Fashion is an emotion. Fashion is a feeling of empowerment and confidence.
In late February of 2017, I was stuck at a crossroads in my personal life. After living a virulent two years in college, it left me with a hole. Having lost myself and my ambitions amidst the stress and chaos, it left me sitting there with one simple question: How do I find myself again?
And so began the search. Conversation with multiple
peers lead me to discover, college has a way of deterring
you, often losing yourself amongst the everyday stressors of young adulthood. So clearly, it is not just me who is
drained and lost. The consensus was- we had no place to creatively thrive. Which brought me to my next
question: What is a way I can not only elevate my life of creation, but others? There was no platform for fashion
students to get creative exposure at a state university in Southwest Missouri. Fashion is a topic left untouched.
The conversation was nonexistent, only offering a “that is really cool” when a student learns you’re majoring in Fashion Design or Fashion Merchandising.
That is when Sartorial was born. I wanted to bring a
platform to Missouri State to expose the creatives that
dwell here. Our students work tirelessly in many areas,
but the more creatives seem to be the least discussed. Fashion is so much more than clothing, fashion is how
you live, it is culture, it is something that pushes you to do better everyday.
The resources are abundant, the fashion community is
ever growing in Springfield, Missouri, and the Midwest as a whole. The only issue is tapping those resources,

and I feel so strongly that Sartorial has found the perfect formula to keep the conversation around fashion
alive. I hope that Sartorial gives creatives, students,
and everyone alike to express themselves through the
love of breathtaking imagery, creative direction with an
unmatched level of drive and grit, and of course, fashion. We are fashion, we are grit, we are ambitious. We are Sartorial.

STAXX APPAREL Written by Alyssah S. Morrison Interview by Shelby Harvey
Staxx Apparel seeks to provide a wide range of contemporary styles for Midwestern shoppers. As you walk into this boutique, you will be overwhelmed by both warmth and glamour. A large area rug and leather couch make the space feel homey, and the metallic racks of various styles, ranging from brands like Free People to Show Me Your Mumu, invite the customer into a fashion scene beyond themselves.

Strut into springtime with some gingham Free People loafers ($98) or prep for summer in the khaki Dusk Romper by Spell & The Gypsy ($153). Staxx is one of the only Springfield boutiques that carries such selective brands, maintaining an incessant flow of new trends and feels appealing to each person’s individual style. You will find bohemian, athleisure, Mod, retro, modern, professional, and 70’s styles. Creative Director and Buyer Tara Hamilton gave us some insight into the buying world—wanting to select more daring pieces for the store, while also wondering if certain looks
are translatable to the Midwest buyer. When asked what sets Staxx apart from other boutiques, Tara replied, “Our brands. We carry a lot of brands that no one else in Springfield does. Our store appeals to all ages. We get almost six boxes in a day, so if you come in one day, it could be completely different the next day.” Walking into the store, you are instantly aware of Staxx’s vast inventory and constant flux of styles. Tara shared that the current Staxx’s Instagram following LOVES the new styles by For Love and Lemons: lacey two-piece outfits, summer dresses in fun prints, and flashy night-out slips. Currently, Tara’s own favorite piece in the store is the flowy and floral Dahlia

Inside Lucid Living By Anthony Nam
In his Senior collection, Aaron went from classic street style to a more upscale technical style, and offered plenty of movement in his statement pieces. A big trend that has shown itself in street style is the overall, whether, you’re wearing a corduroy or a denim, overalls have brought itself back into our style. Pairing a mock turtleneck sweater with a pair of overalls is a quick fashionable style for the day, and you can style your overalls even further by fastening only one strap and letting the other hang, or even not fastening either strap and securing the overall by using the straps as a belt. In Aaron’s overalls he
created a classic distressed denim, and offered movement in his pieces with his fringe side seams. Easily making, anyone in these overalls a head turning in the streets of any city. Streetwear can be sourced from a variety of places. For some, that may be a local thrift store, an online retailer, or even recycled fashion. After the perfect piece is found, you can either throw that new piece on and start your day, or even take that piece and refashion it into something that screams you. That’s what St. Louis based designer, Connor Jordan did when he brought Lucid Living Clothing to life. He told us, “I started designing so that people PHOTOGRAPHER

could purchase quality items for a reasonable price.” Quality isn’t defined by the price tag. Lucid Living embodies classic street wear with its distressed denim pieces and it’s custom print t-shirts. Taking a classic denim jacket, and refashioning it with embellishments, a new lining, or even distressing the original garment can help make for the perfect finishing touch. Connor does a mixture of flat pattern work to take thrifted items and refashion them into new pieces for his clients. For him, Lucid Living aims to make people aware that no matter what situation they come from, they can make their dreams a reality. Which was true for Connor, when he had his grand opening for his store in St. Louis, on November 26, 2017. He was able to sell forty t-shirts and four pairs of jeans, and was able to make connections with people throughout

the day. Hoping to use those connections to be able to take his streetwear out of Missouri and expose his work to bigger cities. We asked Connor, what are some of his staple streetwear pieces, and he said, “You must need a denim jacket, I think a denim jacket can be used in so many ways. It can be used to be layered with a hoodie, flannel, or a logo tee.” Everything can be seen in his own personal style, that he calls “mine.” People are able to wear the same outfit, but you can always see a piece of their own personality shining through. If you are looking for a piece of streetwear, whether that be, jackets, t-shirts, or jeans, Lucid Living Clothing offers an opportunity of quality, personality, and reasonable pricing.

daily, switching out your usual social media routine for Linked In “stalking” sessions, and preparing at least seven killer interview outfits for when the big day finally comes. Welcome to the
semester before the much anticipated internship that has helped to jump start my career with a major retailer called JCPenney. Hello Sartorial readers! My name is Marissa White and I am
a senior Merchandising student in the fashion department at Missouri State. This is my story of my first summer working in
corporate America and the industry we know and love called retail.
I’m sure many of you have heard about the current state of department stores, malls, or brick and mortar retail in
general – anyone following our industry in the news has read the headlines questioning if this is the end as we know it.

1. Take Risks
Personally, I believe this whole industry is about taking risks and trying new things. Playing it safe is no fun anyways! I knew that in order to grow as an individual and as a
professional, I needed to apply to companies outside of my comfort zone where I could start fresh. Ending up in
Texas was a true blessing because I used this opportunity to tackle a foreign city and meet inspiring new people. It
was important to me however to remain true to myself and never lose sight of where I came from or the people I left
back in Missouri for the summer. It may seem scary at first, but remember there’s no reward without risk!
2. Make Connections
I can guarantee this isn’t the first time you’ve heard this one,
but that obviously means they’re onto something! This summer I was able to connect with business professionals and students from all over the world that I still communicate with weekly if
not more frequently. While making lifelong friends with other interns, I found lifelong mentors in the men and women who
trained me and truly care about my success. I took initiative to
meet with positions outside of my team to get a well-rounded view of the business from visual merchandising to marketing, and sourcing to product development. In the end, it’s not what you know it’s who you know.
3. Ask Questions
Believe it or not, asking questions does not show weakness!
JCPenney instilled this in all the interns from day one and it is
definitely something I have taken back home with me. Asking
questions shows curiosity, interest, and truly makes you a more

MASKS by Abbey Burns
In the winter weather your skin can be dry, cracked, and send a cry for help. Masks can rejuvenate the skin leaving it moisturized, brighter, and glowing. Whether you have naturally dry skin, oily skin, or some scars you’d like to reduce, there is a mask for you. These masks are super easy to use and you don’t need to buy a lot of product. As a college student, I understand money is tight and no one wants to go buy a face mask for $30. We also have the fix for brittle, weak hair, and a mask for hair growth. Hello long, beautiful beach hair! I know for this summer you want to look effortlessly chic and glowing so what are you waiting for! Here are the miraculous masks.

Dry Skin 1. 1 tbsp. Mayonnaise and 1 tbsp. Banana; mix together and rub all over face, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Use once a week. 2. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, then add two hibiscus tea bags and let steep, add two tbsp of agar agar and continue to whisk; let cool and apply all over face even over eyes and mouth, let dry completely and pull off. Voila! Glowing, beautiful skin. Use once a week or when needed for a glow. (Courtesy of @Farahdhukai)
Oily Skin 1. 1 tbsp. Avocado, 1 egg white, 1 tbsp. Honey; mix and apply all over face avoiding mouth and eye area. Rinse with cool water after 10 minutes. Use once a week. 2. ½ cup oatmeal, ½ of avocado. Soak oats in water for approximately 5 minutes, while this is soaking mash up the avocado in a separate bowl. Mix the two together. Apply to face for 15 minutes then rinse with cool water. I recommend using Neutrogena OilFree moisturizer after rinsing the mask off. Use mask once a week.

Breakouts Mask Wake up in the morning and you can
just feel it. A pimple that you suddenly woke up to. We’ve all been there, it’s college, we have stress, we have jobs, and on top we have to keep our social life. On media that is of course. Whether you are prone to breakouts or you wake up to one randomly every so often we have the mask that zaps your zits away.
Cinnamon honey mask: Add one
teaspoon cinnamon and two teaspoons honey to a bowl and mix. Apply to damp skin and put all over avoiding the eye and mouth regions. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Use once a week or when the breakout hits. Mixing honey and cinnamon together kills bacteria while also reducing redness and inflammation on the skin.

STREET MOTION by
Anthony Nam
The Midwest is bursting at the seams with creativity and passion and menswear is up and coming here in Missouri. From selftaught technical designers to designers that refashion pre-owned garments, the midwest is leaving its impact on the streetwear community. The special thing about streetwear, or any type of style you are going for, is that it’s about expressing your individuality. For many, that means drawing inspiration from their day-to-day lives or even creating their own sense of individuality through something no one has ever seen before. Which, eventually leads to trends being created that generations after can choose to follow or become inspired by. Alumni, Aaron Conway, created two collections that offered classic and elevated streetwear looks. His Junior collection represented comfort and style
52
53
SARTOR IAL
through the use of contrasting textiles and colors. You can see a variety of comfortable styles on the streets, and who doesn’t want to be stylish while also being able to wear joggers and a sweatshirt? To easily elevate your style, you can take a pair of plain joggers, and pair them with a short sleeve sweatshirt with a hoodie. From that point, the last thing you need is a pair of shoes that make a statement or offer a sleek style. In his Senior collection, Aaron went from classic street style to a more upscale, technical approach, and offered plenty of movement in his statement pieces. A big trend that has shown itself in street style is the overall. Whether, you’re wearing a corduroy or denim, overalls have brought itself back into our style. Pairing a mock turtleneck sweater with a pair of overalls is a quick fashionable style for the day, and you can style your overalls even further by fastening only one strap and letting the other hang,
54
55

or not even fastening either strap and securing the overall by using the straps as a belt. In Aaron’s overalls he created a classic distressed denim, and offered movement in his pieces with his fringe side seams. Easily making, anyone in these overalls a head turning in the streets of any city. In the dynamic world of fashion, you have to be able to be able to keep up, or stay ahead of the crowd. In streetwear, your biggest statement pieces are going to be your outerwear, shoes, and prints. At the New York Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2018 shows, the collections displayed broad shoulders and cinched waists. Walking the streets with subtle but bold colors and a minimalist shoe, black will continue to be a staple color for all streetwear, but this Spring you can find the use of lighter colors — oranges, light pinks, and tang yellows. Simplicity is stepping its way back into our avenues, and we’re ready for it.
