Thriving Edges Bronx, New York Studio I/ The Five Borough Studio Advisor/ Kaja Kßhl Team/ Tian Guo, Niomi Sha, Linda Schilling Living Productive Water Edge to empower local business and communities Hunts Point is known because it’s the main food distribution center for the five boroughs in New York. From the community point of view this place suffers of the highest rates of: crime, low education, unemployment, health issues (asthma, obesity, health disease, drug abuse) from the natural perspective Hunts Point land and water bodies have been severely contaminated during the last decades. Our goal is to rethink the relationship of the industries in this area, the community and the rivers. The new water edge programs will provide empowering tools for the community: Training Centers, New Jobs, and Recreational Spaces, Promote stronger sense of community and create awareness about food & sustainability. We see Riverside Park as a starting point for the edge development, moving south to the Hunts Point Landing. Our initial intervention would be encompassed by three main architectural elements: a corridor path, topographic and programmatic interventions. A series of floating platforms will be dedicated for the production of local food and water cleansing. This floating units will be partly managed by the Food Distribution Center and operated by the community. Along the path we also envision ground supporting facilities that allow space for open food markets, training areas and recreational facilities.

Oaxa/keepsie Poughkeepsie, New York Studio II / American Cities & Regional Contexts Advisor / Lee Altman, Michael Murphy Team / EJ Woo, Jorge Espinoza, Niomi Shah Immigration into the United States is likely to continue in coming years. In Poughkeepsie, the largest current immigrant group comes from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. Along with other cultures, have brought with them traditions and knowledge that can be leveraged toward cultural exchange and economic growth. The presence of Oaxacans, among others, has stabilized population in the City and has been revitalizing Main Street over two decades ago, when entrepreneurial immigrants started opening new businesses, where they mainly offer traditional cuisines. Main Street has now emerged from a total desolation period, but the process of expansion and starting new businesses can take several immigrant generations. In order to maintain and increase this economic stabilization, it will be necessary to help immigrants get over all the barriers they face by creating a supporting network for business and other for basic services so that both networks develop each other. For business we envision Poughkeepsie’s Main Street as a vibrant hub of Oaxacan Cuisine, specializing in the authenticity of its most iconic dish: mole; and offering learning, production, and tasting experiences for locals and visitors. This would be made possible through the development of a community kitchen, spice market and culinary school, and incentives for the creation of new related businesses along the street.

Expo Milano 2015 Milan, Italy US Pavilion/ American Food 2.0 United to Feed the Planet Collaboration/ Thinc Design

For the first time in the history of world’s fairs, the theme of Expo Milano was food. “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” explored the challenge of feeding the estimated 9 billion people who will inhabit our planet by the year 2050. Together with public programming and on-line presence, the USA pavilion exhibits highlighted America’s food systems and innovations, locating America as a force in the food world. Through installations that combined living food plants, displays, and digital storytelling, the pavilion engaged a global conversation addressing topics such as food security and policy, international relations, science and technology, nutrition and health, and the evolution of culinary culture. More than 6 million people toured the pavilion making it the most visited pavilion at Expo Milano.

Competition / 3rd place Arts and Craft Park Collaboration / OPUS Estudio

The project was located at an abandoned railroad facility, our challenge was to create educational spaces for the community while maintaining the historical value of a 90-year old industrial patrimony. It will have a training center for work in arts and crafts, with academic offers that guarantee the development of job skills and rapid occupational outings. Because of its location, the Arts and Crafts Park is part of the mega-projects of “Adaptation of the Alluvial Plain of the Medellín River” of the Metropolitan Area, and the “Improvement of the Educational, Cultural and Environmental Services in the Municipalities of the Center of Antioquia”, Metropolitan Region, of the Government of Antioquia.
