Student Pods Asian college of journalism, for their new course, required a hostel building. The site for the hostel was in a tight urban neighborhood, design challenge was also to make the hostel to be converted into serviced apartments. when all these parameters are put in, though there is a hierarchy of common space is provided through balcony and cutouts the space for interactions is still insufficient. so we resolved it by making the stairwell exclusive for interaction and we named it Stair room. At each level the stair anchors and provides possibilities to interact and not just serving its fundamental. My role as the project in charge took me through all phases involved in the AEC industry. From initial, tender, construction drawings, to site coordination, client, vendors, structural engineers, and contracts coordination. I had the opportunity to design and prototype objects like soap and towel hanger for bathroom and light fixture to make the common areas to get emphasized during nighttime.

Sun | Glass | Retail An attempt to create balance Project Wallace Garden is a retail outlet building, The site is located in one of the major commercial roads in Chennai city. The design challenge is to keep it visible from the abutting roads with a harsh west sun. The ideal condition is to minimize the use of mechanical ventilation and make building use the least energy. Avoiding glass skin on the west becomes impossible in this context due to commercial reason. We then conducted a study on how the other buildings on the road address this issue, the result showed this as a pressing but neglected issue everywhere. Following that, we tried to create the balance by changing the parameters of building elements, such as introducing sun breakers, angular walls, and overhangs in varying scales.

Intent The design of cultural centre for sedhiou aims at using limitations of a place as source to create culture, community and social conditions. Our proposal is an outcome in addressing lack of water, lack of skilled craftsmen and lack of resources. To employ the unskilled work force available to excavate a part of land to create an artificial reservoir to store water for the community • •

To use the excavated earth to build foundation, plinth and enclosures To use locally available mangrove sticks as structural member to support corrugated tin sheet roofing.

Urur kuppam is a small urban village with fishing as their major occupation. We from MOAD worked along with NGO called Vetiver Collective and inSeason fishes. Problem was though the fish they sell at this local village market is in quality better than the larger markets is still neglected because of the physical condition. In order to bring in hygiene in the way they sell fish, we recreated the tray used for displaying the fish. The whole process of bringing fish from boat to cleaning it before selling is documented and analyzed. There are numerous meeting conducted to arrive at a prototype that is goes with ease into their daily life. Idea is to make change with small gestural change in the existing condition.

Urban Living Room The idea is to break away the notion of public square and reinvent it. We saw this given site as another room on the Lanzarote fabric, but as an open room. We conceived this square to behave as an urban living room. Upon understanding various landscape characters of Lanzarote, the dominant traits of the landscape and the landforms found to be helping us further in realizing the intimacy, compartmentalization, articulation and maneuvering of public in the square, yet keeping it open. The landscape of Lanzarote is so powerful, that it influences and helps in creating dynamism in the design. The most significant of the landforms being the hills and contours associated with the volcanic soil. Vineyards covering the layer of contours gave a very strong character and changes the scale of perception. Craters hold the vines along with a half-moon shaped bund protecting the vines from wind. They were called Zocos.

UG Thesis Individual 2016

The project aims to address the issues that area around urban centers faces. Idea is to make framework for group of villages shares commonalities such as physical, social and cultural traits. The components of the framework are identified based on the appropriate study and proposed to reinforce the urban edges making values for itself. Thus maintaining a well contained urban centers and rural landscape. The proposal for the Pothur, Pammathukulam and Vellanur, includes a Farm school to promote and inform next generation on traditional occupations, people’s Centre providing space for people to gather for common cause which essentially needs a open space and Environmental center where the works for regaining the lost farming lands by real estate and providing small self-help groups from social forestry by products.

The idea is to provide a platform which will act as a dynamic public space, which caters large people gather. The program is strategically located in the middle of the village clusters. The people’s centre holds multiple reasons for wide range of age groups to use this common space. The traditional way of gatherings were now not being accessed much by variety of people. Hence our current way of planning for a social cohesion will include different programs In one premises. V.A.Office in most of the villages I have seen is neither is in use nor in approachable condition. The People’s center will also house the govt. Facilities and make full use of it, On a whole the design of this program openness should allow the dynamics of the people to take place in it.

When these elements of framework are in place they will ensures the wellbeing of the place it exists also to the bigger picture. Keeping the Urban Centre intact is very essential. These flexible framework will have its impact on a longer run and reduce the intensity of urban issues that were not controllable over the period, such as migration towards cities, loss of environmental Characters.

Velachery site for UD studio during 9th semester it was severely hit by devastating flood during December 2015. We used physicality as the lens for understanding the site. Morphology of velachery was our major focus, we found the conflicts and contrasts in the neighborhood’s physicality. Process starts with general documentation of the site area and leading to the formation of structure plan and culminating with design proposal. We further extended the studio work to the Velachery neighborhood. We conducted two day exhibition of documentation, analysis and proposal to the residents of velachery.

Redesigning blocks The idea of amalgamating deteriorated or under planned plots in Velachery will facilitate planned and systematic upgrading of a large “inclusive urban area, involving planning, designing, rebuilding, re- structuring, or restoring, thereby freeing land, for redeveloping areas, by creating more infrastructure, amenities, facilities, and open spaces, without compromising the standards and quality of living of its residents. It frequently refers to programs of major demolition and rebuilding of blighted areas. The Urban Renewal will encompass sectorial development on a large basis which may include numerous cluster developments.

Academic project Induvidual 2015

The design objective is to create a home for elderly persons. The given site was abutting a lake. Critical aspects and design parameters were the walking distance and proximity to the basic amenities inside the campus. The legibility and clear demarcation of functional spaces form the basis of design inception. I attempted to give the sense of their outside world by introducing programmatic strategies and the resulting tangibles were its outcomes. The late edge and the lowest point is made into fish/ prawn Culture to provide employment to the surrounding and also becomes a leisure activity for the inmates. The courtyards within the room areas were either treated as kitchen farms in some instances and others were kept empty to allow children from nearby high-rise apartments to come and play.

Academic project Individual 2013

Library design introduced as studio project during my 2nd year of undergraduate architecture. Site located in a University complex surrounded by thick green cover around. During the site visit, I observed the sanity of the place with greenery and imagined a scene students reading books on the outdoor environment. The design includes a large central courtyard and a wide plaza opening out to the landscape on ground level. The Volumes are organized in such a way that it forms terraces for extending the reading outdoor. To bring the same sense of reading in nature to the interiors, devised an element on the roof plane which brings in natural lighting and also acts as seater for the terrace above.

An idea sparked after understanding the lost relationship between infrastructure and the settlements. In the current pace of transformation, the definition of a public space is constantly evolving. WHY OUT, WHY NOT IN?

The “patches are platform inside the canal inspired from natural land patches in water stream forms with varying height, lifted up with slender columns in random fashion. It provides space for multiple activities. The patches are designed in such a way it creates least obstruction to the water flow.

Patches with different heights

Patches Detail

There is a possibility for extending the physical experience level to its extreme, where the usual way of leisure is watching the water body from afar, this is realized by enhancing the canal activities during the dry months when there are no storm water feeds.

Summer/ less water flow condition

Optimal water flow condition

Flood/ Downpour flow condition

Seasonal Calender

The proposal also includes a seasonal schedule for the canal. A Dry, partial flow and high flow during the monsoon season. This included the revival of the Adyar lock with introduction of sediment water treatment facilities, bird and lock watching facility and office. Places where the canal width is drastically reduced happens to be exactly where the major streamlines intersect, hence these sections are widened for a better flow.

THE NEED!!!

A body that monitors the “health” of water bodies is required within urban limits. The body is composed by the government, Citizens and City deed professionals “CITY WATER CARE”. The proposal through the sequence after cleaning and introducing “patches” in the canal will further grows outside the canal creating impacts on the immediate context, the CITY WATER CARE will provide opportunities through community farming, eateries and other recreational programs through “patches” and maintaining them. This will create employment opportunities for the youth and brings back the lost connections with the Buckingham canal.

The 2015 Edition of ‘DWELL’ (Design for Informality) departs from the 2014 edition which addressed the idea of ‘Desity’ and proposes to look at the city from the perspective of the ‘Un-Designed’ – the eclectic urban reality of India which includes a powerful parallel system that operates beyond the predictable. Urur Olcott Kuppam is a old fishing village in Chennai. It is secluded from other part of the city completely and perceived as inform settlement. We on this workshop used architecture as a empowering tool to that society.
