...and to Welcome Home, your (Award-Winning!) go-to-guide for Life in the Saratoga Region!
When I’m describing this magazine to people, I tend to call it a phone book on steroids and everyone knows exactly which one I’m talking about, and they immediately say…
“Oh, I love that magazine!”
Saratoga TODAY has been doing this guide since our first 2007/2008 spiral bound edition and it’s grown so much over the years - I’m still amazed at what this area offers! Whether you’re just moving here or are lucky enough to call Saratoga home, I hope you use and enjoy this issue!
Saratoga is (and always will be!) an awesome place to live and we would like to help you around…
Saratoga TODAY has put together everything you need to know in this one handy informative community guide… after all, providing local news is what we do best! We hope you enjoy this issue (don’t forget to check websites for the most upto-date information) and I must close with a big THANK YOU! to our advertisers. Please mention us by name when visiting them…

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is an award-winning, year-round market with an array of locally grown and sourced products. For 45 years, the Saratoga Farmers’ Market has served as a food hub and community gathering place, offering activities, events, and children’s programs that support the businesses at the market while enhancing the community of Saratoga Springs.
From May to October, the farmers’ market is held at High Rock Park in downtown Saratoga Springs on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 3 to 6 p.m. Outdoor markets host up to 80 vendors every Saturday and are held rain or shine under three beautiful pavilions that offer protection from the sun and weather. Market-goers enjoy walking and biking along Saratoga’s paved Greenbelt Trail to the farmers' market, and the City Center’s parking garage offers ample parking options during the busy summer months.
The outdoor markets at High Rock Park offer an unparalleled assortment of fruits, vegetables, herbs, artisan cheese, jams, honey and maple products, artisan goods (clothing, pottery, jewelry), baked goods, meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products (milk and yogurt), flowers, soap and body products, and a variety of ready-to-eat foods. In the spring, local farms have a wide variety of starter plants for gardeners looking to plant established flowers and vegetables.
The farmers’ market moves indoors from November to April to the Wilton Mall food court. The market is open every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There’s nothing better than fresh local produce in the winter–here in Saratoga Springs so that you can taste that freshness all year long! The winter market
is notable for its variety. You’ll find naturally grown winter veggies (Including hydroponically-grown salad greens and tomatoes), meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, yogurt, milk, honey, jam, pickles, soap and body products, handmade jewelry and clothing, and more! Vendors offer ready-made foods, so you can enjoy a variety of meal options and even grab-and-go snacks while you shop!
The Saratoga Farmers’ Market is committed to supporting local businesses, meaning that all products sold at the market must be produced locally within 50 miles of Saratoga Springs. When you shop at the farmers’ market, you buy unique and quality products that support local communities and the economy. Local businesses help Saratoga Springs thrive and inspire others to develop their unique businesses. The personality and character reflected in our shopping districts are because of these small businesses. The same is true for the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. There’s more to the Saratoga Farmers’ Market experience than grocery shopping. This lively market is also perfect for meeting friends, connecting with your community, and enjoying entertainment and family-friendly events. From chef demonstrations to live music, there’s always something fun happening at the market. Stop by and check it out!
For more information, find us online at www.saratogafarmersmarket.org, where you can sign up for our weekly newsletter, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram @SaratogaFarmersMarket.

Saratoga Springs Public Library delivers resources and experiences that engage, entertain, educate, and empower our entire community.
A hub of community activity, the library serves tens of thousands of visitors of all ages each year. Our collection of books, magazines, recorded books, music, movies, and television series has something for everyone.
The library is located in the heart of downtown Saratoga Springs, just one block from Broadway. We’re open seven days a week, year ‘round (except major federal holidays), and offer a broad array of programs for the whole family. Our website, SSPL.org, provides 24/7 access to the library’s catalog.
The library is chartered to serve the Saratoga Springs School District, which includes the City of Saratoga Springs, and portions of the towns of Wilton, Greenfield, Milton, and Malta. Cardholders in good standing may borrow most items available on the shelf, regardless of their residency. Out of area cardholders can borrow most items, but there are exceptions. A member of the Southern Adirondack Library System and part of a joint automation agreement with libraries in the Mohawk Valley Library System, we share a catalog and have reciprocal borrowing arrangements with libraries in an eight-county region.
Saratoga Springs Public Library offers a full slate of activities for every member of the family, including:
• Monthly book and short story discussion groups for teens and adults.
• Ongoing local history programs, highlighting the rich and colorful heritage of our area.
• Volunteer Opportunities for teens.
• Story Times for children’s various developmental stages.
• The Children’s Room also sponsors some very special annual programs, including:
• Coordinating library visits for every third grade classroom in the school district.
• Hatching chicks in the spring
• Gingerbread house making programs in the winter
• Annual Mother’s Day visit from real live llamas!
• Teen Room: Open to students in grades 7-12. The Teen Room is not a quiet area of the library.
• Computer Workstations: Library cardholders may use workstations in the library’s Computer Center. Workstations not only provide Internet access, but also have a number of productivity software such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
• Computer Classes: Regularly scheduled computer classes for different skill levels will help to keep your knowledge up to date. Watch the library’s website (SSPL.org) or social media accounts for schedule and registration information.
• Meeting Rooms: Nonprofit organizations in the library’s service area may apply online to use library meeting rooms at no charge.
• Premium Online Content: Tired of being unsure about the quality of information returned from search engines on the Internet? Our website, SSPL.org is a portal to a number of reliable, content-rich online databases for homework, research, reading suggestions and entrepreneurship.
• SALON:
Southern Adirondack Library On-Demand (Salon.sspl.org) is your online home for downloadable digital audiobooks. Library cardholders may browse and download audiobooks for listening on your home computer or your personal portable player.
• The Saratoga Room:
Our special collection focusing on books and other printed Saratogiana is a must stop for visitors, newcomers, and researchers hoping to learn more about Saratoga Springs’ rich and colorful history.
• Summer Reading Program: Our young people’s programs are designed to help school kids maintain their reading skills over the summer break, while those for adults help to celebrate a lifelong love of the written word.
• SaratogaREADS!
SaratogaREADS! has an uncomplicated mission: to invite all members of the Saratoga Springs community to participate in a shared reading experience, and to take part in conversations and events inspired by our annual reading selections. A main selection and Junior Companion title are announced in the Winter, and programs and discussions generally take place between February and April each year.
• Outreach Services: Being homebound doesn’t have to mean missing out on library service. Residents of our service area who are temporarily or permanently unable to travel to the library may qualify to receive visits from a member of the library’s staff who will deliver books and other materials directly to their door.
• Literacy Services:
The library provides private and small group instruction by trained volunteers to those wishing to improve their English reading, writing and speaking skills.
• Friends Book Shop:
Friends of the Saratoga Springs Public Library operates this used book store inside the library. Here you’ll find some of the best book bargains around, and proceeds of sales support library programs and services.

Originally settled in 1771 and incorporated in 1788, it has a rich history and many strong community organizations. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake is located in southern Saratoga County neighboring the towns of Malta, Clifton Park, Glenville, Ballston Spa and Charlton. It celebrates its farming and rural heritage by preserving open space, further developing park land and supporting local farmers’ markets, farm stands and orchard shops. Today, the approximately 11,000 residents enjoy an outstanding quality of life offered by our highly regarded school systems, Veterans Bike Path, our recreational parks, and beautiful Ballston Lake. The community spirit in this area is epitomized by the annual Burnt Hills Flag Day Parade.

Tucked in the southwest corner of Saratoga County and easily accessible from I-87 and I-90, you’ll be charmed by Charlton’s rural character, historic hamlets, and scenic landscapes. Boasting agriculture as its main industry, a drive or bike tour through Charlton’s rolling hills reveals dairy and horse farms, orchards and farm stands just around the bend. Glimpses of the past abound: in the Historical Society’s museum and one-room schoolhouse, the old general store, and lively Tavern—its former building serving as a stagecoach stop in 1787. Known for its hardy settlers and once-prolific grist mills along the Alplaus Creek, Charlton’s friendly community welcomes visitors to explore its proud heritage.

The Town of Greenfield is located minutes north of Saratoga Springs and is the Capital Region’s best kept secret. With a population of 8,200 spread out over 41,000 forest and stream covered acres; residents have plenty of room to breathe. It’s a peaceful place where families hold tight to small town pride and still live on roads named after their ancestors. Greenfield is content being the quiet neighbor with the stone wall in front and the vegetable garden out back. It’s a wonderful place to relax, raise a family and walk the dog. Country living in the 21st century.

Centrally located between Saratoga Springs and points west, the Town of Milton, with its comfortable, community feel is big enough to offer everything you need, yet small enough to know your neighbors! Milton was established in 1792 and consists of 22,000 acres. It is centrally located in Saratoga County, with the Kayaderosseras Creek; a picturesque, historic, and NYS designated prime trout stream, winding its way from the Northwest to the Southeast corner, where it flows through the Village of Ballston Spa and continues to Saratoga Lake.

The charming Village of Round Lake is profoundly tied to its rich cultural past, and still boasts the “campground” feel with its small, close lots. Residences and other structures are arranged in concentric circles radiating from the Round Lake Auditorium, with narrow streets and pedestrian walkways. This creates a hub and spoke pattern – and the secret to “village life” – you know your neighbors! Shows and events highlighting art, crafts and antiques are regularly held on Village grounds and organ and musical concerts are still given in the Round Lake Auditorium.
The Round Lake Library, though small, continues operation and maintains many books pertaining to Victoriana and Victorian architecture, being particularly useful to those seeking restoration information. Visit the Village website: roundlakevillage.org.

The Town of Saratoga has a rich history and a current environment that is attractive to residential, commercial, and agricultural pursuits. It is located in the eastern portion of the County bordering the Hudson River on the East, Saratoga Lake and the City of Saratoga Springs on the West. It was originally a district within Albany County and subsequently in 1791 became one of the four mother towns of Saratoga County. The first European settlers arrived in the town in 1688.

Centrally located between Saratoga Springs and Clifton Park this beautiful and historic community is known as “The Site of the Turning Point of the American Revolution.”
The Battle of Freeman’s Farm and the Battle of Bemis Heights were fought here in 1777, paving the way for freedom, and setting the stage for settlement of this community along the banks of the mighty and noble, (but calm) Hudson River. Established in 1788, Stillwater, is one of oldest towns along the Champlain-Hudson corridor. Stillwater offers the “best of everything.” We are a growing community with an excellent school system, friendly neighborhoods, numerous historical sites, trails, parks and of course, Brown’s Beach!

In 1684, Colonel Peter Schuyler, great uncle of General Schuyler, and six partners, obtained title to the Schuyler Patent, an area of over 168,000 acres that extended roughly 6 miles each side of the Hudson River. The Battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the Revolutionary War, was fought on the lands presently occupied by the Village of Victory and the Village of Schuylerville. In the years following the war, flour mills, linen mills, paper mills and sawmills were constructed as well as schools, churches, and businesses.
The Saratoga Battle Monument occupies a prominent place in the northwest portion of the village.
The Victory Mill, which began operating in 1846, made 1.8 million yards of cotton cloth per year. In 1850, it employed 160 men and 209 women. Several companies owned and operated the facility over the years and unfortunately ended up closing its doors in 2000. Soon the building will be redeveloped for residential housing.

Easily accessed from Exits 15 or 16, close to everything . . . yet a destination on its own! Wilton has a lot to offer with its shopping areas, good schools, proximity to Saratoga Springs and its commitment to children, recreation and the various ongoing “quality of life” projects in process. It truly is a great place to live.

Summer Camp at Saratoga Arts extends our mission of cultivating a vibrant art community. Students learn from professional teaching artists who bring art history, technique, and appreciation to all ages while having fun.
Visual Arts programs are geared to our youngest “mighty mites” (ages 5-9) and our slightly older students (ages 10 -14) who will work with the teaching artist on a theme during the week. The week’s theme may take them through the historical evolution of a technique, may offer them a deeper dive into a particular genre, or may introduce them to less familiar worldwide art.
Our Teen Studios for ages 13 – 18 are geared toward young artists who are interested in pushing their art to a new level. Each week-long studio session focuses on a genre from painting or drawing to comics and collage.
Young artists have access to Congress Park and to our Galleries for added inspiration and enjoyment during their sessions.
Our staff is dedicated to supporting each budding artist, nurturing their learning, respecting their approaches, and helping them experience the joy of art. Physical and emotional safety is a priority for each team member.
Summer 2023 week-long camps run from June 26 – September 1.
Registration available at www.saratoga-arts.org/education

Get out on the lake and Learn to Row this summer with SARATOGA ROWING ASSOCIATION!
We have introductory camp options for ages 12-17.
Our Middle School Learn to Row Camp for rising 7th & 8th graders features two weeks of gaining water skills and fitness while enjoying the outdoors and making friends! The camp concludes with a team-wide race on Fish Creek which parents and fans can spectate from a charter boat. Middle School sessions run Monday-Friday from 9 AM-12 Noon. Each session is limited to 30.
You may attend more than one session and each session will build on the next. Start with LTR#1 and then continue with LTR #2/3. Rowers can take one, two or three sessions to build on the skills learned in previous sessions. You must take LTR #1 2023 before signing up for LTR #2/3.
The High School Learn to Row Camp (or Varsity Try-Out Camp) is for competitive minded athletes entering grades 9-12. Come out on the water and discover this exciting racing sport! You will learn the rowing stroke, gain fitness and conditioning, and taste the thrill of side by side competition in boats with up to 8 teammates.
Rowing is also an excellent crossover sport, so if you’re looking for a change, a new sport for your off season, or just a new activity and community, this could be a great fit for you!
High School sessions run Monday-Friday 9 -11:30 AM, and you may sign up for multiple sessions (highly encouraged if you plan to join the competitive varsity squad in the fall).

In today’s over-structured world where kids spend a big part of their days looking at electronics, the one thing most grade school parents agree on is when school is out, they want their kids out… in the great outdoors. When summer comes, the pressure is on for parents to adequately entertain them without overscheduling or breaking the bank. The Town of Greenfield’s summer day camp is a perfect solution, with its morning-only format and a full array of traditional activities that promise to leave children exhausted and happy.
Campers spend 8:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. at the Maple Avenue Middle School, at 515 Maple Avenue in Saratoga Springs. Activities include rotating stations of fun, featuring such things as obstacle courses, hiking, Taekwondo, arts and crafts, as well as many organized games and sports like soccer, flag football, kickball and more. Campers participate in themed days like “Super Hero” and “Hat” Day and painting, tiedying and rock climbing. They receive weekly visits from Uncharted Wild LLC to encounter live wild animals, regularly scheduled “Water Days” for splashing around and even the chance to pal around with some local llamas. Rainy day activities bring the children inside to the school’s gymnasium and cafeteria. Fridays
end each week on a sweet note with treats from ice cream trucks and Stewart’s Shops.
“Our ever-changing schedule will send kids home exhausted and dirty from an action-packed morning at camp with friends,” said Town of Greenfield Recreation Director Rebecca Sewell. Students ages 5 to 14 are welcome and will be supervised with a 2:10 counselor/camper ratio. The camp features 25 trained camp counselors, most of whom once attended this camp themselves. Parents can choose early drop off for an additional cost and all students are eligible for the town’s Free Lunch Program, daily on-site and during camp. Signups open in March to Town of Greenfield residents, and in April open to the public. More information can be found by calling Rebecca Sewell at 518428-2267 or visiting www.greenfieldny.org. Scholarships are available. The Town of Greenfield is home to 8,200 residents in Greenfield, Porter Corners and Middle Grove. It spans more than 41,000 acres of land bordering the Adirondacks. Other summer activities sponsored by the Town of Greenfield include golf and tennis camps and a PGA Junior golf league at the town’s Brookhaven Park and Golf Course in Porter Corners.

Victorian homes are loaded with lots of detailed woodwork and odd-shaped spaces, so to the modern family, they tend to feel more regal, than comfortable, more elegant, than easy to live in. When Colleen Coleman, Principal Interior Designer of CMC Design Studio LLC, was brought in as the interior
designer on the remodel project in 2018, substantial reconstruction on the property had already been underway by Courtney Enterprises, as directed by the homeowner’s architect, Phinney Design Group.
“The architects did a beautiful job redesigning the space. My job was to take those spaces and bring them back to life,” she said.
Originally built in 1883, the now six-bedroom, five-bath, 4,439 sq. ft. home has been preserved in a way that makes sense for Colleen’s clients, John and Michelle.
“In listening to my clients and working through what is important to them, they are the ones who design their spaces, I am the one who facilitates their dream into a reality!”
Previous owners had used the building as both a private residence and a dentist’s office. Two additions were built on in the early 1900s, moving the kitchen each time.
Now, the kitchen has been returned to the center of the house, making it convenient for entertaining, as is the impressive butler’s pantry that leads up to it, housing Michelle’s large collection of dishware.
Queen Victoria herself would’ve likely approved of the Oval Room Blue paint chosen for the cabinetry, a hue selected from the Farrow & Ball Collection.
It’s a color Colleen knew her clients would appreciate, as is the library ladder that Michelle dreamed of installing in her kitchen one day.
“It was a simple request that set the tone for the whole kitchen,” said Colleen.
“The ladder can be easily rolled to reach the high storage or display cabinets, even down the hallway to the den where an additional rail was installed!”
To retain the essence of a Victorian kitchen, the modern refrigerator was hidden behind panels, disguised as French cabinet doors with three lower drawers.
Throughout the first floor of this threestory home, the ceilings take center stage. In the kitchen, a metal beam is hidden within a circular display of coffers. Colleen created the ceiling detail by combining three different heights of beams to create a sphere unbroken above the semi-formal dining area of the home.
The substantial brass light fixture above the table carries the eye upward without appearing too heavy or impeding the view of the garden beyond.
Historical homes are filled with the history of past occupants.
Colleen played off some of these historical elements, as in the new vent hood above the kitchen range, which mirrors the lines of the vintage fireplace insert in the semiformal dining area.
The kitchen windows were designed by Colleen and manufactured by Marvin Windows. By replicating the ratio of the historical parlor windows, they appear as if they are original to the home, accurately enough to have been approved by the Design Review Commission of the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation. Using the same ratio, Colleen designed the upper glass fronted kitchen cabinet and butler pantry doors.
They also synchronize with the windows in the game room. Here, Colleen secured an authentic gaming table which once resided at the Saratoga Casino, taking center stage while being surrounded by chairs that will keep you playing for hours!
A watercolor of the Casino (not shown), purchased at Minnie Bolster’s estate sale, overlooks the table that once dwelt within.
The wonderfully refurbished wainscot, originally a dark oak, was dismantled by the builders and skillfully remastered within the kitchen and butler’s pantry (as were the columns framing the fireplace in the den). They fit so naturally into their new location, it’s as if they’d always been there.
The golden rule to a historical renovation is to make mindful choices.
When working in a home that’s been changed significantly by past inhabitants, a remodel can often turn into a "remuddle.” Rather than trying to erase the past, Colleen capitalized on the elements each owner brought to the home.
The once golden-topped, faux-painted Corinthian columns were painted white instead of being removed altogether. Likewise, the layers of crown molding were painted to blend in with the tray ceilings (that were added to incorporate plumbing and electrical components), allowing your eye to focus on the updated light fixtures surrounded quietly by the home’s oldworld charm.
Also in the parlor, the soothing symmetry of the ceiling is accentuated by the gracefully installed custom drapery and cornice boards. Majestically, they weave in and out of the window seat area, reflecting the columns at the entry to the room.
In the adjoining music room, the cornice boards gently move to the sound of a symphony being played. Colleen said she found inspiration in researching famous opera houses throughout the country and in Europe.
Color and pattern have a huge part to play in the front stairway, where the large, modern floral printed wallcovering by Thibaut carries in the darker greens and charcoals from the exterior of the home. It also serves to lighten up the entry in an effort to retain the original dark oak, patinaed wainscot and staircase.
Without sacrificing its past, this Victorian is now a very personal reflection of the current homeowners.
“It was very dark. It had a neat look, but, boy, was it dark! We were concerned that even after the renovation, the Victorian wasn't going to feel like a comfy, cozy home," said John.
"With all the design choices that Colleen helped with, the feel has totally changed - it has become a very comfortable and beautiful home."
