LOCATION. SOURCE. The Dorset Count(r)yside as a source of inspiration: -relatively- close to one of the urban cores of the United Kingdom is a source of scattered sheds, barns and feeds. Be it neatly tucked away between the rolling hills or prominently perched along the main road, it soon becomes clear there is a local language to the cladding of these structures. Planks. Boards. Locally sourced material upon a frame. The idea of sheds and barns encouraged an inquiry into tobacco drying practices in the Americas. Cattle feeds must ventilate. Hay sheds must ventilate. Tobacco barns must ventilate. Wind ventilates.

FUNCTION. PURPOSE. FORM. The primary purpose of this cladding method is ventilation and protection from the elements. Logistically these members also function as a barrier keeping cattle fenced in and unwanted visitors out.
Standard timber frame construction is cladded with boards of equal width at equal spacing or butted together. These members are then most commonly nailed to the supporting frame at two points.
Drawing from the Tobacco barn typology, which responds to seasonal drying needs through pivotting boards, considerations were made regarding the location of a such a pivot point in relation to the supporting frame. By introducing a pivot point in the middle of the board for example, one could create dramatic changes through minimal force exertion. A pivot nearer to the top of the board however, would allow for unobstructed access to(or through) the boards in question. This may be useful when the space directly behind the boards would need to be occupied.
YORKSHIRE BOARDING. “Vertical wooden planks not butted together used as exterior cladding on buildings used a animal accommodation. Provides a wind break and is well ventilated.” - from Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary
HISTORY. RESEARCH. “In parts of the country – particularly in the South East, East of England and the western part of the West Midlands – timber frames were often clad in horizontally fixed weatherboarding. Hand-sawn hardwood boarding is now rarely found, as machine-sawn softwood was increasingly used from the late 18th century. Weatherboarding is either applied to a whole building (most commonly in regions in the South East and the southern part of the East of England) or to the upper portions of sidewalls (a common use in the West Midlands).Vertical boarding is mainly found in the South East. This had cover strips to prevent the ingress of rain; surviving examples date from the late 19th century. Hitand-miss timber boarding, sometimes known as Yorkshire boarding, has been widely in use as cladding since the 1970s, since it provides good ventilation and meets modern animal welfare requirements” - from English Heritage’s Historic Farmsteads Preliminary Character Statement South West

DISTILLING THE INTENTION.
In its purest most simplified form the aim of this structure should be an aletrable response to ventilation needs. Responding to this need should be dependent upon one variable(interchangable) piece. How this piece operates and is generated is put forth through a combination of digital and physical modeling and research.

PRELIMINARY EXPLORATIONS.
The images above are a combination of preliminiary design explorations. These growing from pivot points to axes of rotation and iterations thereof. Parallel inquiries were made into the the generation of curves, the possibility for join(t)ing the pieces together as well as the technical workings of a camshaft.

TANGENTIAL MATH. Camshafts for variable rotations on a single pivot point. Extrapolating from this theory allows you to create curves that define angle at which a member will fan out. Simple mathematics allows for a calculation that can later be translated into Grasshopper iterations.

CLIMATE. POTENTIAL.
Data must come from somewhere. As a hypothetical, points of wind strength were collected from windroses for this area of Dorset. These were used to define the curves for the prototype and could potentially guide decisions for buildings with four faces. This hypothesis could be explored further in future projects as not enough data was collected to make accurate assumptions in this case.

PARAMETRIZATION. SEQUENCE. There are several variable built into the Grasshopper definition controlling the curves that generate the winding wall. The width, height and spacing between boards can be controlled as well as the location of the pivot point. The curve reoresenting the camshaft is generated from a set of points collected from windroses and manipulated through a set of sliders. The location of this curve in relation to the frame on the x,y and z plane are all successfully manipulable through the defnition.

PRODUCTION. ASSEMBLY.
Considerate of the sheer magnitute of the prototype -at 4 meters wide-, assembly was coordinated for the Big Shed. This drove a construction plan based on the production of a complete kit of parts in the workshop and assembly completely limited to the Big Shed. *Damage control had to occur with regards to the holes for the -axis of rotation- rod. These were drilled beforehand and since the wood was still very green they needed a second round of drilling upon assembly.
