another fungal disease, causes black spots (logically enough) to appear on the leaves followed by a gradual yellowing of the leaf. Black spot is very common on roses. These diseases start out as tiny spores present in the soil or on the stem of the dormant plant.

When conditions become right, they incubate and develop into a growing organism. Once these fungal diseases take hold, you’ll have no option but to spray with a fungicide or, in extreme cases, remove the infected plant. Fortunately, there are preventive measures that you can take to keep fungal diseases from taking hold in your garden.

We can get a clue on how to avoid fungal diseases by thinking about one that we humans are susceptible to: Athlete’s foot. We know that if we constantly wear damp, dirty sneakers, we increase the chances that we’ll get a case of Athlete’s foot. We avoid Athlete’s foot by drying our shoes between use, and we always (at least I hope you do) put on clean socks before we put our sneakers on. The tactics we use to prevent the spores of

Athlete’s foot from taking hold are quite similar to how we can prevent powdery mildew and other fungal diseases from getting a “toe hold’ in our flower and vegetable gardens.

Good garden hygiene. First, avoid working in your gardens when the plants are wet. When you handle wet plants, you may be spreading the spores of fungal diseases from plant to plant, increasing the chances that they will find a plant or location where conditions are favorable. Wait until the plants have dried completely before you handle them. If you are pruning plants that are susceptible to these diseases (like roses), clean the blades of your pruners with rubbing alcohol as you move from plant to plant. This will help to prevent the spread of diseases.

Keep your gardens wellweeded. Weeds may play host to a disease that won’t affect them, but your garden plants may not be so lucky. Weeds are also a good place for insect pests to hide out.

Don’t spray your garden with water. Most important of all, try not to wet the leaves of your plants when watering.

This spring, our garden has already been subjected to too much damp weather. When you wet the leaves, you’re creating the soggy condition that fungal diseases love (and your plants hate). Give them a break and buy a watering wand so you can soak the soil while wetting the leaves as little as possible.

To me, spraying leaves and flowers is like intentionally putting on damp, dirty socks. I know you’ve all seen those TV commercials showing folks, who supposedly know better, misting down the flowers.

It is picturesque, but it’s one of the worst things you can do to your garden plants. Some houseplants benefit from misting in the dry winter home, but it is a practice that is best avoided in the outdoor garden.

In addition to promoting fungal diseases, spraying your plants with water washes away the pollen.

Once this happens, the plant has no use for the flower and aborts it. This means that if you make a practice of spraying your plants with water, the

flowers won’t last very long. And, in the case of vegetables, you won’t get much fruit. Did you really do all that work planting just to sabotage your own efforts by spray watering?

Plants absorb water through their roots, not the leaves and flowers. Think about it—if you were out in the desert about to die from thirst and I came along with a nice cold glass of water, what would you want me to do with it? Give it to you to drink or throw it in your face? Stop

being mean to your gardens, and don’t spray your plants with water.

Give them a nice cool drink instead.

The Sharpest Knife in the Drawer

I am going to talk about my favorite subject, Kitchen Knives! I cannot with space and time cover every kitchen knife, so I will try to talk about three of my more popular knives. I will go into brands when you stop in and share a cup of Espresso with me. The best advice I can give is that a good knife is the one that best fits your hand. A good knife is a sharp knife! You could

own the most expensive knife in the world, but if it’s dull it’s not as good as a sharp $10 knife.

Paring A paring knife is a small knife with a plain edge blade that is ideal for peeling and other small or intricate work (such as de-veining a shrimp, removing the seeds from a jalapeño, ‘skinning’ mushrooms or cutting small garnishes). It is designed to be an

Grass-Fed Beef from Lewis Waite Farm

In 1966 Alan Brown, a mere 23 years old at the time, purchased the farm in the town of Jackson that is now Lewis Waite Farm, one of the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s main meat providers. At that time, the farm was deserted, and the historic 19th century house was in need of extensive repair and was without power or running water, Brown recalls.

“We started with some pigs and beef cattle and plugged along slowly, clearing land, improving, getting the brush out of fields and all of that,” he remembers, adding that the farm grew as the years went on.

Fast-forward to 2013, and that original plot of land is now included in the 450 acres that makes up the present-day Lewis Waite Farm, which is still run by Alan and his wife, Nancy. The pair are “big believers in keeping things as close to nature as possible,” and

the farm prides itself on its beef and pork, raised using organic methods on certified organic land. They also lease 140 acres for hay, which are also NOFA-NY certified organic.

The “tranquil lives” of the cattle—which graze in open fields on a rotational system, which aids native grass growth and contributes to soil health—result in meat that is not only tender and tasty, but also healthy.

“Our cows never get any grain, ever,” Alan and Nancy emphasize, and it is this more natural food that creates meat that is lean and nutrient-rich. The beef is also dry-aged for two weeks, which contributes to concentrating the great flavor.

Lewis Waite’s pork is of similar quality. The pigs are allowed to frolic in the mud, bathe in the sun, and root in open pastures. Fed local corn and soybeans, as well as kelp, alfalfa, diatomaceous earth and garden leftovers, Lewis Waite’s pork is free of hormones, animal byproducts, antibiotics and preservatives.

With such high-quality meat, it is no surprise that Lewis Waite’s ground beef, steaks and pork chops and shoulder—the best-selling products at the farm’s stand—are

so popular at the Saratoga Farmer’s Market.

To prepare your own piece of Lewis Waite meat, make sure to cook it at a lower temperature than you would a grain-fed product and check it regularly to avoid over-cooking.

Grass-Fed Steak on an Outdoor Grill Recipe adapted from Farmer and the Grill: A Guide to Grilling, Barbecuing and Spit-Roasting Grassfed Meat…and for saving the planet, one bite at a time,

Ingredients: 1–2 tablespoons coarse salt 1–2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1–2 cloves garlic, minced Grass-fed steaks to serve 2-4 people, at least 1¼–1½ inches thick*

Combine the salt, pepper and garlic in a small bowl. Rub the mixture into both sides of the steak, then allow the meat to come to room temperature while you prepare the grill.

Start the grill and warm it until it is hot. If you are using a gas grill, turn off all but one of the burners once it has come up to temperature.

If you are using charcoal, be sure all the coals have been raked to one side. Use the hand test: the grate will be hot enough when you can hold your palm 3-4 inches above the metal for no more than three seconds.

Sear the steaks for 2-3 minutes on each side directly over the flame, with the lid down. Then, move the steaks to the part of grill that is not lit. Set the lid in place and allow the steaks to cook, without flipping them, until they reach 120-135 degrees on a meat thermometer (depending on your preference for doneness), about 10-20 minutes, depending on the size of the steak.

Remove the steaks to a platter and allow them to rest a few minutes before serving. *Grass-fed steak can be purchased at Saratoga Farmers’ Market.

‘Our Longest Drive’ Goes Beyond Game of Golf

by Brian Cremo Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — When Saratoga Springs summer resident Vic Zast was recovering from open heart surgery, the book “Await Your Reply” by Dan Choan inspired him to journey to the Arctic Circle.

That idea transformed into a reality when Zast decided to invite three of his golfing buddies on the adventure of a lifetime to join him on a 5,500-mile, 17-day drive in an RV through seven U.S. states, two Canadian provinces and two territories to the final destination — a threehole golf course, cut out of the tundra, at the end of 500 miles of a gravel road with no emergency services in Inuvik of the Northwest Territories.

“It wasn’t meant to be a golf trip at the beginning, but what got [my friends] interested was the fact that there was a golf course up there and that’s why I timed it,” Zast said.

They would play at midnight on June 21, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

One of his three friends passed away a year and a half before the four left their homes in Chicago on June 2, 2011. Mike Allen was brought along in a hexagonal cherry wood urn in addition to Zast, Dan Johnson and Jim Thompson.

Zast, 68, has been an idea man his whole life, making a living out of creating perfumes in the fragrance industry, including a five-year stint in Paris with the popular line, Coty, where he was part of the executive management team.

“I made a career out of making something out of nothing,” Zast said. “I really think I know a good idea when I see it, and there aren’t a lot of good ideas that come around.

But this is an idea that I have yet to find anyone who has said, ‘That’s a stupid idea.’”

But the local Saratoga Diary writer for bloodhorse.com didn’t know his idea would end up being formed into a full-length feature documentary, premiering at the Saratoga Springs Film Forum.

In addition to the four best friends, who golfed every Saturday together for 20 years, was the six-person film crew brought along to document the whole trip. After originally figuring he would use his own home video and take pictures along the way to document the travels, many of Zast’s friends expressed how he should have it professionally done.

was introduced to Martin Rodahl, a 27-year-old Norwegian film director with a successful film production company, 71 Degrees North. To make things even more ironic, Rodahl’s company was named in reference to the latitude where Rodahl grew up— north of the Arctic Circle.

After hitting it off right away, the two decided to collaborate on what would eventually be the fulllength feature film. With the crew all between the ages of 25 and 28, Zast described the film as “the journeys of old men as seen through the eyes of a young man.”

“Martin is so crafty, so skilled as a cinematographer and as a director, that he made up his mind and didn’t tell us beforehand that once we entered that RV in Chicago and began the journey, he decided that he and his crew would make it seem like they were not even there,” Zast said.

“He was totally apart from the situation. He let everything happen in true documentarian form so that the film is totally real.”

What ensued was a story of best friends, who have drastically different characteristics, playing golf in six different places on the way from the manicured Westmoreland Country Club in Illinois to the frozen tundra north of the Arctic Circle on Road’s End golf course.

“When you drive a ball at the

Arctic Circle in the tundra, it seems like it’s carrying 1,000 yards,” Zast said. “The last drive that I took, we pounded a tee into the gravel road.

I teed the ball up in the middle of that highway and drove it back down the highway. It was one of the best drives I ever had. It just kept going and it bounced and it bounced and it bounced and it bounced and I swear it’s still bouncing.”

At Road’s End, 70-80 townsfolk, U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson and members of the town council stayed up to watch the event.

“The game of golf is the same in both places,” Zast said. “Those people think they’re playing golf. You cannot convince them that that isn’t golf even when they hit it off a two-byfour. The same thrill, the same idea of getting a score. Don’t worry about where you’re playing, just think for a minute of the fact that you are playing and how great it is to be able to play.”

Along the way, the friends meet different challenges, including needing an automotive repair in British Columbia, which was delivered from 500 miles away. They also see a transformation in Mike Allen, who despite being dead becomes a central character.

“When he passed away he was not very liked by a lot of people and that’s because he suffered from juvenile diabetes and toward the end

of his life he was real low and it was tough to have him around,” Zast said.

“He was kind of a misfit, but he was our friend and you stay true to your friends, so we decided to take him along. As I carried him from place to place and people started hearing about who we were, we became kind of quasi-celebrities, but he became the biggest celebrity of the bunch.”

Before the film could be finished, Golf Channel TV wanted to use it as part of a series. A deal was made to make excerpts from the eventual film to be used for a primetime TV series in the fall of 2012, winning the Northern Lights Award, presented by Canada’s Tourism Commissions and a Cynopsis Sports Media Award.

“This is a story about hope,” Zast said. “I’m a guy who’s 68 years old and I’ve never made a film. That’s really beating the odds. People don’t really have that kind of luck. I tried something new and became successful at it.

If I was allowed to script this, the story behind the story, I couldn’t write it.”

After coming up with the idea in November of 2009, it has now come full circle with the premiere of the film. The documentary of friendship, adventure, aging, death and triumph runs 104 minutes long and will begin at the Film Forum at 7:30 p.m. on July 21.

“Nothing is scripted,” Zast said.

“Human nature is such that it writes

its own story. The only thing we had was an itinerary. We knew what it would take to get beyond the Arctic Circle. And that became the idea behind the story, whether or not we would make it there on time. I’m thrilled that it’s going to be in Saratoga Springs because I’ve spent so much of my life here. I also am thrilled that a lot of my neighbors are going to be able to see this because they know the different side of me. They know the horseracing side. And they’ll see me in all my raw faults—my fear of water, my demanding demeanor and my sense of humor will all come out in the film. But this is a community that has been very good to me for all the last 50 years and maybe this is a little way of giving back and saying, ‘here’s what a native son-of-sorts has done, so take a look and see if you like it.’”

For someone who has no fear about trying new things, Zast said he feels proud of this experience just as much or more than any other project, especially since he beat the odds of creating something this successful at his current age.

“They say a creative person dies twice,” Zast said. “The first time he dies is when his ideas are no longer recognized or found to be special. And the second time is when he actually passes from this earth. I feel confident that I haven’t died the first time yet.”

like he just graduated from high school. There’s the possibility that his new team might view him as a boy amongst men.

Personally, I like the guy. He has proven in the past six years to be as knowledgeable as any other collegiate basketball coach. He seems to have ice water running through his veins because of his calm and cool demeanor during pressure situations. It’s interesting that the Celtics looked to move from the traditional NBA scenario of recycling fired coaches from the league or making a current NBA coach an offer to consider.

Danny Ainge, president of basketball operations for the Celtics, is a big fan of Stevens and was thrilled that he accepted the offer.

At Butler, Stevens led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championship games in 2010 and 2011, a remarkable feat for a Horizon League team.

Butler will now move into the revamped Big East beginning this coming season, but without their highly successful coach.

The university has just announced Stevens’ replacement, Brandon Miller, who was recently hired as an assistant. Miller, 34, was a former player at Butler.

According to him, his philosophy has a lot of similar characteristics to that of coach Stevens.

“Brad Stevens did a great job being Brad Stevens,” Miller said. “My goal is to be the best Brandon Miller I can be.”

This will be another interesting scenario to watch as it plays out during the coming collegiate basketball season.

Stevens might have the perfect temperament to coach at the professional level. It will take him awhile to adjust to the different types of NBA personalities, the way the game is played and also the way it’s officiated. How Stevens’ coaching style will translate at the professional level will be a new experience for both the Celtics players and loyal fans.

Eric Musselman, who is an associate head coach at Arizona State University, started his coaching career in professional hoops at the age of 37, first in the CBA, and then as an assistant in the NBA before landing the head coaching job with the Golden State Warriors and then to the Sacramento Kings.

Musselman says, “Stevens is going to need an experienced NBA staff. They’re going to

have to know the personnel of professional basketball. That’s probably more important than knowing X’s and O’s, and not just the superstars but the rotation guys too…Stevens must learn how to deal with a shorter time on the shot clock, as well as the fact that the game is eight minutes longer. Late game situations will be a very different scenario compared to the college game.

There won’t be too many fullcourt game preps as a late game strategy because the ball will be moved to half-court. There will be a need for a special playbook just for half-court out-of-bounds plays, and of course practice will be different because there won’t be three days or longer between games for the preparation.”

I think Stevens will adjust his game and philosophy of coaching. Getting to understand that type of game will take some time, and moving into an environment that has three times the number of games will be challenging.

Despite what Musselman says, I see the players as Stevens’ biggest hurdle. Once he gets them to buy into his style and expectations, the Celtics will be back as playoff contenders.

Hatton, Shanahan Capture Jr. National Titles

The Adirondack Hawks 18U finished as runners up in the Dan Duquette Sports Academy Tournament held June 28–30.

The Hawks started out the tournament playing the Northeast Stars (NY) and lost a close game 2–1.

On Saturday morning the Hawks played Danbury (CT) Post No. 60 and won 7–2. Later that afternoon the Hawks played the Schenectady (NY) Cyclones and won 3–2.

The wins placed the Hawks into the championship game on Sunday morning against the Berkshire Americans, losing 11–2. The 18U Adirondack Hawks play within the ENYTB league and play home games at Gavin Park in the Town of Wilton.

PITTSBURGH — Burnt Hills High School graduate, Jack Hatton, 17, and Shenendehowa Middle Schooler, Kiernan Shanahan, 12, representing the Jason Morris Judo Center captured USJA/USJF Jr. National titles over the weekend at Robert Morris University.

Hatton went 3-0 on the day in the 17-20-year-old 90kg weight class which is a division up from his normal 81kg division.

Shanahan claimed his first Jr. National title posting a 5-1 record in the 13-14-year-old. 48kg division. Shanahan recovered from an

earlier overtime loss to claim the gold by beating the athlete who beat him in the double-elimination event. Burnt Hills Senior, Eric Skylar, 16, added a bronze medal in the 17-20-year-old 81kg category along with also claiming a silver in the first day of the event 15-16-year-old 81kg division to close out the JMJC medal count at the event.

Also, Nick Kossor, a 2016 JMJC Olympic hopeful, will be among those in action at the Liberty Games in Mekeel Christian Academy in Scotia Saturday, July 13.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Hall of Fame members Nick Zito, Angel Cordero, Jr., and John Velazquez are the first scheduled participants in the National Museum of Racing’s “Hall of Fame Legends” series, a weekly program scheduled for Tuesdays during the Saratoga Race Course meet produced in conjunction with the Capital OTB television network.

The first scheduled program features Zito on Tuesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. in the Museum’s Hall of Fame Gallery. The program is free to attend with a paid Museum admission. Former jockey Jeff Carle of the Capital OTB network will serve as the program host. The series will feature 60-minute interviews by Carle with opportunities for audience members to ask questions of some of the biggest names in thoroughbred racing.

WILTON — The Adirondack Hawks 16U (Blue) is headed to New Hampshire for the North Eastern Zone Tournament the weekend of July 19. after winning the June Madness Tournament at Devil Cats Stadium held June 29–30.

BALLSTON SPA — Tony Devizzio will be hosting a baseball skills clinic for boys ages 7–13, from 2–4 p.m. Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19 at The Milton Recreation Field. Level One (younger age players) is 2-4 p.m., while Level Two (older players, majors and 50–70, travel) will go from 4–6 p.m. Skills covered will include hitting to all fields, pitching with both power and finesse, footwork and baserunning technique.

The Summer Break Triple Threat Basketball Camp at St. Mary’s Gymnasium in Ballston Spa will be held Monday, July 22 through the following Friday. Divisions for both boys and girls will go from 8:30–11:30 a.m. each day and will feature skill drills for shooting competitions, dribbling and passing. There will also be one-on-one, two-on-two and threeon-three practice games. All contests and tournament games will be on Championship Friday, followed by an awards ceremony. Syracuse basketball shirts given to the camp by Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim will be issued out to the first 40 campers. A permission form is due before the first day along with a $70 fee on a first come, first serve basis.

Americans Take 12U Distrcit 11 Title

Undefeated 9–10 All-Stars Advance

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Americans 12U all-stars clinched the District 11 Championship against Glens Falls at East Side Rec, 11-0, Monday.

In what ended up being a much more lop-sided game compared to Saturday, the Americans routed Glens Falls thanks to a quick start both at the plate and from the mound.

Southpaw Gordon Hogben pitched three perfect innings before giving up one hit and eventually ending his outing with one walk and four strikeouts.

Alex Henderson and Lewie Clarke had RBI singles in the first inning to put Saratoga up 2-0 early against Glens Falls starter Trent Girard. T.J. Tracy drove home a run in the second inning before Christopher James’ two-RBI triple made it 5-0.

After the Americans offense continued to tack onto the lead, Hogben and Drew Patnode hit solo shots to make the final score 11-0.

Saratoga hosts District 13’s Hudson Valley at 2 p.m. Saturday at East Side Rec. The Saratoga Americans claimed that trip to the title game after defeating Glens Falls, 13-8, Saturday, July 6.

After facing a 6-0 deficit in the third, Henderson came up clutch with a grand slam to pull the Americans within two. Justin Geils also had two hits in the inning, including a two-out bases-clearing single shortly after Henderson’s homer to put the Americans up 7-6.

Dan Eaton added two more runs with a double in the fourth to go up 9-6 for some needed insurance before Glens Falls battled back to 9-8.

Saratoga responded in the fifth, as Chris James’ RBI single in the and Patnode’s three-run bomb secured the victory, as Hogben closed out the game from the mound with back-to-back scoreless innings.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Saratoga Americans remained undefeated after taking the District 11 9-and-10-year-old Little League title game Monday night against Mechanicville-Stillwater, 12–9, at West Side Rec. The Americans avoided a possible Game 2 in part by a four-run fifth inning.

With the game tied at nine, Brendan Joyce came through with his second two-RBI double of the game for eventual game winning runs. Joyce, who finished the day 4-for-4, was later knocked in by Connor Hart’s single to left.

Mechanicville had tied the game at nine a piece with Joshua Germain’s RBI single shortly after Timmy Buchal’s RBI double knocked in Tyler Tessero.

Tessero and Jimmy Buchal both added a double for Mechancville in the loss.

The winning pitcher, out of the bullpen, for Saratoga was Daniel Vitello.

The Saratoga Americans advance to the Section III double-elimination tournament, where they will have to play on the road against the District 16 winner Sunday before hosting District 15 (Columbia County) the following Monday. If the team carries on its winning ways, the championship game is scheduled for July 18.

Floral Fete Contest Offers Chance to Create Art, Win Cash Prizes SARATOGA SPRINGS — Those looking to find an outlet for their creativity have a new opportunity coming up with the announcement of this year’s Floral Fete, an old-fashioned promenade contest to take place on the eve of the Saratoga Race Course’s 150th anniversary August 2.

One of the most fascinating elements of the Floral Fete, will be the self-decorated, non-motorized contingent of Saratoga County children and adults who are decorating bicycles, baby carriages, wagons and other creative contraptions on wheels in the floral motif reminiscent of the popular fetes of the late 1800s and early 1900s in Saratoga.

Prizes for this group will include a $1,000 “Most Creative” entry overall prize. Additionally, each category of entry will have its own set of prizes.

As in days of old, the judging will take the quality of the flowers and the design into consideration, as well as originality, creativity and historical significance. Although most entries, to date, boast plans

for a variety of real flowers, cut and potted, the rules are accepting of some hand-made and faux flowers—“nice silk-like flowers, and hand-made crepe paper flowers on children’s entries will be accepted faux, but no plastic.”

The promenade will begin at 7:30 p.m., from the corner of Route 50/Cornelius Vanderbilt Highway and Broadway. The self-decorated, non-motorized division of bicycles, baby carriages, wagons and other contraptions on wheels will join in at Walton Street, as the promenade continues down Broadway to Congress Park, where the public is invited by Marylou Whitney and

John Hendrickson to a communitywide ice cream social in the park.

Stewarts is dishing out five flavors of ice cream in cups, and entertainment from ragtime music and performing children’s groups to strolling entertainers, will abound.

Marylou and John have purchased Saratoga 150 tokens that will be given out to exchange for free rides on the carousel, and a birthday cake will be ceremoniously cut to the sounds of traditional birthday songs. Elvis Impersonator, Local Woman Team Up to Fight Breast Cancer

by Chelsea DiSchiano Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — After her mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer four years ago, Helen Levendos decided to take it upon herself to create a fun event that would benefit the Capital Region’s chapter of the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Several years ago after meeting Donny ‘Elvis’ Romines, the popular local Elvis impersonator, Levendos asked him to perform at her first fundraiser, which then turned into a popular reoccurring event that has taken place all over the Capital Region, from Lake George to Saratoga Springs to Albany. “[Donny] has been with me raising money for the ACS and making strides against breast cancer for four years now,” Levendos said.

“He really puts on a great show—he gets the audience involved and is a good entertainer.”

Romines said he enjoys

performing at Levendos’ fundraisers because of the cause, adding that it not only is a personal cause for Levendos but for himself as well.

“I have three sisters and three brothers, and my middle sister was diagnosed with cancer last year, so it hits home,” Romines said. “Thank God they got it all, and she just had another CAT scan that came back all clear, but it gives me another reason to do this and to help the cause so hopefully they can one day cure that terrible disease.”

Levendos said this particular fundraiser will be very special, as it will be held just two weeks after the one-year anniversary of her mother’s passing due to breast cancer.

The upcoming event will feature a performance by Romines, along with a cash bar, food and a 50/50 raffle with prizes ranging from gift certificates to local restaurants and gift baskets with clothing items that raise cancer awareness, such as pink backpacks, fannypacks and more.

a table set up with representatives from the ACS, who will have pamphlets and information available to anyone with questions.

“People can speak to [ACS

representatives] about their programs and how to get help, and they put them in the right direction to get that help,” Levendos said.

The ACS is a nationwide,

community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem, according to their website.

The organization funds research to understand the causes of cancer, offers prevention and educational efforts to help prevent and detect cancer early, and offers free information, programs, services, and community referrals to patients, survivors, and caregivers through every step of a cancer experience.

“We have to keep the fight on until we win the fight,” Romines said. “That’s what I do and why I come—you’ve got to try, because if you don’t try you’re not going to win at all.”

The Elvis Fundraiser will take place July 19 from 7 - 10 p.m. at the Holiday Inn located in downtown Saratoga. Tickets are $20 per person, with all proceeds benefitting the Capital Region branch of the ACS. For more information or to reserve a spot, contact Helen Levendos at (518) 745-7821.

My Phishin’ Trip: The Phish Experience

by Mark Bolles Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — On most days crossing Route 50 from Geyser Road toward Spa Park is treacherous, however on the evening of Friday, July 5, the traffic was thick and slow moving as hordes of fans for the enigmatic jam band Phish were descending on the famed performing arts center for the first of their three-night stint. As I slowly rolled my Prius toward my parking spot, I spied groups of young people, tan and fit. I was secretly envious of these kids with their whole lives ahead of them, out for a good time, seemingly without a care in the world. I was there to do a job. When did I get so old? Why so serious?

As fans were making their way to SPAC, so were storm clouds.

Concertgoers were held at the entrance gates with no admittance while Mother Nature performed her own show of lightning and thunder.

Meanwhile those on concert grounds sought refuge in the amphitheater.

Like a lame opening act, the storm

fizzled out and failed to impress. The gates were opened, the show was on!

I made my way in, keenly aware that somehow a skunk must have entered the lawn area. After all, Spa State Park is forested so I guess it would not be unusual to have some skunk at a Phish concert. I’m sure I smelled it, but never did find it, nor did I find my seat. With a reporter’s ticket in hand I began the descent into the amphitheater.

The flawless rock quartet was already performing their unique brand of improvisational musical mash-up while the crowd was getting groovy dancing in the aisles and staring into space. How was I going to get to my seat through the melee of sweaty, swaying bodies? I was so close, but it could have been miles. In the throng of fandom the situation began to get really freaky! Someone handed me a joint, I passed. I had to keep my wits if I was going to make it through this and somehow write a cohesive account of the evening’s adventure.

Just then, a wild-eyed young woman stared directly at me exclaiming “I want to hear you say f*** yeah, say f

yeah, say f yeah...” She was serious and had to be appeased. “F yeah,” I said, although my heart was not in it. Wild eyes was validated and on her way.

I just want to get to my seat! A patient and dutiful SPAC employee with a micro light peered at my ticket and informed me that I was close.

She then went back to corralling the chaos. WHACK, hit in the head with a glow stick, BUMP, a sweaty, shirtless guy pushed past spilling beer.

Somehow amidst the frenzy of activity, that skunk made its way into the amphitheater. I held my ground, arms folded, stoic. Why so serious?

Intermission: The dazed and confused shuffled out while the band took a break from serious jamming. This trip was only half over for some but I was done. I don’t fancy mania or fanaticism, however a Phish concert is best described as phenomena. So, why is Phish so popular? At the core is musicianship. After decades of performance the band mates intuitively jibe well. This gives the members tremendous creative space to solo and the fans really dig it.

psychedelic experience. Perhaps the secret of success is this: Phish know their fans and care enough to give them a great time. In turn, the fans, joyous and euphoric, celebrate the music which in turn motivates Phish to give the fans their very best. It is

more than self-sustaining. The energy builds like the slow storms that were also very much part of the busy weekend in Saratoga Springs. Clouds gathered, crowds gathered, anticipation, the event, dissipation. Then it happened all over again and again.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The New York City Ballet has officially arrived at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) for its 48th season, which started July 10 and will continue through the 13th. This season includes 14 ballets, six by company founder and choreographer George Balanchine. The ballet will also

present classics from its repertory but will perform three new ballets, including Peter Martins’ “Bal de Couture”; Christopher Wheeldon’s “This Bitter Earth”; and Justin Peck’s “Year of the Rabbit,” respectively. Tickets for this season’s performances are available at www.spac.org.

In other good news, NYCB and SPAC have come to an agreement to keep the historic annual engagement in the Spa City for yet another summer. Their agreement is again for a short one-week summer engagement in 2014, but officials from both organizations stressed that they are seeking ways to preserve NYCB’s performances in Saratoga.

“We remain firmly committed to SPAC’s partnership with New York City Ballet and the continuance of this treasured residency,” said Marcia J. White, SPAC’s president and executive director. “While we are continuing to look at ways to restore a longer residency for future seasons, it is a time-consuming process, and as it is essential for both organizations to begin planning their next calendar year of performances, we have decided to move forward with plans for a one-week season by NYCB at SPAC in 2014.”

Regarded as one of the world’s foremost dance companies, New York City Ballet will

kick off its Saratoga engagement on Tuesday, July 9. The company will present seven performances over the course of the week which concludes with the Saturday, July 13 fundraising Ballet Gala: The Ruby Ball. The company will showcase a diverse repertory of 14 stunning ballets during its Saratoga engagement including Balanchine masterpieces Serenade and Theme and Variations as well as a special Gala. Also highlighting the season will be three performances of Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit, which received wide critical acclaim following its New York debut in October.

“New York City Ballet has spent more than 40 years performing at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and we are extraordinarily grateful for our loyal and enthusiastic audiences there. SARATOGA SPRINGS — With the release of his landmark CD “Where There Is Life” in 1995, Luciano emerged as one of the most important reggae singers in decades and the greatest hope for roots reggae’s survival in the digital dancehall era.

In these troubled times, Luciano’s engaging baritone resonates like a divinely ordained instrument possessing the power to comfort and, seemingly, the informed biblical authority to warn of impending destruction. While many of his so called “conscious” contemporaries have faltered by recording songs that glorify wanton sex and random violence as a means of topping the charts, Luciano has held steadfast to enriching Rasta principles; these positive lyrical themes have justifiably earned him the title of The Messenger.

However, the humble singer also refers to himself as the child of a king, which is the title of his latest CD on VP Records.

Produced by Byron Murray of Kingston’s In the Streetz Productions, “Child of a King” is one of The Messenger’s most esteemed works, mixing classic cover versions and original tunes, recent hits and brand new boom shots. Luciano estimates this to be his 40th album; the prolific artist releases three (full length) CDs per year.

Born Jepther Washington McClymont on October 20, 1964 in Davey Town, a small community located atop a hilly region on the road to Mandeville in the central Jamaican parish of Manchester. In the late 80s, he arrived in Jamaica’s bustling capital Kingston hoping to transform his musical talent into a flourishing career. He sold oranges in the marketplace as a means of initially supporting himself, but when a drought restricted that year’s orange crop, he returned to Mandeville. However, it wasn’t

long before Luciano went back to Kingston, this time with even greater determination to succeed.

As the 1990s progressed, Luciano recorded for a few producers but failed to make any significant headway until he met Freddie McGregor. “Shake It Up” (a cover version of Cheryl Lyn’s R&B hit) recorded for Freddie’s Big Ship label became a number one hit in the UK in 1993 and was featured on Luciano’s first release for VP Records “After All.” With the release of “Where There Is Life” for Island Jamaica/ Xterminator, Luciano’s deeply devotional yet accessible lyrics and the beautiful melodies of “Its Me Again Jah”, “Your World and Mine” and “Lord Give Me Strength,” coupled with Fatis’ contemporary one drop riddims, catapulted the singer to the top of the reggae charts, toppling (at least temporarily) the decade long reign of deejays rapping x-rated lyrics over digitized dancehall beats.

Luciano and Fatis (alongside preeminent musicians such as saxophonist Dean Frasier and drummer Sly Dunbar) created several exceptional releases including 1997’s “The Messenger” and 1999’s “Sweep Over My Soul.” Although they parted ways in 1999 due to artistic differences within the Xterminator camp, Luciano consistently acknowledges Fatis’ essential role in establishing the foundation for his far-reaching success.

“I came out of roots and culture as a reggae singer and have proven to people that I can fit into any genre of music,” he proclaims.

“I sing reggae, gospel, roots—I will sing rock too, but always keeping my message clean, spiritual and cultural. There are no barriers in music. Although I am well-known as a reggae culture singer, I have an international message so I cannot leave it just to reggae people. I have to extend it to people of all walks of life.”
