St. Andrew’s Episcopal School

From the Head

Dear St. Andrew’s Families and Friends,

We are so grateful for you. Your gifts to St. Andrew’s make a measurable difference to our students and teachers and allow us to provide the very best opportunities for academic, athletic, artistic, and spiritual success. Thank you for faithfully supporting our work. The 2017-2018 school year was filled with exciting growth and change for St. Andrew’s. The Board of Trustees completed a five-year strategic plan which includes six main initiatives: Ensuring Programmatic Excellence, Enhancing Facilities, Strengthening Financial Sustainability, Investing in the Athletics Pillar, Increasing Diversity and Inclusion, and Elevating the Way We Communicate. All six are exciting opportunities for us at St. Andrew’s, and I look forward to sharing more about each of these initiatives throughout the year. Your gifts helped transform classrooms, play spaces, our athletics and musical programs, our scholarship opportunities for students in need, and more. In the pages of this Impact Report you will find thousands of names that represent a collective effort to make St. Andrew’s an exceptional place for our kids. Thank you for being a part of our current and future success. With gratitude, Sean

Sean Murphy Head of School

2017-18 Board of Trustees St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees is entrusted with the great responsibility of operating the non-profit entity of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, an independent Episcopal school. Members of the Board serve staggered three-year terms and two-thirds of our members must be Episcopalian. The bylaws state that students here are to be instructed in the Christian religion according to the teachings of the Episcopal Church and that St. Andrew’s operate an accredited program.

ADMINISTRATION & BOARD Sean Murphy, Head of School Todd Stephenson, Head of Upper School Alice Nezzer, Head of Middle School Kama Bruce, Head of Lower School Randy Erben, Chair, Board of Trustees MISSION STATEMENT The mission of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is to provide an enriched academic program within a Christian environment emphasizing the fulfillment of each student’s potential. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The school strives to help young people achieve their potential not only in intellectual understanding but also in esthetic sensitivity, physical well-being, athletic prowess, and moral decisiveness so that they may lead productive, responsible lives, not only for themselves, but also for their community. DIVERSITY STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Diversity at St. Andrew’s is grounded in our identity as a family-based community, a faith- based community, and a learning community. We understand that our strength and resilience as a threefold community stems from our commitment to: • Honor each individual’s unique perspective; • Respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God, and; • Develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to engage with and respond to the needs of an evolving world. CORE VALUES Community Based on trust, traditions, communication, appreciation, and support Spiritual Foundation To develop moral behavior High Expectations Reflected in both the knowledge base and behavior of the faculty, staff, students, parents, and board members Caring, Celebration and Humor Fostered by kindness and collegiality STATEMENT OF NON-DISCRIMINATION St. Andrew’s Episcopal School admits qualified students regardless of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, religion, physical disability, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation. 2017-18 Annual Impact Report

From the Board This past year we saw kindergarteners construct their own cities, Lower, Middle and Upper Schoolers medal in competitions like PSIA, Science Olympiad, and the National Latin Exam, and one senior—Carson Witt ’18—accept an appointment to the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy, which has a seven percent acceptance rate. Our fall musical won three awards including Best Actor, and our Class of 2018 graduated five athletes heading to NCAA-level competition. We saw countless students embody and meet the high expectations we have of them – and even more importantly, that they have for themselves. Our students consistently demonstrate excellence and achievement by so many measures, and we celebrate those successes enthusiastically. As

an alumna, a parent, and a member of the Board, I am proud to call St. Andrew’s my family’s community in large part because of this excellence. There is a second side to a St. Andrew’s education, however, that sometimes gets lost among the more measureable achievements: the social and emotional learning, the emphasis on service, and the community that is built and strengthened each day – among our students, faculty and staff, parents and loved ones. My boys literally bounce out of the car every morning with such joy and enthusiasm at the prospect of what their days hold for them, buoyed by the friendships they’ve made and the confidence they’ve earned based on generous support of their teachers. I am in awe of their self-awareness, the confidence in who they are and their growing ability to manage their emotions and communicate confidently and

respectfully with their peers and teachers—and me. It’s so heartening to know that where we send them for more than a third of their waking hours is a place where their whole self—mind, body, and spirit—is thoughtfully and purposefully supported and engaged; that the influence from their teachers and their friends is a positive one; that they are growing and developing in a community that sees them as a unique and valuable individual, but also one where they realize their many blessings and their ability to affect change to make their world a better place. As a community, we create this special environment for our children. To the parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, students, alumni parents and friends who support us—what you give us is nothing short of amazing, and I am

From the Alumni Board

Dear Fellow Supporters of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, As the President of the St. Andrew’s Alumni Board and a member of the Class of 2009, I thank you for your support for St. Andrew’s. Your gifts help create an unparalleled learning environment and ensure

that our school continues to provide the highest quality educational experiences for hundreds of children under the supervision and guidance of passionate faculty and administrators.

type of environment is made possible by your generous gifts, which allow St. Andrew’s to create well-rounded and passionate students who are ready to face the world’s challenges and thrive.

While the experience of every child at St. Andrew’s is different, the one constant that makes this school so special is the support each child receives, from the day they first walk in the door until the day they receive their diploma. Beyond the small class sizes, each student is encouraged to pursue their interests with passion and try new things as they grow and learn. Only at St. Andrew’s does a student have the freedom to explore robotics in a state-of-the-art lab while also performing in a play or musical, or sing in the Select Choir while also being a multi-sport varsity athlete. This

St. Andrew’s has been one of the most important influences in mine and my family’s life. While the great education I received prepared me for college and graduate school, it is the experiences and the relationships made in the St. Andrew’s community that have continued to influence my professional and personal life in the years beyond the classroom. From friends I have had since the first grade, to teachers who are still mentors, to unique experiences that pushed me to grow, it all comes back to St. Andrew’s. This connection is why I have stayed involved with St. Andrew’s and

so grateful for you. Thank you for whatever time, talent, or treasure you contribute to SAS. You are the reason our community is stronger than ever!

continue to lend my support. The experiences of our students are truly unique. They are not only prepared for what immediately lies ahead, but their St. Andrew’s experience will stay with them and continue to define them for years to come. This is only possible because of your generous support. Thank you again for your continued support of St. Andrew’s. Sincerely,

Jase Burner ‘09 President, St. Andrew’s Alumni Board

2017-18 Annual Impact Report

A Family Gives Back The Boatwright family gives generously at leadership levels each year to the St. Andrew’s Fund as well as the St. Andrew’s Financial Aid Program. St. Andrew’s school has such a warm and welcoming vibe; it’s really hard to explain until you step foot on the campus. It is illuminated in the care of the teachers, the motivated staff, and the cheerful students. What we really love about St. Andrew’s is the celebration of all aspects of

diversity.

There are so many ways to experience different cultures through festivities and activities within the curriculum, which makes learning fun. St. Andrew’s also offers wonderful opportunities for parents to learn and grow throughout the year, which brings even more cohesion within the community.

commitment to sharing this wonderful community and true joy in knowing that another student will have this opportunity. When everyone pitches in to make another child’s hope of a St. Andrew’s education come true, everybody wins.

Yvette and Jonathan Boatwright

We do a wonderful job as a St. Andrew’s community to support those in need. As a family, we are very proud to support the financial aid program and with each gift, we feel a sense of

Giving Back: An Alumna’s Perspective St. Andrew’s has always been a welcoming and supportive community committed to its students, both socially and academically. That is what originally drew me to St. Andrew’s as a new high school freshman, and what brought me back to work here postcollege graduation. Even when I was a new student on

financial aid, I always felt like I had a place at St. Andrew’s. The school supported all of my academic endeavors and extracurricular interests, no matter how big or small. Not only did I receive an excellent education that prepared me for college and beyond, but I also got to see and experience the world through many of the school-sponsored trips. Traveling

In art I was able to work side by side with talented and supportive artist mentors, and during my time in Student Senate I was able to organize my community service efforts. The Bailey Society The Bailey Society was established in 2002 to recognize the generosity and foresight of those who join the school’s founders in securing the future of St. Andrew’s. Members of the Bailey Society have established a deferred gift that will benefit St. Andrew’s and its students and faculty in the future.

The Bailey Society is named in honor of Bishop Field Scott Bailey (1916– 2005), a founder of St. Andrew’s and a pillar of the Episcopal Church community. Membership in the Bailey Society is extended to an individual who includes St. Andrew’s Episcopal School as a beneficiary of his or her will, who names St. Andrew’s as the beneficiary of a life income gift such as a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust or a charitable lead trust, or who names St. Andrew’s as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan.

Holy Spirit, Lord of love, come to our school today. Work with us and play with us and hear us when we pray. Show us how to follow Christ, in all we think and say and do. For he was once a child like us, and all our cares and joys he knew. Amen. Contact Us sasaustin.org
