MATERIAL SOURCING ANALYSIS __ SARINA ADELLE DA COSTA GOMEZ

Student Lodge 3 is defined by its materiality and the choices the team has made to pursue the low cost ambitions with regards to that materiality. Inspired by what was salvage dismantling the former caretaker's house and encouraged by the steel and aluminum items received from the demolition of the Rampisham BBC Radio transmission site, Student Lodge 3 was constantly designed with re-use and recombination in mind. The following diagrams will itemize Student Lodge 3 as comprehensively as possible. Besides being an interesting way of quantifying the design decisions, this approach is a way for us to come full circle. As we started with inventories of windowpanes and aluminium ducting collected, drawn and registered, we now inventory all the beams, membranes and screws that hold together the new student accommodation.

The team also identified early on that we wanted to stay as local as possible when sourcing the materials for the building, from a sustainable as well as a financially responsible perspective. It soon became clear from local distributors of many products however, that it would be quicker and/or cheaper to go directly to their suppliers in some cases. As with any building project, the ambitions in one realm collided with the schedule and financial logistics of the project as a whole, and decisions were made accordingly. Noteworthy is that most “standard building supplies were readily availble within the distance radius the Team had set for itself [within 30 miles of site] The specialized items and larger scale objects tended to be sourced from farther North. Another challenger the Team faced was receiving elements of the building without knowing where or how they were going to be incorporated efficiently and effectively. In some cases this also meant rethinking the purchasing strategy. For example, in the case of the insulation, there was continuous debate on the potentials of Polyfloss against its timeconsuming production versus using the barasive salvaged insulation of the significantly more expensive Supaloft Green. This material give and take is directly reflected in the fact that there are 5-6 different types of insulation lining the building.
