The Campus and Location Brisbane is known for its multicultural society, warm sunny climate, beautiful beaches, low crime rate, friendly people and lower cost of living than the other state capital cities of Melbourne and Sydney. James Cook University Brisbane (JCU Brisbane) is housed in a modern high rise building, surrounded by skyscrapers and located in the Central Business District (CBD) on Queen Street. Within walking distance is the riverfront, Queen Street shopping mall, city library and the many shops, parks and cafés that our beautiful city has to offer. The campus is easily accessible via the many forms of public transport which is heavily discounted to students.
Sense of Family JCU Brisbane is renowned for its friendliness and sense of family. You will enjoy a supportive study environment, highly qualified lecturers with industry experience and a welcoming atmosphere that emphasises personal contact between students and staff.
Trimester System Our normal Brisbane academic calendar caters for three study periods (or trimesters) beginning in March, July and November. This arrangement allows students to typically complete more subjects per year than a standard semester program operating at many other Australian universities. JCU Brisbane is the only JCU campus in Australia to operate a trimester model.
Student Resource Centre The Student Resource Centre is managed by a team of dedicated staff whose main goal is to provide JCU Brisbane students with the necessary support for a successful transition to university life. From day one, students can look forward to various activities and workshops to help build an understanding of the Australian education system. The centre is located on level 2, where students can access library and research materials, computers and other resources.
Student Mentor Program The Student Mentor Program was implemented in July 2009 to help new students adapt to university life and be a part of the JCU Brisbane community. This program matches a student (mentee) with a mentor, who is a current student wanting to share his/her knowledge and experiences. The mentor process begins each trimester when students are matched according to their field of study or discipline. This program is facilitated by the Mentor Coordinator and Student Mentors and is available to both new and current students.
Language And Learning Centre The Language and Learning Centre is staffed by qualified and experienced Learning
Advisers who work with students to give practical advice and strategies to master the English academic language skills needed to study successfully in an Australian university. Learning Advisers work with students from all programs and at all levels to help improve academic language skills. So if you are having difficulty adjusting to the academic requirements of tertiary study, or if you are a high achieving student who is aiming for excellence, our Learning Advisers can help you. Learning Advisers also work closely with the Faculty to ensure that the help you get is targeted to your studies. The Language and Learning Centre offers a drop-in service, one-to-one appointments and small group workshops which are advertised regularly. This means that you have many opportunities to get the information, advice and assistance you need.
Student Council The JCU Brisbane Student Council is a team of enthusiastic and self-motivated students who aim to build a bridge of communication between students and JCU Brisbane staff by representing the students in all matters and concerns that may affect them within the university environment.
"Out of the four JCU campuses, I opted for the Brisbane campus because it is the only campus which provides an internship program that would help me gain technical and managerial skills and also more industrial knowledge. The friendly environment and the location of the Brisbane campus makes one feel at home. The positive response from the lecturers, the Joblinx team and competition among students encourages me to work hard throughout my course." Rishi Vakharia, India Master of Information Technology Master of business Administration Student
The Student Council's mission is to be the voice and to act on behalf of all JCU Brisbane students for education that is accessible, equitable and free from discrimination; to provide discussion and debates that are beneficial to improving the campus’s facilities and services; and to promote educational, social, cultural and recreational student activities through regular events.
DEAN'S ACADEMIC AWARD Starting November 2012 all newly enrolled students will be able to compete for the Dean's Academic Award. This award program is of monetary value and is specifically designed for all students enrolling into our Brisbane programs from November 2012 onwards. The Dean’s Academic Awards will give all students the opportunity to improve their Grade Point Average (GPA) throughout their stay at JCU Brisbane and ultimately the possibility to compete for a JCU university medal.
Employment and Careers Services - through Joblinx Joblinx is a privately-owned recruitment agency, offering JCU Brisbane students a wide range of services and training to enhance their employability skills and expertise. Co-located at the Brisbane campus, Joblinx services include assisting students with finding part-time, casual and graduate employment, as well as providing training, professional development and work experience programs.
"Choosing a foreign country to continue our studies has a lot of benefits. On one hand it provides self-confidence, better understanding of cultural diversity, overall way of thinking, discoveries of global contexts and new methods of studying. It also provides challenges, friendships and professional background information for job applications. On the other hand, the “unknown” can be confusing, like getting used to different education and assessment standards. Thankfully, JCU Brisbane offers the support when you need it. The Student Resource Centre (SRC) and the Language and Learning Centre (LLC) aim to provide students with adequate help for their successful studies. I found their workshops, assignment checking sessions and enthusiastic help extremely useful. The SRC and LLC facilitate professional as well as personal development. I would like to say thank you to all the staff for their support." Eszter KISS, Hungary Master of International Tourism and Hospitality Management student

Why is it important? Employers want confident graduates who can demonstrate through their studies that they have the knowledge, skills and professional experience to work in a highly globalised, complex world. Business graduates who undertake industry-related experiences as part of their degree are in high demand. Graduates who have worked on projects with public or private organisations, are coached by executives, or have worked as interns in companies significantly increase their employment prospects. The James Cook University degree is built around providing its students with as many work-integrated learning experiences as possible.
WIL At JCU Brisbane WIL at JCU Brisbane is maximised through using a range of activities and experiences to expose you to a variety of authentic industry-related situations. These can be anything from a professional internship or working in a group on a community project, through to visiting an Australian business or having corporate leaders work with you in the classroom. The scope and variety of real-life learning experiences is limitless and JCU Brisbane ensures you are engaging with industry at every level of your degree. Participating in work-integrated learning will help you, as a student, make connections between classroom theory and workplace practice. It will give you insights into your chosen occupation, improve your understanding of the real world of business and enhance your international employment opportunities.
Bachelor of Business (Internship)
Masters Degree (MBA Internship) In the Masters degree there are three subjects available that will allow you to engage with business and the community: the Professional Internship subject, the Community Project subject or the Business Plan subject. The Professional Internship allows you an opportunity to apply the theory you have learnt in the classroom to the real-world of business. In this subject you will work in a professional company in a role that suits your career aspirations and degree qualification. In the Community Project or Business Plan subjects you will be able to interact with clients in solving organisational issues, developing new business projects or redefining how the client’s business could be better managed. These Masters level subjects are a perfect culmination of the degree experience and prepare JCU Brisbane students for graduation and employment.
WIL in all Degrees In all JCU Brisbane degrees WIL experiences occur in different subjects and form part of the degree structure. For example, some subjects include site visits to famous companies, corporate executives are invited onto the campus to discuss current business issues, real-world projects are in-sourced for students to work on, and students can be given the opportunity to pitch business ideas to entrepreneurs.
"My studies at JCU Brisbane got me to recognise and explore a wide range of possibilities that I never expected. I took the opportunity to complete the Professional Internship subject and am currently working on an interesting project with my host employer. This definitely adds substantial value to my degree and provides me with new experiences. Working in a professional environment in a foreign country certainly improves one's skills above and beyond theoretical academic studies." Gerd August, Germany Master of business Administration Graduate
WIL is central to your learning at JCU Brisbane and you can be assured of a rich, industry-related learning experience that will set you up for life.
"JCU Brisbane has not only provided me with theoretical knowledge in my fields of interest, but has also equipped me with practical experience in the real business world. The Professional Internship subject provides an opportunity for graduates to have different exposures and improve their employability before participating in the dynamic business world. I applied for an internship in order to gain hands-on experience before graduating from JCU Brisbane and completed my internship with Energy Skills Queensland. The Professional Internship subject enabled me to work with industry professionals and explore various working approaches in the sector I am passionate about. It has also helped me develop my organisational and project management skills.
In the Bachelor of Business you may be able to participate in the Professional Experience subject which will see you working in a professional office environment learning from people in that company. This is a unique opportunity for international students to work in an Australian company and get credit toward their degree.

OVERVIEW The JCU Diploma of Business provides a flexible opportunity for international students to make the transition from secondary school into undergraduate studies. This program allows students who are not eligible to enrol directly into an undergraduate program to achieve a quality Australian higher education through a highly regarded university. Australian education has different teaching styles and different learning expectations. These differences of culture, language and educational systems experienced by international students can be, at times, challenging. As such, students can require particular assistance. The diploma course is designed especially to ease students into the Australian way of study and cultural life offering them additional levels of teaching and personal support. The Diploma of Business is taken as an alternative to the first year of the Bachelor of Business program when a student’s background indicates the need for extended teaching and learning support to progress in the Australian educational system. Students receive more class time than the regular bachelor program. Taking this program does not extend the duration of the degree; the diploma plus degree package can still be completed within three (3) years.
COURSE STRUCTURE This Diploma of Business consists of eight (8) subjects which include essential skills in effective writing, speaking and mathematics. With this structure, the university diploma is a very effective pathway to university Bachelor degrees for many international students.
ADVANCED STANDING CREDIT INTO DIPLOMA JCU recognises advanced standing credit for equivalent studies at an equivalent level from recognised Australian or overseas institutions. The credit is determined after receipt of application for the diploma. The maximum advanced standing credit available into the Diploma of Business is two specified core subjects.
ADVANCED STANDING CREDIT FROM DIPLOMA INTO BACHELOR Completion of the diploma gains advanced standing for eight (8) subjects credit towards the Bachelor of Business,* with a single or double major in:
• Hospitality & Tourism Management • International Business • Management • Marketing • Sports and Events Management - or a single major in • Accounting
CAREER OUTCOMES Bachelor of Business graduates enjoy employment opportunities in management, marketing, human resource management, accounting, finance, tourism, and hospitality. Graduates of the Bachelor of Business have gained important roles in government and commercial organisations within Australia and their home nations.
"JCU Brisbane gave me the opportunity to change my life... I was scared to start this new experience but I found people that helped me from the very first day. The thing that I really appreciate is the help that the lecturers give to their students. For example, if I have trouble understanding the lecture or have an issue with an assignment I can go directly to the lecturer and they will dedicate time to make sure I understand and find the best solution. Because we are an international campus and English is our second language, the staff are ready to give us extra support. For example, I attended various workshops held by the Student Resource Centre. Another service I found very helpful was Joblinx. I attended their work preparation training where they helped me with my resume and I learned to be more confident when applying for jobs. They even helped me to find my current part time job!" Stefania Natali, Italy Diploma of Business Student

By participating in this program I received guidance and I also gained a new friend. It has exceeded my expectations, which is why I decided to become a mentor myself. The role of a mentor provides me the opportunity to develop leadership and management skills, improve my communication and build on my interpersonal skills. All these are required for successful performance in management positions, which is where I aim to be in the long run. With the help and support of Joblinx, I have also landed a position with a large national membership organisation, where I am currently working part time as an Event Management/Marketing Coordinator. My final internship subject will be incorporated into the role and once I have completed my internship, I will be employed full time. I am truly enjoying my work and looking forward to the new challenges this position will bring in the future. The MITHM program at JCU Brisbane has provided me with considerable academic knowledge, helped jump start my career and enriched me with an overall positive and enjoyable experience."

"I am an average student, nothing exceptional. However, the staff at JCU Brisbane kept us motivated during the course as they were all very friendly and flexible. It was a joyful experience at JCU Brisbane. The university has an Employment and Careers department (Joblinx), which is managed by extremely professional and experienced staff. They gave me lots of advice and helped me address areas to improve, such as interview techniques and how to ‘sell' my skills and talents to an employer. Joblinx placed me at Mincom (the market leader in asset management software) as a Software Engineer. I was able to utilise the skills and knowledge gained through my studies and apply them to many projects. For example, I was able to work on the latest Mincom product - Ellipse 8.2. During my work experience I was also able to expand my practical skills in technologies such as Java, Flex, Oracle, Cloud computing and much more! I am really grateful to all the extremely qualified staff at JCU Brisbane and all the opportunities and support given to me." The University has a variety of assessment methods that apply to its courses. These include examinations, essays, oral presentations, group projects, assignments, quizzes, practical examinations, placements, laboratory reports, class participation, theses and workshops. MODE OF DELIVERY All programs and subjects are timetabled over each Trimester. Students on study visas must attend each Trimester with a study load of three (3) subjects minimum. All conditions of attendance and study can be found on the JCU Website Student Policies at www.jcu.edu.au/policy/students/index.htm ESOS Act and Tuition Protection Service As a provider of education services to international students in Australia, James Cook University is required to comply with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (The National Code). The ESOS legislation and National Code specify minimum standards for the delivery of courses to students in Australia studying on a student visa and regulate what information must be given to existing and prospective international students, what support must be provided to existing students, what records are kept and what information is to be given to government agencies about international students. For more information visit the ESOS Act webpage. JCU’s Tuition Fee Policy for International Students applies to overseas students who do not commence their studies with JCU, or withdraw before their course is completed. The Policy sets out the circumstances in which a student is entitled to a refund as required under the ESOS Act, and can be found at www.jcu.edu.au/policy/student/finance/JCUDEV_005357.html. The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students studying on a student visa which also operates under the ESOS Act. The TPS replaces the Tuition Assurance Scheme and the ESOS Assurance Fund. On the rare occasions that a provider is unable
to deliver a course an international student has paid for and does not meet its legal obligations to make alternative course replacements or provide a refund, the TPS will assist students to find an alternative place or, if this is not possible, provide a refund of any unspent tuition fees. For further information see tps.gov.au/Information/Students/How. Deferral, temporary suspension or cancellation of enrolment The ESOS National Code and student visa conditions contain restrictions on when you, or JCU, can defer, suspend or cancel your enrolment. You may only defer commencement of your study or take a leave of absence once you have commenced when there are compassionate or
compelling reasons for doing so. A “compassionate or compelling reason” is something which is beyond your control and which has, or will have, an impact on your academic progress or wellbeing. The University may suspend a student temporarily, enforcing a break from study, in certain circumstances. For details of those circumstances, and more information on deferral, suspension and cancellation, see the Deferral, Suspension and Cancellation of Study Guidelines for Students and Applicants who hold International Student Visas: www.jcu.edu.au/international/public/groups/everyone/documents/ policy/jcuprd_034357.pdf
