Making Every Gift Count for Every Student St. Andrew’s Episcopal School Annual Impact Report 2016-17
2016-17 Annual Impact Report
From the Head of School Dear St. Andrew’s Families and Friends, You are a promise and a possibility. I said those words, originally sung by the Bill Gaither Trio in 1975, to our faculty at our opening chapel and then later shared them with our students. Now I say them to you. Your gifts, your time, your talent, and your commitment to St. Andrew’s make so many things possible for our students, teachers, and school. If you haven’t heard the lyrics to this classic song, I encourage you to listen. While intended for the minds and hearts of young children I believe they resonate with all of us: You can go anywhere that he wants you to go, You can be anything that he wants you to be, You can climb the high mountain, You can cross the wide sea, you’re a great big promise, You see. Our commitment, as educators and faithful servants of God, is to love, embrace, encourage, and challenge our students so that they can build lives of genuine meaning, purpose and service. Without your philanthropy we would not be able to realize the promise of our mission and all the possibilities of our students. We are deeply grateful to the families and friends listed here who have made so much possible for our school. Thank you so much. Sincerely,
Sean Murphy St. Andrew’s Head of School

ADMINISTRATION & BOARD Sean Murphy, Head of School Todd Stephenson, Head of Upper School Alice Nezzer, Head of Middle School Kama Bruce, Head of Lower School Randy Erben, Chair, Board of Trustees MISSION STATEMENT The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to provide an enriched academic program within a Christian environment emphasizing the fulfillment of each student’s potential. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The school strives to help young people achieve their potential not only in intellectual understanding but also in esthetic sensitivity, physical well-being, athletic prowess, and moral decisiveness so that they may lead productive, responsible lives, not only for themselves, but also for their community. DIVERSITY STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Diversity at St. Andrew’s is grounded in our identity as a familybased community, a faith- based community, and a learning community. We understand that our strength and resilience as a three-fold community stems from our commitment to: • Honor each individual’s unique perspective; • Respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God, and; • Develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to engage with and respond to the needs of an evolving world. CORE VALUES Community Based on trust, traditions, communication, appreciation, and support Spiritual Foundation To develop moral behavior High Expectations Reflected in both the knowledge base and behavior of the faculty, staff, students, parents, and board members Caring, Celebration and Humor Fostered by kindness and collegiality STATEMENT OF NON-DISCRIMINATION St. Andrew’s Episcopal School admits qualified students regardless of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, religion, physical disability, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, religion, physical disability, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation in the administration of any policies or programs generally accorded or made available to students at the school.

From the Senior Class President In the Class of 2017, a quarter of our class are “lifers”, meaning they’ve been here since the beginning. Although I am not a lifer myself, I sometimes get the title of “honorary lifer” for being here since the third grade, just two years after the real “lifers”. I often get included in the category of people from whom new students should ask for advice. So, what makes this school special? When I came to St. Andrew’s, there was a special atmosphere of inclusion: a family. I know that is one of the things that the school says about itself, but it is true. St. Andrew’s knits together the three divisions of the school, now also with kindergarten. From the top of the school, I can look down the chain with perspective and with genuine gratitude for all those who helped me along my way. This year, I saw the lifers’ time here come full circle on St. Andrew’s Day when they walked into the gym with a first grade “friend”. Even some of the tough guys were fondly remembering their senior “friend” 12 years ago as they held the hand of a new young student. From the beginning, the school talks about about its four pillars: Scholar, Artist, Athlete, Servant. However, the school encourages growth in all areas. Of course, some students are more successful at some than others, but our school always encourages resiliency and persistence. Each year, all of the seniors pour their efforts into a project of any kind that they are passionate about, and the school is there, encouraging perseverance through both the failures and successes. Last spring, I saw the four pillars working their way into our Senior Projects with students learning a new language, creating a photography exhibition, and holding a clothing drive, just to name a few. Perhaps the best reason why people love this school is, honestly, the ability to pursue what each individual is passionate about. We don’t all see eye to eye on the value of every activity, as we are all passionate about our own, but there is real respect and enthusiasm for the talents of others. To watch one of our plays, to hear the Select Choir sing, to watch any of our sports teams compete, or to witness the commitment of our Latin certamen team is to see the beauty of our different interests at our school. With success or failure, St. Andrew’s is the best training ground for any and all interests which will take us into adulthood, equipped to try new things, unafraid of what our peers may say, and always looking for the next opportunity to learn something. Olivia Smith, ‘17 Senior Class President

From the Board Chair As the father of two St. Andrew’s “lifers” (one of whom was a graduating senior in 2017) and the chair of the Board of Trustees, I obviously am invested in St. Andrew’s. Why is that? Our family was attracted to St. Andrew’s twelve years ago by the strong academics and the daily chapel, and everything we have experienced since then has confirmed that we made the right decision to entrust St. Andrew’s with the education and care of our daughters. Its devotion to the four pillars—academics, athletics, arts, and service—and to its Episcopal Identity ensures that each child will find his or her own way and will flourish as a well-rounded, caring person. But St. Andrew’s is so much more than a school. It truly is a community. Whenever any member of that community, whether it be a student, parent, faculty member, administrator, or staff member, has a need, we all address it together; success, we all celebrate together; a loss, we all grieve together. So many people give very generously of their time, talents, and treasure to St. Andrew’s. Why do so many give? I believe that many do so out of gratitude to what the school has meant to their families. More importantly, I believe that people give to St. Andrew’s so that its curriculum and programs can maintain their excellence for their children, and the children that will follow them. Further, the money given to St. Andrew’s is used wisely and for very worthy purposes. I would like to mention three of these purposes. Annual Fund. The Board of Trustees is charged with writing the school’s annual budget, and strives to be excellent stewards of your tuition dollars. As careful as the Board is with these funds, tuition only covers 94% of the cost of attending St. Andrew’s (this is above average for independent schools). The Annual Fund is used to “fill the gap” between tuition and the cost of providing the excellence in academic and other programs we have come to enjoy at St. Andrew’s. Financial Aid. The Board of Trustees adopted a Strategic Plan in 2013 which set a goal of increasing financial aid to meet diversity initiatives in the student body. This commitment is manifested in a budget which dedicates 11% of all funds to financial aid. This line item is funded by the annual Spring Fundraiser for Financial Aid and other efforts, which allow families with demonstrated need to enjoy the gifts St. Andrew’s offers their children. Capital Campaigns. On a periodic basis, St. Andrew’s will endeavor to build new facilities to enhance its programs, and finance them through capital fundraising campaigns. The last two campaigns resulted in the state-of-the-art Dell Fine Arts Center, making St. Andrew’s a magnet for excellence in the arts, and the new kindergarten building, Eleanor Hall, which designates St. Andrew’s as the only K-12 Episcopal school in Central Texas and only one of 19 in the U.S. I hope you will agree with me that your financial gifts are used prudently, and result in the excellence that epitomizes St. Andrew’s. Thank you for your ongoing support of St. Andrew’s. Sincerely, Randy Erben, Chair, Board of Trustees Parent to Christian ‘17 and Emma ‘19

2016-17 Annual Impact Report
A First-Year Family Looks Back In 2016, we made the decision to relocate to Austin from Lake Forest, Illinois. More important to us than finding the perfect home, our highest priority was to find the right school for our youngest son, Sam. He was thriving at a small private school in Lake Forest that was both academically challenging and highly focused on character development. We did not want to compromise his needs in our desire to move to Austin. Our intent was to purchase a home near the school we deemed the best fit for Sam, hence we were able to consider all the private schools in Austin.
After our first visit to SAS, we all felt that we had found the best school for our son and family. The four pillars
“We absolutely love the caring, supportive environment created by the faculty. We love the SAS community, filled with parents that are genuine, loving and grounded.” philosophy, the small classes, the focus on character formation, and the kindness of the people were the top factors in our decision. To date, SAS has exceeded our expectations. We absolutely love the
caring, supportive environment created by the faculty. We love the SAS community, filled with parents that are genuine, loving and grounded. Also, the academics at SAS have been rigorous with a curriculum that truly encompasses the whole child. We look forward to seventh grade and beyond and count our blessings that our son can attend such an exceptional school. Don and Pamela Suter Parents to Sam, ‘23

Why I Give Back to St. Andrew’s Since I can remember, St. Andrew’s has been my home. Every corner of its campuses bears a memory for me. I recall summer afternoons spent running up and down the halls of the Middle School while my dad (then the head of the Middle School) diligently prepared for the upcoming school year. I remember singing in the chorus during the First Grade Christmas Pageant. I travel back to my first (and immensely awkward) Middle School dance in Crusader Hall. I think of my first day sitting in Marsha Russell’s art history class in 10th grade when I was completely floored by her passion for the material she was teaching. Through every one of these memories and phases of my development, St. Andrew’s has supported my growth and learning. It coached me in first grade when I read my first simple chapter book. It guided me through my
self-conscious Middle School days. It applauded me when I performed in my first musical production. It cheered for me when I scored my first goal as a varsity lacrosse player. It celebrated with me when I was accepted to my first college. I had no idea that I would be drawn back to its halls as an adult, yearning to help other students the way my teachers had helped me.
“This is the gift of St. Andrew’s: wherever life takes you, regardless of how long you’ve been away, you have a community that knows you, cares for you, and has faith in you.” But life has a funny way of coming fullcircle, especially at St. Andrew’s. Many of those who have been impacted by its community of learning and fellowship can’t help but to return in
order to share and build upon what makes St. Andrew’s so special. That is why I work at St. Andrew’s and why I give to St. Andrew’s. This school has buoyed me throughout my life’s journey. I always knew that no matter what mistakes I made, I had a group of people who believed in me. This is the gift of St. Andrew’s: wherever life takes you, regardless of how long you’ve been away, you have a community that knows you, cares for you, and has faith in you. One that will always support your evolution into a kinder, more aware, and more informed human. What more could a child—or teacher—ask for? Sarah McGhee Marks, ‘07 7th Grade Faculty

Play On With the New Lower School Playscape St. Andrew’s rang in the new year with a beautiful new state-of-the art playscape on our 31st Street campus. At the January dedication, student banners with “blessings for our playground” adorned the trees and our students and faculty celebrated the generosity of our families who provided funds for this magnificent space. Many thanks to our wonderful families who lovingly donated to this project, which created a very happy place for our students to play. Thank you to these generous families who made the new playscape possible! Adria and Brian Sheth Anonymous Carol and Jon Gormin Leslie and Andrew Morgan

“During so much change in my life, St. Andrews always remained my constant. Whether I knew it at the time or not, St. Andrew’s became my comfort, my escape, and forever my family.... because of Financial Aid, a nine year old who had just lost her father did not have to lose her friends, teachers, and school as well. And for that I stand here tonight as a senior and St. Andrew’s lifer to say “Thank You”. Thank you to every one of you.” Nina Molanphy ‘17 When St. Andrew’s senior Nina Molanphy walked up to the podium under the big tents and lights on the night of April 8, the live auction had just concluded, and the clinks of dishes, happy conversations, and laughter floated up to greet her. By the end of her heartfelt story, the entire crowd— nearly 600 guests—was silent. Riveted on Nina’s voice, guests listened as she spoke about her experience of losing her dad in a car accident when she was only nine years old. She spoke of how St. Andrew’s teachers, other parents, and students rallied around her entire family to help them through an impossible time. She emphasized how financial aid from the school made it possible for her and her brother to continue attending St. Andrew’s, providing a
much-needed sense of stability and community in the upheaval of their lives. With Nina’s poignant story in mind, guests participated in “paddles up” with a strong sense of purpose and investment. In addition to generous sponsorships and donations, during paddles up, the community offered up $181,000 to support other financial aid students and let them discover and tell their stories at St. Andrew’s. In addition to the record-breaking paddles up gifts, every dollar was generously matched by the Sheth family. All of the event’s success would not have been possible without the three wonderful event Co-Chairs, Jennifer Marsh, Jennifer Nield, and Jennifer Roossien. Heading a committee of more than 80 St. Andrew’s parents and
friends, the “Jennifers” put on an event to remember. The decor was cheerful and warm, with a large offering of silent auction items and fun activities like a “wine pull” as well as a fun Kendra Scott jewelry mystery box station. Just prior to paddles up, the live auction was a big success with items like a California pampering trip, a silver labrador puppy, and a Diana Greenberg custom painting. Overall, the event brought in $750,000 to support financial aid and the 20% of SAS students it supports. This total shatters previous records, and will give more than 150 students the opportunity to be a part of this engaging and supportive community, creating and telling their personal stories and purposes.

Endowments to St. Andrew’s School
Donations to the St. Andrew’s School endowment represent significant acts of philanthropy because our endowed fund provides support to St. Andrew’s in perpetuity, year after year. Endowment gifts are invested rather than spent outright, and each year a distribution is made to SAS. Investment earnings above the distribution help the endowment value grow over time, to keep pace with inflation and maintain the endowment’s spending power. The Bailey Society: Creating a Legacy The Bailey Society was established in 2002 to recognize the generosity and foresight of those who join the school’s founders in securing the future of St. Andrew’s. The hallmark of this special group is the commitment of each of these supporters to a strong, financially sound independent school that will prepare our students as scholars, athletes, servants and artists for generations to come. Members of the Bailey Society have established a deferred gift that will benefit St. Andrew’s and its students and faculty in the future. The Bailey Society is named in honor of Bishop Field Scott Bailey (1916–2005), a founder of St. Andrew’s and a pillar of the Episcopal Church community. Membership in the Bailey Society is extended to an individual who: 1. Includes St. Andrew’s Episcopal School as a beneficiary of his or her will; 2. Names St. Andrew’s as the beneficiary of a life income gift such as a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust or a charitable lead trust; or 3. Names St. Andrew’s as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. If you’d like to learn more about the Bailey Society and creating your legacy on the St. Andrew’s campuses, please contact Catherine Herter, Director of Development and Communications at (512) 299-9809 or cherter@sasaustin.org.
