Sharing the Love

Church Life

Duncan Witte

The Bible has important lessons for us regarding stewardship of our time, talents, and treasures. Scripture can teach us how we should take care of the earth, one another, our church, and ourselves. Three key aspects of stewardship include:

The world and everything in it belong to God.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established in upon the waters. Psalm 24:1‐2 (NIV)

We are the stewards of everything in God’s world. God created each of us, and charged us with taking care of His creation, especially including taking care of one another.

“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.” John 3:10‐11

God has given each of us many gifts, both spiritual and temporal. We have the opportunity to use those gifts in stewardship and service to others, which helps us to focus on knowing and following God’s plans for us.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19‐20

Each of us has time, talents, and treasure that we can dedicate to God’s purpose. All of these are needed. All can make a difference. All contribute to Sharing the Love.

Organization Meeting for November Haiti Trip If you are interested in going to Haiti with Sardis November 7‐14, please stay after the 11:00 service on June 17 to help begin planning. We will gather in the small dining room for about 45 minutes. If you are interested in going but cannot come to the meeting, please email presslygilbert@gmail.com so we can put you on our contact list for further information.

Room In The Inn: Thank You, Sardis!

Thanks to over 200 volunteers, Room In The Inn at Sardis was able to provide meals and a warm bed 465 times during the 2017‐2018 season! We were able to host children 61 times, adult females 205 times, adult males 144 times, and transgender females six times. Eleven drivers transported the neighbors to and from Sardis House and Urban Ministries, nine team leaders and their teams of approximately 12 volunteers per night provided hospitality, and 33 groups and individuals prepared and served meals and lunches to our grateful neighbors, who would have otherwise been on the streets or under a bridge, cold and hungry. If you were a part of this ministry, our neighbors thank you and Urban Ministries thanks you. Let’s keep the spirit of RITI going all through the year with prayers for our neighbors’ safety and well‐being, and we will see you again in December!

Lo and Bill Simon Read at Rama Road Elementary School

Lo Simon visited with the Rama students in Sardis’ afterschool tutoring program to share books she has authored. Lo and her husband, Bill, have recently rejoined Sardis. The students enjoyed her and her books. Every student was given copies of the books she read. Thank you, Lo and Bill, for sharing your time and talent with the students at Rama Road Elementary!

Sardis Weekday School Happenings! SWS is planning to open a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class to the preschool program. The TK class will begin with the 2018‐2019 school year. This class will be offered Monday‐Friday from 9‐1 for students who did not make the kindergarten cutoff date (September‐December). These students will be academically ready for more advanced skills than their 4‐year‐old peers. Their social skills are also more mature and allow for higher level social games and play. TK is also appropriate for students who are kindergarten age but may benefit from another year to develop academic and social skills. TK will be faster paced than a regular 4 year old program. Students in this program will receive a modified kindergarten curriculum (Learning Without Tears) that is balanced with age‐appropriate activities.
