PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Friends, I take immense pleasure in congratulating the editorial board of this Newsletter of ExAVMS for successfully bringing out the first ever Journal of our Association. This is yet one more noble achievement that highlights the rise of our Association. We have come a long way now and we are confident that we will now only keep on going forward. I highly appreciate the tremendous efforts made by a small group of dedicated ex-AVMS alumni in reaching worldwide exAVM friends and slowly absorbing them into our Association. Today, we are an impressive big family of businessmen, bankers, bureaucrats, technocrats, engineers, doctors, politicians, teachers and more, from all walks of life. We plan to create a synergy of good things.

Vo l . 1, Issue 1

SHORT INTRODUCTION Ex-Adarsha Vidya Mandir Students’ Association (Ex-AVMS Assn) was formally registered in 2046 BS. It is a volunteer organization with the aim to provide social service to the community, to encourage its Association members to grow, develop and excel in their respective professions through building strong bondages and networking among themselves. It also encourages and pursues recreation among its members. The Association is guided by the motto “Be Good and Do Good”. The Executive Committee of the Association is currently involved in a major campaign to encourage exstudents to register themselves as members of the Association. To make this “Membership Building Campaign” more effective, at least two persons from each batch have been selected as Batch Ambassadors (BatchAmb) who are personally responsible for getting their SLC Batch Mates to register as members of the Association.

CHARITY ACTIVITY AT MAN MAIJU VDC On Tue 27 Ashadh 2063 (11 Jul 2006, also Guru Purnima day), the Assn was involved in a charity activity at an orphanage called CHARITY NEPAL (situated in Man Maiju VDC near Balaju) for which the Assn had earlier allocated Rs. 15,000. Altogether a 1,000L Water Tank, a Computer Table, a Laser Printer and 50 pairs of slippers were handed over to the orphanage. In addition to these, some cookies, yoghurt and fruit juice were also distributed to the orphans and other children who had gathered there.

This is the best tribute we can pay to our late Founder Principal Satya Narayan Bahadur Shrestha and continue to strive towards building a healthy prosperous nation. Come! Let us join hands and think together. Let our family grow.

KISHORE K. MAHARJAN President, Ex-AVMS Association

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE It gives me immense pleasure to acknowledge the fact that the Ex-AVMS Association has, though very late, come forth with its first ever Journal. In a time when activities are more oppressive and less transparent, this effort offers an authentic platform for its activities to be unveiled. I wish a smooth continuation and a healthy life to this effort.

SUJEETA MANANDHAR Principal, AVM Higher Secondary School

Besides the members of the Ex-AVMS Assn, the Principal and some students of AVM School were also present. Those present locally were the President of Charity Nepal, his wife, volunteer staff, locals and 50 orphans living in the orphanage. (Note: The Assn wishes to thank all the Ex-AVMS, both in and outside Nepal, who kindly contributed money at short notice.)

Ex-AVMS ACTIVITIES DURING THE PAST YEAR AGM-cum-Annual Gala 2005 On Friday 14 Aswin 2062 (30 Sep 2005), a grand reunion programme was organized by Ex-AVMS. The programme started with a Cultural Programme performed by the junior students of the school (by courtesy of the Principal). This event was then followed by the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the Annual Gala, which comprised dancing and partying. The AGM cum Gala was a grand success because around 650 members, a figure three times than expected, attended. All the Executive Committee members and those heavily involved are thanked for their hard work and dedication which have made the evening a very memorable event and a remarkable milestone in the Association’s achievements.

Inter School Cricket Tournament 2005 The Association was involved in the 2nd Shree SNB Memorial Cup Inter School Cricket Tournament from 26 Mangsir to 3 Paush 2062 (11 to 18 Dec 2005). The matches up to the semi finals were played at the IOE Pulchowk ground; however, the final match was played at the TU Kirtipur ground. Just before the prize distribution, the President gave a short speech and, on behalf of Ex-AVMS Assn, presented the Principal of AVM School with a cheque for Rs 10,000 as financial assistance. Besides this, the President also managed to collect from about half a dozen sponsors, items ranging from Horlicks drinks, to NEBICO biscuits, to 2PM noodles etc, which the students on the ground enjoyed.

Advisory/Executive Committee Meeting On Sunday 07 Falgun 2062 (19 Feb 2006), the Assn’s Advisory Committee met with the Executive Committee members and Batch Ambassadors at Dechenling Garden in Thamel. The members started gathering at 1230 hrs and lasted about two and a half hours. The meeting was especially important because several decisions regarding sponsors for Adarsha Mela planned for Saturday 20 Falgun 2062, were made.

Adarsha Mela The much-awaited Adarsha Mela was held on Saturday 20 Falgun 2062 (04 Mar 2006) at AVM School premises from 10 am to 5 pm. Such an event was organized after a very long period; in fact few can actually recall when a similar one was last organized. The Mela was a fun-filled extravaganza the attractions being the Food stalls, Live Music, Disco, Consumer stalls, Fun stalls, Bingo and many more. This mega event was extremely successful because the number of visitors (around 5,000) was more than expected and it seemed everyone enjoyed and had fun. Out of the modest profits made from this event, the Assn made small donations to both AVM School and SNB Foundation. This is obviously an important milestone in the Assn’s history.

OVERSEAS ACTIVITIES Ex-AVMS Reunion in USA On 04 July 2003, the ex-students of AVM in USA held a reunion to meet “long lost” friends. With the aim to maximize participation, a mailing list was created in Yahoo Groups to which over 110 exstudents excitedly responded. Because of the distance involved, a very large number was unable to attend the event. The event, attended by 17 ex-students, was organized during the annual convention of ANA (Assn of Nepalese in Americas) at the Marriott Hotel in Denver, Colorado, and hosted by RMFN (Rocky Mountain Friends of Nepal). As a token of respect to our beloved Principal Late Mr. SNB Shrestha, a one-minute silence was observed. The ex-students were also informed about Ex-AVMS current activities, its membership drive in Kathmandu to bring all the ex-students together and the formation of the SNB Foundation. The ex-students kindly contributed US$330 to the SNB Foundation which was later sent to Kathmandu. The senior-most member, Ajay Pradhan (Batch 2035)(Vice President / RMFN) talked about AVM School and its Founder Principal, and distributed plaques to all the attendees. (Note: The Ex-AVMS Assn wishes to thank the ex-members in the USA for their generous contributions and Amrit Kayastha (SLC Batch 2041) for so kindly organizing such a memorable and significant reunion hopes that such get-togethers become regular features there).

Ex-AVMS Get-Together in Australia On Saturday 19 November 2005 (04 Mangsir 2062), the ex-students of AVM in Australia (who call themselves Ex-AVMMites) held a small but memorable get-together in Sydney. The gathering was attended by 15 ex-students and their families. The gathering was a great success because all those who attended were understandably very pleased and they admitted that the get-together allowed them to meet some of their friends whom they had not met since passing out from AVM. What is noteworthy is that all the members are now well-settled in Australia and they give credit to and thank AVM for all their achievements in life. On behalf of Ex-AVMS Association, Rajni Shrestha (Batch 2030) who happened to be enjoying her holidays there during this event, named Prasanna Mool (Batch 2031), as the Australian Ex-AVMS Ambassador. We are proud to welcome the 15 new members in Australia who have registered as members of the Association. (Note: The Ex-AVMS Association wishes to thank Prasanna for his tremendous effort in organizing the get-together that brought together “lost friends”; please keep up the good work and keep the Association informed about AVMMites activities as and when they occur in future).
