The importance of Teaching Pronunciation As teachers we often tend to focus on the teaching of grammar and new vocabulary rather than pronunciation. If we are starting with basic level students whether they are young or older we must encourage them to speak, not only to speak but to actually say the words correctly. Nowadays, we need to make sure that students are going to be able to communicate properly not only by writing well but also by being able to communicate verbally. Many teachers need to understand that just teaching grammar isn’t going to get the students to speak a different language. A student can have perfect grammar that if they can’t communicate verbally is like they don’t really know another language.
As teachers we have to find different ways to entertain students no matter about their age. Students need to feel identified with the activities so they can actually learn. Is like having fun while they learn. There are a lot of ways that we can introduce students to pronunciation in a way that they will feel comfortable and as teachers we can teachers we can introduce a little bit of reading, writing, and of course listening and speaking. Some examples can be with flashcards, doing competitive games in groups (have a price!), doing Pictionary, games with minimal pairs, dialogues. I could go on for a longer time naming different activities. Also, an important step as a teacher is to be able to correct students or provide feedback when they are mispronouncing the words. If we tell a particular students that they are mispronouncing a word is like telling them “Please do not participate anymore!” Be very careful when correcting students. A good tip is when you hear a student say a word incorrectly say the word correctly to the rest of the students, and have them repeat it.
There are students who are afraid to speak in front of their classmates because they feel that if the mispronounce a word the students will make fun of them. Students need to feel encourage because if they do not learn properly they will not be able to communicate verbally, therefore, it is going to be harder for them to find a job. They will get through a written test at an interview but they will Always give positive feedback, even though the student not be able to understand the questions nor communicate and express might not be pronouncing correctly there are different ways in which themselves. you can correct them and say positive words that will encourage the How can we encourage students to speak in English? There student to keep participating. Students can also evaluate their are many different ways that students can practice their pronunciation performance in class, they can analyze how much effort they are within the classroom. The teacher can say the target words, making the putting in. mouth positions for the correct sounds and have the students repeat If a teacher includes all of these in their classes, students them several times so they can feel comfortable with them. This gets will most absolutely learn English or any other language in a proper them used to pronouncing the words correctly. way, teachers need to remember that not only writing is important Teaching the mouth position of each sound is very important but also speaking and listening so students can become fluent in a because that will bring visibility to the students on how they are going language.By: Sarita Arguello Aguilera. to pronounce a word correctly. Therefore, it is also important that the teacher pronounces the words/sounds correctly. If by any chance the teacher has a little bit of trouble getting a particular sound correct, there is no need to panic. Since fortunately we are in a world that has a lot of technology, teachers can easily find websites that show the different mouth position for all of the vowels as well as the consonants. The teacher can even practice before walking into class or show the videos by a projector. Students can even bring a mirror and see themselves to make sure they are doing it correctly. Moving forward with the activities, when we introduce activities we need to make sure that we are focusing on an age and level so that students can identify themselves in the activity, do not get References bored or neither do they frustrate because the activity is extremely hard. : Reid. J.M. (1993). Teaching ESL Writing. New Jersey, U.S. : Pentice Hall According to Reid (1993), the communicative competence strongly believes that the material in a language classroom should be as authentic as possible.
