Happy New Year Nepal Sambat 1130!! It is not just amazing but also alarming that even after the recognition of Nepal era as a national era, some people are still trying to argue that it is a communal celebration and that belongs to Newah community only. It is not because that they do not know the true essence of this era but because there is still a substantial amount of people with illusion to suppress Newahs. Most probably, Nepal Sambat is the only era in the world that carries the name of a country. The glorious histories of Newahs are well known to the world. They are not just skilled artists as most quack historians have explained about them. Yes, they are musicians, architects, engineers, and scientists and more importantly they are the most brave people of Nepal. Prithvi Narayan Shaha, the founder of Shaha dynasty fought with Newahs for 18 years to conquer the valley which is the longest fight he had fought. He even faced war with Newah women warriors. History of Nepal is undoubtedly transparent that his victory is a deceptive. Later, scared Prithvi Narayan Shaha deviously spread propaganda that Newahs are cowards to demoralise and not to give them job in army. The number of Newahs took part in two world wars is a matter of interest and it is needed to be studied. Martyrs Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Shukra Raj Shastri, Ganga Lal Shrestha, Tej Bahadur Amatya, Ganesh Man Singh, Pushpa Lal Shrestha have added important chapters of bravery in the modern history of Nepal. In the course of suppressing defeated people of the then Nepal, the Newahs, Prithvi Narayan Shaha burnt the hundreds of valuable books to erase the self-explanatory testimonials of the valley. This was the first step of suppressing Nepal Bhasa, the language of Newahs which is being continued until today by the Khas dominated government. It is noteworthy to remember here that Nepal had achieved its recognition in United Nations only because of Newahs' beautiful Ranjana script. It is just last year that Nepal government made a discriminatory decision that Nepal Bhasa can be studied as an optional subject in lieu of mathematics or science. What a derogatory decision? Newahs, wake up, do not just spend your time celebrating Happy New Year and Mha Puja. Speak your language at home with children and wherever possible. Chittadhar Hridaya A best known poet of Nepal Bhasa is a prominent poet, writer. His "Sugat Saurav", an epic about the teachings lord Buddha is one of his best creations.This book has been translated into various languages.
Mahakabi or a great poet of Modern era of Nepal bhasa penned more than 70 literary books. He did everything he could to uplift Nepal Bhasa yet the affluent writers of his own newar community rejected him. He composed verses, plotted novels and dramas, edited magazines, organised literary symposiums, acted and sung. He did all these in his own languague Nepal Bhasa.

Many of you are aware of the fact that Pasa Puchah Guthi has survived through an extremely critical phase during the period of last one year. With all your support and best wishes towards PPGUK it has been able to safely overcome the difficulties created by a handful of breakaway factions who were trying to open a separate Newah organisation. It also survived from a small group of people who wanted to disregard the nine years old existence and the history of PPGUK. Today, PPGUK has grown stronger with your full support and successfully extended to the various parts of the country with its regional chapters. On behalf of Guthi, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your rigorous support to save PPGUK. The massive enthusiasm shown by participants in the last Newah open forum has proved that we can join hands for the sake of Newah and their causes mainly language and culture. I hope you will equally support various programmes and targets set according to this spirit. I also hope that you will forgive if any mistakes were made in course of fulfilling the tasks. Kartik Nach Book Review
A book on classical and musical drama on Krishna Leela dramatized live since last 369 years in Lalitpur Durbar Square, Collected and Edited by Shree Hariman Shrestha
T
he Kartik Nach (Kartik Dance), dramatized by Shree Siddhi Narsingh Malla, the legendary king of the middle period of Malla dynasty, since 369 years ago in Nepal Era (NE) 761 (1697 Bikram Era (BE) or 1640 AD), is a very popular traditional and cultural dance of Lalitpur played each year for the welfare of the state and the people. The dance based on the Krishna Lila, the characteristic behavior of Lord Krishna, and supplemented with Shree Barah and Shree Narshing dances is played as a public show every year on the Kartik Dabali in Lalitpur Durbar Square in the month of Kartik (OctoberNovember) for full 8 days in the evening. His beloved son Shree Shreeniwas Malla in NE 787 ( BE 1723) extended the Kartik Nach for another 7 days with addition of Bah Thah Nach, the dance of wise men. The beloved son of Shree Shreeniwas Malla, Shree Yognarendra Malla, added the “Madhavanara” and “Ushaharan” episodes and extended the Kartik Nach for full 30 days and established the tradition of the dance. This way, the Dance was named Kartik nach and played during the month of Kartik The specialty of the dance is that it is not limited on one topic but also various dances on different context are played for the period of whole month of Kartik. The main character of the dance is Shree Krishna whereas the Narsingh incarnation dance is the main act. The Kartik Dance is the traditional longest dramatic expression of Nepal. It would not be an exaggeration if we say that it could be a longest traditional drama of the world. The dance is even today performed live on stage in the public. The dance is not only just a traditional Shastriya one but rather it is a live document of the inclusive characteristics of the ancient, religious, historic,

tantrik proceedings and public dramatic forms. Another very specific characteristic of the dance is that from the very day of Shree Siddhinarsingh Malla, it has included various communities from Brahmans to various ethnic groups and castes of Newar Community and bounded together the various ethnic and religious groups into one thread and created the environment of peaceful coexistence. The Kartik dance has been performed in an uninterrupted manner upto Nepal Era 1069 (2006 BE or 1949 AD) for a period of full month. But because of the political unrest, since NE 1070 it could not be performed for the whole month. Thereafter since NE 1071 to 1100 (BE 2008-2037) for 30 years, the dance was performed only for two days with the Barah and Narsingh avatar dances. After the formation of “Kartik Dance Management Committee in NE 1101 (BE 2038), the dance was performed uninterrupted upto date for 8 days with the Barah and Narsingh avatar dances supplemented with other dances selected from the 30 days dance list in an alternate sequence. With the in-depth feeling of this responsibility, the Senior Citizens’ Society of Nepal, Lalitpur has taken initiatives to publish the book “Kartik Nach” and release on the occasion of the International Senior Citizens’ day October 1 under the program of documentation of knowledge and skill of Senior Citizens. The book is dedicated to the People. The book was collected and edited by respected Shree. Hari Man Shrestha as a part of his memoir of lifetime involvement in the execution of drama during last 64 years as a director, choreographer, performer and teacher of the drama, dance and music based on “on-the-spot” knowledge transfer from previous teachers or Guru. The foreword to the book was written by revered Shree. Satya Mohan Joshi, the literary and cultural heritage expert of Nepal. The publication was supported by a large circle of communities, organizations and individuals from Lalitpur and the rest of the World with the contribution of physical and financial resources.

The Senior Citizens’ Society is fully confident that upon the initiatives taken by the Government, the communities and the people, the traditional dance could be reverted back to its full form and performed for the whole month. The Senior Citizens' Society of Nepal, Lalitpur and the Kartik Nach Management Committee request for full cooperation from all. The book comprises of 362 pages of A4 size format with several colour photographic illustrations from live act. The book “Katti Pyakhan (in Nepal Bhasa)” is written as it is dramatized in actual form and is a mixed expression of Nepal Bhasa, Maithili and Sanaskrit together. The book is a live documentation of the strong bond established between the Newar and Maithili communities from the historic times.

Dharma Ratna Trisuli A Tribute

Dharma Ratna (1930-2007) was a true scholar and a true Buddhist: he was dedicated to research and clear exposition in the name of Buddhism. His understanding of it was particularly deep and, so far as I know, largely self-taught,. He always struck me as a very wise man, who used his time well, never wasting a minute. I had the impression that he understood the society he came from quite profoundly. It was typical of him – typical of his deep thinking and subtle approach to his own tradition, an approach at once conservative and reformist – that he was a Pali scholar and played a key role in the establishment of the Pariyatti Siksa which is so instrumental in teaching Buddhism to young Nepalis today, and that he was closely related to many Theravada monks and nuns, whom he supported as much as he could, and yet he was no Theravada fundamentalist,

simultaneously believing in and practising the traditional Vajrayana Buddhism he had inherited as a Sakya and a member of Kwa Baha, the famous Hiranya-varna-mahavihar. Sadly, I did not get to know him well. When I lived in Kuti Baha-Nag Baha for nineteen months (from September 1982 to May 1984) he was still living in Trisuli, where he had a shop. Later he retired to Lalitpur (Yala), first to his old family home in Jhyatapol, where I visited him once, and later to a new house over the river in the new suburb of Naya Baneshwar. Had he retired earlier, while I was trying to grapple with understanding Newar Buddhism, I am sure I would have been drawn to him and would have visited him many times, since Jhyatapol is no more than a few steps from Kuti Baha. And I am sure he would have helped me a great deal. I met him casually on quite a few occasions, but, as I remember, I only carried out detailed interviews with him twice, once in 1989 and once in 2003. The interview in 1989 was held in his old

house in Jhyatapol. Technically that corner of Jhyatapol is known as Tajaphah and he told me that his ancestors had bought the house from some Brahmans 2-300 years ago. At that time I was mainly interested in talking to him about rules of deference and how they differed as between Newars and Parbatiyas, and as between different Newar groups. Characteristically, he answered my questions thoughtfully, patiently, and fully, not challenging my right to ask or ever questioning why I should want to know. When the conversation moved on to life-cycle rituals, he told me that he wasn’t really in favour of the ihi or bel-vivaha mock marriage ritual for which the Newars are famous. He didn’t think it really had much point: “But what to do? We have to live in society (samajay cwane mah).” I said, “But by that argument you could get rid of first rice-feeding and all the others as well.” He disagreed: annaprasana has a point, the marking of the end of the period of (birth) impurity, but ihi does not. Another interesting conversation I had with him occurred quite by chance. One day, in January 2000, I was sitting in the sun by the Bagmati bridge at Sankhamul, when he came by. He sat with me and told me of a great personal loss: his 37-year-old son had died of a heart attack just three months before, leaving behind two sons aged 7 and just 9 months. After I had commiserated with him, as best I could, we spent some time discussing the Theravada movement, and in particular the thorny issue of bhiksuni ordination, which I was researching at that time, for the book that I later published with Sarah LeVine (Rebuilding Buddhism: The Theravada Movement in Twentieth-Century Nepal, Harvard University Press, 2005). His opinion was that the anagarikas, the local Theravada nuns, were wrong to have taken the bhiksuni or full nun’s ordination from the Chinese Fo Guang Shan sect. “They can stay as anagarika and still be arhats,” he said. “They’ve taken the Sarvastivada Vinaya [rules of monastic conduct], but kept the Theravada siddhanta (teachings).” I tried to point out that the ordination tradition was one thing, and the philosophical teachings another.

Chinese nuns work, they don’t.” “What sort of work do the Chinese nuns do?” I asked. “They teach, work in hospitals, and do all kinds of development work. If I were an anagarika I’d just stay as an anagarika. There are different words [for being a nun] in different countries. It’s only in Nepal and India that they are called anagarika. The Buddha said [when the earliest nuns came to him], ‘Are you ready to bow down to the youngest monk?’ They said that they were, and he said, ‘Very well, but [because I have permitted women to be ordained] the teaching (sasan) will now last only for 500 years [instead of 5,000 years]’.” I asked him: “But if you say that women cannot be equal, how can that be the Buddha’s teaching?” He replied: “How can we say that it isn’t?” I said, “Western Buddhists will be angry if you say this.” He said, “Being angry is one thing, but it doesn’t affect the facts. You can’t be a Buddha, an Indra, or a Cakravartin as a woman. You can be a Buddha’s mother, or you can be reborn in the Brahma world where there are only men.... I wouldn’t have done it [taken bhiksuni ordination]. But look, all this is just my opinion. I’m just a householder. I have to say namaskar to them, whether they are anagarika or bhiksuni, bhiksu, fakir, or whatever!” With that, he smiled gravely, got up, and continued on his way to Lalitpur. Three years later, in January 2003, I went to visit him in his new house. I remember being impressed that he appeared to be completely at ease with word-processing whatever he was working on at the time on a PC. His nephew, Bhiksu Maitri, was staying with him, having come from Lumbini the day before, and leaving while I was there for the airport. Dharma Ratna spent one and a half hours telling me about the history of Theravada in Trisuli and the history of the Pariyatti Siksa. I said I would come back, but that was the last time I spoke to him.

Dharma Ratna Yami A freedom fighter and social reformer

wo young men with same name were always confused when someone call "Dharma Ratna!!". One day these two brilliant youths agreed to change their surnames calling themselves "Yami" and "Trishuli". Dharma Ratna Tuladhar chose "Yami" because he is from Yen (Kathmandu). The people of Yen (Kathmandu) are called Yami in Nepal Bhasa. Dharma Ratna Shakya chose "Trishuli" as he lived and worked in the area. Born to father Bhavani Ratna and mother Devi Maya in 1913 AD, Dharma Ratna saw numerous turbulences within the family from property confiscation to own father's suicide upon the death of beloved wife. He and his poor father received the message of Devi Maya's death in Tibet where they were earning for livelihood. He was only seventeen. Chandra Shumsher the then Prime Minister had confiscated their wealth with conspiracy. Poverty ridden but gifted Dharma Ratna had no choice but to watch anxiously his contemporaries going to school from the hearth of the goldsmith

where he used to work as a fire blower He even sewed shoes to earn bread. He learnt alphabets, reading writing with his own effort. Fortunately, in Tibet he came to the contact of scholar Buddhist Monk Rahul Sankrityayan who taught him a lot about Buddhism and other subjects. He is a literati, a politician, a revolutionary, moreover, a social reformer and patriot. He produced several books on literature, politics and social reforms in Nepal Bhasa and Khas Bhasa. His involvement in politics led him to 18 years of prison sentence in 1940. He met several Nepal Bhasa literati in prison including Chitta Dhar Hridaya, Siddhi Charan Shrestha and Kedar Man Byathit. He used prison as his school to learn literature from learned literati and wrote "Arhat Nanda" an epic, " Vishwontaryaa Machaa Daan", "Nwakhaam Puchala" and "Buddha Maanisa Hun". "Sandeya lisa", "Lithu", "Ang Lhamo" , "Bhrikuti" and "Nepalko Kura" are also his books. One of his beautiful creations "Ang Lhamo" a novel, was confiscated by Panchayat regime while another novel "Bhrikuti" bagged Shrestha Sirapa, the first literature award of the country.

According to Dr. Kayo Yami, Dharma Ratna's daughter, he used to collect refused meat from butcher's shop to feed her pregnant wife.
He is a staunch supporter of patriotic movement. He issued a statement against the then influential leader B. P. Koirala's unpatriotic pro-Indian speech without any fear which brought a temporary social unrest in the country. He backed king Tribhuvan and became the deputy forest minister in M P Koirala's cabinet.
He received financial assistance from king Tribhuvan to buy a house. Minister Dharma Ratna appointed a man called Hakucha, a Pode (A man from sweeper class who is considered as lowest and untouchable) as his personal chef. Probably, this could be the first and last but the best example ever shown by a political or social leader in the history of Nepal for equality.
His actions of social reform were too much for the then conservative society of Kathmanduites. He regularly drank water from the hands of his Muslim neighbour when they were considered below than untouchables. His community unsuccessfully tried to ditch him and labelled as an insane but he bravely continued to ignore them and kept not only chickens but also pigs. Tuladhars were not allowed to keep chickens and should have taken bath in river if touched a pig. He was against the blind belief based rituals and never performed one at home.
His intelligence upon reflects upon his all six brilliant children achieving success in their respective fields. Hisila yami is the youngest among the daughters and most prominent one because of her political career. He died at the age of 60.
His revolutionary actions could not attract the then conservative society, but in 1945, Hira Devi, a daughter of wealthy Newar trader fell in love and eloped with him against her parents' wish. She was yet another woman who just not dared to marry a pauper but supported husband throughout for his fight for democracy and social reform. For this, parents and relatives abandoned
